[[Image:G1 cartoon Autobots fly.JPG|right|200px|thumb|A rare instance of flying.]]
Robot-mode flight powers are an innovative power that allows [[Transformer|Transformers]] without a flight-based [[alternate mode]] to fly while in robot mode. The [[Decepticon|Decepticons]] make good use of this power.

Sometimes the [[Autobot|Autobots]] have them....sometimes they don't. Most often they display them early in Season 1 of the US cartoon, particularly the pilot. It is uncertain if they require external equipment to fly; several times the Autobots use strap-on jet packs or rocket packs, but sometimes they don't.

Robot-mode flight was prevalent in the post-movie episodes, in which the focus was shifted to space (perhaps, taking a hint from the Gundam franchise.) Although some characters could not fly under the influence of a planet's gravity, ''everyone'' seemed to possess the power of flight in deep space.

==Fiction==
===Marvel Comics continuity===
Transformers did not demonstrate robot-mode levitation-type flight.

===Generation 1 cartoon===
Robot-mode flight powers were a technological innovation that allowed the Decepticons, who had just mastered the art of [[Transformation]], to start a [[Great War (G1)|new war]] and battle the Autobots for supremacy of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. Their initial attacks were not a matter of public knowledge, and some Autobots, such as [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Orion Pax]] and [[Dion]], admired them for their innovations. This admiration was ended when [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] blasted Orion, Dion, and [[Elita One|Ariel]]. It was to Megatron's detriment, however, for [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] rebuilt Orion and Ariel into [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and [[Elita One]]. {{storylink|War Dawn}}

Eventually, the Autobots also mastered robot-mode flight powers, and they used them to reach an oil rig which the Decepticons were plundering. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}} Ironhide and Bluestreak pursued the fleeing Decepticons into the air, though Skywarp had little difficulty shooting down Ironhide. Optimus required the use of [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]]'s rocket pack to catch up to the space-bound [[Decepticon space cruiser|Decepticon ship]] shortly afterwards, implying a limit on the speed or range of his flight capabilities. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 3}} Sideswipe and [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]] also used robot-mode flight powers in their use of [[jet judo]] against [[Seeker|Seekers]] attacking the [[Ark (G1)|Autobot base]]. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

The Decepticons' own flight capabilities have known to fail them at times too. In one instance, under a barrage of firepower, Optimus and the Autobots drove the Decepticons back until they fell down a canyon into lava, instead of simply flying out. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}}

The Autobots' ability to fly in robot mode effectively vanished after that. To reach Dinobot Island, Optimus Prime and a crew of Autobots used strap-on jetpacks. Even Autobots with flying alternate modes did not seem able to fly in robot mode, though [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]] seemed able to maneuver in space while in robot mode.

The newly created Dinobots could fly in robot mode, an ability they consistently demonstrated throughout their history. Their creator, [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]], was also shown flying in robot mode apparently unassisted, an ability his on-package [[bio]] claims for him. {{storylink|S.O.S. Dinobots}}

In the years following the defeat of Unicron, a number of Autobots were seen to fly through space without any visible aid or means of propulsion.
Despite the Autobots' rare display of this ability, some claim they do not have it at all. Early in this series, the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacons]] had a tactical advantage due to the imbalance of flight-capable individuals in their faction. Initially, only [[Optimus Primal]] could provide air support for the [[Maximal|Maximals]], and then only in robot-mode, which was risky in the [[Energon (fuel)|energon]]-rich environment. However as more [[Protoform|Protoforms]] were formatted and pressed into service, particularly [[Airazor (BW)|Airazor]] and [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]], the balance of forces became more even.

Sufficient volumes of energon itself, of a certain level of instability, are said to have the ability to cause large objects to float {{storylink|Power Surge}}.

[[Transmutate]] had an apparently unique flight mechanism: it extended a crystalline object from within its body, and when the crystal was exposed to air, it gave off an intense energy field and then caused its user to levitate. Since Transmutate was a malformed, incomplete design, this might have been a display of widespread Transformer flight technology that otherwise would always be internal and unseen.

===IDW comics===
Back before the war, information on scientific breakthroughs in levitation/"repulsors" that could lead to robot-mode flight abilities caught the greedy optics of Senator [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]], who manipulated the stock to take control. Given that he offered a variety of war-tech to the fledgling Decepticons under Megatron, this may be intended as a reference to or origin for their robot-form flight abilities; however, the Decepticons have demonstrated no such abilities in the IDW continuity. This may be an artifact of this storyline's planning and even possible scripting during the latter days before the [[Dreamwave Productions|Dreamwave]] bankruptcy.

===Transformers Animated===
Autobots did not possess flight, save for limited jumps using booster jets. However, the capture of the Decepticon Starscream allowed the Autobot [[Ministry of Science]] to reverse-engineer flight protocols and implant them in a pair of energon refinery maintenance bots. The result was [[Jetfire (Animated)|Jetfire]] and [[Jetstorm (Animated)|Jetstorm]], whose origins as a split protoform granted them other new abilities as a result of the process, including becoming a [[combiner]]. {{storylink|First (and Second) in Flight}}
'''Jetfire'''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s not what he used to be. His body went south years back. His bunny is dead on the wheel. He's got rust in places he didn't even know he had. Basically, Jetfire's old! An ancient Decepticon [[Seeker (ROTF)|Seeker]], Jetfire was around long before the war broke out, and unlike many, came to see his "comrades" for what they were. This caused him to defect to the Autobots, something virtually unheard of. He's a fine asset, powerful and possessing the ability to teleport across great distances. This is slightly offset by the fact he's so old, his processor gave up the ghost millennia ago. These days he has a hard enough time remembering his name. It makes him a bit crotchety and also leaves him with the nagging feeling he's forgotten something important.
In the distant past, the [[All Spark (Movie)|All Spark]] Cube created [[Thirteen original Transformers|a race]] of powerful, trans-dimensional beings as the first inhabitants of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. The Cube gave these beings mighty powers, as well as terraforming their world, but it was not limitless, and gradually became depleted. The first beings learned that the All Spark's power could be replenished by harvesting the energy of stars, but they were unable to locate new stars to suit their purposes, despite their amazing ability to travel between dimensions. Once again, the Cube came to the rescue, creating a race of workers, who had the ability to change their shape.

Jetfire was among the very first of these new beings, a "[[Seeker (ROTF)|Seeker]]" with the ability to travel across the vastness of space in search of new suns. Once located, he would lead others and his masters back to it so a [[Solar harvester|harvester]] could be constructed to drain the energy of these stars, thus replenishing the All Spark. {{Storylink|Defiance issue 4}} It is assumed that at some point during the civil war on Cybertron, he sided with [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]], the new protege of Jetfire's only surviving ancient master, [[The Fallen]].
{{spoiler|Revenge of the Fallen (film)|7/24/09}}

For many years, a dormant Jetfire had hidden in his alternate mode at the [[wikipedia:Smithsonian Institution|Smithsonian]] [[wikipedia:National Air and Space Museum|National Air and Space Museum]], until [[Seymour Simmons]], [[Sam Witwicky]], [[Mikaela Banes]], and [[Wheelie (ROTF)|Wheelie]] broke in with a small fragment of the [[Allspark]]. The surge of energy awoke him, and the cantankerous old robot wandered outside, pausing only to bang his head on the door. Confused and disoriented, only the efforts of the humans and ex-Decepticon brought his senses back. Jetfire revealed that during the war he had joined the Autobots and upon hearing the name of the Fallen, he teleported the entire group (including [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]] and [[Skids (ROTF)|the]] [[Mudflap (ROTF)|twins]] to Egypt, where he told them the story of the Primes, the Fallen, and first contact with Earth. He revealed that only a Prime could kill the Fallen, and was distraught to hear of Optimus' death. After Sam hit upon the idea of using the Matrix to revive Prime, Jetfire gave him the only clue to find the Tomb of the Primes.

During the final battle, Jetfire arrived and attempted to "stick" the landing, which didn't go quite as he planned. He immediately decided to "show how they brought the pain in my day", slicing Mixmaster in half, and crushing his upper torso. He was critically wounded by [[Scorponok (Movie)|Scorponok]] and although he managed to kill the Decepticon, the injury was fatal. As he lay dying Jetfire, who felt that during his entire life he'd never done a thing worth doing, he persuaded a wounded [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus]] to take his parts and "discover a power like you've never known". Ripping out his own spark core, Jetfire died. With help from [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]] and [[Jolt (ROTF)|Jolt]], Jetfire's remains were fused with Prime, who became more powerful than ever before and defeated the Fallen. {{storylink|Revenge of the Fallen (film)|Revenge of the Fallen (film)}}
: [[Fast Action Battler]] Jetfire is a simplified, roughly Deluxe-sized toy of Jetfire. In vehicle mode, he transforms into a sort of cute, super-deformed SR-71 Blackbird jet. As with most ''Transformers'' toy jets, he has a fair bit of undercarriage junk from his robot mode, though not to the extent of the Leader class toy. In robot mode he has a reasonably accurate depiction of Jetfire's design, though his right arm ends in a spring-loaded projectile launcher shaped like a rotary cannon.
{{-}}

==Notes==
* Jetfire's ancient cybertronian vehicle mode as seen in [[IDW Publishing]]'s "[[Defiance issue 4]]" bears more than a passing similarity with the starship ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]'' from ''[[Beast Wars]]''.
* Jetfire is one of the few movie Transformers to mention having [[Relatives|a family]]; in fact, he claims his father was [[Scrounge|''the'' wheel]].
* In the film, Jetfire seemed to say that the reason he was extremely "elderly" was that he has gone for too long without an adequate supply of energon. Well, the fact that he was one of the first Transformers ever to live probably contributes a little; but at least the low energon explains why he is 'slowly falling apart and dying' as opposed to other 'old' bots like [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]].
* According to him (and demonstrated as well), he can access a [[Space Bridge]] to transport himself and others across vast distances in mere moments. {{storylink|Revenge of the Fallen (film)}}
'''Scrounge''' has a special arm. There is no other like it.

He is a lot like [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]]—he is relatively small, weak, and over-eager to prove himself to the other Autobots; he's a passable spy thanks to the fact that he has a special arm (there is no other like it) specially designed for surveillance; he is yellow. Unlike Bumblebee, with his eagerness to please and general excitability, he has a habit of imagining any little bit of info he stumbles across into a huge and vital revelation that will change the course of the [[Great War (G1)|war]].

The Autobots have heard him cry [[turbofox]] a few too many times, and so treat any info he uncovers with a good helping of doubt. Even his friend and partner [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]] tends to treat him as a useless, tag-a-long loser.
===Marvel Comics continuity===
[[Image:Scroungealtmode.jpg|left|250px|thumb|He gets around, nyuk nyuk.]]
When Scrounge actually turned up a lead on really important information (the location of the [[Ark (G1)|Ark ship]] that was lost [[MYA|millions of years ago]] with most of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron's]] [[Huffer (G1)|finest]] aboard), no one paid attention. And so in another bid to prove himself by sneaking into [[Darkmount]] and spying on the [[Decepticon|Decepticons]], he wound up captured, disarmed (literally) by [[Straxus (G1)|Straxus]], and thrown without a second thought into the [[smelting pool]].

[[Image:Scroungedisarmed.jpg|right|150px|thumb|And thus the Armmasters were born!]]
Blaster belatedly came to save his little buddy, who was tragically little more than a melting torso by that point. Scrounge died a heroic death getting the Autobots the info, making them realize that they misjudged him, and leaving Blaster with a whole lot of angst, anger, and guilt to work through by killing as many Decepticons as he was able and generally being a hardass. {{storylink|The Smelting Pool!}}

Scrounge's death continued to hit Blaster hard as the war progressed, first as a reason to not repeat his loss when the scientist [[Spanner (G1)|Spanner]] went missing. {{storylink|The Bridge to Nowhere!}} Blaster angrily brought up Scrounge's death later on [[Earth]], after [[G.B. Blackrock]] questioned Blaster's credentials as an Autobot warrior. {{storylink|Crater Critters}}
[[Image:Scroungeidw.jpg|left|100px|thumb|His special trash! There is no other like it!]]
Before the war began, Scrounge could be found scrounging for trash in the deepest, darkest slums of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. He still has a special arm. How many others are like it is unknown at this point. {{storylink|Megatron Origin issue 2}}

During the war, Scrounge fell in with the Autobots, but was on the list of warriors to be utilized as only as a last resort, presumably because, like [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]], he's low on useful skills (besides his special arm, of course. There is, after all, no other like it). {{storylink|Spotlight: Wheelie}}

When [[Bulletbike (TransTech)|Bulletbike]], CEO of [[RoboCo]], found his [[spark]] trapped inside a "[[lowtech]]" body that was not his own, a poor deluded lowtech named Scrounge was the only other Transformer who offered sympathy. Just like Bulletbike, Scrounge claimed to be someone he was not, by all outward appearances, but unlike Bulletbike, Scrounge was indeed mistaken. Insane though he may have been, he was lucid enough to be of legitimate help, plus he was harmless enough.

Scrounge agreed to help Bulletbike find [[EconTerm]], though at increasing peril. Bulletbike was finding a growing appetite for violence, a troublesome tick that Scrounge was able to narrowly avoid. Ultimately, Scrounge was instrumental in providing support for Bulletbike's crusade to locate the beings who had transplanted his spark into another body, even if it resulted in Bulletbike's death.

In the aftermath, Scrounge was given excellent treatment by [[Cheetor (TransTech)|Commander Cheetor]]. The poor thing just needed some proper care. {{storylink|I, Lowtech}}
==Trivia==
[[Image:Scroungespecialhand.jpg|right|125px|thumb|Autobots with silly abilities like turning invisible or making holograms only wish they could do this.]]
* Scrounge's death haunted Blaster for a long time. He's kind of like Blaster's [[Wikipedia:Gwen Stacy|Gwen Stacy]], only with a special arm instead of go-go boots.

* Scrounge has a special arm (how many times can we mention that?) with two [[Sensors|sensored]] fingers that pick up sound and video. He claims there is no other like it. However, in the ''Classics'' story "[[Games of Deception]]", [[Elita One]] had a similar setup. Should have registered that patent, Scrounge.

* The Scrounge in "[[I, Lowtech]]" who thinks he's actually Emirate Xaaron isn't very good at being Xaaron. He claims he has a [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]] and that he's from universe Primax 093.0 Epsilon. [[Universal stream|Decoding that technobabble]] allegedly pegs him as an Emirate Xaaron from Transformers Fan Club fiction published in 1993. Yyyyyeah.

* The [[Jetfire (ROTF)|Jetfire]] of an entirely different continuity, makes reference that his father was a wheel. Hmmmmm.......
'''The Autobots return to Earth to save it from the Decepticons.'''

== Synopsis ==
In a ruined parking garage, Cmdr. Spike Witwicky hoists the duffel bag containing the super-weapon onto his back. He tells Bridge, Sarah and Charles that they don't need to risk their lives by helping him, but Sarah protests. As dirt and debris fall from the ceiling, Bridge insists that the European Union's impending nuclear strike will mean their deaths anyway, so they might as well try to help the fight while they can. Spike relents and leads his three companions in a dash outside, where they see Devastator fighting off a swarm of European jets.

Meanwhile, Megatron and Starscream stand side-by-side, firing up at the planes. Starscream says that the attack's timing seems suspiciously convenient, and Megatron replies that it's the remaining human forces' last-ditch attempt at victory. Starscream is shocked that Megatron had known this, and Megatron explains that it had all been planned meticulously from the beginning: When the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] started, Megatron needed an army so ruthless it could conquer a planet. But when the [[Autobot]]s rose up to stop them, he needed more than just ruthlessness; his army had to become a "vile machine" for whom no cost was too great in the service of victory over their enemies. Once the Autobots were defeated, Megatron planned to "kill" what he had created. He would remake the [[Decepticon]]s into what he had first meant them to be, at which point their reign would truly begin: no infighting or dissent, but rather a "perfectly controlled peace through unparalleled strength."

Just as Megatron declares that "nothing comes as a surprise" to him, he is shocked to find himself harried by blaster-fire from above. Optimus Prime and his Autobots fall from Omega Supreme's rocket mode and face off against the Decepticons, first with their guns and then with their fists. Starscream chides Megatron on having not anticipated this, but Megatron simply reassesses the situation, deciding that the Autobots are scattered and desperate enough that the Decepticons still have a chance to win if they can quickly regroup. But before he reenters the battle, Megatron tells Starscream one last thing: He predicts that someday Starscream ''will'' overthrow him and take command of the Decepticons, and in fact this is the ''only'' rightful way for power to change hands. But that day is not today; today Megatron holds the power, and if Starscream helps him create "a new age" now, then later Starscream will rule. After a moment of consideration, Starscream radios battle orders to the Decepticons, ending with the fist-raised cry of "all hail Megatron!"

As Starscream joins the battle in command of the aerial forces, Ironhide worries that Devastator and the others will be on the Autobots in seconds. To the Autobots' relief, Prime responds with a plan: Blaster is to block the Decepticons' communications as the Autobots fall back, misleading the Decepticons into thinking it's a retreat. This allows room for Omega Supreme to plow through the Decepticon column in robot mode and slam Devastator into a building. Optimus, fearing further damage to the city, orders Omega to take their fight elsewhere. Omega obeys, grabs Devastator in a bearhug, and flies into the air.

In Central Park, Gen. "Sparkplug" Witwicky expresses confusion at the sight of ''two'' building-sized robots soaring above the skyline. Col. Hawke thinks that the new one is on the humans' side, based on EU reports that a rocket ship had dropped off a bunch of robots who started fighting the original invaders. Witwicky says that it doesn't make any sense, and he orders the evacuation to continue. When Hawke protests, Witwicky explains that nothing has truly changed: They have no control over the EU plane carrying the nuclear bomb, so they still need to move everyone to a safe distance away. Moreover, there's no way for them to know if the new robots are friendly or hostile to the humans anyhow.

Back in the city, Roadbuster slams into Astrotrain, who hits a wall and falls to the ground. As Roadbuster stands over his foe, Megatron blasts the Autobot through the chest from behind. Optimus Prime then calls Megatron out, and the two begin circling each other. Megatron accepts that Prime somehow survived the [[space bridge]] ordeal, but he doesn't understand why he came back to [[Earth]]. When Prime speaks of the planet being under Autobot protection, Megatron insists that Prime cares nothing for it, that all he wants is his [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]] back. After all, Prime had already abandoned Earth once, and they both know that war means "acceptable losses." Prime rejects this, declaring that he will stop perpetuating a war that destroys innocent worlds. Megatron mocks him for developing a conscience at the wrong time, since the "innocent" race he's trying to save is about to kill millions of its own members to destroy the Transformers. Prime doesn't believe him, but Megatron explains about the EU bomb, boasting that the Decepticons have the ability to take control of it. Once he has finished Prime, he plans to use the nuke to kill the humans.

[[Image:AHM11-specialgueststar.jpg|left|thumb|200px|[[Shane McCarthy]] is a shoo-in for this year's Best Use of Chronic [[Shelfwarmer]] award.]]

The evac continues, but one soldier has trouble moving his tank. Suddenly, it transforms into a Decepticon and fires on the soldiers. As Sparkplug and Hawke drag a wounded soldier away, they remark on how the robots had been playing with them, hiding in plain sight. Sparkplug begins shouting hysterically, asking where else they might be hiding. Meanwhile, the nuclear bomber soars above the ocean, a Decepticon symbol displaying on a screen in the console of its empty and very [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]ic-looking cockpit.
== Quotes ==
"When the war first began, I needed an army, one ''ruthless'' enough to overthrow a planet. With the rise of the Autobots, my army had to become ''much'' more—a ruthless, vile machine capable of winning at ''any'' cost. The goal was to defeat the Autobots no matter ''what.'' Once the Autobots were defeated, I would kill the very creature I created to wipe out my enemies in the first place. Once the Decepticons were remolded, recreated into what I ''originally'' intended them to be, then and ''only'' then, would our reign begin. No infighting, no dissent, nothing but perfectly controlled peace through unparalleled strength."
:—'''Megatron's''' master plan

"One day, you ''will'' lead the Decepticon armies. You will rule over them as you've ''always'' wanted and will have done so by crushing me beneath your heel. The right to lead is one that cannot be given, it ''must'' be taken. This ''is'' something I see before you."
:—'''Megatron''' gives Starscream way too much credit.

"None of this makes any sense!"
:—'''General Witwicky''' pretty much sums up ''All Hail Megatron'' for us.

"Freedom is the right of all—"<br>
"Oh, ''shut up''."
:—'''Optimus Prime's''' catchphrase fails to catch on with '''Megatron'''.

== Errors ==
* When Dropshot reveals himself and starts destroying stuff, Hawke mistakenly gets a word bubble clearly meant for Gen. Witwicky. ("Where else...")

== Items of note ==
* The missile tank revealed to be Dropshot was first seen in [[All Hail Megatron issue 5|''All Hail Megatron'' issue 5]]. For a guy who loves to fight all the time, he was surprisingly patient while his comrades were tearing up the globe.

* The juxtaposed dialogue implies that the bomber is actually a Decepticon (confirmed as [[Octane]] by McCarthy),<ref>[http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?p=136813#136813 Post by McCarthy on the IDW Forums]</ref> but how he managed to come to be carrying the bomb without a crew is unclear. Presumably he could've reconfigured his alt-mode to be whatever vehicle the EU had chosen, but he's still lucky they decided to only use ''one'' bomb.

* It is also unclear why Megatron would need to use the EU's nuke at all, since ''[[Stormbringer (comics)|Stormbringer]]'' revealed that the Decepticons already have enough nukes and other WMDs to shatter whole planets. Perhaps this Megatron is as much a lover of irony as [[The Transformers (cartoon)|other incarnations]].

* This is not [[Rhythms of Darkness!|the first continuity]] [[Prime Directive|to feature a nuclear strike]] [[Transformers Comic issue 10|on a Decepticon-occupied]] major [[United States of America|American]] city.

* Apparently, the EU uses ''propeller-driven nuclear bombers''. Out here in the real world, prop-powered bombers disappeared in the 1950s (though [[Russia]], not an EU member, continues to use the turboprop-driven TU-95 bomber). But hey, if Astrotrain could find a steam locomotive to emulate, maybe it all makes some kind of bizarro sense.

* When Megatron talks about Prime having abandoned Earth in the past, this refers to Prime's decision to divert his Earth-based troops to investigate the [[Garrus-9]] incident at the end of ''[[Devastation (IDW)|Devastation]]''. Indeed, Prime had appeared remarkably detached about the planet's fate until now. Where in other continuities Prime tends to [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|immediately]] [[Optimus Prime (RID)|bond]] [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|with humanity]] [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|and put their welfare]] [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|above all]], this incarnation of Optimus has needed to grow into that mindset.

* Megatron's view of the Decepticons' early days seems a little rosy. He blames the Autobot resistance for forcing him to turn the Decepticons into a "vile machine" with no regard for the costs of victory, but considering that they started as a band of [[Megatron Origin issue 3|murderous pit fighters and criminals]], it doesn't seem like they had far to fall.

* Megatron's view of the Decepticons' future is a little blurry. The context of Megatron's speech to Starscream seems to indicate that he thinks openly fighting the humans will bring about the redemption of the Decepticon army, eliminating internal conflict and ushering in a tightly-controlled peace. How this is meant to happen is uncertain.

* The theme of Autobots and Decepticons both having been twisted into something wrong and needing to change had been previously raised in [[All Hail Megatron issue 9|''All Hail Megatron'' issue 9]] and "[[Spotlight: Drift]]". This seems to indicate both sides are going to stop following the infiltration/phases model and change to something <strike>closer to the 1980s</strike> more ideologically-driven.

* At last, Prime and Megatron throw down while engaged in deep philosophical banter! It's [[Power Play!|the battle]] you've been [[More than Meets the Eye, Part 2|waiting for]] for <strike>[[Prime Directive issue 3|twenty-five]]</strike> <strike>[[Escalation issue 5|seven]]</strike> two years!
Not only is his entire backstory different, but his motives also seem different and the film also makes mention that The Fallen was a member of 8 original leaders (if I remember correctly), as opposed to 13.
Not to mention his radically different appearance (the other 'multiversal singularities' at least all looked alike) and abilities.
'''Shockwave''' is a covert agent in service to [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]]. This size-changing master of disguise has infiltrated the Autobot security apparatus at the highest level: his cover persona is '''Longarm Prime''', head of [[Cybertron Intelligence]], reporting directly to [[Ultra Magnus (Animated)|Ultra Magnus]] himself. The undercover Decepticon is the perfect agent to pull this off, as he's able to change his voice, his appearance, and even his energy signature. This puts Shockwave in the perfect position to undermine and mislead the Autobots while feeding strategic information to his true master. To establish his credibility, "Longarm" attended the [[Autobot boot camp]] alongside Bumblebee and Bulkhead. Over the years, he worked his way up the Autobot hierarchy—first through [[Autobot Academy]], then through the ranks of the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]] until finally he was promoted to be the very head of the Intelligence Division itself!

Befitting a double agent, Shockwave is highly secretive and fearful of detection. Befitting a cartoon villain, he can confidently give those secrets away if he thinks he's winning. If he suspects his cover may be compromised, he's given to acts of desperation.
[[Image:TFA Shockwave DoubleAgent.jpg|thumb|right|150px|So does that mean he's Shockwave Prime?]]

Shockwave was recruited by Megatron because his mass-shifting abilities allowed him to impersonate effectively a wide variety of shapes and sizes, making it difficult for Autobots to accurately track him during missions of infiltration and sabotage. It was these traits which led to Megatron sending him to enlist in the Autobot armed services as a means of climbing the ranks and eventually taking the organization down from within.

Disguising himself as "Longarm", Shockwave enrolled in [[Autobot boot camp]], but slipped up in the early days of training and was overheard reporting to Megatron by the black sheep recruit [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]]. Although Shockwave managed to avoid detection right away, Bumblebee was tipped off to the presence of a traitor in the camp and suspected fellow recruit [[Wasp]], whom he spotted leaving the building shortly afterward. Seeing his fellow recruit [[Wasp]] (probably Shockwave) leaving the building shortly afterwards, Bumblebee was aware there was a traitor in their midst, and suspected Wasp. Bumblebee turned to the espionage-savvy Longarm for advice, and Shockwave used the opportunity to divert attention away from himself by suggesting that the young Autobot refrain from telling their commander, [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|Sentinel Minor]], so that 'Bee could take all the credit when he exposed the traitor himself as a means to ensuring his career in the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]]. Unfortunately, all of Bumblebee's efforts only got him in worse trouble, and his fellow recruits began to bully him, with Longarm being the only one to stick up for him. After several failures on Bumblebee's part, Shockwave took matters into his own hands during a training exercise and switched the training equipment to live ammo in an attempt to offline the Autobot and keep the whole matter of a traitor a secret. Luckily for Bumblebee, this plan was foiled by [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]].

Eventually, Shockwave found out that Sentinel Minor intended to conduct a surprise inspection, and he contrived to set up Wasp to take the fall himself. After planting a Decepticon communicator in Wasp's locker, Shockwave, as Longarm, informed Bumblebee of the upcoming inspection, telling him that it was his last chance to find the evidence he needed. Using one of his extensible limbs to trip up Wasp, Shockwave allowed Bumblebee to palm Wasp's locker key as 'Bee helped him up, allowing him to find the communicator and show it to Sentinel. In the end, Wasp was dragged off to prison, and Longarm commended Bumblebee for his deductive work.

Subsequently, Shockwave graduated boot camp and became a member of the Cybertron Elite Guard. Now "Longarm [[Prime (rank)#Transformers Animated|'''Prime''']]", he became head of [[Cybertron Intelligence]] and remained in this position, hiding in plain sight, for the fifty stellar cycles that Megatron was lost on [[Earth]]. {{storylink|Autoboot Camp}} He may have murdered [[Highbrow (Animated)|Intel director Highbrow]] to get the job. <ref>''[[Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club (magazine)|Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club]]''</ref>

''After [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]]'s ship was lost, Longarm pressed Sentinel to continue the search for the ship's crew, the AllSpark and [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]]. His pleas fell on deaf ears. {{storylink|The Arrival issue 1}}''

After Megatron succeeded in restoring himself and the Decepticons were assembled on Earth, he re-established contact with Shockwave on Cybertron and initiated a plan to construct a [[space bridge]] that would allow the Decepticons to conquer the planet from within. {{storylink|Mission Accomplished}} Wasp, now criminally insane, escaped from prison, and Megatron started receiving transmissions from his double agent on Cybertron. When Megatron's captive, [[Isaac Sumdac]], attempted to alert the Autobots to the existence of the double agent by bouncing a transmission to their base, Bumblebee again suspected Wasp. He reported the news to Longarm Prime on Cybertron, but of course, that accomplished nothing. {{storylink|Autoboot Camp}}

[[Image:Anim shockwave pinchy.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Pinchy pinchy!]]

When the completed space bridge failed to function, Megatron contacted Shockwave and instructed him to locate the top space bridge specialist on Cybertron to help correct the problem. Shockwave was surprised to discover that the specialist was already on Earth; it was Bulkhead! Bulkhead was subsequently captured by Megatron and forced to perfect the space bridge. {{storylink|A Bridge Too Close, Part I}} The other Autobots arrived too late to stop him, and they were defeated by the Decepticons and strung up to watch as the bridge was activated. Shockwave revealed his alter ego of Longarm Prime to the Autobots, disclosing that he had already given Megatron an appropriate access code and forcing Bumblebee to feel the shame of sending an innocent Wasp to prison. When Megatron tried to test the space bridge by sending Optimus Prime through it, Shockwave assured his master that he awaited the "test subject" on the other side. Unfortunately, an attempt by Megatron to boost power caused the space bridge to overload, deleting the access code and setting the space bridge to random coordinates. {{storylink|A Bridge Too Close, Part II}}

Megacycles later, Shockwave, as Longarm once more, assured Ultra Magnus that the Decepticons would not be able to reach the Cybertron Space Bridge nexus. Shockwave then contacted [[Team Chaar]], who had successfully taken over a space bridge and were ready to use it in order to gate to Cybertron. [[Strika (Animated)|Strika]] asked for permission to begin the assault, only to have Shockwave deny her request. She was to stay put with her team and wait for Megatron to arrive, even if he was megacycles overdue.

[[Image:TransWarpedBlurrLongarm.jpg|left|thumb|250px|"Whoops—there's a bug on your head, Blurr. Holllld stilll..."]]

Not long afterward, the entire Space Bridge Nexus powered down. Confused, Longarm questioned Cybertron Command, and [[Cliffjumper (Animated)|Cliffjumper]] informed him that Ultra Magnus had ordered the shutdown in order to prevent the Decepticons from accessing Cybertron. Just then, Agent [[Blurr (Animated)|Blurr]] arrived and (very) quickly informed Longarm that while on Earth, he had intercepted a transmission between Megatron and and his double agent on Cybertron, Shockwave. Further, Blurr noted that Shockwave's voice didn't match that of the suspected Wasp, but quick search of the Cybertron Intel Database would allow them to find the true identity of the traitor. Shocked, Longarm asked if Blurr had shared this information with anyone else. When Blurr replied that he had not, Shockwave decided it would be wise to quiet him down—permanently. Blurr eluded his initial attempts and escaped into the corridors around the nexus control center. Rather than give chase, Shockwave simply had the corridors' security hatches slam shut and close in on Blurr, trapping and crushing him to death.

At the Elite Guard Headquarters, Longarm handed over a small cube of "sensitive materials" to Cliffjumper to dispose, then went to his office, where he received an incoming transmission from Lord Megatron himself. They traded information on their respective setbacks, but Megatron assured Shockwave that he had [[Omega Supreme (Animated)|a method]] of preventing the Earth Autobots from blowing Shockwave's cover.

Shortly, Longarm Prime attended an Elite Guard meeting, where Ultra Magnus declared that the Decepticons' attacks were too organized to be random acts of sabotage. Rather, evidence pointed to a double agent in the Autobots' midst. Longarm nervously pointed out that the Decepticon uprisings had started after Wasp's escape, making the cause plain. Ultra Magnus agreed and ordered [[Jazz (Animated)|Jazz]] and Sentinel Prime to organize an Elite Guard Unit to find the escapee. He then requested that the Earth-bound Autobots be contacted. Increasingly distraught, Longarm declared that all communications should be first filtered through him, without exceptions—for the sake of security and the protection of Cybertron, naturally. {{storylink|TransWarped}}

Unfortunately, Longarm's insistence on diverting blame toward Wasp was his undoing. When Wasp headed to Earth, Ultra Magnus didn't inform him about Wasp's destination until the Elite Guard's ship was in sight of the planet. Knowing he was on the verge of being exposed, Shockwave tried to contact Megatron, but still received no response. With no other orders on how to proceed, Shockwave took matters into his own hands: In an effort to inflict one last blow to the Autobots, Shockwave attacked and seriously damaged Ultra Magnus, stealing his Magnus hammer in the process. {{storylink|Where Is Thy Sting?}}

When the Autobots became trapped in [[Soundwave (Animated)|Soundwave's]] virtual reality, Shockwave appeared to invade and attack Earth. However, he didn't seem to do much besides set an apartment on fire. {{storylink|Human Error, Part I}}

[[Image:TFAni ThisisWhyIHateMachines Shockwave TrueColors.jpg|thumb|240px|right|Wish you'd bought that repaint now, don't you?]]
After escaping, Shockwave hid in an underground tunnel, concealed from detection, waiting for Megatron to call. The Decepticon leader, trapped inside of [[Omega Supreme (Animated)|Omega Supreme]] along with [[Starscream (Animated)|Starscream]] and [[Lugnut]], contacted Shockwave, who revealed a way to gain the access codes for Omega Supreme. However, Shockwave was soon discovered by [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]] and [[Captain Fanzone]]. He easily defeated them and went to find the female intelligence agent [[Arcee (Animated)|Arcee]]. To do this, he "asked" an informant-bot named [[Rattletrap]] for the directions. However, he apparently got lost, and so merely hid and waited for Fanzone and Ratchet to find her. He battled Ratchet and severely wounded the elderly Autobot. During the battle, he then found Ultra Magnus, still wounded. He was about to kill him for good when Ratchet used his EMP generator on both Shockwave ''and'' Ultra Magnus's hammer. Ratchet was then distracted by the arrival of temporary Magnus Sentinel Prime. After getting back online, Shockwave took Arcee and escaped to Omega Supreme, using the access codes to transwarp to Earth's orbit. He then celebrated his freedom to serve Megatron openly by [[electronic paint job|changing]] into more...[[Shockwave (G1)|suitable colors]], while [[Lugnut]] silently fumed at Megatron's description of him as his "most loyal servant". {{storylink|This Is Why I Hate Machines}}

[[Image:TFA-Endgame-ShockwavePointsAndLaughs.jpg|thumb|left|240px|It is only logical that you're an idiot.]]
Shockwave worked on the captured Arcee, initially hitting an early datatrax from her time as a teacher before the Great War. Megatron assured his "ever-loyal Shockwave" that if any bot could access the right datatrax, it was him. Combined with some taunting by Starscream, this sent Lugnut into a frenzy of jealousy, and he knocked Shockwave across the room as he begged for Megatron's favour. Shockwave in turn pointed out that while Lugnut was "fawning at Megatron's feet", he'd risked "spark and servo" as a double agent. This didn't go over well, and soon the two purple 'Cons were fighting one another. Later, with both sent to convert material from the wrecked [[Nemesis (Animated)|Decepticon flagship]] into [[Lugnut Supreme|clones of Omega Supreme]], Shockwave could be seen pointing and laughing at a misfortune on his rival's part.

After dropping a bit of stripped material from the wrecked ship, unwittingly nearly crushing a spying Bumblebee, Shockwave returned to working on Arcee and successfully restored her to the [[The Thrill of the Hunt|point at which her memory was wiped]]. Briefly returning to his grey "Longarm" mode, he confirmed that she had the activation codes, so he ripped the wires which artificially sustained her from her head, knocking her back into stasis. Outside, with the clones ready for activation, he rebooted Arcee. Despite "Longarm's" prompting, she refused to give the activation codes to Megatron voluntarily. Instead, Shockwave knocked her back into stasis and extracted the codes manually, making no comment when they ended up in Lugnut and Megatron proclaimed Lugnut his "most loyal lieutenant". As it turned out, however, the codes which Shockwave had torn from Arcee were missing a crucial "security upgrade patch", and he was forced to rig up an inelegant bypass—involving Lugnut directly puppeteering the clones—until he could retrieve the rest of the code from Arcee. {{storylink|Endgame, Part I}}

As Shockwave attempted to find the patch in Arcee's processor, Megatron grew impatient with Lugnut's giving a long speech on the greatness of his Glorious Leader before he would actually do anything with the clones, and angrily enquired of Shockwave if he was done yet. Shockwave replied, with great amusement in his voice, that he was still working on it and Megatron would have to relay all orders through Lugnut for the time being.

Apparently, he gave up on extracting the patch, and instead left Arcee - her datatrax once again reverted to her teaching days - on the lunar surface as a trap, while he waited to ambush any Autobots who came for her and Omega Supreme. The group which transwarped there, led by Ratchet, blundered straight into the trap, and Ratchet was forced to flee with Arcee and [[Sari Sumdac]] while Bumblebee and Bulkhead confronted their old classmate. While Shockwave initially had little difficulty as they attempted to attack from distance, he couldn't deal with Bulkhead's strength Bot-to-Con, and was left sprawled on the lunar surface, his cannon knocked out of reach. In a desperate attempt to buy time, he switched to Longarm mode - forgetting to activate his [[electronic paint job]] - but the pair of Autobots were not impressed, and Bulkhead smashed the cannon.

[[Image:TFA-Endgame-PanAcrossEveryone.jpg|thumb|240px|Decepticons have failed forevermore.]]
He was next seen as the Autobots' prisoner, being paraded before a large crowd on Cybertron. {{storylink|Endgame, Part II}}
* '''Shockwave''' (Voyager, 2008)

:Representing his double nature in the cartoon, ''Animated'' Shockwave becomes both the Autobot Longarm and Decepticon Shockwave, featuring four distinct modes. In "Infiltration Mode," the shorter, stockier Autobot Longarm transforms into a four-legged crane platform. If one fancies, one can stretch out his Shockwave-mode elbows to emulate his limb-stretching ability in Longarm mode (abeit not very well). In "Spy Mode," he stretches and converts into the taller, lankier Decepticon Shockwave, as the crane portion of Longarm's body converts into a hand-held cannon. The center panel on his chest flips between Autobot and Decepticon symbols. Both chest symbols are vacuum metalized, with very shiny silver and gold. Curiously, while the rotating faction symbols on his chest use the usual "classic" designs, the tampographed Decepticon symbol on his cannon/crane is in the movie style, and is visible in his Autobot modes.

:All the differences between Shockwave and Longarm can be difficult to remember. In the "tank mode" picture at right, the secondary guns are incorrectly folded back. On the back of this toy's box, there are several small transformation errors, the most obvious being that only ''one'' of Shockwave's shoulders has been correctly rotated up. Also, the toy [[instruction booklet|instructions]] do not show Shockwave's neck as correctly extended (his chin is touching his chestplate in the instructions, just as for Longarm). They also fail to mention that you can push his upper torso forward as Shockwave to better replicate the slouch that he has in the cartoon.
* '''Shockwave VS Bumblebee''' (Multi-pack, 2009)

:A predominantly purple [[redeco]] of the Voyager toy, this version of Shockwave is packaged with an apparently unaltered [[Activators]]-class [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]] figure. Shockwave retains his four modes and gimmickry within each. A Target stores [[exclusive]], this set was available simultaneously with the [[Sunstorm (Animated)|Sunstorm]]/[[Ratchet (Animated)#Activators|Ratchet]] multi-pack. Although this version seems to be a less convincing Autobot due to its purple paintjob, in one respect he would be a better spy in this form, as the repaint doesn't have the Decepticon symbol on the cannon arm to give him away.
: The official Hasbro picture at right contains several transformation errors: In robot mode, Shockwave's shoulders are not rotated up. In tank mode, the secondary guns are not deployed, the red panels which are on the robot mode's shoulders have not been flipped to show the tank's treads, and the middle panel on the side of the tank is oriented wrong (the circle should be down, not back). In addition, his head is not fully retracted. Someone at Hasbro is dozing.
==Notes==
* Actor Corey Burton reprises the role of Shockwave from Generation 1, reusing precisely the same British-accented, [[Wikipedia:Sark (Tron)|David-Warner-inspired]] voice for the character (while employing an American accented variation for Longarm). In a [http://www.seibertron.com/energonpub/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=41857&p=742393#p742393 recent interview], Burton revealed that Shockwave's inclusion in Season 2 arose from a between-scenes conversation he had with the production team, regarding how little the original Shockwave actually had to do.

[[Image:Shockwave_goodside.jpg|thumb|right|180px|I hear this is my good side...]]

* While Shockwave possesses the single, round optic and window-chest of his Generation 1 counterpart, much of the rest of his body appears to be largely patterned after ''[[Armada (franchise)|Armada]]'' [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]]; he transforms into an "H-tank", the front treads end up on his shoulders, plus he has the large, spiky "antlers" on his head. Additionally, Shockwave's vehicle mode appears to be loosely based on one of the [[Transtech]] sketch designs for Megatron, with the high angled treads and turret.

* Shockwave's on-package bio states that, as Longarm, he rose through the ranks of the [[Cybertron Elite Guard]] to reach his current position; this meshes with Longarm's cover story in "Autoboot Camp" that he wishes to become an Elite Guard intelligence officer. [[Derrick J. Wyatt]] has informed this wiki that Longarm is not a member of that group in the cartoon. Shockwave's status as a nonmember of the Elite Guard is supported by Longarm's lack of the Elite Guard's winged Autobot symbol in the cartoon. However, he is drawn with an Elite Guard symbol in [[The Arrival issue 1|''The Arrival'' #1]].

* Despite not having a face, Shockwave still manages to have a [[chin]].

*Both "Shockwave and "Longarm" have official alternate capitalizations. The credits of "[[TransWarped]]" give "LongArm Prime", and the credits for "[[This Is Why I Hate Machines]]" have "ShockWave".

*In just a few appearances on ''Animated'', Shockwave has managed to destroy Wasp's life, kill a popular recurring character, bring down Cybertron's entire interplanetary transport and communications system, brutally assault the Magnus (and steal his hammer!), and give Megatron control of the Autobots' most feared and powerful weapon. Which is really more than he has ever done [[Shockwave (G1)|before]].<br /><br />Shockwave is ''awesome''.
