One of the original team of Decepticons that accompanied [[Megatron]] on the attack of the ''[[Ark]]'' spacecraft, Ravage was reformatted by [[Teletraan-1]] as an audiocassette to better blend in for operations based on Earth. Ravage served loyally as a Decepticon spy. He was one of the first Transformers to have been encountered by a human, as workers investigating a destroyed power station fell afoul of Ravage who pounced upon them and frightened them away.

Shortly thereafter, Ravage accompanied Soundwave on an infiltration mission to gather data from Teletraan 1. Though Soundwave was discovered, Ravage was captured in an energy net and held captive. The Decepticon spy figured into a disinformation plot hatched by the Autobots, who purposely leaked the presence of a rocket fuel depository in the outlying desert. In truth, there was no rocket base -- Autobot [[Hound]] projected a holographic illusion in the hopes of luring the Decepticons into a trap. The Autobots allowed Ravage to escape and report back to Megatron, who easily saw through the ruse.

Ravage is one of the few Decepticon warriors who was granted amnesty at the end of the Great War and reformatted into a Predacon. He was sent by the [[Tripredacus Council]] to capture [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]], clean up any messes he might have made, and deal with the rest of the beast warriors. Ravage made the trip to prehistoric Earth in a specially modified stealth [[Transwarp Cruiser]]. He successfully contacted the [[Maximal]]s and allied with them to capture Megatron. Due to the stealth capabilities of his ship, and the fact that [[Tarantulas]] was also an agent of the council, Ravage and the Maximals easily captured Megatron and imprisoned him. {{Storylink|The Agenda, Part 1}}

Megatron, however, had one more card to play. He knew that Ravage wasn't going to let any of the Beast warriors live, and also knew he had the one thing that would turn Ravage to his side. Ravage's part in the Binaltech storyline is a bit more complicated than past incarnations. Several years prior to the line's continuity, government-run [[Intelligence and Information Institute]] (or Triple I) unearths a msyterious black box during an archaeological dig. After years of probing, the container, dubbed "Schrödinger's Box" by the group's scientists, was revealed to be the flight recorder of Predacon Ravage's stealth ship, containing a copy of the feline's personality and memory engrams. When the scientists found a way to communicate with this personality, it offered them its knowledge of future events in exchange for a new body. Triple-I agreed, and used a fake Binaltech project to provide their part of the bargain. However, to truly bring the new Ravage to life, Triple-I stole the present-day Ravage - who had been somehow captured by the [[Earth Defense Command]] and stasis-locked into his cassette mode - and implanted him into the new Ravage, thereby 'fusing' the old and new Ravages into one.

This new Ravage, however, had no intention of fulfilling his end of the bargain and, after eliminating his benefactors and learning to his shock that history did ''not'' change in his faction's favor, decided to rectify his mistake. First on his agenda was his former commander, Megatron; stealing an Autobot shuttle, he located and repaired the [[Kronosphere]] and - during a decisive battle between Megatron's and Optimus Prime's forces that would have normally ended with the Autobots being forced off of Cybertron and into their moon bases - turned the weapon on his own faction, trapping Megatron and his crew in a space-time rift. This alteration in the timeline served two purposes: first, it would give the Autobots the chance to retake Cybertron, which would then lead to them having to face off against the oncoming [[Unicron]] alone, severely weakening them in the process. The second, and more important, purpose was to keep Megatron alive and in good health, thus preventing him from becoming the insane [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], and allowing him to lead the Decepticons to victory over the battle-weary Autobots. Ravage also reformatted [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] into a new Binaltech body of his own, so he could lead the remaining Decepticons in Megatron's absence, and secretly drailed many of the Autobots' supply missions, further weakening them for their battle with the Chaos Bringer.

Unfortunately for him, the Autobot named [[Overdrive]] became aware of Ravage's meddling in history, thanks to his acute sensitivity of the timestream, and - with the help of [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheljack]] - captured the wayward Decepticon and forced a confession out of him. Ravage, however, was not without a trump card, revealing that his alterations ''may'' prevent the deaths of many of the Autobots destined to die in the normal timeline (which, as a distinction between the two, was dubbed 'Prime Time' by Wheeljack, Ravage's altered timeline being called 'Ravage Time'), though in the grand scheme of things, only Optimus could not be considered expendable, as he contained the one thing that could bring down Unicron (the [[Autobot]] [[Matrix of Leadership]]). By the time of his capture, however, Unicron had already been sighted on a collision course with Cybertron and, despite the temptation of preventing future deaths among his ranks, Optimus decided Ravage's plans to be too dangerous to allow to come to fruitition. To that end, he ropes [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] into helping him fly to Unicron in a preemptive strike against the monstrous threat, while the other Autobots (left in the command of [[Skids (G1)|Skids]]), were to initiate "Operation: Distant Thunder", which involved sending a copy of Wheeljack's memories of what Ravage confessed to them, back in time to a point prior to the Decepticon panther's meddling, via the energies located on [[Dinobot Island]]. If "Operation: Distant Thunder" worked as planned, Ravage's plans would be foiled, and any tremors in the timeline he caused would be smoothed over by "Project Body Shop" (aka, the Binaltech project). However, just as Skids gives the signal to transmit the memory engrams, the Autobot base is rocked by an entire fleet of Decepticons. Shortly thereafter, Ravage accompanied Soundwave on an infiltration mission to gather data from Teletraan 1. Though Soundwave was discovered, Ravage was captured in an energy net and held captive. After years of probing, the container, dubbed "Schrödinger's Box" by the group's scientists, was revealed to be the flight recorder of Predacon Ravage's stealth ship, containing a copy of the feline's personality and memory engrams. When the scientists found a way to communicate with this personality, it offered them its knowledge of future events in exchange for a new body. Triple-I agreed, and used a fake Binaltech project to provide their part of the bargain. However, to truly bring the new Ravage to life, Triple-I stole the present-day Ravage - who had been somehow captured by the [[Earth Defense Command]] and stasis-locked into his cassette mode - and implanted him into the new Ravage, thereby 'fusing' the old and new Ravages into one.

This new Ravage, however, had no intention of fulfilling his end of the bargain and, after eliminating his benefactors and learning to his shock that history did ''not'' change in his faction's favor, decided to rectify his mistake. First on his agenda was his former commander, Megatron; stealing an Autobot shuttle, he located and repaired the [[Kronosphere]] and - during a decisive battle between Megatron's and Optimus Prime's forces that would have normally ended with the Autobots being forced off of Cybertron and into their moon bases - turned the weapon on his own faction, trapping Megatron and his crew in a space-time rift. This alteration in the timeline served two purposes: first, it would give the Autobots the chance to retake Cybertron, which would then lead to them having to face off against the oncoming [[Unicron]] alone, severely weakening them in the process. The second, and more important, purpose was to keep Megatron alive and in good health, thus preventing him from becoming the insane [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], and allowing him to lead the Decepticons to victory over the battle-weary Autobots. Unfortunately for him, the Autobot named [[Overdrive]] became aware of Ravage's meddling in history, thanks to his acute sensitivity of the timestream, and - with the help of [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheljack]] - captured the wayward Decepticon and forced a confession out of him. Ravage, however, was not without a trump card, revealing that his alterations ''may'' prevent the deaths of many of the Autobots destined to die in the normal timeline (which, as a distinction between the two, was dubbed 'Prime Time' by Wheeljack, Ravage's altered timeline being called 'Ravage Time'), though in the grand scheme of things, only Optimus could not be considered expendable, as he contained the one thing that could bring down Unicron (the [[Autobot]] [[Matrix of Leadership]]). By the time of his capture, however, Unicron had already been sighted on a collision course with Cybertron and, despite the temptation of preventing future deaths among his ranks, Optimus decided Ravage's plans to be too dangerous to allow to come to fruitition. The '''Golden Disk''' is a recurring object throughout the Beast Wars series, beginning with the first episode, [[Beast Wars, Part 1]]. It plays a major role in the escalation of the conflict between the [[Maximal]]s and the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacons]], and lead to the death of a major character. It was destroyed in the episode [[Code of Hero]], but the Predacon leader, [[Megatron_(BW)|Megatron]] recovered one of the shards and used it in the episode [[The Agenda, Part 2]] to escape capture at the hands of a Cybertronian government agent.

[[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]] breaks into the [[Darkside|Predacon base]] and steals the Golden Disk. He then climbs to a high peak where he pontificates to himself about the potential power the wielder of the Golden Disk could hold, and the potential danger that comes with it. He eventually decides that the most prudent thing to do is to hide the disk beneath a large rock.

Dinobot rejoins the Predacon ranks, and then, to prove his loyalty to Megatron, he leads Megatron to the location of the Golden Disk and presents it to him. Shortly afterwards, Dinobot defects to the Maximals once again, but Megatron escapes with the Golden Disk.

Dinobot notices that the pattern the Predacon's have been setting up their new jamming towers in matches the shape and layout of the symbols on the Golden Disk. Not long afterwards, Megatron does so, discovering through the images contained in the Disk that he has the power to alter the timeline. The Predacons attack the valley from which humanity's ancestors will emerge, but Dinobot launches a one-man berserker attack on the Preds, single-handedly defeating them and shattering the Golden Disk with his last bit of energy.

Megatron is captured by Covert Agent Ravage for violations of the Pax Cybertronia, but reveals that he still possesses a lone fragment of the Golden Disk, which contains a message encoded by the original Megatron. He plays it for Ravage, convincing the former Decepticon to release and join forces with him.

===Within ''Beast Wars''===
Sometime within roughly a decade of when the Transformers aboard the [[Ark]] awoke in the eruption of [[Mount Saint Hilary]] (possibly earlier, possibly later) the humans of planet Earth launched a spacecraft to study the outer planets in their solar system. Attached to this spacecraft was a gold disk which contained information about Earth. The Decepticon leader, [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], at some point encoded an additional message on the disk.

Megatron's message was even more of a "message in a bottle" than the disk itself, although the complete message was never revealed. He orders any Decepticons who might, in the future, come across the message to use [[transwarp]] technology to achieve some particular end -- exactly what, however, is unrevealed because the disk was destroyed before the message was ever played on-camera. [[Megatron (BW)|BW Megatron]] plays only a surviving fragment of the message for [[Ravage]]. Presumably, the rest of the message indicates the location of the Ark and asks that future Decepticons use transwarp to travel through time and rewrite history, much as BW Megatron attempts to do.

At some point between G1 Megatron adding his message to the disk and the beginning of the ''Beast Wars'' series, the spacefract holding the disk -- or perhaps only the disk -- fell into the hands of the Transformers. BW Megatron is said to have stolen the disk from the Cybertron Archives, where it was seemingly considered a precious artifact, even though the general population of Maximals had no idea what it really was (and even some Predacons - like the reformatted Decepticon Ravage - didn't have a clue). The [[Maximal Elder]]s were presumably aware of the Disk's origin.

The nature of the connection between the Golden Disk and the mysteriously similar [[Alien Disk]] is completely unknown.

===The real Golden Disk===

The Golden Disk that appears in ''Beast Wars'' is based on a real object: In 1977, NASA launched two sparecraft called ''Voyager 1'' and ''Voyager 2'', which flew by our planetary system's four gas giants. (Jupiter and Saturn were visited by both craft, Uranus and Neptune only by ''Voyager 2''.) The ''Pioneer 10'' and ''11'' spacecraft which preceded them had carried copies of a plaque depicting human beings and showing the location of Earth with respect to several highly-visible pulsars. For the ''Voyager'' mission, a more sophisticated message was composed.

The "disk" consists of a cover or canister -- on which a set of pictograms are found -- and a phonograph record inside the canister. The record, titled "The Sounds of Earth", has a "data" portion and a sound portion. In the data portion are over a hundred encoded images including photographs of the Earth and its lifeforms, as well as drawings of human biology and reproduction. The audio portion includes sounds of natural environments on Earth, wildlife, human voices, and music. The pictograms on the record's cover explain how to play the disc and decode the images.

As portrayed in ''Beast Wars'', the Golden Disk seems to be an amalgam of the cover and the record itself. It appears to be at least a few centimeters thick and has the cover's pictograms on one side, but the record grooves and title "The Sounds of Earth" on the other. The indication is that the cover is one-sided, and we are seeing the record through the empty rear, as later episodes would present the disc in its real-life, thin, record form.

The dictionary gives several definitions of a '''"gimmick"''', but in relation to [[Transformers]] toys it is usually used to mean "a feature added to a toy to enhance its play value or make it more attractive to buyers". They may also be called "action features". Common gimmicks found on Transformers are:

*Weapons, which may be static, deployable, or projectile-launching,
*Interaction with other Transformers,
*Electronic sounds or lights,
*Articulated limbs, and
*Transformation itself.

The term "gimmick" has a vaguely pejorative sense, and some Transformers fans profess a dislike for all gimmicks on Transformers. A look at the above list makes this seem strange; a truly gimmick-free Transformer toy would be no more than a static statue. Usually, however, the real if unspoken argument is that articulation and transformation are the preferred features, and others are unwanted because they tend to interfere with these favored two. This is most noticeable with recent lines, where a set uniform feature is given to all a given line's figures (such as [[Transformers: Armada|Armada's]] [[Minicon]]s or [[Transformers: Cybertron|Cybertron's]] [[Cyber Planet Key]]s), thus drawing more attention to it than the actual figure.

On the other hand, these fans may believe that attempts to add play value are bound to make Transformers into [[Playskool]] baby toys instead of the [[Kiss_Players|adult collectibles]] they should be. How silly that would be.

==Summary==
As another stasis pod crashes to Earth, Tarantulas sends out a magnetic pulse that disrupts the sensors at both the Predacon and Maximal bases. The pulse ensures that Tarantulas will be the first to arrive at the pod's landing site, and that he will be able to manipulate the protoform inside. Blackarachnia discovers what Tarantulas is up to and insists on accompanying him to the pod's landing site.

Tigatron also sees the pod coming to Earth, but is unable to contact the Maximal base so he sets out to intercept the pod on his own. He is intercepted by Waspinator who delays Tigatron until Airazor arrives and saves him. Tigatron tells Airazor to go to the pod and that he will join her there.

Arriving at the pod, Tarantulas and Blackarchnia are too late to hand pick an arachnid form for the protoform, however Tarantulas is able to do some reprogramming and turn the protoform into a Predacon. The new Predacon, Inferno, emerges from the pod only to attack the other two Predacons. Tarantulas deduces that Inferno's beast mode is dominating his logic circuits and that he thinks he really is a fire ant protecting his colony.

Airazor arrives on the scene only to be attacked and disabled by Inferno and Blackarachnia. Blackarachnia uses this opportunity to make nice with Inferno and start to win him over. Tarantulas uses this opportunity to accomplish his real goal, and steals the stasis pod. This act enrages Inferno who sets out in pursuit of Tarantulas, with Blackarachnia not far behind. Tigatron arives and tells Airazor to find Optimus while he pursues the Predacons.

Nearing his lab, Tarantulas is caught by Inferno who demands the return of the colony. Tarantulas ensnares Inferno in a web and is preparing to finish him off when Scorponok arrives and informs Tarantulas that Megatron wants the pod. Before that can happen however, Tigatron arrives and destroys the pod. His victory quickly turns sour as he is attacked by both Tarantulas and Blackarachnia, who inflict heavy damage on him. Megatron arrives on the scene shortly, and even though both of the spiders flee, Tigatron is still in trouble. Inferno breaks free of Tarantulas's web and is enraged at the destruction of the colony, he turns his fury on Tigatron and is preparing to destroy him, when Optimus and Airazor arrive and blow Inferno into scrap.

Megatron gathers up the parts of Inferno and has him restored, and Optimus and Airazor take Tigatron back to the Maximal base for repairs. Back at his lab, however, Tarantulas is lamenting the loss of the pod, revealing to an eavesdropping Blacharachnia his beliefs that the planet they're on is doomed. From this, the she-spider correctly surmises that Tarantulas was going to convert the pod into an escape shuttle, but is unable to wrench any more information about his motives for doing so out of him.
