Story editor Bob Skir describes the Beast Machine television series as a epic novel for television.".

Controversial even by the standards of other Transformers reinventions (!), Beast Machines is remembered by some as the series which tried to tackle a heavy philosophical concepts--such as what it meant to live in an increasingly technological society and the dichotomy between the desires of the individual and the needs of society and the paradox of a living technological world. The series' detractors complained about an alleged "hippie" agenda of this follow-up to Beast Wars, and a few went so far as to send Skir death threats, causing him to cancel a convention appearance in 2000. Beast Machines followed the adventures of the core Beast Wars cast upon their return home to Cybertron; there, Optimus Primal and his crew find that the whole planet has been made mindless slaves of Megatron, who somehow escaped his captivity (seen at the close of Beast Wars). Throughout Beast Machines two seasons, Primal and his fellow Maximals learn to balance their technological side with a newly-retconned biological aspect, eventually turning Cybertron into an technorganic paradise. Like Beast Wars, Beast Machines was fully CGI; unlike Beast Wars, the show did not go over well. Hasbro's next foray into animation, perhaps as an effort to recover, would be to bring over a year-old Japanese show for consumption in the US, until a new story could be concocted.
Characters
Because developing new CGI character models was, at the time, an expensive and time-consuming process, the number of named on-screen characters in Beast Machines was relatively small compared to most other Transformers shows. It is thus practical to list all the Transformers who appeared in the cartoon. They are listed in order of appearance. (Most drones are not listed, and neither are incidental flashback characters.) Note that many characters besides these are also full-fledged Beast Machines characters, having appeared in other media.
*Thrust
*Obsidian
*Strika

Other
*The Oracle (not much of a personality, but definitely a major speaking role)

Trivia
Mainframe Entertainment executive Dan DiDio explicitly told Bob Skir and Marty Isenberg to ignore all previous Transformers cartoons when writing Beast Machines, because "Beast Wars was too continuity-heavy". It clearly did not work out that way.

The theme tune for the show was Leftfield's Phat Planet. This was also used for a famous Guiness advert. The latter proved a more popular TV slot. It was also used in an episode of C.S.I. during a scene involving parasailing.

The Transformers have taken on myriad alternate forms over the years, but Botanica remains among the most unique: she transforms into a mobile alien plant creature. She is competent and powerful, as well as a bit mystical, and has a strong connection to the planet and affinity for growing things. A scientist first and foremost, she can be fastidious and fussy in her dedication to her work -- sometimes to the point of overlooking the things that matter most important in life.
:Voice actor: Kathleen Barr (US), Atsuko Tanaka (Japan)

Botanica captained the same sort of exploration mission that the Axalon originally undertook. Landing on a planet dominated by plant life, including the mobile carnivorous variety, her crew adopted forms based upon them.

When they received the distress signal from Cybertron sent by Megatron she returned home and was shot down. She was apparently driven mad and trapped in plant-creature mode by Megatron's virus and did not come to herself until she was reformated to be technorganic. After this time she joined with Primal's team to help save Cybertron with a particular focus on the orchard they were attempting to grow.

Botanica eventually formed a romantic relationship with the Maximal Rattrap.

Trivia
* Botanica is a rarity, in that she was a major recurring heroic character in a Transformers television show, but was apparently never intended to have a toy.
Arcee is a female Transformer, usually found in the same general area as her friends and fellow Autobots Hot Rod and Springer, both of whom she cares for deeply. The level-headed and logical one of the three, it is usually Arcee who needs to rein in the other two when their egos or attitudes are getting out of control. In addition to being a fierce warrior and talented gunner, she also just might be one of Rattrap's ancestors.

:Hungarian name: Arszi

Fiction
Generation 1 animated continuity
Voice actress: Susan Blu (US), Masako Katsuki → Yōko Kawanami (Japan)

Although there are many other female Autobots, Arcee appears to be the only one to hold any sort of rank or position amongst the forces found in Autobot City. She seems to share the same basic design as the medical bots on the planet of Paradron. During the assault on Autobot City she was instrumental in helping Springer transform Autobot City to repel the Decepticon invaders, buying precious time for reinforcements and likely saving many lives. She was among the few Autobots to survive Megatron's savage blitz on the city, and was nearly left behind when Galvatron forced the Autobots to evacuate.

Arcee survived the attack, and the crash landing on the planet Junk, all the while going to great lengths in order to protect and care for young Daniel Witwicky, a human friend of Hot Rod's who had wound up on the shuttle with her. Throughout the entire battle with Unicron, Daniel's safety was Arcee's top priority. The almost maternal connection between Daniel and Arcee was a powerful one, which was only strengthened some time later when they became binary bonded as Headmaster partners during an adventure on the planet Nebulos.

The Headmasters
(The Headmasters anime ignores the events from the 3-part "The Rebirth" story arc)

In 2011, Arcee either lost her taste for combat or was slapped into her place by the male Autobots. Mostly because, through-out Headmasters, she acted as Fortress' secretary. That is not an exaggeration... she was literally his secretary, filing reports, working computers and monitoring events. At one point she wanted to leave with Rodimus Prime, Blurr and Kup to search for a new homeworld after Cybertron blew up, but Rodimus told her to stay because she's a girl, and girls can't do anything but stand around and worry and make coffee for the men. During a party shortly afterward, she slow-danced with Chromedome and the pair had something resembling a mutual attraction through-out the show (at one point, Chromedome becomes aroused at seeing her transformation from a car).

Dammit Japan.

Marvel Comics UK continuity
Arcee was constructed by the Autobots in an alternate future 1995 as a good-will attempt to placate angry humans who thought that they were "sexist" for having no women in their group. After trying multiple times to explain that Autobots, being robots, had no gender, Optimus Prime surrendered and ordered Wheeljack and Ratchet to make a new Autobot who would meet the humans' demands for sexual equality. However, when Arcee was unveiled at a public ceremony, her pink, skinny, pink, curvacious, and pink form enraged the very audience Prime intended to placate. Shockwave's Decepticons immediately attacked, looking to crush the "secret weapon" that was promised. Prime warned Arcee to stay back, lest she get hurt in battle, but the female Autobot, rightfully annoyed at the Autobots' lack of faith in her equal ability, singlehandedly forced the Decepticons into a retreat. Hot Rod thought that was pretty hot. Prime's Rib!

Dreamwave comics continuity
Arcee can be seen as a member of Hot Rod's underground rebellion team on Cybertron, battling the forces of Shockwave. Both Hot Rod and Springer appeared to be in love with her, though she seemed rather uninterested in both of them. In reality, Arcee was a sleeper agent for the Quintessons.

Due to Dreamwave's bankruptcy, this story was never concluded. Thank god.

During a battle against a horde of killer Nightbirds, Daniel and Wheelie sacrificed their lives to end the threat. The death of Daniel took a serious toll on Arcee's personality, turning her into a depressed and brooding stereotype. A pink one.
Toys
Generation 1
: No actual transforming toy of Arcee in her original cartoon model was ever made. Images of a hand-sculpted prototype have appeared in several Takara publictions, but it appears the toy never progressed beyond that stage.

: The Japanese Transformers Generations book shows a piece of concept artwork of the Headmaster Chromedome car in pink and white labelled "Arcee", a proposal for a redeco of the toy as Headmaster Arcee from "The Rebirth". (Presumably, then, this was a Hasbro-initiated idea.) The idea does not appear to have gotten any further.

Beast Machines
*Arcee (Mega, 2001)

: The very first true transforming Arcee toy (and currently the only official one of the Generation 1 character) is a redeco and minor retooling of the Beast Wars Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia, transforming into a malformed mish-mash of machine and organic parts in the form of a large spider. The spider-mode fangs become a grappling weapon for her robot mode which extend on a retractable string. The robot mode also features a spring-powered waist-swivel for "power kick" action. Arcee lacks the retail version's additional chest armor, and the oddly-placed holes in her... well, chest, that keep the armor in place.

: Arcee was available only as an exclusive to 2001, and along with Tigatron were the first time since the inception of 3H that they were allowed to use pre-existing characters for convention exclusives. Arcee is also the first convention toy to feature retooling. Preorders recieved their Arcees with a bonus; the box contained a light-sensitive sound chip featuring voice actress Susan Blu's voice saying "Don't underestimate me, I'm more than just a pretty face. Arcee, MAXIMIZE!". These chips are VERY light-sensitve. Many won't shut up to this day.

:Note: Arcee's packaging does not explicitly place her in the Beast Machines toyline; however, her box uses the BM-era "Transformers" logo, and the character is placed on BM-era Cybertron; by contrast, 2001's other BotCon exclusive, Tigatron, used a box with the Beast Wars name and Transformers logo.
Trivia
*When asked about Arcee's design in an interview, Floro Dery's reply was, "Arcee is the naked mechanical equivalent of Princess Leia of Star Wars." Well, that answers that question...while raising a whole bunch of others.

*Arcee fires her gun twice in the original movie.
:The first time, she tries to shoot a Decepticon in the back as they retreat the attack on Autobot City. She misses.
:The second is inside Unicron, fighting his immune system. She tries to shoot a claw (missing again) and instead breaks open a some giant container of water, separating Daniel from the Autobots. Apparently Arcee went to the Imperial stromtrooper school of marksmanship.
:Ultra Magnus is an Autobot in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Ultra Magnus feels he is a soldier and nothing more. He very much prefers taking orders to giving them, and even avoids opportunities for higher responsibility. But when he is forced into those opportunities, he betrays his real talent for the job. He's strong, resolute, dependable, selfless, and courageous. Sadly, Ultra Magnus is the only Autobot who doesn't realize this.

Believing he is nothing but a soldier, Ultra Magnus is perfectly willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good if need be. He knows he's more powerful than the average Autobot, and will throw himself at larger threats accordingly. There is a special enmity between him and Galvatron for this reason, for Galvatron may be the most deadly foe of all. (Also, Galvatron, given his mental state, probably doesn't approve of people he's had blown up getting back up afterward. This can be seen as a sore point for Magnus, too.)

He is possibly Optimus Prime's brother.
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformer manga (Japan-only)
(The "Fight! Super Robot Life Transformer" manga takes place before the events of Transformers the Movie and around the events of Scramble City)

Ultra Magnus first appeared to deliver Optimus Prime his trailer, containing a special cannon upgrade, the "Scramble Power Buster". They engage the Decepticons in battle and Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime team-up to defeat the villains with their "Convoy Magnus Double Cross Kick".

Ultra Magnus also came up with the idea for the global underground transportation system, the Autobot Road.

(The manga specifically notes that Optimus Prime looks upon Ultra Magnus as his "Kid Brother". Although the manga is a suppliment to the TV series, this family-dynamic between the two characters was never used in the cartoon.)
Voice actor: Banjō Ginga (Japan)

(Note: Scramble City takes place before the events of Transformers the Movie.)

Ultra Magnus first came to Earth around the year 1986 to head-up the Scramble City (AKA Autobot City) project. Under his supervision, Metroplex was built. Unfortunately, Metroplex was discovered by the spy Ratbat under Ultra Magnus' watch, who leaked the location back to Megatron.

Binaltech (Japan-only)
While Optimus Prime was fighting the Decepticon on Cybertron, he charged Ultra Magnus to protect the earth and to lead the construction of the new Autobot city. When the crisis annouced by Ravage arrived, he went with Ultra Magnus on a last chance mission to stop Unicron, while sending Skids into the past to restore the timeline so that recent events instigated by Ravage would not happen.

Transformers The Movie
Voice actors: Robert Stack → Jack Angel (US); Show Hayami (Japan)

By 2005, Ultra Magnus was the full-fledged City Commander for Autobot City. Autobot City was under his authority when Megatron and the Decepticons waged their full-scale attack. Ultra Magnus ordered Springer and Arcee to transform it to battle-mode, but it only held the Decepticons off for so long. In the fight, Optimus Prime was mortally wounded and passed the Matrix of Leadership on to Ultra Magnus, making Magnus the new Supreme Commander of the Autobots.

Autobot City was quickly attacked a second time by Galvatron, the upgraded version of Megatron. Ultra Magnus lured him away on his shuttle, but was eventually shot-down onto the Planet of Junk. Galvatron tracked him there and Ultra Magnus managed to draw him away from the other Autobots to face the enemy alone. Magnus attempted to open the Matrix, but the Matrix would not open, and Ultra Magnus was blown to pieces. Galvatron took the Matrix, intending to use it to destroy Unicron.

After the Autobots befriended the Junkions, they used their expertise to rebuild Ultra Magnus. Magnus joined the other Autobots in the battle with Unicron on Cybertron and helped drive the last of the Decepticons from their home planet. The Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Kiss Players (Japan-only)
When Rodimus Prime's defeat of Galvatron in 2005 led to the catastrophic destruction of Tokyo, the new Autobot leader was consumed by guilt. He passed on the Matrix to Ultra Magnus in order to revert to Hot Rod and return to Earth.
Season 3/2010
In 2006 (or 2010, if you're Japanese), Ultra Magnus ceased his role as a City Commander and became head-adviser to Rodimus Prime, the new Supreme Commander of the Autobots and chosen one of the Matrix. At various times he was sucked into a black hole, turned into a synthetic human and had a birthday party.

When the Hate Plague possessed all of Earth and Cybertron, Ultra Magnus singled Rodimus Prime out of all the other Autobots and focused all his rage on him, vowing to track him wherever he went. Ultra Magnus was eventually cured of the Hate Plague when Optimus Prime came back from the dead (again). The Return of Optimus Prime

Rebirth (America-only)
Some time later, Ultra Magnus helped defend Autobot City from a massive Decepticon assault, which was actually a diversion for the theft of the key to the Plasma Energy Chamber. Subsequent to the battle and discovery of the theft, Magnus accompanied Optimus Prime on a shuttle to Cybertron. After Prime got the answers he needed from Vector Sigma, he decided to go to Nebulos and left Ultra Magnus in charge of Cybertron. The Rebirth, Part 1

Ultra Magnus' tenure didn't go very well, as the selfsame massive Decepticon assault force was attacking the planet. Nonetheless, he and the Protectobots struck at Galvatron, and may well have done him in if Scorponok's reinforcements hadn't arrived. Magnus then ignominiously had his power pack torn out and slowly began to die from lack of energon. Still, he was able to relay Galvatron's crazed scheme to Optimus Prime and the Autobot Headmasters before blacking out.

When Ultra Magnus next awoke, the Golden Age of Cybertron had come anew, and the Decepticons were seemingly defeated once and for all. The Rebirth, Part 3

Headmasters (Japan-only)
Voice actor: Yoshitada Ōtsuka (Japan)

Ultra Magnus continued his work as Commander of Autobot City on Earth and was instrumental in several victories over the Decepticons. Because of this, Sixshot singled him out for assasination. Ultra Magnus and Sixshot engaged in a one-on-one duel outside Autobot City, and Ultra Magnus was completely wrecked by Sixshot's six transformations. He was finally done in by Sixshot's mysterious 7th transformation, "Wingwolf". After his death, Ultra Magnus was placed in a coffin and buried on Earth, the planet he loved so dearly.

Generation 2 manga (Japan-only)
E-Hobby
After his death at the hands of Sixshot, Ultra Magnus was aloud entry into the Matrix of Leadership, as he was it’s bearer for a brief time. But Ultra Magnus’ spark still was still restless, he knew he didn’t belong. Using the Cosmic Awareness that accompanies joining the Matrix to spy on the mortal relm, Ultra Magnus learned, by chance of Galvatron II and his massive Mobile Battle Fortress putting the Galaxy at Risk. Determend to set things right, Magnus contacted Optimus Prime via their shared link to the Matrix, and resurrected himself in a similar body using Prime’s Reconfiguration Matrix. Ultra Magnus immediately set out to counter Galvatron II’s invasion and started raising forces of his own. On at least one occasion Ultra Magnus was so thoroughly trounced by Galvatron and his endless puns that he required saving by Optimus Prime in his new Black Body.

In this new form Ultra Magnus is able to switch between various body types (including his original) at will, similar to Optimus Prime, thanks to his contact with the Reconfigeration Matrix. In addition, he is able to tap into his Laser Core to power his blaster and sword.

Ladybird books continuity
Ultra Magnus came from Cybertron to take over leadership of the Autobots after Optimus Prime disappeared. He is opposed by Galvatron as Decpticon leader and this is presented as a prolonged status quo rather than the rather brief version of this scenario presented in the animated continuity. Furthermore Spike Witwicky appears to still be a teenager at this point, making a setting date of 2005 unlikely.
Ultra Magnus functioning as Prime's successor for some time rather than being immediately replaced by Rodimus Prime is presented in this and other micro-continuities based on the action figure line rather than the film.

Marvel Comics UK continuity
:(Note: Ultra Magnus appeared only in the Marvel UK books.)

The remaining Autobot elders spent years designing Ultra Magnus, a leader to lift the resistance out of a deep darkness. He was finally given life in or shortly before 1986 for Operation Volcano. His role was to act as the crucial back-up needed for the Wreckers to successfully destroy their Decepticon targets and then escape in one piece. A serious complication arose when the Matrix Flame, the sacred and eternal blaze linked directly to the Creation Matrix itself, suddenly extinguished. Fearing that something catastrophic had occurred on Earth to the Matrix and its bearer, Optimus Prime, Emirate Xaaron made the decision to send Ultra Magnus to that planet to investigate, even though Operation Volcano was unstoppably set to begin in ten cycles. Magnus travelled to Earth by way of Space Bridge, and found the Ark's crew engaged in a deadly conflict with three new, yet unspeakably powerful, Decepticon warriors just as their leaders Optimus Prime, Prowl, and Ratchet vanished before their optic sensors. Initially concerned only with his investigation of Prime's sudden disappearance, Ultra Magnus ignored the plight of his fellow Autobots until he learned the two situations were linked; Galvatron and his lieutenants were time-travelers from 2006, having employed a mass-substitution mechanism that sent the three Autobots into limbo in order to accommodate their presence at this point in the timeline. This connection was revealed to him by three Autobots from 2006, who had traveled back in time themselves in order to stop Galvatron. They had a plan; they had the means; all they needed was for Ultra Magnus to keep him busy for, oh...an hour or two.

Easier said than done.

Magnus's battle with Galvatron carried them out of the isolated wilderness and onto a human freeway system. It ended when Ultra Magnus threw a tanker truck full of fuel into the path of Galvatron's particle cannon. Galvatron walked away from the blast -- Magnus didn't. Still, the future Autobots succeeded in tricking Galvatron into returning to the future with his plan incomplete, and the timeline more-or-less preserved. Unfortunately, Magnus was out of time: Operation Volcano proceeded without him, with disastrous results. Only one Decepticon was taken out, and the Wreckers' leader Impactor was killed protecting Xaaron. Target 2006

Ultra Magnus would not meet his counterpart, Optimus Prime, until Prime was inadvertently transported back to Cybertron in battle with Megatron. Hooking up with Lord Straxus at Polyhex, Megatron quickly disseminated false information about a new Decepticon madeover to look exactly like Optimus Prime, planning to infiltrate the Autobot forces. Having temporarily assumed control of the Wreckers until their new leader, Springer, was ready for command, Ultra Magnus led them in hunting down the "imposter". This Prime's behavior led Magnus to be suspicious of his information and, after summoning Emirate Xaaron, confirmed his suspicions and welcomed the true Optimus Prime back to Cybertron. Prime wasted no time leading Magnus and the others on a series of successful raids and strike missions against Decepticon-controlled territory. When Optimus decided to return home to Earth, however, Ultra Magnus was caught up in the space bridge's energy discharge as well, arriving on Earth but some considerable distance away from where Prime materialized. Having been frustrated ever since Impactor's death, Magnus welcomed the "vacation" this trip to Earth would provide him, as he took his time trying to track down the Ark's location.

For months, Ultra Magnus enjoyed a peaceful life in the American forests and wilderness, alone with his thoughts. A sudden seismic disturbance brought him back to reality, though, and into contact with three human females whose vehicle had been overturned by the tremor. One in particular, Cindy, took quite a liking to Magnus. As they travelled together to explore a nearby volcano and its connection to the tremors, Magnus was forced back into combat thanks to the arrival of his old sparring partner, the future Decepticon known as Galvatron. Galvatron had constructed a magma siphon atop the volcano's peak, and planned to convert the raw power of a volcanic eruption into enough energy to transform him into a god. Ultra Magnus teamed up with several Autobots from the future, who were trying to bring Galvatron back with them to face justice. Once again, Magnus was used as a "distraction" (read: living punching bag) while the future Autobots set up their plan to override Galvatron's time-jump mechanism and send them all back where they came from. Despite Ultra Magnus successfully getting the slag beat out of him, the override proved unsuccessful, sending only the Autobots back to 2007 and leaving Magnus virtually alone to deal with the fighting-mad Galvatron. Barely managing to rally his courage, Ultra Magnus threw himself into combat with Galvatron one more time, keeping him busy until the volcano exploded, destroying the power siphon and encasing both warriors in molten lava.

Several months later, Ultra Magnus was dug out of the volcano by the Sparkler Mini-Bots. They had been sent to Earth by Springer to monitor the volcano in case Galvatron ever got free. When Galvatron DID free himself several days earlier, though, they found themselves hopelessly outmatched, and hoped Magnus would have better luck. Sadly, the severe beatings Galvatron had routinely handed out to Ultra Magnus, combined with the final excrutiating submergence in molten lava, had nearly unhinged the Autobot's mind, leaving him with a pathological fear of his tormentor. Confronted with Galvatron, Magnus would probably have gone fetal if that pose had any meaning for his people. As the Sparklers heroically tried to stand up to Galvatron anyway, Ultra Magnus saw his rescuers in grave danger and finally managed to push his fear aside and reclaim enough confidence to batter the Decepticon into a temporary retreat. Salvage!

Having renewed his fighting spirit, Ultra Magnus arranged to return to Cybertron with his companions in order to report on Galvatron's activities and hopefully gather the Wreckers for a counter-offensive. Instead, they found the Autobot base in Kalis full of battle signs, and the entire surrounding city-state a virtual "ghost-town". After confronting a legion of robot zombies, the Autobots eventually learned that a crazed scientist named Flame was trying to re-engineer the entire planet as a giant spacecraft, setting off an unstable fusion reactor beneath the planet's surface as a power source. With the help of the Wreckers and the Decepticons Flywheels and Trypticon, Ultra Magnus and his team managed to put an end to Flame's maniacal scheme.

Ultra Magnus and the Wreckers then began preparations to return to Earth and confront the threat of Galvatron, finally, once and for all, and then...*poof*. The Wreckers went to Earth alone, and Ultra Magnus was never seen nor heard from again.

At one point, the Blackball was left in the safekeeping of Ultra Magnus. Galvatron, catching Magnus by surprise, managed to blow him up with a powerful energy blast from his fusion cannon. Recovering the Blackball, Galvatron began to gloat about his victory. That's when Magnus' body hurled his head at Galvatron like a bowling ball, causing the Emperor of Destruction to fall over like a set of pins and drop the Blackball. That's using your head, Magnus! *sigh*

After Prime's and Megatron disappeared during the first space bridge incident The Dark Ages, Part 1, Ultra Magnus retreated from prominence in the Autobot army. However he was eventually able to overcome his own fear and take a role of leadership. Together with Grimlock, he was on the verge of ending the war when Megatron arrived and enslaved the plane with the Aerospace Extermination Squadron. Magnus was put to work in a slave mines. The War Within: The Age of Wrath

Years later, Ultra Magnus and Shockwave worked together to replenish their armies in the Little Iacon incident. Many of the Micromasters created resented Ultra Magnus for bringing him into their war. Micromasters (comic)

After Great Shutdown, Ultra Magnus was reactivated and took the role of security officer under Shockwave's rule, even if he was dissatisfied working under a leader who clearly held his own agenda. After many, many delays, Ultra Magnus confronted Shockwave about the mastermind's plans - but Magnus was silenced by gun fire. He survived by discarding his armor. War and Peace

After Shockwave had been removed from power, Ultra Magnus was content to oversee operations on Cybertron while Prime spent ten issues getting repaired.

IDW comics continuity
spoiler
Ultra Magnus' concept has been tweaked somewhat to fit within Simon Furman's Cold War-influenced G1 reboot continuity; although still a soldier, Magnus' role is similar to that of an Interpol officer. Specifically, he is an agent of the Tyrest Accord. Although never detailed, this Accord seems to be part of a greater Code of Interplanetary Conflict, some form of treaty between Autobots, Decepticons and other alien races. As an enforcer of the Accord, Magnus hunts down any Transformers, Autobots or Decepticons alike, who illegally sell or distribute Cybertronian technology, handing them over to their superiors for prosecution.

One such violation saw Magnus pursue Swindle to the planet Zull. After arresting the Combaticon, Magnus reluctantly released Swindle in exchange for the current whereabouts of an even greater offender: Scorponok. Magnus has a personal grudge against Scorponok, who is the Autobot's polar opposite; while Magnus sets great stock in rules, Scorponik flouts them. Magnus follows Swindle's lead to the planet Nebulos, but although he disrupts Scorponok's operations, the Decepticon is able to escape.

Later on, Magnus arrests Swindle for yet anohter violation, and once again, Swindle offers a deal, leaving Magnus to wonder whether he'll start breaking the rules just to finally catch Scorponok...

Notes
*It has been speculated by some fans that, in animated continuity, Ultra Magnus may have been created from Orion Pax's friend Dion, the same way and at the same time Prime and Elita One were rebuilt by Alpha Trion.
* Ultra Magnus (1986, 2000, 2002)
: Japanese ID number: C-69

: Ultra Magnus is a redeco of the Diaclone Powered Convoy toy, which itself was a redecoed Battle Convoy (pre-TF Optimus Prime) with a new trailer that combined with the cab robot to form a super robot. Whereas the original Japanese use was an upgrade to Convoy, Hasbro released him as a separate character and both the comic and the cartoon ignored the cab robot in favor of the super robot.

:Ultra Magnus transforms into a white Freightliner COE with a blue and red car-carrier trailer. He comes with a rifle that has two pegs that will fit into either the fist of the cab robot or fist of the super robot, and he also comes with two missile launchers that can plug into either the front of the trailer or the shoulders of the super robot. Additional accessories include the cab robot's fists, the super robot's fists, the super robot head, the super robot chestplate, and two crotchplates/trailer hitches.

:The original American toy was released in at least two versions -- one with rubber tires and paint on both heads, and a second with plastic tires and no paint on either head.

:Ultra Magnus was first reissued in Japan in 2000 with little to no changes. Two years later, Ultra Magnus was reissued as a Toys "R" Us exlusive in the United States in the first wave of the Commemorative Series; the American reissue's missiles were elongated to pass modern safety laws. Both reissues had rubber tires and the facial paint.

*Ultra Magnus Movie Preview version (2001)
: In the early stages of the development of the 1986 animated movie, several promotional clips for the movie were produced, including one depicting Ultra Magnus in the original Diaclone Powered Convoy color scheme. The Movie Preview toy was released in 2001 based on that brief (and premature) appearance, featuring a blue colored cab.

*Ultra Magnus Matrix Glow version (2001)
: With a yellow cab and a clear yellow trailer, Matrix Glow Ultra Magnus or Shining Magnus is intended to recall the moment in the animated movie, just before Optimus Prime dies, when the Matrix is passed to Ultra Magnus and he is bathed in its Matrixey yellow light. It was also released in 2001.

: This version is sometimes referred to by fans as "Urine Magnus", or slightly less-polite variations of the same.

Generation 2
* Laser Ultra Magnus (2006)
: Japanese ID number: TRF-13-S

: An e-Hobby exclusive, Generation 2 Laser Ultra Magnus is a redeco of Laser Optimus Prime, transforming into a mid-1990s Western Star 4964EX extended-hood truck pulling a blue and white tanker trailer. He was packaged in the reissue Laser Optimus Prime's box, along with Prime's instructions, bio card and sticker sheet. Yes, the stickers that have "Optimus Prime" written on them.

:In robot mode the bottom of the truck became his familiar windowed chest based upon the original Optimus Prime toy (and the original Ultra Magnus's cab). His main gimmick was light up LED headlights, and a lightpipe in the bottom of his right fist, illuminated by an LED in his right forearm, that would illuminate his clear sword or his double-barreled rifle if they were used in that hand. All three LEDs were activated simultaneously by pressing the sunroof-like depression on the roof of the truck.

:The trailer unfolds to form a battle station bristling with many firing weapons. Primarily, it can fire an air-powered missile launcher, a ripple rocket launcher with 5 missiles that can be launched individually (this turret can also be mounted in Laser Magnus' hand) and a 'disc launcher', that fired several white plastic discs. This disc launcher is the only weapon that can be used in vehicle mode.

:This release uses the toolings that were modified for the Robots in Disguise Scourge toy, and thus has smooth discs and a less pointy sword.

Masterpiece
* Ultra Magnus (2004)
: Japanese ID number: MP-2

: Masterpiece Ultra Magnus is a white redeco of Masterpiece Convoy (Optimus Prime) with all the same accessories, though some have been redecoed. Additionally, his box can be refolded into his classic trailer configuration, but doesn't hold up since it's, well, cardboard. He retains the Matrix, which he can indeed open. Damnit, open.

: As a Takara product, Masterpiece Ultra Magnus was never released in the US, but was eventually released by Hasbro Australia in 2005 for their market as a Target-exclusive, retaining his Japanese packaging, with simple stickers stating a recommended age of 8+, as well as presenting Hasbro Australia's details and explaining what the product was.

Classics
*Ultra Magnus vs Skywarp: Battle For Autobot City (Multi-pack, 2007)

: A redeco of the Voyager class Optimus Prime, this release is part of the Target exclusive Battle for Autobot City set with Skywarp. The final production toy has several major paint paint application differences compared to the toy depicted on the packaging, including the loss of all light blue paint (including his faceplate and crest, both replaced with silver, darker blue on his thighs. Also his red eyes are replaced with the light piping color (blue). Additionally, it seems the smokestacks/double-barreled gun was originally going to be cast or painted white instead of the final's black.

: Like Optimus Prime, the toy's gimmicks are in his weapons - his smokestacks fold together to become a double-barreled gun, and his aero fairing splits and unfolds to become a large shotgun-like blaster. The two weapons also combine into a double-barreled shoulder cannon.

Titanium Series
*Ultra Magnus (6-inch Cybertron Heroes, 2007)

: Titanium Cybertron Heroes Ultra Magnus is an all-new sculpt constructed mostly of die-cast metal. For the first time, Ultra Magnus's cab and trailer are one piece, rather than a partsformer like the Generation 1 toy version. He transforms very similarly to the original toy, but the aformentioned truck cab now folds down into his back rather than detaching and reconnecting, with his head fliping out of the back of the cab.

: Ultra Magnus is armed with a white laser rifle and two shoulder-mounted non-firing rocket launchers. Unfortunately due to the robot mode-oriented design of this figure, as well as size limitations, the rear ramp is now part of his legs as detail and cannot fold down, nor is there access for vehicles to be transported, in any case.

*Ultra Magnus (6-inch Cybertron Heroes, 2007)

: A redeco of the 6-inch War Within Optimus Prime. In white!

Revoltech
* Ultra Magnus (2007)
Ultra Magnus is, unsurprisingly, a redeco of a simultaneously-released Optimus Prime/Convoy figure. A non-transforming but highly articulate action figure, Revoltech Ultra Magnus uses the Revoltech "revolver joints" for maximum poseability. His sculpting is explicitly in the style of Pat "serfdom" Lee's interpretation of Prime.

Magnus comes with a Matrix and photon rifle accessories, as well as a few alternate hands. A unique extra "hand" is a single moulded piece of Ultra Magnus and Optimus Prime's hands clasped together diagonally, so that when attached to both the Prime and Magnus' respective wrists one can create a scene of the two Autobot leaders shakin' like homeys. Additionally, although Magnus comes preassembled with the standard black revolver joints that Prime has, his packaging includes a sheet of replacement white joints one can use to customise Magnus with less obrtusive matching white joints (although not enough joints of the right style are included to swap out all black joints to optimal effect).
*Ultra Magnus (Super Collection figure, 2003)

: "Movie preview" redeco of the Ultra Magnus PVC, based on the original toy's Diaclone colour scheme as seen in early trailers for the 1986 movie.

*Ultra Magnus (Hard Hero bust, 2004)

: The cold-cast porcelain bust of Ultra Magnus was the 13th in Hard Hero's series of Transformers busts. It was designed from line art by Dan Khanna.

*Ultra Magnus and Megatron (Robot Heroes PVC, 2007)

: This is a small, non-transforming SD figurine with limited articulation from the "Robot Heroes" line, in a two pack with G1 Megatron. He may be the sassiest bitch on Cybertron.

Manga

The Transformer
Transformer: Big War
Scramble City (Japan-only)
Voice actor: Banjō Ginga (Japan)

:For further elaboration, see Who is Dion?.
Generation 1
* Ultra Magnus (1986, 2000, 2002)

* Laser Ultra Magnus (2006)

Masterpiece
* Ultra Magnus (2004)

* Ultra Magnus (2007)

:Hot Rod is an Autobot in the Generation 1 continuity family. He has also been known as Rodimus Prime, Rodimus, and Rodimus Major.

Hot Rod is brash and headstrong, with an overwhelming self-confidence that borders on arrogance. Kup has assumed the role of mentor and advisor to the impetuous young Hot Rod, offering him wisdom and advice when he needs it (though Hot Rod rarely feels that he does, much to Kup's annoyance). Arcee, a female Autobot, also serves as a calming influence on Hot Rod, and tends to either worry about him when he is not around, or deride and tease him when he is. Their relationship is antagonistic, but friendly. Exactly how deep Hot Rod's feelings for Arcee might run is unknown, whether they be friendly, romantic, or otherwise.

In contrast, his Rodimus Prime persona - while still headstrong and stubborn - seems to suffer from a severe lack of confidence, often doubting his own decisions and expressing distress over his position as an Autobot leader. Of course, much of this comes from having immediately succeeded leadership from Optimus Prime— and let's face it, shoes-to-be-filled don't get much bigger than that.

One thing that both sides of this Autobot's identity have in common is their impatience - neither Hot Rod nor Rodimus Prime can stand to wait around when they could be doing something instead. He is also very self-reliant, rarely sending others to do anything when he could be doing it himself.

His Targetmaster partner is Firebolt.

Hot Rod was one of the many Autobots based in Autobot City, on Earth. He was close friends with the young human Daniel Witwicky, and seemed to have a reputation for being something of a trouble-maker, judging from a few of Kup's comments to him at the time. Realizing that the Decepticons were invading, Hot Rod opened fire on their stolen shuttle and exposed their ruse before Megatron could enter the city. Although this did give the rest of the Autobots time to begin transforming Autobot City and raising their defenses, it also left Hot Rod trapped outside with Kup and Daniel. After defeating the Decepticons Blitzwing and Shrapnel with some help from Kup, Hot Rod managed to find a way inside the fortress city and took part in its defense. During Optimus Prime's battle with Megatron, Hot Rod intervened in an attempt to help, but succeeded only in giving Megatron the chance he needed to mortally wound the Autobot leader.

After Prime's death, Autobot City was attacked again - by Galvatron. While escaping, Hot Rod and Kup (and the Dinobots) were separated from the rest of the Autobots and crashed on the planet Quintessa. There, Hot Rod met the Quintessons, an enemy who would haunt him for some time later. After escaping their sadistic trial and attempted execution (as well as meeting Wheelie), Hot Rod went on to the planet Junk, where he was just in time to stop Wreck-Gar from destroying the rest of the Autobot City refugees with a timely use of the Universal greeting. Together, they all traveled to Cybertron to stop Unicron before he could eat more than just its moons.

Inside of Unicron, Hot Rod was separated from the rest of his team when their ship crashed (something which happens to Hot Rod a lot). Alone, he found himself facing Galvatron in a battle to the death over the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Claiming the Matrix, Hot Rod evolved into "Rodimus Prime", an older, larger, and more powerful version of himself, and used the power of the Matrix to destroy both Galvatron and Unicron once and for all (supposedly).

Peace reigned on Cybertron for at least long enough to put up some of the more important buildings, and Rodimus Prime began to ease into his role as the new Autobot leader. When Ultra Magnus and Spike Witwicky were kidnapped during a peace celebration, it was Rodimus who spied on the Decepticons with Grimlock to determine if they were the ones who had done it. The way Rodimus had it figured, the Decepticons were usually behind everything anyway, so they seemed like a good enough place to start. After getting caught and severely beaten by the Decepticons (who were innocent of the kidnapping, but not really fans of his anyway), Rodimus was able to interface with the Matrix and learned about the origins of the Transformer race. He also learned that his old enemies, the Quintessons, were back and looking to destroy every Transformer in existence. Making things worse, Galvatron soon returned as well, and the war that everyone had assumed was safely over quickly started up again.

During this period, Rodimus Prime's greatest achievements both revolved around his predecessor, Optimus Prime. While fleeing from a Decepticon attack, Rodimus and several other Autobots took refuge in a massive Autobot crypt and discovered that their former leader seemed to have returned to life. Perhaps a little too trusting of Optimus (and possibly eager to relieve himself of the burden of leadership), Rodimus quickly passed the Matrix back to Optimus and, much to his glee, reverted back into Hot Rod. His happiness was short-lived, however, as Optimus was quickly revealed to be nothing more than a puppet of the Quintessons, sent to trick the Autobots into an ambush from which none of them would escape. With no other choice, Hot Rod was forced to do battle with Optimus Prime for the fate of the Autobots. Although their duel was clearly in the favour of the more powerful Optimus, Hot Rod was able to re-awaken the true spirit of his leader. Returning the Matrix to Rodimus, Optimus then piloted his ship into the heart of the ambush and sacrificed himself to save them all.

Or so it had seemed at the time. As was so often the case for Rodimus, things did not quite wrap up as tidily as he might have hoped. Far from being destroyed, Optimus had been retrieved by a team of human scientists who were hoping to use him (again) as a weapon against the Autobots - this time as the bearer of a malignant "Hate Plague" that would cause them to destroy each other. When he learned of this, Rodimus swiftly formed a rescue party and led them to retrieve Optimus' body so that their former leader could rest in peace. When all of the rest of the Autobots with him were exposed to the Hate Plague, only Rodimus was able to escape unharmed - and with the still uninfected body of Optimus. Returning to Autbot City, Rodimus ordered Sky-Lynx to find a Quintesson to repair Optimus, then risked his life to shut down Metroplex before the Plague could spread to it. Attacked by Ultra Magnus and Wreck-Gar in the process, he succumbed to the plague and became infected with hate. In order to stop the Plague, the resurrected Optimus had to defeat the crazed Rodimus and forcibly extract the Matrix from him, changing him back into Hot Rod once more. This time, as Optimus had decided to stick around, the change was somewhat more permanent. Somewhat.

"Rebirth" miniseries (America-only)
Even after losing his position as Autobot leader, Hot Rod was not the sort to rest on his laurels. Among other things, he was instrumental in championing the idea of human/Transformer binary bonding, a technique that later resulted in the Headmasters and Targetmasters. Hot Rod himself became one of the latter, bonding himself to a Nebulan named Firebolt.

The Transformer manga
Rodimus Prime faced numerous bizarre challenges within the pages of the Transformer manga. In one instance, Rodimus and his troops were taken under siege by a horde of Megatron clones calling themselves the Megatron Military. The Megatron Military made short work of Rodimus, leaving him to wonder how he could defeat a whole horde of the baddy, when Optimus Prime could barely deal with one. Rodimus eventually realized that Galvatron was secretly controlling the clones and singled him out. With Galvatron defeated, the Megatron Military ceased to function.

During another battle, he was forced to team with his arch-nemesis, Galvatron, to defeat the all-powerful Guiltar. Guiltar was a creation built by the Quintessons utilizing the powers of both Optimus Prime and Megatron. Together, Rodimus and Galvatron defeated their foe (who it turned was being controlled by the ghost of Starscream) and called off the truce.

After the events of "The Return of Optimus Prime", Hot Rod maintained a high-level position among the Autobots as well as a new sense of duty and responsibility. After Vector Sigma was under threat of explosion, Hot Rod raced all over Earth trying to find the Matrix, which was still being repaired after its confrontation with the Hate Plague. Hot Rod eventually found the Matrix in a hiding place on Earth and rushed it back to Cybertron. Racing down to Vector Sigma, he met up with Optimus Prime and the ghost of Alpha Trion. Alpha Trion repaired the Matrix fully and Hot Rod transformed back into Rodimus Prime. Together, Optimus and Rodimus fought side-by-side to defeat Galvatron and his goons. However, to save Vector Sigma, Optimus Prime sacrificed his life by merging with the super computer.

Rodimus became Autobot Supreme Commander once more and continued to lead the Autobots against the Decepticons. However, once again, Vector Sigma came under threat of destruction. However, he was unable to save it this time but managed to evacuate all of Cybertron before it was destroyed. In search of a new homeworld, Rodimus, Kup and Blurr left the planet. Arcee asked if she could go, too, but Rodimus made her stay behind because she's a girl, and girls can't do anything but stand around and worry and make coffee for the men.

In the concluding chapter of the Headmasters manga, issue number 8, Rodimus Prime returned from his journey in space. During his quest, he faced many dangers and hardships and learned a new admiration for the human race and the planet Earth. His trials also increased the power of the Matrix, which he had taken with him on his journey.
Rodimus would not appear again until Battlestars, where he was shown to have reverted back to Hot Rod and now been converted into a Micromaster. As a Micromaster, Hot Rod took up residence in Star Convoy's chest, boosting his Supreme Commander's power.

(Note: Hot Rod's Micromaster body leaves fans to believe that the new homeworld he went searching for ended up being the planet Micro, which was featured prominantly in Transformers Victory.)

(Note: Events from the UK-only comics are in italics, and are flippin' convoluted.)

When Fortress Maximus made the decision to leave Cybertron and its civil war behind and travel to a new, peaceful planet, he dispatched Hot Rod and Blurr to search for suitable worlds. The pair discovered the planet of Nebulos, but on their return trip to inform him, they ran afoul of some unpleasant aliens who captured Blurr and pursued Hot Rod through space. While fleeing, Hot Rod crossed paths with the Autobot war veteran, Kup, living a nomadic existence wandering through space at the time, and the youth's bravado re-ignited Kup's fighting spirit. After saving Hot Rod and helping him to rescue Blurr, Kup joined the pair in returning to Cybertron. Kup's Story!

Having delivered his report to Fortress Maximus, Hot Rod was among the contingent of Transformers who accompanied him to Nebulos. The Autobots' arrival on the planet immediately stirred civil unrest, however, which lead to the Decepticons being brought to the planet, and the war continuing on a smaller scale. Technological advancements developed during the conflict saw Nebulans being bio-engineered into partnerships with the Transformers - Hot Rod became a Targetmaster, and was bonded the Nebulan sharpshooter, Firebolt, who transformed into his gun. Eventually, the Autobots determined to move their war away from Nebulos, and followed a signal sent by Goldbug, recieved by Hot Rod, to the planet Earth. Brothers in Armor!!

Hot Rod's role in the war on Earth was, in contrast to his nature, a small, quiet one, as he served under Fortress Maximus, and then the resurrected Optimus Prime, with little to no notable actions performed for a prolonged period of time. Eventually, however, he began playing larger roles again when he turned the tide of battle with Pretender Starscream after he succeeded in injuring the villain, Skin Deep and made a particularly stupid move when he tried to snap Optimus Prime out of a funk by creating a mock threat with a Guardian Mark V battle droid. The robot proceeded to malfunction and truly endanger the Autobots, but Hot Rod's plan worked when Prime saved the day and defeated it. Yesterday's Heroes! He later participated in the battles against Thunderwing, All Fall Down Unicron (speeding into the conflict on a jet-sled), On the Edge of Extinction! and the Decepticon forces on the planet Klo. End of the Road!

Hot Rod rose to greater prominence in the alternate future timeline of Earth-120185. In 1990, he, Kup and Blurr were captured by Megatron; although rescued by a double-agent named Warmonger, Hot Rod was recaptured and bore witness first hand to Megatron's mercilessness when he executed Warmonger. Then, in 1991, he was part of a unit that escorted the captive Scorponok, only to lose the Decepticon leader when forced to defend a human settlement against an attack by the Air Strike Patrol. Aspects of Evil! In 2003, he and Blurr were given "Ark duty," assigned to stand guard over the Autobots' spaceship while construction on Autobot City began. Kup was apparently instructed to deliver the plans of the city to the American government, and when Hot Rod saw him being jumped by the Stunticons, he disobeyed orders and sped out to the rescue, only to find that the tape had been a dummy. Ark Duty When the city was completed in 2004, Shockwave attacked it on its opening day, and Hot Rod repelled him by attacking in a wildly illogical manner, tackling him down a mountain repeatedly. Aspects of Evil!

In the year 2006, when the new Decepticon leader Galvatron travelled back in time to 1986 as part of a plan to free himself from the control of Unicron, the chaos-bringer used his mental powers to plan knowledge of Galvatron's plan into Hot Rod, Kup and Blurr's minds and transported them to Cybertron, where they used Galvatron's equipment to follow him into the past. There, with help from the present-day incarnation of Ultra Magnus, they were able to convince Galvatron that he had, in fact, traveled back in time to a parallel universe, where his actions would have no effect on the future. Believing this, Galvatron returned to his own time, and after setting any remaining wrongs to right, the trio of Autobots also returned to 2006. Target 2006 Back in his native timeline, Hot Rod was subsequently involved in a battle with Galvatron inside Unicron's body, during which he opened the sacred Autobot talisman, the Creation Matrix, and was transformed into Rodimus Prime. With this new strength, he hurled Galvatron through Unicron's hide and opened the Matrix, destroying the planet-eater. The Transformers: The Movie

As the new Autobot leader, Rodimus re-established Autobot control of Cybertron, and proved to be a fairly ruthless leader when it came to dispensing mercy. When Galvatron did not reappear, however, he grew concerned, and rashly placed a bounty on the Decepticons' head. What Rodimus did not realize, however, was that Galvatron had time-jumped again, traveling back to 1987. Wanted - Galvatron Dead or Alive In 2007, when the freelance peace-keeping agent Death's Head pursued Galvatron back to the 80s, Rodimus was informed of this fact by an Autobot double-agent named Nautilus, and, dismayed at the danger he had unleashed on the past, promptly headed back in time himself to stop the dual threats. Burning Sky! Once again teaming up with the present-day Ultra Magnus, Rodimus and his team tracked Galvatron down to Mount Verona, where he was attempting to harness the volcano's molten energy. While arguing with Death's Head, Rodimus and the bounty hunter were both attacked, but when Ultra Magnus opened fire on his power siphon, Galvatron was distracted long enough for Rodimus to escape. Hunters! Rodimus then arranged a plan that saw the Autobots capture Galvatron's time-jump mechanism, in order to have Wreck-Gar re-engineer it to return all the time-travelers to their point of origin. Rodimus engaged Galvatron in a protracted battle to buy Wreck-Gar time, but when the device was activated, Rodimus, Death's Head and the other Autobots were returned to 2007 - but Galvatron was left behind. Fire on High!

Some time later, a disgruntled Death's Head accepted a contract from the Decepticons on Rodimus Prime's head, and ambushed him while he was inspecting Autobot lines. Their battle subsequently went underground, where Cyclonus and Scourge intervened, downing Death's Head in hopes of being the ones to defeat Rodimus, in order to reclaim their lost standing in the Decepticons ranks. Rodimus was able to lead Death's Head through the underground tunnels, right into the heart of the Autobot camp, where he offered him advance payment for a different contract - on Cyclonus and Scourge. Headhunt Death's Head proceeded to track the two Decepticons for the remainder of the year, until the three of them fell under the mental control of Unicron when they discovered his disembodied head on the planet of Junk in the early days of 2008. Under his control, they assassinated Decepticon leader Shockwave and reignited the stalemated Cybertronian civil war in order to keep the Autobots busy while Unicron worked on rebuilding his body. Rodimus, however, learned of the situation thanks to Smokescreen, and lead a small Autobot force to Junk, where Death's Head fought against Unicron's control long enough to project Rodimus's mind into a battle with the demi-god on the astral plane. During the battle, explosives planted by Wreck-Gar destroy Unicron's head, and his mind is sealed within the Matrix. The Legacy of Unicron!

Later in 2008, the alien Quintessons targeted Cybertron for colonization, and attacked the Autobots with a two-pronged assault on both Cybertron and Earth. When Arcee shirked her guard duty at Autobot City, the Quintessons were given an opening that allowed them to take over the city, and when she returned, they gunned her down as bait for a trap for Rodimus Prime. Arriving at the city, Rodimus discovered the injured Arcee and opened his chest compartment to heal her with the Matrix, only to have it yanked from his grasp by the Quintesson general, Ghyrik, causing him to revert to Hot Rod. Liberating Blaster's cassettes for back-up, Hot Rod and Arcee proceeded to fight their way through the Quintessons to Autobot City's control room, where Hot Rod activated Metroplex to smash the alien threat. In battle with Ghyrik, Hot Rod duped the Quintessons with a bit of amateur ventrioloquism and reclaimed the Matrix; transformed back into Rodimus Prime again, he routed the Quintessons. Space Pirates!

Unbeknowst to Rodimus, the Quintessons had sought to colonise Cybertron because their own homeworld was being destroyed by a rift in space and time caused by the Transformers' repeated time-travel. The rift continued to grow in size until it threatened both Earth and Cybertron at the beginning of both 2009 and 1989. To put an end to the threat, Rodimus and a squad of Autobots travelled back to 1989, only to wind up mass-displacing Optimus Prime (since the Matrix could not exist in two time periods at once) and a group of other Autobots to limbo, leading to a brief violent misunderstanding with the present-day Autobots. Optimus Prime was able to stabilise the situation by communicating with all involved through the power of the Matrix. Subsequently, Autobots and Decepticons from both the present and future teamed up to battle Galvatron and Megatron, but one by one they fell, until Optimus Prime used the Matrix to return himself to reality for a final showdown. After absorbing Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge, however, the rift was sealed by Shockwave, and Rodimus and the other future Autobots returned to 2009, vowing to destroy their time machines to prevent this ever happening again. Time Wars

As it transpired, however, things would not be that easy. In the wake of the massive chronal damage caused by the rift, time had attempted to heal its wounds, but reality was no longer as it had been. The future that Rodimus and the other Autobots came from no longer existed - in its place was a world where Galvatron had never travelled back in time, and had conquered Cybertron after Unicron's destruction. Rodimus quickly established a rebellion, but when Galvatron tracked down their headquarters, he goaded Rodimus into a ferocious battle in hopes of corrupting the Matrix within him. Rodimus realised what he was doing, however, and ended the fight before more damage could be done. Aspects of Evil!

At the beginning of 2010, Rodimus and the Autobots escaped to Earth via hyperspace, only to find that their craft's guidance systems had been damaged. During the flight, Rodimus Prime vanished The Void!, and Kup discovered that he was the saboteur, Edge of Impact deducing that he had been corrupted by an evil force from within the Matrix. Shadow of Evil Inside the Matrix, Rodimus battled with the essence of Unicron, trapped there since the events of 2008, until Kup wrenched the Matrix from his chest, freeing from the chaos-bringer's influence. But now, Rodimus knew that the evil of Unicron will be waiting for him within it... White Fire and later that year, Unicron's essence succeeded in taking over Rodimus's body, transforming it into a duplicate of his own and attacking Cybertron once more, until Rodimus was able to defeat him from within and re-seal him within the Matrix. Aspects of Evil!

Centuries later, in the year 2356, Rodimus, his body withered and weakened from the continuous harmful influence of Unicron from within the Matrix, lectured a young Autobot student on the nature of evil, unwittingly setting the youth on the path towards villainy himself. Aspects of Evil!

In an unidentified timeline in the year 2510, a healthy Rodimus Prime was overjoyed to announce that the Cybertronian war was finally over, and planned to step down as leader to allow Springer to take over. The sole remaining Decepticon, a double-agent named Triton, spoke out against the decision to cause dissention, and succeeded - as Rodimus could only watch in dismay, arguments escalated into conflict, and the war was born again as Autobot fought Autobot. Peace

Additonally, in one futher alternate future timeline - a world in which Unicron succeeded in consuming Cybertron - Rodimus led the Autobot/human defense of Earth when that timeline's Galvatron attacked and eventually conquered it. Rodimus perished during the conflict, and his body was strung up between the ruined towers of the World Trade Center. In the year 2009, Galvatron returned to Manhatten to survey its devastated landscape, and fired upon Rodimus's corpse, demanding to know how many times he would have to kill him to erase his legacy. Rhythms of Darkness!
Generation 2
Dreamwave comics continuity
Hot Rod joined an underground Autobot cell led by Kup after Shockwave's takeover of Cybertron. Among the members of the cell was Arcee, who Hot Rod became attached to.

From the Wastelands, Hot Rod, Blurr, and Springer observed an incoming Decepticon shuttle carrying the Dinobots. Shortly afterwards, the cell rescued Optimus Prime from Runamuck and Runabout, and took him to their base. After awakening, Prime attacked Gnaw, Blurr, and Wheelie, forcing Hot Rod (who didn't recognize him) to hold him at gunpoint. After being admonished by Kup, Hot Rod apologized.

After Shockwave unleashed the Guardian Robots on Iacon, Prime organized the resistance cell and other Autobot forces on the planet in an assault on Shockwave's citadel. Fighting alongside the Autobot leader, Hot Rod was amazed that the stories Kup had told him about Prime's courage and heroism had all been true. As an injured Prime breached the citadel, Hot Rod, Ironhide and Springer provided cover fire, taking down a number of Guardians in the process. Along with the rest of Iacon, they witnessed the divine light of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership when Shockwave activated it.

As Prime and Ultra Magnus battled Shockwave within the citadel, Hot Rod and Grimlock took down Astrotrain and Blitzwing. Immediately afterwards, they were confronted with the looming threat of a remaining Guardian Robot - a threat that was soon neutralized by the arrival of the Wreckers, the Autobot High Council, and Defensor. The unified Autobot group soon breached the citadel.

Some time later, Hot Rod ran a simulation combat scenario against Kup, and won using tactics that, in Kup's opinion, would have killed them both had it been real. Only after his victory did Hot Rod remember that he'd promised to take Arcee to see an Earth-bound shuttle launch - a duty Springer was happy to relieve him of. Soon afterwards, he was assigned to perimeter guard duty at Autobase with Gnaw and Wheelie, separating him from Arcee.

Universe: The Wreckers
A few months after the destruction of Unicron in 2005, Rodimus Prime spearheaded an effort to establish multiple recon posts to watch for advancing threats... even though some of his scientists said he shouldn't. When only two of the five launched ships were ever heard from again, Rodimus felt like a schmuck. Guy can't catch a break. Betrayal

After the Great Wars ended and the Pax Cybertronia was signed, he changed his name to simply "Rodimus" and decided to check out the new "Maximal upgrade". His relationship with Arcee effectively ended shortly after, as the latter went through dark gripping emo depression over the death of Daniel Witwicky and vanished.

Rodimus joined the Wreckers at some undetermined point afterwards. After Megatron took over Cybertron with his Vehicon drones, Wrecker leader Apelinq got stranded on prehistoric Earth, leaving Rodimus in charge. True to form, he ditched leadership duties to Primal Prime as soon as possible.

After Primal Prime got his marching orders from the Oracle, he met Rodimus deep inside Cybertron's caverns, where an even more gothy-emo Arcee --in a new Maximal body-- lurked and stewed in her depression. Realizing he couldn't convince her to give a damn about anything, he left, rejoining the main Wrecker force in battle. Making it onto an ancient Autobot shuttle, the Wreckers blasted off.... with late-arrival Arcee. Departure

Rodimus recognized the homing beacon emitting from Archa Nine as one of those missing exploration parties mentioned before. When the shuttle landed, Rodimus stayed behind to help repair the damage the ship had suffered. The entire Wrecker team later gathered in an Akalouthan village, where Rodimus was reuinted with Glyph, who took them to see the artifact known as the Divine Light. The Wreckers' analysis of the item was cut short, as it was stolen by the traitor Cyclonus. Rodimus saw the back-in-his-old-body Devcon off, who was sent to chase after Cyclonus, while the Wreckers made for their next destination... even though several of them were now leery of the visions Primal Prime had been getting. Because they've really done so well by the Wreckers so far. Betrayal

Upon landing on the frozen planet, Rodimus was part of the search party immediately dispatched to look for... something. Primal Prime wasn't too sepcific. They came across Al-Badur, an exiled Quintesson, who gave them a little history lesson. They were then promptly attacked by a school of Sharkticons, but the Wreckers made short work of them. they made their way back to the ship, with Al-Badur in tow, and made for their next destination... Disclosure

(Note: As the comic series ended prematurely here, it is unknown how things went. The Wreckers series was intended to end shortly afterwards and tie directly into the Universe comic, but it never happened.)
Hot Rod (in his Micromaster form) rescued Teletraan 15 from a strange mechanical monster, a Novaroid. Teletraan 15 noted that Hot Rod was considerably smaller than she remembered him.

Irked, Hot Rod laid the blame for the transwarp holes in space-time on 15. It was through these holes that this future/alternate version of Hot Rod and the Novaroid had arrived in Teletraan 15's time.

Things probably turned out all right from that point.
IDW comics continuity
Years ago, Hot Rod was put in charge of a mission to the planet Ki-Aleta to obtain a powerful artifact named the Magnificence so as to keep it out of the hands of the Decepticons. Though the mission started off smoothly enough, with Gizmo using a holomatter generator to distract the defense systems while the rest of the team went after the Magnificence. Unfortunately, everything that could go wrong did go wrong. First the generator malfunctioned, then Download tripped the security lasers around the Magnificence itself. Gizmo, Download, and Backbeat were destroyed by the security systems while Hot Rod and Dealer fled. Hot Rod, nearing the exit tunnels they had previously drilled, got a call from Dealer - he had been ambushed by a Decepticon attack squad and needed help. Unfortunately, Hot Rod had been given his own, top secret orders: the Magnificence was to be the top priority of the mission, and placed before all else. With a heavy heart, Hot Rod abandoned Dealer to his fate as he left Ki-Aleta with the Magnificence.

Years later, Hot Rod learned that Dealer had not died that day; he was being held prisoner at the Decepticon penal colony known as Styx. Hot Rod stealthily infiltrated the prison complex, using a holomatter generator to disguise himself as a guard and then short-circuiting the power grid to cause all the cell doors to unlock. During the chaos he snuck in, extracted Dealer, and took off while the Decepticons were busy getting the prisoners under control. Spotlight: Hot Rod

Recently, Hot Rod was called to Earth to aid the crew of the Ark-19 in procuring a Decepticon facsimile from a former Soviet state in eastern Europe. He and Hardhead went down to Earth from the Ark-32 against Nightbeat's wishes, and proceeded to join the battle unannounced. As Hardhead went to support the main battle, Hot Rod went after the facsimile... which lead to him colliding with Prowl as they both tried to stop the facsimile from letting himself get gunned down by Soviet soldiers. He succeeded in the end, but before he could return to his ship he was attacked by Thundercracker and Skywarp, unable to defend himself because he had to keep the facsimile alive. After returning to the Ark-32, he had to be put in a CR Chamber to recover. His injuries were in vain, as the facsimile melted during the bounce.

Kiss Players
Voice actors: Ryōtarō Okiayu (Japan)

Following the death of Optimus Prime and the defeat of Unicron, Hot Rod became Rodimus Prime, the new leader of the Autobots. However, when his defeat of Galvatron led to a calamitous disaster on Earth, he gave up the Matrix to Ultra Magnus, reverted to Hot Rod once more and returned to the human homeworld.

Damaged by the E.D.C.'s anti-electron field, Hot Rod fused with a Legion and was reformatted into a Ford GT body by a kiss from the former Earth Defense Command Kiss player Lǐ Shāo-Shāo. Now, partnered with the kung-fu mistress, he travels around Japan battling the E.D.C., Legion, and the resurrected Optimus Prime.

Hot Rod is cocky and confident in his speed and sharpshooting skills, and weathers his human partner's complaints that he's slacking off on his hand-to-hand combat training. He would much prefer to practice kissing, and the resulting fusion grants him Shāo's considerable martial arts skills as well as the ability to wield his firearms as tonfas. In return, he steals underwear for her.

He enjoys fishing and carries a customized rod that can be converted into a forearm-mounted weapon called the "Exhaust Eliminator". Shāo-Shāo doesn't like working with him after a fishing trip due to the smell, but she secretly wishes that he would take her with him anyway. Hot Rod is also suspicious of Optimus Prime, and claims that he is not the real Optimus, presumably because he still believes his former commander to be dead following the battle of Autobot City.

Hot Rod has the distinction of being the only known robot with a Kiss Player partner to have lips. This may contribute to Shāo's feelings of excitement when she kisses him, though the rest of the time she's a bit outraged that a robot would have the audacity to talk to her like a person.
* Hot Rod might be the Transformers character with the most names in the US. From "Hot Rod" to "Rodimus Prime", to "Rodimus Major" to just plain "Rodimus". Varieties of "Rodimus" appear to be how he will be for a while, as Hasbro appears to be unable to secure the trademark on "Hot Rod".

* Aside from the Energon namesake character, Hot Rod has also been homage'd twice (or possibly thrice depending on how you look at it) in the Unicron Trilogy. For Armada, the "Powerlinx" upgrade of Hot Shot was given a very Hot-Rod-inspired deco. In Cybertron, Takara made a redeco of Hot Shot (well, "Exillion") with Hot Rod deco as a DVD-pack-in exclusive. Hasbro then took this deco, altered it, and released it in the US line at mass retail as the new character Excellion.

Thank god.

Thank god.

Sergeant Epps and the other soldiers under Captain Lennox's command were returning to SOCCENT Forward Operations Base after some hard duty. When Lennox revealed that wanted to go home to see his baby girl more than anything else, Epps joined in with the men in teasing their commander. As night fell, a mysterious MH-53 helicopter arrived at the base, and after being surrounded by dozens of troops, it suddenly transformed into a giant robot which proceeded to attack the base. Epps ran and ordered other soldiers to ready combat stations as they were under attack. The giant robot narrowly misses crushing him as he used his digital recorder to take footage of the strange machine. Fellow soldier Figueroa saves Epps by firing a sabot round at the robot, which allowed Epps to escape. Epps links up with the rest of Lennox's team and the Captain's little buddy Mahfous and high-tails it out of the exploding base.

[[Image:Movie_LennoxEpps_backpockets.jpg|left|thumb|200px|10: LEFT CHEEK!
20: GOTO 10]]

The next morning, the survivors discussed the previous night's events, with Epps sharing with them the images he captured and the unnerving feeling that as he was recording the thing, it stared right back at him. Later that day, as they made their way to local boy Mahfous' villiage, Epps spots a giant metal spike coming out of the sand aimed at Lennox's back and began firing wildly into the sand. After Sergeant Donnelly is impaled and killed by the robotic scorpion, the rest of the men run for their lives to the cover of the villiage. Lennox managed to borrow a cell phone from Akram, Mahfous's father, and asks for Epps' wallet for a credit card to make the call. In between firing rounds from his rifle, Epps barked that it was in his back pocket, prompting Lennox to protest that he had ten back pockets. Epps loudly clarified his left cheek.

When contact when the Pentagon is established, Epps coordinates with the E-3 Sentry AWACS plane to give orders for the incoming A-10 Thunderbolt IIs of Strike Package Bravo, indicating the target area killbox one-alpha with orange flares and laser guidance markers. As the A-10s arrive to provide air support, he gave them clearance to fire by shouting, "Bring it!". When their weapons completely failed to dent Scorponok, Lennox suggested the biggest barrels the Air Force has: the 105 millimeter cannons of AC-130 Spectre gunship. This is signaled with a shout of "Bring the rain!", pounding Scorponok into the sand. As the dust settled, the scorpion got up and dived into the sand, but not before leaving part of its damaged tail behind.

In the aftermath of combat with Scorponok, Epps and the rest of Lennox's Spec Ops team are ordered home to American soil by Secretary of Defense John Keller, who had thought everyone at the SOCCENT base was massacred. They take the end of Scorponok's tail with them on the flight. Doing their own analysis of the piece of robot body, they discover that the Self-regenerating molecular armor doesn't regenerate where hit by sabot rounds, which Epps confirms is "something like" a 6000 degree magnesium burn. They call the Pentagon again, telling them all gunships have to be loaded with sabot rounds to fight these things.

Later, Epps and the team land at Nellis Air Force Base. Instead of being debriefed on site, a guy from Sector Seven grabs one of their bags and orders them to come with him. This is confusing, since Sector Seven doesn't exist.

Epps and the team are driven to Hoover Dam, where they stand around looking awesome in their fatigues as other people who know about the alien robots arrive. Everyone files inside Hoover Dam, where Sector Seven has been hiding the leader of the evil alien invaders and the All Spark for 80 years. Upon seeing a thick steel door with triple claw marks in it, Epps wants to know what the hell, was Freddy Krueger in here? A geek points out that Freddy Krueger got four claws, that was Wolverine! Shortly thereafter, a kid gets in a fight with Reggie Simmons of Sector Seven over whether or not to release the good alien robot who's been disguised as a Camaro. Lennox attempts to settle the argument by putting his sidearm to Simmons' forehead, and Epps backs up his Commanding Officer in the geometrically complex standoff that ensues. They win. Losing's not really an option for these guys.

While everyone's still inside Hoover Dam, the Decepticons attack, knocking out power. All communications are dead as the giant evil robot leader thaws out. After calling the Air Force with Morse code, the only thing left to do is get the All Spark to Mission City, where it can be hidden in the urban jungle until the military arrives to evacuate it by helicopter. Epps complains when handed a couple of very large shortwave radios that these are "Radio Shack dinosaur radios, won't be able to work more than 20 miles."

Later, making a stand in Mission City, Lennox and Epps say "Bring the rain!" again. Stuff gets brought. While the Air Force brings it, Epps and the rest of the team fight the Decepticon tank with all five of the good robots, which almost gets him killed. Luckily, that robot Camaro zips in on the back of a tow truck and saves him. Then he helps Lennox kill that helicopter who killed their comrades in Qatar.

IDW Transformers Movie Adaptation
Epps is in the same scenes as in the film, but he doesn't get any of his great lines. It can assumed this is because instead of Tyrese Gibson, the part of Epps is played by G.I. Joe figures Alex Milne had on his drawing desk.

Transformers: The Movie novel
Once again, he's in all the same scenes as in the film. This time he does bring his signature lines.
Wolverine, aka "Logan", is a diminutive military veteran cowboy from Canada who's famous for acting as a superhero. He is not Peter Cullen.

His fleshy, hairy human exterior seems to hide some sort of metallic infrastructure, which is not unheard of by Transformers. A mutant (no, not a Mutant... or that kind of mutant either), he has hyperadvanced healing abilities and incredibly acute senses.

He's also a completely unlikable asshole. Naturally, this means he is nigh-indestructible and completely unstoppable and just rules over everything.
Wolverine was one of the Avengers sent to investigate the conflict between Latveria and Symkaria caused by the Decepticons. After entering a dome structure, the Avengers are attacked by the building's defenses and Spider-Man gets kidnapped, which upsets Wolverine. When the Autobots arrived, Wolverine was confused by a talkin' truck. The only recourse was to attack the talkin' truck. Man and Machine, Part One
