Savage and dimwitted warriors, the '''Dinobots''' originally operated using artificial intelligence instead of [[spark|ember]]s. They were created by [[Wheeljack (SG)|Wheeljack]], who patterned them after [[Grimlock (SG)|Grimlock]] using programming developed by [[Starscream (SG)|Starscream]]. The Dinobots who were captured and reprogrammed by the Decepticons are called '''Dinocons''', and both factions were taken by Grimlock to the [[Omega Terminus]] to receive embers and the ability to transform.

Wheeljack rode into battle atop a towering Dinobot, and ordered the group to attack Optimus Prime, who had disrespected the mad scientist in the past. The group instead turned on itself and scattered into the wilds of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], leaving several of their ranks dead in the stampede. A scramble then ensued, with the Autobots and Decepticons each trying to gain control of the Dinobots. [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] and [[Sideswipe (SG)|Sideswipe]] managed to restrain Goryu and Slugfest, while [[Goldbug (SG)|Goldbug]] and [[Jazz (SG)|Jazz]] snatched Swoop.

After a new, intelligent aspect of [[Grimlock (SG)|Grimlock's]] personality was awoken by the [[Omega Terminus]], he gathered the Dinobots and Dinocons, promising to take them to a secret place. {{storylink|Dungeons & Dinobots}}

Starscream discovered that Slugfest and Overkill were missing from their pen. He questioned Goryu, but the big brute knew nothing. Finally, he discovered that the two had transformed into octaltrack data cartridges. After some study, it was revealed that all the Dinocons now had embers and the ability to transform. {{storylink|Do Over}}

After the Dinobots were activated and got loose, the [[Autobot]]s decided to chase some of them down in the hopes of reprogramming them as troops. Jazz and [[Goldbug (SG)|Goldbug]] were able to track Swoop to an old observation tower, where they were then joined by [[Rodimus (SG)|Rodimus]] and [[Blurr (SG)|Blurr]]. Jazz wanted to just shoot the "flying monster", but Goldbug pointed out that [[Optimus Prime (SG)|Optimus Prime]] wanted it alive. They put it to a vote that the reluctant Jazz should be the one to climb the tower and capture Swoop, their decision backed up by pointed weapons.

Swoop thought the visit from Jazz was the best thing ever, and happily took his "new friend" for a joyride clasped in his claws, much to Jazz's extreme dismay. Goldbug ended up getting Jazz down by shooting Swoop's wing, causing them both to fall to the ground. Swoop was overjoyed that Jazz had broken his fall, saying he loved his new friend for doing that. A squished Jazz told Swoop to shut up and groaned that he hated everybody at that moment. {{storylink|Dungeons & Dinobots}}
