The game is set during the waning days of the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] is searching for a dangerous power source known as [[Dark Energon]] to fuel his conquest of the planet. [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] assumes temporary command following an attack on [[Iacon]] that killed [[Zeta Prime]], but he is not yet leader of the Autobots. [[Starscream]] joins the Decepticons as second-in-command, but does not consider either Optimus or Megatron to have the planet's best interests at heart. * Campaigns will be co-op both online and off for the first time in a Transformers game.
* All playable characters have two special abilities, such as absorbing health from enemies or marking targets.
* The game will run on the Unreal engine.

As an early marketing campaign, the game's website included the feature "Operation Transmission Recovery": using transmission and coordinate dials, you could pick up "transmissions" from Cybertron (or "video clips" to you and me).

The art and design team did intense research (i.e. watched the original cartoon, looked at comics, and watched "typical sci-fi cool stuff" like ''Blade Runner'') to work out the aesthetic of Cybertron; lead artist [[Ivan Power]] remarked that the original cartoon was the main inspiration, and that Cybertron wasn't shown there so they had to rewatch the same few clips "over and over". ==Operation Transmission Recovery==

As an early marketing campaign, the game's website included the feature "Operation Transmission Recovery": using transmission and coordinate dials, you could pick up "transmissions" from Cybertron (or "video clips/images" to you and me).

There are two dials, blue (outer) and yellow (inner). Using your mouse, you can drag the dial to set coordinates. The blue dial is set by aligning it to marks on the outer circle. When aligned, it becomes a blue ring. After that, the yellow dial is set so that signal strength is full, as indicated by a meter on the right. Once a transmission is unlocked its symbol lights up and the "Total Recovered" amount increases a little bit. When you reach 100%, it tells you how many hours remain until next batch.

As of January 12, 2010, the following transmissions (Batch 9), almost all of which are part of second trailer (link below), were available:

: Released in March of 2009, ''[[Masterpiece]]'' Grimlock is based upon his original toy and cartoon model, transforming into an outdated view of the Tyrannosaurus rather than the more accurate depiction seen on ''Classics'' Grimlock. Of all the Masterpiece figures, Grimlock features both the least complex transformation, as well as the least deviation from his original toy's essential transformation scheme.

: ''Masterpiece'' Grimlock features the usage of [[die-cast]] metal for his dinosaur mode's toes and a LED mounted within his right fist which illuminates both his gun's barrels and his sword. As a result of said mechanism that only articulated part of his right hand is the thumb. Similarly his left hand is modeled much like [[Starscream (G1)/toys#Masterpiece|Masterpiece Starscream's]] hands with the thumb and index finger fully articulate with the remaining fingers joined together. Possibly as a show of good faith regarding the sacrificed articulation, [[TakaraTomy]] designed his alternate mode's arms to be highly poseable featuring full articulation of the claws with the arms themselves attatched to the body with ball joints.

: He features many gimmicks including the ability to change his eye color in either mode from red to blue with the flip of a switch found at the back of his head in robot mode, and by opening the top of his head in dino mode and switching the eyes around. This allows the owner the choice of representing the use of blue in the cartoon (and his IDW alternate mode) or the use of red in most other media including his original toy. His tail is connected to his head meaning that by wiggling and moving it, the head rotates at the basis of the neck. Pushing down on his torso in dinosaur mode, makes his legs move up higher into his torso and as a result his head will look up. His alt-mode's head also has a tiny sculpted flame thrower in its mouth, but for your safety, it does not actually breathe fire (boo). Besides his weapons, he also comes with a cloth apron and bow tie to go with a drinks serving tray he carried in "[[Madman's Paradise]]", as well as the device he used to transfer his super-intelligence into [[Computron (G1)|Computron]] in "[[Grimlock's New Brain]]".
