The mercenary Insecticons landed on earth in their own space pod before the Ark crashed to [[Earth]]. ''(It is unclear whether this pod was launched from the [[Nemesis (G1)|Nemesis]] or not, as the dialogue seems to suggest maybe it was, but the Insecticons and [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s Decepticons do not seem to know each other.)'' Their pod crashed into the region that would become known as "[[Demon Swamp]]" and their [[idento-computer]]s adapted them to transform into insects and eat organic food to survive. Though they were largely communal, Shrapnel was a leader among then, usually alternating with [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]] ([[Kickback (G1)|Kickback]] was out of luck). The "Insecticons" apparently lived in the swamp for millions of years until discovered by Megatron's Decepticons. They form an uneasy alliance with Megatron, never coming fully under his command but working with the Decepticons when they could be convinced there was something (usually food) in it for them. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}}

The Insecticons were able to create vast clone armies of themselves at will, a formidable ability that may have been the reason they were able to maintain their autonomy from Megatron. They would use this ability once to create the [[Insecticon Army]] which early devastated the planet Earth but they were destroyed by the [[Morphobots]]. {{storylink|Quest for Survival}} Even before this, they were shown to be very duplicitous and often betrayed Megatron or disobeyed him.

During the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]]' attempt at destroying Earth by sending it into the sun, the Insecticons were seen in large numbers, numbers, again and Shrapnel was responsible for taking apart the [[Space Bridge]] controls. He would later be tracked, tracked, by the combined Autobots and Decepticons after which he relinquished the controls. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}}

Shrapnel, along with his Insecticon colleagues, [[Battle of Autobot City|attacked]] [[Autobot City]] on Earth, where he was badly damaged and dumped into space from [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]]. His floating body would be reformatted by [[Unicron]] into one of [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]'s minions. Shrapnel was part of an assassination unit alongside Kickback, Bombshell, [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] shortly after the rise of Optimus Prime. He and his partners were assigned to eliminate the new Prime, steal the [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]], and bring it to Megatron so that he could turn Cybertron into a cosmic dreadnought and conquer the universe. Spoiler alert—it didn't work. {{storylink|The War Within}} During the Dark Ages after Megatron's disappearance, Shrapnel served with the main Decepticon faction under [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]'s command. Shrapnel was part of a unit sent to Earth by Shockwave to guide the planet's development and prepare it for invasion. The change is especially ironic, given that only male stag beetles have the large pincers of Shrapnel's alt-mode.
* [[Waspinator (BW)|Waspinator]] once went crazy (more so) and for a brief time, believed he was Shrapnel even speaking with his own speech pattern, pattern. This makes sense since both have insect alt-modes, both have the slag kicked out of them several times and while Waspinator, being a male wasp, should not have a stinger, Shrapnel, once being a female stag beetle, should not have had pincers. This also means Waspinator has had experiences with both characters who switched gender in the french dub of the movie, having once taken over by Starscream's ghost.

On Phobos (a moon on Mars) [[Skids (ROTF)|Skids]] and [[Mudflap (ROTF)|Mudflap]] are posing in front of their new friends. [[Soundwave (ROTF)|Soundwave]] gives the decepticons their Mission briefing and tells the twins he needs their full attention. The former autobots explain they are not "Yer average creativity stifled Grunt." which make [[Ravage (ROTF)|Ravage]] growl. Soundwave tells them to just go and warns them not to fail him. The twins leave for [[Earth]]. [[Grindor (ROTF)|Grindor]] and [[Sideways (ROTF)|Sideways]] express their distrust in the two but Soundwave explains to them that Skids and Mudflap are meerly bait for the one they are truly after, the one who has survived countless years on Earth. He tells the decepticons that they will be waiting for him and gives them orders to make sure Skids and Mudflap do '''not''' survive.

On Earth Skids and Mudflap are driving in the countryside near a tractor and Skids asks Mudflap if he thinks the decepticons bought it. Mudflap seems oblivious to the fact that it was an act they suddenly realise that if they don't trust them they'll have sent someone to keep tabs on them. They decide that the plan is to bag a bad guy and present him to the autobots gift-wrapped. The two head to a barn where they wait for the guy they supposed to Tag 'n' bag when suddenly a plane crashes through the side of the barn and attempts to gun the autobots down.

At [[NEST]] regional command in Wyoming they have confirmation of where the autobot's two rogues are and give the coordinates to [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]] and [[Sideswipe (ROTF)|Sideswipe]].

Back in at the farm the twins try to remember who the bot they're shooting at was. [[Ransack (ROTF)|Ransack]] reminds them and tries to blow them up but Skids informs him that they aren't there to fight since they are decepticons now. Ransack suddenly believes them but refuses to give anyone info unless it's [[The Fallen]]. They inform them they're from The Fallen and Ransack tells them to lead on.

Meanwhile Grindor and Sideways are chasing the three and can barely believe that those two clowns would try talking instead of shooting and example they both express hatred for. Grindor shoots down Ransack and attacks the twins then Sideways comes round and also starts to attack. Skids tells Mudflap he'll handle the fly-boy but reminds him they still need something tangible to show the autobots to get them to believe they're still on their side Mudflap forces Sideways to crash into a tree instead of fight while Skids tries to fight of Grindor. In the sky Sideswipe seem confused that Skids and Mudflap are fighting with the two decepticons they are meant to be aiding. Ironhide asks for the NEST soldiors to let them down but they aren't allowed to because their current airfield won't accomidate them. Grindor snatches his ''priority'' and leaves but luckily the two have their scalp but Skids says it isn't enough, he's tired of being the fall guy and says they'll take this whole convoluted conspiracy right back to Soundwave's door and bring his whole house down.

On Phobos (a moon on Mars) [[Skids (ROTF)|Skids]] and [[Mudflap (ROTF)|Mudflap]] are posing in front of their new friends. [[Soundwave (ROTF)|Soundwave]] gives the decepticons their Mission briefing and tells the twins he needs their full attention. The former autobots explain they are not "Yer average creativity stifled Grunt." which make [[Ravage (ROTF)|Ravage]] growl. Soundwave tells them to just go and warns them not to fail him. The twins leave for [[Earth]]. [[Grindor (ROTF)|Grindor]] and [[Sideways (ROTF)|Sideways]] express their distrust in the two but Soundwave explains to them that Skids and Mudflap are meerly bait for the one they are truly after, the one who has survived countless years on Earth. He tells the decepticons that they will be waiting for him and gives them orders to make sure Skids and Mudflap do '''not''' survive.

On Earth Skids and Mudflap are driving in the countryside near a tractor and Skids asks Mudflap if he thinks the decepticons bought it. Mudflap seems oblivious to the fact that it was an act they suddenly realise that if they don't trust them they'll have sent someone to keep tabs on them. They decide that the plan is to bag a bad guy and present him to the autobots gift-wrapped. The two head to a barn where they wait for the guy they supposed to Tag 'n' bag when suddenly a plane crashes through the side of the barn and attempts to gun the autobots down.

At [[NEST]] regional command in Wyoming they have confirmation of where the autobot's two rogues are and give the coordinates to [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]] and [[Sideswipe (ROTF)|Sideswipe]].

Back in at the farm the twins try to remember who the bot they're shooting at was. [[Ransack (ROTF)|Ransack]] reminds them and tries to blow them up but Skids informs him that they aren't there to fight since they are decepticons now. Ransack suddenly believes them but refuses to give anyone info unless it's [[The Fallen]]. They inform them they're from The Fallen and Ransack tells them to lead on.

Meanwhile Grindor and Sideways are chasing the three and can barely believe that those two clowns would try talking instead of shooting and example they both express hatred for. Grindor shoots down Ransack and attacks the twins then Sideways comes round and also starts to attack. Skids tells Mudflap he'll handle the fly-boy but reminds him they still need something tangible to show the autobots to get them to believe they're still on their side Mudflap forces Sideways to crash into a tree instead of fight while Skids tries to fight of Grindor. In the sky Sideswipe seem confused that Skids and Mudflap are fighting with the two decepticons they are meant to be aiding. Ironhide asks for the NEST soldiors to let them down but they aren't allowed to because their current airfield won't accomidate them. Grindor snatches his ''priority'' and leaves but luckily the two have their scalp but Skids says it isn't enough, he's tired of being the fall guy and says they'll take this whole convoluted conspiracy right back to Soundwave's door and bring his whole house down.

The appearance of female Transformers in most continuities would seem to suggest a level of "sexual" dimorphism is present in at least the more humanoid members of the Transformers species (the term sexual is used in a gender-based, rather than physical sense, see the reproduction link above for that whole kettle of robo-fish). In almost all cases female Transformers are portrayed as comparatively more graceful of form, and more rounded and curved in general, than their male counterparts. Often they have a more than passing resemblance to an attractive human female made of metal and wearing armor and [[kibble]].

There are exceptions to this rule, and bulky, less overtly human-female-like characters have become more common, particularly among those who have toys. These are especially common in the [[Unicron Trilogy]] series and in latter expansions of the [[Generation 1 (franchise)|Generation 1]] series out of Japan, when the characters are often assigned to pre-existing "masculine" toys. Perhaps the best counter-example of this type is [[Strika (BM)|Strika]], who is female yet neither looks nor acts stereotypically feminine at all.

Despite their likely non-sexual means of [[reproduction]], romance between Transformers is a well-established factor in pretty much every continuity. Given that Transformers are a social species, this is perhaps not as odd as might initially seem. A female named [[Beta (G1)|Beta]] existed back in the slave days under [[Quintesson]] rule, and thus it seems clear females were produced alongside the males as part of the Quintessons' product lines.

No females were explicitly shown to exist among the Decepticon ranks, although the introduction of [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]] and implications of an eventual upgrade didn't raise any questions or remarks, suggesting that female Decepticons exist (or that the Decepticons royally don't care about a soldier's gender).

[[The Search for Alpha Trion|27 episodes after Nightbird's appearance]], female Transformers were introduced formally through the [[Female Autobots]]. [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] at various points expresses surprise they aren't extinct, which would seem to imply females were thought to be no longer part of the Cybertronian race. While at the time a decent (though certainly not perfect) explanation for the scarce appearances of female Transformers, it didn't stop more females from showing up in the movie and season 3. Just how relationships function in this isolated, media-based Transformers society is unclear, although it's notable that Wreck-Gar and his lady friend "slept" sitting up next to each other on giant thrones between television broadcast cycles. The lady's character model is actually that of a female [[Lithone (species)|Lithone]], another mechanical race, but whether this is meaningful in any way or simple model recycling is uncertain.

This was finally resolved in "[[Spotlight: Arcee]]", where it was revealed that the malevolent Golden Age Cybertronian scientist [[Jhiaxus (G2)|Jhiaxus]] introduced gender to the Cybertronian genome just to see what it'd do. Tampering with the [[CNA]] of the titular character at her creation to make her Female, he discarded his experiment once he was finished, only to find she had an inherent homing instinct for his creations. Arcee's systems were severely messed up by this experiment, causing her to become tremendously unstable to the point of psychosis and fixated on getting revenge on Jhiaxus.

While the story implies that she is something very rare and unique it does not say that she was the ''only'' female Transformer Jhiaxus created, merely the first, leaving it open for the cameos in ''Megatron Origin'' to remain in continuity.

Jhiaxus specifically alters Arcee's CNA to make her female and introduce gender to the species. Exactly how deep these alterations went, how closely her form was designed to match the females of organic species on which she was based (particularly in relation to reproduction) is unknown and will likely remain so.

Most of the other Transformers, however, seem unconcerned about this.

So far, the Unicron Trilogy is the only ''Transformers'' continuity to explicitly ''give'' female Transformers that level of responsibility.

[[Arcee (Movie)|Arcee]] was originally going to be featured as part of the cast of the [[Transformers (2007)|''Transformers'' film]], but was cut early on in the movie's development. The script writers felt they would need to explain the presence of a female in an entirely robotic race, and there was not enough time in the film to do so. Arcee was replaced in the movie by [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]]. Even so, Arcee was featured in IDW's [[Movie Prequel (2007)|Movie Prequel comics]] and remains in the movie toyline as both Deluxe and Scout-class toys.

One other female Autobot is featured in the movie continuity family, another Scout-class toy, [[Elita-One (Movie)|Elita-One]]. Both Elita and Arcee, however, are featured in [[Transformers (Titan Magazine)|Titan Magazine's]] alternate reality stories as regular characters, with Arcee getting more prominence. Both also appear in IDW's Movie Sequel comic series ''[[The Reign of Starscream]]'', with Arcee playing quite a prominent leadership role. Surprisingly, Elita-One does not fair as well as her sister-in-arms, dying at the claws of [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] himself. Although it is unusual for a female Transformer to die in fiction ([[To sell toys|compared to how often Transformer death happens in general]]), it has [[Manta Ray (BW)|happened]] [[Sonar (BW)|before]].

What this meant for the state of females in the continuity at large was not immediately apparent; in "[[Along Came a Spider]]", both [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]] and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|Bumblebee]] expressed confusion as to ''what'' Blackarachnia was. Though they could have been referring to her [[Technorganic|partially organic]] nature, [[Sari Sumdac|Sari]]'s comment ("Duh, she's a girl.") seems to imply that the two Autobots were confused about Blackarachnia's gender. The fact that no other characters familiar with Blackarachnia ever reacted to her in an unusual way, however, suggests it was more of a misunderstanding on Sari's part used for comedic effect.

As the series proceeded, multiple lady-bots were progressively introduced, among which were a [[Slipstream (Animated)|female clone]] of [[Starscream (Animated)|Starscream]], the obligatory [[Arcee (Animated)|Arcee]] and many more. Despite Optimus's confusion over where organic babies come from in "[[Transform and Roll Out]]", implying that there is no Cybertronian equivalent to [[Reproduction|sexual reproduction]] in ''Animated'', Transformer ''relationships'' are implied to be a possibility, as in "[[Along Came a Spider]]" and "[[Black Friday (episode)|Black Friday]]", respectively, Blackarachnia takes advantage of [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]]'s and the [[Dinobot (Animated)|Dinobots]]' obvious interest in her, especially [[Grimlock (Animated)|Grimlock]]'s.

[[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]]'s role as the Autobot medical officer was originally supposed to be assigned to a character named [[Red Alert (Animated)|Red Alert]], who was originally designed as a female, but then turned male. When brought in at the start of Season 3, Red Alert was female once again as an homage to the original design.

Because Sari was originally a Cybertronian protoform, she could be considered a female technorganic Transformer, although her origins were not revealed until Season 3.

Of the currently known female Transformers in this universe, the malevolently insane [[Arcee (SG)|Arcee]] fights for the evil Autobots and news anchor [[Andromeda (SG)|Andromeda]] reports for them, while the gung-ho and earnest [[Crasher (SG)|Crasher]] fights for the heroic Decepticons as the leader of the [[Mayhem Suppression Squad]].

It's currently unknown how common female Transformers are in this universe, or if they differ from male Transformers in anything other than general shape. Though Crasher does seem bewildered when [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] (who hails from the [[#Generation 1 Marvel Comics continuity|Marvel Comics universe]]) tries to tell her that he thinks her feminine shape is unusual.

Though many female Transformers were featured in the fiction from the early days of ''Generation 1'', for many years they tended to either: a) not have toys made of them at all, or, b) for those very few that did get a release, end up as repaints of other molds clearly not designed with a female aesthetic in mind. In a better life, he might have been [[Cybertron Elite Guard]] commander material.

Right away, Wasp took a dislike to Bumblebee, insulting him out of the blue as the yellow bot mused to himself about his future in the Elite Guard. He also dubbed Bulkhead a "[[Mudflap (slang)|mudflap]]", much to the amusement of his fellow cadets. The loud-mouthed drill sergeant [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|Sentinel Minor]] took an immediate liking to "Wasp", as he dubbed him due to being impressed with his accuracy with his stingers - it was Bumblebee "bumbling" in trying to compete with this that led to his own name being assigned. Wasp and Ironhide quickly became close friends, often competing in little tests of strength, usually involving Wasp hitting or stinging Ironhide while the latter was in armor mode.

After Bumblebee "bumbled" several more times, leading to many [[transform-up]]s for the whole group, Wasp and Ironhide decided to take matters into their own hands, unscrewing Bumblebee's lower legs and leaving them out of reach even before they dumped the rest of him in a locker.

Unbeknown to Wasp, however, the reason for Bumblebee's foul-ups was that he was trying to out a traitor in the group—and had pegged Wasp as the likely culprit after seeing him walk out of a hangar in which someone had contacted [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]]. (Plus, let's face it, he was a complete jerk. And Decepticons are jerks, [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|right?]]) At Longarm's prompting, Bumblebee eventually found evidence incriminating Wasp as a spy. Wasp was stripped of his Autobot insignia and wheeled away, protesting his innocence and swearing revenge on Bumblebee.

Many years later, Wasp escaped from Autobot custody and apparently eluded the now-Sentinel Prime by jumping through a [[space bridge]]. What was left of Wasp hid beneath the bridge as Sentinel left, [[Waspinator (BW)|buzzing and twittering to himself]], still swearing revenge on "Bumblebot". In reality, however, the innocent bot—broken mentally by his years of imprisonment—had been set up with evidence planted by "Longarm", who had also arranged Wasp's "escape" to divert suspicion from himself. {{storylink|Autoboot Camp}}

Wasp headed straight for the Autobots' base on Earth, with Sentinel Prime and [[Jazz (Animated)|Jazz]] in pursuit. Waiting until Bumblebee was left alone on monitor duty (and actually playing ''[[Ninja Gladiator]]'' instead), he struck during a power outage, knocking Bumblebee cold and switching color schemes, helmets and even speech synthesizers with his rival. When Bumblebee came to, the others had returned and had him prisoner, with the disguised Wasp at their side. Despite Bumblebee's muffled cries, the Autobots fell for Wasp's ruse, forcing Bumblebee to flee into the night. Wasp stayed behind as the others tracked Bumblebee down, allowing him to try beating Bumblebee's video game and to search through Bumblebee's personal files.

When the others returned, joined by Sentinel, Jazz, [[Jetfire (Animated)|Jetfire]] and [[Jetstorm (Animated)|Jetstorm]], Wasp was able to recount several of Bumblebee's adventures which were logged in his files to keep the Autobots confused as to which bot was which. Unfortunately for Wasp, [[Bulkhead (Animated)|Bulkhead]] proposed the two battle against each other in in ''Ninja Gladiator'', so that Bumblebee's video game skills would be readily apparent and the traitor revealed. Before their video game could begin, Wasp panicked and attacked Bumblebee, holding him hostage so he could make his escape. The Autobots continued to pursue an erratic Wasp, though for different reasons: Sentinel Prime was still commanding the Elite Guard to bring him in on suspicion of treason, while Optimus and Bumblebee just wanted to help him (or at least keep him from damaging himself and bystanders during his crazed flight). In the midst of a pursuit through the streets of Detroit, Bumblebee tried once again to convince Wasp that he was now known to be innocent and was set up by Longarm, but Wasp refused to listen. During the chase, Wasp was suddenly abducted by [[Swoop (Animated)|Swoop]], who carried him to [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|Dinobot Island]].

Wasp soon found himself in [[Meltdown (Animated)|Meltdown]]'s old underground lab going ga-ga over [[Blackarachnia (Animated)|Blackarachnia]]. The spiderbot used her feminine wiles and familiar-sounding sob stories of Autobot betrayal to win Wasp's trust, and she convinced him to undergo an organic power augmentation procedure by impressing him with the ferocity of her own beast mode (while shielding him from seeing the disfigured mutant corpses left behind from her prior experiments). Wasp entered one [[transwarp]] chamber, a real organic wasp was put into another, and out came... Waspinator, three times larger than before, with more powerful energy "stings" and a deeper, heavily processed, voice.

When he was finally tracked down by Bumblebee, who apologized to him, he decided that while "Wasp" forgave his former accuser, "Waspinator" preferred violent revenge. But before Waspinator could deliver the final blow, he overheard Blackarachnia admitting to the Autobots that she only viewed her new "friend" as another experimental attempt to cure her own organic infection. Irate at yet another betrayal, Waspinator started attacking everybody—and if that wasn't scary enough, his transwarp energy became unstable. Just as Waspinator reached critical mass, Blackarachnia sealed them both within a cocoon of her energy webbing, containing the explosion of transwarp energy.

Despite his endless battle with the march of progress and general poor luck, Fanzone is a good cop, dedicated to protecting the people of his city, even if he dislikes certain demographics. Taking command of the assembled emergency units, Fanzone quickly realized that they were in over their heads fighting a rampaging cybernetic bug-slug, and he ordered all humans to fall back and allow the drones to deal with the creature. When he noticed four cars refusing to fall back, he demanded to know who they were...at which point he realized [[Prowl (Animated)|a cop bike]] had no driver, and [[Captain Fanzone's car|his own car]] was among the group. It got even weirder when it turned out they were [[Transformer|alien robots]], but [[Sari Sumdac|some little girl]] managed to talk the cops down from shooting at the invaders.

Several days later, Fanzone, the Mayor, [[Isaac Sumdac]], and [[Bumblebee (Animated)|that robot that looks like his car]] were taken hostage by [[Starscream (Animated)|an evil jet]], but were saved by the aforementioned little girl and the cop bike. Fanzone was courted by [[Prometheus Black]], who hoped to use the Captain's mistrust of machines in general and Sumdac products in specific to win his company a contract with the Detroit police department. However, once he saw the berserk rage that [[Colossus Rhodes]] displayed when smashing up the parking lot of an arena, he decided he didn't much like Black's biotechnology either. Not long after, he presided over a demonstration of new Sumdac models which proved to still have a few bugs in the system. Sumdac mentioned that these models had much better recognition systems, thus avoiding a repeat of "the unfortunate incident with the Captain's wife". However, sabotage courtesy of the newly minted supervillain Meltdown ensured that the new robots were still far from ready for prime-time. {{storylink|Total Meltdown}}

The officer pointed at the rampaging robots, as [[Snarl (Animated)|a mechanical triceratops]] sent a car flying through the air, which hit Fanzone's car, crushing it. Captain Fanzone remained completely unmoved, then grabbed a bazooka from a nearby officer and fired at the triceratops...which promptly ate the projectile. In questioning the Autobots, he was somewhat dubious as to the merits of teaching a little girl "ninja nerve blows." After noticing suspicious behavior from Prowl and Bulkhead, he resolved to follow the two Autobots and pursued them in a (increasingly leaking) submersible. Luckily, Fanzone arrived on [[Dinobot Island (Animated)|the island]] safely, though his vessel crumbled into pieces. Nature proved almost more hostile to the Captain than technology, ultimately resulting in him getting trapped in quicksand and requiring rescue from the very individuals he was shadowing. Grudgingly going along with them, he uncovered Prometheus Black's plan to genetically alter Sari into a biotechnological shapeshifter. His outrage was brief, however, as the mad scientist dropped him into a gladiatorial arena and sicced [[Fusion creature|his failed experiments]] on the Captain and Prowl. Forced to team up to survive, the Autobot earned the Captain's respect and trust as they fought their way out of the research facility. {{storylink|Survival of the Fittest}}

And then that trust was destroyed along with a good portion of Detroit after [[Megatron (Animated)|Megatron]]'s [[Megatron Rising - Part 2|rampage]]. While the Autobots aboard the alien ship, he refused Sari Sumdac's plea to go to their aid. Once [[Optimus Prime (Animated)|Optimus Prime]] stepped out and told them they were Autobots, Fanzone appeared mildly relieved—until [[Ultra Magnus (Animated)|a missile carrier]] and [[Sentinel Prime (Animated)|a jerk monster truck]] rolled right after Prime, with the later vehicle denting Fanzone's car. Powell]], the new CEO of Sumdac Systems, to arrive and point out that Masterson had committed no real crimes, as robots weren't protected by law, not to mention that the incident occurred on a boat in international waters between the [[United States]] and [[Canada]]. With the prospect of being recalled to Cybertron, the Autobots had the dilemma of who was going to care for Sari after the mean old businessman put her out on the streets. First on their list of grade-A trustworthy humans was Captain Fanzone. Granted, the list was short and also included Prometheus Black and Nino Sexton. In an effort by the Autobots to get the two humans to bond, Sari discussed with Fanzone the merits of being able to stay up as late as she likes, as well as her need for a very large allowance.

Captain Fanzone breathed a sigh of relief when the Autobots got to stay. Sari said they could still hang out. {{storylink|Mission Accomplished}}

The captain was close by when a breakdown in human-robot relations occurred during the Autobots' assistance with a garbage strike. Breaking up the confrontation between a curmudgeonly citizen and the similarly curmudgeonly [[Ratchet (Animated)|Ratchet]], he advised the veteran Autobot that he needed to work on his people skills. When someone like Fanzone says this, you really ought to worry. {{storylink|Garbage In, Garbage Out}}

While pursuing some of the racers of ''[[Street Demon]]'' show, Fanzone managed to arrest two of them who'd been driven off the road by [[Blurr (Animated)|a blue car]] when the Autobots provided assistance to the drivers. Interrogating one (and serving as both [[Prowl (G1)|good cop]] ''and'' [[Barricade (Movie)|bad cop]]), he learned where the next race would be. As he headed downtown, he was surprised when Bumblebee drove up alongside and opened his door, and Sari Sumdac told him to jump into the car—at which point he noticed [[Blitzwing (Animated)|a fighter jet]] shooting missiles at him. Fanzone jumped into Bumblebee, where Sari revealed that [[Master Disaster]] was controlling the blue car with some sort of remote control. After the aforementioned blue car won a mid-air game of chicken with the jet, Bumblebee removed the two humans, then went to fight the Decepticon. As Master Disaster tried to sneak away, Fanzone placed him under arrest. {{storylink|Velocity}}

After Meltdown was abducted from jail, Fanzone was called in to investigate. While at the scene, Fanzone encountered Porter C. Powell, who immediately blamed Sari and the Autobots for Meltdown's escape, and was shown a recorded conversation they had with Meltdown as proof. Suspicious, Fanzone asked him how he obtained that recording, which was met with an evasive response from Powell. After Powell pompously demanded that he provide him with police protection, Fanzone ignored him and walked off. Later that night, Fanzone received a call from Powell, informing him that a robbery had been committed by the Autobots, though the only thing they took was Meltdown's [[genetic modifier]]. Turned out that the robbery and Meltdown's escape were caused by their [[Blackarachnia (Animated)|"Spider-Lady Friend"]] blackmailing the Dinobots and Optimus Prime into helping her and the Autobots returned the genetic modifier back to Powell, albeit melted and damaged beyond repair. An irate Powell demanded that Fanzone arrest the Autobots for endangering his life, but Fanzone, already fed up with Powell at this point, said he was going to get some sleep and walked away, but not before telling Powell to do the same or he'd arrest him for being a public nuisance. {{storylink|Black Friday (episode)|Black Friday}}

After Optimus Prime defeated [[Headmaster (Animated)|Headmaster]], Fanzone showed up mutely to arrest him. {{storylink|TransWarped}}

When the [[Constructicons (Animated)|Constructicons]] (under [[Dirt Boss (Animated)|new management]]) started their oil-racketing gig, Fanzone asked whether Bulkhead knew the [[Mixmaster (Animated)|rude]] [[Scrapper (Animated)|oil guzzlers]] in question. When Bulkhead admited so and claimed that they were simply good bots that fell in with [[Decepticons|the wrong crowd]], Fanzone told Bulkhead to tell his 'good bots' that he does not appreciate illegal horseplay in his town, especially if it's by machines. {{storylink|Three's a Crowd}}

Fanzone was given a [[Sound Wave]] for Christmas, with the note "A machine even you could love". It proceeded to take over his mind. Meanwhile, in a virtual world, Bumblebee stole virtual-Fanzone's car.

When the police heli-drones started malfunctioning, Fanzone went to Sumdac Tower to complain to Issac Sumdac in person. All he found was Ratchet trying to work use Bulkhead's Space Bridge to find [[Omega Supreme (Animated|Omega Supreme]]. Then said heli-drones appeared and started attacking Fanzone. Fortunately, his life was saved when the Space Bridge activated and sucked Fanzone out of harm's way. Problem was, it sent him to [[Cybertron]], a planet inhabited completely by robots. Things did not turn better when [[Flareup (Animated)|one robot]] encouraged [[Grandus (Animated)|her large friend]] to step on him. Fanzone's life was saved when Ratchet, who had also jumped through the Space Bridge, showed up. Unfortunately for Fanzone, all of Cybertron was anti-organic, thanks to their new leader, Sentinal 'Magnus'. He was apprehended by Sentinel and was a witness to the Autobot Council's debate whether or not they should fire on Omega Supreme. When Ratchet's disagreement with Sentinel caused him to be branded as a traitor, Fanzone provided a decent distraction with a loud (and disgusting) sneeze.

Ratchet and Fanzone escaped to the underground tunnels, only to find someone had been living there for a while: a tall one-eyed Decepticon that Ratchet identified as [[Shockwave (Animated)|Shockwave]]. When Shockwave revealed his plans to steal Omega Supreme's access codes, the two bots had a tussel and Shockwave got away. Fortunately, Fanzone knew where to go: to [[Rattletrap|the guy in town who dealed in false documents]]. Ratchet and Fanzone were able to convince him to give them an access card to the Cybertron Central Infirmiry. When those codes turned out bogus, Jazz, who Fanzone knew had been tailing them since the tunnels, gave them a genuine keycard. Then Ratchet showed them what they were fighting over: [[Arcee (Animated)|a comatose robot dame]]. However, they just led Shockwave to her. Fanzone demanded an explanation of why she was so important. Ratchet briefly told him how he and Arcee were captured by [[Lockdown (Animated)|Lockdown]] when Ratchet was transporting her and the activation codes she carried, only for her memory to be wiped by Ratchet's EMP generator. Ratchet then put Fanzone and Arcee into the room, only for Shockwave to break into the room, bury Fanzone in rubble, and fly off with Arcee.

Later, [[Alpha Trion (Animated)|two]] [[Perceptor (Animated)|of]] the Autobot Council provided Ratchet and Fanzone a Space Bridge ride home. The moment was slightly soured by Ratchet refusing to give Sentinel the Magnus Hammer and jumping through the Space Bridge with Fanzone. Back on Earth, Fanzone loudly complained about how he had been "mixed up in a war, nearly stepped on, blasted, buried in rubble, and possibly zapped into space" and was now an accomplice in intergalacitc grand theft. Then Ratchet destroyed destroyed a malfunctioning heli-drone and Fanzone called it even. * According to [[Marty Isenberg]], Captain Fanzone was named after Detroit native [[wikipedia:Carmen_Fanzone|Carmen Fanzone]], a neighbor of his and a former player for the Chicago Cubs. Due to the relative scarcity of Fanzones in Michigan, the real Fanzone had to sign a waiver before the character could be used. The real Carmen Fanzone also doesn't look or sound anything like the ''Animated'' one.

In Soundwave's virtual reality, the Autobots struggle to get themselves free of the giant Soundwave, only for a wire damaged by Sari's recent attack to sever Soundwave's connection to them. As Soundwave makes repairs, Prowl is briefly able to escape the virtual world using [[processor-over-matter]]. However, his attempt to free Optimus Prime is interrupted as Soundwave plugs him back into the VR computer. His control reestablished, Soundwave reverts the Autobots to their human forms. Recognizing that reprogramming will take longer now, Soundwave instructs his [[Sound Wave|toy replicas]] to begin hypnotizing the humans of Detroit.

In the virtual world, Bulkhead has taken to smashing things in the hopes that it will get them out. Ratchet says that the only way they can do that is to find Soundwave's interface, a virtual icon with his representation. Bumblebee quickly notices a potential icon: Soundwave's vehicle mode, which nearly runs them down. Optimus orders the Automen to follow Soundwave in vehicles on which their own [[alternate mode]]s are based, including the virtual [[Captain Fanzone's car]]. Upon looking at the driving equipment, however, Optimus realizes that he may be in a little over his head.

Heading back to Sumdac Tower, Sari seeks out her father's help. She is briefly found by a Sound Wave toy, but knocks it aside. Observing that she is immune to his hypnotics, Soundwave decides that she must be terminated. Finding her father in the lab, Sari is horrified when he tries to attack her, but is able to delay him by burying him under a fallen shelf. Sari quickly takes flight, hoping to find help elsewhere.

In the virtual reality, the Autobots are following Soundwave's avatar, but not very well: Bulkhead and Bumblebee keep ramming into other drivers, Optimus's fire-suppressant equipment is out of control, Ratchet is driving backwards, and Prowl is having trouble avoiding popping wheelies. Cornering Soundwave at a dilapidated drive-in movie, Ratchet is convinced that they have the Decepticon right where they want him—only for a dozen of the Soundwave vehicle modes to appear and surround them. It's a trap! As the Automen try to flee, Soundwave appears on the movie screen and begins broadcasting a reprogramming frequency. Prowl begins another processor-over-matter attempt, but one by one, the Autobots' optics begin to turn red...

On Dinobot Island, Sari looks for the Dinobots, but they find her when Swoop knocks her out of the air. Grimlock shows up and declares her an intruder. Sari says that she wants their help, but Grimlock informs Sari that Dinobots don't help puny humans—they ''destroy'' puny humans! The two Dinobots transform and Grimlock attacks, only for Sari to return fire with a blast from her weapon as well. Grimlock decides against destroying her, but says that they won't help either. Sari then notices that the triceratops is missing and asks where he is, but Grimlock says that they aren't talking to him, as Dinobots aren't pets. Heading to the shore, Sari finds Scrapper, who has been marooned for almost seven weeks, separated from [[Mixmaster (Animated)|Mixmaster]] and [[Dirt Boss (Animated)|Dirt Boss]] after their last misadventure. Scrapper reveals that he's taken the triceratops as a pet and named him Snarl (as the Dinobot didn't take kindly to [[Slag (G1)|Slag]]). Scrapper also points out that even if he wanted to help, they're stuck on the island. Sari asks why he doesn't make himself a boat. Scrapper admits that he never thought of that.

On the way to the mainland, Sari says that the three of them will need to rescue the Autobots immediately, but Scrapper reminds her that he never said he'd help. He plans to take Snarl up north, having heard it's good oil country. Sari angrily tells him that it's time to be a hero, and a voice from underwater answers, jumping onto the raft—it's [[Wreck-Gar (Animated)|Wreck-Gar]]! Reluctantly, Sari takes him. As the [[Substitute Autobot]]s reach the mainland, Sari tells them to [[transform and roll out|roll out]], but they quickly leave without her. Once she catches up to them, Sari and the Substitutes are quickly confronted by Soundwave, when the Autobots appear as well. Sari is relieved at the sight of her friends, as she had little hope for the Substitute Autobots. But her cheer turns to horror as she realizes that the Autobots are under Soundwave's control.

Converting to battle mode, Sari instructs the Substitute Autobots to attack. However, the Substitutes are not up to the Autobots' own skills. Wreck-Gar follows the orders of everyone too literally, Scrapper's snowball attack is just plain ineffective, and Snarl barely does anything. Sari is amazed that mindless zombies are more effective than her own team, until Scrapper comments that it's because they're being controlled by one guy. Sari realizes that he's right, and orders the Substitute Autobots to attack on their own. Sure enough, it works: Soundwave begins having trouble multitasking, and the Substitute Autobots' effectiveness begins to wear them down. One of Prowl's attacks even saves Sari from being blasted by Bumblebee. Soundwave eventually decides to use just Optimus Prime instead, and he is able to take down each Substitute Autobot until only Sari is left. Prime nearly slices her in half before Prowl throws his shuriken at Soundwave, knocking his keytar out of his hands and freeing the Autobots. Sari had suspected that he had been faking, but Prowl admits that it took a great deal of effort to fight off Soundwave's control.

Furious at Prowl's deception, Soundwave orders Laserbeak and Ratbat, the keytar, to attack. Ratbat dispatches Prowl, while Laserbeak goes for Sari. Soundwave himself tackles Prime and knocks Optimus's axe out of his hands, so Prime decides to use Soundwave's other axe—Laserbeak. The two engage in what may be the most epic rock-off of all time as they try to counter each other's harmonics. Ultimately, Optimus Prime uses the instrument-locked Laserbeak to shatter Soundwave and Ratbat, freeing the humans from Soundwave's control. However, Laserbeak grabs Soundwave's remaining functional piece and flies off.

Later, it's a very merry Christmas indeed for the Autobots and the Sumdacs: Not only are they freed of Soundwave's control, but Porter C. Powell is about to be financially ruined by the impending Sound Wave refunds. Scrapper decides to call it quits and head back to Dinobot Island for a long vacation, but Snarl refuses to let the Constructicon ride him. Wreck-Gar, however, chooses to stay and help clean up the mess from the battle, ending the fine career of the Substitute Autobots. Sari also has a better appreciation for what Optimus goes through being in command, while the Autobots understand the rigors of being human. As the Autobots reflect on their newfound understanding, Wreck-Gar begins distributing garbage to all the good little girls and boys.

Which meant if they lingered they would surely be ****ed! 

So Cyclonus retreated as the asteroid blew up, 
And Magnus saved the kids from their monumental screw up! 
As it turned out, Magnus didn't know his own birthday, 
So their entire adventure was pointless, anyway.
