'''Starscream''' is easily as accomplished, powerful and deserving of leadership as Megatron. At least, that's what he thinks. Power-hungry and driven by jealousy, Starscream operates through three ideals: lying, manipulation and deception. And when all else fails, a bit of sabotage never goes astray. [[Megatron (Animated)|Wise bots]] are careful about turning their backs on Starscream, just in case it's the day he finally decides to shove in the knife.

Though not nearly as powerful as Megatron (despite what he thinks of himself), Starcream is by no means a wimp. His [[null-ray]]s can demolish large buildings, and he can fly around so fast that he can break free of [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet's]] magnetic powers.

He's very fond of villainous speeches. You ''really'' don't want to interrupt him in the middle of one of those.
:''Voice actor:'' [[Tom Kenny]] (English), [[Stefan Staudinger]] (German)

Like [[Starscream (disambiguation)|others of his kind]], Starscream seeks to betray [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]] and take over leadership of the Decepticons. This time, however, he's not afraid to plant bombs on his mighty leader. In the aftermath of the explosion, Starscream got so caught up in his own greatness that he didn't notice that his comrades abandoned him on a [[Nemesis (Animated)|ship]] hurtling towards an exploding space bridge.

[[Image:Starscreamseg.jpg|thumb|right|150px|You check in, but you don't check out.]]
Over the next fifty solar cycles, Starscream searched for the All Spark on his own, using the damaged ship as a base (and probably getting a few screws loose in his [[central processor]]). He later discovered that the [[All Spark (Animated)|All Spark]] was on Earth and adopted a jet fighter as an alternate mode to search for it. When he revealed himself to the Autobots, he quickly thrashed each of them individually. Starscream mocked them, apparently assuming that the Autobots thought ''they'' had really defeated Megatron (whom he referred to as "the great Megatron" without sarcasm, so he seems to have at least a loathing respect for his leader's power). All too boastful of his cunning, Starscream boldly admitted that Megatron was already defeated by the bomb which Starscream himself had put on him. Despite being more powerful than the Autobots, Starscream failed to take the All Spark, partially because he [[Megatron (BW)|spent too much time gloating]]. [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]] grabbed Starscream in midair, and they opened the All Spark, releasing a massive wave of energy. Optimus was killed by the energy surge and subsequent fall (he got better), but Starscream's fate was unspecified. {{storylink|Transform and Roll Out!}}

After Megatron woke up, he found a tape of Starscream's confession and watched it. His reaction was typical: [[The Transformers: The Movie|"STAAAAARSCREEEEAM!"]] {{storylink|Home Is Where the Spark Is}}

It turns out Starscream had been hiding on Earth this whole time, until he decided to reveal himself to a badly damaged Blitzwing and Lugnut, offering them help in exchange for their loyalty. It also seems that for his skill he never mastered parallel-parking, as evidenced by the wreckage of the ''Nemesis'' on Earth's moon. {{Storylink|Lost and Found (Animated episode)|Lost and Found}}

[[Image:Megatron rising 1 Starscream freakout.jpg|thumb|left|150px|"Do you have any idea how long I spent preparing that speech!?"]]
After repairing Lugnut and Blitzwing, Starscream continually had to reassert his authority over the two walking malfunctions. As Lugnut went prostrate with praise, Starscream was initially quite flattered by the hulking Decepticon's obsequity, but quickly learned that the big guy was being manipulated by an outside source. Tracking the transmission, he came to Sumdac Tower and was quite surprised to find the disembodied head of his former leader. Beginning the smug monologue to end all smug monologues, he was interrupted by the senseless heroics of the Autobot Bumblebee. Focusing his attentions on the yellow little squirt, he mistakenly assumed that Megatron was helpless, an oversight that allowed the galactic despot to control the lab's machinery and defenestrate the traitor. Even so Starscream remained fixated on Bumblebee, and thus was caught unaware when the repaired form of Megatron burst from the tower roof. {{storylink|Megatron Rising - Part 1}}

{{spoiler|Megatron Rising - Part 2}}

Starscream watched with interest as Megatron trashed the Autobots, tossing Bumblebee around absentmindedly. As Megatron called his loyal decepticons out, Starscream gracefully landed on Lugnut's head, ready to return to his position as second-in-command. Megatron prepared to fire on the Autobots- but quickly lashed out and rammed the Allspark Key into Starscream's chest, seemingly offlining the Seeker, and he crumpled to the floor. {{storylink|Megatron Rising - Part 2}}

About time, huh.

His fans need not cry, though. Despite his apparent death at the hands of Megatron he will apparently be returning in an upcoming episode entitled [[A Fistful of Energon]] & possibly sooner.
==Summary==
[[Image:MegaPrime.JPG|right|thumb|200px|Oh, it is so on.]]
As Megatron descends to ground level, Optimus, Prowl and Bulkhead look on in disbelief. As he lands, Bulkhead takes point, launching his wrecking ball, but Megatron calmly slices it off, before backhanding Bulkhead into a nearby building. Prowl then attacks, but his throwing stars are easily deflected, and he finds himself on the defensive, dodging Megatron's swords. Taking cover behind a bridge support, he manages to avoid them, but Megatron's attacks destroy it, and two children are nearly crushed under the falling rubble, saved only by Optimus borrowing "a move from the Bumblebee play book", using a combination of his wheels and ax to dash forward and snatch the children up. Meanwhile Prowl is pinned under Megatron's foot, who draws a sword, ready to take revenge for Prowl slicing off the remains of his arm fifty years ago. Optimus saves him by using a combination of his grappler and his ax to knock the sword from Megatron's grasp. The two leaders face off, but Megatron simply blocks Prime's blow, and kicks him away. As he reaches for his dropped sword, Optimus launches a grappler, tripping him. Megatron follows up by snapping the grappler's line, and using it to swing Optimus into the side of a building.

In the tower, Blitzwing wants to join the fight, but Lugnut won't allow him to interfere in Megatron's business. As the two Decepticons argue, Dr. Sumdac tries to make a break for it, only to be blocked by Blitzwing. Meanwhile Starscream holds a struggling Bumblebee while watching Optimus and Megatron battle, trying to decide who he gains more from by helping, the Autobot or his would-be leader? On the ground, Optimus is taking a beating but says he will never reveal the AllSpark's location. Unfortunately Megatron simply plans to use the key to track down the AllSpark.
==Other notes==

===Continuity errors===
* At the beginning of the series, years were measured as solar cycles to Transformers, but Megatron refers to years as stellar cycles.
* Megatron said that Prowl slashed off his arm, wile he actually lost it due to Starscream who planted a bomb on Megatron's back. Prowl ''did'', however, slash a part off that remained after the explosion.

===Animation errors===
*When Ratchet catches Sari after Blackarachnia drops her, his right arm is intact. In the next scene, it's gone again.

* When Blitzwing changes faces after Megatron coldcocks Starscream, his face rotates vertically, not horizontally as it usually does.
*The black lanyard attached to Sari's [[Sari Sumdac's Key|key]] keeps disappearing and reappearing.
[[Image:Longtoothwhoselifeforce.jpg|left|thumb|250px|An unsightly gap in his front teeth.]]''Millions of years ago on Cybertron, Longtooth was one of the few survivors of a massive Decepticon offensive against the Autobots. Shellshocked, he clung to one of his dying troopmates, begging the Autobot not to die and leave him alone. At that moment, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] came out of the smoke and commended Longtooth on his fighting spirit and dedication to his fellow Autobot. He removed a small portion of Matrix-force from his chest and gave it to Longtooth, to heal the fallen robot's injuries. Instead, to his eternal shame, Longtooth pocketed it for himself. Though his wounded companion survived, Longtooth kept the Matrix shard and carried it as a good luck charm into battle from then on. Though still afraid of dying, Longtooth found his guilt a more powerful motivator than fear and daringly charged headfirst into every battle afterwards. When he heard how Optimus Prime lost the Matrix, Longtooth finally gave up his "lucky charm" and sent it in a message buoy back to the ''[[Ark]]'' and to Prime. {{Storylink|Whose Lifeforce is it Anyway?}}''
During the investigation, the creature ate Longtooth's leg, which drove him to madness. He then maniacally hunted for the creature, putting a peg in place of his lost leg. As [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]]'s Decepticons battled the Autobots overhead, hoping to learn the secret behind the Klud's mysterious resurrection, Pincher managed to talk him into letting the creature live. : Longtooth's inner robot transforms into an amphibious transport vehicle of fictional design, although most of the vehicle mode's mass is composed of a removable "backpack" part. His shell represents a humanoid walrus with an electronic eye. Longtooth's shell is only one which is not a human among normal Autobot Pretenders. The Pretender shell uses the Ionic Field Generator while the inner robot uses the plasma cannon.
'''''The Transformers: Devastation''''' is a 6-issue comic-book mini-series published by [[IDW Publishing]] in 2007/2008, and set in the main [[IDW continuity]]. It directly follows ''[[Escalation|The Transformers: Escalation]]'', and ramps up the action even further for the [[Generation 1]] Transformers. As the [[Autobot]]s discover that the [[human]]s are aware of the location of their base, [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] summons [[Sixshot]] to Earth to hasten its... well, devastation!

Surprisingly, inspite of the title, the [[Constructicons]] don't appear anywhere in this series.

{{-}}
==Overview==
After discovering that their position has been compromised, the [[Autobot]]s plan to move the ''[[Ark-19]]'' to the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately they are intercepted by Sixshot, who has been ordered by Megatron to terminate the Autobots. Sixshot disables the ''Ark-19'' and the Autobots are forced to make a crash landing into the closest shoreline, ejecting an escape pod containing [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]], [[Verity Carlo|Verity]] and [[Jimmy Pink|Jimmy]]. The ship's data is sent to the ''[[Ark-32]]'' before it self-destructs in the ocean. Sixshot is convinced that the Autobots are destroyed and tracks Ratchet to finish his task. After chasing him around a bit to the ocean's edge, he's about deliver the final blow when the other Autobots emerge and give him battle. Nightbeat manages to bounce the Autobots back to the ''Ark-32'' before they are destroyed by an air attack. Sixshot leaves to deal with trouble at Decepticon headquarters.

Meanwhile, the other [[Decepticon]]s are upset that Megatron has ruined their efforts at infiltration by bringing in Sixshot, so [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]] awaken [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], who is being repaired in a [[CR chamber]] after being blasted by Megatron in ''[[Infiltration]]''. Starscream awakens as the Reapers attack and rejoins the Decepticon cause, though he still has his own agenda. When the Reapers try to recruit Sixshot as before, he refuses until his rival Starscream taunts him. As he moves to attack, Starscream utters Sixshot's shutdown code, causing him to crash.

Prior to the attack on the ''Ark-19'', [[Hot Rod]] and [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] embarked on a mission to rescue [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], who was seriously injured in an explosion. {{storylink|Escalation issue 6}} On route, they are forced to deal with a gang of [[Sunstreaker]] clones whom they discover are actually [[Headmaster]]s, controlled by the [[Machination]]. At the Machination's headquarters, [[Hunter O'Nion|Hunter]], a Headmaster himself, sneaks around and discovers the real Sunstreaker's detached head. Although initially wishing to die, Sunstreaker agrees to help Hunter fully become a Headmaster so he can help the Autobots. They complete the process just in time to avoid destruction by the Machination's leader [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], now a Headmaster himself with the help of Mister [[Dante]]. Hunter/Sunstreaker escape the facility.

Two sinister external forces have their eyes on Earth. The [[Reapers]] have been observing since their encounter with Sixshot and determine that Earth must be destroyed. They start with Decepticon headquarters. Observing this from the [[Dead Universe]] is Nemesis Prime (the former [[Nova Prime]]) and [[Jhiaxus]] who have plans for Earth and send [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] to bring things under control. He does by making the lead Reaper destroy his brethren, thinning out the lot until the Decepticons get the edge to finish the job. The [[Battlecharger]]s are casualties, and the Decepticons now have to deal with the human military.

Meanwhile, [[Skywatch]] has reprogrammed [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] and [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] with plans to use them to track down the other Transformers. Their efforts are hampered by [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]], who recently came back online. They plan to activate [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] instead.

Upon urging from [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]], [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] agrees for [[Hound (G1)|Hound]]'s unit travel to [[Earth]] and assigns [[Jetfire (G1)|Jetfire]] to supervise the decommissioning of [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]]'s base. Later however, an incident on [[Garrus-9]] {{storylink|Spotlight: Arcee}} requires Prime's team to evacuate the Earth and also divert Hound's team to deal with the crisis.

==Creative team==
The creative team from ''[[Infiltration]]'' and ''Escalation'' (writer [[Simon Furman]] and penciller [[E. J. Su]]) reunited for the bulk of ''Devastation''. However Su's paternity leave meant he was unable to pencil the entire arc. [[Nick Roche]] took over for issue 3, with [[Robby Musso]] working on issue 4. Su returned for issues 5 and 6.
Sapient alien robots and humans can be friends, once they are able to communicate with each other. There is no reason this should not be, if we are to assume the existence of sapient alien robots; beings with the ability to reflect on "life, the universe, and everything" would have a lot in common.
One definite lack of commonality, however, is the ability to [[Reproduction|reproduce]] together. Metal robots and flesh creatures just can't have babies, no matter how hard they try. The physiology is simply not compatible. (Several authoritative works have been written on relevant aspects of human biology. Readers are advised to seek them out for further reference.) Since the urge to engage in sex is often a major contributor to romantic interest, it may seem unusual for this attraction to exist between a robot and a fleshling -- and yet, throughout Transformers fiction, such examples do exist.

To write them off as silly plot contrivances is easy. It is, however, also easy to write off large sections of the fiction as silly contrivances, which leads us down a dangerous path. Therefore we must assume that, impractical and absurd as it may be, these incompatible species must be similar enough mentally to make romantic attraction, even in the absence of sexual compatibility, possible.
A list of notable Transformer-fleshling pairs where an inter-species romance was either hinted at or outright stated, is given below.
The 2006 [[Takara]] radio-drama/toyline [[Kiss Players]] introduced a whole line of Transformer/human pairings (that were somehow even ''more'' disturbing).
The fact that all of these pairings are between nominally-male robots and apparently-female fleshlings can in part be blamed on the scarcity of [[female Transformers]].
There's only one thing Autobots and Decepticons both agree on with no war or argument, and it's this: '''Blot''' is the most vile and disgusting Transformer ever assembled. He oozes fluids of questionable nature from various joints on his frame, and has a rank odor that usually keeps foes and allies far away from him. Naturally, all this scorn and insult has given the less-than-smart Blot quite the inferiority complex. Stuck with a hygiene problem he can't control and a central processor a few bytes too small, Blot is both unable to solve the problems of his own stench and talk back to the insulting comments from his peers. Brutish and slow-witted, Blot is the classic dumb bully to those who don't give him respect...although he's not sharp enough to tell when said respect is faked. He's immensely loyal to those who at very least pretend he's worth something, and [[Hun-Gurrr]] in particular is a Decepticon to whom he shows unwavering support.

The other [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]], on the other hand, tolerate Blot enough, but are apprehensive about combining into [[Abominus]] with him, as it takes far too long to remove the stench he's passed on to them after they're finished.
In katakana, "butt" is usually rendered バット, batto, while "boot" is ブート, buuto. It is equal parts possible that "butto" is a misspelling (intentional or otherwise), an alternate transliteration for "butt", or that it's "Bhutto", the name of a Sindhi tribe that resides in Pakistan.</ref>
====Marvel UK future timelines====

''In 2007, Blot was sent to the freelance peacekeeping agent known as [[Death's Head]] as an emissary for the Decepticon army. Death's Head had sought a bounty against [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] months earlier, only to have the offeror, [[Rodimus Prime]], interfere with the collection and rescind the offer. Blot proposed the mechanoid use Decepticon resources to enter Cybertron undetected and track Rodimus Prime's predicted movements to get his revenge. Death's Head was unconvinced by this appeal to his sense of pride, so then Blot appealed to his wallet and instantly the mech was interested in the deal. {{storylink|Headhunt}}''

''Frothing at the mouth (and the neck, and the ankle joints, and...), Blot enjoyed terrorizing the human population on 2009 while on his way to the latest [[energon]] extraction site the Decepticons had rigged up. Unfortunately for them, [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and the Terrorcons proved incapable of fending off an Autobot strike team, who quickly destroyed their laboriously assembled drill. Seeking revenge, Blot and the others chased their foes back to [[Autobot City]], only to end up passing through a [[trans-time dimensional portal]] and getting caught up in fighting for the fate of the universe. It seems the former 21st century Decepticon leader Galvatron had been active in the 20th century for too long, causing a timestorm which threatened both ends of the timeline, at 1989 and 2009.''

''Soundwave ostensibly agreed to help their 20th century counterparts, but in reality kept Blot and the other Terrorcons in reserve, hoping the other various factions present would do the heavy lifting for them. In the end, Soundwave and the 2009 Terrorcons chose the better part of valor and fled back to their home time rather than face the fighting mad Galvatron. {{storylink|Time Wars}}''

===Cartoon continuity===
====American cartoon====
:''Voice actor:'' [[Tony St. James]] (US), ? (Japan)
Blot's first appearance was with his fellow Terrorcons inside Unicron's head. Galvatron used them to blast into Unicron so he could retrieve more anti-electrons for an attack against the Autobots. Blot and the others did a decent job in keeping the Autobots at bay, but were quickly forced into retreating when Grimlock finished building the Technobots and gave them the ability to merge into Computron. {{storylink|Grimlock's New Brain}}

Later, the Terrorcons were seen under the service of the [[Quintesson]]s. [[Dirk Manus]] had sold the Quintessons a [[Recreator|Molecular Disassembler/Reassembler]]. Eager to test the device, they had Blot act as the volunteer. The test proved that the device not only disassembled and reassembled matter like the name implied, but also cured whatever it had been used on of all broken parts, maladies, and other flaws. Cured of his imperfections, Blot felt sick.

When Dirk and his Technobot escorts were on their way through space, Abominus swooped down and attacked, shooting them from the sky. The automatic timer in Abominus, placed within by the Quintessons, forced Abominus to separate into his Terrorcon components. The team was upset they couldn't finish the task of destroying the Autobots, though Blot and the team did get a second chance at going against Computron later. {{storylink|Money is Everything}}
====Japanese Headmasters cartoon====
===IDW comics continuity===
Blot was one of the earlier warriors seen in the bloodsport tournaments on [[Kaon]], part of Megatron's team as the future Decepticon leader rose in prominence. He remained part of the movement when the pit-fighting broke out into active terrorism, and was seen dismembering security officers with his extra arms just before [[Sentinel Prime]] returned with his [[Apex Bomber|Apex Armor]]. {{Storylink|Megatron Origin}}

In the present, he has joined with [[Hun-Gurrr]] and several others to form a squad called the Terrorcons, who are also major fanboys of [[Sixshot]]. They were deployed to [[Mumu-Obscura]], but were taken prisoner by the [[Reapers]] to lure Sixshot to the planet. The Reapers offered membership to their little club so long as Sixshot destroyed the Terrorcons, to which Blot offered no reaction whatsoever, nor did he react when Sixshot appeared to take the Reapers up on their offer. After Sixshot declined the invitation, the Reapers allowed the Decepticons to leave in peace. {{Storylink|Spotlight: Sixshot}}

:Blot transforms into a navy blue and lavender monster. What sort of monster is a hard factor to determine, as the details molded into him don't particularly point to any one creature. His shoulder span and long arms indicate something ape-like, while his pointed nose and sloped head give him an amphibian-like appearance (which, when taken together resemble a Deep One from the works of H.P. Lovecraft). Pretty much, if you say Blot looks like something, he has a decent chance of actually looking like it.

:Blot's monster mode is nicely poseable for the time, having hinge elbows and full swivel shoulders and hips. His head can also rise up a bit, but due to his unpainted eyes, the effect is negligible. In robot mode, his articulation is reduced to just a single joint per arm. His box art shows these to be his elbows, but from looking at just the toy, they could be his shoulders. Due to his broad monster mode width, Blot's small, square-peg head conspires against him and makes him look immensely out of proportion.

:He can form the leg or arm of any [[Scramble City]]-type combiner, though he is nominally Abominus's right leg. He can also attach to Metroplex's robot mode.

====Armada====
Over-Run came to this universe after his own was destroyed by [[Unicron]]. With him he brought the [[Mini-Con Matrix]], an artifact into which all the Mini-Cons of his universe had placed their spark essences. Upon arriving, he immediately set up a beacon which attracted the attention of [[Autobot|Autobots]] and [[Decepticon|Decepticons]] alike. [[Hot Shot (Armada)|Hot Shot]] and [[Mirage (Armada)|Mirage]] arrived first, but was shot down by [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]], who attempted to claim Over-Run for himself, seeing him merely as another Mini-Con to be used for battle and not realizing his origins. As Starscream bent over to capture him, though, he was attacked by [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], one of Unicron's heralds who had been sent to destroy Over-Run and the Matrix. Mirage, however, took advantage of Galvatron's distraction with Starscream and cloaked both himself and Over-Run. Believing his quarry to have eluded him, Galvatron left, and Over-Run was brought back to the Autobot base.

When Over-Run arrived, he learned that his appearance in this universe had shunted [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]] into his own. ====Armada====

Over-Run suggested using his inter-dimensional pod to retrieve him, but unfortunately it was now in the custody of the Decepticons. Megatron was cruel to the peaceful Mini-Con, delighting in his misery, and all Leader-1 could do was silently plot his escape.

Slowly, maliciously, a dark corner was being tugged at within Leader-1's mind, as he realized he enjoyed his growing love for domination and sadism. One day, he insists, he'll do away with Megatron once and for all, in the most humiliating and painful way possible. It will be a delicious irony.
Early in the search for the Mini-Cons scattered across [[Earth]], Megatron found a [[Mini-Con storage panel]] near the Decepticons' base on the [[Moon (planet)|Moon]]. He activated the panel and was pleased to see Leader-1 appear, as he was Megatron's personal Mini-Con from before their escape. Leader-1 punctuated Megatron's displeasure with an incredibly powerful laserblast from his chest.
{{storylink|Armada_%28Dreamwave_comic%29#Volume_1:_First_Contact|First Contact}}
Leader-1, head of [[Mini-Con Sector|Mini-Con village D10]], was one of the Mini-Cons whose entire village was captured by the Decepticons at the beginning of the war one million years ago. He managed to get a distress call sent to [[Hot Shot (Armada)|Hot Shot]], who then showed it to [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]]. When the Mini-Cons escaped from the Decepticon fortress, Leader-1 had the misfortune of being with Megatron at the time, and thus had to serve him for the next four million years.

{{storylink|Armada_%28Dreamwave_comic%29#Volume_2:_Fortress|Fortress}}This routine went uninterrupted for quite some time, until Leader-1 and the rest of the Mini-Cons on Earth were abducted by [[Dualor]] and the rest of the [[Destruction Mini-Con Team]] and taken to the Mini-Con fortress on the Moon. When the Decepticons assaulted the fortress, Leader-1 shot the Destruction Team in the back and took over the control room, immediately contacting Megatron and giving him directions through the fortress. Ultimately, it turned out that Leader-1 had plans of his own, as he led Megatron into a security chamber and sealed the doors, before turning all of the automated weapons on him. As he gloated about finally getting his revenge for millions of years of indignity, pain, suffering, and torment, Dualor came to and shot him. This brief interruption provided enough time for Megatron to escape and tear his way into the control room, recapturing Leader-1.

Leader-1 ultimately regained his freedom when Megatron released him and the other Decepticon-held Mini-Cons in order to battle [[Unicron]]. And, as Megatron was slowly, torturously, and systematically disassembled and destroyed by Unicron's internal defense systems, Leader-1 ended up having the last laugh.

*During the course of American dub of the ''[[Armada]]'' cartoon, several characters were mistakenly referred to as "Leader-1". [[Sparkplug (Armada)|Sparkplug]] in particular seemed to bear the Leader-1 brunt.

*An abandoned character concept for Leader-1 was revealed by the Hasbro team during their panel at OTFCC 2003. The idea was that Leader-1 would have been deranged, thinking of himself as being the dominant one in his Mini-Con/Bulk partnership, with Megatron actually being HIS minion. This, obviously, was not used.

:''Longrack is an [[Autobot]] in the [[Cybertron (franchise)|Cybertron]] portion of the [[Unicron Trilogy]].''

[[Image:CYB_longrack_boxart.JPG|thumb|250px|The Longrack of the Law]]

With the ongoing battles between the Autobots and [[Decepticons]] and the attacks by the evil [[Unicron]], [[Cybertron]] has suffered a lot of damage over the years. It's '''Longrack'''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s mission to repair this damage. Fixing the planet-wide destruction won't be easy, but Longrack is patient, he'll get it done.

While he prefers building, this doesn't mean he can't put up a fight. He'll take on any Decepticon that tries to interfere with his work and then finish them off with his Crushsteel Punch!
'''Prime begins to doubt his leadership abilities as the Decepticons mobilize for a big invasion of Earth.'''

==Summary==

[[Image:MegRisingBodyLab.jpg|left|thumb|This is what most of the [[die-cast]] toys from the 80s look like now.]]

[[Detroit]] is in the midst of a blizzard, and as Isaac Sumdac starts to repair Megatron's body he comments that they were fortunate to have found it beforehand, while at the same time praising it for being well-constructed enough to withstand 50 years of exposure to the elements. Megatron silently gloats that Cybertronian technology is more powerful than any force on Earth. The bad weather causes a blackout and forces [[Sumdac Tower]] onto its backup generator; when Sumdac decides this will force a delay in the repairs, Megatron alternates between bluster and sweet-talk to try to get his way, but it's no use. Megatron attempts to call Lugnut again for assistance.

Lugnut and Blitzwing have just finished rebuilding themselves (after some squabbling over the last piece) in a distant forest. Starscream mocks them for in-fighting and reminds them that he is their new chosen and sworn sovereign; his two subjects retort that they serve him only under threat, not by choice. At that moment, Megatron successfully contacts Lugnut, whose newly reverential and respectful attitude both pleases and confuses (''but mostly pleases'') Starscream. When Starscream finds out Lugnut "thinks" he's hearing Megatron, the new leader is infuriated, and in his anger almost exposes that fact that it was himself, and not the Autobots, who defeated Megatron in the first place. Megatron orders Lugnut to retrieve the [[Sari Sumdac's key|Key]] and bring it to him; Starscream then notices that, regardless of the source, Lugnut is indeed being contacted by someone. He orders Lugnut and Blitzwing to obey the strange orders for now, while he himself will track the transmissions to their source and see who is trying to undermine his authority.

As the Decepticons move out, the Autobots' HQ computer notices their increased activity. The Autobots are worried about a possible full-scale Decepticon invasion. As if Optimus Prime wasn't stressed enough, Bulkhead and Prowl then take the opportunity to finally tell him bout the continued survival of the [[Dinobot (Animated)|Dinobots]] on [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|Dinobot Island]]. Prime is furious that his orders were disobeyed, but decides that given the circumstances they should try to use all resources available--but insists that he will lead the new mission to contact the Dinobots.

Optimus Prime is especially worried about the Key, both because Sari can't protect it, and because she once again is using it as a toy (this time for model-plane dogfighting). When he orders her to turn it over, Sari angrily reminds him that she was chosen for this role by the [[All Spark (Animated)|AllSpark]] itself. Prime then orders Ratchet to magnetically take the key from her, and, reluctantly, Ratchet obeys. Sari feels heartbroken and betrayed, and flees the base. An upset Bumblebee defends Sari's role as part of the team, to which Optimus responds that since Bumblebee has been such a poor team performer who makes so many mistakes, he isn't a good character witness. Bumblebee retorts that the Autobots' desperate, seemingly hopeless situation means Optimus isn't a good leader--then he leaves in pursuit of Sari. Prime orders Ratchet to take the Key to the [[Ark (Animated)|Autobot spaceship]] beneath Lake Erie, and they all depart.

Sari walks down the street, dejected and pouting about how untrustworthy the Autobots turned out to be. But she's being watched--by Blackarachnia, who abducts the girl and mockingly praises her for seeing the light. Still hoping to cure herself of her techno-organic body, Blackarachnia attempts to bargain with Sari to hand over the key. They exchange "snappy banter" for a while, which leaves Blackarachnia bored. When Sari again mentions how the Autobots no longer trust her, Blackarachnia tells her more about her own sad past and how only the power of the AllSpark can give her back a normal life. Sari seems moved....

En route to the Autobot ship, Ratchet is ambushed by Blitzwing and Lugnut, in a battle about as one-sided as Bambi vs Godzilla. He seems to challenge Blitzwing to a battle to the finish--but the three-faced robot simply freezes Ratchet solid and cracks off his crystallized arm, taking the Key with it.

On Dinobot Island, the Autobots are confronted by the Dinobots who--again--are hostile to trespassers. Prime seemingly worsens the situation, as a stranger with a heavy-handed attitude. When their familiar protector Prowl reveals himself and tries to speak, the Dinobots calm down slightly (though Prime is further frustrated to learn the [[Meltdown (Animated)|extent of his troops' misadventures]] on Dinobot Island). But in the end, the Dinobots refuse to help against the Decepticons, saying they don't want to help any robots--they ''fight'' robots. Optimus points out that the Dinobots are robots themselves.... prompting them to begin fighting each other. When Ratchet calls and informs Prime of the key's theft, the Autobots to return to the mainland. Bulkhead asks what their next course of action is, and Prime admits he doesn't know, thinking that Bumblebee was right about Prime being unfit for command.

[[Image:Megatron rising 1 Starscream freakout.jpg|thumb|150px|Bumblebee violated rule number 37 of the good guy code: never interrupt the villain during the monologue.]]
Starscream traces the source of Lugnut's messages back to Sumdac Tower. Blasting his way in, he is shocked to find Megatron alive--but regains his composure at the sight of his former leader dismantled and helpless. The two have an elaborately deceptive conversation about loyalty: Megatron knows Starscream betrayed him, but Starscream doesn't know he knows and wants to [[Wikipedia:The Incredibles|"monologue"]] a bit before delivering the final blow. Meanwhile, Bumblebee's search for Sari led him to the tower; when he spots Starscream through the wrecked wall, he squeezes himself into an elevator and prepares for a one-on-one battle (after using the classic "cellphone interference" ploy to avoid talking to Optimus). Right when Starscream is finally about to finish Megatron off, Bumblebee charges in, stingers blasting wildly--striking Starscream at full force and causing no damage at all. Starscream effortlessly thrashes Bumblebee, more angry at having his monologue interrupted than anything else. During this diversion, Megatron activates some of the lab machinery, propelling both Starscream and Bumblebee out of the lab and onto the tower roof.

[[Image:MegRisingHeadKey.jpg|left|thumb|Cyber Key power!]]

Dr. Sumdac rushes in, hearing the disturbance. At first Megatron keeps up his usual act, warning that the Decepticons will be back soon and that he needs his new body immediately. The doctor agrees, trying to repair it as quickly as possible, while Megatron observes the rooftop action on a viewscreen and tries to electrocute Starscream through a spotlight. Lugnut and Blitzwing arrive, praising their leader, and finally it's time for the charade to end. Lugnut forces Sumdac to genuflect to Megatron, who in turn gloats at the sight and how easily he was able to lie to his captor. Blitzwing inserts the Key into Megatron's head; its power is now his to command. Megatron quickly (''and beautifully'') repairs himself, using metal from the lab as patch-up material when necessary; in the process he steals Sumdac away to an as-yet-undisclosed location.

[[Image:MegRisingGonnaKillYou.jpg|right|thumb|150px|Oh SHIT, what are we going to do now?]]
Up on the roof, Starscream is about to finish off Bumblebee, and down on the street the Autobots are just arriving to try to help, but all are reduced to staring in horror and disbelief as Megatron blasts up into the sky, an armored colossus.
'''Lugnut''': "Oh, Master, I am not worthy! I am not worthy{{m-}}...what happened to your body?"<br>
'''Crazy Blitzwing''': "...you had a ''head'' in your head!"
"And I hated every moment of that humiliating charade."
:{{m-}}'''Isaac Sumdac''' finally learns the truth, and from '''Megatron''' himself.

==Other notes==

===Continuity errors===
* Despite her initial sarcasm, Sari has apparently forgotten (or is willing to forget) how Blackarachnia's use of the All Spark key nearly killed Sari herself and all organic life for miles around. She also doesn't seem to mind being kidnapped onto a rooftop again. Lesson: Never betray a kid's trust; it makes them act '''really''' stupid.

* Not so much an error as just an oddity: When Starscream stands over a dangling Bumblebee on the Sumdac Tower rooftop, Megatron sends a power surge through a roof fixture and zaps Starscream. When the scene cuts back to the roof a few minutes later, Bumblebee's back on the roof, which he likely managed while Starscream was stunned, and Screamer's confronting him again. However, with no time given for them to talk or react about the transition, the previous roof scene may as well not have happened.

===Animation Errors===
* The [[scale|size of Megatron's head]] fluctuates greatly between scenes, often appearing gigantic even compared to large characters.
* When Sari is telling Blackarachnia about the Autobots taking away her key, her right leg is drawn awkwardly... almost as if it's growing out of her skirt.
* For a brief moment, right when Ratchet contacts Prime to inform him of his loss of the key, the ol' Bot's arm can be seen with the "missing EMP Generator hole" again, but it quickly disappears, then re-appears when he fights Blitzwing and Lugnut.
* Starscream's Decepticon insignia is occasionally upside-down.

===Transformers references===
* Prime finally refers to [[Dinobot Island]] by that name.

===Real-world references===
* Ratchet's remark to Blitzwing about prying the key from his cold, offline servo is a reference to an NRA slogan.
* The scene of Megatron's head reattaching to his body via a series of small pistons that join and then draw together is similar to the "repair" sequences in 1999's ''The Iron Giant''.

===Miscellaneous trivia===
* The Decepticon symbol on Megatron's body that was so clear [[Nature Calls|last episode]] is nowhere to be seen now. Of course, neither is the chestplate it resided on.
* The R/C Plane Sari was flying resembles a MiG-15 Fighter.
* This is the first episode in which we see an extended transformation sequence for Starscream.
* Grimlock says the Dinobots will destroy robots, and Prime points out that '''they're''' robots. When the Autobots then leave, it appears that this remark has caused the Dinobots to start attacking '''each other'''.
* When Megatron's energized body sends out cables to its detached hand, in which Prof. Sumdac is sitting, the hand grips around Sumdac, then is yanked under the flooring and over to the body, where it opens back up—with Sumdac no longer within it. (Nothing up Megatron's sleeve!)
* At one point during Starscream's transformation, he strongly resembles the Gerwalk mode of the [http://www.new-un-spacy.com/macrossplus/yf-19.htm YF-19 Veritech] from the anime ''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macross_Plus Macross Plus],'' one of the apparent influences for his alternate mode.
* Geez, Prime can be a major asshole.
* Looks like [[Grimlock (G1)|him Grimlock hate Optimus Prime]].

76.66.127.202: /* Toy scale vs. cartoon scale */

[[Image:OptimusSnakeEyes.jpg|right|thumb|300px|And the truck's ''how'' big...?]]
'''Scale''' in ''Transformers'' is, not to put too fine a point on it, screwed.

Virtually no era, franchise, fiction, [[toy|toyline]] or other incarnation of ''Transformers'' has presented scale in a logical or believable fashion. (The only exceptions are the 1:24 toys for ''[[Alternators]]'' and ''[[Kiss Players (toyline)|Kiss Players]]'', but they [[Atari Hitotonari|have their own problems]].) Most fans agree that one must either ignore it or accept it, lest they be tempted to explain these problems and in the process fanwank themselves into oblivion.

However, the scale problems of ''Transformers'' still merit description.

==Scale within toylines==
===Toys out of scale with others in the same line===
The early [[Generation 1 (toyline)|Generation 1 toyline]], especially the pre-[[The Transformers: The Movie|movie]] lines, were repackaged and [[redeco]]ed toys from several different Japanese toylines. The crucial point is that the toylines were initially unrelated. The characters ''should'' be in scale to each other as they all have real-world altmodes that (should) pass for real vehicles. However, since ''[[Diaclone]]'' toys were not part of the same line as ''[[Microman]]'' toys, scale issues arose. ''Diaclone'' figures such as [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] and [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] are more-or-less in correct scale to each other, but many of the [[Mini Vehicle]]s from the ''New Microman'' line are clearly far too small by comparison. Even aside from their deformed penny-racer proportions, a [[Bumblebee (G1)|Volkswagen]] Microman toy is disproportionately tiny when compared to a [[Jazz (G1)|Porsche]] Diaclone toy. The disparity becomes even more obvious with [[minibot]]s such as [[Warpath]] (a tank) and [[Seaspray]] (a hovercraft) who should be many times their actual size.

[[Image:DiacloneScale.jpg|left|thumb|350px|That little guy &mdash; who comes from the same toyline as all those vehicles &mdash; is supposed to be a normal-sized human. Yeeeah.]]

Another glaring scale problem comes in the form of the [[Seeker]]s, who turn into F-15 Eagles which, in real life, are 63.8′ (19.4m) long. Correctly scaled, this would make their robot modes ''colossal'' compared to most Autobots. Similarly, the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicon]]s, despite also coming from the ''Diaclone'' line, are too small. Far worse is the other ''Diaclone'' combiner team, the [[Trainbot]]s, who have train engine altmodes, yet their toys are among the ''smallest'' of the ''Diaclone'' releases.

{{-}}
===Toys out of scale within teams===
Even toys specifically designed to interact with each other suffer from this problem. The [[Combaticon]]s are wildly out of scale to each other &mdash; [[Blast Off]]'s space shuttle mode should dwarf [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]], with the others somewhere in between. Instead, they're about the same size. Among the Constructicons, [[Long Haul (G1)|Long Haul]] is designed to look like a gigantic [[Wikipedia:Image:Liebherr_t282_1.jpg|"earth-mover" mining truck]].He should be able to carry all his teammates in his bed, with some crowding. Similarly, [[Silverbolt (G1)|Silverbolt]] (a Concorde jet) is dramatically undersized compared to his fighter-jet [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbot]] teammates. These scale problems are necessary to avoid misproportioned gestalt forms.

===Same altmode, different sizes===
Other scale problems come from characters who transform into the same (or similar) altmodes but whose toys are different sizes. For example [[Air Raid (G1)|Air Raid]] transforms into an F-15 Eagle, but his toy is half the size of [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]'s. The same can be said for the Lamborghini Countach [[Breakdown]], who should be the same size as [[Sunstreaker]], not significantly smaller. These discrepancies are also seen in the other [[Scramble City]] combiners with Earth altmodes, whose toys are all smaller than similar earlier toys.

===Toys out of scale with themselves===
[[Triple Changer|Triple-Changers]] create a whole new set of problems. [[Octane]] transforms from a 60′ (20m) tanker truck into a 200′ (65m) jumbo jet. [[Broadside (G1)|Broadside]] transforms from an Earth jet into an entire ''aircraft carrier.''

Even a two-mode toy can have this problem. Twentieth Anniversary Optimus Prime has wheels which are pretty tiny for a Freightliner truck, while his rear hitch section is too thick. These out-of-proportion vehicle parts were necessary to give his robot mode [[show-accuracy|show-accurate]] proportions.

===Toys with roleplay altmodes===
The characters with roleplay altmodes such as Generation 1 [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]], [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], or [[Laserbeak (Armada)|''Armada'' Laserbeak]] are scaled to be human-scale (well, kid-scale). Since the [[size changing]] seen in the fiction is not possible for real toys (at least, that's what [[Takara]] ''wants'' us to think), this human-scaling makes in some cases for inordinately large robot modes. E.g., [[Blaster]]'s toy, in robot mode, is taller than most other Transformers.

The opposite problem is seen with [[Megatron (G1) toys|Masterpiece Megatron]], whose robot mode is in scale with Masterpiece Optimus Prime. The result is that, while he may transform into a very accurately-proportioned handgun, it's much larger than the real thing.

===Fanciful altmodes===
Most post-[[The Transformers: The Movie|movie]] Generation 1 characters (for that matter, most post-Generation 1 lines) are difficult to accurately scale, as they generally transform into futuristic or Cybertonian vehicles whose size we don't really know. (Or, indeed, they don't transform into vehicles at all.) The scale of characters such as [[Hot Rod]] or [[Leobreaker]] is fairly arbitrary and can only be estimated by their relative size to other characters in the fiction (although most fiction is highly inconsistent in this regard, see below). Nevertheless, if one assumes that most vehicle altmodes are intended for human passengers, comparing toys such as [[Chromedome]] and [[Lightspeed (Technobot)|Lightspeed]] suggests the combiner scale problem continues.

===Big toys===
It goes without saying that the citybot and planetbot toys (Such as [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] and [[Unicron]]) are not remotely to scale with normal Transformer toys. While they are indeed ''large'' toys, they're only two to five times bigger than typical Transformer toys, and thus transform into "cities" and "planets" about the (relative) size of a bungalow. The scale problems extend to the details. Some of the citybot toys have visible windows, which are too large for a city, suggesting instead a medium-sized building.

However, it's hard to begrudge Hasbro not offering us a [[Primus]] toy the size of an asteroid. Where would we keep it?

===An exception===
There has only been one notable exception to all of this scale weirdness in the toys: the ''[[Alternators]]'' toyline, where every toy is a 1:24-scale representation of a real car, and thus they are in perfect scale with each other. Unfortunately, for practical reasons this limits the choice of altmodes. A Blast Off (space shuttle) Alternator toy would be 5.1′ (1.6m) long, while a Broadside (aircraft carrier) Alternator toy would be over 40′ (12m).

== Scale within fictions ==
Scale issues abound within the fiction, especially the [[Generation 1 (cartoon)|Generation 1 cartoon]]. A lot can be attributed to [[animation errors]], such as layering problems,[[:Image:Tinybluestreak.jpg|1]][[:Image:Huge_Ironhide_and_Small_Ratchet.jpg|2]][[:Image:CarnageMiniBlaster.jpg|3]] but some "errors" were deliberate choices, for a variety of reasons.

===Animated scale &asymp; toy scale===
[[Image:TeenyCliff.jpg|left|thumb|Frighteningly toy-accurate.]]

Very broadly speaking, the Generation 1 cartoon depicts characters to the same relative scale as the toys (including problems discussed above) when depicting the characters in robot modes. Prime, Megatron and Soundwave are generally animated at the same height, Seekers and Autobot cars slightly shorter (though not as much as the toys are), and [[Minibot]]s smaller yet. However, this was ''far'' from consistent.
{{-}}
===Comic scale &ne; toy scale ===
[[Image:OmegaSupremeintro.jpg|thumb|left|175px|No! Don't wash him in hot water! He'll . . .]]

[[Image:Omegasupreme-blasterandgrimlock.jpg|thumb|right|. . . too late.]]

The [[Generation 1 (Marvel Comics)|Generation 1 Marvel comic]] is notorious for changing the relative sizes of various characters. A single Transformer's size is rarely consistent between artists. For example, Rumble and Frenzy vary in height relative to Soundwave. A panel in the [[Time Wars]] shows [[Goldbug]], [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], [[Scattershot]], and [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]] all the same height. [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]], titanic in his [[Command Performances|original appearance]], shrunk steadily in subsequent issues until he was not much taller than the average.

{{-}}

===Variation for characterization===
[[Image:Prime has a huge head.jpg|thumb|left|150px|With 20th Anniversary Prime and Smallest Transformers Bumblebee, you can actually recreate this scene.]]

Some scale problems are for the sake of characterization. For example, Optimus Prime is routinely shown as thoroughly gargantuan, several stories in height, and capable of cradling humans in his palm. If he's the size of a real truck, Prime in robot mode should be 25′-30′ (8m-10m) tall, at best. He's drawn large because he's a leader character.

Conversely, [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] is sometimes shown only a few feet taller than an average human, while in reality he would be 10′-15′ (3m-5m) tall (the Marvel comic actually states he's 15' tall{{fact}}). He's drawn small because he's a human-friendly character, and a junior member of the Autobots.

Those pesky [[Seeker]]s remain a major scale problem; with plane altmodes they would be among the largest everyday Transformers and would ''tower'' over their Autobot adversaries, whereas the animation instead depicts characters such as [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]] and [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] as about the same height. Though jets are much larger than cars, they're drawn the same height so the battles appear fair. (And also to make it easier to animate; blocking a shot where characters differ radically in height is difficult.)

In a related vein, [[B.O.T.|sometimes]] Transformers are able to enter human buildings, fitting through their doors and able to run up their staircases without crashing through. A cast that couldn't enter buildings would be grossly inconvenient for telling some stories, so the animators fudge things.

{{-}}
===Intentionally strange scale===
[[Image:MarvelUS-01.jpg|thumb|150px|right|[[Wikipedia:White Rabbit (song)|One side makes you larger]], [[Wikipedia:Alice's Adventures in Wonderland|one side makes you small]]. (Op's been noshing on the first side too much.)]]
Sometimes artists draw a character at a different size intentionally. For example, on the cover of the [[The Transformers (comic issue)|first issue]] of [[Generation 1 (Marvel Comics)|Marvel Generation 1]], Optimus Prime is extremely huge, compared to the highway, bridge, and normal cars. ([[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] is bigger than usual, too.) This is purely for dramatic effect.

Another notable example is the splash screen for the "[http://www.takaratomy.co.jp/products/TF/bible/index.html World of the TRANSFORMERS]" website, which depicts [[Optimus Primal]] as the same size as [[Optimus Prime (G1)|G1 Optimus Prime]] and [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Movie Optimus Prime]], directly contradicting the size difference seen in "[[Optimal Situation]]" and elsewhere.
[[Image:World_of_the_Transformers_ent.jpg|thumb|250px|left|Meet the Supreme class <strike>[[Trukk not munky|Munky]]</strike> Optimus Primal.]]
{{-}}

===Transport characters===
[[Image:MakeHoistHuffer.jpg|left|thumb|Definitely ''not'' toy-accurate.]]

Transformers that act as transport for other Transformers will often dramatically change size relative to their compatriots between one shot and the next. These changes in scale are usually attributed to [[Size_changing#Implicit size changing|implicit size changing]] by that portion of the fanbase who like to find explanations for things. The other explanation is that the animators hoped the audience wouldn't notice. (''See the '''[[size changing]]''' article for more discussion of this topic.'')

{{-}}

===Combiner characters===
[[Image:DreamwaveCover6.jpg|right|thumb|200px|Since when is a sedan nine stories tall?]]

[[Combiner]] characters are often depicted as far larger than the sum of their parts. Characters such as [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] and [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] are frequently shown as [[That big green, fire-snortin' lizard|Godzilla]]-sized. Given that their limbs are mere cars and construction vehicles, this is patently absurd. ([[Superion (G1)|Superion]], by contrast, ''would'' be building-sized, given that his torso is a 100-seat jetliner.)

Combiners are also often out-of-scale with other Transformers; a combiner with cars for legs and another car for its torso should be only twice as tall as a one-car Transformer, but they are routinely drawn as five to dozens of times taller than their comrades.

===Pretender characters===
The [[Pretender]]s had interesting scale issues. In the [[Generation 1 (Marvel Comics)|original comic]] the Pretenders appeared fairly literally as their toy counterparts; Transformer-sized robots inside Transformer-sized humanoid shells. The result was that the [[Autobot]] Pretenders (in their shells) were giant-sized humans. This successfully disguised them (for about five seconds, literally) from the Decepticons, and also hid their mechanical nature from aliens. However, it was utterly useless at fooling humans. Further, in [[Guess Who the Mecannibals are Having for Dinner?|one story]], the Pretender [[Cloudburst]] exited his shell, transformed into jet mode, and then his shell (and [[Landmine (G1)|Landmine]]) boarded him as a passenger. The fact that his ''outer'' shell was now smaller than the ''inner'' robot was quietly ignored; one assumes the sort of size-changing mentioned under ''Transport characters,'' above, was involved.

In the U.S. toy commercials, Grimlock, Bumblebee, and Jazz in their new Pretender forms were small enough to fit in Powermaster Optimus Prime's hand. So, at least in that [[micro-continuity]], they were human-sized.

(The Japanese-only series ''[[Masterforce (cartoon)|Super-God Masterforce]]'' featured Pretenders who did not have outer shells but rather an ill-defined holistic transformation which explicitly involved size changing. A vaguely similar explanation appeared in [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave's]] ''[[More Than Meets The Eye]]'' encyclopedia.)

===Small Transformers===
[[Image:Powerglide Astoria Marygoaround.jpg|thumb|150px|right|Actually, [[Kiss Players|disturbing Slash fiction]] is probably more of a concern than scale issues.]]
The assorted toys produced over the decades to hit the lowest price point usually include "mini" or "micro" in their name, and usually are depicted as smaller than other Transformers in the fiction as well.

====Micromasters====
The [[Micromaster]]s are roughly human-sized in robot mode, and thus virtually all of them turn into Earth vehicles that are patently incapable of seating human passengers inside them. (The Marvel comic featured ''some'' of them implicitly size-changing to vehicles that could carry human passengers, but this was rare.)

[[Image:Hotrodpatrolcommercial.jpg|thumb|150px|left|Do you have change for four hot rods?]]
The Dreamwave miniseries ''[[Micromasters]]'' had an explanation, suggesting the Micromasters were Transformers scaled to fit a smaller race of humans. This is met with skepticism from fans, in part because it doesn't explain the scale problems ''within'' the line. All Micromasters are about the same height in robot-mode, but they transform into small cars, large trucks, planes, tanks, and other vehicles that should be vastly different sizes. The alleged "smaller race of humans" must vary in size quite a bit, and only the really teeny ones get to fly the planes . . .

To be fair, there is little indication in the fiction that the Micromasters were ''supposed'' to have consistent scale. They were explictly downsized Transformers, and the scale problems inherent to that resizing were tacitly part of the fiction. Their passenger compartments can thus be regarded as vestigial.

====Mini-Cons====
The [[Mini-Con]]s of the [[Unicron Trilogy]] are another race of small robots who stand approximately the same height as humans and, like the Micromasters before them, are clearly modeled to carry passengers. Really teeny passengers. (Notable exceptions are [[Grindor (Armada)|Grindor]] (in his original body), [[Sureshock]], and [[High Wire]], who become small one-man vehicles.) In this continuity, there's no sign of mini-passengers. The prevailing theory is that Mini-Cons scan normal vehicles and then resize them to fit, retaining now-useless passenger compartments. In the [[Cybertron (cartoon)|''Cybertron'' cartoon]], the [[Recon Mini-Con Team]] have slightly-larger-than-human robot modes, but their alternate modes are large enough for a single human passenger, implying either a little size-changing, or that their cockpits are kinda cramped.

===Big Transformers===
On the other end of the scale, the problems posed by really big Transformers lie in how they interact with normal-sized ones.

====Citybots====
[[Image:EarlyGalvatronTVMagazine1.jpg|right|300px|thumb|If you were ever ''this'' big in the cartoon, ''then'' we might call you a city.]]

The characters [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]], [[Trypticon]], [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]] and [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] have "city" altmodes (with Fort Max being supposedly the biggest of the four). However, a size at which they could house enough humans, ''let alone'' Transformers, to be reasonably defined as a "city", would suggest a robot-mode that'd make [[Hojoni|Godzilla]] look like a gecko. Suffice to say, they're rarely drawn that big. It doesn't help that these citybots have "small" robots forming vital components. Fortress Maximus and Scorponok both have "human-sized" beings forming their heads. (Fort Max has a [[Cerebros (G1)|middleman]] in there, but still.) [[Full-Tilt]], [[Six Gun]], and [[Slammer]] must logically be building-sized in robot-mode to be in-scale with Trypticon and Metroplex, but, again, are not drawn as such. Aside from the sole depiction of Metroplex in the Marvel UK story [[Space Pirates!|Space Pirates]], no fiction, not even the very large depiction in the ''[[Headmasters (cartoon)|Headmasters]]'' cartoon, even ''begins'' to approximate the logical size of a true "citybot". In reality, the grossly-undersized depictions of [[Unicron]] (see below) would be closer to the size of a transformed city. This is ironic, as in Season 3 of the Generation 1 cartoon Unicron requires the eyes of a citybot to replace his own. (Though, "realistically", his eyes should be the size of Texas.) Rare examples of a realistic citybot scale include some Japanese promotional art (e.g., at right).

The cartoon episode "[[Thief in the Night]]" makes a stab at explaining this via an establishing shot that shows Metroplex to be a small sub-section of the "actual" Autobot City, although this was not repeated. Overall, it seems that in Transformer terms, "city" is better read as "building".

Although little fiction to date has featured the Headmaster leaders as cities, in the Japanese cartoons they have been employed in their tertiary modes as starships capable of housing many normal-sized Transformers. Conversely, the Marvel Generation 1 comic depicted Fortress Maximus and Scorponok as merely "large-standard" characters, equal in height to Powermaster Optimus Prime and (in some UK issues) Rodimus Prime. (To be fair, Powermaster Prime was often drawn undersized in the comics).

====Planets and planetbots====
[[Image:Cybertronplanet.jpg|left|250px|thumb|If we're generous and assume Cybertron is only the size of Earth's moon, then the larger visible buildings are roughly the size of Massachusetts stood on end, and you could wedge ''France'' into that gash. (Which would probably improve both Cybertron and France.)]]

Scale when it comes to planets is so fraught it's painful. The problems of describing citybots as "cities" is a thousand times worse if [[Unicron]] is supposed to have a planet alternate mode, and [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] is in turn supposed to be of similar size. Though different stories have compared Cybertron/Primus and Unicron to drastically different real planets, the fact remains that they are ''planets'', and yet are shown in such insane scale to characters as to suggest they are the size of a ''very'' small moon (or [[Darth Vader|space station]]).

To start with, Cybertron was shown throughout Generation 1 with buildings visible from space. Although this was intended to show that the planet was technological in nature, it makes little sense, as the structures would have to be the size of small ''nations'' to be visible. If the buildings were in fact supposed to be skyscrapers (or even ''2000 A.D.'' style arcologies) sized for 30' (10m) robots, Cybertron would still be less than 100 miles (150km) across. By comparison, the rather [http://www.starwars.com/databank/location/coruscant/index.html Coruscant]-like shots of Cybertron in ''[[Beast Machines (cartoon)|Beast Machines]]'' may be less distinctive or "Cybertronian", but are ''far'' more believable.

{{-}}
[[Image:UnicronEatsGalvyMmmm.jpg|right|thumb|Either [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvy]] is humungo, or [[Lithone]] is ''tiiinyyy!!!'']]

Unicron is a more extreme problem. Assuming no [[size changing]] occurs during his transformation, in robot mode he would be so massive that any shot featuring a recognizable ''part'' of his body, let alone the whole thing, would be on a scale such that no normal Transformer would even be visible. Scenes in the ''[[The Transformers: The Movie|Movie]]'' in which he directly interacts with normal Cybertronians are blatantly absurd (though totally phat-looking). Shots such as the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]]s fleeing his grasping hand, a starship penetrating his eye, or ''especially'' him picking up Galvatron between his fingers before swallowing him, break any concept of "planetary" scale. If Unicron is the size of a planet, his hands would be the size of continents. This would make Galvatron (in the image to the right) the size of Great Britain.

There is no explanation for any of this. Just go with it.

The depiction of Unicron's scale in ''[[Armada]]'' was (debatably) a slight improvement, in that physical interaction with normal beings was not attempted. He preferred instead to communicate with normal Transformers by possessing [[Sideways|one of them]]. Nevertheless, shots featuring [[Thrust (Armada)|Thrust]] and [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] standing on his neck are still ''farcically'' out of scale.

===An exception: The 2007 ''Transformers'' movie===
[[Image:Moviescale1.jpg|thumb|left|250px|Scale is absolutely not an issue in the movie. Riiight.]]

The creators of the [[Transformers (2007)|live-action movie]] took great pains to avoid out-of-scale issues. (Well, greater than previous franchises.) This is sometimes reflected in the choice of vehicle or the design of their robot mode. E.g., [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]] is an extended-hood cab in order to have more mass to make a taller robot mode with. [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]]'s robot mode is nearly as wide as it is tall, with shorter, digitigrade legs, so the massive jet-former won't end up twice as tall as Optimus. In the case of [[Blackout (Movie)|Blackout]], his huge alternate mode simply results in a hulking, towering robot mode.

There are still minor scale issues to be found, though. For example, Optimus Prime can hold both [[Sam Witwicky|Sam]] and [[Mikaela Banes|Mikaela]] in one hand. Comparing this shot with when he picks up [[Archibald Witwicky]]'s glasses a few minutes later, it seems the glasses have lenses a foot (30cm) in diameter. This is a visual cheat so the glasses are visible to the audience. There's also debate about whether [[Frenzy (Movie)|Frenzy]]'s head could compact itself into a slim mobile phone. The movie-franchise toys, meanwhile, are only intermittently consistent (particularly since some of the secondary ones are redecos of toys from previous lines), though many of the wheeled vehicles are close to 1:35 scale.
{{-}}

===Scale problems and size-changing===
Some fans interpret the many otherwise-unexplained scale issues above to all be the result of [[size changing]], but this is debatable. If virtually all characters use mass-shifting (or whatever) to gain or drop a few feet of height for no logical reason, the technology would be pointlessly mundane. There's also no known reason for (e.g.) the Seekers to choose to get ''shorter'' when going into battle. A to-scale Starscream in robot mode could kick Bumblebee around like a soccer ball. There's simply no positive evidence that size-changing is so widespread.

==Official Scale Guides ==
[[Image: tfcartoonscaleguideic1.jpg|left|thumb|Official Scale Guides]] Animators and comic book artists received official scale guides showing relative and (in some cases) absolute heights. Some of these were published in the character model guide ''[[Transformers:_The_Ark|Transformers: The Ark]].'' Though they were sometimes ignored, they still give insight into the official scale of characters in Generation 1. However, even here, there are problems. Devastator in the Season One scale guide was approximately 2.5 times the height of Optimus Prime, but by Season Two he was somewhat less than twice Prime's height.
{{-}}

==Show scale vs. toy scale==
[[Image:Omegagrab.jpg|right|thumb|I know he's meant to be ''big'', but holy crap, dude!]]Some characters have great discrepancies between their cartoon scale and their toy scale. "Giant" characters such as [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme]] are, even aside from any [[size changing]] for transport purposes, clearly not in the same scale in toy form as they are depicted on screen. [[Mini-Cassette|Cassette characters]] such as [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]]'s toys are roughly the same height as most [[Minibot]]s, while in the show they are usually portrayed as human-sized.

[[Hot Rod|Rodimus Prime]] and [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] are usually shown to be of a fairly similar height (although Magnus is much bulkier), whereas there is a considerable difference between the size of their toys. By the same token, Rodimus is always depicted as being an equal stature to his opposing leader [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], whereas the toy Galvatron is instead the same size as Magnus. Optimus Prime is also usually shown as only a head or so shorter than Magnus (if that), which gets very strange when you realise that a redco of Prime's toy forms but a small part of Magnus' robot mode.

[[Image:ShrinkingHeavy.jpg|left|thumb|I lost thirty tons, thanks to the Jump-Cut! Thank you, Jump-Cut!]]

[[Metroplex (Cybertron)|''Cybertron'' Metroplex]] and the other citizens of [[Gigantion]] are depicted as gargantuan in animation, whereas the toys are merely among the normal boxed size-classes. (Although, the Japanese ''[[Galaxy Force]]'' release, dubbed "Megalo Convoy", included an exclusive [[redeco]] of the [[Legends of Cybertron]] [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]] to indicate the "correct" scale.) Within the animation, though, this causes problems with their Mini-Con partners, who are depicted as human-sized in robot mode by themselves, but when directly interacting with their larger partners, have their relative size in relation to the toy . . . meaning some temporarily gigantic Mini-Cons!

{{-}}

== ''Beast Era'' scale ==
[[Image:RattrapLOVEScheetor.jpg|thumb|right|I'm tellin' ya, ''all'' da rats in Brooklyn are dis big!]]

In the [[Beast Era]], scale is not such a large issue, although it does crop up in less obvious ways.

===Real world scale===
Although the Beast Warriors are consistent day-to-day in their relative size to each other, their scale in relation to their real-world animal equivalents is more complex. While the bug characters such as [[Waspinator]] and [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]] are obviously scaled-up, ''most'' of the characters are subtly not quite the right size.

[[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] and [[Tigatron]] are shown standing next to real members of their species, and they are both the same size as the animals in question. {{storylink|Beast Wars (Part 1)}} {{storylink|Law of the Jungle}} This makes them (and Cheetor in particular, since he's around more) the measuring sticks for the other characters. Therefore, [[Rattrap]] is a monstrously huge rat, the size of a large dog (indeed, the writers stated<ref>[http://groups.google.com/group/alt.toys.transformers/msg/8227a6ca84c0238d Bob Forward gives Rattrap's height from the show bible]</ref> that Season 1 Rattrap was 5' (1.5m) tall). [[Dinobot]] is considerably larger than a real velociraptor, closer in size to a ''[[Wikipedia: Utahraptor|Utahraptor]]''. [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]] is a rather small rhinoceros, and [[Optimus Primal]] is a roughly normal gorilla. However, [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]] is a tiny specimen of t-rex (Perhaps a Nanotyrannus [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanotyrannus]? ).

In their interactions with adult [[protohuman]]s, the Transformer characters seem between twice and three times their height. Considering our ancestors really were smaller than modern humans, this is not extremely wrong, but it deserves noting.

=== Dawn of Future's Past scale===
After the Great Upgrade (see below), the Maximals posessed roughly human-size bodies, yet they still turned into vehicles (albeit "Cybertronic" ones). Because the toys of the characters are redecoes of other characters, oddities in scale crop up. [[Cheetor]]'s car mode still has seats, and most other characters feature a cockpit, a similar problem to the [[Micromaster]]s. (see above).

=== Scale relative to Generation 1 ===
[[Image:Beastwarriors scale.jpg|thumb|left|Beast Megatron's size vs. Optimus Prime in America... and Japan. I guess the Blasty Zone adds on a few tons to [[Beast Era]] characters.]]

Between the [[Great War]] and the Beast Era, the majority of the Cybertronian race considerably downgraded in size, apparently in the [[Maximal Upgrade]] Program. (A necessary premise of the show, as the Beast Warriors are supposed to transform into roughly-normal-sized animals, not vehicles.) When entering the ''[[Ark (G1)|Ark]]'', the Beast Warriors are quite small compared to the dormant Generation 1 characters, especially [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]]. One can easily imagine them sitting inside the passenger compartments of the Generation 1 characters. When interacting with the Autobot technology of the ''Ark'' and the [[Autobot shuttle]], the Maximals are often dealing with equipment grossly oversized for them (standing on the chairs to reach the controls, turning knobs the size of their heads). The ''Ark'' also seems to feature some human-sized control panels, such as the computer in [[Master Blaster]]. Without any height booster, Blackarachnia can interface well with these controls.

On the other hand, ''[[Robot Masters]]'' depicted Generation 1 and ''Beast Wars'' characters like Optimus Prime and Optimus Primal as being exactly the same size. Lovely. It's possible that passage through the [[Blasty Zone]] may somehow [[Wikipedia:Boom tube#Later Additions to the Concept|account for this discrepancy]].

{{-}}

=== Toy scale vs. cartoon scale ===
[[Image:Beastwarsmaxgroup.jpg|right|thumb|350px|Airazor picks the Ultra-class figure.]]

The Season 1 cast of ''Beast Wars'' were not designed with the same relative sizes as the toyline. The most noticeable problem is Optimus Primal, who has an Ultra toy (almost twice the size of the next-largest Maximal toys), while in the show he's shorter than both Dinobot and Rhinox (Has/Tak would later develop a toy of Primal that was in roughly correct, show accurate scale with the others in their [[Robot Masters]] line). Further, Cheetor and Tigatron's toys use the same mold, but Tigatron is a head taller in the show (both because tigers are larger than cheetahs, and because Cheetor is "a kid").

From Season 2 onwards, new characters, and new bodies for old characters, became more consistent in size (and appearance) with their toys.

The ''[[Beast Machines (toyline)|Beast Machines]]''' toyline was ''far'' worse in size discrepancies with the cartoon. Of the Maximals featured in the show, the tallest character, [[Silverbolt (Fuzor)|Silverbolt]], is the ''shortest'' toy, while the diminutive [[Nightscream (BM)|Nightscream]] is a massive Ultra-class toy. And, sadly, the most show-accurate toy, Air Attack [[Optimus Primal]], is a ''ginormous'' Supreme figure, towering over the other toys. (Weirdly, the King Kong-like size of this toy became canon [[Prime_Spark|in one specific]] [[micro-continuity]].)
{{episodenav |BM |season=1 |02 |prev= The Reformatting |next=Fires of the Past}}

'''After their reformatting, the amnesiac Maximals come face to face with the source of their troubles.'''

==Summary==
Underground, where the Vehicons have failed to look, the four Maximals gather. Under the teachings of Optimus Primal, the team try to relearn their new [[transformation]]s. However, it is no longer simple command codes, but now requires emotional balance and deep concentration since their reformatting at the hands of the [[Vector Sigma#Beast Era|Oracle]]. [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] and [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] manage to use their technorganic transformations properly, but [[Rattrap]] still has trouble with his new body. But their time in robot mode is limited, as a rumbling shakes the chamber and a [[Mole Drone]] attacks the Maximals. The shock has forced Cheetor and Blackarachnia back into their beast modes, and they take shelter behind Primal.

Optimus leaps in front of the frightened Maximals and deflects the blasts, all the while explaining that they reverted because they lost their emotional balance. Primal destroys the mindless Vehicon with a blast of energy, but knows it's time to leave, hopefully to find a new base and continue their transformation lessons. However, his idea is met with mild rebuff by Cheetor and Blackarachnia. They believe that they should seek out any survivors and reformat them, using them to destroy the drones. But Optimus overrules them, saying they need to get a handle on their new transformations before they go out looking for trouble. They split up to search out a new base. Blackarachnia and Cheetor are paired together(real smart pairing them up, ya big [[Trukk not munky|munky]]), and Rattrap and Primal go the opposite way.

Cheetor and Blackarachnia (with some goading on Blackarachnia's part) decide to go topside. As soon as they clamber up from the caves, they discover that they are in [[Cybertropolis]], the new capital of Cybertron after [[Iacon]]'s destruction. But there is a problem; Cybertropolis should be home to "ten million Transformers", but the duo find it deserted, and [[Cybertron InfoCore]] has been deleted.

Before the pair can investigate further, they are attacked by [[Aero Drone]]s, and plunge off the side of a building before they can slide to safety. As he runs, Cheetor attempts to transform, but he hasn't found his spiritual center yet and remains in cat mode. Blackarachnia traps two of the jets with her webs, but more arrive. Fortunately, Optimus arrives. He quickly transforms into robot mode and takes to the air, but is soon overwhelmed.

Cheetor and Blackarachnia manage to transform, and they quickly dispatch the drones, Blackarachnia using electrical "stinger" energy and Cheetor's scimitars. Optimus scolds Cheetor for disobeying orders, but is intruiged at their findings. Optimus orders the group to head to the [[Council Citadel]], hoping to find answers. Rattrap moves ahead of the rest of the group but encounters Tank Drones. Optimus orders Cheetor and Blackarachnia to hold off the drones while he investigates inside. When he gets inside, he heads to the chambers of the [[Maximal Elder]]s.

Reaching the council meeting room, Primal comes face to face with the leader of the drones&mdash;[[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]], now encased in a suit of control armor. He greets Primal cordially, and decides to "fill in" the gaps in Primal's memory. Megatron claims that he won the [[Beast Wars]], and that he decided to remodel Cybertron into his own image, one of technological purity, devoid of organic life. Thus, he explains, came the [[Vehicon (BM)|Vehicon]]s, [[spark]]less Transformers who will serve Megatron and crush Primal's "mongrel" Maximals.

However, the Maximals manage to survive the Vehicons, their technorganic bodies and Spark-powered ingenuity foiling the mindless might of the drones. Frustrated by the Maximals' survival, and with some goading by Primal, the enraged Megatron breaks free of his harness and transforms into his [[Transmetal 2]] [[alternate mode|beast mode]], deactivating the drones in the process. Primal and Megatron fight, but Megatron reconnects to his [[control harness]], and summons more Vehicons, mocking Primal all the while. The Maximals arrive, and barely manage to drag Primal away.

When the Maximals inquire about what happened, Primal tells them that this all happened because he failed to destroy Megatron. However, it is now up to Primal to correct that mistake.

===Technical/Animation Glitches===
*Glitch

===Continuity Errors===
* Blackarchania seems to know an awful lot about the Cybertron InfoCore even though she only activated on prehistoric earth during the [[Beast Wars]].

* Megatron is scarred across his right eye. Unless something happened to him between the end of Beast Wars and the start of Beast Machines, the origin of that scar is a mystery, which, to this day, has not been explained.
