If you were to ask '''Megatron''' to describe himself in one word, he'd probably go with "heroic". He sees himself as a freedom fighter, leading the Decepticons out of the days of [[Autobot]] tyranny. The fact he's hoping to replace that with Decepticon tyranny isn't really a concern. A fanatic at heart, he revels in every Autobot who suffers at Decepticon hands and doesn't register humans as anything more then "collateral Damage."

Megatron demands loyalty from the Decepticons, loyalty he gains by his awe-inspiring power. With the combined threat of a sharp mind, his [[fusion cannon]], a deadly sword and simple brute strength, there aren't many who'd dare cross him. Still, he has no problem manhandling troops as a gentle reminder.

The '''Dinoforce''' has the combined brainpower......of a melon. A very, very stupid melon. They are looked down upon by the other Decepticons, most-notably the [[Breastforce]], because they're just so darn stupid. Despite being dinosaurs, they are not very strong and resort to combining into [[Dinoking]] in a tight spot. The [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]] they ain't.

Rather uniquely, the Dinoforce's pretender shells appear to have some level of independent thought; when the Dinoforce aren't merged with them they can think and act on their own, though usually simply doing whatever they were told to do by their robot masters. In fact, team leader [[Goryu]] rides around on on the back of his shell rather than within it. Another odd thing is that the Dinoforce rarely — possibly never — seem to convert into their "monster" alternate modes when outside of their shells.

The Dinoforce was frequently used by [[Deathsaurus]], likely because he didn't have any other troops other than the Breast Force at his disposal, and thus if he got rid of them before the series started, then he wouldn't have had any troops ''at all''. The bumbling idiots miserably failed every mission they were given, and about their only purpose to the plot other then comic relief is that an attack by them killed [[Jean Minakaze]]'s parents. Presumably they laughed themselves to death, either at the sight of the Dinofarce in action, or else at Star Saber's melodramatic dialogue. Eventually, when Deathsaurus raided the energy from [[Atlantis]], he abandoned the Dinoforce to die, despite their blind loyalty to him. Out of resentment for being betrayed, they supplied the information that Deathsaurus's giant fortress had a weak-point. When last seen, the Dinoforce appeared to have turned good. Or they may simply have been confused. As their possible ancestors [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] and [[Sludge|Sludge]] once discussed: "Which ones friends?" "The ones with face like this, I thinks."

==Generation 1==

The original, classic [[Generation 1 (cartoon)|Generation 1]] theme tune by [[Anne Bryant]] and [[Ford Kinder]], with its simple, iconic repetition of the brand's rhyming slogans, "More than meets the eye," and "robots in disguise," has formed the basis of most Western Transformers theme tunes. Used as both the opening theme of the animated series and in the multitude of toy commercials over the years, it's pretty much burned into the mind of every twenty-something on the planet, and maybe their parents as well. You say to someone, "Transformers?" and it's not unlikely that you'll have them jingle back ''"Ro-bots in dis-guise!"''

Seasons 1, 2 and 3 of the series feature their own distinct renditions of the theme tune, with season 3's version being especially distinguished by the unusual "Ah-aah!" chant that runs throughout it. For ''[[The Transformers: The Movie]]'', composer [[Vince DiCola]] created several new versions of the tune (featuring instrumental pieces included in other parts of the movie's score), sung by [[Ed Fruge]] and [[Gary Falcone]], although ultimately, the finished movie used a power metal arrangment by [[Lion]] with additional verses in between the familiar chorus.

Various iterations of the theme were incorporated into many pieces of the show's stock background music, which was composed by [[Robert J. Walsh]].

==Beast Era==

As the first new Transformers cartoons since Generation 1, ''[[Beast Wars (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]'' and ''[[Beast Machines (cartoon)|Beast Machines]]'' featured new theme tunes that owed nothing to original; in years to come, this would make them the distinct exceptions amongst their animated brethren. ''Beast Wars'' features an instrumental theme tune with occasional roaring shouts of "Beast Wars!" (unless you live in Canada, in which case they were shouting "Beasties!"). The theme was composed by [[Robert Buckley]], who composed and performed all of the show's background music as well. The motifs of the ''Beast Wars'' theme show up in many scenes during the show itself.

''Beast Machines'' stands out even further, having licensed the pre-existing song, [[Leftfield]]'s "[[Phat Planet]]," to serve as its theme, though Buckley continued to supply background music for the show itself. Another song about Beast Machines, "Evolution Revolution," was produced by FoxKids for use in preview materials but was not heard in the series itself.

==21st century==

The fandom just about wet itself when ''[[Robots in Disguise (cartoon)|Robots in Disguise]]'' became the first cartoon since Generation 1 to employ a variation of the classic theme tune, although there were a few surprises along the way. First, an mp3 of what appeared to be the new theme tune was released online, but when the series actually debuted, everyone was a bit surprised to discover that its theme was an entirely ''different'' variation of the G1 theme, most notable for adding the new line, "Change before your eyes," in place of "more than meets the eye." The mp3 turned out to be the new commercial jingle, which featured in commercials for all subsequent lines.

''[[Armada (cartoon)|Armada]]'' followed this trend, featuring a trance version of the classic theme, sans lyrics (with a narrator lecturing the audience on the premise of the show instead). A second arrangement, however, was included as an "insert song" during episodes, and featured the traditional "more than meets the eye" and "robots in disguise" lines. The [[Transformers (Melbourne House)|Armada video game]], meanwhile, included a stirring orchestral version of the theme, which... well, totally kicked ass, frankly.

The ''[[Energon (cartoon)|Energon]]'''s theme was an unremarkable affair, featuring another new version of the classic theme (with lyrics) that did not stand out in any great manner. This was the cue for ''[[Cybertron (cartoon)|Cybertron]]'' to really shake things up, offering a unique version of the tune by [[Paul Oakenfold]], with energetic shouts of the brand and faction names. Perhaps most significantly, it featured the return of the long-lost line, "Autobots wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons"{{m-}}albeit simply spoken by Oakenfold during the middle-eight, rather than sung.

As part of the [[Sector Seven (game)|viral marketing]] for the [[Transformers (2007)|live-action movie]], an mp3 of Linkin Park soundalikes "[[DECEPTIBOT]]" performing a song that included the classic theme as a chorus was released online. This song didn't feature in the movie or on the soundtrack, though. Instead, [[Mutemath]] performed a whiny, emo version of the tune for the soundtrack, although it didn't appear in the film itself.

[[Animated]] stands poised to continue this tradition, with yet another new variation of the theme, including an entirely new rhyming couplet, "More than they appear/not just bolts and gears!"

There is a different one for each series. Each one is unique, bearing little resemblance to each other.

One of them is totally about how Star Saber wet the bed as a kid. Seriously. Another one ("Honoo No Overdrive" performed by [[Kōji Wada]]) has the lyrics "Go, Boy Convoy!" It's kind of dubious.<br>

While outlining the [[Beast Wars (cartoon)|Beast Wars cartoon]], [[Bob Forward]] and [[Larry DiTillio]] created the made-up curse "By the Inferno" so the bad guys could swear. This was changed to "By the Pit" to avoid confusion when a Predacon named [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]] was added to the cast. Having made the [[Allspark|Matrix dimension]] an analogue to Heaven, they made the Inferno/Pitt their Hell.

The BW series [[bible]] included two facilities that created protoforms, the Matrix and the Pit{{fact}} (names reflecting the heaven/hell dynamic.) These were never mentioned in the series <small>(possibly it was a stand-in concept in case they ever 'needed to answer' to where protoforms came from.)</small> However, 10 years later (2007) the protoform facilities were made [[canon]] by a club-exclusive story... despite the canon now having several other sources of protoforms.

The 2004 [[Universe (comic)|Universe]] introduced the Pit within Unicron. It also introduced the idea that there is only one Unicron across all continuities, so the Pit myth would ''retroactively'' be about this version of the Pit (probably,) which even includes its own fiery inferno! A connection to/inspiration by the early version Galvatron's reformatting has never been confirmed, and is pure speculation.

Arrogant and cocky with the skills to back up all his big talk, '''Jetstorm''' leads [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron's]] [[Sonic Attack Jet|aero-drones]] in his bid to removes the last vestiges of resistance on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. He is distinguished from the other drones as having a more purpley colour scheme and yellow markings on his body. The only thing Jetstorm likes more than cracking wise is cracking heads. He takes great pleasure in tormenting the [[Maximal]]s and lets them know at every opportunity how much better than them he is. He has a nasty temper that is barely hidden behind a thin veneer of cool indifference, and it really doesn't take much to set him off. Like that [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] chick, what's she staring at?

Despite his smarm, bravado and temper, Jetstorm knows when to cut his losses and run for it. He may have a whole load of personality flaws (and a load of aero-drones to back him up), but he's not stupid. Despite early rivalries, he has also developed a comaraderie with [[Thrust (BM)|Thrust]], even though the idea of being friends with anyone initially came as something of a shock.

Jetstorm is in actuality a programmed shell personality given life by the [[spark]] of the Maximal [[Silverbolt (Fuzor)|Silverbolt]].

Jetstorm came online alongside fellow generals [[Tankor]] and [[Thrust (BM)|Thrust]] fairly early on in the Beast Machines conflict, when [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] realized that controlling his vast armies of Vehicon drones directly was beyond even his mental capacities. In order to more efficiently control his forces, he created the Vehicon generals to serve as field commanders answering directly to him. In order to give these generals life, he used the sparks of two captured Maximals and one Predacon, hoping that Optimus Primal and his crew would be reluctant to fight their former comrades-in-arms. For Jetstorm, he used the spark of the [[Fuzor]] Silverbolt.

Although Silverbolt's former lover, Blackarachnia, initially believed that it was Thrust who possessed the spark of her beloved, she soon discovered the truth, and went to great lengths (some would say obsessively so) to reawaken the Maximal spark Jetstorm held within. And what did she get for her trouble? A samurai chicken with serious issues. Sucks to be her.

Deciding that the Beast Warriors had contaminated their experiment, the Vok activated the second moon, transforming it into a giant laser weapon with which they planned to detonate the Energon seeded throughout the planet, wiping it clean of life. This plan was foiled by the Maximal leader, [[Optimus Primal (BW)|Optimus Primal]], but the vast majority of the raw Energon on the planet was transformed into stable, cube form. Eventually, the Maximals returned to Cybertron with the Predacon leader, [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] their prisoner. The only surviving Predacon, [[Waspinator (BW)|Waspinator]], was left on the planet as the leader of a tribe of protohumans. Although they eventually rejected him and he too returned to Cybertron, it is unclear precisely how much influence Waspinator may have had on the evolution of humanity and their culture. Many would find this dizzturbing.

Interestingly, by the time immediately prior to the Beast Wars, Earth and its sector in space was declared off-limits by order of the [[Maximal High Council]], and likely all information about it tightly regulated. In the 1940s, a crew of Autobots was dispatched to the planet to check up on things, unsuccessfully. In the present day, the biggest problem facing humanity is a lack of access to energy. [[Doctor Onishi]] is the world's foremost expert on locating and cataloguing new energy sources, and during the course of his work he located Fortress Maximus and some of the o-parts. Cue the ''second'' biggest problem for humanity, as their top energy expert is kidnapped by a giant robot hand.

After the first defeat of [[Unicron]], Earth was chosen as one of the planets to receive a [[Cyber Planet Key]], which would have reformatted the planet into a Transformer colony. However, the colony ship [[Atlantis]], also carrying the [[Omega Lock]], crashed onto the planet before it could begin its mission.

(Note: A lost undersea city was found earlier during the [[Transformers: Armada|Armada]] series, one powered by a [[Mini-Con]] from the [[Air Defense Mini-Con Team]]. A hologram described that the civilization had been quite advanced, but was destroyed by its own power. The human children deemed this city to be Atlantis, but it is possible that it was a completely different civilization.)

Some time later, when the [[Mini-Con|Mini-Cons]] fled Cybertron to escape being used as tools, their ship came out of warp above Earth. Impacting onto the planet's [[moon]], the Mini-Con ship broke in half sending a large chunk of the craft into Earth's atmosphere. [[Mini-Con storage panel|Mini-Con storage panels]] were spread across the globe and the ship itself crashed onto the surface, where they laid dormant for nearly a million years.{{storylink|First Contact}} Earth's fate being tied to that of Cybertron in the Unicron Trilogy is a form of predestination. Deciding that the Beast Warriors had contaminated their experiment, the Vok activated the second moon, transforming it into a giant laser weapon with which they planned to detonate the Energon seeded throughout the planet, wiping it clean of life. This plan was foiled by the Maximal leader, [[Optimus Primal (BW)|Optimus Primal]], but the vast majority of the raw Energon on the planet was transformed into stable, cube form. Eventually, the Maximals returned to Cybertron with the Predacon leader, [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] their prisoner. The only surviving Predacon, [[Waspinator (BW)|Waspinator]], was left on the planet as the leader of a tribe of protohumans. Although they eventually rejected him and he too returned to Cybertron, it is unclear precisely how much influence Waspinator may have had on the evolution of humanity and their culture. Many would find this dizzturbing.

Interestingly, by the time immediately prior to the Beast Wars, Earth and its sector in space was declared off-limits by order of the [[Maximal High Council]], and likely all information about it tightly regulated. How they managed this, since they arrived on Earth almost out of power and fairly hopelessly incompetant is unknown.

As the [[Aerialbot]]s pilot a survey vessel back to [[Earth]], they cross paths with a mysterious glowing meteorite that causes their craft to warp and twist out of shape. Alarmed, [[Ultra Magnus]] deploys the [[Technobot]]s as a rescue team, but they are obstructed by [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]], who reveal that that the meteorite - nicknamed [[Metamorpho]] by [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] - is a Decepticon creation.

Off in space, the Autobot [[Headmaster]]s head out in [[Fortress Maximus|Battleship Maximus]] to destroy the meteorite, only to find that it resists their firepower. Unable to deter the meteorite, the team instead enters the battle on Earth, which has been joined by Galvatron, the [[Sweep]]s and the [[Throttlebot]]s. During the fight, the over-eager Throttlebots sneak off in a shuttle to try and deal with the meteorite themselves, only to fall victim to its gravity-warping field. Realising that stopping Metamorpho will require a non-metallic agent, the Autobots request that one of their human allies plant bombs on the meteorite, but Spike is still recovering from wounds recently sustained in battle, leaving only the reluctant Daniel to perform the task. After a manly talk about manly things and how to be man from his father, Daniel agrees, and is suited up in a non-metallic spacesuit before leaving with Fortress. Daniel gets cold feet, but Fortress calms the boy with an impromptu bit of [[wikipedia:gurning|gurning]], and Daniel makes the leap. Successfully getting inside the meteorite, he blows up its gravity engines, forcing the Decepticons to retreat, and returns to [[Athenia]] to be hailed a hero.

==Detailed synopsis==

As the [[Aerialbot]]s pilot a survey vessel back to [[Earth]], they cross paths with a mysterious glowing meteorite that causes their craft to warp and twist out of shape. Alarmed, [[Ultra Magnus]] deploys the [[Technobot]]s as a rescue team, but they are obstructed by [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]], who reveal that that the meteorite - nicknamed [[Metamorpho]] by [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] - is a Decepticon creation.

Off in space, the Autobot [[Headmaster]]s head out in [[Fortress Maximus|Battleship Maximus]] to destroy the meteorite, only to find that it resists their firepower. Unable to deter the meteorite, the team instead enters the battle on Earth, which has been joined by Galvatron, the [[Sweep]]s and the [[Throttlebot]]s. During the fight, the over-eager Throttlebots sneak off in a shuttle to try and deal with the meteorite themselves, only to fall victim to its gravity-warping field. Realising that stopping Metamorpho will require a non-metallic agent, the Autobots request that one of their human allies plant bombs on the meteorite, but Spike is still recovering from wounds recently sustained in battle, leaving only the reluctant Daniel to perform the task. After a manly talk about manly things and how to be man from his father, Daniel agrees, and is suited up in a non-metallic spacesuit before leaving with Fortress. Daniel gets cold feet, but Fortress calms the boy with an impromptu bit of [[wikipedia:gurning|gurning]], and Daniel makes the leap. Successfully getting inside the meteorite, he blows up its gravity engines, forcing the Decepticons to retreat, and returns to [[Athenia]] to be hailed a hero.

The '''Autobot Matrix of Leadership''' (sometimes the '''Creation Matrix''') is an artifact of great power. It is traditionally carried by the current Autobot Leader.

Much about the Matrix remains a mystery, including its exact composition. It generally appears as a hollow, spherical metal shell with two handles on either side and with a core sphere of blueish crystal at its center. According to some, it carries part of the essence of [[Primus]].

The Matrix is the one thing, the only thing which [[Unicron]] fears.

The Matrix in the Generation 1 cartoon continuity possessed the accumulated wisdom of Transformers in the past. A bearer of the Matrix possesses the ability to journey within the Matrix to consult many of these beings, however, this action is quite dangerous as it can lead to one getting lost forever. Called the '''Creation Matrix''' (or the '''Genetic Matrix''' by the [[Keeper]]), it contains the essence of the Transformer's creator-god Primus, making it the one thing that can destroy Unicron. Possessing the Creation Matrix allows the bearer to grant new Transformer life to otherwise unsentient constructs. Also, when the human [[Buster Witwicky]] was in possession of it, he exhibited telekinetic power over all machines.

The fact that the Matrix was a physical object was generally unknown to all but [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] himself by the time of the [[Earth|Terran]] battles. But the powers of the Matrix weren't limited to the shell in his chest anyway. When his severed head was held captive by [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]], the Decepticon was able to force Prime to give life to the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]], even though the Autobots had his body (and therefore the physical Matrix) in the [[Ark]]. While it's possible that the power was simply being channeled ([[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] would do just that to create the [[Stunticon]]s), that seems unlikely given Prime's solution to the problem. When Buster infiltrated the Decepticon base, Prime had him connect electric cables between their heads, and he transferred the Matrix power into the human. Shockwave would later admit that he had been thwarted, as it had become impossible for Prime to create any new life.

Eventually Prime was rescued, and Buster returned the power to him, further cementing the notion that actual, usable Matrix energy had existed outside of the shell. And, as mentioned earlier, Megatron found yet another way to access the power. [[Bombshell]] planted a cerebro-shell in Optimus, and while it failed to take over his mind, it <i>did</i> provide some kind of conduit to the Matrix. Using Soundwave's broadcast abilities, Megatron tapped into the Matrix power when Prime gave life to the [[Aerialbot|Aerialbots]]. Thus, the Stunticons were born.

Not realizing his monopoly on the Matrix had been compromised anyway, Prime kept the secret of its physical shell very (pardon the pun) close to the chest. This would prove an unfortunate choice. When he died, his Autobot followers launched his body into space in accordance with a funereal rite. It landed on a distant planet's moon called VsQs, where it lay mostly undisturbed for a while. There, the Matrix exhibited a rudimentary consciousness that was aware of the passage of time and referred it itself as the collective of its past holders. It wasn't <i>literally</i> an amalgam of their souls, but rather a new, childlike, amoral being that had known the goodness of its Autobot bearers and now wanted more.

It got a chance at new experience when a dying [[Deathbringer]] crashed on VsQs and touched the Matrix. The Deathbringer - who had been dedicated to ending unnecessary suffering - was warped into a new and very powerful being who sought to destroy <i>all</i> life. Though he left the Matrix in Prime's body, he still carried some of its energy, and the Matrix reveled in the vicarious experience of evil.

That curiosity found more expression when an insectoid creature crawled into Prime's corpse's chest cavity and became the next recipient of the Matrix's power. The Matrix was fascinated that the creature seemed to be meant to do nothing but destroy, so it re-created the thing into a larger, more powerful predator. The monster attacked a team of astronauts that had set up a research station on VsQs, killing nearly all of them. At least one escaped, who crashed in the seas of [[Pequod]], another planet in the same solar system. "Awash with Matrix energy," he was swallowed by a [[klud]], which ingested the energy.

Meanwhile, Optimus had been resurrected in a new body, and when he became aware of the threat of Unicron, he realized he needed to find the Matrix again. So he sent search parties to track down the funeral barge, which piqued [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing's]] curiosity. As the opposing teams dodged each other, they eventually set their sights on Pequod, where the klud had been attracting attention because its species was supposed to have been extinct. Thunderwing, who believed himself to have an affinity with the Matrix, was able to psychically link with the Matrix-infused beast and see the memory of swallowing the dying scientist. Recognizing the "VsQs" stamp on his equipment, Thunderwing set out for that moon.

Once there, both sides battled the creature the Matrix had created, which had grown to enormous size. And it was Thunderwing who killed the beast and took the Matrix itself. The Decepticon immediately attacked the spaceborne [[Ark]], manifesting the Matrix power in the form of a giant, vaguely humanoid energy field around himself. The Matrix began to speak through him, delighting in the firsthand experience of evil. When he realized he was being possessed, he tried to mentally battle the Matrix, but to no avail. The Autobots managed to win the fight only barely, getting Thunderwing off the Ark and then leaving him stranded in space.

The Matrix took time to heal Thunderwing's body, then set out for Cybertron. Coincidentally, it arrived just as Unicron was trying to destroy the planet. The Matrix-creature fought Unicron, but Unicron defeated it because it had become evil, and Unicron was more powerful in that realm. It took Optimus Prime's touch to cleanse the Matrix of its taint and reveal once again its essential purity. Rocketing into the Chaos-Bringer's maw, Prime opened the Matrix, destroying both it and Unicron.

And it should've killed Prime too, but when his decimated body was found, it was still kept alive by that pesky leftover Matrix energy. That body <i>did</i> soon die, but Prime's consciousness transferred to [[Hi-Q]], who was later re-created into a new Optimus by the [[Last Autobot]]. This new body still contained Matrix energy, which the Decepticons coveted. Megatron defeated him in battle and sucked the energy into a siphon, which became the de facto new Matrix. He used it to create many new warriors, such as the [[Laser Rod]]s and [[Rotor Force]].

Then Starscream took it and used it on himself, merging with the [[Warworld]] and reshaping the interior of the ship. However, unlike with Thunderwing, Starscream found his own evil being subverted by the Matrix's goodness. Afraid of being changed, he returned the Matrix to Prime, and when Prime was consumed by the [[Swarm]], he gave the Matrix to <i>it.</i> This completely reversed the nature of the Swarm. It had previously been a physically dark, destructive cloud, but it suddenly became a bright "force for life" that made all the Transformers totally blissed out. It also re-created Prime, though it's unclear whether this new body still contained Matrix energy, or what form the Matrix then existed in at all.

Primacron eventually created Unicron, who rebeled against his maker. In the ensuing conflict Primacron was badly injured and his robotic-seeming assistant appeared destroyed. His Assistant survived however and out of his remains rose what appeared to be the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which then flew off into space. The Matrix of Leadership first documented appearance in modern times occurred when a dying [[Optimus Prime]] passed it, and Autobot Leadership to his chosen successor, [[Ultra Magnus]].

Before passing away, Prime spoke of a prophecy - that one day, "The Chosen One" would rise from the ranks of the Autobots, and use the power of the Matrix to light the Transformers' darkest hour. That darkest hour soon came upon Cybertron in the form of the world-eater, [[Unicron]], who knew that the Matrix's power was the one thing that could destroy him. Recreating Decepticon leader [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] as [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], he dispatched him to steal the Matrix, but when Galvatron obtained the talisman, he tried and failed to use its power against Unicron. Ultimately, the Chosen One who could open the Matrix proved to be the youthful [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]], who reclaimed the Matrix and was transformed by its power into [[Rodimus Prime]], before opening it within Unicron and releasing its power, which tore Unicron apart from within.

Later, when injured in battle, Rodimus's consciousness briefly entered the Matrix itself, and he discovered that it was more than a mere source of energy - it, in fact, contained the amassed wisdom of deceased Autobot leaders throughout history. Venturing into the Matrix a second time, Rodimus was shown the history of Cybertron by the ancient Autobots whose consciousnesses existed within the Matrix, revealing to him the [[Quintessons]] role in the creation of the Transformers. When he was resurrected, Optimus Prime later did the same thing when faced with the [[Hate Plague]], (which he ALSO seemed to claim as their "darkest hour"). To cure the madness of the plague he expelled all of the wisdom from within the Matrix, saving the universe, but emptying the Matrix and leaving only a shell. He claimed they would have to start filling it with wisdom again, from that moment on.

Optimus Prime eventually used the shell of the Matrix as a substitute key to access [[Vector Sigma]].

In later Japanese continuity a Matrix was seemingly carried by any individual with high rank. Therefore, there are many distinct Matrices. Prior to Optimus, the Matrix was held by [[Sentinel Prime]], an Autobot leader killed by Megatron in an attempt to gain possession of the artifact, intending to use it to power the planetary engine turbines he had discovered. But Sentinel had already given up the Matrix for reasons unknown (perhaps foreseeing his own death), passing it to the [[Council of Ancients]], who chose a data archivist named Optronix as the new bearer. Optronix and the Matrix were lowered into the [[Oracle Tank]], with the words "Fill this sacred vessel with the wisdom of the ages", though it may be that the council was referring to Optronix and not the Matrix. Like [[Hot Rod]], Optronix - now [[Optimus_Prime_(G1)|Optimus Prime]] - is physically changed by the installation of the Matrix, his frame altered to become larger and more powerful. Soon after, he is attacked by Megatron who cracks open his form and exposes the Matrix, which shows both Optimus and Megatron visions of the future, seeming to transport them to [[Earth]], then to [[Nebulon]]. It is implied that Optimus somehow uses the Matrix to force Megatron to forget these visions, though how much knowledge he himself retains is unknown.

Before the Autobots leave for [[Cybertron_(planet)|Cybertron]] on the [[Ark II]], Optimus Prime gives [[Spike Witwicky]] a piece of the Matrix to safeguard during their journey. The Ark II crashes, but when Spike and Optimus are reunited, Spike returns the piece to him. Optimus uses the complete Matrix of Leadership to awaken his deactivated troops and call them to him.

After returning to Cybertron, a chain of events ultimately leads Optimus Prime to a confrontation with [[Shockwave]] in the chamber containing Vector Sigma. Shockwave transforms and blows open Optimus Prime, claiming the Matrix for himself and using it to access Vector Sigma's databanks. Shockwave was defeated by [[Ultra Magnus]] and the Matrix returned to Optimus Prime, but the forceful removal of the Matrix from his body combined with the long period of time spent without it caused a great deal of trauma to his systems, necessitating an extended session in a CR chamber to recover, and suggesting that at least in the [[Dreamwave]] comics the Matrix actually integrates with the systems of its holder to some degree rather than merely residing inside them.

It appears that this Matrix does not hold the wisdom of past Autobot leaders, as [[Golden Disk (council)|another datatrak]] contained its wisdom.

==Beast Wars==
In the [[1990]]s animated series, [[Beast Wars]] and [[Beast Machines]] series, the nature of the Matrix was explored and evolved.

These series used "The Matrix" as a term that referred not merely to the physical object, but to an actual other-dimensional realm - the Transformer [[afterlife]] also called the [[Allspark (dimension)|Allspark]], the well of all sparks that are, have been, or ever shall be. From the Allspark springs all Transformer life, and when a Transformer dies, their spark returns to the Allspark, sharing its life experience with the collective, creating a huge store of accumulated wisdom and knowledge. Understanding this, it can be retroactively assumed that the physical Matrix object wielded by Autobot leaders in the cartoon continuity is not simply a storehouse of knowledge itself, but rather, a gateway to this afterlife realm. Seeing great potential in the young Autobot leader, Scavenger taught Optimus Prime how to fight in hand-to-hand combat. Later, veteran Autobot [[Landmine (Energon)|Landmine]] trained Optimus in [[metallikato]] shortly before leaving [[Cybertron]] with [[Rodimus (Energon)|Rodimus]]. Many years later, it is a more mature Optimus Prime that leads a small Autobot unit to [[Earth]] after the activation of the [[Mini-Con]] homing beacon. This distraction gives Optimus the opportunity to activate the Mini-Con panel, revealing that its occupant is [[Sparkplug (Armada)|Sparkplug]], Optimus Prime's old Mini-Con partner and friend. Galvatron is drawn towards Unicron's maw, with Prime holding onto his tank treads, telling him to hold on. His nemesis then makes the decision to sacrifice his life, giving Prime a final victory, so that Unicron may be destroyed and their race will survive.

Optimus Prime finds his way into the chamber just as Primus evolves the human child. A group of Predacons enter a swampy area, tracking any stray Maximals. There ''are'' Transformers in this swamp, but they are neither Maximal nor Predacon. They are [[Mutant (BW)|Mutants]]! [[Poison Bite]] stings [[Retrax]]; [[Soundwave (BW)|Soundwave]] takes a bite out of [[Powerpinch]]; [[Icebird]] takes down [[Transquito]]. [[Scourge (BW)|Scourge]] and [[Insecticon (BW)|Insecticon]] retreat.

Magmatron, [[Iguanus (BW)|Iguanus]], and [[Drill Bit (BW)|Drill Bit]] insert Ravage's spark into a [[stasis pod]], transforming the blank [[protoform]] within into [[Transmetal 2]] Ravage.

A short time later, Snarl, still salvaging parts, detects Magmatron nearing [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]]'s base. Megatron, returning from [[Changing of the Guard|a successful mission]], sends his troops [[Rampage (BW)|Rampage]] and [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]] on ahead. While Megatron is left alone, Magmatron slips out of chronal displacement. Megatron suspects that Magmatron has come to complete [[The Agenda, Part 1|Ravage's previous task]], and he promptly kicks Magmatron's sorry ass. Distracted, Drill Bit and Iguanus easily knock Megatron out.

Razorbeast realizes that, with Megatron now his prisoner, Magmatron will return to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to continue his plans for takeover. Razorbeast and Optimus Minor rush to stop him (repeating his gathering signal), while the others return to base with the parts.

Ravage dispatches [[Lazorbeak]], [[Buzz Saw (BW)|Buzz Saw]], [[Injector]], [[Sky Shadow (BW)|Sky Shadow]], and [[Jetstorm (BW)|Jetstorm]] to locate the Maximal base.

Magmatron prepares to send Megatron back to Cybertron as an offering to gain favor with the [[Tripredacus Council]]. Razorbeast and Optimus Primal, watching from cover, discuss how to take down Magmatron. As if on cue, a distraction arrives in the form of [[Grimlock]]!
