Trivia
* Treds is clearly intended to be the character from the Tonka GoBots line. His name does not appear in any of the final product material; it only appeared in an early Photoshopped promotional image on the e-Hobby website. The individual toys' names were dropped when Takara's legal department became concerned at how Bandai—the company that made the toys that would become the Tonka GoBots—would react to the names being used, despite the minimal chance of provable trademark infringement on Takara's part.

* Of course, this all became moot once Fun Publications took that ball and ran with it.

* Treds's complicated position as an undercover Autobot/Guardian amongst the Decepticons/Renegades is, strangely enough, not without precedent. The original Treds toy was among the few GoBots to sport one of the Tonka-originated GoBot faction logos... however, Treds features the Renegade symbol (as seen on Blast) rather than the Guardian one (as seen on Rumble)! Despite the presence of both the Renegade symbol and a Communist star, Treds was sold as a Guardian. Therefore, it seems as though bio-writer Hirofumi Ichikawa took this random discrepancy and ran with it.

* Treds uses a coloration that originally appeared in a promotional image from an early Japanese Transformers catalogue. All of the 1985 Mini Vehicles in this image had color differences from their final released versions.

When a mysterious cataclysm began to systematically destroy their universe, the Guardian and Renegade GoBot factions set aside their differences and attempted to preserve their world. After years of research, the human Doctor B used his Dimensional Interfacer to trace the source of the destruction to a newly-created parallel universe, which was "over-writing" and replacing theirs in the grand cosmic tapestry. A group of four Guardians and two Renegades had their bodies modified to match the specifications of these "Transformers", with the intent that they be sent into this new universe in order to integrate themselves into its people, explore and discern a means of saving their own world. When they were dispatched across the dimensions by the Interfacer, rather than wind up in their intended target universe, they were inadvertently caught in the wake of another group of dimensional travelers and arrived on an entirely different Cybertron, in the city of Axiom Nexus.

Dubbed "mechanoids of interest" due to their unconventional means of arrival, the six GoBots were subjected to lengthy interrogation, until it was eventually decided by the TransTechs that ran Axiom Nexus that they would take no active hand in the saving of the GoBots' universe. Additionally, the GoBots were forbidden to leave Axiom Nexus, and were subjected to extensive processing before being sent out to live in the city. During this processing, however, Renegade Bug Bite stole away, using a portable Astro-Beam that he had brought with him to teleport into the city. Working quickly, Bug Bite murdered a Transformer and stole his money, which he used to purchase a body upgrade for himself from Swindle, Swindle & Swindle, and then traded the Astro-Beam to Escargon for an off-world pass that would allow him to use one of the TransTech's dimensional gates, no questions asked. When the Astro-Beam's temporary effect wore off, he was returned to the processing centre and used the pass to travel to the group's original destination universe. He began a plan of his own, arriving in the target universe fifteen years earlier than planned, hoping to avert the cataclysm before it began and hiding himself amongst the ranks of the Decepticons in order to work towards the destruction of Megatron, having pinpointed him as the cosmic fulcrum on which the cataclysm hinged.

Searching for both the missing Bug Bite and some means out of Axiom Nexus, the other GoBots soon stumbled into the mess the Renegade had left behind and were accused of the theft of the passes by General Demolishor of the Military Police. Demolishor kidnapped Treds and took him to the lawless region known as the "Heap", where he intended to ransom him for the passes that he believed the other GoBots had. With no other options, the four remaining GoBots battled the general for their lives, and ultimately emerged victorious thank to the help of Crystal Widow, and the legal wranglings of Airazor and Commander Cheetor. In order to both help the GoBots in their mission, and to save themselves any further trouble, Airazor and Cheetor gave the passes, Airazor had previously recovered, to the GoBots, allowing them to travel on to their intended universe.

The GoBots arrived in their target universe at their allotted time, not long after Bug Bite's fifteen-year-long scheme had resulted in Megatron blowing his head off. The other GoBots materialized in front of his "corpse" shortly after Dreadwind had dragged it to safety, at which point Bug Bite's headless body stood up and fished a new head for itself out of a spare parts bin. As Bug Bite explained to his shocked companions, he had survived simply by keeping his organic brain behind his windshield, instead of his head—and that they could soon expect other GoBots to be joining them... Withered Hope
The intention was to have them be those characters infiltrating the Transformers universe. However, Takara got skittish when it was suggested that there was no telling how Bandai (the company responsible for the toys that Tonka adapted to create the GoBots back in the '80s) would react to the set, despite the minimal chance of provable copyright infringement.

:As such, although the set retained the name "G1 GoBots" and the references to various Tonka GoBot concepts were kept in the team Bio, the individual character names were dropped from the final packaging.
Notes
* The concept behind this set is more ingenious if you know a little about the events of the Challenge of the GoBots TV show. During the GoBotron Saga miniseries, it was revealed that the Renegades possess a machine that can reconfigure GoBots to blend in with robots from other worlds! It is possible that this very machine was used by the G1 GoBots Team to make them appear Cybertronian.

* The team Bio suggests that the GoBots passed some of their technology on to the Cybertronians. Among these is the technology behind the Spy Changers, toys whose molds were originally marketed as the Generation 2 Go-Bots.

* Treds, Bad Boy and Path Finder's colors are inspired by prototype versions of the Mini Vehicles seen in an early Takara catalog book. (See image at right.)

* The Ladybird book Autobots' Lightning Strike features miscolored versions of Huffer and Gears that somewhat resemble the colorations given to Road Ranger and Small Foot. Whether or not the GoBots' similarities are intentional or not is debatable.
Fracture, doing recon, found nobody was home at the Heartland base, and believed Starscream must've fled. * According to the Hasbro designer panel at 2008, Fracture is not merely an homage to Crasher, but was intended to actually be the character, presumably having traveled from her home universe into the Transformers world, like certain other members of her race. This makes a lot of sense, given the original intention for the figure: Fracture was originally designed to be part of the 2008 Universe series (along with wavemates Breakaway and Crankcase), Universe having been the specific timeline into which her fellow GoBots traveled. With her subsequent move into the movie toyline, however, and her appearance in two different iterations of the movie continuity, it's hard to know if the original intent for the character still holds true. We fully expect some club fiction to sort this out in the future.

* In keeping with Hasbro original plans for her, they wanted to actually call her Crasher, but couldn't get the name. They then tried "Catalyst" but couldn't get that either. Stupid cross-dimensional legal issues.

* According to deco artist Joe Kyde, it took finding a real F-1 style racer in that black-and-white-with-red deco to seal the deal and get the toy made.

* In Titan, Fracture appears to have the natural ability to hack lead drones.
