Grimlock isn't much for subtlety. Well, he does like to sneak up on the panicked Decepticons that are desperately fleeing the attacks of his aerial partner Swoop, but soon as they get in range of tooth and claw, he becomes a storm of violence, ripping into them mercilessly. Even though he is equipped with some heavy built-in firepower, he'd much rather take the up-close and personal approach to battle, especially bringing out the "big guns" by combining with Swoop to form the monstrous Mega-Dinobot.
During the Unicron Singularity crisis, Grimlock served aboard the Autobot flagship Iron Hope. However, a variety of factors shuffled the set into Energon and new-character-dom.

* This set was not "mech-designed" or engineered by Takara employees, a rarity for normal-series Transformers toys.

* Grimlock's online bio at the then-Energon-themed Hasbro Transformers website described him as being "armed to the nines", despite a total absence of weapons and (due to his small fist holes) the inability even to use the Energon weapons available in the line.
The proper Romanization of Japanese character names can sometimes be unclear. This wiki notes such ambiguities if they are considered significant.

In fandom the term Romanization is frequently (and incorrectly) used to refer to Japanese misspelling of English words.

Japanese and English
Any writing system is (at best) an approximation of the sounds it represents. The Japanese writing system distinguishes between fewer phonemes than most. This does not mean the language lacks those phonemes... English has more than 26 sounds, which is denoted by character-combinations ("ch" makes a sound that is not the combination of the mouth-movements for "c" and "h", but a close cousin), but even those combinations are imperfect; the double-o represents different sounds in "cook" and "spook".

Notably the Japanese script does not distinguish between the sounds "l" and "r", and English-speaking Japanese lack a mechanism for distinguishing the sounds in other languages. Foreign words in Japan frequently acquire creative spellings as a result of being rendered "down" into the Japanese script then re-Romanized; in such situations "Engrish" is a perfectly logical rendering. Accuracy is generally a low priority, as English characters are generally used to look cool, not make sense to Japanese children.

In fairness, we mangled the name of their entire country. And it's happened back-to-front in Transformers, now.

Notorious and hilarious Romanizations in Transformers
Romanization confusion can either be;

# Improper Japanese rendering of English names
# Words whose English spelling is open to interpretation.

* Minelba—Minerva
* Butt—Blot
* Clerken—Kraken
* "Comvoy", used on the packaging for Transformers: Mystery of Convoy
* Variations of "Destron", including "Deathtron" and "Destoron"
* Deszaras
* Rartorata
* Transformers Collection Chear
* A questionable case would be the various Japanese Mirage toys named "Rijie" (Robot Masters, Binaltech)—although the character's name was based on the original toy's vehicle mode, a Ligier racing car, Takara's insistence on using a Romanization of the name that's considerably different from the car manufacturer's name might hint at a willful decision.

When the world's destiny is at stake, when all hope seems to be lost, when every hero has been defeated, an uncanny team arises from the depths of despair, forming the most unlikely alliance to restore Hope and Justice. They are known as... the Substitute Autobots!

Yup, we're all pretty much doomed.

The team's line-up is:
*Sari Sumdac (Leader)
*Scrapper
*Snarl
*Wreck-Gar

Fiction
Animated cartoon
When the Earth-bound Autobots and the full population of Detroit were under the control of Soundwave, Sari Sumdac went to Dinobot Island, hoping to find some help to rescue them. But Grimlock and Swoop were less than responsive to her call. Determined to not give up, Sari pursued her quest and finally located Scrapper and the newly named Snarl. She quickly managed to convince them to return with her to the city. On their way, they met Wreck-Gar, who was all too happy to join the team. Thus was born the ragtag unit called the Substitute Autobots, with Sari naturally taking the lead. Well, theoretically.

Before they were even able to concoct a concrete plan, they lost both the element of surprise and their outnumbering advantage, having to face not only Soundwave, but also the whole of Optimus Prime's brainwashed team. With little choice, Sari gave the order to attack, but the fight didn't go well at first—Wreck Gar was a little too over-obedient to follow any order and also lacked adequate equipment, Scrapper was simply ineffective, and Snarl had just not yet understood what he was supposed to do. Having to deal with both Laserbeak and Soundwave, Sari ended up losing control of her jet-pack and was ejected into the snow, soon followed by the rest of her team.

Realizing Soundwave wouldn't be able to control all the Autobots in separate activities at the same time, Sari ordered they attack separately. Snarl charged on Ratchet, Scrapper took on Bulkhead, Wreck-Gar faced Bumblebee and Prowl, and she herself dealt with Optimus Prime, effectively giving too much for the Decepticon to handle at once. Snarl overpowered and tied up Ratchet while Scrapper froze Bulkhead. The team was finally getting the hang of things and was beginning to take the upper hand in the battle. And then Wreck-Gar played some accordion... Bumblebee and Prowl tried to attack Sari, although Prowl's attack was strangely...helpful. Wreck-Gar finally immobilized Bumblebee, which meant the only ones left were Prowl and Optimus Prime. Not bad for a bunch of losers. Unfortunately, Soundwave could now focus total control on Optimus, knowing that was all he needed to win the battle. Optimus rapidly overpowered Scrapper, Snarl and Wreck-Gar and was about to chop down Sari, when Prowl, whose attempts to resist Soundwave had finally succeeded, struck with his shurikens. Soundwave lost control of Prime, who was relieved to see he hadn't harmed Sari. From this point on, the Substitute Autobots let Optimus Prime deal with the problem. He dealt with it pretty good.

After that, the team disbanded, Scrapper judging it was just not worth the pain (and lack of overtime pay), Snarl simply wanting to go home, and Sari being all too happy her management duties were over. As for Wreck-Gar, well, his mind was already on something else...

And so ended the brief, shining(?) career of the Substitute Autobots...til next time? Human Error, Part II
