It's not so much that '''Rattrap''' is a coward... he just doesn't want to die. He's seen enough battles to know the score, so he's not afraid to tell his commanding officer to shove it if he's not fond of the odds. He prefers to sneak around unseen, in gutters or trenches or trash barges or what have you -- whatever keeps him out of harm's way. He shouldn't be so worried. When he does encounter conflict, he deals with it masterfully with the arsenal of guns and bombs he keeps on himself at all times. He feels naked without them.

It's hard to like Rattrap, especially if you're his commanding officer. He's sarcastic, irreverent, and rude. Plus he smells (''why'' he smells is a mystery). He's also not the most trusting or forgiving sort, so he's not the best choice to take on a diplomatic run. He'd sooner shoot a [[Predacon]] or [[Decepticon]] than talk to him.

Rattrap was a crewmember of the exploration ship [[Axalon (BW)|''Axalon'']] when captain [[Optimus Primal (BW)|Optimus Primal]] got word that the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] criminal [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] had stolen the [[Golden Disk]] and a [[Darkside|ship]] with [[transwarp]] capabilities. The ''Axalon'' was the closest vessel that also possessed a transwarp drive, so Rattrap's ship was sent to engage them. After following the Predacons through a transwarp portal and appearing above a mysterious planet, both ships were damaged in the ensuing space battle, and before both ships crashed into the planet's surface below, the [[stasis pod]]s carrying the rest of Rattrap's crew were ejected into orbit.

The planet was rich with [[energon]] -- so much so that prolonged exposure would short out their bodies, so the Maximals and Predacons were forced to take organic forms from the local creatures. Rattrap took the form of a rat. Rattrap was annoyed to be on an unknown planet with a young, inexperienced captain, and so he continually second-guessed Optimus Primal's command decisions. This made him few friends. Rattrap especially disliked Primal's decision to allow the Predacon [[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]] to join their team. Rattrap distrusted Dinobot and insulted him at every turn. Dinobot wantonly returned in kind, dressing down the "vermin."

Dinobot and Rattrap's arguements quickly turned from irritation and chaos in the Maximal ranks to being the complete norm. After the Axalon crash-lands back on Earth due to the Predacon attack, Rattrap begins to insult Dinobot, claiming he was almost home on Cybertron. Optimus Primal remarks, "I wouldn't have it any other way."

Soon, Rattrap and Dinobot were surprised to find they were actually friends, their constant ribbing at each other becoming a strange companionship. This love-hate relationship was disrupted when Dinobot temporarily returned to the Predacon side. Dinobot's heroic sacrifice to save the future, however, truly moved Rattrap, and he honestly misses his friend. {{Storylink|Code of Hero}}

After the Beast Wars ended, the Maximals finally made it back to Cybertron, only
to find Tankor drones scanning every trace of the planet. When they notice the
Maximals, they shot containers holding a transformation virus gas at them,
devolving them back into their organic beast forms and erasing any prior memory of the event. Eventually Rattrap joined up with [[Cheetor]], [[Blackarachnia]] and [[Optimus Primal]], who led them to the [[Oracle]] which reformatted them into their techno-organic bodies. It took a while for Rattrap to learn to transform again. He even used a counter-virus ''Megatron'' designed for transforming, but it made Rattrap lose control of his transformations. When [[Botanica]] joined the Maximals, Rattrap fell in love with her, and she fell in love with him, all the way through the end of the war. Sadly, Rattrap never used his legs in the series, showing him only as a wheeling robot.

Rattrap was among the Maximals gathered at Memorial Spaceport to welcome the wayward [[Autobots]] [[Sunstreaker]], [[Sideswipe]], [[Trailbreaker]], [[Roulette]] and [[Shadow Striker]] back to Cybertron approximately one year after the reformatting of Cybertron, and bore witness to their abduction by Unicron. Later, he was attacked on Cybertron by Blackarachnia, who had also been abducted and corrupted by the chaos-bringer, but was saved by the recently-resurrected [[Depth Charge]].

While Rattrap retained much of his sarcastic, obnoxious-nature in the Japanese dub of the TV series, he was played quite a bit younger or more childishly irritating.

To piggy-back on the popularity of the ''Pokemon'' phenomenon of the late '90s, or perhaps just to parody it, Rattrap's beast mode was redesigned to heavily resemble ''Pikachu'' for the ''Beast Wars Metals'' manga. While many characters received "humorous" redesigns for the manga, Rattrap's remains the most reviled.

* In an extremely strange precursor of things to come in ''Beast Machines'', Mainframe's original concept for Rattrap during ''Beast Wars'' was to capitalize on the exposed "brain" of the toy and make Rattrap a deeply flawed character. Originally, Rattrap's scanning and transformation technology was to fail, leaving him basically half-formed, with an exposed brain, wiring, "veins", an assymetrical body, arms of uneven lengths, and malformed organic sections in robot mode. On top of all that, he was hooked up to a "colostomy bag-like heating cable" to stress his need for life support. Rattrap's overall story arc would have been, of course, about him accepting and overcoming his near fatal flaws. This approach was entirely nixed by the limits of CGI in rendering convincing organic innards at the time... and the fact that his model would have been massively far off from the actual toy probably also factored into it. However, the idea of a defective transformer ''was'' later revisited in season 2 with the introduction of [[Transmutate]].

* On Transmetal Wal-Mart Rattrap/Packrat: According to [[3H]], they were on the phone discussing exclusives with their at-the-time Hasbro contact, when he (the Hasbro guy) realized that the not-yet-released blue Wal-Mart Rattrap could have been named Packrat. After all, Dead End just depresses himself, but Dreadwind manages to export the feeling to everyone around him. Like a bad case of [[Scraplet]]s, Dreadwind's gloom is contagious and there's no mood so positive that he can't kill it within moments of entering the room. Mournful and doom-laden at the best of times, Decepticons avoid him socially and [[Autobots]] avoid him on the battlefield, leaving Dreadwind wracked with loneliness and despair.

He tends to think that he has no friends, but the truth is that he couldn't have a more perfect match than his partner [[Darkwing]], and the two are fairly inseparable. He gets along less well with his binary-bonded [[Nebulan]] [[Powermaster]] partner [[Hi-Test]], a villainous, overachieving perfectionist who tries to bully Dreadwind into enjoying their evil acts.

Dreadwind and Darkwing came to [[Nebulos]] in search of [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]]'s group of Decepticons, but they had by then moved on to [[Earth]]. Furthermore, they were warned by the scientist [[Hi-Q]] that if they stayed on Nebulos, they would perish, as the Nebulans had poisoned their world's entire fuel supply to prevent another war with the Transformers from occurring. Dreadwind and Darkwing ignored this request, and eventually they lanquished on the brink of permanent shutdown.

Hi-Q's jealous protege, [[Hi-Test]], and his accomplice [[Throttle (G1)|Throttle]] offered Dreadwind and his partner salvation, by way of [[Powermaster]] technology stolen from Hi-Q. The dying Decepticon duo reluctantly agreed, and, restored, they began destroying Nebulos once again. Hi-Q and his scientists were forced to undergo the Powermaster process themselves, [[binary bonding]] with [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and a few others. Ultimately, Dreadwind and Darkwing were forced off Nebulos. {{storylink|People Power!}}

Dreadwind, Darkwing, and their Powermaster partners eventually found themselves working for the [[Mecannibal]]s at [[Grand Central Space Station]], wrangling not only clients, but robots for the Mecannibals to devour. Dreadwind and Darkwing were present during the battle with [[Unicron]]. {{storylink|On the Edge of Extinction!}} Though they survived, the pair was even more mopey than usual, and on their way to a joint Autobot/Decepticon conference to discuss the imminent demise of their homeworld, Dreadwind was hit on the noggin by a large piece of falling debris. {{storylink|Exodus!}} Dreadwind was shaken, but survived to escape Cybertron on a starship with several other Decepticons led by [[Bludgeon]], stranding the Autobots behind to die. Dreadwind was a part of Darkwing's Infiltration unit on Nebulos when the planet was ravaged by a resurrected, supernaturally-powerful [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]]. Darkwing ordered Dreadwind and the other Decepticons under his command to try to stop Thunderwing before he blew up the planet, which would ruin their long-reaching plans to harvest its natural resources, but all but Dreadwind, Darkwing, and [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]] were annihilated. One of the original team of Decepticons that accompanied [[Megatron]] on the attack of the ''[[Ark]]'' spacecraft, Ravage was reformatted by [[Teletraan-1]] as an audiocassette to better blend in for operations based on Earth. Ravage served loyally as a Decepticon spy. He was one of the first Transformers to have been encountered by a human, as workers investigating a destroyed power station fell afoul of Ravage who pounced upon them and frightened them away.

Shortly thereafter, Ravage accompanied Soundwave on an infiltration mission to gather data from Teletraan 1. Though Soundwave was discovered, Ravage was captured in an energy net and held captive. The Decepticon spy figured into a disinformation plot hatched by the Autobots, who purposely leaked the presence of a rocket fuel depository in the outlying desert. In truth, there was no rocket base -- Autobot [[Hound]] projected a holographic illusion in the hopes of luring the Decepticons into a trap. The Autobots allowed Ravage to escape and report back to Megatron, who easily saw through the ruse.

Ravage is one of the few Decepticon warriors who was granted amnesty at the end of the Great War and reformatted into a Predacon. He was sent by the [[Tripredacus Council]] to capture [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]], clean up any messes he might have made, and deal with the rest of the beast warriors. Ravage made the trip to prehistoric Earth in a specially modified stealth [[Transwarp Cruiser]]. He successfully contacted the [[Maximal]]s and allied with them to capture Megatron. Megatron, however, had one more card to play. He knew that Ravage wasn't going to let any of the Beast warriors live, and also knew he had the one thing that would turn Ravage to his side. Ravage's part in the Binaltech storyline is a bit more complicated than past incarnations. Several years prior to the line's continuity, government-run [[Intelligence and Information Institute]] (or Triple I) unearths a msyterious black box during an archaeological dig. After years of probing, the container, dubbed "Schrödinger's Box" by the group's scientists, was revealed to be the flight recorder of Predacon Ravage's stealth ship, containing a copy of the feline's personality and memory engrams. When the scientists found a way to communicate with this personality, it offered them its knowledge of future events in exchange for a new body. Triple-I agreed, and used a fake Binaltech project to provide their part of the bargain. However, to truly bring the new Ravage to life, Triple-I stole the present-day Ravage - who had been somehow captured by the [[Earth Defense Command]] and stasis-locked into his cassette mode - and implanted him into the new Ravage, thereby 'fusing' the old and new Ravages into one.

This new Ravage, however, had no intention of fulfilling his end of the bargain and, after eliminating his benefactors and learning to his shock that history did ''not'' change in his faction's favor, decided to rectify his mistake. First on his agenda was his former commander, Megatron; stealing an Autobot shuttle, he located and repaired the [[Kronosphere]] and - during a decisive battle between Megatron's and Optimus Prime's forces that would have normally ended with the Autobots being forced off of Cybertron and into their moon bases - turned the weapon on his own faction, trapping Megatron and his crew in a space-time rift. This alteration in the timeline served two purposes: first, it would give the Autobots the chance to retake Cybertron, which would then lead to them having to face off against the oncoming [[Unicron]] alone, severely weakening them in the process. The second, and more important, purpose was to keep Megatron alive and in good health, thus preventing him from becoming the insane [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], and allowing him to lead the Decepticons to victory over the battle-weary Autobots. Ravage also reformatted [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] into a new Binaltech body of his own, so he could lead the remaining Decepticons in Megatron's absence, and secretly drailed many of the Autobots' supply missions, further weakening them for their battle with the Chaos Bringer.

Unfortunately for him, the Autobot named [[Overdrive]] became aware of Ravage's meddling in history, thanks to his acute sensitivity of the timestream, and - with the help of [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] - captured the wayward Decepticon and forced a confession out of him. Ravage, however, was not without a trump card, revealing that his alterations ''may'' prevent the deaths of many of the Autobots destined to die in the normal timeline (which, as a distinction between the two, was dubbed 'Prime Time' by Wheeljack, Ravage's altered timeline being called 'Ravage Time'), though in the grand scheme of things, only Optimus could not be considered expendable, as he contained the one thing that could bring down Unicron (the [[Autobot]] [[Matrix of Leadership]]). By the time of his capture, however, Unicron had already been sighted on a collision course with Cybertron and, despite the temptation of preventing future deaths among his ranks, Optimus decided Ravage's plans to be too dangerous to allow to come to fruitition.
