the Generation 1 Autobot Gears

:Gears is an Autobot from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Gears hates Earth, a lush, green planet practically as unlike his cozy, gray, metallic homeworld as possible. He grumbles and complains about being shipwrecked on it -- complains and grumbles to a ridiculous extent, until he becomes a source of amusement, rather than negativity. This is usually his intent -- unlike his fellow Mini Vehicle Huffer, Gears has a desire to help his fellow Autobots see good in a bad situation. Still, he does get depressed from time to time.

Gears is strong and tough, not so much in lifting but in endurance, and carrying heavy loads with little effort, be they energon cubes, disabled Autobots, or potatoes for the farmers' market. He is fitted with infrared vision sensors.

In robot mode, Gears can release controlled bursts of compressed air from his feet, launching himself to altitudes over 100,000 feet, and floating back down. In doing so, he must be careful not to lose air pressure before coming close enough to the ground for a safe landing.

:Italian name: Mulo

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
Shortly after arriving on Earth, Gears teamed up with Spider-Man, using his ability to launch himself upward using compressed air and fly alongside the superhero in an attempt to reach the mountaintop Decepticon fortress. When Gears ran low on power, he began to fall before Spidey caught him in webbing. Although Spider-Man's webbing is extremely strong, the Autobot's weight threatened to break it, and Spider-Man completed Gears' ascent using the webbing for assistance. After a fight with the Decepticons, Megatron caused Gears (and human Sparkplug Witwicky) to fall through a hole in the fortress. Although Spidey was able to rescue Sparkplug, and attempted to catch Gears as he had done before, the added momentum of the fall proved too much strain on the webbing, and Gears crashed to the ground. Gears was quickly patched up enough to tell the Autobots that Megatron had gotten what he wanted (a fuel conversion process) from Sparkplug. His complete restoration was seemingly interrupted when, following recriminations, Ratchet needed to drive Sparkplug to the hospital to treat his sudden heart attack.

Animated continuity
:Voice actor: Don Messick (US), Toshirō Ishii (Japan)

Gears was one of the original crew of Autobots on the Ark spaceship when it crash-landed on Earth millions of years ago. When he awoke in 1984, he was reformatted by Teletraan-1 so that is alt-mode was an Earth-based pickup truck. Not a combatant, he didn't participate in too many of the Autobots most famous battles against the Decepticons, but he did his part despite his complaints. Gears' infrared sensors were useful in capturing Ravage when the Decepticon was caught trespassing at the Autobot headquarters.

Megatron stole a chip from Gears to complete his Solar Needle, a weapon that will pierce the sun itself. The removal of the chip altered Gears' personality from cranky to jovial. Nobody wanted to fix him, but, sadly, if they didn't the Solar Needle would destroy the sun. Tough choices.

Dreamwave Comics continuity
Gears did not feature in the first volume of Dreamwave's Generation 1 series, though it is assumed he was present during the Ark II disaster and the events that followed it, as he is featured in the second volume "War and Peace" alongside other members of Optimus Prime's earthbound Autobots. Presumably, then, he was one of the Autobots too severely damaged by the Decepticons to be immediately reactivated in the first volume.

Coloring books
In The Autobot Smasher, Gears is hauling a load of potatoes with plans to sell them for oil and gas money. He is tricked by the Decepticons into taking a detour, which leads him to their "Autobot Rest Stop" - a car crusher disguised with pillows and a set of curtains. Gears rolls into the Rest Stop and is enjoying himself when Soundwave activates the machine, crushing Gears flat.

Gears is later restored by Ratchet to no ill effect.

(Note: This coloring book was illustrated by Steve Ditko, co-creator of none other than... the amazing Spider-Man! Coincidence? Probably.)

: Part of the first assortment of Autobot Mini Vehicles, Gears transforms into a blue and red "penny racer"-proportioned pickup truck of indeterminable model. The toy was originally from Takara's Microchange line in the same coloration. He was not made available as part of Japan's normal retail Transformers line until the 2004 reissue box set of "Minibots", also containing Bumblebee, Cosmos, Huffer, Powerglide and Warpath.

: There were a few variations of Gears south of the border, where he was known as "Pick-Up". Initial releases had the same plastic colors but gave him a different robot-mode sticker, while later toys had the plastic colors changed to make him a red truck with orange robot parts. In some European markets, a maroon and white version was released, possibly to bring the character of Swerve over without the use of a new mold.

: This mold was used to make the Malignus Pick-Up, the Autobot Small Foot and was retooled to make Swerve.
Warpath is the stereotypical tank commander: loud, boisterous, skilled, confident, devoted to his buddies, and probably a little deaf. His armor is tremendously thick; his skull no less. He loves to show off by splitting hex nuts a mile and a half away, and he has an endless variety of special munitions to load in his prized main gun: cryogenic, acid, thermal, and sonic. His most favorite, however, are the simple explosive shells that go off with a huge explosion, KABOOM!

His gun...how Warpath loves his gun. Prominent and useful in both modes, she has saved his life countless times, and she gets only the best in return. How he loves to line her sights up precisely on a barely visible target, and KAZOWY! blow it to shrapnel with a single well-placed shell. A dud annoys him; a miss is near-fatal embarassment. A mere scratch to his gun's barrel keeps him up, late into the night, polishing it away. When on occasion his gun is damaged seriously enough to impair her function, he is practically inconsolable for weeks.
Warpath (ZING!) had a habit of (BLAM!) interjecting his speech with (WHAMMO!) onomatopoeia. Whether this was a programming feature or personal choice is unknown. His fellow Autobots seemed to tolerate it.

Warpath appeared for the first time in the second season, with no explanation for his arrival.
: Warpath transforms into a General Motors M551A1 Sheridan ARAAV tank. There is a notable paint variation on Warpath: while most releases have black-painted optics, some leave the optics unpainted yet cover his entire faceplate in black.

: In 1986, he was made available as a mail-away item (as he was no longer shipping to retail shelves) in the Digital Doom on the Highway to Destruction flier packed with most boxed Transformers toys. He cost $4 and one robot point.
He complains and grumbles his way through every day, especially since he's been shipwrecked on Earth. If he thought his existence was unbearable before, it's intolerable now, and he'll certainly let you know.

Huffer was part of the original crew of Ark-based Autobots who crashed on Earth four million years ago. In 1984, he awoke and was reformatted into a mini semi truck cab. An engineer and not a warrior, Huffer loathed combat and hated being stationed on Earth as he longed to return to Cybertron. Optimus Prime would often have to motivate Huffer, reminding him to remain courageous in the long fight. During one of the first engagements on Earth, where the Autobots attempted to stop the Decepticons from attacking an off-shore oil rig, Huffer was trapped in the debris. Brawn came to his rescue, cutting Huffer loose from the wreckage.

Damaged in a fall from the top of the Ruby Crystal Mines of Burma, Optimus Prime was encouraged by Huffer, Cliffjumper, and Gears as he painfully tried to transform back into robot mode. More Than Meets the Eye, Part 2

Prime was ever accident-prone, though, and after being beaten down by Megatron and again struggling to transform, Huffer was helpful enough to tow Prime's trailer back to the Ark.

When Optimus Prime authorized Wheeljack and Ratchet to build robot dinosaurs, Huffer insisted that this was a waste of time. After the Dinobots were completed and unveiled, Huffer remarked, "Dinobots? I thought you were supposed to make Dinosaurs!" and laughed. This was followed by an awkward silence.

Though his death was never depicted, Huffer's grave is later mentioned amongst those of the other Autobots who died during the attack on Autobot City aboard their interstellar mausoleum. Along with the mausoleum itself, Huffer's remains were later plunged into a red sun as a side-effect of a Quintesson plot. Dark Awakening

Bummer.

There are rumors that Huffer actually defected. Perhaps he finally found his happiness?

Dreamwave comics continuity
Huffer was a part of the crew onboard the Ark when it crashed into Earth four million years ago while clearing an asteroid in the path of Cybertron.

He was one of many Transformers captured and reprogrammed by arms dealer Adam 'Lazarus' Rook for lease to terrorist organisations and shady governments requiring brutal military might. Fortunately, Autobots under the command of Optimus Prime repaired and re-reprogrammed Huffer and the remaining captive Autobots. Immediately, they were put to work on fighting Megatron's metallic virus which had spread deep into Canadian territory. Huffer was seen to be very gung-ho about starting the blasting process when Wheeljack cautioned the group that the anti-virus requires converting their own interal energy, and he needed complete commitment from them if his plan was to suceed. Prime Directive, Part 5

Soon, the Canadian military arrived. Unfortunately, due to the recent attacks by both enslaved Autobots and Decepticons under the command of Rook, the Canadians attempted to stop the Autobots doing what they percieved to be an attack on their soil. When Wheeljack tied to explain what they were doing (in a rather agressive manner), the Canadians soldiers panicked and fired upon the Autobots. Huffer was blasted by a tank shell while trying to aid the fallen Wheeljack. Prime Directive, Part 6

Notes
*It has been speculated by some fans that, in animated continuity, Huffer may have been created from Orion Pax's friend Dion, the same way and at the same time Prime and Elita One were rebuilt by Alpha Trion.
His mold was originally used for the Microchange series of toys as an "American" truck. The Microchange toyline was meant to depict robots that transformed into toy cars, which accounts for the somewhat cartoonish proportions of Huffer's vehicle modes.

: This mold was used to make Pipes: for the Hasbro line it was extensively retooled, while in Mexico and some European markets, it was straight-redecoed.

*Minibot Team (Multi-pack, 2004)
: Japanese ID number: TFC-12

: Huffer was reissued in a "Transformers Collection" six-pack with Bumblebee, Cosmos, Gears, Powerglide and Warpath. There are no notable differences between the original and the reissue versions.

: This entire set was redecoed to make the G1 GoBots set: Huffer was used to make Road Ranger.
