Ratchet is one of the oldest Autobots on Optimus Prime's team. He's also second in command. Though sporting a bit of paunch, he's a true veteran. Having served as a medibot millions of years ago in the Great War, he's the only one of the group to have seen real combat before. Old wounds, both physical and mental, have made him bitter, mostly in regards to heroism. A leader figure for his comrades, he's got a bit of a military drill sergeant aura to him. He also likes bashing Bumblebee on the head when 'Bee's being a smart-ass.

His special power is based on magnetism; he can move metal-based objects and create shields. He enjoys grumbling about almost everything, being sarcastic, and having war flashbacks, just like any old man.
Ratchet suffered constant flashbacks of a mission during the war in which he was sent by Ultra Magnus to recover Autobot intelligence officer Arcee, who was carrying important security codes in her memory. Shortly after finding her, the pair were captured by the Decepticon-affiliated bounty hunter Lockdown. The hunter made a habit of collecting the powers of defeated enemies as trophies and did so with Ratchet's medical EMP device. Before he could attach it, Arcee was able to pass the device to Ratchet and begged him to use it on herself to wipe the codes and preserve their safety. In the ensuing skirmish with Lockdown, the device accidentally produced a wider blast, erasing Arcee's entire memory.

In the present, Lockdown captured Optimus Prime and intended to hand him over to the vengeful remaining Decepticons for the bounty offered against him. The Autobots attempted a rescue, with Ratchet initially absent due to haunting flashbacks over his last encounter with the bounty hunter. He was forced to intervene after Lockdown eliminated Bulkhead, Bumblebee and Prowl. Ratchet was able to free his commanding officer and retrieve his EMP device, using it to send Lockdown's ship crashing back to Earth. After reinstalling Prime's stolen gadgets, the veteran finally opened up to the younger soldier. The Thrill of the Hunt
"Is Ratchet (Animated) the same as Ratchet (G1)?" Discussion
Just to give this discussion someplace to live . . .

Given that A) Ratchet fought in the last Great War, millions of years ago, and B) the last Great War is depicted using G1 footage, a tempting fanon conclusion might be that Animated is in fact a sequel to G1, set millions of years later, and that most of the characters are new characters with the same name (like Megatron (G1) and Megatron(BW)), except for Ratchet (Animated), who is in fact the same character as Ratchet (G1).

Except that G1 was set in 1984, and Animated is not set in 1984-plus-millions-of-years. It's set around 2008. Ergo, while the last Great War that Ratchet fought in might have strongly resembled G1 in many ways, it couldn't have involved 1984 Earth, and so is radically different from G1 in that respect, at least. JW 15:56, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
:The footage also claims that the Great War was all about fighting over the Allspark, which the G1 cartoon clearly wasn't. --ItsWalky 16:04, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

:All the G1 footage was specifically from flashback episodes millions of years ago (MTMTE and War Dawn). So while one could argue that G1 and Animated share an ancient past, they do not share a "modern" (1980s) history. --Thylacine 2000 17:09, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Given a portion of the power of the All Spark, the key can be used to heal damaged Transformers, give life to machines, and control the machines. ==Fiction==
Transformers Animated
When Sari Sumdac was taken to the Ark after meeting the Autobots, her inability to stay quiet forced Bumblebee to drop her down a shaft. She was deposited into the cargo hold where the All Spark was located. Scanning Sari's mind, it channeled some of its power into the key. Optimus Prime discovered Sari, but was forced to rush to the med bay, where Prowl was dying. Sari's key began to glow, and she used it to heal his damaged circuits, saving his life. Several days later, Sari used the key to restore Optimus Prime's spark after he was killed in the battle with Starscream. Transform and Roll Out!

While trying to get into her father's lab, Sari discovered that she could use the key to control other machines. She activated the lock on the door, entering the lab, though Sumdac quickly moved her out of the room. The leftover energy, however, transfered itself to the head of Megatron, restoring his higher functions. Sari then used her key to short-circuit her Tutor Bot and get out of class early. (Don't pretend you wouldn't have.) Home Is Where the Spark Is

When Bumblebee and Ratchet were creating an electromagnetic pulse to counter the Dinobots, Sari used her key to give Bumblebee's stingers a boost. The All Spark energy was channeled into the Dinobots, granting them sparks. Blast from the Past
When Blackarachnia arrived on Earth, she tried to use the key to purge her techno-organic body and restore her original form. However, the key began to drain the life from everything organic in Detroit, and it nearly killed Blackarachnia as well. Prime was forced to remove the key to save everyone. Blackarachnia was noticeably displeased with this. Along Came a Spider
Megatron had been observing Sari for some time, including her liberal use of the key. He built Soundwave as Isaac Sumdac's birthday gift for Sari. In fact, Megatron had designed Soundwave to evolve with each exposure to the key, with the intention of using it as his new body. However, Megatron did not foresee that the key would also grant Soundwave sentience. Sound and Fury
Detailed synopsis
An unidentified meteor impacts with the Earth, and the Autobots go to investigate. Fearing that its energy potential could be used by the Decepticons, Optimus Prime has the Dinobots guard it. Impressed that they are following orders, Prime decides to make two more Dinobots. However, Megatron learns of the Meteor as well. Sending Soundwave to investigate the meteor and the Dinobots, Megatron learns that Grimlock is arrogant, Slag is violent, and Sludge is stupid.

Megatron's forces arrive at the meteorite's location, and after the Dinobots trash the Seekers, Megatron arrives and feigns humility. He wonders aloud why the Dinobots, as powerful as they are, follow a weaker leader such as Prime. Because of Megatron's powerful logic, Grimlock and the Dinobots are convinced to rebel against Prime, and the Decepticons take the Meteorite.

At the Autobot base, Prime and Ratchet oversee construction of two new Dinobots: Snarl and Swoop. However, Wheeljack and Trailbreaker discover the meteorite's energy is highly unstable. Going to warn the Dinobots, Prime arrives and is attacked. Though Optimus puts up a fight, the Autobot leader is unable to defeat the Dinobots. However, Grimlock doesn't kill Prime, a restraint that Prime attributes to his Autobot training. The Dinobots instead take Prime to the Decepticons.

At the base, Wheeljack has Snarl and Swoop do a test run of their powers. When the Autobots learn that the meteorite has been moved, they send the two Dinobots there. While the Decepticons form Energon cubes, Starscream grows concerned by the meteorite's unstable nature. When Grimlock, Slag and Sludge arrive, Megatron is angered that they didn't kill Prime, but is soon distracted as the Energon cubes detonate and Swoop and Snarl arrive. The two new Dinobots fight the old Dinobots in a vicious battle. As the meteor explodes, Prime pushes Grimlock to safety.

Realizing that Prime is both strong and has concern for his troops, Grimlock orders the Dinobots to attack the Decepticons. The Decepticons retreat, and Grimlock asks for Prime's forgiveness. The Dinobots are welcomed back, and Swoop and Snarl are added to the team.
Notable quotes
"Well, meteor or no meteor, Optimus Prime, it sure is nice not to have to worry about the Decepticons for a change."<br>
"I always worry about the Decepticons, Spike."<br>
:-- Spike Witwicky learns that Optimus Prime really needs a vacation.

"I do not want to fight you, but you leave me no choice."
:-- Optimus Primes warning to the Dinobots

"Optimus Prime, can you forgive? Me, Grimlock was jealous of you."
:-- Grimlock, actually showing humility for once

Other notes
Animation and/or technical glitches
*Optimus blasts a fragment off of the meteor at night, transforms during the day, leaves the scene around dawn, and drives off into the dead of night.

* When Soundwave goes back to the Decepticon base after scanning the Dinobots, the Decepticon insignia on his chest is not shown.

* When the Decepticons attack the Dinobots guarding the meteorite, Slag's Autobot insignia is not shown in one shot.

* In the same scene, when Grimlock asks Slag if he likes to fight, Sludge answers with Slag's voice.

* When the Dinobots are attacking Optimus Prime, in one shot Grimlock's torso is colored gray instead of yellow.

* When the Dinobots take Optimus to Megatron, Starscream is colored in Thundercracker's colors. A little later, when they are escaping the meteorite explosion, Starscream is colored as Thundercracker again.

* When asking for forgiveness from Optimus, Grimlock's eyes are not colored.
Transformers references
* The Autobots' occasional ability to fly, seen in a couple episodes before, is shown again in this episode, when Sideswipe is fighting the Dinobots.

* Apparently the Decepticons are still pretty steamed about the Dinobots utterly slagging them two episodes ago ("S.O.S. Dinobots"). Seriously guys, let it go.
Miscellaneous trivia
* In an earlier draft of this episode's script, it was not Chip who discovered the meteorite, but an original character named Doctor Lynn Hyashi.

*Grimlock's head has been redesigned. However, the old design remained in the comics all the way until Grimlock took a bath in nucleon. Still Life! The second head design would be used in all incarnations from then on.
