As an unwilling conscript of the [[Predacons]], he is contemptuous (at best) of the rest of his team, typically bored and uncooperative on missions, and he frequently sneaks off for his own purposes to try to relieve his boredom in the most cruel and horrible ways possible.

While preparing for a deep-space exploration mission, the Maximal crew of the ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]'' stopped for a few weeks at a space station. Here, [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]] helped acquire a mysterious complement to their cargo, a very large [[protoform]] branded with an X. The ''Axalon'' was ordered to dispose of "Protoform X" on a barren moon somewhere in the [[Alpha Quadrant]]. However, before its captain, [[Optimus Primal]], was able to explain the circumstances fully to his crew, they were suddenly under even newer orders to pursue a stolen [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] ship, the ''[[Darksyde]]''. Subsequently, the ''Axalon'' followed the ''Darksyde'' through a [[transwarp]] portal and crash-landed on a mysterious planet. {{storylink|Dawn of Future's Past}}

Protoform X was a [[Maximal]] experiment to recreate [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream's]] mutant, immortal [[Spark]]. Though arguably successful in this regard, the creation was unstable. In point of fact, he was criminally insane. He destroyed [[Colony Omicron]], killing all of its inhabitants save a lone security officer, [[Depth Charge]], who eventually tracked him down and captured him. The [[Maximal Elder|Maximal Elders]] had Protoform X placed into a [[stasis pod]] aboard an exploration vessel, the ''Axalon''. They instructed its commander, Optimus Primal, to dump him on some barren world in deep space.

Protoform X was among the stasis pods jettisoned by Optimus when the ''Axalon'' was damaged by [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron's]] Predacons, and only fell out of orbit far into the Beast Wars. Battle near his stasis pod shocked him into activation, and he promptly set out to terrorize all nearby Transformers, rending Tarantulas limb from limb and stalking Blackarachnia and Silverbolt. (All right, whose bright idea was it to allow the homicidal maniac to keep his weapons!?) X seemed unstoppable at first, but when one of Silverbolt's missiles jammed his tank treads as he climbed up a mountainside, he lost his grip and tumbled down the rock face in pieces.

As Protoform X lay immobilized, Megatron arrived and, using a blade of pure [[energon]], removed a portion of his indestructible spark. Megatron then had him brought back to the Predacon base and repaired. When X attempted to turn his weapons on his "savior", Megatron revealed that he held half of X's spark in a special cage lined with energon crystals, allowing him to torture the beast at will. Megatron thus welcomed him into the Predacon fold, dubbing him "Rampage". {{Storylink|Bad Spark}}

Rampage made no secret of his hatred for his new "master". Megatron kept the spark cage with him at all times, fending off at least one attempt by Rampage to take it back. Megatron eventually used the spark fragment to form the core of [[Dinobot 2]], who likewise retained the ability torture Rampage into continued loyalty with it. {{Storylink|Feral Scream Part 1}}

Though a violent sociopath, Rampage was not without compassion. He found a kindred spirit in the badly damaged [[Transmutate]] and sought to protect it from the other Predacons. When Transmutate was killed, Rampage bellowed in grief. {{storylink|Transmutate (Beast Wars episode)|Transmutate}}

Later, Depth Charge arrived on prehistoric Earth with the single-minded goal of destroying Rampage. Rampage was beside himself with joy, eager for revenge on his old "playmate". Depth Charge's loss at Colony Omicron had embittered him, and Rampage used this emotional wound to torment the Maximal. They met in battle numerous times, fairly evenly matched. {{Storylink|Deep Metal}}

While Megatron was retrieving the submerged [[Decepticon]] craft ''[[Nemesis]]'', Depth Charge met Rampage in battle one last time. At the battle's climax, Rampage allowed Depth Charge to kill him with a shard of raw Energon, resulting in a fantastic explosion which destroyed both. :Rampage transforms into a Transmetal king crab with a tank mode that includes rubber treads. In beast mode, he features fully articulated crab legs and pincers that can open, close and be posed in a variety of angles through the use of ratcheting joints. His triple-barreled Gatling missile launcher is stored on the underside of the beast mode, with its barrels flipping to the front during vehicle mode. In this tank mode, the crab legs fit together to form a road wheel network for Rampage's rubber treads to fit over so he can roll upon them. Rolling the tank activates the wheel in the missile launcher, firing any or all of the three missiles that can store in it.

:In robot mode, Rampage is an imposingly large figure with a decent level of articulation due to his ball joints, but because he wears most of his beast mode as a sort of backpack, he is quite back-heavy. His (very) small laser rifle and his triple-barreled launcher can be held in both of his hands. It should be noted that there were two releases of the toy, one with face colors accurate with the show and another with an orange colored face (seen to the right).

:The location of four of the crab legs in the show is not accurate to the toy; the show has the legs on the shoulder pads, whereas the toy situates the legs on Rampage's arms (which mean they are rather cumbersome).

The [[Maximal]]s, secure for the first time since they moved into [[Mount St. Hilary]], begin searching for the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]]s, who have been vulnerable since [[Tigerhawk]] destroyed the ''[[Darksyde]]''. [[Optimus Primal]] quotes a verse from the [[Covenant of Primus]], believing Tigerhawk's arrival to be divine prophesy. The Predacons are growing disaffected with Megatron (even [[Waspinator]] is mouthing off). [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]], ever loyal to his "queen", declares that a new "colony" will resecure them. Megatron orders him to take Waspinator and [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]], while he, [[Rampage (BW)|Rampage]], and [[Dinobot 2]] search the remains of [[Tarantulas' lair]]. Dinobot finds a hatch which leads to an underwater tunnel, which in turn leads to something that greatly excites Megatron.

[[Silverbolt (Fuzor)|Silverbolt]] and [[Depth Charge]] spot Inferno, Waspinator, and Quickstrike leaving. Optimus orders them to fall back, but Depth Charge heads in. Optimus leaves with [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]], [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]], and Tigerhawk to support them. As Primal arrives, Depth Charge finds the hatch—and a bomb. The explosion fails to kill any of the Maximals, but Silverbolt is damaged, and Blackarachnia and Cheetor escort his parts back to base. At the Protohumans' cave dwellings, Inferno declares that the caves will be their new "colony". He orders Quickstrike and Waspinator to engage, but Waspinator angrilly refuses. Something has finally snapped in the Waspy's central processor, and he declares that he is out of the Beast Wars. After a tirade against Megatron, the Predacons, life in general, and always being blown up, Waspinator tells them that they can kiss his stinger. Inferno and Quickstrike blast him, and proceed to attack the Protohumans (who have become much tougher, having learned from the example of [[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]] and the Maximals).

In the tunnels, Primal, Tigerhawk, and Depth Charge continue searching. After locating a dataterminal, Primal accesses it, and discovers what Tarantulas found and Megatron desires—the ''Nemesis'', the flagship of the [[Decepticon fleet]] and vessel which shot down the ''[[Ark (G1)|Ark]]''. Realizing the threat the Decepticon warship holds, Depth Charge heads out to locate it. Meanwhile, Megatron and Dinobot find that Tarantulas modified the vessel with a [[transwarp]] cell, installed a Predacon control console, and left behind a Covenant of Primus to boot. Megatron and Dinobot begin powering up the vessel for an attack. Reaching the sunken behemoth, Depth Charge engages Rampage. The two enemies fight, and Depth Charge grabs an [[Energon crystal]]. Driving it into Rampage's [[spark]], the explosion destroys both Transformers, and also causes Dinobot 2 to cry out in pain. Optimus, though mourning Depth Charge's loss, is relieved to know the threat of the ''Nemesis'' has been dealt with.

* The flashback to the battle between the ''Ark'' and the ''Nemesis'' recounted by Optimus Primal and Megatron neglect to mention that the Decepticons boarded the Ark before the crash. This was probably done to either simplify the retelling, increase the significance of the ''Nemesis''' involvement, or both.
* Some fans state the inclusion of a space battle and the lack of a tractor beam is an error, but these elements (or lack of them) were only present in the animated series' version of the crash. Additional versions, such as the crash depicted in the Marvel Comics, did indeed have a space battle and there was no tractor beam. (In fact, the ''Nemesis'' did not crash, but instead it was parked beneath the ocean by [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]].) It should be mentioned that ''Beast Wars'' is not a direct continuation of any specific continuity by design, seeking to treat all previous ''Generation 1'' stories as if they were Arthurian legend, so most claims of continuity error in the flashback would be fruitless.

On the ''Nemesis'', [[Dinobot 2]] is commenting that his [[spark]] has changed, and feels complete. Portions of [[Dinobot (BW)|the original Dinobot]] begin to emerge. He admires Tigerhawk's defense. Tigerhawk is able to damage power on several decks, and force Megatron to limit his destructions to using the fusion cannon, which is destroys Tigerhawk. Going to the Protohumans settlements, Megatron prepares to destroy it. Dinobot objects, asking where the honor is, but Megatron fires anyway, killing [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]] and [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]] in the process.

At [[Mount St. Hilary]], the Maximals are preparing a last ditch strategy—bring the ''[[Ark (G1)|Ark]]'' on line and fight the ''Nemesis''. However, the ship has been offline too long, and [[Rhinox (BW)|Rhinox]] and [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] are having trouble restoring power. The ''Nemesis'' arrives, but Tigerhawk's attack has depleted [[Energon]] reserves, and the fusion cannon requires time to recharge. Megatron activates the tractor beam, and Primal enters the ''Nemesis''. He and Megatron duke it out, but the Predacon clearly has the advantage. On the ''Ark'', the Maximals manage to get the engines on line, but they burn out almost instantly. [[Rattrap]] proclaims that they are all going to die, and for once, no one tells him to shut up.

However, Dinobot 2, disapproving of Megatron's actions, sends message of an [[Autobot Shuttle Omega Delta|Autobot shuttle]] stored in the ''Ark''. As Megatron orders Dinobot to fire, he refuses, stating that he has his honor. In a last bid to save them all, Rhinox pilots the shuttle on a collision course with the ''Nemesis''' bridge, crashing through the glass and going out the other side. Optimus urges Dinobot to save himself, but he remains with the ship, biding farewell to Optimus Primal. As the ''Nemesis'' crahses, Primal rejoins the Maximals.

Some time later, the Maximals, having repaired the shuttle and rigged a [[transwarp]] cell to it, leave [[Earth]] for [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. Optimus, piloting the ship, declares that the Beast Wars are over, and memorializes the Maximals who fell during the war. Rattrap, however, is more happy to be going home, and points out that they won't have to Megatron tell they get home, as Megatron is tied to the hull of the shuttle they are in. As the shuttle enters transwarp, the scene shifts to the Protohumans, who have built a village and are using parts of Inferno and Quickstrike in a ritual to celebrate their new leader...[[Waspinator]].

It the ultimate act of karma, Waspinator declares that he is "happy at last".

The [[Maximal]]s, secure for the first time since they moved into [[Mount St. Hilary]], begin searching for the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]]s, who have been vulnerable since [[Tigerhawk]] destroyed the ''[[Darksyde]]''. [[Optimus Primal]] quotes a verse from the [[Covenant of Primus]], believing Tigerhawk's arrival to be divine prophesy. The Predacons are growing disaffected with Megatron (even [[Waspinator]] is mouthing off). [[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]], ever loyal to his "queen", declares that a new "colony" will resecure them. Megatron orders him to take Waspinator and [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]], while he, [[Rampage (BW)|Rampage]], and [[Dinobot 2]] search the remains of [[Tarantulas' lair]]. Dinobot finds a hatch which leads to an underwater tunnel, which in turn leads to something that greatly excites Megatron.

[[Silverbolt (Fuzor)|Silverbolt]] and [[Depth Charge]] spot Inferno, Waspinator, and Quickstrike leaving. Optimus orders them to fall back, but Depth Charge heads in. Optimus leaves with [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]], [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]], and Tigerhawk to support them. As Primal arrives, Depth Charge finds the hatch—and a bomb. The explosion fails to kill any of the Maximals, but Silverbolt is damaged, and Blackarachnia and Cheetor escort his parts back to base. At the Protohumans' cave dwellings, Inferno declares that the caves will be their new "colony". He orders Quickstrike and Waspinator to engage, but Waspinator angrilly refuses. Something has finally snapped in the Waspy's central processor, and he declares that he is out of the Beast Wars. After a tirade against Megatron, the Predacons, life in general, and always being blown up, Waspinator tells them that they can kiss his stinger. Inferno and Quickstrike blast him, and proceed to attack the Protohumans (who have become much tougher, having learned from the example of [[Dinobot (BW)|Dinobot]] and the Maximals).

In the tunnels, Primal, Tigerhawk, and Depth Charge continue searching. After locating a dataterminal, Primal accesses it, and discovers what Tarantulas found and Megatron desires—the ''Nemesis'', the flagship of the [[Decepticon fleet]] and vessel which shot down the ''[[Ark (G1)|Ark]]''. Realizing the threat the Decepticon warship holds, Depth Charge heads out to locate it. Meanwhile, Megatron and Dinobot find that Tarantulas modified the vessel with a [[transwarp]] cell, installed a Predacon control console, and left behind a Covenant of Primus to boot. Megatron and Dinobot begin powering up the vessel for an attack. Reaching the sunken behemoth, Depth Charge engages Rampage. The two enemies fight, and Depth Charge grabs an [[Energon crystal]]. Driving it into Rampage's [[spark]], the explosion destroys both Transformers, and also causes Dinobot 2 to cry out in pain. Optimus, though mourning Depth Charge's loss, is relieved to know the threat of the ''Nemesis'' has been dealt with.

* The flashback to the battle between the ''Ark'' and the ''Nemesis'' recounted by Optimus Primal and Megatron neglect to mention that the Decepticons boarded the Ark before the crash. This was probably done to either simplify the retelling, increase the significance of the ''Nemesis''' involvement, or both.
* Some fans state the inclusion of a space battle and the lack of a tractor beam is an error, but these elements (or lack of them) were only present in the animated series' version of the crash. Additional versions, such as the crash depicted in the Marvel Comics, did indeed have a space battle and there was no tractor beam. (In fact, the ''Nemesis'' did not crash, but instead it was parked beneath the ocean by [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]].) It should be mentioned that ''Beast Wars'' is not a direct continuation of any specific continuity by design, seeking to treat all previous ''Generation 1'' stories as if they were Arthurian legend, so most claims of continuity error in the flashback would be fruitless.
