Among the special events advertised in the lead-up to OTFCC 2004 was "Who Shot Optimus Prime?", meant to have been a live-action interactive murder mystery with a Transformers theme. Promotional materials (see right) featured Nightbeat.

However, upon arrival at the venue (Monastero's, an Italian restaurant and catering hall) it turned out the event would be "DEATH BY CHOCOLATE," a "normal" live-action murder mystery, with generic human characters and no Transformers-related content at all.

Malin Huffman entered first to greet and prep guests—but he was suddenly distracted by gunshots and fled the room in terror. Immediately, in rushed the well-known Detective Harry Bottoms, who announced that famed chocolate magnate O. Henry Butterfinger, CEO of King Coco, had been murdered, that the catering hall was now a crime scene, and that all attendees would be his deputies and help solve the case. Bottoms split attendees into teams, produced evidence, witnesses, and suspects, and gave the teams opportunities to come to their own conclusions and share them with the rest of the audience.

In the end, the murderer was found to be the notorious vixen-like sociopath Darque Chocolate. She vanished at the end of the event and her current whereabouts are unknown, though likely the mountainous "tribal" regions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

True to Detective Bottoms' word, the "reward" for solving the mystery was "worth well under $1000" (as he reminded participants throughout the evening) and turned out to be nothing more than a cheaply-printed certificate. Apparently, crime does pay more than detective work.

Despite the night's shocking events, attendees tried to make the best of it and get on with normal life afterwards.

"A dear family friend had been invited to visit, a popular mystery writer from Bennett Cove, Vermont. She was not only here to visit, she was here to help O. Henry with a problem...and now, she and you can help solve the mystery of who O. Henry Buttterfinder in the mystery we'll call...DEATH BY CHOCOLATE"

Notes
*Each table/team was asked to create a name for their agency. Among some of the more colorful names chosen were the "I Thought Optimus Was the Victim" Detective Agency, the "James X. Hooks Memorial" Detective Agency, the "Cold Pizza Inc." Detective Agency and the always-popular "I Did Your Mom" Detective Agency. Hey, we had to have some fun that evening.
*Participants received posters of Optimus Prime and Megatron autographed by their voice actors.
*According to Glen Hallit, the mystery was not Transformers-themed because the hosting entertainment company - Celebration Services, Inc - refused to change their format or script without "substantial remuneration" (ie: Big Bucks).
*At one point, 3H considered the idea of producing a few minutes of original animation with the proper voice-actors, but this too would have cost far, far more than their resources would allow.
*For the record, in the original Transformers-themed mystery, Ratchet would have been revealed to be the culprit after being infected with one of Bombshell's cerebro-shells.

:Holomatter is a technology from the IDW continuity portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Holomatter is a solid-light projection technology, used by Autobots operating on alien worlds. Holomatter projectors can create projected facsimiles of native species which are too small or fleshy for the Autobots to mimic with their mechanical altmodes.

All the Autobots operating covertly on Earth use holomatter avatars to act as their vehicle-mode drivers. The avatar can operate both outside the Autobot and within. The avatar isn't just a friendly image to fool human beings; it's also the Autobot equivalent of a remotely operated vehicle, allowing Autobots to go places and perform actions that would otherwise be prevented by their size and the need to camouflage their true identities. Having an avatar in a location is like the Autobot being there himself. An avatar can function a considerable distance away from the controlling Autobot, even when separated by solid walls. Infiltration issue 1

The avatar is created and maintained by "holomatter generators". They can cause the avatar to blink into sudden existence with no warning. Holomatter avatars can be intangible, or as solid as a real object. Although the upper limit of the strength of a holomatter avatar has not been established, Ironhide's avatar was capable of lifting Verity Carlo and Jimmy Pink at the same time, and he could increase the size of his avatar to over 9' (3m) tall so as to manhandle the pair through a hole in the ceiling. Escalation issue 6

In emergencies, a holomatter avatar can be used to deliver a massive electrical surge at very close range. This surge is powerful enough to momentarily disrupt the systems of a single Transformer, enough to cause disorientation and possibly unconsciousness. The cost of this surge is that it burns out the holomatter generators. Infiltration issue 2

Holomatter disguises are limited by their operator's understanding of the lifeform they mimic. During their early time on Earth, the holomatter avatars of the Autobots wore a "creepy-fixed-smile"; Infiltration issue 3 although Ratchet's avatar's upper face expressed worry, fear and resignation (and its eyes closed) during the Autobots' initial interactions with Hunter, Jimmy and Verity, its smile never disappeared. This lack of understanding may account for why otherwise "male" Autobots (for example, Bumblebee and Sunstreaker) have female avatars. It is not known if the Autobots can alter their voices to suit the gender of their avatar. After Optimus Prime arrived on Earth, Hunter gave the Autobots a "crash course in Earth culture"; Jazz noted that the Autobots never realized that humans found the smiles of their avatars disturbing. After this, the Autobots' holomatter avatars became much more expressive.

Much like Pretender shells before them, holomatter avatars carry a strong connection to the consciousness of its generating Autobot. Damage to the avatar can cause severe impairment to the controlling Autobot if their consciousness is not withdrawn in time. Spotlight: Ultra Magnus

Holomatter can be detected by devices called "holomatter readers", which the Machination appears to possess. Escalation issue 4
