A mismatched group of Decepticons find themselves in the crosshairs of the deadliest team of killers there is... the Decepticon Justice Division!

Synopsis
As a phase sixer, Black Shadow is one of the most feared Decepticons, having tackled the Wreckers single-handedly, defeated the entire 113th Batallion, and massacred the population of Rigel IV. But when he accepted a bribe to blow up a fleet of War Worlds, he landed himself in the sights of the Decepticon Justice Division, a team of vicious killers fanatically dedicated to Megatron and charged with destroying all who cross him. It's not a pretty sight when the D.J.D. catch up to Black Shadow: melted by Helex, crushed by Tesarus and electrocuted by Kaon, he is explosively finished off when D.J.D. leader Tarn uses his ability of "weaponized conversation" to stop the pulse of his spark. Their task done, the D.J.D. set off to find their next target on the planet of Clemency—a target guilty of simply living.

On the Lost Light, Ratchet, First Aid and Ambulon combine their medical expertise to save the life of the wounded Rung, though the psychiatrist remains comatose. A few hours later, Red Alert visits Rung in secrecy, believing—in his increasing paranoia—that the attempt on Rung's life was a deliberate one after Red told him about the voice he heard from beneath the ship. Certain that he is next, Red hides a data slug containing video he has taken of the voice's owner—Overlord—on Rung's body and bids him goodbye. But a medical Diagnostic Drone has observed the entire thing, and soon, a shadowed figure arrives in the medibay and recovers the slug...

On Clemency, a band of Decepticon scavengers consisting of Misfire, Spinister, Krok, Crankcase and Flywheels are in the process of draining fuel from the vast array of Transformer corpses that litter the war-torn world when one of them, a chipper fellow named Fulcrum, proves to be still alive. After a slight panic over the possibility that he might be a zombie, the six 'cons settle down around a fire to talk about the great battle in Clemency's past, and the grim reality of war and how it reduces lives to statistics. Fulcrum is shocked to discover that the war is over, barely able to comprehend such a thing, and the other Decepticons mumble about how meaningless it all turned out to be and how unclear their goals had been anyway. In spite of this, though, when one of the Autobot bodies stoking the Decepticons' fire proves to still be alive, Krok casually kills the poor 'bot.

Back on the Lost Light, Chromedome visits Brainstorm in his lab to get the scientist's analysis of Skids's mysterious gun, which Chromedome palmed from the theoretician when he was distracted. The weapon immediately blew up when Brainstorm tried to examine it, but he was able to recognise at least some of the engineering, and has concluded that as impossible as it may seem, the gun may have come from somewhere known as "The Institute"...

As dawn breaks on Clemency, the Decepticons resume their scavenging, only for Misfire to suddenly break away from the group, thinking that he has spotted the Necrobot, a mythical Grim Reaper-like figure in Cybertronian culture. Instead, what he has discovered is a P-6 Worldsweeper, a famous model of gigantic Decepticon spaceship cast in the image of the faction's insignia. Investigating the vessel, the Decepticons make some horrifyingly strange discoveries: a ceiling covered entirely in brain modules, tanks of warped, malformed protoforms, a non-functional robot made entirely of wood, and a corridor composed of organic flesh that proves to have been responsible for causing the ship to crash, having bled into the fuel supply and polluted it. Misfire in particular is aghast and advocates immediate departure, but Fulcrum, coming around to the idea of new horizons, is eager to investigate. All emotions on the ship quickly turn to terror, however, when Krok receives a communication from the D.J.D., announcing that one of their number is on the Division's list. Tarn signs off with the promise that if the guilty party is handed over, the other six will be allowed to watch. The numbers don't add up, and Fulcrum assumes the D.J.D. simply miscounted their life-signs... but Krok soon discovers that there is indeed a seventh party on the ship, unconscious and sealed in a stasis tube... Grimlock!

Fulcrum: "Ah! Now! Just—just wait a second! Just— The thing about me—my big thing is this: I'm really not keen on dying. Now survival—oh wow, huge fan. Put me down for some of that. Besides, we don't even know each other! You might like me! You might find me—disarming! Yes! I'd disarm you!"<br>
Spinister: "You'd what me?"<br>
Flywheels: "Careful—he's using words to confuse and frighten us."

"Go away. I'm busier than you've ever been and I'm going more important things than you've ever done."<br>
"It's Chromedome."<br>
"So?"<br>
"So you have to be nice to me, I'm your only friend. Why are you—?"<br>
"Building weapons whilst hanging from the ceiling? Because no one else can. I was hoping Perceptor would walk in."
:—Brainstorm and Chromedome

"Chromedome, you're looking at is a bona fide Binary Gun."<br>
"What's a Binary Gun?"<br>
"I'm not sure—I've only just made up the name. But I called it that because inside there's only room for two cartridges, here and here."<br>
"So what does it do? Where'd Skids get it? Why'd he carry it around with him all the time?"<br>
"I don't know! I've done my bit...!"<br>
"You made the gun blow up and then you gave it a name! I could have done that and I'd have come up with a better name!"
:—Brainstorm and Chromedome again

"But there's always been a war! That's like saying there's no more blue or—or the weather's stopped!"
:—Fulcrum catches up on recent history

"I always dreamed of captaining my own P-6—Followin' the likes of Shockwave and Sixshot and the other big guns. I'd have called it something noble and majestic, like Mega Starpuncher or Mighty Spaceship."
:—Crankcase

"You know, there are some Decepticons who, upon finding themselves in a skin-covered room surrounded by aborted protoforms and mechanoids made of bark, would rub their hands together, marvel at the universe's infinite capacity for surprise and dive right in. I am not one of those Decepticons. I say we run away screaming."<br>
"I am one of those Decepticons, Misfire, and I say we stick around—because frankly, this is amazing."<br>
"What's amazing?"<br>
"This! Us! Now! Who owns this ship? Where are they now? Where will we be an hour from now, or tomorrow, or next month? The answer to all those questions is "Who knows?" And that's a great answer! That's the best answer ever! All our lives we've followed orders—all our lives someone else has always told us what to do next! Well, not anymore! For the first time in forever, we can do whatever we like! We're free!"
:—Misfire and Fulcrum

Notes
*Black Shadow's design is based on his Generations toy. He was established to be a phase sixer in his sole previous IDW appearance in Last Stand of the Wreckers #2.
*The 113th Battalion is another use of the number 113 by James Roberts, referring to the issue of the UK comic that got him hooked on the series.
*This is the first appearance of Rigel IV in a Transformer story, but other planets that orbit the same star have shown up before.
*Black Shadow's bribe is in Shanix, a little-referenced Cybertronian currency that first appeared in issue #113 of the Marvel UK series. It's seen some previous mentions in IDW continuity in "Chaos Theory", Part 1 and "Stick Together".
*The Warworld was the Decepticon mothership in the Marvel Generation 2 comic. The idea of a fleet of multiple Warworlds originated with the non-canon Alignment.
*The Decepticon Justice Division were first mentioned in one of Roberts's earliest IDW works, Last Stand of the Wreckers #1, and have come up on occasion since them. They are named after cities on Cybertron; specifically, the "First Five Cities" to fall to the Decepticons in the war, which were listed in issue #4.
*Helex has a Turbofox on a leash.
*Vos's dialogue, referred to as the "Primal Vernacular", is written using the Cyberglyphics symbol language from the live-action movie continuity. Employing the substitution cypher regularly used by Titan in their UK Transformers comic shows that most of his speech bubbles are nonsense, however, save for the first, which reads: "So tired me go night xth".
*This is not the first time Roberts has written a character has having been "talked to death", though this version is a lot more literal than the reference made in Bullets to a Decepticon who killed himself rather than listen to Prowl drone on!
*Kol was previously seen in Generation 2 #9, but where there it was a planet, here it is referred to as a system. Perhaps it was named for its star?
*That Flywheels should freak out so seriously at the prospect of a zombie is fitting, given his prominent role in the greatest Transformers zombie story, Marvel UK's "City of Fear!" (indeed, his only prominent role in anything before now).
*A device or creature looking like a horseshoe crab can be seen in a cannister on Brainstorm's desk, which might be supposed to be a small version of the Madmachine from the Headmasters episode, "The Great Cassette Operation".
*Hydrus 4 is the planet of origin for Nucleon, seen in the original Marvel series. Its sister world Hydrus 5 was created by James Roberts and first mentioned in "Bullets".
*Chromedome palmed Skids's gun between pages 4 and 5 of issue 4.
*The planet Elpasos is mentioned in passing, a world that debut in—you guessed it, issue #113 of the Marvel UK series. It got a previous IDW mention in Last Stand of the Wreckers #5.
*Reference is made to "Nova Peak", which is prrrrrobably the same thing as Nova Point.
*Grimlock was last seen at the close of the Maximum Dinobots mini-series, over three years before the publication of this issue. Since then, all we've heard is that he had left Garrus-9 after it was sacked by the Decepticons under unrevealed circumstances, as detailed in Last Stand of the Wreckers #4.

Errors
*Spinister was previously shown to be among the Decepticons who had already returned to Cybertron in Robots in Disguise #1.

Crew Manifest
*The "Story so far" segment on the inside front cover notes that "a number of Delphi's patients" were brought to the Lost Light, which is the first mention that anyone other than Fortress Maximus came back with Ratchet and the medics.

Grimlock!
Quotes

Grimlock!
Quotes

"I always dreamed of captaining by own P-6—Followin' the likes of Shockwave and Sixshot and the other big guns.

Well, not anymore! For the first time in forever, we can do whatever we like! We're free!"

Notes
*Black Shadow's design is based on his Generations toy. He was established to be a phase sixer in his sole previous IDW appearance in The Transformers: Last Stand of the Wreckers #2.

Covers (3)
* Cover A: Tarn, by Alex Milne and Josh Perez
* Cover B: Misfire, Crankcase, Spinister, Flywheels and Krok, by Nick Roche and Joana Lafuente
* Cover RI: Shockwave and Laserbeak by Marcelo Matere and Priscilla Tramontano, the second half of a combined image formed with the RI cover to Robots in Disguise #7

Fan fiction (or fanfic) is fiction written by fans of a property without the explicit or even insinuated approval of the copyright holder. This allows for many fans to do what they most desire with the material that they are fiddling around with, be it to make a serious and epic story or to just plain mess around and play with their little fantasies. Needless to say, not all fanfics are good, but which are and which aren't is mostly up to the reader's discretion.

Topics
Over the years, an incredibly wide variety of Transformers fanfic has been written, including straightforward adventure stories, crossovers with other properties, parodies, incredibly creepy and/or awesome stories in which gruesome acts of Decepticon-on-fleshling violence are described in tender, loving detail, and, of course, "erotica" of varying degrees of slagged-upness. Many female humans have taken to badly writing romantic fanfic either about Starscream and Alexis/themselves, or any given male character with any other male character.

Popular Transformers fanfic topics
*Self-insertion/Original characters: Guess what, you're a Transformer and everyone likes you the best! Here, have the Matrix of Leadership.
*Fan-written episodes: Can range from one story mimicking the structure of a television episode to an entire fake season or whole movie. Usually written in script form.
*Romance: Pick any two Transformers characters at all. Have them make out and exchange pillow talk. Scale apparently doesn't matter here (not that it does anywhere else for that matter).
*Extra-humanized Transformers: Sisters! Cousins! Babies! Daddies! Almost a subcategory of "romance", since adding even more organic-like components to Transformers really helps along with the... ahem... sexual intercourse. Scale also does not matter here.
*Crossovers: Because civilization is not complete until Soundwave somehow becomes human (or not, who cares? It's a fanfiction!) and enrolls at Riverdale High.
*Character-driven stories: What does Cosmos think about when he's alone in space? What's a typical day for Big Daddy?
*What if? stories: What if Optimus Prime had never become Autobot leader? What if the Ark had never crash-landed on Earth? The possibilities are endless. Notably, some official publications have also played around with various alternate universes.
*Absolute fanwanking: A nerd's nerd will write these, and they probably involve things like Berko or Forestonite and about a hundred other obscure characters. How does everything fit together? Let's connect the dots, The Question-style!

Hard work pays off
In recent years, a few Transformers fanfic writers have made the jump to writing Hasbro-sanctioned fiction, including James Roberts, Ben Yee, Greg Sepelak, Trent Troop, Josh van Reyk and Shaun Knowler.
The live-action film series is an umbrella term that refers to the series of theatrical feature films directed by Michael Bay beginning in 2007, including the vast amount of ancillary fiction created for it.
Continuities
:See also: Movie continuity

The live-action film series is a continuity family, and as such includes all continuities concerning closely related characters and settings. TFWiki has identified three primary timelines for the series:

* The main movie timeline consisting of the films, novels, comic books and various other elements that don't contradict each other.
* The Titan Magazines movie timeline, which began tying into the larger film-based continuity by IDW but eventually gave up. This continuity also follows events in a splinter timeline where Megatron won the battle of Mission City.
* The Sector Seven ARG timeline where the film series is a fictionalization of real events.
* Micro-continuities also exist in the form of video games, some toy bios, and certain comic story threads that are incompatible with each other.
* Obama was the real Enemy.
The Transcendent Technomorphs refer to this continuity family as the Tyran universal streams.

Grapple shows Hoist a working model of a Solar Power Tower he wants to build and the two of them take it to Optimus Prime. Optimus is occupied at the moment because Spike is teaching him how to play basketball. Optimus likes Grapple's concept, but rejects the plan because it would be difficult to defend the tower against attack.

The conversation is cut short when Teletraan I alerts them that Powerglide has been shot down by Starscream and Skywarp. Hoist and Grapple leave to repair the Autobot plane. After repairs are finished, they start back, with Grapple attempting to convince Hoist to build the tower with him, regardless of Prime's orders, but Hoist points out they can't do it alone

Their conversation is cut short when they are trapped by the Constructicons. Scrapper says they've left the Decepticons and proposes a joint project. Grapple, enamored with his solar tower idea, agrees, but wants proof of their partnership. They promise to bring proof back and fly off.

On their return to Decepticon headquarters, Megatron confronts the Constructicons with video tape of their conversation with Grapple. They all swear loyalty to Megatron, and insist they plan to betray the Autobots. Satisfied with their explanation, Megatron lets them go with a present. They return to Grapple and Hoist with "proof", an entire truckload of energon. Convinced that they are working in good faith, Grapple and Hoist agree to the partnership. The Constructicons are soon stealing construction materials from the humans for the project.

Meantime, Optimus is playing basketball with Tracks, Inferno and Smokescreen. After he shuts Tracks down during a drive to the net, Prime notices that Tracks needs maintenance, but no one knows where Hoist is. The Autobot leader sends Powerglide out to find the missing Autobots. Powerglide finds the solar tower and reports back.

Grapple is in his element, directing the Constructicons as the tower is built, and blissfully unaware of their deception. The Constructicons merge to form Devastator in order to place the sun-focusing sphere at the top of the tower. With the last piece in place, the tables turn. Megatron attacks Grapple and Hoist and claims the tower as his own. The Decepticons get to work collecting the energy.

The Autobots arrive and attack, quickly overwhelming the Decepticons, who retreat behind the tower. The Autobots follow, to find that the Constructicons have formed Devastator and he's not so easy to defeat. Prime tricks Devastator into trying to kick Smokescreen but he kicks the tower instead. A few more rounds of laser fire send Devastator crashing into the tower, demolishing it. Megatron and the Constructicons retreat.

The Autobots dig in the debris to try and find Grapple and Hoist. Brawn discovers them encased in a sheet of metal and punches it apart. Grapple and Hoist apologize for the trouble they've caused. Prime is in a forgiving mood, but says they have to clean up the mess themselves. As the others drive off, Grapple and Hoist fondly remember the tower.
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* One gun, many lasers:
** Skywarp only has two weapons to fire, yet about a dozen different laser beams are shown streaking past Powerglide.
* Skywarp's under-wing insignia are missing throughout the opening sequence.
* As Wheeljack gives Grapple his thumbs-up, the glow effect of his flashing "ears" is misaligned from the ears themselves at the start and end of the shot.
* Teletraan I gets the radio-muffle on its voice as it announces that Powerglide has been shot down.
* Improbable viewpoints:
** As Scrapper treaties with the Autobots, a random rock opens up, and out pops a video camera. While this does explain how Megatron and Starscream can watch the conversation from Decepticon Headquarters, it begs the question of just how many random rocks the Decepticons had to load up with cameras to ensure that they'd actually catch something.
** The camera's angle changes during Scrapper's speech, even though it's clearly fixed in place.
** The camera's angle has changed again when Megatron shows it to the Constructicons.
** The view of Grapple and Hoist that Powerglide relays back to Autobot Headquarters is clearly not taken from a moving airplane.
* Scrapper's eyeband turns gray as he points toward Long Haul approaching with the energon cubes.
* As he welds alongside Hoist, Grapple's butt changes from gray to orange.
* Flying Autobots:
** Prime leaps toward the basket with a flight sound effect.
* Tracks is supposed to be emitting some kind of malfunctioning-type of noise as Prime helps him to his feet, but it's barely audible as such.
* Tracks is missing one of his missile launchers as Spike runs up to join the group on the basketball court.
* Scavenger's face is almost entirely dark gray as he discusses his welding troubles with Grapple.
* In a bizarre stylistic decision, the Constructicons' second combination sequence does not feature the transforming sound. Instead, as they convert to their combined forms, they get a sound effect normally reserved for energy effects. Each one glows blue after transforming, accompanied by an even more bizarre tinkling noise.
* As usual, the apportionment of Devastator's components is off; Long Haul forms about 90% of the torso, with Hook forming the remainder (it should be split almost evenly between them.) Everyone else is correct, which puts this episode ahead of most of its contemporaries.
* Not that Devastator isn't out of whack in every episode, but when the Autobots first approach them, Scrapper's shovel alone is several times taller than the Autobots. When Devastator is about to kick Smokescreen, one of Devestator's legs is roughly three times the size of the Autobot.
* Inferno appears for a single shot during the battle, standing alongside Optimus as they rock in the breeze from Devastator's hand-swipe. Though he was playing basketball earlier in the episode, he's completely absent from the battle group before and after this single shot. Best guess is that it should have been Ironhide.
* Devastator's back, ie Long Haul's cargo bed, is purple throughout the episode. It should be green.
* As he and the others fire on Devastator, one of Powerglide's laser blasts doesn't quite line up with the corresponding sound effect.
* Prime is missing the horizontal lines on his tummy grille as the Autobots cheer.
* After Brawn finds the ruined model of the Solar Power Tower, Cliffjumper steps into the frame, colored yellow like Bumblebee.
* As Hoist and Grapple first face Prime, Grapple's front bumper is bent in the middle. This may be meant to signify damage from his captivity... but the damage disappears after this one shot.
* As Prime accepts the pair's apologies, Hoist's right arm is missing, as is the top of Grapple's left arm.
* When Grapple picks up the ruined model, one of its solar panels is gray instead of gold.

Continuity errors
* The solar panels seem to be the only essential component of the tower. Why do they need to be up on this huge cumbersome tower?
* In robot mode, Grapple and Hoist could easily have leaped over the boulder that first blocks their path. We'll give them a pass and say they were just panicked.
* Scrapper leaps down onto the boulder after the first commercial break... but he already leapt downward off the boulder when dodging the Autobots' fire.
* A giant paper blueprint? Really? The super-advanced space robots haven't switched over to a paperless office yet?
* Optimus's "Battle formation! Roll!" order is kind of strange, since the Autobots already appear to have both items covered.

Continuity notes
* Scrapper claims that the Constructicons admired Grapple's work back on Cybertron. This contradicts the earlier statement in "Heavy Metal War" that the Constructicons were built recently on Earth, but fits with the later accounts of their history given in "The Secret of Omega Supreme" and "Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4".
* Gadgets and powers:
** Powerglide has a video camera that extends from his nosecone, right in front of his canopy.
** The Autobots can shoot lasers out of their headlights when they drive into battle. The idea never crossed their minds in "The Autobot Run". One is tempted to fanwank the error away by saying that the events of that episode inspired them to install these extra armaments.
** Tracks has twin missile launchers in his car-mode hood.
** Devastator uses his eye beams yet again. He loves those things!
** Cliffjumper's glass gas resembles a snowball or comet, and can be repelled by a strong wind (possibly a call-back to his bio weakness, which says that he must remain upwind of it or fall victim to its effects.)
** Megatron has a compartment in his chest that holds a pair of binoculars.

Real-world references
* "Here Comes the Sun!" Grapple says, completing his Solar Power Tower model and quoting the title of a Beatles tune.
* The Autobots make their second foray into the sports world, as Spike teaches Optimus Prime about basketball. Prime learns to <s>drool</s> dribble the ball, spins the ball on one finger, and orders Spike to "Compute, quickly!" as he passes the ball to him. Later, Prime quotes the stereotypical sportscaster ("He shoots, he scores!") while driving for a <s>layoff</s> lay up. Later still, he rolls the basketball across his arms and shoulders.
* Star Wars sound effects:
** When Prime leaps toward the basketball goal, he gets the Death Star firing/Alderaan exploding sound effect sequence.
** Megatron takes off from the ruined power tower with the same sound effect. The Constructicons follow him with the rest of that sound effect, along with some X-Wing Fighter diving sounds.

Trivia
* When remastered for DVD by Rhino Entertainment, the re-created title card for the episode was incorrectly rendered as "The Master Builder". This title appeared on all associated material included with the DVD set, and can be seen in the screen shot at right. Oddly enough, while the same incorrect title card appears in the 25th Anniversary "Matrix of Leadership" edition by Shout! Factory, the correct title appears on the DVD menu and the box set's episode guide.
* The Autobots have a color-coded alert system. When Teletraan I discovered that Powerglide was shot down he called for "condition magenta". When Optimus Prime discovered Grapple and Hoist were working with the Constructions, he called for "disaster code blue" and ordered a strike force to assemble.
* Megatron gave the Constructicons his energon because he says that it's his most precious possession. Was anyone else expecting the fusion cannon?
* Seriously, can you imagine the size of the ball that the Autobots need to play basketball?
