He and Razorclaw take on Ramulus. Magmatron recruited Iguanus, along with Transquito, Spittor, Drill Bit, Manterror, and Razorbeast. Magmatron's plan was to use the abandoned stasis pods on prehistoric Earth to build an army and take over Cybertron. Upon arrival, Magmatron sent Iguanus and the others to watch over the stasis pods as they were activated. Iguanus witnessed the birth of Retrax.

Razorbeast was revealed as a Maximal spy when Maximals started coming out of the pods. Iguanus was put in charge of organizing hunting parties.

Later, Iguanus located a blank protoform into which Ravage's spark would be inserted. He accompanied Magmatron and Drill Bit to capture Megatron and send him back to Cybertron (to appease the Tripredacus Council). They succeeded in the capture, but failed to prepare the transwarp shunt. Grimlock intervened and ripped Iguanus apart.
*Iguanus (Basic, 1996)

: A retool of the basic Megatron mold (or possibly vice-versa), Iguanus transforms from frill-necked lizard to robot mode with a one-step spring-loaded transformation. His removable beast-mode tail hides a non-firing blaster cannon that can be used as a hand weapon.

: This mold was used to make Crazybolt.
*Iguanus (Deluxe Transmetal 2, 1999)

: One of the few non-show Beast Wars characters to get a second new mold, Iguanus transforms into a bio-mechanical frill-necked lizard. His beast-mode head hides a spring-loaded missile launcher that also pops up his frill-plates when activated.

: This mold was used to make Reptilion.

Trivia
* Though he was shown in Japanese Beast Wars catalogue group-shots and given a name, Iguanus himself was never actually released in Japan. The closest he got is his Beast Wars Neo redeco Crazybolt.

Iguanus practices self-love -- specifically, his love for his outer shell. He has become obsessively fascinated by reptiles since becoming a Pretender, and can often be found mooning over his shell whenever he has a spare moment. He has even convinced himself that he has a special rapport with lizards and other scaly creatures. Iguanus often wonders if he could somehow become even closer to the reptiles than he already is. If only there was some way to combine Beast and 'Bot, and keep the action hot...

Fiction
Marvel Comics
After commandeering a genetics research lab on Earth, Scorponok was able to recreate and perfect the science of Pretender shells using synthoplasmic chambers constructed by him and Vorath. Iguanus was one of six Decepticon volunteers transformed by the process into new Pretenders. Pretender to the Throne!

Following the destruction of their mobile starship headquarters, the Decepticons established a new base hidden under the New Jersey dumps. Shortly thereafter, Iguanus was chosen by Scorponok to spearhead a new energy-collecting endeavor by him and his fellow Pretenders. Installing a stormmaker station in the New Jersey swamps, they engineered a massive storm over the surrounding area, then wired then island of Manhattan in order to collect energy for them. Iguanus's task was to attach an electrostator to the top of the Empire State Building when the storm reached critical intensity, channeling and amplifying the electricity down through the building and out through the wired intrastructure of the island, feeding the Decepticon's conductors and destroying half the city in the process. The Pretenders quickly ran into trouble at the stormmaker station, where they were confronted by the Autobot Micromasters. After a brief skirmish, Iguanus left Skullgrin to deal with them while he proceeded on to the Empire State Building. He ran into even more Micromasters while climbing the building, though, and their leader Roadhandler blasted the electrostator off the building's antenna just before the lightning strike. Iguanus lept off the building in a desperate attempt to replace the electrostator, only to take the full lightning force into himself on contact with the device, tearing his body apart and leaving the Decepticons with no accumulated energy. King 'Con!

Surprisingly, he was up and about again real quickly, escorting Scorponok to MacDill Airforce Base to deal with Optimus Prime and the Autobots.

IDW Comics
Iguanus was a member of the "Proto-Pretenders" cult gathered in secret by Bludgeon. Using knowledge of the Regenesis project Bludgeon had procured from Shockwave's files, they concocted a plan to utilize the Ultra-Energon to revitalize Thunderwing and his bio-mechanical grafting process for themselves. After raiding Earth for Ultra-Energon, they spent nearly twenty years in seclusion on Cybertron to revive the awesomely powerful Decepticon scientist under their control, and perfect the bio-carapaces so that they could be used safely. Unfortunately, their timetable was accelerated uncontrollably when first the Autobot crew of the Calabi-Yau and later Optimus Prime and the Wreckers interrupted their work. When the Wreckers besieged their compound, Iguanus retreated to find Bludgeon and warn him of the assault, only to find his leader had jumped the gun and undergone the grafting before it was ready. He dismembered Iguanus before collapsing into madness. If Iguanus survived his injuries, he was taken into custody by the Autobots. Stormbringer (comics)

Ploting not only the destruction of the Maximals but also his fellow Predacons, Tarantulas need a place to make his treacherous plans. Eventually, he set up a lair.

Ficiton
Beast Wars
First lair
After arriving on Earth, Tarantulas made a lair in some underground caves near the crashed Darksyde. While doing recon near the Predacon base, Cheetor was captured by Tarantulas, who intended to drain the Maximal of his mech fluid. However, Rattrap managed to rescue Cheetor, damaging the interior of the lair. And Tarantulas had just gotten his furniture positioned right. The Web

After learning that a stasis pod was reentering the atmosphere, Tarantulas knocked out sensors on both the Darksyde and the Axalon. However, Blackarachnia had managed to track down Tarantulas, comprimising the lair's secrecy. Tarantulas began efforts to locate a new one. Spider's Game

Second lair
The second lair was a series of caverns loaded with energon cubes that Megatron had discovered and sent Tarantulas, Blackarachnia, and Quickstrike to secure. Initially suspecting Megatron's motives, Tarantulas sent out a signal to the Maximals, letting them know where they were going. However, upon inspecting the defensible layout of the caverns, Tarantulas decided that they would be a perfect location for his new lair. When Rattrap and Silverbolt came investigating the signal, Tarantulas left a bomb near the entrance to the cave, and detonated it, making the Predacons believe the entrance was destroyed by the Maximals. The series of events worked out well for Tarantulas&mdash;not only did he have a new lair, but it was easily defended, had a cache of stable Energon, and, most importantly, had been written off by both factions as unusable. Tangled Web

Tarantulas's lair was destroyed when he tried to reprogram Tigerhawk into his service. When the Vok left Tigerhawk's body, Tarantulas paniced, and fired through the Vok, causing the device he used to drive them out of Tigerhawk to fire a blast at him. Colliding with a pair of Energon crystals, Tarantulas's body was destroyed when the crystals exploded, causing the equipment to self-destruct and destroy the lair. Cheetor barely managed to drag Tigerhawk away from the explosion. Other Victories
Primeval Dawn
After faking his own death at the hands of Tigerhawk, while simultaneously exorcising the latter's Vok and grafting them on to himself, Tarantulas set up his treacherous shop once again. It is unknown wiether or not he picked a new location or rebuilt one of his older lairs, as secrecy was no longer a problem. What is known however is that his new lair possessed equipment sophisticated enough to contact Unicron, to revive Ravage and to grow [Razorclaw, Iguanus (bw), and Spittor in big vats of glowy green JaAm.
Notes
* In the second season, Tarantulas's second lair was portrayed as being in the desert, on flat ground surrounding the entrance. However, in Other Victories, the lair was shown as being in a cliff near the ocean.
* Now that you've read this, Tarantulas has to kill you, lest you report it back to Megatron. He'll probably eat you, so be a pal and give him indigestion.
Personality
Did Leo Prime have any actual personality in the Japanese stuff to record as his profile? As of right now it's mostly kinda a recounting of BW2 continuity specific story material rather than a true character profile. We should definately have a real profile whenever the IDW BW Guide comes out (soooon peeaaasse) but I was wondering if there was anything we could say about him personality wise as of now? ::: Wow, franking beer *is* pretty unique behavior. (I don't usually point out spelling, but I just find this one really funny.) ==Name Change: Part Deux==

Question: Now that we know that the Classic "Legends" figures have no character/bio info on the cards (we DO know that right, I'm not imagining it?) don't we have to question if "Leo Prime" is actually the same characters as "Lio Convoy"? I mean, *YES* his deco is definately a homage, but LOTS of Universe toys feature homage-decos and the *exact* same names as existing G1 characters, and we've consistantly and purposely refused to treat them as being new versions of the existing robots here, because there's no official proof/bio/characterization one way or the other. Leo Prime's case is pretty much exactly the same thing isn't it (or possibly even weaker, since in those cases even the names matched perfectly)? Certianly a homage, but with nothing official to confirm it, there's no way to really say he's the same guy from BW2. Not officially. Am I missing something? ZacWilliam 12:16, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

*I agree. The decision to change the name seemed premature to me. What is the basis for saying they are one in the same? --Crockalley 14:11, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

*They do have bios, albeit short ones. Leo Prime's has "Cybertronian Supreme Commander" in it somewhere. Spinning offa this, is there now more solid precedent for renaming Overlord as Gigatron? HOC is at least as valid as LOC, if anything it's actually more detailed. I understand some people are reluctant due to Dreamwave giving their character of Gigatron a completely different backstory than the fictional Overlord ever could have had--however, no material was ever canonically published that linked Overlord to Gigatron. Just interviews with Patyk/McDonaugh about where they'd like to take the character. It strikes me as no more consequential than 'The Greater Ape'. So why not rename?
Hell, in Dreamwave's continuity, Scourge and Cyclonus are completely different robots rather than being reformatted from the seekers or the Insecticons. Should they get different pages, too? It's quite clear that Overlord and Gigatron are meant to be the same character, even if they were portrayed differently in different continuities. There is no reason for it to remain Leo Prime when we've been told it's otherwise. If they change their mind when it comes to the Ascending, then it can be changed back. The character's official name in the fiction he appeared was Lio Convoy. Nothing past that matters. 159.134.162.193
:If you're referring to Furman's blog, that isn't a source of officiality (for lack of a better term) over the name on a toy's package, no matter how much you scream otherwise and call us anti-Japanese. Interrobang 11:37, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
::But the toy is not officially confirmed as being Lio Convoy. He is an autobot, not a maximal, for a start. The name of the character in the fiction he appears in, and the toys that were released, is Lio Convoy. Not to mention the Hasbro Collectors Lio Convoy, which was released in the west, as Lio Convoy. You(the Wiki people) ARE anti-japanese, as fuck, you're practically infamous for it, since other people acknowledge the original name of the character. He could also be called a Maximal as the J Beast wars used the Maximal/Pred symbols, so we know for certain what the english(and probably better for disambiguation) equivalent is. Maximals were also a western invention. Lio Convoy was a Japanese invention, and has never been called Lio Prime in any offical fiction.
::But either way, because we know that the equivalent of a Cybertron in the Beast Era in Japan over here is a "maximal", we know the toy "should" be labeled a maximal. And we still have no confirmation on the other LOC Classics, as far as the fiction is concerned they don't exist. And yes this is an English wiki, but it doesn't have to be an American one. The fact that he's a homage to another character in another continuity is irrelevant. I'm so adement against Leo Prime because Lio Convoy was first, used more, and although both are really shitty names, Japan has an excuse, they don't speak the damn language their naming guys with! Plus, LioConvoy was released in North America in the late 90s, I believe alongside Shadow Panther. Sure it was, if I recall, a mail-away, but it was still a North American release. We can deal quite well with being challenged, but there hasn't really been a challenge here. When the Leo Prime toy was released, it was pretty clearly meant as a US-version of LioConvoy, thus making Leo Prime LioConvoy's US name. Most of the characters we've come to know did not exist prior to Marvel's treatment during the development of the Transformers brand. --Rosicrucian 23:41, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
:::::::: The Diaclone "characters" weren't even characters at all but piloted mechs. They were turned into something different, something decent, with some care to it. It's not the same thing as purposely setting out to strip elements of another culture from their product. It's laughable to compare creative process to doing something that's probably at least, in part, to piss off Takara fanboys.<small>—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 193.120.116.179 (talk • contribs).</small><!-- Template:Unsigned -->
:::::::::Okay, then I'm really not sure what you're referring to here. So I'm going to fall back on my original point of "Calling things Convoy in US continuity makes no goddamned sense." In Japan, they call them Convoys. In America, they're Primes. We don't have to mimic what amounts to bad translation birthing an Engrish term. As I said, it just muddies the waters and makes the terminology even less logical. Given that this is a character with US fiction continuity which will be added to further this very month, it doesn't matter particularly what they call him in Japan other than as a note of "Japanese Name: Lio Convoy" as with other characters who have different Japanese names.

:::::::::Unless of course Furman surprises us and introduces the term "Convoy" to his Beast Wars continuity in The Ascending and the profile books. At that point, we're stuck with it. It'll be dumb, but it'll be official and I will take my lumps accordingly.--Rosicrucian 00:05, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Lio Convoy [...] means they can introduce the Convoy council from Japanese Beast Wars

Er... what? ...they're the Maximal Council of Elders, aren't they? Are you actually suggesting they're a separate body? The Universe comics even gave the elders robes patterned after the Convoy Council. -Derik 00:13, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
This naming thing isn't part of an anti-Japan bias. (Though I admit the wiki has one.) It's about trying to figure out what the damn character's name is in English continuity. A lot of Japanese characters have different names in English vs. Japanese. This one's a bit odd since the English name is being declared/confirmed 9 or 10 years after-the-fact... but Ricochet got an English name 17 years after he got a Japanese one. It happens. -Derik 00:13, 15 August 2007 (UTC)<div id="wikia-credits"><br /><br /><small>From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki, a Wikia wiki.</small></div>

Added one of my own, though that one might be better. I just didn't feel like photoshopping. Made a brief manga summary with a footnote about proper continuity. :No, I'm afraid not. :( I've only *seen* random scans. I know mostly that the manga was a comedy-relief effort much like BWII (why the Japanese insisted on interjecting comedy into Beast Wars I haven't a fucking clue), filled with lots of bad and goofy character redesigns. Tigartron wore samurai garb, Rattrap was turned into Pikachu, Cheetor was...totally fucking wierd-looking, etc. This site is the best I can do for scans at the moment: http://www.dvandom.com/bb99.html I am forever monitoring eBay, waiting to pounce on the first Beast Wars manga that shows up (so far all I've ever seen are guide books). --DrSpengler 18:44, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
: I don't think the "Tranny" is a problem. Most of the captions on the site are smart-aliky (sp?) or sarcastic. The "Tranny" mearly pokes fun at the fact that Airazor was Female in all of Hasbro's BW material, but was male in the Japanese dub or BW, and female in Japan's Beast Wars Metals manga. That's one character being either male or female in Japan depending which of the offical media you looked at. Even when Hasbro changed the gender of a TF (C Override), the change was kept constant (no Hasbro material with Override as a male). --FortMax 19:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Primarily used for recon and surveillance due to her aerial alternate mode, Airazor's talents are a great asset to the Maximal cause. She's calm and confident, but also adventurous and brave, with a healthy supply of dry humor. Her aerial skill in either mode, incredibly sharp eyesight and steady aim make her a dangerous opponent.
Due to the circumstances of her "birth," she sees Rhinox as something of a father-figure and Cheetor as the sibling she never had. She devotes most of her efforts, however, to taming the wild yet gentle Tigatron. The Predacons who stole the Golden Disk were pursued by Unit 2, who was granted clearance from Maximal Defense Command to commandeer transport. The Maximal who would become Airazor was boarding her ship, Chromia 10, when Unit 2 approached and demanded use of it. "Airazor" at first refused, but suggested she was open to ... persuasion. The call of adventure captured her interest, and instead of handing over Chromia 10 to Unit 2, she allowed him to hitch a ride, piloting it herself.

Chromia 10 intercepted the Predacons' ship, Darksyde, which was engaged in battle with Axalon and guarded by a mysterious third ship. During the ensuing firefight, Chromia 10 was badly damaged. Optimus Primal had their Sparks remotely uploaded to blank protoforms in Axalon's cargo hold, which saved their lives, but severely damaged their core mainframes. Dawn of Future's Past
(This story is a retcon, as Airazor was originally treated as a newborn protoform in the Beast Wars animated series. Rhinox deftly operated the stasis pod's controls and Cheetor offered up his own components to repair it. She and Tigatron started to team up more frequently, a prospect Airazor seemed to welcome, but Tigatron preferred to work alone. Their first big adventure together came when a flying island paradise was discovered. The island, however, was covered in booby-traps which were triggered by the use of energy weapons. Airazor rescued Tigatron when he was ambushed by Predacons on the island, but she was damaged badly. Tigatron carried her on his back, refusing to leave her behind. The island was ultimately destroyed, much to the sadness and outrage of Tigatron, and he would have secluded himself from the other Maximals further if not for Airazor's concern. The Trigger, Part 2

Soon after, the Predacons beat Tigatron to another stasis pod, reprogramming it and unleashing Inferno. Once again, Airazor tried to work with Tigatron, but, once again, he insisted that he works alone. Airazor commented that sometimes you can be too alone. She was right, because then Tigatron got shot up a lot. Nearing death, Tigatron was saved by the arrival of Airazor and Optimus Primal. Spider's Game

After the realization that the aliens who seeded their planet with traps and energon were returning to destroy it, the Maximals and Predacons entered a truce. Optimus Primal used Airazor to try to sneak Rattrap into the Predacon base to find out what Megatron was up to, but Megatron, of course, found them on his scanners and politely asked them to leave. Unbeknownst to Megatron, the ploy was a decoy for Tigatron's infiltration. The aliens arrived and a new alien structure was built, trapping Airazor, who was tortured. Optimus Primal forced his way inside, with the help of the Predacons, and traded himself to the aliens for Airazor. After Primal was scanned and briefed by the aliens, they transformed the planet's artificial second moon into a Planet Buster, which fired upon the planet, slowly igniting the unstable energon.

After the destruction of the Vok's Planet Buster, Airazor and Tigatron left together to find the rest of the missing stasis pods scattered across the planet. While on their search, the two Maximals discovered not only a remarkably beautiful valley, but a strange plant. As the two looked into each other's eyes and held hands in quiet celebration, the plant transformed into another Vok device, and as they clasped hands, declaring their love to exist beyond the throes of death, the two were absorbed and shot into space. Cheetor arrived, but was too late, loudly protesting the loss of two of his best friends. Other Visits, Part 1

Airazor and Tigatron were kept in a form of stasis until near the end of the Beast Wars, when they were merged together in the powerful being Tigerhawk. Tigerhawk returned to Earth as the emissary of the Vok to stop the deterioration that the Beast Wars was causing to the timestream, his first act being to destroy the Darksyde, sending the Predacons scrambling. Tarantulas managed to capture Tigerhawk and removed the Vok's influence from his frame (and absorbed it into himself), letting Airazor and Tigatron's sparks inhabit Tigerhawk's body. Tigatron's voice was dominant, but Tigerhawk's personality and mannerisms were shared. Other Victories
Airazor ended up having to rescue Cheetor, who had darted off ahead of them and gotten blasted. After the battle was resolved, she and the other Maximals fled, pretending to be beaten by the timid Fractyl to increase his standing in Megatron's eyes. Critical Mass

Though the Beast Wars were over, the threat to the timestream was not. Tarantulas, presumed destroyed, existed in a new, undead form that was fueled by his new Vok powers. The remaining Vok assembled warriors to end this threat, creating Primal Prime and giving new Transmetal bodies to the extant Sparks of Airrazor and Tigatron.

After awakening a stranded stasis pod containing Ramulus, opening a second pod triggered an ambush by Spittor, Iguanus, Razorclaw, and a reborn Transmetal 2 Ravage. Airazor immediately saved Tigatron's life, knocking Spittor aside before Tigatron would have unwittingly come in contact with Spittor's body, covered entirely in cyber-venom. This maneuver left her vulnerable to Ravage's gunfire, knocking her out of the air.

The battle ended catastrophically, and Ramulus, Airazor, and Tigatron were forced to carry a critically-wounded Primal Prime back to the Ark after Tarantulas ripped the Matrix of Leadership from his chest. As Airazor and Tigatron conferred with the seemingly absent Vok, Airazor experienced great pains due to her battle wounds.
In the Beast Wars Metals manga, Airazor was changed into a Transmetal rather than being captured by the Vok aliens. In this manga, Airazor is a girl, presumably because her transmetal toy has boobies.

Toward the end of the manga, Airazor's spark became seperated from her body, with her body becoming host to a malevolent force. The evil Airazor did battle with Tigatron, who did not want to fight the robot he loved. With no other option, Tigatron gave the evil Airazor one of his katana and knelt down. As the evil Airazor struck him with the sword, the real Airazor's spark entered Tigatron's body. In cyber space, the two embraced and vowed never to be apart again. As their sparks merged, they became Tigerhawk.

*In the Japanese dub of Beast Wars, Airazor was turned into a boy as a means to (hopefully) increase toy-sales. For the TV series, his relationship with Tigatron was played off somewhat differently to avoid complaints of homosexuality. Tigatron was presented as a samurai retainer with protective feelings towards his young ward; their closeness addressed in a "brotherly" sort of way. Despite that, there was still enough innuendo left-over for the gender-bending to become unsettling. The Japanese script's near-relentless "jokey" tone didn't help.

* Airazor's gender in the Hasbro line is due to Beast Wars story editors Bob Forward and Larry DiTillio's insistance. The original Airazor toy wasn't developed with a specific gender in mind, and Bob & Larry wanted a larger female presence in the show, and the Airazor toy seemed as good a choice as any. They requested the change early enough that the toy's packaging bio could have its pronouns changed to female. The later Transmetal version of Airazor was the first American-released Transformer mold created to represent a female character.

* Note the name of Airazor's ship in Dawn of Future's Past, the Chromia 10. "C-10" is a reference to her original toy's Japanese ID number, and not to being "case fresh"... as is obvious from her dialogue.

* The Dawn of Future's Past Club exclusive toy is only sorta technically the second Club exclusive toy. :Airazor is a Maximal from the Beast Era portion of the Generation 1 continuity family. She has also been referred to as the Chromia 10 Pilot, and Wingsaber

She shares his love for the beautiful planet on which the Maximals are stranded, and it is on this planet where their destiny will be forever intertwined.

Her stasis pod damaged upon crashing to Earth, Airazor was able to come online due to the genius of Rhinox and the bravery of Cheetor. Rhinox deftly operated the stasis pod's controls and Cheetor offered up his own components to repair it. Immediately out of the pod, she outmaneuvered and destroyed Terrorsaur; her aerial beast mode, at the time, made her the only Maximal other than Optimus who could fly. The Spark

Shortly afterward, however, Tigerhawk was killed in a standoff with the Nemesis after Megatron retrieved it from the ocean floor.
Somewhere near the end of the first year of the Beast Wars, before the Planet Buster ignited the planet's energon, Airazor, Rhinox, and Cheetor overheard a battle between Fractyl and Packrat.

: For its Takara release, it was available both as an individual and in an "Aerial Showdown" Vs-pack with Insecticon.
* Airazor (Video pack-in, 1997)

: The original Airazor toy was given a similar but darker redeco, and packaged with a VHS tape containing the episodes "Aftermath" and "Coming of the Fuzors, Part 1".

: Transmetal Airazor transforms into a mechanical falcon, with a third "seaplane" mold with fold-down pontoons. In robot mode, the chromed beast-mode backplate can fold around it for a "shield" mode.

: The Japanese version of this toy is largely identical, but the yellow plastics were replaced with a bright orange. The "AIRAZOR" tampograph on its chromed shields was also changed to "CYBERTRON" with the Maximal faction symbol. It was available both as an individual and in a two-pack with Quickstrike.

* Airazor (Deluxe Transmetal, 2000)

: One of the final releases of the normal Beast Wars line, Airazor's Transmetal toy was given a tweaked deco and released as part of the so-called "Fox Kids" assortment of Deluxe Transmetal redecos. Again, its redeco was not as drastic a change from the original as the others in the series.

: This version of Airazor was made available in Japan as a toy-show exclusive along with the "Fox Kids" versions of Transmetal Cheetor and Rattrap.
Trivia

She was actually shipped at the same time as Astrotrain, but he was the first toy advertised.

Well, the Convoy Council and the Maximal Elders would appear to be the same thing, and Great Convoy is always shown in the forefront of the Convoy Council (he lead the strike against Unicron in Neo). Not sure how the US interpretation of the High Council relates to Japan's Convoy Council, though. Lio Convoy and Big Convoy are shown to be a part of the High Council in The Gathering, though they're most-certainly well-beneath the rank of Great Convoy and the Convoys shown with him in Neo. So I dunno. --DrSpengler 05:39, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

I guess I'll leave that up to you since I'll likelynevr be able to read those. So then, once this comic comes out and if it conflicts with Japanese continuity, would it be a good idea to retitle this article "Convoy Council" and just keep the two seperate? Or should there just be two sections (US and Japanese) as "Convoy Counsil" was their name for "Maximal Elders"? Or...do you just wanna cross that bridge when we get there? --DrSpengler 05:50, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
: Well, technically, we already have a non-Convoy Council Maximal Elders already, in the Universe books. There, the Maximal Elders consist of Magnaboss, Airhammer (I think), and some other BW guys.
Action Masters are Transformers that traded in their ability to transform to become stronger, faster, and more alive. As the Autobot/Decepticon war drained more and more of their resources, a new source of fueling, Nucleon, was discovered which would grant Transformers amazing power, but at a cost. To compensate for their lost ability to transform, the Action Masters built transforming partners and (massive) vehicles to aid them in battle.

A few Action Masters managed to retain (or possibly regain) the ability to transform; they are known as Action Master Elites.

Fiction
Toy packaging blurb
According to the toy packaging Optimus Prime went searching for new energy sources and, within the heart of a black hole discovered Nucleon: a miracle fuel that made Transformers stronger, faster, and more alive, but cost them the ability to transform. Soon the Decepticons stole the technology and created Action Masters of their own.

This story was later referenced with the Japanese release of Nucleon Quest Convoy, a black repaint of Powermaster Optimus Prime who was given the backstory of being Prime specially outfitted for this trip into the black hole.

Marvel Comics continuity
Grimlock heard rumors of a new miracle fuel on the planet Hydrus 4. Against orders he stole the non-functioning bodies of his fellow Dinobots and headed there to find out. What he descovered was a ruined world filled with creepy, obsessive, rotting zombie-like beings warning him that it was all because of Nucleon. Being Grimlock, he then went ahead and used the fuel anyway, first on himself then to revive his fallen teammates.

Grimlock soon found parts of his body inexplicably seizing up, and began to fear that he should have listened to the creepy dying robots after all. After returning to the Ark Grimlock used the Nucleon to repair all the damaged Autobots in the ship's medical bay (as well as Megatron, whom he didn't know was there). Following the Transformers battle with Unicron Grimlock froze-up entirely. It was then that Hi-Q (in the process of mergeing with Optimus Prime) saw with "Powermaster eyes" that Grimlock wasn't malfunctioning, but changing. He used his Powermaster abillities to speed-up the process and Grimlock burst forth in his new, more-powerful Action Master form.

:(Note: Grimlock is the only actual Action Master to appear in the US comics. Other Action Master toys are represented, but not having been changed by Nucleon they are likely not actual Action Masters. Simon Furman has commented that if the comic book had continued we would have seen other Transformers become Action Masters, and we also would have seen a follow up to the hints that Nucleon effects everyone differently, with some Transformers being affected by it in various alternate ways.)

Japanese continuity
Optimus, and Megatron's pre-G2 bodies share a striking similarity to their Action-Master toys. Likewise Optimus Prime has been documented as searching out a New Energy source called Nucleon that's located within a black hole. Finally, Optimus Prime's Actionmaster was sold with New Years Convoy, and described as the intermediate form between Prime's various G2 Bodies.

Fandom reception
:I DEFINITELY like my transformers to transform. Down with the action masters. --Posted to alt.toys.transformers by Josh Freeman Frankel, 02-25-1994

The Action Master toyline, depicting the obvious oxymoron of "Transformers who don't transform," generated initial ire from some fans. This was magnified as Action Masters were released in the final year of the original Transformers toyline in the US. When Transformers was summarily cancelled in North America, some fans blamed the gimmick for the death of the franchise (despite the wide variety of other factors that doubtlessly were involved).

One aspect Action Masters is notable for, however, is the mass reintroduction of "classic" characters. New toys for old characters was not a theme the original toyline visited very often, and so to have a single subline with so many recurring favorites was, at the time, a novelty. In addition, the classic characters were designed to more closely resemble their cartoon counterparts. For much of the Season 1 and 2 cast, the original figures having been designed years before they were stylized and simplified for the cartoon, these Action Masters were the closest likenesses of their fiction representatons ever.

As with many other changes to the Transformers brand, initial hostility towards Action Masters from the fandom eventually became less intense, and diversified into a broad range of opinion. Many of the most in-demand vintage (and therefore expensive) Transformers toys are Action Masters, and new characters from this subgroup are still harkened back to in newer toylines. For example, Axer shows up in the Robots in Disguise toyline, Armada Overload has design elements based on Rollout, and Cybertron Smokescreen's colors are a partial homage to Rad.

Kup is a tough old coot. He's almost as old as rust, in fact, and he was plinking Decepticons with acid bursts from his trusty musket laser long before most of you turbo-revvin' young punks were born. In his day, lasers didn't need to use light; they did whatever they were told to do and liked it.

He's probably had a thousand adventures, has Kup, and he'll be glad to relate a story of any one of them at any time to a willing audience. The Dinobots love Kup's war stories, and don't seem to mind when he inadvertently leaves a piece out or changes the story between retellings. Old memory chips'll do that to you. Other Autobots can be less patient, and Kup finds this disrespectful and irritating. If there's one thing Kup dislikes it's when young punks don't respect their elders. If they'd only listen they might learn something. Hot Rod is one of the worst offenders in this way, but he's a good ladbot and Kup will straighten him out sooner or later, even if it takes a tank of Sharkticons.

Occasionally, Kup's vast experience gets in his way. When a situation doesn't remind him of anything, he has trouble figuring out what to do. This doesn't happen very much.

He's a Pisces

Though it is not yet established when Kup joined the Earth-bound Autobots, he was stationed at Autobot City during the 2005 invasion by the Decepticons. He was supervising construction efforts undetaken by Huffer and other workers when this work was interrupted by an impetuous drive-through by Hot Rod. Kup was determined to straighten out the adventure-seeking youth.

After the Decepticons began their attack, Kup and Hot Rod were trapped outside of Autobot City's fortress-like defenses. Thanks to an attempted hull breach by the Insecticons, Kup and Hot Rod entered a small gap in one of Autobot City's heavy blast doors -- in the process, Kup crunched Kickback's skull by running over it.

Inside the city, Kup and Hot Rod joined Arcee and Springer in rigging an explosives launcher into place to help defend against the might of Devastator. With the arrival of Optimus Prime the next day, the tide of battle was turned and the Decepticons were defeated -- but at a terrible price.

Years later on the planet Nebulos, Kup encountered the Nebulan resistance against The Hive. Using Targetmaster technology stolen from the Decepticons, Kup was partnered with the Nebulan Recoil, who apparently then chewed his ear off about their leader, Optimus Prime.
When Optimus Prime and Megatron disappeared in a prototype Space Bridge Accident, Kup followed his unit to the Lightning Strike Coalition offshoot of the Autobot faction.
