He was adopted by [[Star Saber (Victory)|Star Saber]], who acts as his father. He is very protective of Star Saber and does not enjoy watching him go off into battle. He greatly admires his "father" and treats him with the utmost respect. He works along with the [[Rescue Patrol Team]] in giving innocent bystanders aid against [[Decepticon]] attacks.

Jean's exposure to an Autobot upbringing has made him very intelligent for his age and species (that is, human). While he has no special weapons, he has built for himself a vehicle capable moving on two robotic legs. He named his creation the [[Illumina II]], after [[Illumina]], a girl from his school. When indoors, he uses a hover-board to get around and attract attention. He is also very brave for a boy his age.

His normal outfit includes a hoodie overshirt with suspenders and hightop sneakers with no socks, suggesting the Autobots of 2025 are not particularly fashion-conscious.

To save Jean, his parents put him in a tube and shot him into space moments before their ship exploded. Many years later, when the [[Earth]] came under attack from [[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]], Jean returned to his homeworld alongside his surrogate father. There, they met Deathsaurus and the "Decepticon Boy", [[Solon Kitakaze (Victory)|Solon]]. Star Saber defeated the Decepticons with ease and sent them into retreat. Later, Deathsaurus began a large forest fire and absorbed its energy to increase his own power. As Star Saber fought his nemesis, Jean was taken hostage by the mysterious Solon. Confronting Solon after class, Jean's rival explained to him that he was a highly advanced cyborg and was enrolling in an Earth school so he could gather information on the "inferior humans" and determine their weaknesses. Jean wasn't about to take this lying down, but before they could rumble, [[Leozack]] began attacking the city.

Star Saber soon arrived and took the Decepticon out, then approached Jean and his friends. Suddenly, [[Kakuryū]] burst from the ground and attacked Star Saber. He didn't fare well, almost immediately being thrown over a cliff. As Saber loomed menacingly over the Decepticon, Jean begged him not to destroy him. Star Saber instead helped Kakuryū up and sent him on his way. Jean and his two new buddies soon built a treehouse and formed the "Autobot Boy Team", though their meaningful dialogues typically extended no further than what toy was cooler. Their first meeting was a short one, as Jean was kidnapped by [[Yokuryū]] and whisked away to the ''[[Thunder Arrow]]''. Jean's captor, Deathsaurus, revealed that he had a soft spot for little kids and offered him a place on the "Decepticon Boy Team" he was forming. The Autobot Boy Team soon changed their name to the [[Victories]] and donned sets of silly armor, Jean's being modeled after Star Saber. Jean and Star Saber left to chase [[Liokaiser]] across the galaxy, eventually losing his trail on [[Energy Planet X]]. Frustrated, the two began to bicker like brats, exchanging childish insults. As Star Saber began to wonder if he was treating Jean too much like a soldier and not enough like a son, Liokaiser pounced. About to deliver the deathblow, the Decepticon was momentarily halted as the individual Breastforce members began to argue over who would get to kill the Autobot. Star Saber and Jean took this opportunity to break free and defeat the Decepticon. Suddenly, a hot blonde chick arrived with a new Autobot named [[Victory Leo]]. Victory Leo combined with Star Saber to form [[Star Saber (Victory)|Victory Saber]], who quickly defeated the Decepticons. As Jean began to swoon at the sight of the bodacious blonde, she quickly introduced herself as [[Patty Minakaze]]...''his sister''. Patty explained that after their parents were killed, she'd left to live with Victory Leo on [[Victory (planet)|Planet V]]. Jean began to regret having a sibling, as Patty usurped leadership of the Victories from him and began (sweetly) working her teammates to the bone mopping floors. Jean's janitorial duties were soon interrupted by a crisis on planet [[Guard]], so he, Patty, Victory Leo and Star Saber left to investigate. There they were met by Deathsaurus and King Solon, Solon's new giant mech unit. The two Decepticons merged into [[King Zaras]] and attacked Victory Saber. The pair were evenly matched until Solon was distracted by Patty saying the word "mother", and that momentary pause gave Victory Saber the chance he needed to destroy the King Solon mech. With Solon's help, the Victories performed the "Five Stars of Victory" attack, sending the Decepticons retreating to their [[Planet-Destroying Fortress|Space Stronghold]]. Jean asked Solon if he'd officially join the Victories, but Solon said only under one condition: if Patty would be his big sister, too. Deathsaurus then revealed that the Decepticons had been fighting for their families aboard the Stronghold all along—a noble act. With the battle over, Jean and his ex-rival Solon encouraged their fathers to set aside their differences and shake hands. In one possible timeline, the Chaos-Bringer succeeded in consuming [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] and granted his faithful herald freedom and the rule of [[Earth]]. But Galvatron has found, to his great chagrin, that his servitude would not end there. Unicron reached through time itself and plucked his creation away from his triumphant reward, forcing him to repeat his old mission. Rebellious and scheming, his mind slowly being eaten by madness, this "Galvatron II" is a rogue danger to all.

In the year 2005, Megatron fell in battle against an [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Marvel Comics continuity|Optimus Prime]] and was cast into space by [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]. His mind still functioned, but barely. Wracked by madness, he welcomed oblivion, but that relief was denied him by Unicron. Desiring a flawless servant, Unicron re-created Megatron into the cold and clinical Galvatron. But the remnants of Megatron's insanity remained, eating away at Galvatron's precision. {{storylink|A Savage Circle}}

This did not prevent Unicron from achieving his goal, however. Cybertron was destroyed, and Unicron freed Galvatron to do with Earth as he pleased. By the year 2009, the Decepticons had conquered the Americas, but Galvatron's madness had grown. One benign symptom was a tendency to give impromptu speeches about himself in the third person. And more alarmingly, he once rescued [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] from an Autobot attack and then immediately destroyed him for having needed to be rescued at all. He also continued to "kill" a long-dead Rodimus Prime, whose remains he'd strung up on what was left of the [[Wikipedia:World Trade Center|World Trade Center]]. He knew that the [[human]]s' European Crisis Coalition was planning a nuclear strike, but he was glad for it, believing the Decepticons' force-field could absorb the energy of the attack. [[Wildfly|Some]] [[Icepick (G1)|other]] [[Slog|Decepticons]] were not so confident.

On the eve of the nuclear launch, a small team of Autobots and humans struck at the Decepticon Powerbase (East Coast) in [[New York City|New York]], hoping to send a message to the world that there was still an active resistance movement in North America. The battle took its toll in casualties, but the plan succeeded as [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] unfurled an [[United States of America|American]] flag atop a Decepticon tower, causing the Crisis Coalition to call off the strike with just a few minutes remaining. Galvatron took aim at Spike, but [[Hook, Line, and Sinker]] suddenly materialized and subdued Galvatron, then whisked him away. {{storylink|Rhythms of Darkness!}} They took him back to their own time, the year 1990. There, Unicron was planning an imminent attack on Cybertron, and, as per his ''modus operandi,'' he wanted a herald. However, in an unusual move, he had decided to pluck one from a "possible future". Unicron sent Galvatron to attack Cybertron, and there Galvatron soon began to work against him. He followed [[Emirate Xaaron]] beneath Cybertron's surface, believing the Autobot knew a way to defeat Unicron. {{storylink|Surrender!}} He ambushed Xaaron and explained his situation, then braced for Unicron's torture. When the pain did not come, Galvatron took it as proof that being inside the body of [[Primus]] made him invisible to the Chaos-Bringer. Xaaron told him the legend that all the [[Transformer]]s, united together, could defeat Unicron even without the [[Matrix of Leadership]]. {{storylink|...All This and Civil War 2}} Galvatron decided the only way to achieve that would be to awaken Primus, so he and Xaaron went to the chamber deep within the planet where Primus' head rested. Meanwhile, Unicron, indeed blind to Galvatron's whereabouts, sent Hook, Line, and Sinker to find him and bring him back. The trio tracked him to the chamber, where Xaaron was attempting to contact Primus psychically. Galvatron immediately attacked Unicron's servants, destroying two of them before Hook gained the upper hand (so to speak). But Hook spontaneously combusted as Primus entered Xaaron's body. Galvatron beseeched Primus to gather the Transformers before Unicron arrived, and Primus, seeing that his supplicant was a Decepticon, believed that the time was right for unity. He teleported the Earthbound Transformers to Cybertron, and Galvatron reveled in his own ability to "con" a god. {{storylink|Out of Time!}}

As the Transformers prepared for the impending apocalypse, Galvatron secretly helped fight some [[Unicron cultist]]s who tried to assassinate Optimus Prime. {{storylink|The Void! (US)|The Void!}} But despite his covert assistance, the Transformers still scattered helplessly when Unicron arrived. Realizing that he needed to make a public appearance to set an example, Galvatron powered himself up with energy from Cybertron itself, then attacked Unicron with a single, mighty blast. Unicron swatted him aside, and he would not be seen again for the course of the battle. During the battle, the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] arrived with Autobot reinforcements, but it was abandoned by the time Unicron was destroyed. Starscream and [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] commandeered it to conquer the newly-undefended Earth, and Galvatron was inspired to stow away, with the goal of eventually re-creating his own lost Terran empire. However, none of them were aware that Megatron was in a stasis tube in the ship's medical facility, and that he had been mistakenly re-energized with [[Nucleon]]. Galvatron encountered the disoriented Megatron wandering down a hallway, and all of Galvatron's repressed insanity erupted. {{storylink|Exodus!|Exodus!}}

Galvatron very nearly destroyed Megatron, fueled by a desire to excise the madness from his own mind, but he stopped himself for fear of disrupting his own history. He believed that the timeline he was in was ''not'' the one that would one day produce him, but he still didn't want to take any chances. Megatron, his own mind a chaotic mix with [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]]'s, was barely aware of anything that was happening to him. He was helpless when Shockwave saw him and attacked him, but Galvatron saved him by smashing Shockwave's head against a wall. Galvatron offered a truce to Megatron in the hopes that working with his past self would help him come to grips with the source of his madness. Megatron accepted, but their alliance was cut short when the Ark crashed on Earth again. {{storylink|A Savage Circle}}

Venturing out of the wreckage into the wilderness of northern Canada, Galvatron was set upon by the Canadian army. He did away with them easily, but he was soon confronted by another human, one whom he had almost vaporized in his own time: Spike Witwicky. This younger Spike had been drawn to the area by his [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmaster partner]], [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]], who was inside the Ark. Rejoined, the human/Autobot duo attacked Galvatron as he began to threaten a town. Seeking Autobots that he could mould into a new army, Galvatron sent a "[[mind bug]]" probe aboard the abandoned Ark to scan the minds of the comatose Autobots held in stasis there in order to find suitable candidates. He was taken with [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]]'s willingness to fight fire with fire, [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]]'s ability to kill when required, [[Sunstreaker (G1)|Sunstreaker]]'s lack of concern for humans, [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]]'s willingness to put the needs of the many ahead of the few and [[Silverbolt (G1)|Silverbolt]]'s ferocity.

But as he studied their dreams aboard his [[Galvatron's ship|ship]] and played back scenarios in which these traits had come to the fore, his mind bug suddenly ceased transmitting. Little did Galvatron realize that the device had inadvertantly awoken the five sleeping Autobots and when he headed across to the Ark to investigate, he was confronted by the quintent.

During the battle that followed, he planted mind-controlling devices on Wheeljack and Prowl, designed to bring out the mental flaws in them that he had observed and shape them into a form he could use. Being Autobots, however, they proved to be much better beings than Galvatron had given them credit for, easily overcoming his control and turning their weapons on him. Downed by the blast, Galvatron was immediately leapt upon by Prowl, who planted a device hastily constructed by Wheeljack on his head, plunging the Decepticon in a "sleep" mode of his own. Placed in a stasis capsule, Galvatron slumbered... trapped in a recurring nightmare by the Autobots, in which Rodimus Prime dismembered him over and over again. {{storylink|Perchance to Dream}}

He destroyed [[Colony Omicron]], killing all of its inhabitants save a lone security officer, [[Depth Charge (BW)|Depth Charge]], who eventually tracked him down and captured him - but not before Protoform X destroyed [[Starbase Rugby]] and ''devoured'' an unknown number of the inhabitants. {{storylink|Deep Metal}} The [[Maximal Elder|Maximal Elders]] had Protoform X placed into a [[stasis pod]] aboard an exploration vessel, the ''Axalon''. They instructed its commander, Optimus Primal, to dump him on some barren world in deep space.

Protoform X was among the stasis pods jettisoned by Optimus when the ''Axalon'' was damaged by [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron's]] Predacons, and only fell out of orbit far into the Beast Wars. Battle near his stasis pod shocked him into activation, and he promptly set out to terrorize all nearby Transformers, rending [[Tarantulas (BW)|Tarantulas]] limb from limb and stalking [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] and [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]]. (All right, whose bright idea was it to allow the homicidal maniac to keep his weapons!?) X seemed unstoppable at first, but when one of Silverbolt's missiles jammed his tank treads as he climbed up a mountainside, he lost his grip and tumbled down the rock face in pieces.

As Protoform X lay immobilized, Megatron arrived and, using a blade of pure [[Energon (fuel)|energon]], removed a portion of his indestructible spark. Megatron then had him brought back to the Predacon base and repaired. When X attempted to turn his weapons on his "savior", Megatron revealed that he held half of X's spark in a special cage lined with energon crystals, allowing him to torture the beast at will. Megatron thus welcomed him into the Predacon fold, dubbing him "Rampage". {{storylink|Bad Spark}}

Rampage made no secret of his hatred for his new "master", anticipating the arrival of Maximal reinforcements from Cybertron, and the demise Megatron would surely receive as a result. Megatron had other plans in motion, using Rampage's weaponry to destroy a mountain, proving that the future recorded on the [[Golden Disk (Voyager)|Golden Disk]] was mutable. Rampage's services were further pressed into use when the Predacons assaulted a valley full of [[protohuman]]s, however his contribution came to an end when [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]] forcibly inserted [[Waspinator (BW)|Waspinator]] into his main gun with predictable results. {{storylink|Code of Hero}}

Though a violent sociopath, Rampage was not without compassion. After an attempt by him to regain his spark fragment failed, Rampage encountered a twisted protoform which he dubbed [[Transmutate (character)|Transmutate]]. He quickly befriended it and attempted to have it inducted into the Predacons. Though Megatron ordered the creature destroyed, Rampage persevered with trying to make it a useful addition to the Predacon forces. He became possessive enough to viciously fight with [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] over it. When Transmutate was killed by this fight, Rampage bellowed in grief. {{storylink|Transmutate (episode)|Transmutate}}

Rampage was a major component of the assault on the ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]'' when it appeared as though the Maximals were going to receive reinforcements from Cybertron. The Predacons were driven off by an invisible force — the cloaked [[Transwarp cruiser]] flown by [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]]. The cruiser would later be a part of a strike on the Predacon base, during which Rampage unleashed a barrage of missiles on it. Ravage judged the attack "impressive", and responded by using the ship's weapons to blow Rampage to pieces. {{storylink|The Agenda (Part 1)}} Rampage, of course, survived to lead yet another attack on the ''Axalon''. [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]] rode triumphantly into battle on back of Rampage's tank mode... until an auto-gun knocked him off, and Rampage uncaringly drove straight over him. At Megatron's call to arms, a badly-charred Rampage managed to pull himself together and began trying to pull the ''Axalon'' from its perch, with the aid of a large number of [[arachnoid]]s. He finally met his match in battle when the newly-reformatted Optimus Primal attacked him. The huge Maximal leader simply shoved him aside, but Rampage had the last laugh as his deflected missile sent the Maximal base plunging into the lake. In the end, Depth Charge got the upper hand, and may well have ended the feud then and there, but for the intervention of Quickstrike, which allowed Rampage to sneak away and destroy Depth Charge's ship. {{storylink|Deep Metal|Deep Metal}} Rampage soon met his old enemy again when Rattrap descended to the bottom of the lake to retrieve the [[Sentinel (BW)|Sentinel]] module from the wreckage of the ''Axalon''. :Rampage transforms into a Transmetal king crab with a tank mode that includes rubber treads. In beast mode, he features fully articulated crab legs and pincers that can open, close and be posed in a variety of angles through the use of ratcheting joints. His triple-barreled Gatling missile launcher is stored on the underside of the beast mode, with its barrels flipping to the front during vehicle mode. In this tank mode, the crab legs fit together to form a road wheel network for Rampage's rubber treads to fit over so he can roll upon them. Rolling the tank activates the wheel in the missile launcher, firing any or all of the three missiles that can store in it.

:In robot mode, Rampage is an imposingly large figure with a decent level of articulation due to his ball joints, but because he wears most of his beast mode as a sort of backpack, he is quite back-heavy. His (very) small laser rifle and his triple-barreled launcher can be held in both of his hands. There were two releases of the toy, one with face colors accurate with the show and another with an orange colored face (seen to the right).

:The location of four of the crab legs in the show is not accurate to the toy; the show has the legs on the shoulder pads, whereas the toy situates the legs on Rampage's arms (which mean they are rather cumbersome).

:Back-of-the-box art for Rampage gives technical designations to some of his robot mode parts; they include "terror claws", armor plating, and the ever-dreaded [[Galva-conductor|galva-conductors]].

:The Japanese version features noticeably different colors, including a more extensive use of silver deco on the robot chest and head, a deeper and more intense red "X" on the crab carapace, and most impressively, the robot head and limbs are now made from translucent blood-red plastic instead of opaque orange.

==Notes==
* According to the series background materials published in the ''[[Beast Wars Universe]]'' guidebook, Rampage's body was supposed to have been constructed out of leftover G1-era [[Reproduction|technology]] seen in the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] due to the lack of know-how for protoform technology. How this jibes with his status as "Protoform X" is anyone's guess.
* In some episodes, Rampage's robot-mode mouth is animated as an actual hole in his face; in others the external mouthplates are shown to be in front of a greenish solid construct that looks like an extension of his eyes.
* Some fans are split on how to interpret Rampage's death; he is clearly shown to let go of the energon shard that killed him prior to being stabbed with it, to which Depth Charge reacted in surprise. Because of this, some fans feel this means Rampage, knowing he couldn't win the struggle, allowed himself to be impaled in order to end his torturous existence (and laughing in the giddy euphoria of oblivion), while others believe he deliberately let go to test whether or not Depth Charge would go through with his threat of ending his life, his laughter instead being taken as solace in the knowledge that Depth Charge's obsession with him had successfully corrupted him into the same kind of monster he wanted to kill. Or, Rampage could just be batshit insane.
* No explanation is ever given for why energon suddenly kills Rampage, even though Megatron's been poking his spark with it ever since he appeared. Although the fact the energon was unstable may have had something to do with it.
* Also, the difference between the splitting (and subsequent torturing) of Rampage's spark, and Depth Charge's fateful blow may be seen to be the same as the difference between surgery and hacking at someone with a sword.

Gimlet is a [[Maximal]] who never gets down even in the worst situation. Instead he just likes to party and have a good time and see what happens next. During peacetime he dedicates himself to competitive sports, and during wartime treats that like a sport and keeps score of the Preds he's downed.
