'''Following the ''Ark''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s destruction, the new Dinobots are unleashed! But what ancient horror is behind Grimlock's miraculous transformation?'''

==Synopsis==
The [[Decepticon]]s, led by [[Megatron (SG)|Megatron]], and the [[Autobot]]s, led by [[Optimus Prime (SG)|Optimus Prime]], are battling for control of the [[Arch-Ayr]] fuel dump. [[Soundwave (SG)|Soundwave]] arrives with the [[Mayhem Suppression Squad]], forcing the Autobots to withdraw. A thunderous clatter heralds the coming of [[Grimlock (SG)|Grimlock]] and the [[Dinobot (SG)|Dinobots]], controlled by [[Wheeljack (SG)|Wheeljack]]. The mad scientist vows revenge on Optimus Prime. Optimus, however, convinces Wheeljack to use his [[ember]]less monsters against the Decepticons. But when ordered to attack, the Dinobots turn on each other and scatter.

Back at the Autobot base, Optimus vents his anger at [[Blurr (SG)|Blurr]] and [[Side Burn (RID)|Side Burn]]. He orders all available Autobots to bring back the Dinobots for reprograming. Meanwhile, Megatron comes to the same conclusion, sending some top Decepticons after the beasts.

Some time later, [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] and [[Sideswipe (SG)|Sideswipe]] locate [[Slugfest (SG)|Slugfest]]. But the hulking [[Goryu (SG)|Goryu]] comes to the small Dinobot's aid.

Elsewhere, [[Jazz (SG)|Jazz]], [[Goldbug (SG)|Goldbug]], [[Rodimus (SG)|Rodimus]], and [[Blurr (SG)|Blurr]] debate who will climb a tower to retrieve [[Swoop (SG)|Swoop]].

Cliffjumper and Sideswipe finally defeat the two Dinobots and go after an Autobot passing on the horizon. When cornered, [[Huffer (SG)|Huffer]] admits that he's running from Grimlock.

The group of Autobots bring down Swoop, then Blurr and Rodimus respond to a call from Huffer about Grimlock's location.

Cliffjumper and Sideswipe track Grimlock to an old bunker. Sideswipe shows hesitation. This is the place where Optimus had Sideswipe attacked for insubordination after Optimus killed Sideswipe's commander [[Drench (SG)|Drench]]. That conflict also led to Sideswipe's own comrade [[Cliffjumper (SG)|Cliffjumper's]] death. The current Cliffjumper dismisses those concerns and the two descend deep into the tomb-like bunker. While examining funerary hieroglyphics, a booming voice calls, "GET OUT." But the way out is obscured; the tunnels have changed. Continuing on their journey, Cliffjumper injures his leg in a trap.

Rodimus and Blurr arrive at the bunker. Along the way down, they also run into a booby trap. On the other side, they meet up with Cliffjumper and Sideswipe. Cliffjumper and Rodimus inadvertently tumble into a hidden passage, activating yet another hazard.

At that same moment, Blurr and Sideswipe are harassed by [[Mutant (SG)|mutants]].

Rodimus deactivates the crushing trap, and the two fall through the floor. Rodimus realizes that this place is where the Omega Terminus is hiding. He plans to use it to create his own army. On their way, they locate a vial of healing [[scraplet|scraplets]] who eat dead metal.

The mutants cease their pursuit when Blurr and Sideswipe reach the [[Omega Terminus]] chamber. The four meet up again, crossing a narrow bridge over a deep chasm. On the other side, they find Grimlock, who explains in his rudimentary way that a voice guided him to his chamber. A light shoots out of the Omega Terminus, striking Grimlock. The lumbering beast transforms into a robot, suddenly eloquent. To the surprise of the others, he's been granted an ember and a robot mode, along with a great deal of intelligence.

Grimlock proclaims that the Omega Terminus doesn't want the others here. Cliffjumper challenges him, but the Omega Terminus responds. Four corpses are animated, among them, the native Cliffjumper and Drench. Grimlock divulges that the mutants bring the deactivated robots back here so that the Omega Terminus can use them for new life. A battle ensues. The zombies are dispatched with the scraplets and Grimlock falls over the edge into the chasm. The formless voice again instructs them to leave, and the four are only too pleased to obey.

For his failure, Rodimus is sent to [[Ratchet (SG)|Ratchet]] for an upgrade: a new buzzsaw-hand. Blurr reports to Optimus that the Autobots have gathered eight Dinobots. Unannounced, Grimlock enters the room. He offers his services to Optimus while also asserting his independence. This enrages Prime, but Grimlock's intellect impresses the Autobot leader.

Later, Grimlock breaks into the Decepticon corral, promising the Decepticon-captured "Dinocons" a trip to the Omega Terminus...

==Notes==
* Something may be going on with Side Burn. Though he speaks like a mirrorverse Side Burn would (gently ranting against "undue attention to females"), there are other indicators that he's not exactly what he seems. He hasn't been with the Autobots long. He's one of the few characters, along with Crasher and Demolishor, who isn't based on someone from G1. Blurr remarks that Side Burn doesn't belong, implying there's something off about him. He may very well be the ''[[Robots in Disguise (franchise)|Robots In Disguise]]'' [[Side Burn (RID)|Side Burn]]: at the [[:Image:Optimusprimaluniverseend.jpg|end of the Universe conflict]] he was last seen being tossed into a [[transwarp]] portal by [[Omega Prime]] (who, in turn, was sent not to his own home timeline but to a [[Unicron Trilogy]] universe).
* In the original [[Shattered Glass (issue)|Shattered Glass comic]], the Decepticons had never heard of [[Primus]] until Cliffjumper told them about Him. They are shocked to hear the idea that they are the work of a benevolent Creator. By the time of "Dungeons & Dinobots," word of Cliffjumper's "beliefs" has apparently made rounds. The Autobots consider Cliffjumper crazy and laughable for being "Mr. 'The Planet is a God.'"
'''Shockwave discovers that logic is not always efficient...'''

==Synopsis==
Six hundred thousand "[[Units of time|Meta-Cycles]]" <small title="source in context">[''[[Template:Sic|sic]]'']</small> ago, while the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] raged, the [[Decepticon]] Shockwave foresaw that the incessant fighting between [[Autobot]]s and Decepticons would cause an [[Energon (fuel)|energon]] crisis which would have a devastating effect on the planet itself. Acting alone, Shockwave commenced a project he called '[[Regenesis]]', distilling raw energon and loading it aboard missiles which he sent to various planets, one of which was pre-Ice Age [[Earth]].

"Much later", after the last Ice Age was done and [[wikipedia:mammoth|mammoths]] were dying off as a result, Shockwave traveled to Earth to regulate the planet's wild energon reactions. Unbeknownst to the Decepticon, the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dynobots]] had tracked him to the planet. During the war, the Dynobots had lost face to Shockwave after he had foiled a vital energon-gathering mission, and all five [[Transformer]]s were hungry for revenge.

The energon reaction on Earth's surface was causing energy fluctuations dangerous to unshielded Transformers. Shockwave was prepared, but the Dynobots had no protection. Slag's novel solution involved using the [[CR chambers]] of their ship, the ''[[Skyfire (ship)|Skyfire]]'', to re-design the Dynobots' secondary modes to resemble native animals; the alt-modes' synthetic flesh would act to buffer the Energon radiation. When Grimlock rejected Earth's Ice Age mammalian lifeforms, Slag discovered fossilized remains of dinosaurs, to which Grimlock immediately took.

As he goes about his business, Shockwave observes that Earth is in a state of environmental flux, and species who evolved in the cold temperatures are unable to survive in Earth's warmer climates, let alone understand their predicament. Shockwave finds many parallels to Cybertron's current condition. The Transformers are unknowingly destroying their world. To survive, they must evolve, and those who cannot change will die. Regenesis will insure that the Transformers will be able to survive on other worlds, and will also allow Shockwave to control the balance of power.

The Dynobots located Shockwave on the surface and attacked him. Shockwave had anticipated that the Decepticons might come after him, but the Dynobots were completely unexpected. As the battle goes on, Shockwave realizes that this is about the energon raid he had been sent to clean up, and is further confused. With his core logic failing to be of any use in combating the Dynobots' irrational actions, Shockwave abandoned calculation and allowed a new primal sub-routine to take over. In a synthetic form of rage, he brutally retaliated against the Dynobots, quickly stripping them of their protective synthetic flesh and thus forcing them into [[stasis lock]]. With mental effort Shockwave returned his neural cortex to normal operations and prepared to steal the ''Skyfire'' (his ship had been disabled/destroyed by the Dynobots), but before he could do so, the Dynobots' ship acted on a command pre-programmed by Grimlock and fired upon a nearby volcano. The blast cracked the earth open, spilling Shockwave and the Dynobots into a pit of molten lava.

Elsewhere, Megatron takes note of Shockwave's absence, and assigns Bludgeon to look into his research.

Thousands of years later, in 2006, a team of archaeologists digging in Nevada unearthed a massive, metal, purple hand...
== Items of note ==
* Furman's script said to reimagine the Dinobots as ''[[Beast Wars (franchise)|Beast Wars]]'' characters. Nick Roche decided to apply this to their robot modes as well, including giving them different heads. Giving them dinosaur modes with realistic proportions also led to the Dinobots deliberately having differing sizes. <ref>http://forum.idwpublishing.com/viewtopic.php?t=5196&amp;start=237#117726 Nick Roche: "Back when they reformatted themselves for Earth combat in Spotlight: Shockwave, the script that Simon left on my doorsteo {{sic}} (aflame, and smeared in what I hope was animal excrement) said to reimagine the Dinobots as if they were Beast Wars characters. So rather than just apply this aesthetic to their alt-modes, I utilised it across the board, and gave them robot modes that were less G1, and more Beast Era. [...] The realistic Dino modes had an effect on the physique of the Dynos too, hence the burden of tail and neck kibble (HATE that word!) on Sludge and the lack of mass on Swoop. In his case, there's just no where for his robot mode to hide on his beast mode and have him be a bulky robot. Add to that, he needs to be able to fly too, so while odd-looking, it's all in-keeping with semi logic!"</ref>
* This is the second continuity in which the team has been known as the "Dynobots" before coming to Earth; they previously used the name in Dreamwave's ''[[The War Within]]'' series.
* The story rather cleverly finds a way to bring a group of transforming chrome dinosaurs to modern-day Earth, explaining what would otherwise be an aberration in the Cold War cloak-and-dagger world of IDW's G1 continuity.
* Slag's creative solution to the energon radiation problem is very similar to the original premise of the ''[[Beast Wars (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]'' cartoon.
* But seriously, ''Slag'', the destructive, brawling, no-friends flamethrower, is the one who came up with this?
* [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] orders [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] to find out what the missing Shockwave was working on, tying the story in to ''[[Stormbringer (comics)|Stormbringer]]''.
* A supposed throw-away line on the [[Mechatopia.com]] website, which mentions a find in Nevada and "dinosaur-variant mechanoids", bears fruit in this issue.
* The story is a bit of an homage to the original [[Marvel Comics]] series, wherein Shockwave battles the Dinobots on pre-historic Earth, and they all end up buried for millions of years.
* The Dynobots' ship is unnamed in this story, but would be named as the ''[[Skyfire (ship)|Skyfire]]'' in ''[[Spotlight: Grimlock]]''.
===Overview===
The first "Shattered Glass" story, retroactively dubbed "[[Shattered Expectations]]", was "released" on [[April 1]]st, [[2008]], when Fun Publications "leaked" three pages of what was supposedly the upcoming [[BotCon 2008]] set's accompanying comic. The storyline was a vignette revolving around [[Goldbug (SG)|Goldbug]], [[Grimlock (SG)|Grimlock]], and [[Jazz (SG)|Jazz]] discovering [[Pretender]] technology in a Decepticon laboratory, only to be stopped by [[Starscream (SG)|Starscream]], [[Razorclaw (SG)|Razorclaw]], and the [[Mayhem Suppression Squad]].

It gave the "evil parallel universe" concept a highly campy treatment — including such gags as Grimlock being a genius, Jazz talking like Mr. T, and reverse-[[Furmanism]]s — rendered in [[Derek Yaniger]]'s style and even featuring flat, 1990s-era coloring.

The fandom response was virtually unheard-of, in that it was almost unanimously positive. Then, when it was revealed that the comic was actually an [[April Fools' Day]] gag, the fandom was in turn almost unanimously disappointed. Fun Publications took note of this...

===Creative Team===
The story was written by [[Trent Troop]] and [[Greg Sepelak]], with Sepelak also providing art and Troop also providing colors.
===Overview===
The actual storyline started with the real BotCon comic, which took a more serious and by-the-numbers approach to the universe. Picking up right after the events of "[[Crossing Over]]", the inaugural issue followed [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] as he arrived in the "Shattered Glass" universe. When his confusion with the mirror Autobots' seemingly bizarre behavior caused him to have a violent falling-out with Optimus Prime, Cliffjumper found himself in the company of the more hospitable Decepticons instead. From there, he participated in a battle to stop Optimus Prime's ''[[Ark (SG)|Ark]]'' from leaving for Earth. When [[Megatron (SG)|Megatron]] endangered himself to block a blast from Prime meant for Cliffjumper, it led to the latter destroying the ''Ark''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s launch platform, deciding he would definitely fight for the Decepticons' side.

Afterwards the storyline broke into two parallel branches. One branch was told in a series of online prose stories (and a single vignette comic), which followed the events of the war that Cliffjumper had some part in. The popularity of ''Shattered Expectations'' led to the prose stories taking a somewhat more campy approach to portraying the characters, and a more light-hearted and adventurous tone overall.

"Dungeons & Dinobots" revolved around the arrival of [[Wheeljack (SG)|Wheeljack]]'s [[Dinobot (SG)|Dinobot]]s. As both sides worked on capturing a squad of the beasts, Cliffjumper, [[Sideswipe (SG)|Sideswipe]], [[Blurr (SG)|Blurr]], and [[Rodimus (SG)|Rodimus]] had a strange encounter with the trap-filled chamber of the mysterious [[Omega Terminus]], which had granted Grimlock and the other beasts [[spark|embers]] and a raised level intelligence. The story was intended as a fantasy-adventure<ref name="TroopAllspark">[http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=64373&st=0&p=1390930#entry1390930 Trent Troop answers "Shattered Glass"-related questions]</ref> (with many borrowings from [[wikipedia:Dungeons & Dragons|Dungeons & Dragons]]). It also was meant as a way to turn Grimlock from the brute beast of the BotCon issue to his popular "Shattered Expectations" genius self.

"Do Over" covered the transition from [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to Earth, with Prime attempting to relaunch his ''Ark'' before all space travel was stopped by the [[Plait Expanse]]. [[Ricochet (SG)|Ricochet]] kidnapped Megatron as a ploy to try and delay the launch of the Decepticons' own newly-built ship, the ''[[Nemesis (SG)|Nemesis]]''. When Prime left the ''Ark'' to ensure Megatron would not be killed by any hand but his own, Rodimus took advantage by holding a mutiny and throwing everyone loyal to Prime off the ''Ark''. [[Whisper (SG)|Whisper]] and the [[Predacon (SG)|Predacon]]s in turn launched a rescue attempt that was ultimately successful, but not before the ''Nemesis'' was forced to launch to chase the ''Ark''. Prime and his loyalists and Megatron and his rescuers thus found themselves stranded on Cybertron.

Meanwhile, the remaining Cybertronians successfully reached Earth in their ships, but a combination of a pitched battle and a surprise attack by the [[human]]s caused both ships to crash-land on the planet below.

"The Desert Heat!" was a two-page comic made available for free online, intended as both a preview for "Eye in the Sky" and as a promotion of the upcoming Club Exclusive figure [[Heatwave]]. It followed Heatwave as he awoke from his emergency escape [[stasis pod]] and started a search for the other Decepticon pods, in a way that highlighted his technopathic abilities. His first discovery was [[Soundwave (SG)|Soundwave]], whom he rescued from being a display in a [[Wyatt's Roadsideaganza|human tourist attraction]], after first engaging in pitched battle with some local "wildlife".

"Eye in the Sky" dealt with the Cybertronians' initial experiences on Earth. The Autobots encountered the [[Witwicky#Shattered Glass continuity family|Witwicky brothers]], and used their new allies' knowledge to hijack [[Burpleson Air Force Base|a military base]]. From there they gained control of a [[Global Orbital Defense Satellite|potentially destructive satellite]] created by the fascist and power-hungry government of a post-World War III [[United States of America|United States]]. The Decepticons, meanwhile, fell in with the friendly and rebellious [[Professor Arkeville]] and [[Sephie Beller|his]] [[Will Hayes|three]] [[Rick Ottman|interns]]. The humans helped the Decepticons find their remaining stasis pods and the crash site of the ''Nemesis'', then destroy the hijacked base and satellite.

"Blitzwing Bop" continued the Cybertronians' adventures on Earth. An accident and fight involving the Autobots' attempt at building a [[Stellar Spanner]] led to both Heatwave being sent back to Cybertron, and [[Blitzwing (SG)|Blitzwing]] granted the ability to broadcast disruptive Earth music over the Autobots' emergency frequency. While at first this proved to be a useful deterrent against the Autobots, the ability started growing uncontrollably in power. Both sides eventually were affected to the point of possible physical damage, forcing almost everyone into emergency [[stasis lock]]. [[Blaster (SG)|Blaster]] and Soundwave, immune thanks to their communications abilities, fought over the increasingly put-upon Blitzwing, while [[Beachcomber (SG)|Beachcomber]], immune due to being completely insane, attacked the Decepticon base. However, the interference of Officer [[Thunderwing (SG)|Thunderwing]] on one front and Arkeville and his interns on the other, led to the Decepticons eventually being able to fend off Blaster and Beachcomber's attacks and cure Blitzwing. This story was intended to be in the style of a "'Shattered Glass' [[The Transformers (cartoon)|Sunbow episode]]". <ref name="TroopAllspark"/>

The second branch of the "Shattered Glass" storyline was told in the [[2009]] [[Hasbro Transformers Collectors' Club (magazine)|Transformers Collectors' Club magazine]] comic ''Reunification'', which tended to have the more serious tone of the original BotCon comic (though with [[Dirge (SG)|a few]] [[Aquarius (SG)|exceptions]]). Following on from the events of ''[[Transcendent]]'', [[Landquake (Timelines)|Landquake]], [[Breakaway (Classics)|Breakaway]], [[Topspin (Classics)|Topspin]], and [[Alpha Trion (SG)|Alpha Trion]] traveled with [[Skyfall (Cybertron)|Skyfall]]'s body to the "Shattered Glass" universe, and found themselves mixed up in the universe's strange politics, running in roughly the same time period as between "Do Over" and "Blitzwing Bop".

Trion embarked on his plans to assassinate both Prime and Megatron and take control of Cybertron, while leaving Rodimus in control of Earth. He also revealed his true plans to use his four interdimensional "guests" as tools to aid his conquest, then kill them, which led to Landquake, Breakaway, and Topspin having to escape with Skyfall's body. They eventually met up with a strange ally in the form of [[Aquarius (SG)|Aquarius]], who urged them to seek both refuge and their last group member by going to Megatron. Prime, meanwhile, had his own plans to use new superweapon [[Omega Doom]] to destroy the Decepticons and embark on galactic conquest, after first successfully using Omega to deal with an assassination attempt by Trion.

The plot threads eventually came to a single point as Omega Doom and the fleeing interdimensional travelers converged on Megatron's doorstep. Megatron's assassination by [[Cyclonus (SG)|Cyclonus]] eventually led to Landquake, Breakaway, Topspin, Skyfall, and Heatwave being finally reunited as [[Nexus Prime]], who then resurrected Megatron as Galvatron, and defeated Omega Doom.

The final prose story of the main arc, "Transhuman", is expected to wrap up loose ends and tie the two parallel storylines together.<ref name="PeteSinclairTFCC"/>

''Around Cybertron'', meanwhile, was a series of comic strips which involved [[Rook (SG)|Rook]] and his Autobot journalist crew reporting either on the events of "Reunification", or on side stories featuring minor characters in the "Shattered Glass" universe.

===Creative Team===
The ''Shattered Glass'' comic featured a return of the then-retired Transformers artist [[Don Figueroa]], with [[Espen Grundetjern]] on colors, and was written by [[Pete Sinclair]] and [[Ben Yee|Benson Yee]].

The prose stories were all written by [[Trent Troop]] and [[Greg Sepelak]], but with a different set of artists on each story:
*"Dungeons & Dinobots" & "The Desert Heat!": [[Evan Gauntt]]
*"Do Over": [[Yūki Ōshima]] (art) & [[Drew Eiden]] (colors)
*"Eye in the Sky": [[Tom Whalen]]
*"Blitzwing Bop": [[Chad Porter]]
*"Transhuman": ???

''Reunification'' was written by [[Forest Lee]], with art by [[Robby Musso]] and colors by [[Josh Perez]].

''Around Cybertron'' was written and illustrated by [[Jesse Wittenrich]].
