:Spinister is a Decepticon from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Spinister is terribly mysterious and has been known to wield a gun that separates into two Nebulans. These dumb stubbies are Singe and Hairsplitter, if this really matters to anyone.

This grim air warrior seems far more independent of mind than the common Decepticon, though he doesn't go in for the outright mutiny for which Starscream is noted. When he spots unrecognized potential in the Decepticon ranks, however, he may well bring the would-be warrior under his tutelage without the knowledge or permission of his superior officers.

A closed book to the Decepticons, Spinister is a dark menace to his Autobot enemies. Often the first warning of his approach is the gentle note of a detonating fusion bomb or the delightful hiss of metal boiling away under an assault of charged particles from his beam cannon. How he is so terribly sneaky is unclear, but rumor has it that he has beaten the Romulans by centuries and developed a cloaking device. However, if he has, he hasn't spoken to anybody about it.

Quiet and mysterious, that's how he likes to be, and how he intends to stay. Speaking his mind would prevent the whole mysterious shadow-warrior thing from working. One must wonder how much even his binary-bonded companions know about him.

Also, his name is cooler than Slayride and Sinnertwin combined.

Spinister was recruited into the new Mayhem Attack Squad by Snarler, and placed in charge of training and grading other new recruits to the squad. During a training exercise, a fresh-new warrior named Needlenose went AWOL in the middle of a battle. Spinister went after him, knowing the desertion was punishable by death in the Decepticon Army. He saw promise in the young soldier, though, and so instead faked having difficulty against an Autobot drone he was fighting. Spinister hoped that seeing him in danger would force Needlenose to act, and he was right. Needlenose came back and fought off the drone to "save" Spinister. Because of this, Spinister ignored his temporary loss of courage in the official report, and nominated Needlenose for full membership in the Mayhems, and their mission to hunt down the traitors Carnivac and Catilla. The Hunting Party

Arriving on Earth, the Mayhems confronted Carnivac separately from his new Autobot comrades in the Survivors, and ran him to ground. Way of the Warrior Seeing Carnivac's newfound care for fleshlings, Spinister opened fire into a crowd, committing Carnivac to taking the fire himself in order to protect the humans. Stunned by the gunfire, Carnivac lay wounded as Spinister transformed and was about to pass sentence on him. His fellow traitor Catilla leapt out from nowhere, however, spoiling Spinister's aim. Bludgeon managed to impale the new arrival with his sword, but the Mayhems were then driven off by the Survivors before they could finish Carnivac off as well. A Savage Place

As a top-ranking member of the Mayhem Attack Squad, Spinister joined Needlenose, Ruckus and Windsweeper in serving their commander, Thunderwing, on his quest to possess the Autobots' Creation Matrix. The Mayhems clashed with several Autobot teams on their mission, and Thunderwing's obsession became more pronounced as time went on, and Spinister became less and less willing to serve under such a madman. On the planet VsQs, Thunderwing abandoned Windsweeper to his fate when the Matrix-spawn creature attacked, more focused on his prize than a fellow Decepticon. When their leader ran off chasing the creature, Spinister held back his fellow Mayhems, telling them it was their duty to look after the injured Windsweeper, and let Thunderwing deal with his own business.

After Thunderwing captured the Matrix and arranged for his team to infiltrate the Ark aboard a stolen shuttle, he quickly found the Matrix's own corrupted persona waxing control over his own mind. Spinister tried to warn him of the madness taking over, only to have Thunderwing fire on his own troop. The shock of having shot one of his loyal soldiers drove home the point for Thunderwing, but it was too late, and the Matrix completely overtook his thoughts. After the Autobots managed to drive Thunderwing out of the ship and into the vacuum of space, Spinister and the Mayhems gave up without a fight, wanting no more violence that day. Matrix Quest
While Carnivac was still seeking revenge for Catilla's murder, Spinister and the others set up an island base on Earth while preparing for their next strike. The cowardly Needlenose got on everyone's nerves, though, when the waiting weighed on his circuits enough to compel him to stage a mock emergency drill and test the Mayhems' response time, just in case Carnivac came looking for him. Spinister gave Needlenose a stern rebuke after that, warning him that the next incident would cost him his life. As it turned out, Carnivac HAD infiltrated the base during the commotion, and Needlenose's next round of genuine emergency calls were left unheeded. Cry Wolf The wolf's next strike on Bludgeon did not go as quietly, and he drew the attention of the rest of the base. Instead of risking himself in close-quarters combat, Carnivac's forte, Spinister wisely chose to blast the traitor from a distance, apparently destroying him. Wolf in the Fold The Mayhems were then forced to defend themselves against the combined might of the Survivors and Earthforce, who had come to rescue Carnivac from his insane mission of vengeance. While Bludgeon and the others charged head first into battle, Spinister saw no gain in a warrior's suicide, and attempted to slip away. Unfortunately for him, only Carnivac's shell had been destroyed earlier, and the robot within had survived to take his vengeance on the Mayhems, shooting Spinister, crushing Snarler and then assisting the Earthforce in capturing the remaining Decepticons. Where Wolf?
I'm just curious, was an explanation ever given in regards to Bludgeon's rather... unique battle-damage look in the Stormbringer series? Considering no one else in the series had damage of that extent, it just strikes me as odd.
:Hard to say, but he was shown with the damage just after Shockwave's disappearance on prehistoric Earth, so he's been carrying the wounds around for some time. I'd say at the least he's avoided repairing it, and it's possibly self-inflicted.--Rosicrucian 20:59, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
:That doesn't make sense. It all ends with Bludgeon & co being captured by Earthforce and then escaping from their base. --Detour 06:32, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
::Earthforce doesn't happen until Earthforce itself is introduced. Before that issue, everything works fine, continuity-wise, and there are plenty of normal continuity/UK black and white crossovers. "Cry Wolf!" (#272) and beyond don't happen for over 30 issues after Catilla is killed (#239), so there's also a time gap that helps make that a good separation point. --ItsWalky 15:12, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
:::In regards to issue numbers, I'm at fault here, I just have the pages saved sequentially with no issue number so I wouldn't have known. And what I have is probably some colored reprint since everything is in color (if you want, I can replace that Bludgeon killing Catilla image with a color one when I get home) and at the end of my #239, it says "NEXT: Cry Wolf!"... So you'll have to forgive me for being in the dark. But hey, conflicting ideas aside, between the two of us, we managed to flesh out Bludgeon's page pretty well, wouldn't you say? --74.57.3.251 20:46, 10 March 2008 (UTC) (Detour at work)
::::Goddamn Furman and his goddamn Earthforce. Maybe next time, you wanna make sure you're not putting the info twice in one page, though, since I'd already added the events from "Cry Wolf!" up to "Shut Up!" in the regular UK continuity. --Detour 06:42, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

<br />
I just rechecked the numbers on the AoE issue, it's 226 so it predates Earthforce. Also, according to the narration, it takes place in 1990 so... I have no idea where it'd go, continuity-wise. O.o --Detour 01:35, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
: Yeah, I realized we've got a small problem. That seems to be the earliest Furman started hinting at what he thought he'd be writing in the future, regarding the Decepticon Civil War, and it predates the stuff that absolutely can't possibly happen, IE, the introduction of Earthforce. Thing is, between AoE and "Starting Over," there's all sorts of stuff that interweaves really well. Also in there is Deathbringer, which is referenced specifically in US continuity. I still think "Starting Over" is where the Out-of-continuity stuff begins, but AOE does make that murky. Thankfully, it happens in the future! --ItsWalky 01:42, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

:: AOE present (with Rodimus) has the evil of Unicron at his core. That happens because of Legacy of Unicron, which happens because Unicron attacked Cybertron for the first time in 2005/6. The events that led to Unicron attacking in 1991 occurred at least as far back as US #60-61, at the end of 1989, predating the Decepticon Civil War. Therefore, the Decepticon Civil War and other events being flashed back to in AOE cannot be the same timeline as the DCW from US #72. It's not TFUS, it's not TFUK, it's probably not even Earthforce -- it's the history of an alternate timeline after that timeline split off from the main one, so any AOE stuff should just be tossed at the end of an entry in a little blurb that says, "And in an alternate universe..." To be specific, I would think AOE: Megatron was probably from a timeline where the Mayhems did not attack the Classic Pretenders (and therefore no one shot God in the face) but instead remained on Cybertron and fell under the command of one Megatron or the other. --Xaaron 02:36, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
:::Times like these, I really wish Furman had had more respect for things like continuity (even G2 had inconsistencies with elements established by the G1 comics he'd written). --Detour 06:48, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
:::I've always taken it as read that the events flashed back to in the AoE Megatron, Shockwave and Scorponok chapters were from the "movie future" timeline, before it got erased. The whole story is recounted by Rodimus, and this IS the Rodimus from the "movie future" timeline, so it makes sense that that's when and where he experienced those events. - Chris McFeely 11:25, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Cybertron Unicron = Bludgeon homage?
Myself and Detour are having a debate about whether this toy could be considered a homage to the G1 toy. I cite the head, colour, alt mode and weapons as reasons for. Detour cites that the colour is Unicron's anyhow, that a tank alt mode is too ubiquitous to count as homage evidence, and the weapons are not related at at all.Since I found about the existence of the toy using "homage" and "Bludgeon" as search terms in Google, I think that there should be at least a mention of the toy in either/both trivia sections.Thoughts? Drmick 13:37, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

:The whole skull head thing is referring to the Unicron head that came with Cybertron Primus. The head had a human-like skull where part of Unicron's face was blown off. The Deluxe Unicron represents his partial rebirth... hence the skull. --FFN 13:40, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
::True. That fact does obviate the skull being used as evidence that it was primarily a homage. But secondarily? Drmick 13:57, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
:::His tank mode is apparently based on some anime which I can't remember, but it was a blue or green, organic-looking tank. It doesn't even look anything like Bludgeon's tank. One would assume a tank would have a cannon, so he does. That pointy stuff on him references the parts of Armada Unicron's planet mode (the pincers, the planet buster) and original robot mode (his rings/wings.) The dude is crammed to the gills with stuff from Armada Unicron.
::::Customising tip: If you really want a G1 Bludgeon, get Titanium The Fallen and paint him green, since the toy is based on his IDW Stormbringer design. --FFN 14:09, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
:::::Everything you pointed out is mere coincidential similarities. He shares orange with Bludgeon, but that's because UNICRON is orange. No other reason. He has a skull because he's been resurrected, it brings a bit of an air of macabre to his return.

:::You don't seem to know what an homage is. An homage is when something pays tribute to something else without actually being it. In that aspect, Energon Bulkhead is a Springer homage but Universe and Botcon Springer are not because they are meant to be Springer. Would you say that one of the bazillion Batman figures on the shelves right now is a homage to an old Batman figure from when the very first movie came out? This is the same deal. Your soapbox is packed with "homages" that barely even look like the characters you think they homage, and in Bludgeon's case it's nothing more than a case of coincidence, which can just as easily be used to support that Classics Tank Megatron is a "homage" to Bludgeon.
:::And what you said about googling "Bludgeon" and "homage", the only things I found supporting your theory were one person's comments on a review posted at TFormers, and one guy's message board post on Seibertron. That's it. Some evidence, two random forum posters.
::::PS: FFN, I'm pretty sure Titanium Fallen is based on Stormbringer Megatron and not Bludgeon, considering his bulkier frame and the position of the treads on his back that match Megatron's more than Bludgeon's. --Detour 23:14, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
:::::I've had the homage definition debate elsewhere. But to reiterate my slant, I feel a "homage" means "to pay tribute to". A quick google shows that the word has evolved to mean slightly different things. And yes, thus all modern Transformers could be then considered homages to the G1 line. However, I don't think it is too difficult to see where I am coming from with my ideas (in what I am attempting to do), rather it seems that the idea is considered by many to be pointless/stupid/cheesy etc etc. The debate about my soapbox really belongs on its discussion page. To bring the subject back to Bludgeon: I want a Bludgeon toy (or a homage) for my shelf. I've recently bought CybUnicron to be that toy. Until a better toy comes along, or unless someone can come up with a better one, or unless someone can convince me that CybUnicron really has no resemblance to G1 Bludgeon, then I'm sticking to my guns. Green tanks don't count for two reasons: Bludgeon is rarely seen as a green robot, and realistically green tank = G2 Megatron. Drmick 11:14, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
::::::Well just because you feel it looks like Bludgeon doesn't make it a factual Bludgeon homage because it was not intended as such by the people who designed him.
:::::::You are more than welcome to use whatever you want in your display shelves, heck I have Universe Frostbite as Carnivac and Cybertron Skywarp as Misfire in mine. But to openly declare the stuff a homage on this wiki is 100% wrong. --Detour 20:29, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

::::::::So you do the whole modern thing too? I wonder how many people do that. I appreciate now that some of suggestions cannot go in the wiki proper for the reasons stated on those discussion pages. CybSkywarp needs a coat of pink/lilac (not too dissimilar to the one I used for Spinister?). And Cybertron Snarl is a better Carnivac, no? He can be got quite cheap on Ebay actually. Re: the 100% wrong remark, I take it you mean "100% wrong" as a matter of priciple as opposed to CybUnicron being 100% nothing like G1 Bludgeon? The latter being quite obviously incorrect. Drmick 08:31, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

:::::::::It's not a matter of principle, Drmick, but a matter of definition. You're missing THE key word in your definition: a homage means "to pay tribute to deliberately". No matter how many similarities you find between two toys, it is not a homage unless the later toy was intentionally patterned after the other. That's not a personal interpretation by certain contributors here; that's what a homage IS. --Xaaron 14:18, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

::::::::::Interjecting as an outside observer... no. Though it can be said that Cyb Unicron has many similarities to Bludgeon, in that they are both orange guys with skull faces, helmets with pointy horns and tank altmodes... Cybertron Unicron can not, in any objective sense be called ahomage to Bludgeon, because the term "homage," implies intent, and every single attribute he has in common with Bludgeon can actually be traced as coming from another non-Bludgeon source. -Derik 08:48, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
:Dude, it's a great image. What's wrong with it? We already rely far too heavily on MTMTE images, as has been discussed elsewhere. Any time we can get a good representative image from a source that's not box art, MTMTE, or a character model, we should do it. -- Repowers 16:31, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
:::::Fair use only goes so far, and right now, half of the G1 characters are using MTMTE art, either because there's lack of images we can use or its a particularly good piece of art or the only other art is crap. In this case, the MTMTE art isn't great and the other available image is pretty cool.
Rogue?
Does anyone else have a proble with:Springer is the archetypical rogue; handy in a fight, always ready with a helping hand or a joke to lighten the situation. Someone you can depend to ride in, save the day and be smug about it ? That's not a description of how I'd think of an "archtypical rogue." I'd say such a character would be sneeky, stealthy, prone to backstabing (rogue's do it from behind, remember) and acting outside the law. That's not Springer at all.If anything Springer is the "archtypal action hero". Agree/disagree?
:By all means, make the change. He's han solo, who is a a rogue though, not a hero. arguably, he elements of Han which do not translate to springer make Springer mcuh mroe action hero-y. But I think that the rogue one-man-act-hates-being-tied-down thing nicely addresses the differences in Springer's personality in different continuities. Happy and carefree when he's jsut a warrior, sullen and angsty when he's commending the Wreckers. (he seems to have been a ceerier fellow before he took Impactor's place too, backng up that reading.)

In fan terminology, an homage is a toy that is intentionally designed to resemble an earlier (usually Generation 1) toy or character, without being the exact same character. Noted examples of homages include Energon Downshift (based on Generation 1 Wheeljack) and Energon Shockblast (based on Generation 1 Shockwave).

Sometimes, homages are given different names from their predecessors if the actual rights to the name are lost via trademark murkiness, or if the name has already been applied to a non-homage toy within the same series.

Conversely, in order to protect trademarked names, Hasbro and Takara continue to use the same names over and over again, often on very different toys or very different characters within the official fiction. Since use of the term "homage" within the fandom is almost exclusively in reference to visual similarities, these name reuses alone are not considered homages.

Amusingly, Takara has given homages a new twist with "Ratchet Emergency Green", a redeco of the original Diaclone-based Ratchet toy in the color scheme of the live-action movie Ratchet, and "Ironhide Protect Black", a dual homage to the color scheme of both the toy's Diaclone incarnation and the character's live-action movie incarnation.

Also, the term homage not only applies to toys, but also various things such as or arts.

Notable examples
Set before the war began, the State Games was an inter-city competition created by the Autobot Overlord to facilitate goodwill between the various city-states such as Iacon, Tarn and Vos. Tensions had been rising on Cybertron as new Transformer life was created unabated putting increased pressure on the planet's resources.

Megatron, a citizen of Tarn, was a successful but particularly vicious athlete. Optimus Prime was very much his equal, and the two shared a somewhat acrimonious sporting rivalry.

The games in this story were being held in Tarn. The Vos athletic team broke into Tarn's power generator with the purpose of planting a bomb, destroying Tarn, while at the same time leaving evidence to suggest that it was Iacon who were responsible. The resulting war would decimate Tarn and Iacon, leaving Vos (ruled by a criminal syndicate headed by Starscream) the most powerful city on Cybertron. However the team were caught in the process. The bomb still went off, but not before Vos' guilt became known. Tarn was instantly nearly completely destroyed and the war between Vos and Tarn began.

The commencement of hostilities trapped the athletes and the Autobot Overlord in what was now the frontline of a inter-city war. The Autobot Overlord was ancient and frail, and required frequent care. Megatron and Optimus Prime accompanied the Overlord's two bodyguards Ravage and Nightstalker in attempting to return the Overlord to Iacon through the battlefield. However the fighting became too intense, and Optimus Prime left the other three with the Overlord to go to Iacon alone to gather reinforcements. While Prime was away Nightstalker sacrificed himself in a suicide explosion leaving only Ravage and Megatron to stand guard. Megatron, seeing that Cybertron was about to go through a major political change, left the Overlord to die, with Ravage following suit.

When the war between Vos and Tarn had finished, Megatron convinced the survivors to unite as a new faction, Decepticons, against Iacon, who Megatron was convinced could have intervened to prevent the war.
Items of note
* This issue is prefaced with the title "A Tale from Cybertron".
* Optimus Prime is but a successful Iaconian athlete in this story. The Autobot Overlord seems to be the (possibly figurehead) leader of Cybertron. Emirate Xaaron and High Councilor Tomaandi appear to be Iacon politicians, with General Traachon being the leader of the Iacon military.
* This story tells us how Megatron originally came across his fusion cannon. Notice that he's (intentionally) missing it in all the artwork of this story.
* This story precedes "And There Shall Come...a Leader!" chronologically and retcons that story's stance that Megatron and Prime did not know each other before the war.
* The concept of the Decepticons having their origins in gladiatorial games was visited again in both the Dreamwave and IDW continuities.
* IDW's Megatron Origin is in many ways a retelling of "State Games", using combat games (albeit illegal), economic depression and anger towards the politics of Iacon as major plot points.

Note: Fan speculation back in the day had Overlord as Sentinel Prime. However, other stories set around this time cannot be reconciled with events in this story, as Prime is specifically referred to as "Prime". The use of the term "Prime" as leader of the Autobots was a constant introduced later in the G1 mythos.
