:Rampage is a Transmetal Predacon from the Beast Wars portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.
Rampage (also known as Protoform X) is an awesomely powerful and brutal Predacon, easily among the most fearsome from the entire Beast Wars. A serial killer/cannibal, he is feared through-out Cybertron and all its colonies. Rampage's immortal spark ensures that his twisted brand of horror and misery will live-on as long as he does (presumably forever).
Voice Actor: Campbell Lane (US); Nobuyuki Hiyama (Japan)

Rampage was created by a Maximal experiment to recreate Starscream's mutant, immortal Spark. His spark is located in his left breast, similar to a human heart. Though argueably successful in this regard, the creation (then called Protoform X) was unstable. In point of fact, he was criminally insane. He destroyed Colony Omicron, killing all of its inhabitants save a lone security officer, Depth Charge, who would eventually track him down and capture him. Afterwards, the Maximal Elders had him placed into a stasis pod aboard an exploration vessel, the Axalon. They instructed its commander, Optimus Primal, to dump him on some barren world in deep space.

Rampage was in one of the several stasis pods jettisoned by Optimus when the Axalon was damaged by Megatron's Predacons, and only fell out of orbit far into the Beast Wars. Battle near his stasis pod shocked Rampage into activation, and he promptly set out to terrorize all nearby Transformers. After Rampage was defeated, Megatron discovered him and, using a blade of pure Energon, removed a portion of his indestructible spark. Megatron placed his portion of Rampage's spark in a special cage lined with Energon crystals, which allowed him to torture him whenever Megs desired, thereby forcing Rampage to swear fealty.

Though a violent sociopath, Rampage was not without compassion. He found a kindred spirit in the badly damaged Transmutate, and sought to protect it from the other Predacons. When Transmutate was killed, Rampage bellowed in grief. Transmutate (Beast Wars episode)

Later, Depth Charge arrived on prehistoric Earth with the single-minded goal of destroying Rampage. Depth Charge's loss had embittered him, and Rampage used this emotional wound to torment the Maximal. They met in battle numerous times, fairly evenly matched. While Megatron was retrieving the submerged Decepticon craft Nemesis, Depth Charge met Rampage in battle one last time. At the battle's climax, Rampage allowed Depth Charge to kill him with a shard of raw Energon, resulting in a fantastic explosion which destroyed both. Rampage won even in death, laughing maniacally in triumph as Depth Charge made the final stabbing blow.

Except that Depth Charge came back to life.
:The Rampage toy was an Ultra Transmetal with the alternate modes being a king crab and a tank, which used rubber treads. Rolling the tank activated the wheel in the toy's missile launcher, having up to three missiles fire off. The location of four of the crab legs in the show is not accurate to the toy; the show has the legs on the shoulder pads, whereas the toy suits the legs on Rampage's arms.

A stasis pod is used to store a Transformer protoform newborn until it has its spark installed, is given programming, and is formatted into a functional adult Transformer. The protoform is sealed safely inside the stasis pod, supported by nothing more than a lubricating fluid. In normal use, an exploration ship will carry several stasis pods, seed a planet with them, and the stasis pods would scan for native forms and birth new Transformer life.

Additionally, some of such a vessel's stasis pods will house "blank" protoforms, which are lifeless and do not contain sparks. One such blank protoform was used by Rhinox to restore Optimus Primal to life; Megatron used another blank to create Dinobot 2. These blank protoforms are likely to serve as backup bodies; should any of the crew be damaged beyond repair, their spark and memories can be transferred into the protoform. Blank stasis pods may also result from pods that crashed but were damaged to the point where the spark extinguished leaving a blank stasis pod.

Because a stasis pod's life support functions are so efficient, they can also be used to transport adult Transformers, usually for long-distance travel. Characteristics and memories are stored via data-tracks which are extremely fragile, no stasis pod inhabitant in the Beast Wars cartoon continuity landed with their memories intact. Stasis pods have also been used to carry sentenced criminals into exile. (For example, the Axalon carried the murderous Protoform X and the thief Packrat.)
