Warfare holds no interest for Beachcomber; he much prefers to take long, lone journeys into the vast expanses of desert wilderness and along the rugged coastal shores that occupy so much of the American landscape. Only in these places of such natural beauty does can he completely escape the conflict between the Autobots and Decepticons. He's what Earthlings would refer to as "laid back." Despite his feelings to the contrary, his many physical weaknesses, and the looks of contempt from the more warlike of his fellow Autobots, he never shirks his responsibility to fight for the Autobot cause. Deep down he knows that until his side wins there is no true escape, no matter how far he travels into the desert.

In vehicle mode, Beachcomber has a range of 800 miles and is capable of traveling over rugged terrain. He's equipped with various magnetic, ionic, electrostatic, infrared, and sonic sensors, among others, which enable him to accurately determine the chemical composition of any terrain he visits. He uses this ability to locate vital resources for the Autobots. Beachcomber can use his magnetic sensors like a compass, but magnetic disturbances can lead him astray. His sonic probes possess limited range. <!--Attack of the Insecticons, if you're wondering.-->
:Voice Actor: Alan Oppenheimer (US), Osamu Saka (Japan)

Beachcomber showed up out of nowhere one day, helping Hound, Inferno and Bumblebee investigate some Insecticon attacks on an old growth forest. This unit proved to be sufficiently under-powered when it came to confronting freshly fed Insecticons, and their battle strategy amounted to hiding behind Hound's holograms until the bad robots went away. The Insecticon Syndrome He was next seen on Dinobot Island, worrying that the battle with the Decepticons would destroy the environment before it could be properly studied, but at least he was still fighting while complaining. Dinobot Island, Part 2

Unlike the next time. On a geology expedition with Perceptor and several other Autobots, Beachcomber abandoned them in the middle of a firefight to explore a cave in the nearby cliffside. While his friends were dodging laser fire and trading blows, Beachcomber was learning to speak parakeet and communing with nature. He also found a golden lagoon full of electrum, a naturally-occuring element which would make any Transformer impervious to harm. He dipped his hand into the lagoon, and it turned completely gold in color. Beachcomber hid this information from his fellow Autobots, and even kept his silence after Thrust arrived coated in electrum and drove the Autobots into retreat, capturing two of their number in the process. Valuing the scenic beauty surrounding the electrum pool, Beachcomber still refused to warn his comrades after the entire Decepticon army arrived coated with invincible golden armor. He went solo to check on the lagoon, and was captured by the Decepticons. Some of the dumber Seekers acted as his prison guards at the Decepticon sunken base, though, and Beachcomber managed to escape alongside his fellow prisoners Perceptor and Seaspray.

Reaching the electrum pool, the trio was met by Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots, who had independently uncovered the pool's location thanks to Powerglide. Realizing his golden hand would give him away, Beachcomber quickly dove into the electrum to disguise his prior knowledge of the substance. In the final battle with the Decepticons, Megatron ordered the electrum pool destroyed rather than sharing it with the Autobots. In the aftermath of the explosion, the wilderness was totally decimated. Beachcomber never told his Autobots that he had known about the Decepticons' secret weapon and had kept silent, and instead sat around mourning the loss of the grass and trees.

Beachcomber is kinda a selfish dick, honestly. The Golden Lagoon

He was next seen protecting San Francisco from an alien bird-dragon unleashed on Earth by the Constructicons. He tried appealing to the creature, thinking that we're all one with the same universe. Yeah...that didn't work well. The Secret of Omega Supreme

Beachcomber was later kidnapped by a greedy toll booth and forced to drive in a circle while hopping over spike-traps. It might make more sense if we explained it better, but it would be nowhere near as funny. Prime Target

In 2006, Beachcomber was stationed at the Ark with Warpath, Pipes and several others when Trypticon came to destroy it. Their feeble efforts to defend the spacecraft were barely noted by the dinosaur robot. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5

Marvel Comics continuity
:(Note: Events in italics occurred only in the Marvel UK books.)

Beachcomber was a member of Perceptor's resistance cell on Cybertron who disobeyed orders along with most of the cell to help Blaster recover Scrounge from the smelting pool. He actually demonstrated some uncharacteristic strength and gusto, tearing down a laser sentinel tower with his bare hands. The rescue mission failed, but they did recover Scrounge's stolen data, and learned that Optimus Prime and the crew of the Ark were alive and fighting on Earth. The Smelting Pool!

Soon after, Perceptor's crew began a mission to destroy the Space Bridge before the Decepticons on Earth and Cybertron could begin trading resources. Beachcomber used his geological skills to map out a safe path underneath the planet's surface to bomb the underlying support structures of Darkmount, bringing down Straxus's whole fortress. The unit failed to destroy the Space Bridge, however, and were ultimately forced to retreat across the Bridge to Earth. The Bridge to Nowhere! Beachcomber and his fellows had to battle RAAT and the time-traveling Galvatron before finally making their way to the Ark. Resurrection, Part 1

Beachcomber managed to avoid virtually all kinds of fighting for the rest of his time on Earth, doing nothing more strenuous than getting shot at by the Ark's own defense systems. Funeral for a Friend! While he did champion Blaster for replacing Grimlock as the Autobot's commander, this didn't stop Beachcomber from whining about senseless violence throughout their duel on the moon. Luckily, a Decepticon strike force arrived to drown out his voice with some lasers and explosives. Totaled!

A flash of light, the smell of burning chemicals, the roar of falling bombs -- violence is anything BUT senseless, Beachcomber!

Find Your Fate Junior
Beachcomber had to find a path to the surface from the cave system the Autobots were trapped in. He explored the system of underground lakes, marveling at the many strange and things that lived there. While recharging the Sun-Pak on the surface, he was attacked by Kickback, and had to be saved by Sparkplug. How humiliating.

In the 'unsuccessful' ending to this multipath adventure, Beachcomber became lost when his magnetic sensors erroneously led him directly to Megatron. He did not regret this error for long.

Beachcomber discovered Rumble practicing his earthquakes near a concealed base and learned of a Decepticon plan to destroy nearby Central City.

Optimus Prime decided that such grave news required a pinpoint response with utmost secrecy...so he sent the recklessly impulsive Windcharger, the bombastic Powerglide, and Beachcomber to babysit the other two.

Dreamwave comics continuity
Beachcomber was spurred into action against Shockwave's regime on Cybertron when Optimus Prime returned to the planet and rallied the Autobots into action. His actual contribution to the insurrection is undocumented, but it's entirely possible he may have even picked up a weapon. Really. Countdown to Extinction (comic issue)

Afterwards, Beachcomber was assigned to a mission suitable for his pacifism, as part of Bumblebee's supply crew on the Orion, bringing news and fuel to their comrades on Earth. Night of the Combaticons Little did they know they would be caught up in heavy combat with Sunstorm. Beachcomber was supposed to be guarding Sunstorm's primary target, the Decepticon Starscream, in an Alaskan bunker. Now, of course, the question isn't whether Starscream betrayed them at the first opportunity; it's whether Beachcomber even bothered to pick up his gun and try to stop Starscream, or just passively let the 'Con gun him down. The Omega Effect

IDW comics continuity
Beachcomber was captured by Soundwave, who used Bombshell to slip him the brown acid. Under its control, Beachcomber attempted on three occasions to assassinate Blaster. Ultimately, Blaster confronted him about it and forced him to fight against his Decepticon control. Though his mental resistance shorted out the shell, his neural processors were severely damaged as well.

Beachcomber is now in stasis in a C.R. chamber. Whether or not he is functional enough to experience flashbacks is unknown.

: Beachcomber transforms into a blue and gray dune buggy of probably made-up model. The figure came in several variants, one with "Hasbro" stamped across the left arm (removing half the "mesh" pattern), and one without (leaving the full mesh there).

: Later on, Beachcomber (along with all of the then-current Mini Vehicles) came packaged with a bonus Mini-spy as well.
Generation 2
* Beachcomber (Mini Vehicle, 1993)

: Generation 2 Beachcomber uses the exact same mold as his Generation 1 counterpart. However, this time around, the blue was replaced with a chrome green and the grey of the upper legs and lamps was replaced with neon red. This version removed the "half-mesh" on the left arm and simply replaced it with a large Hasbro copyright stamp.

: A rare variant exists that may have been a testshot run with grey legs. These figures were apparently given out internally by Hasbro as Christmas ornaments, as they have been found bagged with a string attached and a card reading "Transformers Christmas ornament" on one side and "Merry Christmas from the Boys' Toys Marketing" on the other. The same treatment has been seen with a G2 Seaspray as well.
:Undermine is a Jungle Planet Decepticon from the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Undermine is one of Scourge's enforcers, keeping the Jungle Planet populace pacified, which has put him on his own brother Repugnus' enemy list. He serves as a silent spy and assassin for Scourge, hunting down dissidents, learning their secrets, then usually closing in for the kill. He is said to be one of the greatest hunters in the galaxy.

Centuries ago, Undermine appeared to a much younger Scourge as an innocent traveller who had been attacked. His mistreatment by extremely vague and undefined aggressors spurred Scourge to abandon Backstop's teachings and wage war against both the ineffectual rulers of Jungle Planet and the criminals that stalk the lawless lands. As Scourge grew in power, Undermine attached himself to the warlord, serving as Scourge's bodyguard alongside Brimstone. Honor

Much later, Undermine and Snarl were doing what they always did, standing around outside Scourge's temple when two strange beings appeared, walking toward the temple entrance. Moving quickly to bar their way, Undermine warned that the strangers should leave this sacred place, lest they face the consequences. When the large being, named Megatron, merely pushed them out of the way, Undermine leapt to attack, only to be effortlessly swatted aside. After Scourge appeared and Megatron explained his search for the Cyber Planet Keys, Undermine joined his fellows in transforming dramatically into beast mode... for no apparent reason as they immediately ceased hostilities afterwards. Search
Cyber Key Bio
Scourge had a bodyguard prior to undermine, a nice guy named Shrapnel. This did not please Undermine, who proceeded to forge evidence of Shrapnel insulting the current administration. This evidence shortly left a vacancy Undermine was more than willing to fill.

: Undermine transforms into a robotic spinosaurus. Plugging a Cyber Planet Key into the back-end of his dino-mode sail reveals a spring-out blade, a gimmick also usable in robot mode as a horn. His dino-tail detaches to form a flail-weapon in robot mode, which plugs into holes in the tops of his hand-claws. He comes with a silver-bordered Jungle Planet styled Cyber Planet Key; the Hasbro version has the Key Code "s48a" stamped on the back.

: The Hasbro and Takara versions of the toy have a pretty significant difference in their coloration: Hasbro's is a higher-contrast scheme, using a more subdued light-green with a deeper forest-green, while Takara's has a more vibrant light-green but uses a pale camo-olive green rather than the Hasbro version's dark-green.

: This mold was also used to make Cybertron Repugnus.
* Undermine is one of the few Transformers who canonically have more than two arms in robot mode. Though his dino-mode forelimbs fold up into his chest in robot mode, in the Cybertron cartoon, they are shown as being just as animate as they are when he's in beast-mode.

Snarl and Undermine were bodyguards of Scourge, both of them defending the dragon dictator's temple from aggressors. Their greatest test came when two alien Transformers, known as Megatron and Starscream, arrived on Jungle Planet and demanded entrance to the temple. When the strangers pushed their way past the protesting guards, Undermine attacked from behind, but was quickly subdued by Megatron. As Snarl also transformed to begin his attack, Scourge ordered a cease of hostilities in order to speak with Megatron like civilized beings.

Snarl did not trust Megatron's supposedly noble motives in his search for the Cyber Planet Keys and left the temple to seek out his old master, Backstop. He discovered that his master had rescued an alien named Overhaul, who told a very different story about Megatron's quest for the Cyber Keys. This story prompted Snarl to help this "Autobot" seek an audience with Scourge.

Snarl is a very moody loner and can live up to most of the threats that he chooses to give out, and he can be thought rude and unhelpful. Some guess that he enjoys getting moody and lashing out, just to make others jumpy and to see their reactions.

Cybertron
*Snarl (Deluxe, 2005)
:Japanese ID number: GC-14

: Snarl transforms into a techno-organic wolf. His articulated tail features a spring-loaded missile launcher that can fire a transparent yellow projectile. Inserting his Cyber Planet Key causes his lower jaw to open and a pair of transparent yellow fangs to extend from his upper mouth. Unlike other Cyber Key gimmicks, this feature does not automatically secure itself into position, so as to allow the user to open his mouth repeatedly with the Cyber Key. However, his mouth can be locked into the open position by rotating down the two pieces of blue 'fur' on his cheeks.

: In robot mode, Snarl is almost his beast mode inverted, as his robot legs are the beast hind legs rotated, and the torso and arms are the beast torso split and flipped. He is armed with his tail, which has an articulated handle that allows it to be held as either a projectile weapon or a sword. He retains his Cyber Key feature in this mode. He comes with a silver-bordered Jungle Planet type Cyber Key; the Hasbro release has the Key Code "d43j" stamped on its back.

:This mold was also used for Fangwolf Black Version (see below) and 2007 Weirdwolf.

*Fangwolf Black Version (Deluxe, 2005)

: This "Black Version" of Fangwolf was released under the Toys Dream Project exclusive label in Japan, limited to 6,000 pieces. He is a redeco replacing all of the regular Fangwolf's colors with black and grey with predominantly silver highlights.

Exciting, huh? He didn't even get his own packaging, just the normal Galaxy Force Fangwolf box with a "Black Version" sticker slapped on the window.

Trivia
* Snarl's robot mode sculpt appears to be inspired by the Beast Wars Fuzor Silverbolt, with both bodies sharing similar details.

* Snarl and Silverbolt also share their English voice actors! Speaking of, according to Scott McNeil at 2006, had he known up front that Snarl was going to be the character he'd be voicing for the majority of the Cybertron run, he'd have given him a more interesting voice than "just a Dinobot variation".

Metroplex is the head foreman of the transformers on Gigantion. While he is a calm, quiet and intelligent being, like all Gigantions he is immense in size and strength. He is tasked with forever building cities on his homeworld, and then immediately abandoning them as a way to forever look to their peaceful future and avoid the past, which was wartorn and violent. His Mini-Con partner is Drill Bit.
Voice Actor: Ron Halder (US) Masafumi Kimura (Japan)

When the Autobots first appeared on Gigantion, Metroplex was at first wary of them, believing the group to be from the mysterious Planet X. As this was clearly not the case, he and his subordinate Quickmix agreed to hear out the newcomers. Optimus Prime and Vector Prime explained that they needed to find the Gigantion Cyber Planet Key in order to save their own homeworld, and that they believe the clues may be hidden in the older cities on Gigantion. At first Metroplex and Quickmix refused to let them into the cities, as it was one of their sacred laws to never enter a city they had previously built.

Metroplex would soon encounter Megatron and beat him into submission, destroying Nemesis Breaker in the process, and eventually triggering his upgrade into Galvatron. Galvatron would encounter him again, quickly defeating the lumbering giant.

Metroplex continued to aid the Autobots, including being a crew member on the new space bridge project.
: Metroplex transforms into a Cybertronic bucket-wheel excavator. In this mode, his bucket-wheel/shovel assembly is on a rotator and contains numerous ratchet-joints, plus the wheel can spin, though it does not do so freely. This assembly becomes Metroplex's colossal axe "Sparkdrinker" in robot mode, plus has a spot on the shovel to attach Drill Bit in his vehicle mode. Plugging a Cyber Planet Key into the Key jack on Sparkdrinker opens up the wheel to form the axe-head, plus activates an electronic light.

: Like his fellow Gigantions Quickmix and Menasor, Metroplex has two different robot modes, their full-sized standard mode, and a shorter, sturdier "work" mode.

: He comes with his Mini-Con partner Drill Bit, and a gold-bordered Gigantion-style Cyber Planet Key. The Hasbro version has the Key Code "lm74" on the back of the Cyber Planet Key.
: A solid-gold-chromed version of Metroplex was given away as a contest prize in Japan. Limited to 15 pieces, it was available in a Japanese toy magazine (which one is unknown at the time).
Trivia
* Metroplex's "work" robot mode is not shown in the Japanese release's instructions. It is also only briefly glimpsed in the cartoon, as part of his stock-footage "vehicle to robot" transformation sequence. Also, several times in the show where Metroplex was depicted in a smaller environment, he was in his "work" mode without explanation or transformation shown.

A wise elder of Jungle Planet, Backstop sought enlightenment beyond the boundaries of his world. But when he returned, he found himself focused not on the things he'd learned offworld, but on the strife of his people. Thus, he attempted to teach a new generation of Transformers what he learned and the ways of peace, only to see his brightest pupil, Scourge, succumb to the evils of tyranny.

Fiction
Cybertron cartoon
:: Voice Actor: Scott McNeil (English) Masahiko Tanaka (Japanese)

Years ago, Backstop sought to teach the young warriors of Jungle Planet the ways of peace and the honorable warrior. Their planet had long since been ravaged by raiders, and he thought that this new philosophy of "peaceful aggression" would usher in a new age for their people. His students included Scourge, Snarl, and Undermine. To the former two, he was like a father, and his charges saw one another as brothers.

However, their bond was torn apart when Scourge resolved to take the fight to the raiders. Backstop protested this, saying that Scourge would begin a cycle of vengeance that would only lead to more vengeance. Scourge left his master's side, and Snarl went with him, deciding to stand by his friend rather than his master.

Backstop's words would ring true; after Scourge defeated the raiders, his honor and decency began to fade, and the dragon-bot had all of Jungle Planet in his iron-fisted grip. What had began as a fight for peace turned into a dictatorship.

Years later, Backstop encountered Overhaul, who had been weakened by the harsh environment of Jungle Planet. Surprised by the fact that Overhaul could turn into a vehicle rather than a beast (though he did recognize the form), Backstop would later learn that Overhaul was in fact from the Transformers' ancient world of Cybertron. Through him, Backstop became affiliated with the Autobots and eventually told Scourge's story to Optimus Prime. Eventually, even Backstop learned that one had to fight at some point, and he went to tell Scourge that Optimus would be challenging him. At the same time, reminded Scourge that Optimus fought for the things Scourge had forgotten.

Optimus and Leobreaker defeated Scourge, and afterwards, Backstop helped the Autobots in their attempt to get Jungle Planet's Cyber Planet Key off the planet. He would remain on his homeworld, even after Scourge left to seek vengeance on Optimus, though he did see the effects of the Black Hole when a space bridge appeared over his world.

Much later, Backstop joined the multi-world alliance and rushed to help Scourge (who had learned the error of his ways) to right the massive engine that was meant to restore Jungle Planet to its rightful position in space. He then oversaw a tournament to decide the new leader of Jungle Planet and declared Scourge the rightful and honorable ruler.

Afterwards, Backstop decided to join the crew of the Hyperborea. When it departed, he told Evac that "sometimes the path to enlightenment leads away from home."

Hasbro bio and key code info
Backstop is a Transformer who once relied on anger until he traveled the galaxy, learning the way of the warrior from Bludgeon and Banzai-Tron. He returned and was eventually defeated in battle by Scourge. He sought to destroy the dragon-bot, having learned the true value of lifem-life that Scourge does not honor.

Eventually, Leobreaker taught him how to play baseball.

:(Note - Hasbro's bio presents a very different image of Backstop from the one portrayed on the show. However, the text in his key-code information is more in line with the TV series and also somewhat ties in with his comment about having seen vehicular Transformers prior in his life.)

: Backstop transforms into a robotic rhinoceros. In either mode, inserting a Cyber Planet Key into his key slot activates his spring-loaded ramming horn, which extends outward (but does not actually launch). He comes with a silver-bordered Jungle Planet-style Key; the Hasbro version has the Key Code "stw7" on its back.

: There are several notable differences between the Hasbro and Takara releases of Backstop. The Takara version is overall lighter, with a mainly medium-gray body, silvery beast-mode legs, plus coppery plastic and paint deco. The Hasbro version, however, uses a darker gray with a bit of purple tint for the main body, with medium-gray legs and a more yellow-gold on the accenting.
*Backstop (Scout, 2007)
: Backstop was one of several Cybertron Scout-class toys also made available on Universe cardbacks, and sold through discount chains like Kay-Bee Toy Works. This version is unchanged from the Cybertron release.
Trivia
* Backstop's Japanese name is a "coolification" of the Japanese word for "rhinoceros", "sai". Think of it as the Japanese equivalent of the name "Rhinox".

* Backstop had a normal left arm that unfolded from the back of the rhino very far into the design process, so far as to have a complete sculpt made. According to Hasbro employees, this was changed into his less human-like scooped arm design so that the rhino mode wouldn't appear to have a fist emerging from its... well...

:Scattorshot is an Autobot from the Cybertron portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

A former computer-game programmer, Scattorshot quickly became Optimus Prime's go-to bot for computer work. But the nervy robot not only doesn't think he's cut out for battle, but believes the mere fact that he's done as well as he has in battle is just a big setup. He's convinced his good luck will run out on him, and run out at the worst possible moment.

As such, Scattorshot has developed a thing about guns. He likes altmodes with a lot of them. Maybe with enough firepower, he can prolong that whole karma thing. His companions find him to be a bit pessimistic, but far from hopeless... he may make a great soldier someday if he can just get over that nervousness.

Since gaining a new body and joining the Cybertron Defense Team, Scattorshot has gained more confidence and lost some of his pessimism, now that he has two brothers in arms watching his back. That, and the fact his new body has enough weaponry for him to make his own 'luck'.

When Optimus Prime and Scattorshot arrived on Earth, the latter scanned his vehicle mode off of a billboard advertising a war movie. To Prime's surprise, it was a conspicuous military half-track, and berated him for his choice of a disguise. Scattorshot sassed back that Prime's own vehicle mode of a gigantic fire truck armed with huge cannons sure is a good disguise. Then he pretended that Prime had disappeared for the moment, as he was so good at blending in. He finally laid out the advantages of a half-track, such as off-road, all-terrain capability, relatively high speed in difficult conditions and that nobody would ever think to give him a parking ticket.

Prime merely replied "Well... a fire truck is bigger." before quickly driving off. Inferno (Cybertron episode)
Cyber Key Code content
Scattorshot didn't just program video games on Cybertron, he also played them. A LOT. Unlike most gamers, his polygon addiction actually came in handy as he used his knowledge of strategy games to help Optimus make plans for fighting the Decepticons.
Trivia
* According to Aaron Archer at 2006, the reason both versions of Scattorshot came with extra blue guns was because both versions had a little more left on the "per item" budget than the normal plans called for, so they added the guns for a little more value.

* In the opening-credit roll call of the Cybertron cartoon series, Scattorshot's name is spelled "Scattershot". This is also the spelling used on his Cyber Planet Key content.
Marvel Comics continuity
In his younger days, William "Sparkplug" Witwicky was a Sergeant in the US Marines. Later in life, he was a mechanic who owned his own service station.

A P.O.W. during the Korean War, Sparkplug was forced to repair the Koreans' equipment. However, he secretly sabotaged that same equipment, leading to personnel and material losses for the North Koreans. After being kidnapped by the Decepticons, he was instructed by Megatron to develop a process that would convert Earthen gasoline into fuel they could consume. Sparkplug drew on his memories of his time as a mechanic in the Korean War, recalling an instance where he had sabotaged the enemy vehicles' fuel and brake lines, and did the same to the Decepticons, poisoning their fuel and allowing the Autobots to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. However, before this heroic act could come to light, many of the Autobots believed that Sparkplug had betrayed them, and an over-reactive Jazz let loose with his flamethrower. Although Sparkplug wasn't injured by the weapon itself, he did suffer a heart attack. He was much less friendly with the Autobots thereafter. The_Last_Stand

Much later, his service station was destroyed by Ratbat and the Predacons. It is never established whether or not he rebuilt the station.

Sometimes Sparkplug identified himself as William Witwicky, but other times he identified himself as Irving Witwicky. The most likely answer is that his full name is William Irving Witwicky (or Irving William Witwicky).

Animated continuity
:Voice actor: Chris Latta (US), Toshio Ishii (Japan)

At some unspecified point in the past Sparkplug worked as a ruby crystal miner in Burma, of all things.

When first seen in the present day he and and his son Spike were working on an off-shore oil rig. The rig was destroyed in battle by the Decepticons and the two quickly and happily latched on to the Autobots that saved them, offering up their expertise and knowledge about planet Earth in exchange for joining the team. More Than Meets the Eye, Part 1

Spike and Sparkplug seem to have moved into the Ark after this and are almost constantly seen hanging out with the Autobots, there or abroad on missions. While Spike enjoyed going out on missions frequently, Sparkplug tended to stay at the Ark and helped Wheeljack and Ratchet on any mechanical or engineering work they were doing. He was apparently good enough at Transformer technology to effect repairs on Transformers like Omega Supreme without aid or guidance. The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2

He once managed to take spare Autobot parts and put them together to make a functioning robot called Autobot X; once activated, the creature immediately bashed in everything and everyone in sight. Autobot Spike

He is kidnapped by the Decepticons as a test subject for Doctor Arkeville and turned to their side by the doctor's mind control chips. This causes Spike much emotional pain until the Autobots eventually find a way to use soundwaves to counter the chips and bring the true Sparkplug back.

Sparkplug was later seen operating a garage in New York.

(Sparkplug appears throughout Seasons 1 and 2 of the cartoon but does not appear in the Movie, set 20 years later, nor is he ever seen or mentioned after that. His fate remains unrevealed.)

Find Your Fate Junior
Sparkplug discovered a critical weakness in the Decepticons' circuits that would allow the Autobots to destroy them once and for all. However, the Decepticons discovered this and came after Sparkplug, who fled to the hills to hide. This eventually led to an Alamo-like standoff with a small group of Autobots holding off the Decepticon army from the shelter of a cave for two days while they waited for relief to arrive, with Sparkplug performing the makeshift repair work to keep them running.

The paper Sparkplug had the specifics of the weakness on was ruined in the battle. He could re-create the research, but the Decepticons would be able to change the design of their circuits while they did so. Still, at least it would keep them out of trouble for awhile! Battle Drive

While tinkering in his lab, Sparkplug invented the Sun-Pak, a powerful solar battery that threatened to change the balance of power between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Insecticon spies forced them to flee the testing range through a series of caves, and Sparkplug later rescued Beachcomber from Kickback, using a gun that caused Kickback to short out and return to tiny size.

Sparkplug suffered memory damage, and was unable to re-create the Sun-Pak after the prototype was destroyed.
Attack of the Insecticons

Dreamwave comics continuity
Sparkplug was one of the humans chosen to accompany the Autobots back to Cybertron, but was killed in 1999 when the Ark II exploded.

*Sparkplug is mentioned in the Sunbow episode cast list for Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1. Whether this was in error or if he originally had a part in the episode is unknown.

:Voice actor: Chris Latta (US}, Toshio Ishii (Japan)

When Motormaster booms out orders in his hollow, bottomless-deep voice of doom, his Stunticon soldiers listen in very real fear. A cold and brutal tyrant, without an ounce of mercy or care for any lesser being, he considers himself the true "King of the Road." He longs to one day prove his claim by destroying Optimus Prime in a head-on collision, though he fears that someone else might kill Prime before he can. ==Fiction==
Marvel Comics continuity
Motormaster and the Stunticons were given life by the Creation Matrix, at least inadvertently. Bombshell had "bugged" Optimus Prime with a cerebro-shell and, when the Autobot leader unleashed the power of the Matrix to bring the Aerialbots to life, Megatron was able to tap into and divert some of the energy to bring an equal number of his own troops to life. The Stunticons' first mission was to further the Decepticon plans for anti-Autobot propaganda. Recognizing that the Autobot efforts on Earth were stymied as long as the humans could not tell the difference between the two factions, Megatron had taken great efforts to ensure ALL the "giant robots" were hated by the public. When the Autobot Skids selflessly saved a woman trapped by power lines, however, that good publicity threatened his plans. Therefore, Megatron sent Motormaster and the Stunticons out to find Skids. Once they did, the Stunticons drew attention to themselves by demolishing a highway, and then pretended to be "defending" Skids once RAAT forces arrived. Their efforts not only successfully tarnished the Autobot image in the eyes of the humans, but even led to the deactivation and capture of the Aerialbots by RAAT. Heavy Traffic!

Motormaster and his team saw little action after that. Decepticon internal politics caused leadership to change hands several times over the following months, and the Stunticons were ultimately lost in the shuffle.

Animated continuity
:Voice actor: Roger C. Carmel (US), Kōji Totani (Japan)
Motormaster was one of the Stunticons who was brought to life by Vector Sigma, immediately pledging his loyalty to Megatron. Although the Stunticons often fought the Aerialbots, Motormaster's great desire was to off Optimus Prime. The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2

As Megatron searched for the Pearl of Bahoudin in Turkey, he became aware of the Autobots' involvement in the cross-country Europa 2000 ending only miles from his dig site. In order to prevent interference, he commissioned Motormaster and the Stunticons to prevent any Autobots from making it to the finish line. Motormaster personally saw to the disposal of the Autobots' stunt driver, Wheeljack. It was an extended battle between skill and power, but the Stunticon leader eventually caught his prey by crushing him underneath his massive frame. Trans Europe Express

On another mission from Megatron, Motormaster dispatched his fellow Stunticons to collect several scientific components which the Constructicons needed to finish a new Super Weapon. Motormaster himself stole the world's largest and most perfect ruby from its place in a museum. His path back to base was blocked by Optimus Prime himself, giving Motormaster his long-awaited chance to prove he was the true "King of the Road". After he and Optimus rammed into each head-on at full speed, though, Prime only had a slight headache while Motormaster blew out his tires, crumpled his trailer, broke his windows and shattered his ego. Beaten and bruised, Motormaster and his fellow Stunticons were all towed back to the Ark and held prisoner. Unaware of Megatron's full plans for the components, the Autobots conceived of a scheme to infiltrate the Decepticon camp disguised as the Stunticons, using camouflage paint to alter their appearances. To add insult to injury (well, injuries), Optimus Prime took Motormaster's place among the faux Stunticons. After the Autobots left, though, Breakdown managed to vibrate himself loose from his cage and let Motormaster and the others free as well. They merged to become Menasor and swept aside the meager resistance the Autobots put up at the Ark. Flying to Megatron's hidden construction site as Menasor, the Stunticons confronted their impostor and exposed the Autobots' Trojan Horse play. Still, Prime had arranged a double-cross and had tampered with the ruby's properties, causing Megatron's Super Weapon to explode after only a short use. Menasor fled, and the other Decepticons quickly followed suit. Masquerade

When Starscream attempted to overthrow the Decepticons using his personal brigade, the Combaticons, Megatron attempted to summon the Stunticons for aid, but they were too busy with a demolition derby to get involved right away. Eventually, though, their eleventh-hour intervention proved the key to victory. Starscream's gestalt, Bruticus, had already defeated Devastator, but was weakened by the conflict. Motormaster convinced his fellow Stunticons that Starscream wouldn't know when to quit and that they'd better ensure Megatron stuck around. Combining into Menasor, it took them little more than a single hit to bring down the Combaticons' Bruticus form. Starscream's Brigade

Like most Decepticons, Motormaster was left leaderless and near-powerless after the destruction of Unicron and the disappearance of Galvatron. By 2006, he and the other Decepticons had retreated to a burnt-out hunk of a planet called Chaar, a world of ash in ruin. Certain that the Decepticons could be reborn as a fighting force if only they had a leader, Motormaster contributed nearly the last of his energon for Cyclonus's hunt for Galvatron and collapsed on the spot as a result. Still, when the Quintessons arrived in the interim offering energon if only the Decepticons would help destroy the Autobots, Motormaster and the others naturally jumped at the opportunity. When Galvatron returned, though, he first shot Motormaster before ultimately agreeing to go along with the Quintessons anyway. Five Faces of Darkness This might be why Motormaster felt so strongly about Galvatron's inadequacy as Decepticon leader in later months. Along with Swindle and Laserbeak, he eventually confronted second-in-command Cyclonus and demanded that something be done about Galvatron or else there would be mutiny. It seemed to be an empty boast, however, as Galvatron just kept on being crazy. Webworld

Dreamwave Comics continuity
During the start of the war, Motormaster served as Starscream's enforcer. When Starscream took control of the Decepticons after he (supposedly) killed Megatron and Optimus Prime, Motormaster assisted Starscream's attempts to have Scrapper mechaform Iacon...by letting Starscream threaten Scrapper with being mechaformed by Motormaster himself. During the subsequent Autobot assault on the base, Motormaster was on the verge of killing Ironhide and Kup, when Grimlock rammed into him at full speed, sending Motormaster flying into a far-off wall. Grimlock one, Motormaster zero. During the Dark Ages, he joined up with Starscream's Predacons, helping him steal raw energon, only to have Grimlock and the Lightning Strike Coalition steal the energon. Grimlock: two, Motormaster: zero. The War Within: The Dark Ages On the eve of the Age of Wrath, Motormaster was tasked with sniping Ultra Magnus. He failed, but instead he hit Grimlock, though Grimlock ended up surviving. Grimlock: three, Motormaster: zero. The War Within: The Age of Wrath

At some point in Cybertron's recent history, the Stunticons were deemed psychotic and too dangerous to function in society, and as a result were placed into perpetual stasis lock inside of a prison facility. Later, in an attempt to create a diversion while he set his final plans in motion, Shockwave arranged for the release of the Stunticons. They formed into Menasor and ran amok in Iacon for awhile, until Ultra Magnus arrived and began to attack Menasor by insulting the Stunticons individually. Unable to reconcile with this, the five Stunticons began to bicker with each other over whose fault it was that they were failing, temporarily halting Menasor's destruction. At that point, Ultra Magnus is quoted to have said: "'King of the Road' eh? We'll see about that," just before ramming the combiner in the chest while in vehicle mode, forcing Menasor to separate into his component parts and disabling the Stunticons.

Ultra Magnus's attack was significant in that he essentially made a fearless suicide run straight into Menasor, echoing Optimus Prime's head-on collision with Motormaster in the animated continuity. Not only did Magnus succeed in disabling Menasor, but in particular, he damaged Motormaster severely. Magnus's attack showed that Motormaster was bested by an Autobot who considered himself—and was considered by others—to be a lesser version of Optimus Prime. It's likely that the Decepticon's ego will never recover. War and Peace

IDW Comics continuity
Motormaster took up the open invitation to Kaon's discontented populace and journeyed to the secret bloodsport arena to join Megatron in his insurrection against the Senate's control. He was seen in the presence of the Stunticons, suggesting they had already formed a team bond prior to the first major uprising. During the opening battle of the war with Security Services in Kaon, Motormaster continued with his (apparent) goal of being run down by every Autobot leader who turns into a truck when he lept in the way of Sentinel Prime and was flattened by the no-nonsense commander. That 'Con just doesn't know when to quit, does he? Megatron Origin
: Motormaster transforms into a black Kenworth K100 Aerodyne sleeper truck pulling a long, dark-silver trailer. Unlike many Transformers truck toys, his trailer is permanently attached to the cab. Motormaster can assume a base/repair bay mode which can connect to the Decepticon city Trypticon, a feature only documented in Trypticon's instructions. (He can also connect to Metroplex, but this is undocumented for obvious reasons.) His small "roller car" gains relevance in this mode, as it is scaled for the base-mode's ramp. The Japanese release includes a launcher mechanism to propel the car, much like Optimus Prime's Combat Deck propels Roller. (As with Silverbolt, Motormaster's various knock-offs include the launcher.)

: In robot mode, he is armed with a long, purple "cyclone" rifle and a large, silver, vacuum-metalized sword. He also forms the central body of Menasor, with the roller car becoming his chest piece and Menasor's mask covering his face. Menasor's hands and feet were included in Motormaster's box.
The smaller limb-robots all have had packaged samples appear, but no packaged samples of Motormaster or Hot Spot are known to exist, and the two leaders are the hardest of their sets to come across nowadays.
: A redeco of Thunder Clash as Motormaster (called "Menasor" because of trademark issues) was planned as a store exclusive for Universe, but was ultimately canceled. No physical samples of this toy have been found so far, just package art.

Trivia
* In the 2006/2007 Classics line, a redeco of Legends of Cybertron Optimus Prime was intended to be Motormaster, but again, the name could not be obtained. The toy was given the name "Menasor" and the super robot's function of "Super Warrior", effectively making him Menasor, not Motormaster.

* Motormaster has three different pieces of box art. The art on on his Japanese packaging has him transformed correctly, while the art on his individual Hasbro release shows him mistransformed, with his upper legs out to the side instead of down. In what is presumably an attempt to fix this, the art on the Hasbro gift set uses the lower legs from the Takara art, but this leaves Motormaster's upper legs mistransformed.

A Predacon Elder, the cruel and clever Cicadacon is suspected of being very old, indeed. His knowledge of Cybertronian history, especially military history and tactics, is encyclopedic, stretching back even to the era before the Great War. Some suspect he may have once had a Decepticon identity, but if this is true, no records of that identity survive. Regardless of the truth of his origin, Cicadacon uses the stories and rumors to engender fear and respect in his followers. Despite his tactical genius, Cicadacon's long-term strategy against the Maximals has become increasingly unpopular with the more impatient Predacon forces.
