:Roller is a component of Autobot leader Optimus Prime from the Generation 1 continuity family.

In robot mode, Optimus Prime splits into three components:

*A sentient robot module, the Brain Center
*A wheeled drone module known as Roller.
*A Combat Deck.

Although Optimus Prime can function as three independent modules, injury to any one module is felt by the other two.

Roller is a small, cart-shaped device that Optimus Prime uses to slip unobtrusively behind enemy lines. He can maintain radio control over Roller at distances up to 1200 miles. Having Roller present somewhere is like being there himself.

Roller is a droid, able to function autonomously without Optimus's active oversight. But without Optimus, by far the most important of the three modules, Roller would not survive. Optimus shows great attachment and concern for Roller, who is left particularly vulnerable by the behind-the-scenes situations in which it specializes.
When Bumblebee and Sparkplug Witwicky were caught by Decepticons, and with the clock ticking on the bomb they planted, Optimus Prime sent Roller into the mine. When the bomb exploded, Optimus was nearly destroyed, More than Meets the Eye, Part 2 but Roller emerged cheekily unscathed, prompting Jazz to observe "Roller's one tough little Autobot!" More than Meets the Eye, Part 3

Another of Megatron's schemes involved sabotaging the Autobots' recharging chamber with a personality destabilizer device, turning a good number of them, including Optimus Prime, "evil". When the unaffected Autobots attempted to restore Prime back to normal, he split into his three components. Both Roller and the Combat Deck attempted to take the Autobots out, but Hound was able to nail them both with attitude exchangers. However, that left then with only one more exchanger. Not wanting to chance a miss, Bumblebee risked his life to attach it to Prime personally. Luckily, he was successful. Attack of the Autobots

The Autobots were stuck in automotive mode by the evil Transfixatron. With Ironhide in the claws of Megatron's car-crushing machine, only Roller could save the day! Roller led the Decepticons on a merry chase, allowing Optimus to rescue Ironhide from the jaws of undignified death! The Autobot Run

Japanese cartoon continuity
e-Hobby toy bio
Several million years ago on Cybertron, when Optimus Prime was a mere transport and delivery worker known as Orion Pax, Roller was an industrial droid known as Barrelroller. He transformed into an electromagnetic lift handle that helped Orion in his warehouse work moving heavy cargo. When Orion was fatally wounded by Megatron and rebuilt by Alpha Trion as Optimus Prime, Barrelroller was rebuilt into the Roller we all know and love.

Return of Convoy
When Optimus Prime was restored to life as Star Convoy, he was equipped with an upgraded version of Roller known as the Tread Unit.
Spike's subsequent sabotage of the solar station and ensuing detonation of the energon cubes in it could be construed (in some small way) to save the day as well.
: Roller was included with the original Optimus Prime toy (as well as its many rereleases). Roller is a small, six-wheeled vehicle that is stored in the trailer portion. The seats are scaled to allow Roller to carry Diaclone figures, due to its use in the prior toyline. The trailer/Combat Deck features a spring-loaded device that is capable of launching Roller out of the combat deck. Roller has a hole on top to hold the included oil pump or Optimus's gun. As a result of the original Optimus Prime's production variants (prior to rerelease), Roller was molded in silver plastic (the trailer's exterior color) as well as various shades of blue, indigo and purple (mold colors of the corresponding Optimus's fists/legs/Combat Deck unit).
: As an homage to the silver Roller pictured in the G1 cartoon, some 2000s re-issues of Optimus Prime/Convoy have included Roller molded in that Prime's blue color, only painted silver. (Only the New Year Special and 25th Anniversary Rollers have been left blue, and unpainted.)
Notes
*Prime's original character description, as seen in the Transformers Universe profile comic, named the robot module "Optimus" and the drone module "Prime", noting that the Prime module is also known as Roller. However, in practice, these names were never used. The robot module was always treated as if named "Optimus Prime", with "Prime" even being his most common nickname.
*A reference to this "Prime module" was retained in Universes Powermaster Optimus Prime profile, so the little guy must still be around, despite not being included with the Powermaster toy.
*Early concept drawings for Powermaster Prime, as seen in Transformers Generations, made him a Headmaster/Powermaster, with a four-wheeled Roller forming the head.
*When the Powermaster Optimus Prime toy was re-released as part of the Commemorative Series in 2003, it included the "Apex Bomber", a rechristened Godbomber. In the on-package bio, Apex Bomber was described as a "roller drone" under Prime's control.
*Roller was renamed "Scout Car" in a profile in issue #1 of the UK Generation 2 comic.
*Roller was supposed to have a minor role in Ginrai's Binaltech toy bio (written by Hirofumi Ichikawa), but the toy was ultimately used as Optimus Prime and so the bio went unused. In this storyline, a new Dodge Ram Binaltech body was built for Roller, but was instead possessed by Ginrai as he travelled through time to save his own future.
*The so-called "Complete Edition" of the first Masterpiece Convoy toy did not come with Roller (the indignity!), and it would be around half a decade before a newer, more complete version of the Convoy toy was released that included Roller.
Sideswipe is true to his function of Warrior. Though proficient with guns, he prefers melee combat to ranged weapons, and will employ any maneuver it takes to get close enough to the enemy to use his arm-mounted Cybertanium swords. His agile, wheel-legged form more than allows for this. His tactics are merciless and he's utterly unapologetic about this—war, after all, is messy.
After Optimus Prime's Autobots left Mission City, they left a homing beacon in a junk yard near the metropolis to attract any Autobots who might have heard Prime's rallying call to Earth. Alliance issue 3 Sideswipe was among those few that answered the beacon and arrived on the planet on the Wreckers ship, the Xantium. Showing little regard for humans in pursuing his quarry, Sideswipe's actions prompted Ironhide to arrive on the scene to rein him in. The younger Autobot was openly insubordinate towards Ironhide, warning him not to get in the way. Ultimately all the old veteran could do was to serve as damage control during Sideswipe's singleminded pursuit. Ultimately more reinforcements from NEST arrived, and Demolishor fled the scene. In the aftermath, Sideswipe saw the fear and mistrust the humans regarded him with because of his violent actions.
Unlike most Autobots, Sideswipe—part of a younger generation built during wartime—was made to fight. He was born during the war and with full knowledge of the Cybertronian battlefield, designed solely for killing. He's master of the quick-change transformation! Transformers Comic issue 2.2

Sideswipe served as a combat instructor at NEST's Scottish base, and had to put Skids and Mudflap back through basic training—something he was fed up of. As far as he was concerned, they should've been put on charge for causing Grindor to escape and he should have better things to do. He dealt with this by putting the twins through simulated combat after simulated combat, finally cracking it up to maximum setting, before someone knocked him out.

When he came to, the twins were babbling about how a mysterious and long-vanished Decepticon working for another mysterious Decepticon had done it and tried to kill them! Sideswipe was having none of it, viewing this as implausible and believing the twins knocked him out in revenge for training and were covering themselves. Between this and Grindor, he was becoming suspicious of them... Transformers Comic issue 2.4

Following the training, poor Sideswipe took them to Diego Garcia and continued to be pestered by them for a meeting with Prime. Not trusting them and ignoring their babble about some "dude", he tried to discourage them, only for the two to sneak off behind his back. Sighing, he went in pursuit... and saw them distract Prime before a Decepticon attacked, Skids tripped over Prime before he could take charge, and Mudflap handed a weapon to an escaping prisoner! When Optimus remarked that someone must've compromised security, Sideswipe fingered the twins: their actions clearly showed they were turncoats! Transformers Comic issue 2.5

Sideswipe would be part of the team tracking down the twins Transformers Comic issue 2.5, and would later be surprised when they were tracked down to North Carolina... and were fighting two Decepticons?
After the Autobots tracked the twins to the Decepticon's base, it became clear they weren't traitors after all and had been framed. Hell no, he instead had a scary amount of fun slaughtering drones and had to be told off by Ironhide for excessive bloodlust. Transformers Comic issue 2.8
Sideswipe was one of the Autobots sent to Shanghai when Decepticon energy signatures were detected, but he was initially held in reserve. As Sideways managed to flee from Arcee and the Twins in vehicle mode, Major Lennox ordered Sideswipe deployed. Sideswipe immediately sped in and quickly changed to robot mode. Catching up with Sideways by dexterously skating on his wheel-feet, Sideswipe somersaulted over the Decepticon, threw his right blade in the Decepticon's hood, and then dragged the blade in the opposite direction, tearing Sideways apart. Sideswipe took a moment to reflect on the success of his kill.

Afterwards, he returned with the other Autobots to NEST's base in Diego Garcia, where he witnessed Director Theodore Galloway air the President's concerns over the recent spate of Decepticon activity, and how the Autobots remaining on Earth might be the cause of it.
After the AllSpark shard was stolen by Ravage from NEST's secured bunker and Decepticons were detected heading towards Sam Witwicky at Princeton University, Sideswipe and the other Autobots were deployed to intercept, but arrived too late: Optimus Prime had died protecting the human boy from the resurrected Megatron, Starscream and Grindor. The Autobots and NEST arrived at a United States air base to discover that they were no longer welcome, following renewed Decepticon aggression after Prime's death, and that they were ordered to return to Diego Garcia. Sideswipe, who had been covered in a cargo net while being transported in vehicle mode, relished the chance to cut through his bonds when deployed from the air. Tracking Megatron to a disused factory with Optimus, Sideswipe complained about the dust until Optimus told him to be quiet. Optimus's scans turned up nothing, but Megatron soon revealed himself, batting Sideswipe aside. The young Autobot quickly recovered and joined Megatron in sword combat, even stabbing the Decepticon leader in the foot mid-sentence. Megatron subsequently brought the roof down on the two Autobots and escaped, though neither Autobot was harmed. Cyber Missions 4
Later, Sideswipe was pursuing Barricade and Frenzy in Scramble City, and took a turn to let the Decepticons think they had lost him, in truth following them to the facility they were heading for. After crumpling Frenzy into a ball and batting him back at Barricade, Sideswipe engaged the larger Decepticon, but was stopped with fire suppression equipment that froze him to the databanks. As the Decepticons were able to escape, Sideswipe broke free and learned that they had stolen NEST's defense deactivation codes. Cyber Missions 6

Soon after, he was able to discover a wounded Ratchet back in Mission City and took him back to Diego Garcia to be repaired. While Ratchet was getting fixed up, Sideswipe traded in his shattered blades for new blasters. While they did that, Lockdown arrived and threatened Sideswipe during target practice. Apparently, he had enough- he was able to shoot the EMP blaster off of Lockdown's wrist and back to Ratchet, who was fully operational. Lockdown, now without a blaster weapon, pushed Sideswipe aside and fled, much to Sideswipe's dismay, but Ratchet assured him that he was headed straight for the medical bay. There, he saw an out-cold Lockdown laying on an operating table, all the while stating he couldn't look. Cyber Missions 7

Sideswipe and Ratchet were transporting some energon to a secure location when they were attacked by Starscream and Mindwipe. Mindwipe assaulted them with his hypnotic powers, but at Ratchet's suggestion, Sideswipe used his satellite radio to play some loud music, breaking Mindwipe's concentration. The Autobot turned on Starscream, yelling at Ratchet to secure the energon, but as Ratchet pointed out, Starscream was a bit more formidable than Sideswipe had counted on. As Starscream was on the verge of dismantling Sideswipe, Ratchet threw the energon trailer from the nearest cliff, and Starscream broke off his attack. In the aftermath, Ratchet and Sideswipe went to find somewhere safe to hide from the enraged Decepticon. Cyber Missions 10
Optimus later requested backup to help fight Megatron and Starscream in the Arctic Circle. Sideswipe, Ratchet, Ironhide, and Bumblebee arrived to help their leader, and all four fought Starscream. Optimus later laid a trap for a final confrontation against Megatron, and had a hologram of the imprisoned Soundwave as bait. Sideswipe calmly taunted the Decepticon leader as he swiped at the illusion, but Sideswipe did not take part in the ensuing battle.
He was ready to finish off the apparently-surrendering Dirt Boss as well, but the surrender was just a ruse to allow Soundwave time to attack, and Sideswipe was caught in the explosion. With little Decepticon activity on Earth since the defeat of The Fallen, the Autobots now assisted their allies in dealing with human problems around the globe. Sideswipe accompanied Bumblebee, Dino, and Que on a mission to an illegal nuclear power plant in the Middle East. Upon returning to base, he was called in for a weapons inspection and watched as Optimus explained the importance of going to the long-lost Autobot ship, the Ark on Earth's moon. Later, after the former Autobot leader Sentinel Prime was retrieved from the moon and reactivated, Sideswipe observed his explanation of how his pillars were key to controlling the Space Bridge, a teleportation device Sentinel had designed that was crucial to the Autobot war effort.

Sideswipe and Dino joined Bumblebee, Sam Witwicky, Seymour Simmons and Dutch in following up on a lead to explain why humans were being killed by Decepticons. After the humans determined that the Decepticons were targeting Sentinel for his ability to control the Space Bridge, Sideswipe helped to escort the ancient Autobot back to base. Along the way Sideswipe helped fend off the Dreads coming to capture Sentinel on a highway in Washington, D.C., using his Stealth Force mode to help in bringing down Hatchet. Nearing the NEST facility, Sideswipe and Ironhide subsequently confronted the remaining Dreads, Crankcase and Crowbar, forcing the Decepticons to drop their weapons after a "Mexican standoff". However, the two Decepticons attacked the Autobots with hidden spear bombs, injuring Ironhide in the process. Sideswipe managed to avoid damage by cutting the spear bomb thrown at him in half with a back flip, using the movement to kick one of his blaster to Ironhide. The veteran Autobot then used the gun to kill Crowbar. Sideswipe was knocked down by Crankcase, who in turn was taken down by Ironhide with a spear to the face.

Sideswipe and the other Autobots were forced to leave Earth when the turncoat Sentinel Prime coerced the human governments to exile their protectors. As it was leaving Earth's atmosphere, the Autobot's ship, the Xantium, was destroyed by Starscream, and Sideswipe was presumably killed along with his fellow Autobots. However, knowing that Sentinel and the Decepticons wouldn't honor their promise that humanity would not be harmed, the Autobots hid themselves into the boosters of their ship, and safely splashed down to Earth before the ship was destroyed. Sideswipe and the Autobots rejoined their human allies from NEST and Sam Witwicky on the outskirts of Decepticon-controlled Chicago, now the center stage for Sentinel Prime and Megatron's plan to bring Cybertron to Earth.

Sideswipe helped plan the Autobots' assault against the Decepticons, ordering Ratchet to cover high and for Que to roll out already. Soon, five Autobots were captured by Decepticons commanded by Soundwave and Barricade. As Sideswipe struggled against his captors, the human traitor Dylan Gould convinced Soundwave to execute the Autobots, starting with Que. Sideswipe and the others would have suffered the same fate as the Autobot scientist if not for the timely intervention of Wheelie and Brains, whose commandeered Decepticon mothership rained down fighters on Soundwave's forces, allowing the Autobots to turn the tables and destroy their captors. Freed, Sideswipe led his comrades as they took the fight to the Decepticons and helped Optimus Prime against the traitorous Sentinel Prime. Eventually, the control pillar activating the space bridge was destroyed and, in the ensuing chaos, the Decepticon forces in the sky were dragged into the abyss created by Cybertron's destruction. Now, with Earth truly their home, Sideswipe stood triumphantly with his battle-worn comrades at the battle's end. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)
That the set uses a pair of Legends-class cars and a Deluxe-class jet means the toys are in a roughly-correct scale to each other... which is borked by the story, in which Fearswoop is supposedly much huger than normal thanks to some unnamed mystic artifact.

:Sideswipe transforms into a silver Corvette Stingray concept car. In this mode, he sits so low that it's difficult to roll him without scraping his undercarriage, unless you perform some careful shaping after transforming him. Sideswipe's Mech Alive gimmick is in his knees—bending his legs causes the blue armor plates on his knees to extend. He does have wheels in his feet like his character model, but the toy's feet have been designed in such a way that it can stand alone. Rounding out his robot-mode awesomeness, his hips have an "invisible joint" and moving pistons, while his "blades" are geared to spin out in unison. He is totally awesome.

:Sideswipe's instructions aren't clear as to how his torso is supposed to connect with his chest in robot mode. The torso piece has a square peg on top of it and there is a corresponding square hole between the two screws holding the front of his chest together. Getting his torso section in front of his arm struts can be a somewhat snug fit.

:This mold was retooled into Revenge of the Fallen Swerve.

:During part of 2010, Hasbro did a promotion wherein US fans could receive three free Deluxes in exchange for receipts showing the purchase of $25 or more of select Transformers product. ====Human Alliance====

*Sideswipe / Tech. Sergeant Epps (Human Alliance, 2009)
**Japanese ID number: RA-22
**Accessories: Missile

:Like all Human Alliance figures, Sideswipe is designed to allow his accompanying human figure, in this case Robert Epps, to ride inside.

:While in many ways simply a larger version of the Deluxe toy, it has several changes. The wheeled feet may now fold out into a stand system, allowing Sideswipe to stand without having to balance on the wheels, or be left as is to retain a more rounded look, and his blades are now rubberized to prevent injury and damage, as the blades lay flat underneath in vehicle mode. The sword-hands can also be slotted into a gear system connected to the front wheels, which causes them to spin as the wheels are turned. The passenger's seat may either be used as a seat for Epps, or turned into a missile launcher slung over Sideswipe's left shoulder.

:Like the Deluxe figure, the HA Sideswipe is something of a shellformer and suffers from an excessive amount of kibble, as nearly the entire top of the vehicle mode is folded up into a backpack, with only the rear bumper being incorporated as Sideswipe's chest. Partly as the reason, it is also quite hard for him to be able to stand up, as his thigh joints are tight and the rubber tubing on his thighs can get quite tense during posing, constantly wanting to reset his torso to tilt back up and as well as wanting his legs to be straight, thus overbalancing him and making him fall on his backpack.

:A great deal goes unmentioned in the instructions: in addition to the seats behind Sideswipe's shoulders, there are pegs on both forearms that a Human Alliance human figure can stand on or have plugged into their back, but neither are accomplished very well; the pegs also interfere with free rolling in vehicle mode, scraping on the ground. There is a fold-out handle under the swiveling rear window section, which seems to serve no purpose; it's possible to fold this section over Sideswipe's head (and, by extension, any human figure sitting behind his right shoulder), but the handle is only reached if the human figure has its left arm raised straight up and the seat is in just the right position. There are also small tabs that fold out of Sideswipe's waist to make him more movie-accurate. The small turret on his right shoulder can be slid upwards slightly, allowing it to clear the shoulder much better. Sideswipe also has an extra hinge near either thigh swivel that is completely hindered by the rubber tubing on his legs. Finally, Sideswipe has a battle mask; or rather, his normal head is his battle mask. A thin sliver in the middle of his face flips back to reveal his "real" face. It looks... odd. It's probably best to leave the thing down and never speak of this feature.
: This roughly Deluxe-sized version of Sideswipe is a kid-friendly version with a simpler transformation, transforming from a Corvette Stingray car to a simplified version of his robot mode presented in the Revenge of the Fallen movie. His main gimmick is his spring-loaded arm-blades which automatically swing down when pulled upward.
*Sideswipe (Robot Replicas, 2009)
:Robot Replicas Sideswipe is a non- transforming, but highly detailed and articulated interpretation of his robot mode from the movie. He features highly posable legs, arms, feet, head, waist, neck and shoulders, making him both an awesome kid's toy and display piece.
:Funnily enough, despite the Robot Replica promise of total movie-accuracy, his arm-blades are considerably shortened and are a weird metallic blue colour, rather than the silver/gray you might expect.

:Sadly, his "Wheel feet" do not roll, making Sideswipe somewhat imobilized.
: Power Bots Sideswipe is a bulky, non-transforming toy for younger children. He features limited articulation in his limbs and head, two very blunt swords, and various playing sound clips and flashing lights. He has an North Americanised Australian accent!
**Accessories: Two flare launchers

:Transformers Sideswipe is a new sculpt designed for greater robot mode accuracy compared to his original Deluxe Class mold, and replaces his swords with twin hand-held flare launcher pistols (which were briefly used during the Egypt battle in Revenge of the Fallen). Sideswipe now has toe and heel spurs so that he can balance on a flat surface without falling over, a problem that the previous Deluxe Sideswipe suffered. Both the black and silver molded "springs" on his lower legs are compatible with any weaponry using 3mm clips. Additionally, the guns can be attached to flip-up panels and swung out in vehicle mode to form an attack mode of sorts, or they can swivel back while in this configuration to store on his back in either mode. Interestingly, despite the fact that his hands are specifically sculpted with grooves to accommodate his launchers, Sideswipe is also capable of wielding 5mm posts.

:Hasbro added a red deco design to the front of the car and red windows in an effort to differentiate him from the previous Sideswipe molds. Stock photos on the back package and instructions show the front deco extending to the side panels, giving it a flame appearance. The Japanese TakaraTomy release of Sidearm Sideswipe drops the less accurate red vehicle mode decos in favour of keeping the silver paint on his wheels, which Hasbro dropped due to budgetary reasons. This release also changed the windows from red to a dark purple.

:His head's light-piping is sculpted out of the same red plastic as his windows, but his eyes are painted blue. Oddly, Hasbro's stock photos show him with only one eye painted.

:Sidearm Sideswipe was also on the receiving end of a late retool, closing off the tops of the hip balljoint sockets, severely limiting his outward leg motion. There is a perfect outline where the change was made which one can use as a cutting guide if so inclined. This change was likely made to reduce stress on the rubber tubing connected to his thighs.
**Accessories: MechTech Blaster/Cybertanium Sword

:Part of the second wave of Dark of the Moon MechTech Deluxe Class toys, this version of Sideswipe is an all new tooling, with a different transformation scheme compared to the previous Deluxe versions of the character. Sideswipe changes into a Corvette Stingray concept convertible in a light grey/beige color scheme and open top. The interior is highly detailed, with seats, dashboard and steering wheel all molded into the compartment, though it's missing its floorboards. The box art and the instructions can't seem to agree which way the tail lights (which are his toe/heel spurs) are supposed to point in robot mode - the stock photo used on the card and main instruction image show them pointing forward, while the instructions themselves indicate they should point backward, implying it is probably the correct way. His arm blades are now a single piece, rather than the two piece blades from previous molds.

:Underneath the front hood (which ends up on his back) is some sculpted, unpainted faux-kibble in the form of four circles in a row, which are meant to represent the four exhaust pipes on the back of the vehicle, which usually end up on his back in robot mode. The actual pipes still end up on his back. They're just near his waist.

:Sideswipe's MechTech weapon, a large blaster, can convert to a runed Cybertanium sword with the press of a button. The weapon can be stored in any of the three MechTech ports in either mode, all of which include the spring-loaded filler piece to hide them when not in use. While the box art shows the blade of the flip-out sword painted blue with white Cybertronix runes, the final version opts for bare gunmetal plastic instead.

:The figure suffers from a small design flaw in that the front hood of the car is attached by such tiny pegs that it pops off quite easily.

Oh, and he's also not vain at all: those alt modes of his are chosen for speed only. It's a total coincidence that the fastest one just happens to be a sleek, sexy, concept model that's better than your car, honest!
When Sideswipe joined the Autobots he trained under the veteran warrior Ironhide, learning the arts of war. After his training was complete, he went on to become the protector of a settlement of displaced Autobots. This settlement was found by the pitiless Demolishor, who slaughtered them nearly to a bot. Sideswipe was ashamed, not only over having failed to protect his charges, but also because he had lived to tell the tale. Tales of the Fallen issue 2

The ship and the Wreckers stayed behind in NASA, Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)Dark of the Moon issue 3 and had hidden themselves in the junk yard. Once discovered, they were brought to Diego Garcia to train with the other Autobots and Major Lennox's soldiers in defense of their new home. Alliance issue 4 However, Sideswipe proved a loose cannon as he continued his vendetta against Demolishor when the Decepticon turned up in Montevideo, Uruguay. Understanding this, he was forced to admit that Ironhide's admonishment of him was correct. Tales of the Fallen issue 2

Sideswipe didn't have long to wait for another shot at his nemesis. Soon enough, Demolishor had been sighted in Shanghai, China. Alliance issue 4

Why, if he didn't know better, he'd think they were fighting the two 'cons they'd helped! Transformers Comic issue 2.7

After the Autobots tracked the twins to the Decepticon's base, it became clear they weren't traitors after all and had been framed. Did Sideswipe apologise? Hell no, he instead had a scary amount of fun slaughtering drones and had to be told off by Ironhide for excessive bloodlust. Transformers Comic issue 2.8

Later, after the twins turned out to have told the truth about this "Fallen" guy, Sideswipe was with Ironhide cleaning up the remaining Decepticons on Earth, (rather worryingly) including Hoist!. Transformers Comic issue 2.11

The emotionally overwhelmed Autobots nearly came to blows with their former allies but finally agreed to stand down and remain on Earth.

When Major Lennox learned Witwicky had come up with a way to possibly resurrect Optimus Prime, NEST travelled to Egypt instead. Sideswipe, who had been covered in a cargo net while being transported in vehicle mode, relished the chance to cut through his bonds when deployed from the air. He fought off many Decepticons during Operation: Firestorm, and bore witness to Sam resurrecting Optimus Prime with the Matrix of Leadership, and the death of The Fallen. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)
Before the war, Sideswipe was a major competitor in the gladiatorial games. Years of training made him a master at fencing, something he viewed as an art to be celebrated through battle. When war broke out, he was sickened by the Decepticon's slaughter and vowed to use his fencing skills to defend the innocent. #Robot Replicas Before he enlisted with the Autobots, Sideswipe traveled the galaxy in search of the most proficient warriors and devastating martial arts he could find, leading to him becoming an Autobot combat instructor. He's such a hardcore master of Metallikato, he dismisses Bludgeon as a master because of his reliance on guns.

He's also a raw, untrained guy! Used to battling alone, he was given over to Robert Epps to be trained as a team player. The two have become good friends, and Sideswipe is now more dangerous than ever. #Human Alliance
He also prides himself as a good driver, but he admits that he's not as good as Mikaela. Her instinctive driving ability is so silky smooth that it allows Sideswipe to focus purely on his blades. #Human Alliance 2

The Decepticon was swiftly defeated by the Autobots, but Optimus allowed Megatron and Starscream to flee.
Cyber Missions 12

Optimus later laid a trap for a final confrontation against Megatron, and had a hologram of the imprisoned Soundwave as bait. Megatron tried to retrieve his soldier, but the image shifted to a hologram of Sideswipe. Sideswipe calmly taunted the Decepticon leader as he swiped at the illusion, but Sideswipe did not take part in the ensuing battle.
When Alice stole an RV and went on a rampage, Sideswipe was part of the NEST team sent to stop her. She attempted to ram the NEST roadblock, but Sideswipe decided to ram her first, and impaled her through the front windscreen. He was later seen carrying the RV over his head. He observed Ratchet examining Alice's corpse, and wondered why any Cybertronian would stoop to taking on the appearance of a lesser life form. Nefarious issue 1 He was sent with Ironhide to stop a Decepticon trio. Ironhide warned him not to get cocky, but Sideswipe merely responded that he really was that good, before chopping Brakedown in half. He was ready to finish off the apparently-surrendering Dirt Boss as well, but the surrender was just a ruse to allow Soundwave time to attack, and Sideswipe was caught in the explosion. He survived to see Optimus Prime swoop in and capture Soundwave. Nefarious issue 2
Sideswipe helped prepare a nuclear shelter in Odessa, Texas to house Soundwave. Nefarious issue 3 When Soundwave led them to the location of the Initiative base and it wasn't there, Sideswipe wondered why Optimus continued to trust the Decepticon. Soundwave traced the Initiative to Oregon, and the Autobots went there to launch an attack. Ratchet suggested Sideswipe stay behind him to avoid damage, but Sideswipe scoffed at the very idea. However the Autobots found themselves facing brainwashed Transformers, and Sideswipe even recognized one as Armorhide. Nefarious issue 5 Optimus sent Sideswipe, Skids and Mudflap to help Bumblebee's team. He was the first to spot Barricade and wrestled with the Decepticon until Optimus intervened.

:Dark of the Moon Cyberverse Sideswipe is a new mold based on his open-top Stingray concept vehicle. He is more screen accurate in basic robot mode proportions than the Revenge of the Fallen Legends Class Sideswipe. The plastic between his head and the Autobot insignia is darker than in the stock photography. Like the rest of DOTM product, and unlike the stock photography, he is entirely dull, unpainted grey plastic.

Oh, and he's particularly blue and yellow.
* On June 11, 2008, blurry camera phone photos from the set of Revenge of the Fallen offered the first look at Sideswipe's vehicle mode, which was believed to be a 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 at that time. Ten days later, leaked photos offered a better look at the car being painted by Saleen, which was now revealed to be a never-seen-before Corvette model. On August 7, 2008, Jalopnik claimed having received information that the car was a so-called "Corvette Centennial Concept". General Motors finally admitted the car's existence at the Chicago Auto Show in February of 2009, now confirming that it was, in fact, a new Corvette Stingray concept.

* Rumored names for Sideswipe in the early days of the movie shooting were "Hot Rod" (which might have been a case of fans simply suggesting a random name and other fans subsequently treating it as gospel) and "Stinger". The latter originated with a (real) call sheet leaked in June 2008, which suggests that "Stinger" was an actual working name.

*An unreleased red and white redeco of the Robot Powered Machines Sideswipe mold was displayed at Toy Fair 2010, amongst a mix of cancelled RPM and planned Speed Stars vehicles. Nobody knows what its deal is, and with the wholesale cancelling of the segment, probably never will.

* According to Ironhide in Titan Magazine's "Law and Disorder" letters section, Sideswipe has a relative named Sunstreaker.

* The only thing more important to Sideswipe than looking good while being awesome... is God.

* For Dark of the Moon, Sideswipe's alternate mode as a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray concept car was changed from the hardtop version as seen in Revenge of the Fallen into a convertible. He does still sport a hardtop when he changes into his Stealth Force mode, however.

Blades will never be the Autobot poster child. He's a dirty, underhanded street brawler at heart and proud of it. The fact that his alternate mode and function as air support can keep him at a distance from combat infuriates him. Blades would rather use his rotors to gut a Decepticon from antenna to tailpipe than to fly. When he fights, he wants to feel his enemies' fuel spraying across his steel skin. Blades does his job and does it darn well, but if there's a way to get his hands dirty in the process, you can bet your processor he'll find it.

Blades combines with his fellow Protectobots to form Defensor, Gaia Guardian or God Guardian.
When the Insecticons attacked an inhabited city on Earth, Optimus Prime called upon the Protectobots to evacuate the civilians caught in the crossfire. Later, as Earth's orbit was diverted to the Sun by the Combaticons, while Inferno and Red Alert fought the flames, Blades saved civilians trapped by the fires. Soon afterwards he was spraying his limited supply of coolant onto the flames, but was concerned that he was running out and couldn't cool down the whole planet. The Revenge of Bruticus

Blades, as part of Defensor, totally blew up Bruticus. Afterwards, he was with the Protectobots when they arrived ostensibly to save some window-washers from a burning skyscraper. Blades actually blew the workers from their dangling platform. Fortunately, Streetwise managed to catch them below. Later still, Blades and the other Protectobots were ordered to help defend Autobot Headquarters from a Decepticon attack. They merged into Defensor and activated his useless force field, which almost immediately deactivated, allowing the Decepticons to blast Defensor back into his component parts. {{storylink|B.O.T. In the year 2006, the Autobots were asked to help the Dutch authorities deal with French rebels. After dispersing the human aggressors, Blades was shot down by Galvatron. First Aid took him back to Metroplex for repairs. While Blades recuperated, the Combaticon Swindle broke into the city and managed to steal Metroplex's transformation cog, and First Aid left the Autobots when he failed to stop the theft. Unfortunately, just as First Aid left, the Autobots were called upon to deal with a rampaging Trypticon. Hot Spot ordered the remaining Protectobots to combine into Defensor even without First Aid, and they successfully saved a train full of civilians. After First Aid returned to the Autobots, Blades ferried him into Metroplex while the giant Autobot was battling Trypticon, enabling the medic to realign the replacement cog properly, which in turn allowed Metroplex to triumph. The Ultimate Weapon
Blades was one of the first three (along with Wheelie and Slingshot) to be drained by the energy leech, Tornedron. The whole of Cybertron was likewise sucked dry moments later, though all were restored when Grimlock saved the day. Call of the Primitives

Later in 2006, the Protectobots arrived at the aftermath of the battle between the Technobots and Terrorcons at Mark Morgan's laboratory. They transported the injured Jessica Morgan to County General Hospital and watched over her as the doctors restored her ability to walk with an exo-skeletal structure, enraging the robo-phobic senior Morgan. This had negative consequences. What a jerkface. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers comic
When the Stunticons formed Menasor to attack a baseball stadium, the Autobots' human friend Kenji called in the Aerialbots and Protectobots in response. Blades and the Protectobots put out the fires caused by the Decepticon mayhem before combining into Defensor. Their central component was injured battling Bruticus, however, forcing the Protectobots to disengage while Hot Spot tended to his injuries. Thinking quickly, Kenji told Superion to aim for the legs, and the giant Autobot shot out the leg components of both Bruticus and Menasor. Blades and the smaller Protectobots then leapt into action, linking up with the Decepticon combiners in place of their normal limbs. Kenji laughed as the Protectobots sent their captive Decepticon super-robots kicking through the sky, planning to drop them off over the nearest ocean. {{storylink|Fight! =====Scramble City=====
Blades and the Protectobots participated in the Scramble City project under Ultra Magnus's direction, working towards the construction of Metroplex. After the Decepticons uncovered their secret building site, the Protectobots rode into battle alongside the newly completed Metroplex. Blades and his comrades arrived and formed Defensor just in time to act as the harbinger of Metroplex and his really big gun. Scramble City: Mobilization
The Great Transformer War
Many years later, Galvatron and the Decepticons kidnapped Doctor Dalton of the planet Eran to increase the potency of their combiner robots. The Protectobots and Aerialbots attempted to storm Trypticon in order to recover the kidnapped scientist, but were repelled by Scramble City base modes with launcher power (only $9.99 at Toys"R"Us!). Superion in particular suffered critical injuries. Reconsidering their tactics, Hot Spot transformed to repair bay mode in order to bring the Aerialbots back on-line, while Blades infiltrated Trypticon alone to recover Dalton and the other Protectobots held off Menasor and Bruticus long enough for their teammates to complete their missions. Inside Trypticon, Blades was able to retrieve Dalton with little fuss, as most of the Decepticons were distracted watching the fight. Dalton was brought back to Metroplex, where he agreed to work on the new Technobot warriors for the Autobots. The Great Transformer War issue 1
In 2011, Galvatron attacked Cybertron in order to gain control of Vector Sigma. Blades was stationed there with the Protectobots and fought off the Decepticons' initial assault. Four Warriors Come out of the Sky As Defensor, Blades' team continued battling on Cybertron for some time. The Mystery of Planet Master Later, Blades and the Protectobots assembled on Earth at Ultra Magnus's command. Their mission was to stop the Decepticons from interfering with Hot Rod and the Headmasters, who were searching for the hidden location of the Matrix of Leadership. On a security sweep, the Protectobots ran across their old nemeses, the Combaticons, and went into battle. The two teams quickly assumed their combined forms as Bruticus and Defensor, as the fighting escalated. Birth of the Fantastic Double Prime

When Galvatron made another strike on Cybertron, this time to steal the super-metal Cybertonuron, Blades and the Protectobots assembled before the Space Bridge on Earth to be transported into battle. Seeking out the Combaticons on the battlefield, the Protectobots soon formed Defensor and fought once more with Bruticus. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 1 Defensor and Bruticus's battle continued as Defensor delivered a devastating smash to Bruticus's back. For at least part of the battle, the two teams disassembled again, as Hot Spot and Blades were seen firing upon the aerial Combaticons again. Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 2

Blades and the Protectobots were dispatched to Peru with the Trainbots when a volcano erupted, leaving a mountainside village in dire peril. Their rescue mission was blocked by the Predacons. Shōki and the Trainbots occupied the fiends so that the Protectobots could proceed on to the village and protect the innocent lives. Nevertheless, the Protectobots failed to reach the village, as they were intercepted by the Decepticons' second wave, the Headmasters. Blades and the Protectobots briefly struggled with the Headmasters before forming Defensor, but that left them grouped together and vulnerable to an underhanded attack. Defensor was taken out of action by Mindwipe's paralysis ray, which was strong enough to force Blades and the Protectobots apart and leave them completely immobilized. The Dormant Volcano Mysteriously Erupts

Blades and the Protectobots were part of a strike team that flew to the moon to disrupt Scorponok's gathering of Decepticons. They immediately formed Defensor upon entering the battle. Return of the Immortal Emperor When the planet Sandra sent out a distress call asking for energy, the Autobots of Earth responded. While they were loading the Trainbots full of supplies, however, Galvatron and the Decepticons arrived to take the energy for themselves. Blades and the Protectobots fought back against the enemy, and formed Defensor to counter Devastator on the battlefield. SOS from Planet Sandra

After the death of Ultra Magnus, the Autobots were desperately trying to pick up the slack during Sixshot's campaign of destruction around the globe. Blades and the Protectobots assembled as Defensor to go out and confront Sixshot at one of the attack sites, but they apparently didn't fare too well. The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg When the Decepticons seemingly abandoned Earth, Blades and the Protectobots assisted Spike in rebuilding the planet after the enemy's departure. On one occasion, they located Sixshot's old command base. By combining into Defensor, the Protectobots helped Raiden and Computron obliterate the base, wiping out all trace of the Decepticons' presence. Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 1)

Following a lengthy period of inactivity, the Decepticons renewed their attacks on Earth. With Fortress still off in space, Spike Witwicky dispatched Blades and the Protectobots to attend to the threats. In Canberra, Australia, the Protectobots confronted Bruticus at one of Scorponok's new Death Towers. As Defensor, the Protectobots were beaten severely by Bruticus. The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 1) As part of Defensor, Blades participated in the Autobots final battle with Scorponok's Decepticons at the North Pole. Shortly after the Protectobots were given life by the Matrix, Optimus and Wheeljack learned of a cerebro-shell implanted in Prime which had allowed Megatron to tap into the Matrix and eavesdrop on their conversations. Reversing the signal, the Autobots learned of a Decepticon plot to steal the energy-converting hydrothermocline. Taking the Protectobots with him for the mission, Optimus moved to intervene on Megatron and his Combaticons' plans.

At the industrial site, a human named Ethan Zachary broke a stand-off between the two forces by suggesting they battle for the hydrothermocline in a virtual game program he had created, so that nothing of value to either side would be damaged in the melee. With their consent, Zachary uploaded Optimus, Megatron, and the two Special Teams into his computer game environment called Multi-World. Blades was teamed with Groove, and they maneuvered through an area called the Cloud-Steppes, where cities floated on clouds and absurdly long walkways were supported underneath them. The Combaticon flyers cut loose one of the walkways, sending the ground-bound Groove and a group of Cloud-Steppers flailing and falling. Against his better judgement, Blades caught the falling humanoids instead of saving his teammate. This proved to be a good idea, as the Cloud-Steppers unleashed their patented cloud-in-a-knapsack trick to blind the Combaticons until Groove shot them down. Afterdeath!

When Grimlock took control of the Autobots, Blades began to muse on deserting like Goldbug and Blaster. While on a mission in London, his bad mood was made worse by being attacked by Action Force, and he came close to killing the humans before realizing this was against the Autobot code.
During one of their raids, Hound hesitated to shoot a Cybertronian who said he was weaponless. Blades blasted the Cybertronian, who was in fact reaching for a weapon, and berated Hound for being "soft". War Without End! Then, under the influence of mind parasites, he tore a Cybertronian's cable out with his teeth on an unnamed planet in the K'tord Nebula. Blades and the unit joined into Defensor, and attempted to grapple with Devastator hand-to-hand. When it became evident that the two titans were simply causing more damage, the Protectobots split up to deal with Devastator through more subtle means. It was Blades who got the most dangerous assignment of distracting Devastator while his team disabled the rampaging Ultracon with teamwork.
Hundreds of thousands of years ago on Cybertron, before the war with the Decepticons, Blades was part of an Autobot security force in the city of Kaon. His squad was tasked with hunting down the renegade operators of gladiatorial contests in the degenerate slum areas of Cybertron, particularly the brutal fighter who would come to be known as Megatron. Megatron Origin issue 2

When Megatron and many other prisoners escaped, Blades was part of the field team attempting to bring them back under control. He was seen having difficulty contacting other units, as Sentinel Prime made the decision to bring out his Apex armor. Megatron Origin issue 4
Generation 1
*Blades (Protectobot, 1986)
**Team ID number: P3
**Japanese ID number: C-72
**Accessories: "Photon Pistol", left & right "twin launchers"

: Blades transforms to a rescue helicopter resembling a Bell UH-1V Iroquois. He also comes with a pair of side-mounted (non-firing) cannons. He is a Scramble City-style combiner limb, who can form the arm or leg of any such combiner—though he normally forms Defensor's right arm. His fists are unusual in that their post holes are on the side rather than the top, an oddity he shares with Groove and First Aid. A hook-shaped handle on his gun allows him to hold it normally... in his right hand only, though. Subsequent releases of him in the "Classics" line omitted the rubsign.

: This mold was also used to make Fly-Up.

: All five Protectobots were made available in many markets as a complete gift-set as well as on individual cards/boxes.

: A Generation 2 redeco of Blades in blue and black S.W.A.T.-style deco, as well as the rest of the Protectobots and the Stunticons, never made it past the stage of production samples. These toys are among the most exceedingly rare Transformers ever made; only roughly a half-dozen samples of each piece are known to exist.
Universe (2008)
Classic Series
*Autobot Blades (Voyager Class, 2008)
**Accessories: 2 missiles, rotor blades, Cyber Key

: A redeco of Cybertron Evac, Blades transforms into a Eurocopter Dauphin rescue helicopter. His rotor blades spin using a geared push-button, and become a spinning-blade weapon mounted on his robot mode's left arm. He has an adjustable tow-hook on a string, which retracts with the push of a button: this gimmick ends up on his right robot-mode arm. Inserting a Cyber Key into his back end (backpack in robot mode) swings around a pair of spring-loaded missile launchers that double as the helicopter's engine exhausts when not deployed (or loaded with missiles). The Latin phrase "semper referemus", roughly translated into "We will always bring them back", is printed in very small print around his Autobot symbol. The key is clear Cybertron-style with silver paint and a red Autobot symbol, which doesn't match his box art.

: Joe Kyde originally did a deco sheet (based on a real Coast Guard color scheme for the Dauphin) for an Evac redeco in the Movie toyline. However, this was replaced in the toyline by Movie Evac, a retool of Blackout. Bill Rawley later utilized the unused deco sheet as the starting point for Universe Blades, which is why the color layout isn't accurate to Blades's classic appearance.

: This mold was also used to make Universe Springer and Shattered Glass Galvatron.
*Aerial Rivals (Multi-pack, 2008)
**Accessories: Rotor blade

: This redeco of the Legends of Cybertron version of Evac is a heavily simplified version of the Voyager-class toy, with his vehicle mode having a back mounted (non-firing) twin missile launcher (which is carried onto his robot mode), as well as being armed with a rotor blade on his left arm which can rotate, but cannot spin freely. He actually sports a similar, yet notably different deco than the Voyager version of the toy/character.

: Blades was only available in a Target-exclusive five-pack with Legends-class versions of Air Raid, Skydive, Ramjet and Thrust.

: This mold was also used to make the Classics Legend Whirl.

G Guardian
* Graze (Candy toy, 2012)
: Graze is a snap-together candy toy model kit produced by Kabaya for their G Guardian series, coming in an individual box packed with a stick of (chalky) gum. He can combine with his five wave-mates to form Gaia Guardian. He, along with First Aid, Groove, and Streetwise, can also combine with Kabaya's Transformers Gum Hot Spot to form Guardian. G Guardian's Heatrock and Skyfeather attach to Guardian to create God Guardian.

Notes
* According to an essay by Jon and Karl Hartman in Fumihiko Akiyama's unofficial BotCon Legends: Ten Years' Chronology fanzine, the Generation 2 version of Blades was one of the brothers' top two choices for a 1994 exclusive. Ultimately, however, they went with Breakdown instead.
