In 1984, Spike was a 14-year-old adolescent working with his father Sparkplug on an oil rig when the Decepticons attacked. After the Autobots rescued them, they volunteered to become their native guides to planet Earth.

Spike had many adventures with the Autobots, taking part in just about everything they did on Earth for at least the next few years. He became especially close friends with the little Autobot Bumblebee. In the course of these adventures he met Carly, an impetuous prodigy and MIT graduate. Despite being (much) smarter, older (she could drive), and hotter than him, Carly displayed a noticeable affection for the somewhat-dim Spike. They mated and produced offspring.

As an adult in the distant year 2005, Spike was stationed with Bumblebee on one of the Autobot's secret moonbases. He had a bit of a potty-mouth about being eaten by the monster-planet Unicron but was saved from its belly by his afforementioned offspring. Later, when the Autobots had regained control of the planet, he became Earth's ambassador or something. Marooned on the distant planet Nebulos he became a Headmaster partner to Cerebros and single handedly rebuilt an ancient city into a giant transformer.

He polished up good.

Headmasters Cartoon
Uh, disregard those last two sentences and add in some misogyny.
Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

Spike Witwicky was away at college for the first few years of the Autobot/Decepticon war on Earth until he returned home to find his younger brother Buster kidnapped by the Decepticons. Spike soon became the binary-bond partner to the Headmaster Fortress Maximus, after Fortress Maximus' first partner, Galen, was killed in a battle with the Deception Scorponok.

Thereafter he struggled with balancing his responsibillities to his family with those to the Autobots. Once Buster was rescued, and with Optimus Prime returned to life to take his place as Autobot leader, Spike went into retirement, mothballing poor Max. This retirement wouldn't last however as it was interupted, first by a pair of Deceptioon Pretenders, then by the crash of the Ark and a raving Galvatron. Through the course of these conflicts Spike learned that the binary bonding he had undergone with Maximus was far deeper and more permanent than he'd believed. Fortress Maximus was always there with him in his head, always a part of him. After his battle with Galvatron he seemed to have made peace with his connection to Fortress Maximus and his role as (perhaps) the last Autobot protector of Earth.

In an alternate timeline in the year 2009, Decepticons had built a machine to destroy Earth while a space-time anomaly was eating entire planets. After Rodimus Prime orchestrated a plan to travel twenty years back in time to the source of the anomaly, Spike Witwicky and his son Daniel accused Rodimus of shirking his responsibilities towards Earth and guilted Rodimus into allotting more troops to help destroy the Decepticons' machine.

In another alternate timeline in the year 2009, Spike Witwicky was part of a very small Autobot/human resistance movement in a world where Galvatron II's Decepticons controlled North America. The handful of Autobots who remained alive despaired and were on the cusp of giving up, but Spike and Lisa (who shared growing feelings for each other) guilted them into one last suicidal attack on Decepticon headquarters in New York before the rest of the world could unleash a nuclear holocaust onto America at midnight. Though there were several casualties, Spike managed to hoist an American flag on the Decepticon stronghold on live television, a symbolic measure which prompted the end of the planned nuclear strike. Before Galvatron II could respond, the Decepticon despot was abducted by Hook, Line, and Sinker into another timeline.

Generation 2
Spike followed up on the now Megatron-controlled Ark, which he'd apparently stuffed Fortress Maximus aboard and then abandoned after his battle with Galvatron (great job protecting Earth there, "Last Autobot").

He reunited with Max and together they... um sort of stopped Megatron (well, delayed him a little... maybe) by throwing themselves into the ship's antimatter core.

He blowed up real good.

Dreamwave comics continuity
It's to be assumed that Spike and his father, Sparkplug, met the Autobots early on in their time on Earth (in a similar fashion as Spike and Sparkplug did in the cartoon, or Buster and Sparkplug did in the Marvel Comics). Spike definitely had a younger brother named Buster (like in the Marvel comics), yet it was Spike who formed a close friendship with Bumblebee (like in the cartoon, rather than missing out on the first few years of the Witwicky family's interaction with the Transformers while engaging in drinking orgies at college, like he did in the Marvel comics). The exact details of the Witwicky's early years as the Autobots' human associates are therefore not known.

Somewhere in the time after 1984, Spike married Carly, who then gave birth to Spike's son, Daniel. After the explosion of the Ark II in 1999, which caused the death of Spike's father Sparkplug, Spike tried to leave his involvement with the Transformers behind and settled down with his wife and son in Cleveland, Ohio, trying to live a new life as a normal family. The newfound peace wouldn't last for long, though, as Spike was soon recruited by a shady military official named General Hallo seeking his help in reviving Optimus Prime, whose body his men had recently found in the Arctic. Spike, who had been entrusted by Prime with a fragment of the Matrix, used that fragment to bring Prime back to life. Prime Directive, Part 1 Prime Directive, Part 2

Prime subsequently used the Matrix to revive and assemble a group of his Autobots, which he would then lead against Megatron's Decepticons. Meanwhile, Spike was imprisoned by General Hallo, who had double motives behind reviving the Autobots and even tried to kill them by bombing them. With the help of Larry, the World's Most Resourceful Janitor, Spike was able to escape his cell and uncover Hallo's sinister schemes, but not in time to stop him from launching a nuclear strike against the Autobots which was ultimately averted when Superion sacrificed his life in order to make it detonate before it could reach its target. Prime Directive, Part 5 Prime Directive, Part 6

Following these events, Spike once again returned to his family and tried to leave his past with the Transformers behind. A few months later, though, his old friend Bumblebee, who had just decided to quit the Autobot army following a fierce battle against Sunstorm, showed up by his house. Spike, frustrated that the Autobots refused to leave him alone, hurled a few nasty insults against his old buddy before changing his mind and joining him on a men's night out in the city. The follow-up scene of Carly shouting at Spike singing drinking songs with Bumblebee was never published due to the untimely faltering of Dreamwave.

Devil's Due G.I. Joe vs the Transformers continuity
In response to the forming of the terrorist organization Cobra and its commandeered Transformers, the United States government assembled a strike team dubbed G.I. Joe. Spike Witwicky (codename Spike) was listed on the roster, but was never seen. G.I. Joe vs the Transformers, Part 2

(Oddly, Spike Witwicky's was the only name of a military specialist on the roster which was not ordered last name, first name.)

Trivia
*Spike and Buster were both derived from the same "young male human friend" character in early backstory material. For more on the name variation see Butch Witwicky.

Toys
Generation 1
* Fortress Maximus with Spike (Headmaster, 1987)
:Spike was a Headmaster figure who came with Fortress Maximus. Gray and blue, he transformed into Cerebros' head, who then in turn became Fortress Maximus' head. Although the tech specs referred to 'the Nebulan leader, Spike', most assume it was supposed to represent the character from TV, making this the first Transformers toy of an Earth human.

Heroes of Cybertron
*Autobot Espionage Team
:PVC figures of Spike and Bumblebee came sold together as "Autobot Espionage Team." (At this point, Hasbro did not have the trademark rights to Bumblebee's name.) The two came packaged with HOC Fortress Maximus' right leg.
Twirl is the youngest and least serious member of the Sonic Assault Team. To many, she is a flighty, featherbrained ditz who is more interested in dancing and interior design than anything else. They are so right. To those who can understand Mini-Con speak, she has a chirpy, airheaded manner.

Despite this, she is a valued member of the Team, even though Falcia constantly cuts her down verbally. Twirl takes it all in stride, as she knows deep down Falcia cares about her. She's also formed a bond with the Autobot Ravenus. Her weapon mode is incredibly powerful; it's possible the main reason she's on the team is simply so she doesn't fall into Decepticon hands.

Falcia is not Twirl's mother, no matter what Twirl thinks. Both Falcia and Redline flatly and vehemently deny any claim of parentage. Falcia gets rather violent at the suggestion.
Fiction
Micron Legends: Linkage Mini-Comics
Twirl's Mini-Con storage panel was one of several held within Redline's internal compartment for safekeeping when the Exodus went down. When Falcia reactivated on Earth and found Servo, she followed him to the Super Stunt Team's new base and forcibly removed Twirl's panel from Redline. When she left to rejoin her teammate Combusta, she was attacked by the Speed Chaser Team in Magnawing mode, and Twirl's panel was damaged.

Twirl would have died there, but the Mini-Cons developed a plan to save her. They quickly put together a machine that would take energy from the spark frames of Redline and Falcia to create a new body for Twirl while the two sent their consciousnesses into the Linkage to retrieve Twirl's mind before it could diffuse and be lost forever. The plan was a success, and Twirl returned to full functionality.

She and Falcia accompanied Servo to the Autobots' base hidden in the mountains near the Cosmo Scope Research Center in Colorado, so he could tell the Mini-Cons who were under Autobot protection of their plans. Falcia threatened to flatten her after she made another remark about "family" when Falcia decided to stick with Redline for the time being rather than join the Autobots, as was her original plan.

Twirl and the other Mini-Cons set up machinery on one of the Hawaiian islands so Redline and Falcia could retrieve the Master Key and upgrade all Mini-Cons, freeing them from their servility programs and power-locks. The Speed Chaser team and Aqua Raider Team attacked to stop them, bringing with them the mutated Bulk Ravenus. Twirl was incapable of resisting Ravenus' enhanced Powerlinx command and linked with the monster against her will. During the link, she discovered Ravenus' true nature as an Autobot and begged the other Mini-Cons to spare his life after she was released from him by Kingbolt.

After undergoing the Master Key upgrade herself, Twirl went to Cybertron with all of the other Mini-Cons to fight their creator, Unicron. In particular, she fought alongside Ravenus, who joined the fight wanting to make up for the wrong he did in his addicted, mutated form. One year after the battle, she returned to Earth and helped form an independent Mini-Con city.
*Twirl (Mini-Con, 2003)
: Twirl's toy is a redeco of the Air Military Mini-Con Team member Thunderwing, transforming into a stealth bomber, with a third, spinning-blade weapon mode. She was available only with the seventh volume of Micron Legend (the Japanese name for the Armada series) on DVD in Japan.

The space bridge appears in several Transformer continuities. The exact properties of the space bridge vary, but typically they serve as a more convienient means moving Transformers from one planet to another than the traditional means of space travel.

Space bridges are nonetheless distinct from Transwarp in that their primary function is movement through space, not time, though the time taken to traverse a space bridge seems to depend on the technology used.

Generation 1 Cartoon
The Space Bridge was apparently first conceived by Shockwave in 1984, as a means of transport back to Cybertron for the Decepticons stranded on Earth, and to allow them to ferry energon cubes to revitalize the planet. Capable of virtually instantaneous transport to other galaxies, the mechanics of the Space Bridge are not particularly clear, but appear to either involve some form of interdimensional displacement, or matter-energy transformation.

The Cybertronic end of the Space Bridge is a fixture in Shockwave's command centre, where it takes the form of a cylindrical tube resembling an Earthen elevator, the top of which projects outside of the centre's dome; it is through this open end that transportees enter or depart. The Earth-based end of the Space Bridge is decidedly more flexible - the Decepticons frequently constructed new Space Bridges in various locations, normally in the form of a large metal rings. Early Earth-built Space Bridge access points proved somewhat unstable, and in order to shuttle energon cubes, transportees were required to ferry them over the bridge a small vehicle, which rolled into the ring on a train-like track, and then had to be piloted along a "beam of light" with particular concentration. Some Decepticons displayed pronounced horror at being chosen for this unenviable task, and in the very first practice run of the mechanism, the villains opted to use the captive Sparkplug Witwicky, rather than risk any of their number. Megatron, however, soon proved able to traverse the bridge without a craft, and the technology was apparently refined so that transportees and energon cubes merely had to enter the ring on their own to make the journey.

The Space Bridge technology was taken to its ultimately extent when the Decepticons constructed three colossal pylons that would generate a "space pyramid," the apex of which extended to Cybertron's location in another galaxy. Using this, Cybertron was transported into Earth's orbit for a brief period, but was later blasted off into space to save the planet. Cybertron remained in the Milky Way galaxy, however - perhaps the reduced distance between it and Earth could account for the increased safety of Space Bridge transit. The process could, however, still go wrong, as it did when the Decepticons attempted to convert a baseball field into a new Space Bridge site, and a malfunction blasted a small group of Transformers to an alien world of giants. The Space Bridge was also used for planetary transportation once more when the Combaticon Onslaught wired his missile guidance systems into it and used it's powers to redirect the orbit of Earth, intended to send it spiralling into the sun, only to be stopped by an Autobot-Decepticon team-up.

Headmasters
Although the Space Bridge fell into disuse when the Autobots relcaimed Cybertron in 2005, rather than dismantle it since Vector Sigma maintained an Autobot power balance on the planet, thereby rendering the Decepticons unable to use it - it is apparent that they studied and duplicated the technology, installing their own Space Bridge network that allowed for easy transport between Cybertron, Earth and the planet Athenia, with fixed Space Bridge receptors in each base (the transport beam was, of course, now the traditional Autobot orange, as opposed to the Decepticons' iconic purple). Their failure to destroy the Decepticon Space Bridge, however, came back to bite them when the release of the Matrix's energy to cure the Hate Plague caused Vector Sigma to destabilise in 2011, allowing the Decepticons to use the Space Bridge to invade Cybertron.

When Mars was destroyed by Scorponok, the gravimetric balance of the solar system was disrupted, making Space Bridge travel to Earth unstable. This soon ceased to be an issue, however, when the Decepticons headed off on an interplanetary energy raid, and, in order to slow the Autobots down, Sixshot destroyed the Earth-based Space Bridge, causing a chain reaction that detonated the entire network.

(Note: The destruction of the Space Bridge left the only means to travel to Earth as the Trainbots and Battleship Maximus. After the Headmasters series, this reduced ability to travel to Earth is one of the reasons for the heavy human involvement in the following series, Masterforce, since Transformers are mostly unable to join the battle on Earth themselves.

Marvel Comics
(Note: Events from the UK-only comic stories are in italics.)

The space bridge was built by Lord Straxus' Cybertronic Decepticons, in response to the discovery that Megatron's lost group of Decepticons was alive and had set up operations on Earth. The bridge, which resembles a normal Earthen suspension bridge when not in use, has two halves; one which which remains stationary on Cybertron, and another which teleports to Earth. Passing through the bridge's central arch transports objects across vast distances, instantly and painlessly. Although a properly functioning space Bridge is a far more pleasant mode of transportation than the more fuel-efficient Autobot version, the Trans-Time Dimensional Portal, an improperly calibrated space bridge will annihilate any object or being who attempts to pass through its arch. Lord Straxus illustrated this fact when Blaster sent him over the edge during transit.

The original space bridge was built from the vast body of Spanner, a neutral scientist who had been captured by Straxus's forces and forced to design the Bridge. After the space bridge was almost completely destroyed, a new Bridge was built to replace it.

Robots in Disguise
Dreamwave Generation 1 Comics
Unicron Trilogy
Space bridges are the main mode of traveling in the Unicron Trilogy. Unlike their Generation 1 counterparts, they do not appear to need use of a fixed device at both ends.

They appear to change in variation from series to series, although this is likely simply due to art direction. In Armada, the Transformers are 'stretched' into warp gates, while in Energon and Cybertron, space bridges tend to appear as large holes in the sky that may or may not have a clear ramp leading into it.
