The Apex Armor is one of the relics of Thirteen. Judging by the name, it's probably not the worst set of armor you could find.

Fiction
Exiles
The Apex Armor was created by Solus Prime. Long after, while waiting for the Autobots on Cybertron, Alpha Trion had a few daydreams about Optimus Prime returning with the relic, as well as the AllSpark and other lost and legendary treasures. Transformers: Exiles
Triangulation
The Apex Armor was hidden in the Artic, where a human research team found it and took it back to their base. Later it was discovered by Starscream, who took it for his own while Optimus Prime and Dreadwing were fighting each other over it. He pulled it from the ice it was encased in and identified it as armor of Decepticon design. When he placed the roughly disc shaped object to his chest it expanded over him into a full body armor that towered over both Optimus and Dreadwing. It proved to be a very powerful weapon, allowing him to survive two ambushes by Optimus Prime and Dreadwing. It was also impervious to Dreadwing's sword and energy blasts only served to stagger him. He also demonstrated the armor heightened the strength of the user but did not bestow flight or any other weapons. Triangulation
Notes
* In 1984, Cullen created the voice of Optimus Prime by emulating the mannerisms of his older brother Larry, who had served in the United States Marine Corps in the Vietnam War. Specifically, he based Prime's voice and mannerisms upon Larry's calm, controlled and authoritative approach to serious situations. The Transformers: Prime episode "Partners" was dedicated to his late brother's memory.

* Yes, Optimus Prime is his favorite voice acting role, although he also loves being Eeyore.

* At 2007, Peter Cullen said he'd love to own one of the three modified Peterbilt 379 trucks used in the filming of Transformers. Let's try and picture Optimus Prime driving himself for a moment. Has your brain exploded yet from the sheer awesomeness?

* The mid-range Voyager class Movie Optimus Prime toy (in its many releases) features a non-removable cowboy-hat-bedecked driver figurine that flips out of the seat when the driver's side door is closed. This appears to be based on Peter Cullen himself. Awesome.

* In Alliance issue 1, Optimus Prime creates a holo-driver for himself in the likeness of Cullen. Epps thought it was perfect. Odds are, so would most of the fandom.

* He was also the Toonami announcer (or as TOM called him: "The Big Guy") for many years, allowing him to narrate commercials for Armada, Energon and Cybertron. Later, he narrated commercials for Animated, even though it wasn't on Toonami. Because he's Optimus Prime, that's why.

* Peter was asked to reprise Optimus Prime in an episode of Robot Chicken, where the character would enact a dramatization that he's dying from prostate cancer. He turned down the offer as he took the role too seriously to make fun of it, which the Adult Swim people respected him for.

*Cullen also provided the voice of the Renegade GoBots Pincher, Spoiler, Tank and Block Head in the Challenge Of The GoBots animated series.

* In the 1976 remake of King Kong, he had an uncredited role voicing the great ape. Cullen injured his throat and coughed blood after a recording session that took five to six hours. We could throw in another joke about Trukk not munky on this subject, but really, that would be redundant at this point.

* Cullen's voice is unmodified and is entirely his own in his role as Prime's Optimus Prime.
Shockwave experimented on three specimens, optimizing them for battle in the gladiatorial arenas of Kaon by turning them into combiners- something that disgusted the gladiator Megatronus. They were primitive to the point of barely possessing a sentient consciousness, but surprisingly capable fighters. The way they moved together gave away their nature as combiners even when separate. Even with one of their number dead the remaining two could combine into a hovering attack mode.

The trio competed in the gladiatorial Tournament of Champions when they encountered Megatronus. He allowed them to scan a vehicle form before attacking. One emerged from a scrapheap as an all-terrain vehicle with magnetic studded tracks and sought a vantage point on the combat pit's wall, while another sprayed acid on Megatronus's shoulder. Megatronus caught the third Insecticon's multiple, vibrobladed hands and tore an arm off, flinging it into the audience and causing havoc.

Taking fire from the other two, Megatronus made the wounded Insecticon fire his own ion cannon into its neck, killing it in an attempt to ensure there would be no combination. He then slammed the acid-spitter to the floor, but it wriggled away and managed to combine with the ATV, wiring itself into girders while blasting and spitting acid at the gladiator. Megatronus transformed and blasted them, before pinning them down in robot mode and smashing them to pieces with two maces. Megatronus roared "I still function!", as the crowd began chanting a shortened version of his name: Megatron. Transformers: Exodus
The team is surprised to learn that Starscream wants to become an Autobot.

Synopsis
Aboard the Nemesis, Starscream confesses his sins before Soundwave and claims to have made peace with his position as second-in-command. He goes to the bridge where Airachnid is telling Megatron about one of his indiscretions, a failure to disclose the location of the crash site of the Harbinger, a Decepticon transport ship that crashed on Earth while containing an experimental weapon. Megatron orders him to lead Airachnid to the crash site to retrieve the weapon.

Arcee stands at Cliffjumper's graveside and talks to her old partner, promising to find the Decepticon responsible for his death.

Starscream and Airachnid reach the Harbinger crash site, but Airachnid is deliberately cagey about what the weapon is they're looking for. She's impressed by the fact that Starscream was the one who terminated Cliffjumper, but reveals she knows about the fact that Megatron was planning to terminate him at the energon mine. They burrow their way down to the buried wreck, and Airachnid accesses the ship computer to find the location of the cargo. Starscream warns that the signal might alert the Autobots.

Indeed, at that moment Ratchet alerts Optimus that the base sensors have detected an ancient Decepticon signal.

Airachnid finds that corridor to the weapon ends in a stone wall. The ship broke in half before crashing, and the weapon is in the other half of the ship. Starscream won't tell her where the other half is, so she binds him in a web, and threatens him until he blabs. She leaves him there with the suggestion that she might come back, but runs into the Autobots in a corridor. Forced to double back, she drills her way through the ground, and is followed by Arcee, much to Optimus's concern. On the surface, Airachnid swiftly gets the better of Arcee, but Prime's arrival forces Airachnid to retreat in 'copter mode. Optimus reminds Arcee that trying to seek revenge for Tailgate's death isn't a good idea. Bulkhead and Bumblebee resurface with Starscream as a captive, and they're all surprised when the Decepticon says he wants to switch sides. Optimus, Arcee, and Bulkhead have a brief discussion and decide to take Starscream along, for now.

Airachnid finds the other half of the Harbinger and pulls the experimental weapon, a staff, from its container.

The Autobots arrive at the stone arch. Optimus believes they should seriously consider letting Starscream join the team because allowing the Decepticons redemption will be important to establishing peace. He leaves Arcee guarding Starscream, and takes Bumblebee and Bulkhead to find the ship. As Prime's team approaches the Harbinger, Airachnid begins opening fire with the staff, a weapon named the Immobilizer, and freezes Bulkhead in place.

Starscream tries to convince Arcee that he's safe to let go, but inadvertently lets Arcee know that he was the one who killed Cliffjumper. He frantically attempts to convince her that is was a mercy killing, but Arcee doesn't buy it. She throws down the key to the cuffs so he can free himself and make it a fair fight, but he tricks her into getting close enough that he can wound her with his claws.

Optimus and Bumblebee take cover behind a rock, but Airachnid burrows underground, coming up behind them and zapping Prime. Bumblebee starts exchanging fire with the Decepticon.

As Arcee and Starscream fight, Starscream taunts her by asking if Tailgate was weak like Cliffjumper.

Airachnid gloats over her new trophies, but the dust kicked up by Airachnid's weapon strikes on a nearby rock gives Bumblebee an idea. He blasts the rock face some more, kicking up a thick cloud of dust. Airachnid sweeps the cloud with the Immobilizer, and when the cloud clears, Bumblebee stands motionless. While Airachnid goes back to talking to Prime, Bumblebee sneaks up behind her and sucker punches her. As the Immobilizer is thrown into the air, Bumblebee shoots it and it shatters. Airachnid flees under fire from Bumblebee.

Starscream gets the upper hand in his fight against Arcee, kicking her around brutally. As he moves in to finish her off, she reveals she's been playing possum, and delivers a series of blows that brings him down. Arcee has her blades at Starscream's throat, ready to kill him, when she realizes that they're being watched by Bumblebee. She lets Starscream limp away and collapses.

Back on the Nemesis, Megatron is very furious at Airachnid, not because she failed to retrieve the Immobilizer, but because she left Starscream in the hands of the Autobots, knowing of a possibility that that Autobots will gain Decepticon intelligence from Starscream. It is then Megatron swears to Airachnid that she will be punished for deserting his second-in-command, much to her dismay.

At the Autobot base, Ratchet has repaired the Immobilizer and used it to unfreeze Optimus and Bulkhead. Arcee has also been repaired, but blames herself for chasing away Starscream.

Elsewhere, Starscream bashes his clamp bonds against a rock wall, shattering them. He realizes that he is now an independent, beholden to no one and flies off to consider his next move.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
* When Airachnid freezes Prime, his battle mask is drawn back. Next scene, he has it out again.
* When begging for mercy as Arcee pins him to the ground, Starscream's eyes (save for the pupils) are completely red (well, actually, just a bit pinkish, even). It does make him look even more scared, though. Until his next scene, when they're still like that.
* When Starscream and Airachnid are arguing in the crashed ship a piece of Starscream's shoulder goes through his chest.

Continuity notes
*Airachnid rejoined the Decepticons after the events of "Metal Attraction". Good thing that magnetism wore off.
*Starscream recalls how he did away with Cliffjumper in "Darkness Rising, Part 1". And gloats about it too.
*Arcee confirms Megatron's attempt to kill Starscream from "Rock Bottom".
*Tailgate's death is brought up. His death was originally shown via flashback in "Predatory".
*Optimus has replaced the trailer blown up by MECH in "Convoy" with an identical looking one.
*This is the last appearance of Starscream for Season one.

Transformers references
*Starscream claims his previous rank used to be the "Air Commander" of energon Seekers. "Energon Seeker" is the Scientist chassis used by Starscream in the War for Cybertron game.
*The Immobilizer is a weapon previously used by Decepticons, as well as the name for the episode it is featured in. Sadly, unlike the original Immobilizer, it was not invented by Wheeljack.
*Bulkhead sarcastically refers to "lobbing with The Fallen". Lobbing was the game he played with Wheeljack during the latter's brief visit to Earth.
* This isn't the first time Starscream has wanted to be an Autobot.

Real-world references
*In another example of Starscream using human expressions, after listing his grievances with the Decepticons, he offers to "rat them out".
*"Be still, my beating spark" is a variation of the human phrase "Be still, my beating heart", which is most often recited after seeing one's romantic interest.
* Arcee giving Starscream a fighting chance to live by letting him use the key to his cuffs to free himself while she keeps her blasters aimed at him is reminiscent of the 1994 film Bad Girls.
Trivia
*This episode was dedicated to Captain H. L. "Larry" Cullen, Peter Cullen's older brother, who served as a United States Marine in Vietnam and was the primary inspiration for Optimus Prime's voice. He died aged 70 on March 25, 2011, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery on July 21, two days before the episode's broadcast.
*Bumblebee really needs to work on his aim if he can't hit Airachnid even when she's only a few feet from him.
*This is the first time in this series—and one of very few instances in the entire history of the franchise—when a character's thoughts are heard out-loud.
*This episode also deals with something that is often not addressed throughout the franchise: Starscream, for all his weaknesses and flaws throughout his various incarnations, is a very important part of the Decepticon war machine. Megatron is more furious at Starscream's (believed) capture than he is at the loss of a powerful weapon like the Immobilizer (which he dismisses as 'some trinket').
*Ratchet gains yet another Decepticon weapon to study in this episode. Maybe he'll bring one into battle sometime soon?
*This is Starscream's last appearance in season one.
Jack learns how to restore Optimus's memory.

Synopsis
On the Nemesis, Starscream points his missiles at Orion Pax. Accidentally addressing him as Optimus Prime, the Seeker realizes something is wrong. Through a brief conversation, Starscream learns of Orion's deception at Megatron's hands, and states that the archivist has much to learn. He begins to speak, but is interrupted by a team of apprehending Vehicons. Starscream leaps into action and makes a quick escape, and Pax is ordered to stay in his quarters, his curiosity spiked.

Back at base, Ratchet finishes adjustments on the GroundBridge's power level, hoping to increase its range. Raf pilots a test subject in the form of a toy car into the bridge, but upon reaching the end, it is destroyed. He consoles Ratchet on the failure, saying it was only the first try, but Ratchet thinks it was a doomed idea from the start. In an effort to cheer him up, Raf tells a story of his slow triumph over the rope climb in gym class, but it falls on oblivious ears, since Ratchet loudly asks what does attempting to increase the GroundBridge's power level have anything has to do with gym class.

In the halls of the Nemesis, Starscream deftly maneuvers his way past many guards, blasting a door out in his bid for freedom. Seconds away from escape, a laser blast catches his tail, and he spins to the ground. Orion is soon visited by Megatron, who apologizes for the commotion. Orion asks why Megatron told him Starscream was dead, and he replies that Starscream is dead to the Decepticon cause—a defector to the Autobots. Megatron departs, but Orion's interest is piqued by Starscream's reference to him, and he begins to read more about this "Optimus Prime." On his page, Orion reads that he was the leader of the Autobot faction, and not Ratchet, as Megatron told him.

Bulkhead arrives at base, and reports no leads on the location of the Decepticons' space bridge. About to send Bulkhead on his way to the next search quadrant, Ratchet recieves a high-frequency message of peculiar nature: it is addressed to him, and is from Starscream. The plane tells him that he must come alone with a medical kit to repair him, in exchange for valuable intel about Optimus.

In a forest, the GroundBridge portal opens, to the surprise and dismay of the wounded Starscream, for both Ratchet and Bulkhead step out. Ratchet plays no games with his help, refusing to repair him until he gets some information. Realizing his compromised position, Starscream tells all, but succumbs to horror when he finds the Autobots already know it as well. As Ratchet and Bulkhead depart, the medic responds to Starscream's pleading with the ultimatum that unless he knows anything about the space bridge, he's going to rot. The jet is amazed that his troops finished his project when he was gone, then realizes that this is the information Ratchet is looking for. He smugly shows the Autobot where it hurts.

The group convenes at base to discuss the plan of action in seizing the space bridge. June voices her concern at the prospect of Jack traveling to another planet, but is reassured by Arcee and Fowler, and realizes the necessity of his mission. Ratchet works out a plan, where all four Autobots storm the space bridge chamber, jamming communications to block the deployment of Decepticon reinforcements. Fowler offers Jack a spacesuit for use on Cybertron, and Arcee volunteers to go with him. The GroundBridge opens, and the team enters.

At the Space Bridge complex, the team makes quick work of the guards. One attempts to send a message to control, but is stymied by Ratchet's scrambler and Bulkhead's fist. They arrive at the bridge, and Jack, fully suited, is bridged to the location. The space bridge is activated, and the duo step through to Arcee's home planet and Jack's destiny.

In the complex, the remaining Autobots are stopped in their tracks by a transmission from Breakdown, asking for a status report. As he makes continual demands for a report, who should take the call is fumbled over, as Ratchet and Bulkhead's voices would be recognized, and Bumblebee can't speak at all. Ratchet settles on Agent Fowler, and he is patched through. He manages to field the call, and turns it around, asking Breakdown how he was, to surprising success.

Meanwhile, Orion searches through all files he can on "Optimus Prime", only to find that they have been encrypted, to his chagrin. However, Orion, a skillful hacker manages to get past them long enough to find an image that shocks him; he is Optimus Prime! This does not go unnoticed by Soundwave and Megatron. The latter vows that he will see to it that Orion completes Project Iacon, even if he has to inflict grievous pain on him.

On Cybertron, Jack and Arcee follow the Key's signal and are surprised to find that it leads to Kaon, the Decepticon capitol. As they advance on foot, they cross a bridge, unaware that underneath them, something is transforming and beginning to follow them...
* When Starscream escapes from the Nemesis, he is shot near his tailfin, which is located on his back in robot mode. When he appears later, he is nursing a leg wound below the knee, even though that should have required damage to his undercarriage in jet mode.
** The crash itself may have caused the damages to his leg.
*Despite Megatron's orders to wipe all sensitive files regarding Optimus Prime off their systems, at least one file remained, hidden behind a false image of the "Invader" Optimus Prime. However the file on Optimus Prime wasn't deleted, but instead encrypted. Maybe Soundwave got lazy or perhaps he is succumbing to jealousy of Orion taking his place as main hacker?
**This could be to throw off Orion should he search the name "Optimus Prime" due to the false picture, but then why not remove the encrypted file behind it?

However, Orion, a skillful hacker manages to get past them long enough to find an image that shocks him. He is Optimus Prime!

==Notes==
Animation and technical errors
Continuity errors
* When Starscream escapes from the Nemesis, he is shot near his tailfin, which is located on his back in robot mode. When he appears later, he is nursing a leg wound below the knee, even though that should have required damage to his undercarriage in jet mode.
** The crash itself may have caused the damages to his leg.
*Despite Megatron's orders to wipe all sensitive files regarding Optimus Prime off their systems, at least one file remained, hidden behind a false image of the "Invader" Optimus Prime. However the file on Optimus Prime wasn't deleted, but instead encrypted. Maybe Soundwave got lazy?
**This could be to throw off Orion should he search the name "Optimus Prime" due to the false picture, but then why not remove the encrypted file behind it.

Continuity notes
*Raf has undergone a rapid recovery; the braces on his legs from last episode are gone.
*Kaon, the Decepticon capital, makes its first actual appearance, following Megatron's dream recreation of it in "Sick Mind". Jack remembers it from the events of that episode after Arcee identifies it.

Transformers references
Real-world references
*The scene of Fowler talking to Breakdown is a reference to Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.
**Though it makes fictional sense, it is ironic that Kevin Micheal Richardson, who has played a Vehicon in the series, did not make the call.

Trivia
* Aww, Breakdown cares about the little guy.
* This is the second time Megatron denounces a mistake relating to Starscream that he "does not intend to make again".
* Miko wants to join a dangerous assault against a Decepticon stronghold. Apparently the lessons of her previous near-death experiences have been completely forgotten.

"Will do, control out."
:-Fowler learns that hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good "how are you" at your side.

Notes

Megatron manipulates the impaired Optimus into joining the Decepticons.

Synopsis
With the Autobots back at base after Unicron's defeat, Ratchet grimly outlines the situation and speculates that Optimus has reverted to Orion Pax, his pre-Prime self.

On the Nemesis, Megatron makes a ship-wide announcement that Orion Pax is to be treated as a guest. Airachnid doesn't think it's wise to let an Autobot on board, but Megatron isn't concerned and has his own plans for Orion. Elsewhere on the ship, Knock Out affixes a new Decepticon insignia to Orion's shoulder.

Fowler wonders why they can't just track down Optimus's signal, but Ratchet says it hasn't been on their sensors since they left the Earth's core. They must find some way to track down Optimus regardless, so they can somehow restore his memory. The best bet seems to be to use the Key to Vector Sigma, but the problem is, Vector Sigma's on Cybertron.

Megatron begins to fill Orion Pax in on what's been happening, spinning a yarn about how Orion has been a captive of the Autobots, who are led by the Warlord Ratchet. Orion is shocked at the images Megatron shows him of a war-ravaged Cybertron.

June announces that there's no way Jack is going to Cybertron, but Ratchet says only Jack can use the key to access Vector Sigma. The point's moot anyway, as they don't have any way to get to Cybertron. As Raf points out, the GroundBridge barely made orbit, though Miko wonders why Ratchet can't just "turbo-charge" it.

With Megatron finished "informing" Orion, the latter vows to help the Decepticons overcome Ratchet and the Autobots. Megatron has Soundwave remove any incriminating evidence from the ship's data core so Orion can be put to work furthering the Decepticon cause without any risk of him finding anything embarrassing.

Sierra turns up at KO Burger to visit Jack as he works at the drive through, confused that she never sees him outside school. Their discussion is interrupted by Arcee picking him up as his shift ends. Sierra jumps to the obvious conclusion after hearing the female voice, and seems unconvinced by Jack's claim that it's his mother. Arcee reports that they haven't detected Optimus yet.

Megatron discusses their new comrade with Knock Out, specifically his task to decrypt records stolen from the Iacon archives near the end of the War. Knock Out wonders if they shouldn't beef up the security, but Megatron feels that Orion would work better if he felt he was not under threaten. In any case, Orion's workstation has been located close to the energon storage, which is under heavy guard.

Back at base, Ratchet is "tinkering" with the GroundBridge.

Orion has managed to decode some of the data from archives, giving coordinates on Earth of stashed Cybertronian technology, possibly weapons. He is puzzled by the absence from the Nemesis of Starscream who is mentioned in the documents as being Megatron's second-in-command, but Megatron claims Starscream is dead. Megatron returns to the bridge, where he tells Soundwave he's concerned that Orion will soon learn the truth.

Fowler contacts the Autobots to let them know that the Decepticons are attacking one of the military bases they hit two months before. Bumblebee, Bulkhead and Arcee respond, finding Knock Out and Breakdown in the process of stealing a power source. As the pair GroundBridge out, Arcee races through after them and begins speeding through the Nemesis, bashing Vehicons and hunting for Optimus. Soundwave soon relays her presence to Megatron, and though Airachnid offers to deal with it, Megatron sends Soundwave to ensure the Autobot is escorted off the ship. Alerted by the fighting, Orion emerges from his quarters, but Soundwave manages to GroundBridge Arcee off the ship just before Orion can see her.

Deposited somewhere arctic, Arcee is soon back at base admitting she didn't succeed in determining the location of the ship or whether Optimus was even aboard. Fowler makes a brief call to yell at them for the human casualties at the base, and tensions among the Autobots soon spill over into arguing. Jack, however, believes they can commandeer the Decepticon space bridge once it's complete, and use it to reach Cybertron. The Autobots are doubtful, but determined to try and find the space bridge.

Meanwhile, Starscream sneaks back on board the Nemesis to steal a stack of energon cubes. Though he deals with the Vehicons guarding the energon storage, more are on their way, and he's forced to duck into a nearby room. His relief is momentary, as he finds himself face to face with Optimus Prime.
Quotes
"—and the first to address him as Optimus Prime will have their voice box torn out."
:—Megatron makes plain the penalty for failure.

"Your mom looks good in leather, on your bike..."
:—Sierra is unconvinced that the girl on the motorcycle is really Jack's mom

"One question, Megatron, why are we called 'Decepticons'?"<br>
"Another craven Autobot scare tactic. The name was meant to demonize us. Instead, we wear it as a badge of honor. For if speaking the truth is deception, then we are gladly guilty."
:—"Orion Pax" is (ironically) deceived by Megatron.

"Bulkhead—"<br>
"What? You needed that?!"
:—Ratchet is eternally frustrated, and Bulkhead should invest in a punching bag.

"Whoa, that's a pretty good idea!"<br>
"Oh, well if Miko thinks it's a good idea..."
:—Miko gets no respect from Arcee

Notes
Animation and technical errors
Continuity notes
* Fowler refers to the "microchip in his butt" that allows him the government to track him, which was previously used for that purpose by the Autobots in "Darkness Rising, Part 3".
*Starscream's absence is finally acknowledged by Megatron after his supposed capture in "Partners". He evidently realized that Starscream may have betrayed him again and ordered him to be detained if he returned.
*Megatron refers to Ratchet as the "Doctor of Doom", as the Autobot medic called himself in "Stronger, Faster".
*Raf is still wearing braces on his legs for the injuries he incurred in "One Shall Fall"

Transformers references
*In summarizing his version of history for Orion, Megatron uses the rather specific terminology of "exodus" and "war for Cybertron", pretty blatantly alluding to the novel and video game. In particular, the first name-drop is kinda forced, as the word isn't even used correctly: Megatron says they are "in exodus on another world", but he means "exile".
*Fowler calls Orion a "librarian" in disbelief that he has lost his memories: this was Megatron's favored insult for Optimus in Exodus.
*Megatron refers to the storming of the Hall of Records in the final days of the war for Cybertron; Exodus climaxed with the Decepticons storming Iacon, and, in Exiles, the building is occupied.
*Ratchet remarks that if the government shuts down Autobot Outpost Omega-1, then maybe they'll also fire the Autobots into space, or ship them off to some island.
*Arcee remarks that perhaps Optimus gave Jack the Key to Vector Sigma because he thought there was "more to Jack than meets the eye".

Real-world references
Trivia
*A 12-minute sneak preview of this episode was made available On Demand on February 10, 2012.
*Polygon resolved the issue of the seemingly empty Jasper with roving cars!
