On the extensive highway system of [[Detroit]], the Autobots are aiding in the repair efforts after their titanic battle with the Decepticons. Unfortunately the residents of the city don't seem to ''understand'' that the road system was blown to rubble by the battle, and are upset that the Autobots are holding up traffic. Optimus Prime heads over to address their concerns, and they flee in fear. Bulkhead comments that he liked it better when they were heroes, to which Ratchet retorts that they still are. All of them wonder what the heck has happened that Bumblebee isn't there helping them.

There's no reason for them to be jealous though, as the little yellow bot has been pressed into service as Sari's secretary at [[Sumdac Tower]]. The little girl realizes that there's a lot of pressure in running a business, and feels sorry for her father's having had to deal with this. Porter C. Powell is less patient, and expresses a fairly cold attitude towards her "wasting" company funds on locating the genius who designs all the company's myriad robotic technologies. Sari is unable to address his concerns though, as an unidentified flying object is spotted in Detroit's skies.

Spotting it, the Autobots speed to the scene, only to be met with some justified resentment by Captain Fanzone. However they are allowed to pass once the ship is revealed to be crewed by Autobots. Sentinel Prime steps out of the ship and, once the Autobot crew walk up the gangplank, quarantines the entire area in a forcefield.

Sentinel is assigned to decontaminating the long lost Autobot crew, a task he takes to with relish until he is interrupted by Jazz for overdoing it. Released, the Autobots are informed that the Elite Guard have come to retrieve the AllSpark. Optimus explains that it suffered damage in a battle with the Decepticons, a fact that Sentinel accuses him of lying about.

Ultra Magnus sent Ratchet to recover her so the access codes she held in her databanks couldn't be used to deal a devastating blow to the Autobots. {{storylink|Thrill of the Hunt}}

Long after the end of the war, an Autobot Academy washout named Optimus Prime attempted to contact Magnus to report that 1) he and his maintenance ship crew had discovered the legendary [[AllSpark (Animated)|AllSpark]], and 2) they were now being pursued by Decepticons. Though nearly denied by [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|Sentinel Prime]], Optimus Prime got patched through to Ultra Magnus to report on the discovery. Magnus still didn't believe the Decepticons would pose much of a threat, but agreed to dispatch some ships to escort Prime's ship, the ''[[Ark (Animated)|Ark]]''. Upon landing on [[Earth]], Magnus seemed to trust Sentinel Prime's judgement regarding the planet. This might well have been because the big blue lug wouldn't let anyone else get a word in edgewise. Upon hearing that the AllSpark had been supposedly destroyed, he announced that he intended to take these charges very seriously and investigate. Adopting the vehicle mode suggested by his subordinate, the Autobot Supreme Commander proceeded to drive around downtown [[Detroit]] as a massive military vehicle. Smooth. However, once he was led to [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|Dinobot Island]] he had to bail that same subordinate out once the [[Dinobot (Animated)|Dinobot]]s had been angered. After a distress call from [[Sumdac Systems]] was answered, he turned the tide in the battle against the malfunctioning police droids. As Optimus Prime acted bravely, loyally, and with sound tactical judgment during that incident, he commended the wayward Academy bot, much to Sentinel's chagrin, simultaneously putting Sentinel in his place. Grimlock, [[Snarl (Animated)|Snarl]], and [[Swoop (Animated)|Swoop]] were originally theme park animatronic displays [[Isaac Sumdac]] upgraded with the help of [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]] and a flash of spark from [[Sari Sumdac|Sari]]'s [[AllSpark (Animated)|AllSpark]] key. When they came online, Grimlock dubbed himself the Dinobot leader, despite Megatron's commands. However, [[Tutor Bot]] brought up videos on how cars use fossil fuels. Grimlock believed this to mean that cars ate [[Dinosaur]]s, and Megatron convinced them to destroy the "fossil feeders", including the only thing worse than cars...cars and trucks that turn into robots.

As the Dinobots raged against the machines, the Autobots drew them away from the city towards a park. Finally getting out of his funk, [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]] managed to throw them into a parking lot that their fire breath had melted into tar, trapping the Dinobots. After their defeat, they were imprisoned in an energy cage and were scheduled for meltdown. Believing they had life and were not just some mindless machines, [[Prowl (Animated)|Prowl]] freed the Dinobots with the help of Bulkhead and secretly relocated them to an island.

Dwelling within the peaceful forest, Grimlock dubbed cars and trucks bad, but nature good—until two birds pooped on him. Redubbing nature stupid, Grimlock expected the two birds to fight like Dinobots, but they escaped! Tail twitching and stomach opening, Grimlock [[Transformation|transformed]], shocking Snarl and Swoop. He drew a [[Energo-sword|huge, blazing sword]] and decided he liked the results.{{storylink|Blast from the Past}}

He was later forced by the villain [[Prometheus Black|Meltdown]] to attack [[Sari Sumdac]]'s would-be rescuers, Prowl and Bulkhead. Once Meltdown was trapped and unable to hurt him, he demonstrated he'd learned to transform and joined his fellow Dinobots in threatening the acid-thrower. However, before Meltdown could be hurt, Grimlock's attention was diverted to [[Colossus Rhodes]] and two of Meltdown's mutants, and he and the other Dinobots beat up on them instead. {{storylink|Survival of the Fittest}}

Shortly after this, the Autobots learned that the [[Decepticon]]s were mobilizing, and Bulkhead spilled the beans on the Dinobots location. Seriously pissed, [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Prime]] had them taken to [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|Dinobot Island]], where he tried to convince them to help them fight the Decepticons. Grimlock was...uninterested, to say the least. He told Prime that Dinobots didn't need robots to fight, but that they would destroy robots. When Prime pointed out that the Dinobots ''were'' robots, this seemed to compel them to fight each other. When Optimus to Ultra Magnus and Sentinel to see the damaged Ark, the Dinobots showed up. Optimus advised the Elite Guardsmen that as long as they weren't provoked the Dinobots wouldn't attack. Sentinel thought they were just primitive scrap heaps and acted like it. Grimlock responded, by transforming, taking out his sword and knocking the jerk flying.
