Once ''[[Midgard]]'' was completed, Baranova discovered that the Triangle was the result of an undersea vent causing methane to bubble up and decided the best way to deal with it would be to drop an explosive into the vent and seal it. She knew the council would never approve of her plan, so she attempted it without consulting them, and the ''Midgard'' was caught in a methane eruption. The submersible crashed on a ledge in the trench, but with the lab's greenhouse and life support intact Baranova was able to survive.<br /> <br /> Some twenty-eight years later, [[Cody Burns]] found the recordings Baranova had made, instigating a mission by the Burns family and their [[Rescue Bot]]s to the trench beneath the Triangle.
