During the second season of the Generation 1 cartoon, a series of public service announcements (or "PSA"s) were produced starring characters from the Transformers. These PSAs were almost exact duplicates of versions done featuring characters from G.I. Joe, which, unlike the Transformers counterparts were actually aired. Each PSA ended with one of the troubled kids spouting "Now I know!" The featured Transformer would then follow it up with the infamous catch-phrase, "And knowing is half the battle!"

There were a total of 5 PSAs produced, each with a different lesson to be learned.

*"Don't run away from home" featuring Bumblebee.

*"Don't steal cars" featuring Tracks.

*"Don't bike at night without reflectors" featuring Red Alert.

*"Don't boat without a lifejacket" featuring Seaspray.

*"Don't jump to conclusions about people" featuring Powerglide.

These PSAs were never aired, however. They remained largely unseen, until they were added as bonus content to the Kid Rhinos Generation 1 Season 3 part 1 DVD set, then later to Transformers PlayStation 2 game by Melbourne House. They were also made available on Madman Entertainment's Generation 1 part 6 DVD box set.

The Ark is the name given to the Autobot Spaceship that, in most versions of the Generation 1 story, originally carried Optimus Prime and Megatron's troops to Earth.

The Ark is a Vanguard-class Deep Space Interceptor.
It has 5 Decks and houses a full crew compliment of 300 Transformers. (Although it can be flown by only a handful if necessary.) Its environment is fully-automated and self-sufficiant.

It is armed with 16 particle-combustion canons (port), 16 laser emitters (starboard), a primary starfield missile launcher, and an Overshock sonic battery.

G1 Cartoon Continuity
The Autobot ship in the G1 cartoon is never actually named. Fans have generally called it The Ark however, borrowing the name from its Comic counterpart.

The Cartoon version of the ship tends to have a more rounded ovoid look to it and is a goldish-yellow color. It has a main computer designated Teletraan 1.

Other Vanguard-class ships, pretty much identical to the Ark, are seen taking refugees from Cybertron on a history tape in Desertion of the Dinobots. It is suspected that the setlers of known Autobot colonies such as Paradron and Junk were among these.

The Ark was launched to search for fuel but ran afoul of two colliding asteroids. Then the Decepticons attacked and boarded it. Out of control, the Ark crashed to Earth. Smashing into a volcano in what would eventually become a desert. The exact location is unknown, but closely resembled the American southwest. There it rested until a volcanic erruption four million years later reactivated it and its inhabitants. From that point (1984 AD) on the Ark served as the Autobots base of operations until the construction of Autobot City sometime before 2005 AD.

The Ark's crew consisted of all the 1984 Autobots. A vehicle resemling Grapple's alt-mode and called Hauler is also seen shortly after the Autobots revived on Earth and may represent another crew member. (It is speculated by some fans that a number of the 1985 Autobots may have been aboard the Ark as well, as they suffer the effects of Cybertronium depletion at the exact same time as those that left the planet aboard her. It is possible they were crew members of the ship as well but were not recovered or repaired until later on in the show.)

In 2006/2010 the Ark and Teletraan I are destroyed by Trypticon, much to the chargin of the minibots who were assinged to protect it.

Marvel Comic Continuity
The comic version of the ship tends to have a more squared-off look to it and is frequently (though not always) shown as being a metalic silver. It has a main computer designated Auntie.

In the comic the Ark was refered to as "the last of the Great Arks" suggesting that, as in the Toon, there had been previous Vanguard-class ships. It is also refered to as the most powerful starship in Cybertron history and control of it was considered a huge tactical advantage.

It was launched to clear a path for the wandering planet Cybertron through an asteroid feild. When this was done and her reserves depleated the Decepticons attacked and boarded her. Hoping to end the threat of Megatron forever Optimus Prime PURPOSELY crashed the ship into the passing planet Earth. The Ark crashed into Mt. Saint Hillary, a volcano located a small distance outside of what would one day become Portland, Oregon.

After the crash some of the Ark's systems still functioned and when they detected the Decepticon Shockwave making planetfall the ship revived 5 of her Autobot crew and rebuilt them into the Dinobots. Upon the disapperence of these warriors in their attempt to destroy Shockwave the Ark shut iself down.

Four million years later Mt. St. Hillary errupted jarring the ship back to life. It revived and, unable to distinguish Autobot from Decepticon or to detect organic life (clearly it had suffered additional malfunctions since creating the Dinobots) it revived both sides to transform into the machines it percieved as the planet's dominant lifeforms.

The Ark became the Autobot's main base of operations on Earth until, during Grimlock's first term as Autobot leader, he had the ship repaired and returned to space. The Ark hung around near Earth space for a time, until it was abbandoned in orbit when Primus teleported all nearby Transformers back to Cybertron to face Unicron. It was recovered by the Dinobots and flown to Cybertron to engage Unicron. Grimlock, being the master of tactics that he is, physically rammed Unicron with the powerfully armed starship which was then abandoned and crashed on Cybertron. It was recovered this time by Shockwave and Starscream who repaired it and took it to Earth to conquer that planet with it. This plan was foiled by Galvatron, Megatron and Ratchet crashing the party. Their battle caused the ship to crash to Earth again, into the Canadian wilderness. This time it was recovered and repaired by Megatron who attempted to take it back to Cybertron and conquere THAT planet with it. This was foiled by Fortress Maximus and Spike Witwicky who sacrificed their lives to cause an anti-matter explosion that finally destroyed the great ship.

The Ark's original crew in the Comics consisted of the 1984 Autobots, plus the Dinobots, and the recorded mental engrams of a number of the 1985 Autobot cars.

Beast Wars Continuity
The Ark seen in Beast Wars was based visually on the Ark from the Generation 1 cartoon, however it was officially named "The Ark," retroactively confirming the designation fans had long given it. It is revealed that the Ark was built using "die-cast" construction, a lost art by the Beast Wars era.

The Ark first entered into the Beast Wars cartoon in The Agenda three-parter. Megatron (BW) had originaly come to prehistoric Earth following instructions recorded by Megatron (G1) on the Golden Disk from the Voyager Space probe. His original plan was to destroy the deactivated Autobots aboard her and change the outcome of The Great War.

Dreamwave Comic Continuity
There is some question as to The Ark's appearence in the Dreamwave continuity. It is never shown in an actual comic story. Pictures are seen in the final issue of their More Than Meets The Eye guide and there it is drawn to look mostly like the Cartoon model ( though oddly missing the rear "spoiler"). However the DK Transformers Ultimate Guide, whose main focus was Dreamwave Continuity gives a cutaway diagram of the Ark drawn in the Marvel Comic style instead, only colored yelow-gold as in the Cartoon.

Dreamwave Productions is a Canadian art design studio and comic book publisher, best known for their multiple Transformers comic book series. After bankruptcy in 2005 it was purchased by Canadian entrepreneur Christian Dery with plans to relaunch its core properties (excluding former licenses such as Transformers).

History
In 1996, brothers Pat and Roger Lee founded Dreamwave Productions in Toronto, Canada, as an imprint under Image Comics and published their first miniseries, Darkminds. Pat Lee, a self-trained graphic artist having only a high-school education, maintained artistic control while his older brother managed the business's operations. They quickly made their manga-influenced style a trademark, merging the look of an animated film with sequential art.

In 2002, Dreamwave spun off from Image and became an independent publishing company after acquiring the license for the popular Hasbro toyline Transformers. The first miniseries, based on the classic Transformers "G1" characters and featuring art by Pat Lee and writing by Chris Sarracini was the top-selling book on the sales charts for its entire run. More series followed, expanding their G1 stories to shape a brand new universe, covering the current Transformers: Armada toyline. Famed Transformers scribe Simon Furman came on board to produce Transformers: The War Within, a series detailing previously-undocumented aspects of the Transformers' past. Many artistic members of the fan community, such as Don Figueroa and Guido Guidi, were hired by the company, entering the professional world of comics via their hobby.

Three years later, signs of trouble began to appear when G1 writers James McDonough and Adam Patyk left the company over pay disputes. Despite plans for their replacement, it was subsequently announced that Dreamwave had gone out of business. They cited "the shrinking comic book market combined with a weak U.S. dollar" as the cause of the closure on January 4 2005, although a month of rumours and speculation had all but made this a forgone conclusion amongst readers. The final Dreamwave comic was published in December 2004, leaving incomplete both limited series and multiple ongoing storylines.

As Dreamwave's website was shut down, a new site, Dreamengine, registered by Roger Lee, was launched.

Controversy
One of the most common complaints about Dreamwave productions had to do with the nature of the series sets of their comics. Most of their series were a single story arc 6-8 issues long. When that story arc was finished, it would start anew, sometimes with the same characters in a different situation in time. Exemplars are Warlands: Altregis and Warlands: Age of Ice.

Though this might be said to have become a standard practice in the comic book industry, Pat Lee, whose signature art work predominated almost all of Dreamwave's comics, would draw the first several issues of the series generating large amounts of hype by means of the branding slogan 'Pat Lee drawn'. Lee would subsequently abandon the series several issues before its conclusion to begin another project, leaving the series in control of another artist and digital colourist who could not necessarily match the quality of Lee's visuals. The generated hype would eventually collapse and the series would become reduced to mediocrity. This even occurred with his most successful series Warlands: Age of Ice, and Transformers.

However, most of the controversy surrounding Dreamwave eventually became public in its closing days, when it became apparent that the company had been neglecting its payroll obligations. When a list of the company's debts surfaced online, it became apparent that Dreamwaves liabilities exceeded CAN$1 M. Most telling was that two of the very few items on the list marked "secured" were Pat and Roger's BMWs. Several artists, including Figueroa and Guidi, having previously remained genial on the matter, came forward and aired their grievances, which as of April 2005, included having to pay FedEx for shipping work for which they never received compensation. As the company failed, Pat Lee maintained ownership of his Porsche sports car and acquired a luxurious apartment in Canada.

Though the 'Dreamwave' style of art is often revered throughout the Transformers fanbase, there are a few who point out its faults- namely the 'Dreamwave style' as well as its hype of being highly detailed. The 'Dreamwave' style is often criticised for making many of the transformers seem too bulky, with some fans insisting that they offer a 'marshmallow' type of feel to the robots. Fans who often claim that there is one, distinct 'Dreamwave style' are often pointed out to be incorrect, as every artist- though made to draw their Transformers as bulky mechanoids- offer widely different interpretations of certain characters (For example, Pat Lee's War Within Optimus Prime differs to that of Don Figouera's). The often quoted 'detail' of Dreamwave can also be inconsistant, depending on the artist's style and technique, which still shows through in the artwork, despite the best efforts to bring some form of uniformity from Pat Lee (For example, Andrew Wildman's style remains the same, yet the Dreamwave water-colour influenced colouring allows it to blend with other artists.)

Relaunch
On August 2 2005 Christian Dery purchased all of the companies assets in a bankruptcy auction. Dery stated he had intended to enter into comic book publishing and the opportunity to begin with "a catalogue of such strong existing titles was too good to pass up." The Transformers license and similar third-party properties were not included, but along with all marks and logos the purchase included Warlands, Neon Cyber, Shidima, Fate of the Blade, Garden of Blades, Limbo City, Arkanium, Necrowar, Dark Minds, Capsoul, and Sandscape properties. Now holder of the "Dreamwave" trademark, Dery intends to relaunch the properties under the Dreamwave Entertainment label in 2006. Several former Dreamwave Productions employees and creators are participating to this new venture.

The often quoted 'detail' of Dreamwave can also be inconsistant, depending on the artist.

Transformers have been shown to reproduce in a number of ways.

Some are built from scratch and when finished and turned on just spring to life (G1 Catoon Dinobots and Technobots).

In other stories they must be infused with life from an outside source. In the G1 Cartoon this was Vector Sigma, in the Marvel Comic it was the Creation Matrix.

The Transformers: Generation 2 comic introduced the concept of "budding" where it was revealed early Transformerss reproduced asexually until they reached the population Primus desired. At this turning point, the practice stopped and all memory of it was erased. When the Cybertronian Empire rediscovered and revived the process the successive generations of robots were increasingly less sentient and the lifeform called The Swarm was created as a byproduct.

Despite having two genders there is little canonical evidence for TFs reproducing sexually. The best case could probably be made for Beast Wars where Rattrap makes numerous off-color remarks that hint in this direction, especially directed at Silverbolt and Blackarachnia. It is unknown what effect the Beast Machines reformating of Transformers into Technorganic beings has on their reproductive options.

Megatron has one goal -- restoring glory and power to the Predacon race, with himself at the helm. What distinguishes Megatron from the countless others who share this goal at various volumes is his chutzpah. He is willing to risk everything -- time, space, himself -- if need be.

Megatron is skillful at orchestrating vast schemes by manipulating others into doing them for him -- an idle suggestion here, a conspicuously-planted object of interest there. He knows his enemies inside and out and exactly how to provoke them. He has no friends, only pawns. Because of this attitude, this superiority complex, he despises working with the very troops he needs to carry out his plans. His hubris does not make him very popular, and so he must rely on power and fear to rule them.

Megatron is a gambler and can sometimes be a ham. (His manner of saying "Yesss..." is practically vaudevillian.) He has a twisted sense of humor and an over-developed sense of drama which rule everything he conceives, both long and short term. When he destroys you, he wants you to know that it was he who did this, and just how badly you were had. This is his greatest weakness. Like a Bond villain, he'll gladly boast to the hero at length about how smart and clever he was, giving his victim time to formulate a counterattack. He often sabotages himself by neglecting the quick and easy solutions for the bigger, meaner, and more complex.

Though these flaws seem glaringly obvious in print, they do not tend to be quite as noticeable during the series. Towards the end of the third season, however, Megatron's insanity reaches a peak, and he is captured and precariously tied onto the Maximal's ship when they leave Cybertron. Thanks to Beast Machines, we know that Megatron manages to escape, and later single-handedly take over Cybertron using a virus. This act has managed to grant him the title of most productive Decepticon or Predacon leader, as he genuinely succeeded in taking over the planet.

When Optimus Prime received the Mini-Con distress signal, Hot Shot was one of two soldiers he brought with him to Earth to investigate. He soon scanned the form of an Earth sports car and partnered with the Mini-Con Jolt.

When all three Mini-Cons that combine to form the Star Saber sword were collected, Optimus assigned them to Hot Shot. The Autobot was young, inexperienced, and hotheaded, so the great advantage the Star Saber granted him went straight to his ego. With the sword, he was nearly unbeatable on the battlefield until a Decepticon named Scavenger taught him the hard way that power without skill was useless against an experienced opponent. Hot Shot's naivete was his downfall. The double-agent Sideways tricked Hot Shot out of the sword, and Hot Shot was beaten nearly to death by his frustrated opponents.

Later, Hot Shot was visited by a friend from his past. Years ago, on Cybertron, he and the Autobot Wheeljack were amidst a firey battlefield blaze. Wheeljack was incapacitated, so Hot Shot left him, promising to get help. However, his Autobot comrades would not let him return to help his friend. Instead, Wheeljack was rescued by Megatron and swore vengeance against Hot Shot and the Autobots.

When Optimus Prime sacrificed himself to save Earth, Hot Shot was put in command. Hot Shot declined to take the Matrix of Leadership, which marked the beginning of a very unassertive and indecisive administration. It was also short, as Optimus Prime returned to life after not too long.

The Decepticons managed to take over Cybertron. Unicron, the Chaos Bringer, was looming over their planet, but Galvatron (previously Megatron) would not listen to Optimus Prime's pleas to unite their two factions against him. Hot Shot decided to take matters into his own hands and fought his way through the Decepticon base and countless Decepticon warriors to reach Galvatron and reason with him. If it were not for Wheeljack's intervention, he might not have survived. Under the Autobot/Decepticon alliance, Wheeljack's hatred of Hot Shot seemed to soften, and the two learned to trust each other again.

After the destruction of Unicron and the defeat of Galvatron, Optimus Prime felt he had failed as Autobot Leader, and with the end of conflict between the two factions, he exhiled himself to parts unknown. Hot Shot and Jetfire were left in charge of the Transformers.

Energon
Voice Actor(s): Brent Miller (US), Kousuke Toriumi (Japan)
Japanese Name: Hot Shot/Hot Shot F

During Energon, Hot Shot would find himself stationed on earth as the commander of Ocean City while Optimus Prime was away training new soldiers on Cybertron. Although somewhat less headstrong, Hot Shot was still a young soldier with a large mass of responsiblity placed on his shoulders.

Hot Shot often clashed with Kicker and Ironhide, the latter seeing Hot Shot as his idol. Hot Shot was often paired with Inferno as his Powerlink partner, and also Powerlinked with others as the series progressed. It wasn't until the arrival of Hot Shot's former commander and idol, Rodimus, that he would question his own allegiences. Not moved by Rodimus sudden side-change to aiding Unicron's resurrection, Hot Shot threatened to open fire, only to be struck down by Rodimus. After an incident involving Rodimus saving Hot Shot's life, he would regret his quick judgement in shame. The relationship between Hot Shot and Rodimus was eventually restored and they become Powerlink partners.

Throughout the series, Hot Shot would serve as a close soldier to Optimus Prime, surviving many battles on Cybertron and other worlds. Along with several other Autobots, Hot Shot was injured when the reborn Unicron destroyed a fledgling planet in the reformed Q-system. Hot Shot was reformatted into a slick silver body along with his Autobot comrades. He would eventually merge his spark with that of Optimus Supreme and his partners in the final battle with Galvatron. Hot Shot, like the others, was restored safely at the end of the Energon series.

Cybertron
Voice Actor(s): Kirby Morrow (US), Daisuke Hirakawa (Japan)
Japanese Name: Excillion/Exigeyser
Special attacks Accel Wing, Double X Shot, Battle Dagger

When Unicron's destruction resulted in a black hole that threatened the Transformers' home planet of Cybertron, Optimus Prime ordered the planet to retreat into hiding on Earth. Hot Shot took the form of a blue Earth sports car.

This form came in handy when Optimus reassigned Hot Shot and Red Alert to search for Velocitron's Cyber Planet Key. He quickly developed a competitive bond with Override, the leader of Velocitron. Against Red Alert's warnings, Hot Shot joined the Great Race. Hot Shot pushed himself beyond his means, almost to the point of destruction, but no matter how he tried, he could never defeat Override. The constant racing took a noticeable toll on his body. Was he really doing this to win the Key or just to prove to himself he was still the fastest in the galaxy?

Hot Shot was in big trouble when Optimus arrived on Velocitron and found out what he was up to. But Optimus Prime changed his mind when he realized that winning the race was the only way to win the Key. With the Autobots' full support and Coby's help, Hot Shot won the Great Race and the Cyber Planet Key.

Later, he would be severely wounded when Megatron used his Death Machine Gun on him, Scattorshot, and Red Alert. Fortunately, the powers of Primus acting through the Omega Lock repaired him into Cybertron Defense Hot Shot
