The Apex Armor is one of the relics of the Thirteen (or an armor of Decepticon design; it depends on who you ask). Judging by the name, it's probably not the worst set of armor you could find. While normally compacted in a disk, when placed over a Transformer's chest it will expand into a huge set of armor able to withstand any attacks, from blasters, bombs or melee weapons.

Fiction
Exiles
The Apex Armor was created by Solus Prime. Long after, while waiting for the Autobots on Cybertron, Alpha Trion had a few daydreams about Optimus Prime returning with the relic, as well as the AllSpark and other lost and legendary treasures. Transformers: Exiles

Prime cartoon
The Apex Armor was stored in the Iacon Vaults until late in the war when Megatron's forces stormed Iacon. Along with the other relics, it was ejected into space and eventually found its way to Earth, where it ended up in the Antarctic. A human research team found it and took it back to their base. Later it was discovered by Starscream, who took it for his own while Optimus Prime and Dreadwing were fighting each other over it. He pulled it from the ice it was encased in and identified it as armor of Decepticon design. When he placed the roughly disc shaped object to his chest it expanded over him into a full body armor that towered over both Optimus and Dreadwing. It proved to be a very powerful weapon, allowing him to survive two attacks by Optimus Prime and Dreadwing. It was impervious to Dreadwing's sword and energy blasts only served to stagger him. He had heightened strength, but the armor did not have any weapons, nor did it restore his ability to transform. Triangulation
Optimus Prime hunts for relics in Antarctica and finds himself caught between shifting alliances.

Synopsis
Megatron notes that the second relic is in Antarctica, and Dreadwing volunteers to head there. In the Harbinger, Starscream is about to operate on himself to insert his new T-cog when the ship's computer picks up the fact that the Decepticons are dispatching teams to four locations. At the Autobot base, Bulkhead departs through the GroundBridge. Optimus Prime announces he's heading for the Antarctic, and announces that Ratchet will need backup on his mission—Wheeljack.

Starscream uses a GroundBridge remote control to head to the Antarctic on a hoversled. He's quickly spotted by Dreadwing and some Vehicons who knock him off his sled. Starscream at first mistakes Dreadwing for Skyquake, and soon has some cuffs slapped on him. The group trudges through the snow to where the relic is located, to find it has already been dug out of the ice and is gone. The Vehicons start searching and find vehicle tracks. They're approached by Optimus, who demands the return of the relic, and the standoff quickly turns into a firefight. After Prime takes out two of the Vehicons and scores a hit on Dreadwing, the Decepticon starts breaking out heavier weapons, and proves to be formidable with a sword. They take a dive off a cliff, following which Optimus brings the ice crashing down, burying Dreadwing. With Starscream's help, Optimus takes care of the remaining two Vehicons, and demands Starscream lead him to the relic.

Optimus and Starscream take a long walk through the ice and snow until they finally reach a human base. Optimus radios home and gets Agent Fowler to evacuate the human base so he can safely retrieve the relic. Meanwhile, Dreadwing breaks free of the ice and heads out to find Prime. With the base clear, Optimus and Starscream venture inside to find the relic still frozen in a chunk of ice. They're interrupted by Dreadwing. While Optimus and Dreadwing fight, Starscream sets about liberating the relic, which turns out to be the Apex Armor. Outside, Dreadwing has Optimus on the ropes and is about to strike when Starscream, now wearing the armor, crashes out of the building.

Both Dreadwing and Optimus attack the rogue Decepticon, but he swats them aside, repeatedly. Optimus suggests to Dreadwing that they will need to cooperate to defeat Starscream. While Dreadwing flies around, Optimus slaps a bomb onto Starscream, but the Apex Armor proves invulnerable even to that. Optimus realizes that Starscream still has a vulnerability—his lack of flight. While Optimus keeps Starscream's attention once more, Dreadwing plants explosives on the ground, and just as Starscream works out that the pair are up to something, the bombs detonate. Starscream disappears into a hole blasted in the ice. With no relic left to claim, Dreadwing and Optimus go their separate ways, though Dreadwing swears to terminate Optimus next time.

At the bottom of the ocean below, Starscream walks along, still protected by the Apex Armor.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
* Starscream is missing his manacles during Optimus and Dreadwing's first battle.

Continuity errors
* The Apex Armor was established in Exiles as a relic of Solus Prime; however, Starscream calls it armor of "Decepticon origin", although Starscream could be mistaken.

Continuity notes
* This episode happens concurrently with the previous episode and, presumably, with the following two.
* Starscream is preparing to install a new T-cog into himself at the beginning of the episode, which he scavenged from his traitorous clone after killing him in "Armada".
* Starscream refers to helping Orion Pax regain his memory and giving information to the Autobots.
* Starscream mistakes Dreadwing for Skyquake, who died in "Masters & Students", and he then attempted to revive him in "Shadowzone".
* Starscream enjoyed killing Cliffjumper and claims he will reunite Dreadwing with his "beloved twin".
* Dreadwing is still mad at Optimus for Skyquake's demise.
* Optimus refers to how he offered Skyquake a chance of redemption, as well as expressing remorse for the Decepticon's demise from "Masters & Students".

Transformers references
* The Apex Armor is a reference to the item of the same name from Generation 1, first introduced with the Commemorative Series reissue of the Powermaster Optimus Prime toy and later appearing in the IDW comics.
* This isn't the first time Starscream has visited a research base in the Antarctic, and been at the center of it exploding.
* Among the tools Starscream tries to operate on himself with are a durabyllium drill and a Laser Scalpel.

Real-world references
* People actually do put flags around archaeological sites in desolate wastelands, in order to find them again.

Trivia
* Optimus still hasn't gotten Raf that snowball he promised to give him the other day.
* This is the first episode in which Arcee does not make an appearance.
* Dreadwing reveals that he has a sword. Whilst a sword has been shown to be included with his toy, this is the first time he has ever used it in-series.
Denizens of the under levels of Cybertron, the Insecticons live in destructive swarms, eating metal and remodeling the landscape into enormous interconnected hive networks.

Fiction
Aligned novels
Shockwave experimented on three specimens, optimizing them for battle in the gladiatorial arenas of Kaon by turning them into combiners—something that disgusted the gladiator Megatronus. They were primitive to the point of barely possessing a sentient consciousness, but surprisingly capable fighters. The way they moved together gave away their nature as combiners even when separate. Even with one of their number dead, the remaining two could combine into a hovering attack mode.

The trio competed in the gladiatorial Tournament of Champions when they encountered Megatronus. He allowed them to scan a vehicle form before attacking. One emerged from a scrapheap as an all-terrain vehicle with magnetic studded tracks and sought a vantage point on the combat pit's wall, while another sprayed acid on Megatronus's shoulder. Megatronus caught the third Insecticon's multiple, vibrobladed hands and tore an arm off, flinging it into the audience and causing havoc.

Taking fire from the other two, Megatronus made the wounded Insecticon fire his own ion cannon into its neck, killing it in an attempt to ensure there would be no combination. He then slammed the acid-spitter to the floor, but it wriggled away and managed to combine with the ATV, wiring itself into girders while blasting and spitting acid at the gladiator. Megatronus transformed and blasted them, before pinning them down in robot mode and smashing them to pieces with two maces. Megatronus roared "I still function!", as the crowd began chanting a shortened version of his name: Megatron. Transformers: Exodus
An Insecticon was left in stasis on Cybertron, acting as a Decepticon sentry. It was awakened by Jack and Arcee's arrival in Kaon. Orion Pax, Part 2

As they used the Key to Vector Sigma to reveal a hidden passage under the city's arena, the Insecticon attacked. Arcee attempted to distract it so that Jack could escape into the newly-revealed entrance, but she was soundly beaten when it slammed her into the arena wall. The Insecticon then tracked Jack to Vector Sigma, but was horrified to see the supercomputer covered in scraplets. Jack hurled one of the scraplets at the Insecticon so that they would stop feeding on Vector Sigma, and the rest of the swarm followed it in attacking the larger beast-bot. The Insecticon was savaged, falling off the bridge into a chasm as it was eaten alive. Orion Pax, Part 3

When Starscream was seeking Energon scraps in an old mine, he noticed an Insecticon doing the same, and was surprised that one was on Earth. Starscream demanded that the Insecticon hand over the Energon it had found, though it instead turned on him and attacked, before Airachnid called it off. Airachnid had managed to control it, due to their being related. Though Starscream suggested that they all team up to end Megatron, Airachnid instead ordered the Insecticon to attack him, however he escaped. Sometime later, the Insecticon attacked Megatron as part of Airachnid's trap, refusing to obey him instead. The Insecticon had the upper hand on the Decepticon leader, particularly when Airachnid removed his fusion cannon from the equation, however Megatron eventually triumphed as he beheaded the Insecticon.

However, as the escaped Airachnid discovered, it was only a scout for an entire hive of Insecticons in stasis underground.Crossfire

Airachnid awoke the Insecticons after detecting a signal from the Nemesis, and sent most of them to terminate Megatron, while others attempted to protect her from the Autobots who arrived to see what was happening. While Optimus Prime and Bumblebee eliminated the Insecticons attacking them, Arcee chased down Airachnid and put her in stasis. At that point her control of the Insecticons ceased, and those attacking the Nemesis stopped and proclaimed their loyalty to Megatron. Then, the Nemesis crashed for some reason. Armada (episode)

Now added to the Decepticon ranks, the Insecticons were free to move about the ship. After Megatron used Dark Energon to bring the ship back online but as a consequence the ship started making its own decisions, Megatron then sent all of the ship's crew, including the Insecticons, to stop the Nemesis. They failed and were stasis locked by the Nemesiss stasis cannon sweep of the ship. They started recovering after Jack disabled the ship's Dark Energon influence. Flying Mind
Tunnel Vision
A single Insecticon went with Knock Out to find one of the Iacon relics in the Manhattan subway. When Arcee and Bumblebee turned up, it fought with Arcee at length, until she managed to get it to come into contact with the third rail on the subway track, frying it. Tunnel Vision
When Megatron orders them to take no survivors, Silverbolt protests, saying they should let the Maximals surrender, only to be struck by the irate Predacon commander. When Silverbolt is perplexed by their resistance, Megatron realizes that they are keeping them from their base. He orders Waspinator and Silverbolt to head to the Axalon. Cheetor takes to the air, and Rattrap converts to vehicle mode, ordering Dinobot to hop on and provide cover fire (disgusting the former Predacon).

Tarantulas, however, is using the psychic link to force Blackarachnia to search for information on the Golden Disks. While she searches through the files, she discovers something of importance, but refuses to show Tarantulas. When Tarantulas is rendered unconscious by a boulder, Blackarachnia downloads the information, then destroys the computer, claiming that it was boobytrapped.

Reaching the Axalon, Silverbolt is shot down by the autoguns, and captured by the Maximals. Dinobot prepares to destroy him, but Rattrap and Cheetor prevent him, instead taking him in to repair him. Rhinox, who has finished, tells the Maximals they must hold the Predacons off for a little while longer. Inside the Axalon, a charge hits the device Rhinox was connected to, heading to a stasis pod with a blank protoform. Outside, the shields fail under the fire, and the Maximals engage—to discover that they are out of ammo. The Predacons seriously injure the Maximals.

Having waited a long time for their victory, the Predacons approach, prepared to deliver the killing blow. Before they can finish the Maximals off, there is an explosion in the hull of the Axalon. When the smoke clears, the Maximals and Predacons alike are shocked to see the cause of the explosion—Optimus Primal. The Predacons attempt to destroy him, but Primal, now with his own Transmetal body, causes the Predacons to scatter. Primal takes to the air, dispatching the rest of the Predacons. Megatron attempts to kill Primal, but Silverbolt knocks Megatron off a cliff, defecting to the Maximals.

After the battle and some repairs, Primal inquires as to how the new bodies do with absorbing energon. Rhinox remarks that all the energon within the area either detonated or was converted to Energon cubes, so it isn't really a problem right now. They'll have to wait for Tigatron and Airazor's report on the rest of the planet. In the meantime, Primal remarks that he has to put his house in order, such as get to know the new additions, and remove Rattrap's personal effects from his quarters.

At the Predacon base, Blackarachnia tells Megatron that Dinobot stole the Disks and destroyed the computers. Megatron and Tarantulas ask if anything from the back ups can be recovered, and when Blackarachnia reveals that it was totally destroyed, Megatron smashes Tarantulas into the wall in rage. Megatron then declares that the Beast Wars has entered a new phase, while, unseen, binary code flashes across Blackarachnia's eyes.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
*When Megatron opens fire on the Maximals the second time in this episode, his middle, ring, and pinky "fingers" are shown clipping through his cannon.
*While in pursuit of Rattrap and Dinobot, Megatron transforms from his beast mode in mid-flight and continues to attack from the air, yet his VTOL engines are inactive on his back rather than deployed.
*Before the Maximals begin getting hammered by the Preds, Rhinox is on top of Rattrap, with him either clipping through Rattrap's rear wheel, or the wheel has no interior.

Continuity errors
* Tarantulas and Waspinator arrive again mid-battle, despite having already arrived at the end of the previous episode.
** Tarantulas and Waspinator are also seen at the very beginning when the Predacons first open fire, despite only arriving (again) later. Megatron's line "Excellent! Reinforcements have arrived" only makes the continuity error all the more glaring.
* Silverbolt claims that the Predacons outnumber the Maximals "more than two to one". The term "more than" implies that there are more than six Predacons present, when in fact there are only six.
* Waspinator and Silverbolt take off for the Maximal base twice, clearly going over the Maximals' heads a second time after the commercial break; the Maximals then reassert the danger of the situation in different phrasing than before. Presumably such a flagrant "error" is a sly stylistic reference to older cartoons which would often repeat actions between acts and episodes, sometimes in contradictory ways.
* Funny things happen with ammunition:
** Dinobot says his weapon is depleted, despite clearly having ammunition bandoleers criscrossed over his torso. The weapon gets fired more times before the episode ends, anyway.
** There's no real in-story reason for the Maximals to run out of ammunition before the Predacons, who have been unloading ordnance at them all night. Rhinox in particular should have fully loaded weapons when he enters the fight. This was almost certainly an intentional choice by the writers, to fit the episode's thematic homage to spaghetti western serials.
* An earlier script revision called for the elevator into the Maximal base to be destroyed during the fight, giving Primal a more practical reason to blow a hole in the side of his own base. Oh well, maybe the big guy was in a hurry.

Transformers references
* While Blackarachnia is searching through Megatron's stuff, a gray model of Starscream's head is in the pile. (It's too small to be the real thing, given that Beast Warriors are shown later in the series to be much smaller than Generation 1 characters.)
* Other items in the pile include a model Supermarine Spitfire, a model helicopter, a number of books, the Holy Grail, three identical spiky planets, a model rocket, a pocket-watch, and a rubber ducky.
* During one of Rhinox's trips through the Matrix, near the end of the episode, the Autobot Matrix of Leadership is seen floating.
* When Rattrap asks where Rhinox went, he describes the Matrix as "where all are one".
* Rattrap filled Optimus's quarters with his things, despite the latter's warning not to do so in "Other Voices".

Real-world references
*The Rat Patrol was a 1960s TV show about a group of Allied soldiers fighting Rommel's Afrika Corps on the North African front during World War II.

* At the end of the episode, it was like a western showdown, espesially with Inferno and Optimus Primal.

Trivia
*After Rattrap throws a rock in the air as an example of what would happen if they moved away from the cover of the boulder, it's blasted into a tiny pebble and hits the ground. All three Maximals' "eyes" then pop out of their heads towards the rock in the fashion of the eyeball gag in classic Tex Avery cartoons.
* Blackarachnia's theft of the Golden Disk data would have consequences carrying through the remainder of the series.
* Though neither admits it, it seems likely that both Tarantulas and Megatron see through Blackarachnia's sleight-of-hand with the backup data tracks. Blackarachnia tells Megatron that the computer was destroyed by Dinobot... after telling Tarantulas that it was destroyed because it was booby trapped. Tarantulas says nothing to contradict this lie to Megatron, and later interrogates her when the chance presents itself in "Bad Spark". Megatron likewise guesses the truth and attempts to strong-arm the data from her in "The Agenda (Part III)".
* This episode continues the Spaghetti Western film references, especially when Optimus fights Inferno.
* Speaking of Inferno, there were plans to have him be a reborn version of Megatron, but those plans obviously never came to be. This abandoned plot was hinted when the two flyers crash into one another, and recover only to find their heads on the wrong bodies, which Inferno found hilarious. Megatron was capable of using Inferno's body during this mix-up to punch Inferno's head.
* As of the end of this episode, four of the eight members of Primal's team have spent time as Predacons, one way or another. Dinobot was originally a Predacon, but left in the first episode, Rattrap briefly defected in "Double Jeopardy" as part of an infiltration, Rhinox was forcibly converted (and subsequently restored) in "Dark Designs", and Silverbolt was duped into joining Megatron's side in the previous episode.
* In the Canadian broadcasts of this episode Tarantulas calls Blackarachnia "Widow" rather than "Witch".
*After the Maximals run out of ammo and the Predacons launch a full gunfire barrage, Dinobot stands up roaring at them, only to get shot in the crotch by Waspinator (You can hear his weapon go off right beforehand), bending over slightly and groaning from the pain.
Posing as the young and eager Autobot known as Hound, Makeshift made his way aboard the Ark as it left Cybertron, travelling to Velocitron with the rest of Optimus Prime's crew. Once the Ark landed, he took a new shape and inspired Ransack and his cronies to overthrow Override's regime and rule Cybertron alone. Not long afterwards, he sabotaged the Ark in an attempt to trap the Autobots on Velocitron, but this failed as the ship was repaired. As tensions boiled over on Velocitron, Makeshift escaped in his Hound persona to the world of Junkion, and took the form of a Junkion trader known as Shearbolt (he may or may not have killed the real Shearbolt) to misdirect Prime's search team. During an interrogation Axer revealed Makeshift's true identity to the Autobots. He once again tried to destroy the Ark. This time, though, Optimus and Jazz managed to outwit him and trapped him in a stasis field. After an interrogation session, he was taken prisoner by the Junkions and trapped in an old spaceship component, unable to escape. When Megatron removed the Requiem Blaster, the component was broken and Makeshift found freedom and an injured Axer. Not only did he refuse to help Axer but he sold him out to the Star Seekers under the guise of Wreck-Gar's friend Detritus. Makeshift attempted to fulfill his mission and activate the GroundBridge for the Decepticons to storm in through, but it had been damaged in a recent Scraplet attack, and Ratchet had it deactivated for repairs. As Bulkhead's suspicion rose, Makeshift asked to be shown around by Miko. He managed to learn the location of the Autobot base from her, and asked if she could show her where the exit was. This led them back to the main control room, where a suspicious Bulkhead demanded he tell the story of the Battle of Darkmount Pass. Makeshift recalled the information from Wheeljack's war record, but got a vital fact wrong. When Bulkhead pointed out his error, Makeshift realized he'd been made, and took Miko hostage, threatening to "squeeze her into pulp".

The ground bridge was eventually ready, and Makeshift activated it at the coordinates he'd been given. As he prepared to go through it, Wheeljack, who'd escaped the Decepticons, came through in the other direction. The pair dueled with their swords until Wheeljack was victorious, and Bulkhead threw Makeshift through the ground bridge. Arriving on the top of the Decepticon ship, Makeshift started to report the location of the Autobot base, but he had failed to notice that the grenade he carried at his hip had been set off by the Autobots. ===Universe Featuring the Wreckers===
Shortly after Cybertron's Great Reformatting, the Quintessons orchestrated a planet-wide invasion. While Judge Brinn led a team of Sharkticons through the lush, technorganic wilderness of Ankmor Park, Night Viper attacked, strangled, and killed the accompanying scientist Extempaxia with his deadly fangs. The Sharkticons retaliated by charbroiling Night Viper with their flamethrowers.

The remaining Quintessons laughed at how easy it was to burn these reformatted Transformers in their semi-organic state, but their glee was short-lived. Night Viper shed his burnt outer layer like a skin and assassinated the remaining Quintesson judge, verbally mocking them for their hubris. Wreckers: Finale Part II

* Night Viper's control art depicts him as having a melee weapon hidden in either shield. The right contains a scythe as in the finished product, while the left would have contained an anchor-shaped blade. This was likely cut to make room for the hidden spark crystal.

* Cobras are not vipers. It would be like calling Tigatron "Striped Dog".

* Night Viper shares his name with the Cobra Night Fighter, codenamed Night-Viper, which was released in the G.I Joe's 1989 toyline.
