Nine million years ago, during the [[Golden Age]] of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Soundwave was one of [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]]'s first [[Decepticon]]s and was seen flying through the planet's skies alongside his leader and [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] by [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Orion Pax]]. {{storylink|War Dawn}} When the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] with the [[Autobot]]s erupted not long after, Soundwave served as Megatron's intelligence officer and most loyal subordinate, and as keeper of the [[Decepticon Mini-Cassette]]s, diminutive robots designed for espionage. While Soundwave was a nigh-constant battlefield presence, he would himself often play no major role in combat, more regularly being present merely to deploy his cassette minions, and, off the field of battle, to replay for his fellow Decepticons the information they would gather for him.

After five million years of war, Cybertron found itself in the throes of an energy crisis, and Soundwave was charged with spying on the Autobots to learn how they were dealing with it. Using his unconventional [[alternate mode]] as a space-age "lamp-post" to position himself on the street outside the Autobot city-state of [[Iacon (city-state)|Iacon]], Soundwave was able to deploy [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] to snoop even closer. Laserbeak discovered that the Autobots were preparing to depart Cybertron to search for new sources of energy on other planets, and Soundwave quickly took this news back to Megatron, prompting the Decepticons to pursue the Autobots' [[Ark (G1)|spacecraft]] when it left the planet. After navigating a treacherous meteor shower, the Decepticons intercepted and boarded the Autobots' ship, and battle erupted between the two factions, during which Soundwave displayed his prowess by holding his own against [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]], [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]], [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] ''and'' [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]]. However, the fighting was soon cut short when the Autobot spacecraft was caught in the gravity of the nearby prehistoric planet [[Earth]] and crash-landed. The ship impacted with the side of a [[Mount St. Hilary|volcano]] in a collision so violent that all the Transformers onboard, Soundwave included, were knocked off line.

Four million years later, in the Earth year 1984, a volcanic eruption jarred the ship's computer, [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]] back on-line, and it reactivated and repaired the Transformers indiscriminately, reformatting Soundwave with the Earthen alternate mode of a portable cassette player. Before the Autobots were restored, the Decepticons pulled out of the ruined hulk of the ship, and Megatron immediately charged Soundwave with drawing up plans for a new [[Victory (G1)|space cruiser]] to return the Decepticons to Cybertron. Soundwave then deployed [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] to help [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] ransack a power plant to gather materials for construction, sent [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] to scare off humans who came to investigate, and dispatched Laserbeak to search the planet for sources of energy. Laserbeak soon returned to report his discovery of an offshore oil platform, which the Decepticons promptly attacked, gathering oil and storing it in the [[energon cube]]s Soundwave generated from his chest. The Autobots soon arrived to stop the Decepticons, but Megatron collapsed the rig, forcing the Autobots to save the human workers and allowing the Decepticons to escape. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}}

Seeking to exploit the data that Teletraan I had gathered on Earth in its short time on the planet, Soundwave positioned himself close to the Autobots' base, where he transformed into his cassette player mode and allowed himself to be found by the Autobots' new human friend, [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]]. Unaware of the true nature of the unassuming tape player he had found, Spike brought Soundwave into the Autobot ship and then left him unattended, allowing the Decepticon communicator to release Ravage. The feline felon interfaced with Teletraan I and located the computer's data on energy sources, which Soundwave then recorded. Soundwave was soon caught in the act by Spike, but managed to escape to report to Megatron. Using the information Soundwave obtained, Megatron decided to attack [[Sherman Dam]], where Soundwave instructed Rumble to use his earthquake-generating powers to create a tidal wave that maximized the plant's energy output. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 2}}

The Decepticons' raids continued apace, until only one more theft was necessary. As Megatron put his plan to attack an Air Force base together, Starscream attempted another of his infamous coups by trying to shoot him in the back, but Soundwave proved his loyalty to Megatron by warning his leader of the attack. The subsequent raid on the Air Force base went smoothly, and the Decepticons were at last poised to return to Cybertron when the Autobots made one last-ditch attack on their launch site. Soundwave and his tapes went into action, but Megatron soon called the battle off and ordered the Decepticons to board the completed space cruiser. Soundwave served as the ship's helmsman as it blasted off from Earth, but the flight proved a short one, as Soundwave discovered that the Autobot spy [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] has used his invisibility powers to stow away. Before the Decepticons could react, Mirage had sabotaged the ship and sent it plummeting back towards Earth. With Soundwave unable to stop its descent, the ship crashed into the ocean, and the Autobots believed the Decepticons destroyed. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 3}}

In truth, however, Soundwave and the other Decepticons had survived the crash, and after months of working in secret, reconstructed their spaceship into an [[Decepticon Headquarters|undersea headquarters]]. The villains revealed their continued existence to the world when Soundwave again used his inconspicuous tape player form to infiltrate a solar power plant and proceeded to take control of it, allowing the Decepticons to harvest its energy that they planned to send back to Cybertron over their new intergalactic "[[space bridge]]" transport system. Soundwave repelled an Autobot counterattack by wielding Megatron in pistol mode, but ultimately, the plan backfired when Megatron himself was caught in the space bridge's pull and believed destroyed, leaving Starscream to take control of the Decepticons. {{storylink|Transport to Oblivion}} Soundwave chafed under Starscream's inept leadership, and their first sortie with the air commander in charge ended in a comical defeat that saw Soundwave bowled over by Prowl as he ran away. Thankfully, Megatron soon returned, with a scheme to steal [[Doctor Alcazar]]'s [[antimatter]] formula, and Soundwave happily latched back onto his master. Soundwave participated in a Decepticon attack on Autobot Headquarters when Optimus Prime was mistakenly believed to be fatally wounded. {{storylink|Divide and Conquer}} Soon after, during a scheme to drain heat energy from the Earth's core, the Decepticons unearthed the frozen body of Starscream's old friend [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]] in the North Pole. Soundwave helped reactivate him by delivering a million-volt shock to his systems, but Skyfire ultimately sided with the Autobots to stop the Decepticons' plan. {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}} Later, Soundwave and [[Reflector (G1)|Reflector]] were sent on a data-gathering mission, acquiring information about the [[Great Falls]] to facilitate a Decepticon attack on the hydro-electric plant there. {{storylink|S.O.S. On a mission to the Peruvian Andes, Soundwave successfully proved that the legend of the Incan [[Crystal of Power]] was true when he deduced that the pyramid containing the fabled gemstone rested on a shaft leading to the Earth's core. On a mission to gather steel for a weapon frame to channel the crystal's power, Soundwave and Reflector were ambushed by [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]] and [[Windcharger (G1)|Windcharger]] in mid-air, and Soundwave found himself driven face-first into a mountain by the small Autobot in the first of several clashes that they would engage in over the years. Soundwave tried to fight back with his own rifle, and even tried blasting Brawn with Megatron in pistol mode, but the little Autobot took everything he had to give and escaped in one piece. {{storylink|Fire on the Mountain}} Later, Soundwave's mind-reading abilities came into use again when he scanned the brains of the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]]s, [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]], [[Slag (G1)|Slag]] and [[Sludge (G1)|Sludge]], in order to determine their weaknesses. {{storylink|War of the Dinobots}}

When Megatron schemed to use the space bridge to transport Cybertron into Earth's orbit, he required human slaves to gather the energy that would result from the massive natural catastrophes such an action would cause. Soundwave and his cassettes were dispatched to capture [[Sparkplug Witwicky]], who served as a guinea pig for the mind-controlling [[hypno-chip]]s created by the Decepticons' new ally, [[Doctor Arkeville]]. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 1}} The plan to transport Cybertron was subsequently accomplished despite Autobot interference, and Soundwave ensured that energy collection could begin quickly by forcing the Autobots to flee with a barrage of painful audio disruptor waves. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} Soundwave later transported a cache of energon cubes to the orbiting Cybertron, and was still there when a group of Autobots arrived, searching for the hypno-chip master control. In another encounter with Brawn, Soundwave was taken down by a single blast from his undersized rival, and then alerted the Decepticon forces on the planet to the Autobots' escape. It did little good, as the heroes were able to evade capture, find the hypno-chip control, free the slaves and blast Cybertron out of orbit.{{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 3}}

Megatron was briefly thought destroyed by the explosion that pushed Cybertron out of orbit, by the Decepticon leader soon returned to Earth, where Soundwave immediately informed him of Starscream's latest play for leadership. {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (episode)|Countdown to Extinction}} Soundwave later accompanied Megatron and [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]] to [[Bali]], where they met the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticons]]. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}} Later still, when Megatron challenged Optimus Prime to a one-on-one duel, Soundwave and the other Decepticons contributed their [[power chip rectifier]]s to a machine built by the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]] that would transfer all their powers into Megatron, so that he could win the fight with ease. While Megatron never used Soundwave's powers in the duel,<ref>In the finished episode, that is. A scene deleted from "Heavy Metal War" saw Megatron use Soundwave's mind-reading abilities to deduce Prime's next attack move.</ref> he still claimed victory, but when his breach of the rules was revealed, he, Soundwave and all the Decepticons were sent tumbling into a river of lava by the fighting-mad Autobots.{{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

As 1985 rolled in, Soundwave participated in a Decepticon attack on an Air Force base, {{storylink|Autobot Spike}} and helped in the construction of the [[Solar Needle]] in the jungles of South America. {{storylink|Changing Gears}} When Megatron sought to conquer [[New York City]], Soundwave, Rumble and [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] battled a group of Autobots in Central Park, and Soundwave was later put in charge of the weapons systems of the so-called "[[New Cybertron]]" that New York was being turned into. That control was soon lost, unfortunately, when a stray blast from an irate Megatron destroyed Soundwave's console. {{storylink|City of Steel}}

Soundwave and his cassettes were next sent on a distraction mission, keeping the Autobots occupied while Megatron and Starscream snuck inside their base and sabotaged their [[recharging chamber]]s with a [[personality destabilizer]], narrowly avoiding another pounding from Brawn in the process. {{storylink|Attack of the Autobots}} After helping to steal [[electro-cell]]s {{storylink|Traitor}} and the Autobots' new [[Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer|Immobilizer]] invention, {{storylink|The Immobilizer}} Soundwave was appointed to guard the captive Autobots after Megatron succeeded in trapping them in vehicle mode with the [[Transfixatron]]. The communications officer put his skills to work disabling the Autobots' communicators, but neglected to disable [[Hound (G1)|Hound]]'s hologram projector, which the Autobot was able to use to summon the small number of his comrades who had not been affected by the Transfixatron. [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] and Ratchet developed a grenade to undo the device's effects, and together, Spike and [[Chip Chase]] outran Soundwave and Ravage to detonate it and restore the Autobots. {{storylink|The Autobot Run}}

When Laserbeak and [[Buzzsaw (G1)|Buzzsaw]] stumbled upon the subaquatic city of [[Sub-Atlantica]], Soundwave immediately summoned Megatron to view their findings. Megatron and the Decepticons set out for the city at once, and forged an alliance with its leader, the boastful telepathic [[Nergill|King Nergill]], in order to conquer [[Washington, D.C.]] Starscream, however, did not trust the fish-man, and had Soundwave put his own telepathic powers to use to decrypt the scrambled messages Nergill repeatedly gave to his underlings. Soundwave discovered that Nergill was planning to betray the Decepticons, leading to the breakdown of their alliance. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}}

Soundwave and Megatron used their [[size changing|diminutive]] alternate modes to infiltrate [[Quantum Laboratories]] as part of a plan to take over the computer [[TORQ III]]. {{storylink|Day of the Machines}} Later, Soundwave helped steal the human-made robot ninja [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]] (finally getting one over on Brawn in the process by collapsing a balcony out from under him), and aided [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]] in reprogramming the femme-bot to serve the Decepticons.{{storylink|Enter the Nightbird}}

When the Decepticons discovered strange energy emanations coming from a crevice, Soundwave dispatched the [[Autoscout]] to investigate, discovering the crevice was filled with [[Korlonium crystal]]s. Megatron schemed to create a [[Optimus Prime clone|clone of Optimus Prime]] as part of a plan to harness the crystals' power, and while the plan failed, the clone was at least impressive enough to completely fool Soundwave, and he was in on it! {{storylink|A Prime Problem}} Subsequently, Soundwave took part in the Decepticons' plan to drill to the Earth's core, {{storylink|The Core}} and was then made a mind-controlled pawn of the Insecticons, who used him to download data from the human military defense computer at [[Iron Mountain]]. Megatron and Optimus Prime were forced to team up to stop the Insecticons and destroy the [[cerebro-shell]] controlling Soundwave, erasing the data he had gathered in the process. {{storylink|The Insecticon Syndrome}}

While spying on Autobot Headquarters, Soundwave learned of the existence of the mysterious prehistoric [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], and sent Laserbeak to follow the Dinobots as they travelled there. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} Soundwave proceeded to join the Decepticons in raiding the island's energy sources, before the Autobots, Dinobots and the island's native [[dinosaur]]s saw them off. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

Using his alternate mode to infiltrate a military testing site, Soundwave and his cassettes made a hard-fought but ultimately failed attempt to steal the Autobots' new [[Negavator]] weapon. {{storylink|Auto Berserk}} Later, when human archaeologists uncovered the wreckage of the Decepticons' old space cruiser in South America, Soundwave alerted Megatron to the news report about their findings, then accompanied him to the wreckage, where they removed the ship's power source, the [[Heart of Cybertron]]. Celebrating the new power that the Heart bestowed upon Megatron, Soundwave joined his fellow Decepticons in over-energizing on energon, leaving him too inebriated to do much of anything.{{storylink|Microbots}}

When Megatron framed the Autobots for energy theft and had them exiled from Earth, Soundwave took part in the Decepticons' pretense of being heroes. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Soundwave was quite popular among the humans: a young child was heard cheering for him by name, and when he and his cassettes attended a disco, he acquired many female admirers. After Megatron revealed his deception, however, Soundwave was made the slave-master of the work camp that [[Central City (Earth)|Central City]] was turned into. Thankfully, the Autobots soon returned to Earth to clear their names and rout the Decepticons. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2}}

In one of his most impressible displays of sneakitude, Soundwave was able to position himself, in tape player mode, ''inside'' Ironhide's vehicle mode, ''right next'' to [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]], and spy on the test run of the [[Ultra Plane]], with neither Autobot noticing until he deployed Ravage. While Blaster wrestled with Ravage, Soundwave escaped to report to Megatron, after which he and Starscream joined their leader in attacking the lab containing the blueprints for the plane. The Autobots saw them off, but during their flight away, the Decepticons' systems began to malfunction as a result of [[cybertonium]] degradation. Soundwave's cassettes began ejecting without his command, and his flight powers gave out, sending him crashing to the ground. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}} Once repaired with fresh cybertonium from Cybertron, Soundwave joined the Decepticons on a mission to [[United Kingdom|Great Britain]]. {{storylink|A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court}}

Soundwave was among the Decepticons who were granted invincible [[electrum]] coating by the "Golden Lagoon". With their new power, the Decepticons captured [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]] and [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], but when Starscream attempted to have the two Autobots fight each other for the villains' amusement, Soundwave immediately ran off and tattled on him to Megatron. {{storylink|The Golden Lagoon}}

Following the Decepticons' alliance with the [[Geddis brothers]], {{storylink|Make Tracks}} Soundwave joined in the Decepticon attempt to create a space bridge in a baseball stadium, where he wickedly delighted in playing catch with one of the players (literally!). The Autobots soon arrived, and another brawl between Soundwave and Brawn erupted, ending when the small Autobot threw Soundwave into the space bridge. When a stray blast then activated the bridge, Soundwave and a small group of Autobots and Decepticons were inadvertently hurled to a world of alien giants. After being menaced by the huge cat [[Nitro]] and trapped in a toybox by Nitro's owner [[Aron]], Soundwave was taken with the other Transformers to the planet's authorities for study and dissection. Ravage succeeded in freeing them, and the Decepticons all escaped back to Earth through a mock space bridge Perceptor created out of a telescope. {{storylink|Child's Play (episode)|Child's Play}} Upon his return, Soundwave was caught up in the menace of the [[Morphobot]]s, {{storylink|Quest for Survival}} analyzed the energy of an alien asteroid, {{storylink|The Secret of Omega Supreme}} and helped operate the Decepticons' new [[energy magnet]]. {{storylink|Kremzeek!}}

After joining Megatron on a mission to the planet of the [[Tlalakan]]s, {{storylink|Sea Change}} Soundwave embarked on one of his most notable misadventures when, under the command of Starscream, he set about brainwashing humans with ultrasonic vibrations inside the Decepticon-built nightclub [[Dancitron]] in New York City. This led to his first major confrontation with his Autobot communications officer counterpart, Blaster, with whom he engaged in a sonic duel. Soundwave had the upper hand in the violent jam session, until Blaster used the club's sound system to magnify his own sonic attacks and win the fight. {{storylink|Auto-Bop}}

When the Decepticons captured [[Hybrid Technologies]] heiress [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz]], Soundwave tried to use the [[psycho-probe]] to read her mind, but her innate ability to jinx machines made it a challenge, and eventually led to Soundwave and Rumble being electrocuted. When [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] subsequently caused the Decepticons' new sub-orbital base to crash, it fell to Soundwave to inform Megatron that the base didn't have any forcefields. On a mission to recover some incriminating footage taken by a movie studio of their activities, Soundwave showed up Starscream by pointing out that while the air commander had recovered the film reel, he had not destroyed the negative. Soundwave then helped Megatron track the negative down, but they were tricked into thinking it was destroyed by [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]]. {{storylink|Hoist Goes Hollywood}} Soon after, Soundwave accompanied Megatron to Cybertron to give life to his new [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticon]]s, helping him locate the [[Key to Vector Sigma|key]] to [[Vector Sigma]] and unlocking the door to the mega-computer's chamber. {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1}} Upon their return to Earth with the now-living Stuncticons, Soundwave aided Megatron in analyzing the key to discover what other powers it possessed. By happenstance, its power to de-energize matter and turn it into metal was only discovered when Soundwave tripped and dropped it. {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2}}

Soundwave soon returned to Cybertron to take part in Megatron's plan to trap the newest addition to the Autobot ranks, the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbot]]s, in the distant past, {{storylink|War Dawn}} then went back to Earth and used his scanning powers to help Megatron locate the [[Pearl of Bahoudin]]. {{storylink|Trans-Europe Express}} Soundwave later had Laserbeak monitor the [[Cosmic Rust (disease)|Cosmic Rust]] infection spreading through the Autobot ranks, {{storylink|Cosmic Rust (episode)|Cosmic Rust}}, and had the cassette remove Starscream from Decepticon Headquarters after Megatron finally banished the perennial traitor from the Decepticon ranks. When Starscream returned with his own army, the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]], Soundwave was almost able to shoot the traitor in the back until [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]] caused his shot to go wild. Soundwave tried to summon the Stunticons to help, and while they initially rebuffed him, they eventually arrived to tip the scales in Megatron's favor. {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}}

Suspecting the Autobots had tampered with Megatron's new ruby laser cannon, Soundwave advised his leader to abandon the weapon, but Megatron was caught up in a battle-frenzy and ignored him. Predictably, the weapon promptly exploded. {{storylink|Masquerade}} For his final recorded adventure in the 20th century, Soundwave invented a device to control the flow of Earth's tides. Before the Decepticons could use it, however, it was necessary to blast the moon out of orbit to remove its controlling influence, so they developed an [[orbit disruptor cannon]] to do the job. Unfortunately, the cannon would only be operated by [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]], and all the Combaticons save Swindle had been destroyed, so Soundwave installed a bomb in Swindle's head to give him the incentive to gather up their parts and rebuild them. Bruticus was restored, and Soundwave participated in the Decepticon attack upon Autobot Headquarters that served as a test run for the disruptor cannon, but the complex plot was foiled when three college students used [[B.O.T. Over the course of the following twenty years, the Decepticons withdrew from Earth and focused all their efforts on conquering Cybertron entirely. By the year 2005, they had accomplished this goal, and the Autobots were consigned to their new "[[Autobot City]]" on Earth, and to bases on two of Cybertron's moon. Thanks to Laserbeak and Soundwave, Megatron learned of an upcoming Autobot strike against Cybertron, and resolved to cripple their war effort by destroying Autobot City. During [[Battle of Autobot City|the subsequent battle]], Soundwave was instructed to jam a distress call to Optimus Prime from Blaster, so he sent Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy and [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] to dismantle the communications array being used to broadcast it. Blaster's own team of cassettes fended Soundwave's off, and the call made it through, summoning Optimus Prime and a support team to aid the stricken city. A fateful final battle between Prime and Megatron ensued, which ended with Prime's dead and Megatron mortally wounded. As the other Decepticons beat a hasty retreat, Soundwave demonstrated his loyalty to his leader by recovering his damaged body and carrying him aboard [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], but when it became necessary to jettison excess weight so that the Decepticons could safely make it back to Cybertron, Soundwave made no move to stop Starscream from setting Megatron adrift in space. In fact, with Megatron gone, Soundwave himself made a bid for leadership, declaring himself a superior choice to the Constructicons and deploying his cassettes to fight for his honor. Starscream ultimately emerged victorious in the fight for leadership, but during his coronation ceremony, Megatron returned, having been recreated by the giant transforming god-planet [[Unicron]] into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. Galvatron promptly killed Starscream, and Soundwave started cheering for his returned leader.

In 2006, Soundwave went with Galvatron, Cyclonus, [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] and the [[Sweep]]s to search for [[isodrite]] in an asteroid belt. Soundwave dispatched Ratbat to search for the mineral, only for the cassette to discover that the Autobots were already mining it. {{storylink|Webworld}} Soon after, Soundwave accompanied Galvatron to the planet [[Eurythma]] to investigate a mysterious sonic weapon. They discovered that sound and music were the way of life on the planet, and Soundwave was entranced by the planet's perfect melodies, specifically the destructive [[harmony]] weapon, which was shared by three Eurythmans. One by one, Soundwave coerced from them each piece of the harmony, recording and combing them with the intention of turning the musical maelstrom upon Autobot City. He was defeated, however, when the Eurythmans countered the harmony with [[anti-sound]], and Blaster erased his recordings. {{storylink|Carnage in C-Minor}}

In the 1990s, continued Autobot/human interaction led to a formal alliance being forged between the heroic robots and the American government and the construction of an interstellar teleport system called "[[Warp Gate|The Trigger]]". Naturally, the Trigger space station was a prime target for the Decepticons, and Soundwave was instrumental in taking over the device, as he hacked into its systems and placed it under Decepticon control. Unfortunately for the Decepticons, the sole surviving member of the Trigger's crew, [[Makoto (Stargate Battles)|Makoto]], activated the system and blasted them into space before they could take control of it, and the Autobots soon arrived to send the Decepticons packing.{{storylink|First Contact}}

When the droid ran amok during the test and tried to kill Optimus Prime, the amused Megatron thought Soundwave was responsible for hacking the robot's systems, but Soundwave denied it. {{storylink|Divided Views}} In truth, the drone had been possessed by the time-displaced ghost of Starscream from the future, and he was not yet through making mischief in the past. Starscream's ghost teamed up with his present day counterpart, and together, the two Starscreams took control of the repaired Trigger and possessed it, transforming it into a giant, twisted robot form. Soundwave was among the massive armada of Decepticons and Autobots who battled the giant Starscream-thing, which was ultimately defeated when Prime and Megatron combined their power to destroy the traitor's new body. The Decepticons went off the radar for the year that followed Optimus Prime's resurrection, but in 2011, they returned in full force. When Vector Sigma began to destabilize as a consequence of Optimus Prime releasing the energy of the Matrix, Galvatron led the Decepticons' newest troops, the [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmasters]], in an attack on Cybertron in an attempt to secure the computer and restore a Decepticon power balance to the planet. To prevent Autobot reinforcements from Earth reaching Cybertron, Soundwave and a legion of other Decepticons under the command of the faction's new Earth commander, [[Sixshot]], kept the Autobots on the planet busy in a large battle. {{storylink|Four Warriors Come out of the Sky}} In an attempt to learn the Autobots' plan of action, Soundwave and his cassettes infiltrated Autobot City, and although they were discovered by Blaster and his own cassettes, they were able to escape with the knowledge that the Matrix was hidden somewhere on Earth, and that the Autobots were preparing to search for it. Blaster and [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] subsequently embarked on a search mission to the [[Arctic]], where Soundwave and his cassettes attacked them. Blaster covered Hot Rod's escape, and he and Soundwave engaged in a one-on-one battle, with shattered chests and severed limbs aplenty. It momentarily appeared that Soundwave had won the battle when Blaster collapsed, but seconds later, the fatal damage Blaster had inflicted upon him made itself apparent, as Soundwave's body exploded. His cassettes scooped up as much of his remains as they could and beat a retreat, but Soundwave was triumphant in death, as Blaster too died seconds later. {{storylink|The Mystery of Planet Master}}

Soundwave's remains were brought back to Chaar by his cassettes, where the Decepticon Headmaster leader [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] was able to use the super-science of planet [[Master (planet)|Master]] to restore him to life. Reborn in a new black body, Soundwave was rechristened '''Soundblaster''', and following a reunion with his delighted cassettes, immediately went straight back to working for the Decepticon cause. Soundblaster was, in fact, instrumental to the Decepticons' newest plan, as he used his broadcasting powers to send signals from a sonic control device implanted in his chest to direct the actions of the villains' newest weapon, the [[Madmachine]], in another attack on Cybertron. As coincidence would have it, Autobot Headmaster leader [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress]] had also used the science of Master to restore Blaster to life as "Twincast", and the two rivals clashed for the first time in their new lives when the Autobot destroyed Soundblaster's sonic control and foiled the Decepticons' plot. {{storylink|The Great Cassette Operation}}

Acting on Soundblaster's information, Galvatron staged a massive attack on Cybertron, {{storylink|Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 1}} but Scorponok plotted treachery, planting a bomb in Vector Sigma's chamber in order to destroy the alloy, rather than let Galvatron gain its power. When Galvatron discovered this, Soundblaster attempted to stop him from going to Vector Sigma's chamber, but Galvatron ignored him, and paid for his hubris when the bomb detonated in his face, destroying the cybertonuron and reducing Cybertron to a burnt out husk. {{storylink|Cybertron Is in Grave Danger, Part 2}}

With Galvatron having disappeared in the destruction of Cybertron, Soundblaster met with the other senior Decepticons to discuss what should be done next. During their meeting, the shadowed figure of Galvatron appeared in the room, but Soundblaster quickly analyzed the newcomer's voice pattern, and realized it was not Galvatron, but Scorponok engaging in a bout of gallows humor. Shedding his disguise, Scorponok claimed that Galvatron was still alive, and that while he could not reveal where he was, he had commanded Scorponok to lead in his absence. None of the Decepticons were entirely convinced (in truth, it was a bold-faced lie), but Soundblaster, in need of a leader to follow, chose to accept it as truth, and followed Scorponok's command to send Ratbat to spy on the Autobot/human launch of the [[Solar 1]] satellite. {{storylink|The Shadow Emperor, Scorponok}} Soon after, when Scorponok began scheming to keep the Autobots occupied on Earth with various threads, Soundblaster and his cassettes kept an eye on the Autobots' movements and were able to inform their leader that his plans were working. {{storylink|The Dormant Volcano Mysteriously Erupts}}{{storylink|Head On!! Following Scorponok's instructions, Soundwave directed the planting of [[plasma energy]] bombs beneath the surface of [[Mars (planet)|Mars]], in order to destroy the planet and harvest even more of the energy. {{storylink|Explosion on Mars!! Maximus Is in Danger}} At Scorponok's command, Soundblaster then recalled all available Decepticons to Chaar, where they all witnessed their leader's dramatic unveiling of his gigantic new Transtector. With this powerful new body, Scorponok kept the Autobots occupied while Soundblaster himself pressed the fateful button that detonated the plasma bombs and destroyed Mars. {{storylink|Explosion on Mars!! Soundblaster and his cassettes did not take kindly to the arrival of Scorponok's new intelligence officer, [[Punch (G1)|Counterpunch]], who irked Soundblaster with his remarkable ability to dig up information that Soundblaster couldn't. Of course, Soundblaster had no idea that Counterpunch was able to do this because he was really the Autobot spy, Punch, and so he and his cassettes set out to prove themselves by going to Earth to see what Autobots secrets they could unearth. Unable to find any information, Soundblaster was moping around the Decepticon Earth base when a story suddenly dropped itself right into his lap: a glowing UFO descended from the sky and abducted Sixshot right before his eyes! Soundblaster attempted to report his findings to Scorponok during a battle with the Autobots on Earth's moon, but there and then, the UFO reappeared, and its owner was revealed to be Galvatron, who had survived his appeared destruction and retook leadership of the Decepticons. {{storylink|Return of the Immortal Emperor}}

Soundblaster and the Decepticon Headmasters were manning the scanners at the Decepticon base on Chaar when the [[Horrorcon]]s arrived to join up with Galvatron's forces. {{storylink|Daniel Faces His Biggest Crisis Ever!!}} Soon after, Soundblaster joined the Decepticons on a series of interplanetary energy raids, helping to scan the spaceways and communications channels to keep his leader appraised of Autobot and alien activity as they went from planet [[Susei]] {{storylink|Fight to the Death on Susei!!}} to [[Twin Star]] {{storylink|Battle for Defense of the False Planet}} to [[Daros]]. {{storylink|Find MegaZarak's Weak Spot!!}} The Decepticons' quest eventually brought them to [[Pirate Planet]], where they were stymied in their pursuit of the planet's fabled energy by their inability to enter the pyramid that held it. Soundblaster observed [[Highbrow (G1)|Highbrow]] and [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]] departing for the field of debris near the planet, and, suspecting they knew something he didn't, followed them. Soundblaster proceeded to ambush the two heroes and demand they share their information, but Daniel was able to get the drop on the Decepticon with his video game light gun, which Highbrow had amped up into a real weapon. {{storylink|Mystery of the Space Pirate Ship}}

When the Decepticons returned to Earth, Sixshot proceeded to lead a series of major attacks upon the Autobot forces. Soundblaster reported to Galvatron on the departure of Fortress Maximus from Athenia, and suggested sending Scorponok to keep him busy. Galvatron was wary, knowing Scorponok had his own agenda, but Soundblaster vowed to follow him and keep an eye on him, and Galvatron agreed. However, Soundblaster was surprisingly lax in his duty, as Scorponok didn't bother engaging Fortress, and Soundblaster didn't report this at all! {{storylink|Ultra Magnus Dies!!}}

Following Galvatron's death at the hands of the Headmasters and Scorponok's subsequent re-assumption of Decepticon leadership, Soundblaster was among the Decepticons who travelled with his new leader to the planet [[Master (planet)|Master]]. {{storylink|Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 2)}} When the Autobots followed them there, Soundblaster boldly infiltrated their spaceship, the ''Maximus'', and spied on them with Ratbat. When he was discovered, however, he leapt overboard and flew back to the surface of Master, inadvertently leading the Autobot [[Targetmaster]]s to the Decepticons' hidden subterranean base. {{storylink|The Zarak Shield Turns the Tide}} Soundblaster was able to repay them in kind after a later battle, though, when he stealthily followed the retreating Targetmasters and discovered that the Autobots had started working with the young warriors of Master. {{storylink|Operation: Destroy the Decepticons}}

After Scorponok successfully completed construction of his new [[Zarak Shield]] weapon, the Decepticons headed back to Earth, but as they were passing through the asteroid belt, Soundblaster noticed a malfunction in their propulsion system that required them to set down for repairs. While they were resting there, Soundblaster detected the approach of an object, which turned out to be Sixshot, who had become separated from the Decepticons on an earlier leg of their journey. {{storylink|Duel on the Asteroid}}

Finally, once the Decepticons returned to Earth, Scorponok began raising "Death Towers" of [[crysmag metal]] at strategic points around the Earth, intending to use them to tear the planet apart. While on patrol in the Alps, Soundblaster observed the passage of the Autobots' battleship, and radioed the Decepticons in Egypt to let them know of their enemies' approach. Subsequently, with all the Death Towers in place, Soundblaster participated in the climactic battle between the Autobot and Decepticons armies at the South Pole, which ended when Fortress Maximus destroyed Scorponok's Transtector and saved the planet. {{storylink|The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 2)}}

After their defeat at the North Pole, the Decepticons were preparing to retreat from Earth entirely when Scorponok instructed Soundblaster to remain on the planet in secret to act as a spy for the Decepticons. Soundblaster proved that he wasn't up to the challenge by making his presence and intentions known almost instantly when he kicked [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]] square in the face and took the [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Witwicky]] family hostage. Daniel finally snapped and beat the living crap out of the two Cassette dinosaurs, leaving Soundblaster open to Chromedome's poorly named "Master-Chrome Hurricane Throw to the End of Hell!" Chromedome chucked Soundblaster over the horizon, and when he recovered from his fall, he found Sixshot staring down at him. Demanding to know what Sixshot wanted, Soundblaster was informed that the six-changer was no longer affiliated with the Decepticons, and wanted to travel from planet to planet, learning new transformations. One day, Sixshot told him, he wanted to learn how to transform into a human! Following the exile of the [[Quintesson]]s from [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], the two races of robots that they had created, the [[Autobot]]s and the [[Decepticon]]s, went to war with each other. Although physically weaker, the Autobots claimed victory thanks to their development of a new ability: the art of [[transformation|transforming]]. The Autobots' victory began the [[Golden Age]] of Cybertron, but all was not well within this seeming paradise. After many centuries of Autobot rule, the Decepticons developed transformation as well, along with new robot-mode flight powers, leading to the creation of Megatron. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4}}

Megatron quickly gathered a small group of like-minded warriors together beneath him, and he began his mission to restore the Decepticons to glory and overthrow the Autobots. However, Pax soon learned the error of his ways when Megatron approached him about the possibility of using one of the local warehouses for storage, only to turn on Pax once he had gained access to the energy stored within the facility. Megatron fatally injured Orion in a scuffle and left the young robot to die while he set about pillaging and battling the [[guardian robot]]s who arrived to quash his uprising. Unbeknownst to Megatron, thanks to the actions of the time-displaced [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]], Orion was rebuilt by [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]] into a new configuration that could truly stand up to Megatron's power—now, he was [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]]. Under Megatron's leadership, the Decepticons conquered a large portion of Cybertron, but the war drained the planet of most of its energy. Learning that the Autobots were planning a space voyage to search for new worlds and new sources of power, Megatron appointed [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] guardian of Cybertron in his absence while he and his elite forces–including the treacherous [[Starscream (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Starscream]], who considered Megatron a relic and sought leadership of the Decepticons for himself, and Megatron's most loyal subordinate, [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]]—boarded a [[Nemesis (G1)|space cruiser]] to pursue the Autobots' own [[Ark (G1)|craft]]. After navigating a treacherous meteor shower, the Decepticons attacked and boarded the Autobot craft, but during the battle that ensued, the ship was caught in the g-forces of the nearby planet [[Earth]] and crashed there, knocking all its occupants offline.

Four million years later, in 1984, the eruption of the volcano into which the ship had crashed jarred the ship's computer, [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]], back online. The computer restored the Decepticon [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] to life, and he immediately dragged Megatron into Teletraan's reconfiguration beam. Within moments, the Decepticon leader was restored, now outfitted with an Earthly [[alternate mode]] in the form of a Walther P.38 pistol, and he quickly set about reviving the rest of his troops. Realizing that they were on a planet far from Cybertron, Megatron immediately made plans to gather energy from Earth's resources and build a new space cruiser so they could return home...and perhaps he would have succeeded in this goal, if the Autobots had not been there to stop him. Unfortunately, Starscream proved petty enough to fire a few parting shots at the buried Autobot spacecraft as the Decepticons were leaving, causing a tremor that jostled Optimus Prime's body into the path of Teletraan I's beam. Thus, Optimus Prime was revived and the rest of the Autobots soon followed, and the war continued on Earth.

For their first strike, Megatron led the Decepticons to an offshore oil rig. The Autobots followed, and Prime and Megatron found themselves in battle once again, but Megatron soon broke off the fight and covered his escape by collapsing the rig with a blast from his cannon. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}} Next, Megatron chose to attack [[Sherman Dam]], atop which he battled Optimus Prime with his [[energon mace]]. After pillaging another clutch of energy from the [[Ruby Crystal Mines of Burma]], Megatron made preparations to attack a rocket base to acquire the last of the energy needed. Starscream took the opportunity to grouse about his leadership once more, and in a rather foolish move, attempted to shoot Megatron in the back. Responding to Soundwave's shout of warning, Megatron blocked the beam with a force field and returned fire, bringing Starscream to his knees. The following morning, the Decepticons attacked a rocket base, successfully foiling an attempt by the Autobots to dupe them with a holographic illusion, and obtained the required energy. The Autobots launched one final attack on the Decepticons before the villains could escape, during which Megatron faced the firepower of Prime's [[Combat Deck]], but ultimately, the Decepticons made it to their cruiser and blasted off. Once airborne, Starscream challenged Megatron for leadership once again, and Megatron was fully prepared to take on the traitor...until the Autobot stowaway [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] used the fight as a distraction to sabotage the ship and send it crashing back to Earth, where it submerged itself in the ocean. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 3}}

Although the Autobots believed the Decepticons deceased, in reality, Megatron and his forces had survived, and in the intervening months, they repurposed the hulk of their spaceship as a sub-oceanic [[Decepticon Headquarters|headquarters]]. Megatron re-established contact with Shockwave on Cybertron, arranging for the joint construction of a new intergalactic transport system called a "[[space bridge]]". After revealing his continued existence to the Autobots in an attack on a solar power plant, Megatron captured Spike Witwicky for use in the first test of the space bridge and reprogrammed Spike's Autobot friend [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], causing the little Autobot to lure his comrades into an ambush. Despite his carefully-laid plans, everything backfired for Megatron when the Autobots disrupted the test and he was inadvertently sucked through the space bridge. {{storylink|Transport to Oblivion}}

While a lesser being might have been destroyed by the voyage, Megatron survived and re-materialized on Cybertron. He quickly had Shockwave send him back to Earth, where he led the Decepticons in stealing an [[antimatter]] formula from the scientist [[Doctor Alcazar]] and his student, [[Chip Chase]]. Using the formula, Megatron created antimatter cubes that he used to power himself, transforming his pistol mode into a devastating "antimatter gun". Regrettably, the plan was short-lived: During the ensuing battle, the antimatter reached ignition temperature, and he was forced to dispose of it and flee. {{storylink|Roll for It}}

When Optimus Prime was badly wounded in a battle with the Decepticon jets, a group of Autobots travelled to Cybertron to secure a replacement part to save him, prompting Megatron to order the [[Rainmaker]]s into battle to stop them with [[acid rain]]. Thinking this tactic a success, Megatron launched a major attack on [[Ark (G1)|Autobot Headquarters]], but the Autobots returned from Cybertron in time to repair Prime, who thrashed Megatron soundly in one-on-one combat. {{storylink|Divide and Conquer}}

Megatron's scheme to drain heat energy from Earth's core was foiled by the Decepticon-turned-Autobot [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]], {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}}, after which his attack on the [[Great Falls]] hydroelectric power plant was squashed by the powerful, newly created [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]. {{storylink|S.O.S. Dinobots}} His attempt to use the [[Crystal of Power]] as a weapon met with similar success, {{storylink|Fire on the Mountain}} so Megatron turned his attentions back to the Dinobots, using his charisma to confuse their simple minds and turn them against the Autobots. While the Dinobots were busy battling Optimus Prime, Megatron and the Decepticons stole an [[Meteorini Chipperoni|unstable meteorite]] and began draining its energy, but the meteor soon exploded, denying Megatron another success. {{storylink|War of the Dinobots}}

Megatron's next plan was his grandest yet, as he allied himself with the human scientist [[Doctor Arkeville]] for his mind-controlling [[hypno-chip]]s and constructed a colossal space bridge design to teleport Cybertron itself into Earth's orbit. Prime engaged Megatron in battle just before the Decepticon leader could activate the final pylon of the space bridge, but victory in this battle was Megatron's, as he revealed his scheme to Prime, forcing Optimus to activate the pylon himself or cause Cybertron's destruction. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 1}} Megatron's forces and mind-controlled human slaves set about gathering the energy generated by the catastrophic forces unleashed by Cybertron's arrival, {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} until eventually, a huge transport full of energy cubes was ready. As Megatron personally flew the ship to Cybertron, but the Autobots opened fire on it, detonating the energon cubes and causing an explosion large enough to force Cybertron out of orbit, saving Earth. Megatron proved his preternatural durability yet again by surviving the blast, {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 3}} and he quickly returned to Earth, only to discover that Starscream and Doctor Arkeville had formed an alliance.

To stop Starscream's plan to use an [[Exponential Generator]] to destroy the Earth, Megatron was forced to team up with Optimus Prime, transforming into pistol mode so that Prime could use him to fire the generator into space. When the generator exploded, it knocked the passing Starscream out the sky, and he crashed right at the vengeful Megatron's feet. {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (episode)|Countdown to Extinction}}

Whatever revenge Megatron reaped upon Starscream, it was enough to put the Air Commander out of commission for the Decepticons' next mission to [[Bali]], where Megatron formed a partnership with a trio of Decepticon "[[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticons]]" that had been living there. When an Autobot attack foiled their attempt to steal energy from an oil tanker, however, Megatron cut his losses and ordered the Decepticons to retreat with what energon cubes they had acquired, earning him the Insecticons' emnity. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}}

After the Decepticons were joined on Earth by the Constructicons, Megatron put the builders' skills to use constructing a device that would transfer the other Decepticons' powers into him. With these additional abilities in place, Megatron challenged Optimus Prime to a one-on-one duel according to Cybertronian law, in which the loser would be exiled from Earth forever. The law, however, dictated that combatants had to fight without additional reinforcement, so to hide the nature of his new powers, Megatron dispatched the Constructicons to destroy Teletraan I, so that the computer would be unable to scan him and realise his broach of the rules. Using the powers of his Decepticons, Megatron easily defeated Optimus Prime, but the Constructicons' were foiled in their mission by the Dinobots, and Megatron's deception stood revealed. Faced with a furious Optimus Prime, Megatron was hurled into a river of lava, but as the Autobots departed, his charred form bobbed to the surface, and he vowed the Decepticons would rise again. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

During a raid on an Air Force rocket base in 1985, Megatron covered the Decepticons' retreat by opening fire on Bumblebee and Spike, badly wounding the young human. While his body was being operated upon, Spike's mind was transferred into the Frankenstein-like body of "[[Autobot X]]", and Megatron was able to exploit the youth's resulting addled state and turn him against the Autobots, even allowing Spike to wield him in pistol mode. Unfortunately for Megatron, Spike got a hold of himself and turned Megatron's power on the other Decepticons, winning the day. {{storylink|Autobot Spike}}

The device turned the Autobots into rampaging brutes, and while they were busy causing destruction, Megatron led the Decepticons in hijacking a solar satellite, only to be foiled at the last second when the Autobots were restored to their right minds. {{storylink|Attack of the Autobots}}

Wild and wonderful technology formed the basis of Megatron's next few schemes, as he formed another unstable alliance with the Insecticons to appropriate human-made [[electro-cell]]s, {{storylink|Traitor}} attempted to steal Wheeljack's new paralyzing [[Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer|Immobilizer]] weapon, {{storylink|The Immobilizer}} and had the Constructicons build the [[Transfixatron]], a device which froze the Autobots in their vehicle modes. {{storylink|The Autobot Run}} When these plans met with failure, Megatron teamed up with King [[Nergill]] of the undersea fish-race of [[Sub-Atlantica]] and tried to conquer [[Washington, D.C.]] Megatron felt right at home sitting in a "throne" made from the [[Abraham Lincoln|Lincoln Memorial]], but the plan fell apart when the insane Nergill betrayed Megatron. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}}

Despite the failure of his plan to manipulate the Earth computer [[TORQ III]], {{storylink|Day of the Machines}} Megatron stuck to his guns and tried controlling Earth technology again, stealing the human-made robot ninja [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]] and unleashing it upon the Autobots. Megatron was full of praise for Nightbird, describing "her" as "all he had ever wanted", and dubbed her "hot enough" to replace Starscream if he so chose. Threatened by this prospect, Starscream helped the Autobots defeat Nightbird. Needless to say, Megatron was not pleased. {{storylink|Enter the Nightbird}}

For his next plan, Megatron got very hands-on, creating a perfect [[Optimus Prime clone|clone]] of Optimus Prime that he controlled personally via a special helmet. Despite Megatron's inability to operate Teletraan I or even get the Autobots' names right, Prime's comrades failed to tell the difference between the clone and the genuine article. It was only when Megatron dismissed the safety of Spike during a battle for control of a crevasse of [[korlonium crystal]]s that his trickery was revealed and the clone was destroyed. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}}

Megatron's next run of plans went especially badly for the Decepticon leader. Another attempt to harness the power of the Earth's core nearly destroyed the planet, necessitating a team-up with the Autobots to save the world, {{storylink|The Core}} while another failed alliance with the Insecticons also led to a team-up, as Megatron was forced once again to allow Optimus Prime to wield him in pistol mode, so that he could shoot capsules into the over-energized Insecticons in order to bring them under control. {{storylink|The Insecticon Syndrome}} No alliance resulted from Megatron's attempt to harness the energies of the time-lost [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} but his scheme nearly tore apart the fabric of space and time, until the Dinobots and the island's native dinosaurs stopped him. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

Next, Megatron tried stealing Autobot technology, going after [[Grapple]]'s [[Solar Power Tower]] {{storylink|The Master Builders}} and the [[Negavator]], {{storylink|Auto Berserk}} but failure on both accounts led him to try and rediscover a piece of lost technology, rather than steal a new one. Venturing into the jungles of South America, Megatron and the Decepticons uncovered the ruins of the space cruiser that had brought them to Earth, and Megatron had its power core, the [[Heart of Cybertron]], installed within his body. Now bestowed with incredible energy-blasting powers, Megatron would have destroyed the Autobots, had Bumblebee, [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]] and [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] not shrunk themselves to microscopic size and ventured inside his body to disconnect the Heart of Cybertron. {{storylink|Microbots}}

Seeking to exploit the gullibility of humankind, Megatron entered into a partnership with the human politician [[Shawn Berger]], promising him control of [[Central City (Earth)|Central City]] if he would help Megatron "expose" the Autobots for the villains they truly were. Megatron tricked Berger into believing the Autobots had ransacked an oil field by disguising the Decepticons with costumes, and the tape "proving" the Autobots' evil deeds was unveiled to the public. Found guilty in a court of law, the Autobots were exiled from Earth, and Megatron secretly reprogrammed their ship's navigation computer to send them not back to Cybertron, but into the heart of the Sun. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Megatron played nice for a little while, joining in a parade and a television interview, but it was during the latter that he revealed his deception and announced his intention to conquer the planet. Holding the world to ransom for energy in exchange for clear lines of communication, Megatron was ultimately defeated in a battle with Optimus Prime on the Moon's surface. {{storylink|Blaster Blues}}

Megatron released Kremzeek into the Autobot base so that he could cause havoc, keeping the Autobots occupied while he tested the Decepticons' new [[energy magnet]] off the coast of [[Japan]]. However, Megatron had not anticipated that Kremzeek would follow him to Japan and wind up destroying their operation there. {{storylink|Kremzeek!}}

After a mission to the planet of the [[Tlalakan]]s at the behest of the neurotic Decepticon computer [[Deceptitran]], {{storylink|Sea Change}} Megatron fell victim to betrayal by Starscream, [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]], and was frozen solid in a subterranean chamber by absolute zero degree molecules. As luck would have it, the chaos caused by the trio's attempts to take control of the Decepticons caused a flash flood that destroyed the chamber and freed Megatron, and he took on all comers to retake his leadership position. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}}

Megatron then took a step back from the front lines for a while, delegating Astrotrain and Blitzwing to make contact with the big game hunter [[Lord Chumley]], {{storylink|Prime Target}}, placing Starscream in charge of missions to hypnotise humans with the [[Dancitron]] nightclub {{storylink|Auto-Bop}} and to capture [[Elita One]] on Cybertron, {{storylink|The Search for Alpha Trion}}, and appointing [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]], [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]] and [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] to capture [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz]]. {{storylink|The Girl Who Loved Powerglide}} Megatron got proactive again when a movie studio captured footage of Dirge crash-landing in their back lot while carrying a secret cargo. Starscream's failure to recover the negatives of the footage enraged Megatron to such an extent that he slammed the Air Commander off a wall and tore wires out of his chest, knocking him offline. Megatron was tricked into believing the negative had been destroyed by [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]], but as it turned out, the "secret cargo" was totally worthless anyway! {{storylink|Hoist Goes Hollywood}}

Seeking to challenge the Autobots' rule of the road, Megatron created the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] and brought them to Cybertron so that [[Vector Sigma]] could bring them to life. Stealing the mega-computer's key from [[Alpha Trion (G1)|Alpha Trion]], Megatron succeeded in his goal, {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1}} and upon returning to Earth with the key, discovered that it possessed the additional power to de-energize matter and turn it into metal. Cutting a swathe through the [[Seattle]]-Tacoma area with the key, Megatron sought to transform Earth into a new Cybertron, but he was stopped by the Autobots' newest members, the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]]. {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2}}

Megatron soon sought to dispose of the Aerialbots by sending them back to the dawn of time using the [[Kronosphere]] time machine, but an Autobot attack disrupted the process, and the Aerialbots wound up on Cybertron nine million years in the past. There, they saved Orion Pax from dying at Megatron's hands, making Megatron–who was the reason for the Aerialbots being sent back in time–unwittingly responsible for the creation of his greatest enemy. {{storylink|War Dawn}}

Coercing the aid of [[Abdul Ben Faisal]] and [[Professor Teranova]], Megatron located the weather-controlling [[Pearl of Bahoudin]] and arranged the [[Europa 2000]] so that he could obtain the experimental metal of [[Auggie Cahnay (G1)|Auggie Cahnay]]'s car and use it to contain the pearl's power. An Autobot attack caused Megatron to lose control of the pearl, and he fled the massive storm that resulted. {{storylink|Trans-Europe Express}}

While investigating the planet [[Antilla]], Megatron discovered a new "[[Lightning Bug]]" weapon, but also fell victim to the deadly disease [[Cosmic Rust (disease)|Cosmic Rust]]. Autobot scientist Perceptor was captured and brought to Decepticon Headquarters to diagnose him, and he offered a cure in the form of his newest invention, [[Corrostop]]. With the Decepticons protected by Corrostop, Megatron unleashed Cosmic Rust upon the Autobots, exacerbating its effects with the Lightning Bug. Events culminated at the [[Statue of Liberty]], where the stricken Autobots found the strength to overcome the Decepticons and destroy Megatron's new weapon. {{storylink|Cosmic Rust (episode)|Cosmic Rust}}

After another failed coup by Starscream, Megatron reached the end of his rope and dismissed the traitor from the Decepticon ranks. When news then came in from Shockwave that the [[personality component]]s of the political dissidents known as the "[[Renegade Decepticon]]s" had been freed from imprisonment on Cybertron, Megatron suspected the Autobots were responsible, but he soon learned that Starscream had done the deed and used the components to create an army of his own, the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]]. Megatron could not stand up to the power of the Combaticons' combined form of [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]], and he was forced to hand power over to Starscream...just before [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] blindsided Bruticus and saved Megatron at the last minute. Megatron exiled Starscream and the Combaticons to an asteroid in space, {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}} but this merely made things worse, as the Combaticons towed the asteroid to Cybertron and took over the planet. While supervising an Insecticon rampage on Earth, Megatron received a communication from Starscream informing him that the Combaticons had rewired the space bridge and were using it to hurl the Earth into the Sun. Once again, Megatron and Optimus Prime were forced to join forces to stop the Combaticons, but first, both leaders had to donate some of their own parts to repair the damaged space bridge control panel. After a pitched battle on Cybertron, Bruticus was defeated, and Optimus Prime believed he witnessed Megatron destroying the giant warrior with a blast from his fusion cannon. In truth, the whole scene had been a holographic illusion masterminded by Starscream, who gave Megatron the defeated Bruticus's body. Planning to reprogram the Combaticons to be loyal to him, Megatron welcomed Starscream back into the Decepticon ranks as reward for his efforts. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}}

Megatron's final recorded schemes in the twentieth century were some of his most outlandish yet, as he used armies of drone planes and a fortress in the shape of a [[Giant Purple Griffin]] to pillage the oil fields of the Middle East, {{storylink|Aerial Assault}} created a giant laser out of a ruby, {{storylink|Masquerade}} and planned to blast the [[moon (moon)|Moon]] out of orbit so he could control the tides of the Earth and...flood one single canyon. {{storylink|B.O.T. (episode)|B.O.T.}}

Over the course of the next twenty years, Megatron turned his attention away from Earth and succeeded in conquering the entirety of Cybertron. The Autobots were forced off the planet and founded [[Autobot City]] on Earth, in addition to two staging bases on Cybertron's moons. At some point during this period of time, Megatron was known to have battled Optimus Prime in a laboratory on Earth, during which he hurled a flask of chemicals which exploded, scarring scientist [[Gregory Swofford]]. {{storylink|The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1}}

In the year 2005, Megatron learned of the Autobots' plan to stage a major strike against him, and he responded by hijacking an Autobot shuttle on its way to Earth. After wiping out the occupants of the shuttle, Megatron announced his intention to wipe out the city and cripple the Autobot war effort, then looked down to see the wounded Ironhide crawling towards him. Deeming the action "heroic nonsense", Megatron delivered a point-blank fusion cannon blast to Ironhide's head, killing him.

When the shuttle began its approach to Autobot City, the young Autobot [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] was able to spot the Decepticons aboard from his vantage point on [[Lookout Mountain]] and opened fire, exposing the villains before they were actually able to penetrate Autobot City. Megatron was undeterred, and he initiated a massive siege of the armored fortress. After a night of combat, Devastator successfully breached the city walls, allowing Megatron to enter. Before Megatron could get too deeply into the city, however, Optimus Prime arrived and faced him in a final battle. Megatron fought fiercely, and although deprived of his fusion cannon, he tore into Prime with a laser sword and even hunks of rubble, threatening to rip out the Autobot leader's optics.

Ultimately, Optimus Prime prevailed, bringing Megatron to his knees and standing over him, ion blaster in hand, poised to deliver the killing blow. Spotting a discarded pistol lying nearby, Megatron stalled for time by begging for mercy, crawling ever closer to the weapon, until Hot Rod spotted what he was doing and jumped him. Hot Rod proved a much less formidable opponent for Megatron, even in his weakened state, and he seized the youth, using him as a shield while he grabbed the gun and opened fire on Prime. Prime was felled by the shots, and Megatron tossed Hot Rod aside, striding up to the fallen Prime and preparing to end their war once and for all. With his last ounce of strength, however, Prime caught Megatron off-guard with a double axe-handle blow and sent the Decepticon leader toppling over the edge of the overhang on which they were standing. Crippled by the fall, Megatron was carried to the safety of Astrotrain by Soundwave as the tide of battle turned and the Decepticons retreated. Although Megatron was defeated, he had not failed; the wounds Optimus Prime had suffered were mortal, and he died soon after.

On the journey back to Cybertron, it became necessary for the Decepticons to jettison excess mass in order to return home safely. The wounded Decepticons were voted out and set adrift in space, with Starscream taking great delight in personally jettisoning Megatron, despite Megatron's protestations that he still functioned. Before long, however, Megatron's drifting body was found by the planet-eating [[Unicron]], who offered to rebuild the Decepticon's body if he would destroy the Autobot [[Matrix of Leadership]] for Unicron. Megatron professed that the Matrix had died with Optimus Prime, but Unicron revealed that it had been passed to the Autobots' new leader, [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]]. Testing the waters, Megatron inquired what he would receive for doing Unicron's will, and despite his dubious bargaining posture, Unicron offered to recreate his wounded body and give him new troops. Megatron demanded more but was denied, as Unicron declared that Megatron now belonged to him. This was the final straw for Megatron, who refused to be anyone's servant, so Unicron simply began to consume him. This blow unhinged his gyrocompass stabilizers, which were keeping in check the [[quantum surge]] energy he had been exposed to during his four-million-year slumber, when the [[Beast Wars (event)|Beast Wars]] had been raging on prehistoric Earth. Now unleashed, the quantum energy changed Megatron's body into a powerful black metallic [[Transmetal]] form. When the Decepticons detected magnetic fluctuations emanating from the caves, Megatron dispatched [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]]'s cassettes to investigate, and [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] discovered the facility. Hoping to destroy the fortress before it was completed, Megatron sent Starscream, Skywarp, Thundercracker and the Constructicons to attack the facility, but they were forced back by the Autobots. Incensed at their failure, Megatron ordered the Stunticons into action, then the Combaticons, leading to an all-out combiner brawl. Ultimately, Megatron's plan met with failure, as the Autobot combiners were able to hold off the Decepticons long enough for Scramble City to be completed and transformed into Metroplex. Metroplex dispatched the Decepticons, but Megatron then revealed his trump card: The ocean split, and from its depths rose Trypticon! {{storylink|Scramble City: Mobilization}}

[[Hound (G1)|Hound]], along with the Autobots' human allies, [[Toru]] and [[Jenny (G1)|Jenny]], ventured into Death Valley to investigate, but were captured and forced to watch as Megatron ordered the Stunticons to begin pillaging energy amid the chaos the Omega Whip was causing. Jenny was able to use a [[fusion plate]] to get control of Starscream's motor functions, and she used him to destroy the Omega Whip controls, prompting Megatron to order a withdrawal. Before they could escape, however, the Decepticons were met with the full force of the Autobots, and Megatron unleashed his [[energon mace]] upon Optimus Prime once more. In the 1990s, the formal alliance between the Autobots and the American government led to a joint project to create the "[[Warp Gate|Trigger]]", an interstellar transportation system that almost immediately became a target for Megatron, who knew they could use it to ferry huge quantities of energon back to Cybertron. Exploiting other countries' dissatisfaction with the Autobots' decision to ally solely with America, Megatron forged a clandestine pact with another Western power, which installed one of its people, [[Trov]], as part of the small crew that manned the Trigger space station. Trov granted the Decepticons access to the station, but was promptly killed by a blast from Megatron's fusion cannon, as the Decepticon leader naturally had no intentions of sharing power. Unfortunately for the Decepticons, the one surviving member of the crew, [[Makoto (Stargate Battles)|Makoto]], was able to activate the Trigger and send the Decepticons hurtling towards its portal. At the last moment, Megatron was able to blast the portal and deactivate it, and he was about to kill Makoto in rage when the Autobots arrived to rout the Decepticons. {{storylink|First Contact}}

Megatron was content to wait the six months the humans would take to rebuild the Trigger so that they could make another attempt to take control of it, and he mocked Starscream's impetuous desire to destroy it outright, accusing his subordinate of being unable to grasp the concept of long-term development. {{storylink|Divided Views}} Seeking to prove his competence, Starscream took a leaf out of Megatron's book and arranged an alliance with the [[Prime Minister of Japan]]: the country would provide them with energy in return for a promise of non-aggression. Despite the huge amount of energon cubes that Starscream's plan brought in, Megatron was not impressed, and his reservations toward Starscream's plan only proved correct when the Autobots deduced what was going on and showed up to stop them. Optimus Prime tackled Megatron into the ocean, and they battled on the sea bed with their axe and mace, until Megatron had [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] and [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] trigger an earthquake that caused widespread devastation. Megatron revealed the Prime Minister's role and declared that this was a lesson for Prime not to trust humans, before sending his old foe tumbling into a chasm opened by the quake. {{storylink|Activation}}

Discovering that Starscream had absconded with the energon cubes while he had been battling Prime, Megatron led the Decepticons back to the Trigger, where Starscream had returned. In actuality, Starscream's hand was being guided by the time-displaced ghost of his future self, and using the energon, both present and future Starscream merged with the Trigger to become a monstrous, misshapen robot. The Autobots arrived to protect the Trigger's crew, and a huge space-battle ensued, during which Optimus Prime returned from his apparent demise. To stop Starscream, Megatron was forced to transform into pistol mode and allow Optimus Prime to wield him. Prime channelled the power of the Matrix through Megatron's firing systems, shocking the Decepticon leader with its sheer power, before unleashing the blast that destroyed the Trigger. The Transformers, however, were all caught in the backwash of the explosion and send plummeting back to Earth in uncontrolled re-entry.

Neither Megatron nor any of the other Transformers were seen for several months, but somewhere, in a desert on Earth, Megatron and Prime survived and continued their battle... {{storylink|The Stargate Battles (issue)|The Stargate Battles}}

After the Autobots' Earth-based forces were decimated by a [[Cosmic Rust (disease)|Cosmic Rust]] plague unleashed by [[Swindle (G1)|Swindle]] in 2003, Megatron made his big push to take over Cybertron fully in 2004. The vast majority of the Autobots were occupied battling Megatron's forces on Cybertron, leading to the creation of new "Binaltech" bodies for the injured Autobots on Earth to protect the planet. {{storylink|Story of Binaltech, Chapter 1}}

In the midst of this Binaltech affair, the time-tossed Decepticon [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] attempted to alter history by using the [[Kronosphere]] time-machine. In the middle of a decisive battle between the Autobots and Decepticons, Ravage used the Kronosphere to transport Megatron and the Decepticons through time, altering history so that the Autobots were left to face the looming threat of [[Unicron]] alone. {{storylink|Changing Lanes}} This disruption of the natural order of time proved almost catastrophic, but reality was saved by the appearance of a mysterious entity known only as the "[[Optimus Primal|Protector]]", which restored the timeline as it should have been, but also preserved the altered "BT World" timeline as an alternate universe. {{storylink|Binal Time}}

Megatron then turned his attention to the Sol system and launched an attack on the [[Earth Defense Command]] base on [[Mars (planet)|Mars]]. There, he was faced by [[Nemesis Prime (G1)|Nemesis Prime]], a clone of Optimus Prime created by Doctor Arkeville, who desired to conquer Earth for himself and refused to allow Megatron to go any further. Outraged at the sight of an Earth machine wearing a Decepticon insignia, Megatron attacked.

At the same time, however, the Autobot spy Mirage had been dispatched to Cybertron, where he was instructed to locate and throw a [[large switch]] on which the Autobots had received information. This switch effectively froze every non-Binaltech Transformer throughout the entire universe, including Megatron, still in mid-battle. With his Decepticons now mere cavemen in comparison to these super-evolved Autobots, Megatron embarked on a journey across space and time, allying himself with the Megatrons of numerous other worlds in the multiverse and conducting exhausting research and training in order to perfect a scheme that would grant him power on the level of the Alternity.

Putting his plan into action, Megatron lured the Alternity's natural enemy, the transdimensional time-eating god-beast known as [[Hytherion]], into the parallel world of [[universal stream|Primax 109.0 Beta]] in the year 2009. Watching as the Optimus Primes of the Alternity engaged the creature in battle, Megatron activated his new [[chaotizer]] device, successfully fusing himself with Hytherion and transforming himself into a hyper-dimensional entity of power on the level of the Alternity itself. Disappearing into a higher realm, Megatron revealed he had created [[auto-avatar]]s of his own to interact with the physical world the same way the Alternity had. Taking possession of the "Premium Le Mans Blue" auto-avatar, while one of his fellow Megatrons took control of the "Blade Silver" body, he engaged in battle with Optimus Prime and vowed to conquer the entire multiverse. {{storylink|To Mega Therion}}

Later, Megatron battled another member of the Alternity, [[Nemesis Prime (Universe 2003)|another version of Nemesis Prime]] from elsewhere in the multiverse, on a flame-scorched battlefield. Although still new to higher-dimensional battle, Megatron's attacks were powerful and deadly, as he managed to tear a gash in the moon overhead with his Tesseractal Sword. He mocked Nemesis Prime's turn to the side of good, thinking it had cost him his edge in battle, as the Alternity warrior had been continually missing him with the shots he fired. Unfortunately for Megatron, he soon discovered how wrong he was: Nemsis Prime had actually exploited his unfamiliarity with this new form of combat, and trapped him in a closed time loop, where he was repeatedly struck a single laser blast over and over again, until his Auto-avatar was reduced to scrap. {{storylink|Arch-Nemesis!}}

Continuously foiled at every turn by the Alternity, Megatron began recruiting Decepticons from various universal streams to serve as his agents. He dispatching [[Reflector (G1)#Alternity)|Reflector]] to [[Binaltech#Binaltech Asterisk|Primax 905.0 Beta]] to search for a mysterious tablet that was a gateway to the two-dimensional universe of [[Flatworld]]. As he licked one up and down with his mighty tongue, he was suddenly attacked by [[Sixliner]]. Unimpressed, Super Megatron shrugged off Sixliner with a single blow, informing the runt he was a million years too young to challenge him. A worthy foe soon appeared in the form of Star Convoy, and the two eternal enemies threw down once more. Super Megatron transformed to his "gunjet" mode and proved a powerful enemy, but was tricked by Star Convoy into crashing into the side of an oil tank. However, after human soldiers mistook and murdered one of his messengers and dearest comrades, he adopted a new tank body and began the war anew. During an early battle, Megatron threatened to destroy [[Volt]] and [[Electro]]. Luckily for Volt, [[Strafe (G2)|Strafe]] arrived on the scene just in time to belt Megatron in the jaw. {{storylink|G-2 (pack-in comic)|G-2 #15}} Megatron eventually captured Electro and took him back to Decepticon Headquarters. He attempted to persuade Electro to join him, but Electro politely declined the invitation, as his rescue had just arrived. Megatron was demoted to overseeing an experiment the Decepticons were carrying out on [[Earth]], creating biomechanical creatures in an undersea base with the aid of some human scientists. The experiment ran out of control when the monsters turned on Megatron and the Decepticons and kept them trapped in the base, only periodically departing to attack human shipping vessels. These attacks caught the attention of the Autobots, who discovered the existence of the base by tracking the creatures' movements, and sent a team in to investigate. The team include an [[Eldedroid]] (a robot duplicate of Optimus Prime) controlled by the mind of a human named [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Dan]], who was attacked by Megatron when he broke off from his teammates to search the base. As Megatron was without his fusion cannon, Dan was unwilling to shoot him, and instead engaged him in a fist fight, albeit one that he had little chance of winning. Unlike the other Decepticons, Megatron was not fooled by the Eldedroid's appearance: He knew that he was not fighting his true eternal enemy. In 1984, the fourteen-year-old Spike was working on an oil rig with his father [[Sparkplug Witwicky|Sparkplug]] when his life was turned upside-down by the arrival of the [[Decepticon]]s. The evil robots began attacking the rig and terrorizing the workers; when Spike tried vainly to save his father from the clutches of [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]], he was swatted away by the Decepticon and fell in the ocean. Sparkplug broke free from Rumble's grip a second later and leapt in after him, and as the two Witwickys floated in the brine, the [[Autobot]]s arrived to stop the Decepticons' evildoing. To cover the villains' escape, [[Megatron (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Megatron]] collapsed the oil rig, imprisoning Spike and Sparkplug beneath a metal lattice with fire creeping towards them. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 1}} Autobot leader [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] freed the two humans and brought them to safety, and in reciprocation, Spike and his father offered to serve as the Autobots' guides to [[Earth]] and allies in the fight against the Decepticons.

When he returned, however, he was horrified to discover that the device had been the Decepticon [[Soundwave (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Soundwave]] in disguise, and that he had downloaded much secret information from [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]]. Using that information, the Decepticons soon struck [[Sherman Dam]], and when the Autobots tried to stop them, Hound was buried under a pile of rocks, deep in the river, by Rumble. Spike dived in to save him, but once he had done so, he then had to be saved by Hound, who gave him CPR.

Unfortunately, this first mission together did not go very well, as Spike was captured by the Decepticons and almost used as a guinea pig for the first test run of the space bridge, but was thankfully saved at the last second by Optimus Prime and Bumblebee. {{storylink|Transport to Oblivion}}

Spike's friend [[Chip Chase]] brought Spike and Bumblebee on a visit to the laboratory of [[Doctor Alcazar]], with whom he was working on an [[antimatter]] formula. [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] attacked the trio as they were leaving the lab, and although they were able to escape, the Decepticons returned to capture Chip in his home. Spike, Bumblebee, Hound and Mirage teamed up to rescue Chip, but the Decepticons were still able to acquire the antimatter formula. In the battle that resulted, [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] was wielding the antimatter-powered Megatron when Spike bravely attacked his leg with a pneumatic drill. Skywarp seized the boy, but this gave Chip the distraction he needed to plant an override device on the Decepticon's leg, allowing [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] to control Skywarp's motor relays remotely, tipping the scales of the battle in the Autobots' favor. {{storylink|Roll for It}}

Spike was helping Optimus Prime search for the newest location of the Decepticons' space bridge when a distress call from Chip summoned them to a munitions plant under Decepticon attack. Prime was fatally wounded in the subsequent battle, forcing Chip and a team of Autobots to head to Cybertron to recover a replacement [[cosmitron]] for his systems. In their absence, the Decepticons attacked Autobot Headquarters, and the leaderless Autobots could not muster the courage to fight. Claiming that this was not what Prime would have wanted, Spike seized Jazz's pistol and announced that he would fight the battle himself if he had to, his bravery galvanizing the other Autobots into action. During the fight, the Cybertron team returned with the cosmitron, restoring Prime, who defeated Megatron and won the day. {{storylink|Divide and Conquer}}

A freak snowstorm in the desert around Autobot Headquarters gave Spike cause for celebration, as he introduced the Autobots to the wonders of a snowball fight. When the unnatural weather was discovered to be the product of a Decepticon plot at the North Pole, Spike and his father headed to the Arctic Circle with the Autobots. There, the two humans were captured by the Decepticons' newest recruit [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]], but they could see that his heart wasn't in the evil robots' scheme, and he soon switched sides. {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}}

When the Autobots discovered a cavern full of [[dinosaur]] bones behind their Headquarters, Spike educated them on the ancient reptiles, and helped design the robotic "[[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]" that Optimus Prime decided to have created based on Spike's stories. {{storylink|S.O.S. Dinobots}} Later, he and Bumblebee headed to South America to investigate a Decepticon scheme in Peru, where he got cosy with a native girl named [[Luisa]] after he saved her life. After he and Chip helped the Autobots create two more Dinobots, {{storylink|War of the Dinobots}} Spike faced his greatest challenge yet when he saw his father abducted by the Decepticons. The Autobots quickly enacted a rescue plan, but Spike soon realized that his father was not in his right mind when he discovered that he was responsible for sabotaging Teletraan I and the Autobots' weapons. Concurrently, the Decepticons activated a massive space bridge that teleported the entire planet [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] into Earth's orbit, causing massive natural disasters that Spike and the Autobots were also forced to contend with. Discovering that his father had been taken to Cybertron, Spike insisted that Optimus Prime allow him and a team of Autobots to go to the planet and find him. Navigating traps and ventilation shafts, Spike, Bumblebee and [[Brawn (G1)|Brawn]] made their way to [[Decepticon Headquarters (Cybertron)|Decepticon Headquarters]], where Spike confronted his father in hopes of bringing him to his sense. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} Unfortunately, Sparkplug instead triggered an alarm that brought the Decepticons running, forcing Spike and the Autobots to flee and take refuge in [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]]'s old laboratory. There, Wheeljack analyzed a computer disk stolen from Decepticon Headquarters by Bumblebee and created a device to undo the hypno-chips' effects. Spike served as bait to lure the Decepticons and Sparkplug out so that the device could be tested, and although he was nearly shot by his brainwashed father, Wheeljack's counter-weapon succeeded, freeing Sparkplug from Decepticon control. The Autobots and Witwickys headed back to Earth, where Spike hit on the idea to blow up the Decepticons' stockpile of [[energon cube]]s in order to blast Cybertron out of Earth orbit. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 3}}

Spike traveled with the Autobots to [[Bali]] to battle the newest Decepticons, the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticons]], and was the one who came up with the idea to use Trailbreaker's forcefield to block [[Shrapnel (G1)|Shrapnel]]'s clone beams. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}} Soon after, Spike was among the spectators of a mighty one-on-one battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron, which ended with Prime's defeat. When Megatron was revealed to have cheated by combining all the powers of the Decepticons together, the Autobots overturned the result of the fight and sent the Decepticons tumbling into a river of lava. Spike wondered if this was truly the end of the Transformers' war, but Optimus Prime was uncertain. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

When Spike was grievously injured by Megatron in a Decepticon attack, the Autobots had to figure out a way to remove his mind from his body so that life-saving surgery could be performed. The process was carried out using [[Autobot X]], a [[Doctor Frankenstein|Frankenstein]]-like robot created by Sparkplug from various Autobot spare parts, but the unstable robot body clouded Spike's mind. He began rampaging, and eventually fled Autobot Headquarters, at which point he was approached by Megatron, who manipulated him into allying with the Decepticons against his friends. Only after nearly killing his father did Spike come to his senses, and turned on the Decepticons, after which his mind was subsequently transferred back into his body. {{storylink|Autobot Spike}}

Spike was instrumental in saving [[New York City]] from Decepticon domination when he and Bumblebee infiltrated Megatron's command post and goaded him into destroying his own weapons control console, {{storylink|City of Steel}} after which he had to fight against his friends when the Autobots fell under the influence of a Decepticon [[personality destabilizer device]]. {{storylink|Attack of the Autobots}}

While on a run to pick up a [[polarizer]] for Wheeljack's new [[Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer|Immobilizer]] invention, Spike and Bumblebee stopped off at the [[Robots Video Arcade]], where Spike was approached by an older girl named [[Carly]]. When it turned out that all she wanted was to be introduced to Bumblebee, however, Spike excused himself and his Autobot buddy, and they had an eventful journey back to the base, enduring a policeman who questioned Spike's driving age and a surprise attack by [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]]. Carly trailed them back, and then helped them out in their mission to reclaim the stolen Immobilizer from the Decepticons. At the adventure's end, Spike invited Carly out for a chocolate soda, beginning a romance between the two teens. {{storylink|The Immobilizer}}

When Spike and Chip came up with the idea of the Autobots racing for charity, they could never have predicted that the Decepticons would use it as an opportunity to trap the heroic robots in their vehicle modes with their new [[Transfixatron]]. Wheeljack and [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] managed to escape the paralyzing device's influence and created a [[Anti-transfixation grenade|grenade]] to undo its effects, and Chip and Spike outran Soundwave and his cassettes to detonate it in the Autobots' midst and save them. {{storylink|The Autobot Run}}

After a lesson in how to play football, Spike went with a team of Autobots to investigate the underwater city of [[Sub-Atlantica]], and told them of the legend of [[Atlantis]] that was potentially inspired by it. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}} Later, while investigating a Decepticon oil pumping platform, Spike was captured alongside Skyfire and Hound, but was able to effect their release by incapacitating their Decepticon guards with an electro-magnet. {{storylink|Day of the Machines}} Later still, Spike told the Autobots about ninjas when he attended the unveiling of [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]]. {{storylink|Enter the Nightbird}}

When a mysterious second [[Optimus Prime clone|Optimus Prime]] appeared while the Autobots were investigating a crevice of [[korlonium crystal]]s, Spike proposed a series of tests to determine which was the real one. The tests failed, but the impostor Prime was revealed when he displayed no concern for Spike after the boy was captured by Megatron. His deception revealed, Megatron hurled Spike through the air to cover his retreat, but he was safely rescued by [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]]. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}} Soon after, Spike joined the Autobots in battling the super-powered Insecticons, and bravely climbed Shrapnel's body to deliver by hand the antidote that stopped his over-charged frame from exploding. {{storylink|The Insecticon Syndrome}}

The Autobots' discovery of a mysterious prehistoric island where dinosaurs still lived was a dream come true for Spike, and he christened the lost world "[[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]]" when Powerglide and the Dinobots took him there. After some perilous encounters with the local wildlife, however, Spike decided he would limit his dinosaur experiences to reading about them in [[Ere Cenozoique Periode Tertiaire|books]]. Powerglide returned Spike home, but while he and Bumblebee headed to the library, the Decepticons arrived on Dinobot Island and began draining its many sources of energy. This caused a series of time warps to open all over the world, including one that disgorged barbarians and woolly mammoths right into Spike and Bumblebee's path! The time-tossed creatures collapsed a building on top of the duo, {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} but Bumblebee shielded Spike with his body, and the other Autobots soon arrived to dig them out and send the unwelcome visitors back through the time warp. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}} A little later, Spike taught Optimus Prime how to play basketball. {{storylink|The Master Builders}}

Spike believed it was "about time" when the mayor of [[Central City (Earth)|Central City]] decided to honor the Autobots with a holiday dedicated to them, but he was horrified when mayoral rival [[Shawn Berger]] interrupted the ceremony with a tape given to him by Megatron that framed the Autobots for energy theft. Naturally, Spike, his father and Chip were not fooled by the bogus footage, but unfortunately, they were about the only humans who stood by the Autobots. When the heroic robots went to trial, Spike left in the middle of the proceedings to try and locate some evidence to prove their innocence. He was successful, discovering more footage on the tape that revealed the "Autobots" on display as disguised Decepticons, but was then confronted by Ravage. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Escaping, Spike presented his evidence to the mayor, but it came too late: the Autobots had already been exiled from Earth, and the world was now celebrating the Decepticons. Megatron did not allow his pantomime to last long, however, announcing in a press conference his dominion over Central City. Spike was captured and put to work in a slave camp along with the rest of the city's population, but thankfully, before long, the Autobots returned to Earth to clear their names and rout the Decepticons. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2}}

Spike and Carly were enjoying themselves at an amusement park with Bumblebee, but the merriment had to come to an end so they could go to the airport and pick up Sparkplug. The airfield soon became a battlefield, however, when a Decepticon base was discovered in a nearby hangar and the Dinobots were ordered in to attack. Badly damaged by the fight, the Dinobots decided to finally secede from the Autobots, but this could not have come at a worse time: no sooner had they left than the Autobots began to malfunction due to [[cybertonium]] deterioration. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}} Spike and Carly volunteered to go to Cybertron to recover a fresh supply, but as soon as they had arrived, they fell afoul of Shockwave, and were forced to flee into the tiny tunnels honeycombing the planet. Heading for Wheeljack's lab, Spike and Carly encountered [[Swoop (G1)|Swoop]], who had come to Cybertron with the other Dinobots, but had been the only member of the team to avoid capture. With Swoop to help them, Spike and Carly navigated the the ancient traps in the bowels of the planet, and even found a historical video records room that relayed for them the history of the Transformers' war. While watching the video, they were ambushed by Shockwave's [[Sentinel (G1)|sentinels]] and taken to join the other Dinobots in the cybertonium pits. The Dinobots had had their memory circuits bypassed to ensure their compliance, but Carly soon put their systems right, and they worked with the two humans to escape the pits, defeat their captors and return to Earth with enough cybertonium to repair all the Autobots. Spike and Carly got to travel to the [[moon (moon)|moon]] when the Decepticons threatened the world with the [[Voltronic Galaxer]], {{storylink|Blaster Blues}} after which Spike went on an even greater journey: into the past! Along with [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] and [[Warpath (G1)|Warpath]], Spike followed a group of Decepticons through a relic called the [[Dragon Mound]], which transported them to 543 AD. There, Spike took an immediate liking to [[Nimue]], the daughter of a local nobleman, and tried to single-handedly rescue her when she was kidnapped by the Decepticons and their local ally, [[Sir Wigend du Blackthorne]]. Unfortunately, by the time Spike had scaled the tower Nimue was being held in (which was in and of itself a challenge thanks to the heavy suit of armor Hoist had made for him), she and Wigend had fallen in love and become engaged! Spike subsequently returned to the present with the Transformers, where we can only assume he didn't tell Carly about the hot medieval chick. {{storylink|A Decepticon Raider in King Arthur's Court}}

When several Autobots and Decepticons were lost in a space bridge accident, Spike was among those who huddled around Teletraan I as Chip tried to use the computer to locate them. {{storylink|Child's Play (episode)|Child's Play}} After the lost Transformers returned, Spike, Bumblebee and [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]] were sent to the planet [[Floron III]] to recover [[robotic insecticide]] that would help deal with the threat of the Insecticons. Unfortunately, they also inadvertently brought back one of the planet's native lifeforms, the [[Morphobot]]s. {{storylink|Quest for Survival}}

Spike was washed away in a flash flood caused by [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]] when they started fighting for Decepticon leadership, but was rescued by Optimus Prime and carried to safety by Powerglide. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}} Later, Spike was working in his father's automotive garage when Powerglide dropped in with [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz]], a flighty heiress he had rescued from the Decepticons. Spike began hitting on Astoria when they were left along, but when he found that all she wanted to talk about was Powerglide, he grumpily returned to his work...at which point all his equipment started malfunctioning thanks to Astoria's tendency to jinx up machinery around her. When Hoist, Spike and Carly accidentally stumbled into the middle of a movie shoot, the movie's [[director]] decided to hire Hoist and some other Autobots on to star in his movie, and Spike and Carly were given free passes to the studio lot. While there, they discovered the Decepticons were also hiding out on the lot, searching for footage a film crew had accidentally taken of a secret cargo they were transporting. Spike and Carly were able to get hold of the negative the Decepticons were looking for, and fled (with some difficulty) through the myriad movie sets decorating the lot. Eventually, the Decepticons were tricked into believing the negative was destroyed when Hoist pretended to be evil and dropped it, Spike and Carly in a vat of lava...but of course, it was only movie magic. {{storylink|Hoist Goes Hollywood}}

Spike, Carly and Sparkplug were in the audience when [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] received the [[National Scientific Achievement]] award for his newest invention, [[Corrostop]]. {{storylink|Cosmic Rust (episode)|Cosmic Rust}} Later, when the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]] tried to plunge the Earth into the sun using the space bridge, Spike helped the Autobots find the missing space bridge control panel, and convinced Megatron to join forces with them to stop the Combaticons' plan. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}} For his final recorded adventure in the 20th century, Spike aided the Autobots in apprehending the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]], reacting with some distress to the sight of Optimus Prime playing "chicken" with [[Motormaster (G1)|Motormaster]]. {{storylink|Masquerade}}

Over the course of the next twenty years, Spike and Carly married and had a son named [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel]]. Spike was even able to take a more active hand in the Transformers' battles, as he was given a transforming [[exosuit]]. In the course of these twenty years, the Decepticons finally conquered Cybertron, forcing the Autobots to relocate to their newly-built [[Autobot City]] on Earth, and to bases on two of Cybertron's moon. In the year 2005, the thirty-five-year-old Spike was stationed on [[Moonbase Two]] with Bumblebee when the Autobots decided to make their big push against the Decepticons, and he requested that [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] tell Daniel, on Earth, that he would be home soon.

Spike could never have predicted what would happen next. As he and Bumblebee watched, the monstrous planet [[Unicron]] appeared from the depths of space and consumed Moonbase One, with Moonbase Two next on the menu. Acting quickly, Spike and Bumblebee set a stockpile of explosives to blow up the moon right in Unicron's mouth as they escaped on a shuttlecraft. When the smoke cleared, however, they found that Unicron was completely uninjured, and a frustrated Spike expressed his discontent in a distinctly PG manner. Their craft was then caught in the suction from Unicron's mouth, and they were pulled in to the behemoth's digestive system, where they hung from a conveyor, waiting to be dropped into an acid pit. Thankfully, they were saved from his messy fate by Daniel, wearing an older version of Spike's exosuit, who shot the pit cover down just as they were dropped. Spike and his son escaped Unicron's body along with the other Autobots who had entered it, as the chaos-bringer exploded thanks to the power of the Autobot [[Matrix of Leadership]]. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie}}

Under their new leader, [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus Prime]], the Autobots subsequently forced the Decepticons off Cybertron and retook the planet. With Cybertron established as a force for good in the universe once more, Spike was appointed Earth's official ambassador to the planet. {{storylink|Madman's Paradise}}

While attending the first [[Galactic Olympics]], Spike, [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and [[Kup (G1)|Kup]] were captured by a strike team of [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticons]] that attacked the event. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1}} They were taken to the planet [[Quintessa]], where the native [[Quintesson]]s questioned them, and then intended to put them to death. The trio tried rushing the aliens and taking [[Deliberata|one of their number]] captive, but the other Quintessons simply sentenced their comrade to death along with them, and they were all dropped into the Sharkticon pit together. At the last moment, a team of Autobots arrive to pluck them from the jaws of death, but the Quintessons then detonated a [[core bomb]] that blew up their planet and sent the Autobots and Spike hurtling through space. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2}} They eventually landed on the planet [[Goo #8739B]], where they came under attack from the Decepticons, now allied with the Quintessons, {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 3}} but they were soon rescued by the [[Junkion (species)|Junkions]]. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4}} They returned to Cybertron, but the Decepticons and Quintessons pursued them, and ultimately, the aliens betrayed their allies when they activated a [[large switch]] that shut down Transformers all across the galaxy. Unfortunately for them, the Quintessons had not reckoned with Spike, who used the paralyzed Rodimus Prime's gun to destroy the switch, undoing its effects. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5}}

In 2006, while fleeing from a Decepticon attack, Spike, Daniel and a team of Autobots took refuge in the colossal [[Autobot Mausoleum|mausoleum]] the Autobots had built to hold the bodies of their fallen warriors. There, they discovered that Optimus Prime was apparently not dead after all, as he appeared to see the Decepticons off. Rodimus quickly returned the Matrix to his old leader, at which point Optimus was revealed to simply be a re-animated Quintesson pawn who activated the mausoleum's self-destruct sequence and left Spike and the others to die in the mausoleum. Luckily, they were able to hastily construct an improvised craft to get themselves to safety. {{storylink|Dark Awakening}}

Despite preparations for the first major peace conference on Cybertron taking up most of his time, Spike was still able to organize a surprise party for Daniel's birthday. This gave Daniel the idea to have a party for Ultra Magnus, however, and he proceeded to get in a lot of trouble trying to find out the Autobot's birthday. Once Daniel had been rescued from the Decepticons' clutches, Spike decided that they would just appoint that day as Ultra Magnus's birthday. {{storylink|Surprise Party}} Later, he welcomed the ambassador from [[Odessix]], [[Ynara]], to Cybertron, and had to make a few apologies for the bored Daniel's brusque behavior. Daniel subsequently went missing (in actuality, he was transported to the other-dimensional world of [[Menonia]]), but Carly told Spike to stay at the party while she and [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]] went looking. {{storylink|Madman's Paradise}}

When Daniel began suffering nightmares, Spike and Carly called on Rodimus Prime to help ease the boy's troubles. {{storylink|Nightmare Planet}} A little later, Spike accompanied Kup on a security inspection of [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]], during which Starscream's ghost and [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] tried to steal the giant Autobot's eyes. Spike and Bumblebee teamed up to investigate, and caught the villains in the act. {{storylink|Ghost in the Machine}} Spike also helped Rodimus Prime moderate peace talks between the planets [[Xetaxxis]] and [[Lanarq]], {{storylink|The Quintesson Journal}} after which he and Daniel helped the Autobots by posing as human repairmen to sneak inside [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] and steal his [[transforming cog]]. {{storylink|The Ultimate Weapon}}

In 2007, Spike was on Cybertron when the Decepticons launched a massive attack on the planet with the intention of taking control of the legendary [[Plasma energy|Plasma Energy Chamber]]. Together with a team of Autobots, Spike pursued Scourge deep into the planet, where a blast of energy from the Plasma Energy Chamber struck their craft and overloaded its engines, sending them careening across the galaxy, wildly out of control. They eventually crashed on the planet [[Nebulos]], where they ran afoul of a cell of rebel Nebulans who were fighting against the [[Hive (G1)|Hive]], the tyrannical rulers of their planet, and mistook the Autobots for their robot servants. Spike tried to talk the Nebulans out of destroying the captured Autobots, but it took the arrival of the Decepticons for the Nebulans to risk releasing their prisoners to help them fight back. During the battle, several Autobots were captured, forcing the Autobots and Nebulans to take a drastic step: to fight back against the Decepticons and the Hive, four Nebulans and four Autobots volunteered to undergo a process developed by [[Brainstorm]] that would merge them together into [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmasters]]. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 1}} Spike carried out the biotechnological modifications, following Brainstorm's design, and in addition to the Nebulans, also bonded Daniel to [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]] at her request in order to save his life. The Decepticons subsequently emulated the Autobots' Headmaster process with members of the Hive, and also modified the process to create [[Targetmaster]]s. To battle against [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], the gigantic robot created by Hive leader [[Zarak (Nebulan)|Lord Zarak]] from the Hive's own subterranean city, Spike had the pacifistic Autobot [[Cerebros (G1)|Cerebros]] lead him to the Hive's old, abandoned surface city, which he had previously discovered while wandering the planet. There, Spike used the city's old machines to reconstruct it, Cerebros and himself, bonding them all together into the mighty [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]]. Spike flew his new creation to Cybertron (which the Decepticons have moved into the vicinity of Earth with a giant rocket engine in his absence), where he battled and defeated Scorponok and rescued Daniel and the captive Autobots within the giant robot's city banks. The Decepticons, however, had already opened the Plasma Energy Chamber, which threatened to drive the [[Sun]] nova and destroy Earth, Cybertron and the entire [[solar system]]. As they were organic and unaffected by the chamber's energy, Spike and the Nebulons were able to act quickly to save the planet by shutting the chamber down and reversing the Decepticons' rocket to draw off the excess solar energy. This energy was funnelled into [[Vector Sigma]], revitalizing Cybetron and bringing about a new [[Golden Age]]. Despite all of this, Cerebros was insistent that Spike deactivate him so that he would never have to fight again...but quickly changed his tune when Spike transformed back into his head so that he could see the beauty of the restored planet. Optimus Prime subsequently appointed Cerebros as guardian of Nebulos, where he and the other Autobot Headmasters would root out and destroy the lingering influence of the Hive, after which Cerebros would live on the planet as its guardian. In 2011, Spike was enjoying a cup of tea with Carly on Cybertron when the Decepticons suddenly launched a massive offensive against the planet, backed up with the added power of their new Headmaster warriors. Spike quickly contacted Optimus Prime at the Autobots' secondary command post on the planet [[Athenia]], and then withdrew to the safety of Athenia himself once reinforcements arrived on Cybertron. {{storylink|Four Warriors Come out of the Sky}} Optimus Prime himself was among the Autobots who went to Cybertron, intending to stabilize Vector Sigma, which had begun to run out of control. Spike had researched the computer and claimed there was no way to stop it without the Matrix, which was precisely what Prime didn't have. When Spike next appeared, he had sustained some serious injuries through unexplained means. After Cybertron was destroyed thanks to the machinations of Decepticon Headmaster leader [[Scorponok (G1)#Japanese cartoon continuity|Scorponok]], Spike moved his family and his research to Athenia. The Autobot Headmasters were called in while Spike, Daniel and Wheelie returned to Athenia, {{storylink|Explosion on Mars!! Maximus Is in Danger}} but alas, the four young heroes were not able to stop Mars from being blown up. {{storylink|Explosion on Mars!! MegaZarak Appears}} Spike subsequently scanned the remains of the the planet with Arcee and [[Broadside (G1)|Broadside]], and they concluded that the gravimetric balance of the solar system had been badly damaged. When the Autobots received an distress signal from the planet [[Sandra]] in a parallel dimension, which was running critically low on energy, Spike was unsure whether or not they should risk giving up any of their own carefully-managed energy supply. He was eventually convinced that it was the right way to proceed, and even allowed Daniel and Wheelie to travel to Sandra with him and the Headmasters on the basis that it would be a good experience for them. His fears for the safety of the universe growing since the destruction of Mars, Spike stunned the Autobots when he announced his intention to negotiate with Galvatron the possibility of the Autobots and Decepticons allying to create a joint energy development programme. Even more surprising was that Galvatron ''agreed'', on the condition that Spike bring Carly and Daniel with him, that the Decepticons might hold them hostage so that the negotiations could be held in "good faith". Negotiations proceeded badly, with Galvatron accusing Spike of arguing from a non-neutral position, given that he lived with the Autobots on Athenia, instead of his native Earth. Galvatron instructed Spike to leave his "most precious thing" on Earth to prove his neutrality: his son, Daniel! Daniel reluctantly agreed to stay on Earth, and Carly decided to stay with him, meaning that Spike would be separated from his whole family in the pursuit of peace. As it turned out, however, Spike wasn't actually negotiating with Galvatron at all: a transmission from [[Chaar]] by the Autobot spy [[Punch (G1)|Punch]] revealed that the real Galvatron was still there, and that Spike was conversing with a disguised [[Sixshot]]! The Decepticons were using the peace talks as a cover to embark on an interplanetary energy quest, and the Autobots were left in the dust as a consequence. The Autobots' return to Earth some time later heralded a great loss, as Ultra Magnus soon died in battle with Sixshot, and Spike wept at his funeral. {{storylink|Ultra Magnus Dies!!}} Decepticon attacks continued with increased ferocity around the globe, angering Spike, {{storylink|The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg}} but he did not let these tragedies deter him from his work. While attending a summit on Earth to discuss using the planet's volcanoes for power, he realized that the Decepticons' recent activities had been focused on the [[Pacific Ring of Fire]]. When he returned to Autobot City to present his findings, however, the city came under attack by Trypticon and Sixshot, and Spike was wounded by a stray laser blast. With all of the Headmasters' technology unable to remove a large chunk of shrapnel embedded in one of his arteries, Spike told Daniel to remain strong even in the face of his death, and to take his place as Earth's envoy to the Autobots. Luckily, this wasn't necessary: in a drastic step that used up all of his energy, [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress]] used his telekinetic powers to dissolve the shrapnel and save Spike's life. {{storylink|I Risk My Life for Earth}}

In a major subsequent battle, the Autobots were able to force the Decepticons to withdraw from Earth, seemingly for good. Fortress appointed Spike head of the clean-up operation to remove all traces of the villains' memory from Earth, and Spike started by organizing an Autobot wrecking crew to destroy the Decepticons' desert Earth headquarters. {{storylink|Miraculous Warriors, Targetmasters (Part 1)}} News soon reached the Autobots on Earth that the Decepticons had returned to the Headmasters' home planet, [[Master (planet)|Master]], and Daniel petitioned Spike to be allowed to accompany the Headmasters there. With Fortress and the other Headmasters not yet back from Master, Spike was left to co-ordinate the Autobot counter-attack to the Decepticons' renewed offensive, and headed to Santiago, [[Chile]] with Carly to investigate the emergence of a strange metal tower there. On the way, his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the Andes, where Carly and several other passengers fell into a crevasse. Simultaneously, Fortress's team returned to Earth, and Daniel immediately set out to help his parents. Spike attempted to descend into the crevice himself despite his injuries, and was surprised when Daniel stopped him and insisted that he rescue his mother personally. Daniel performed the task admirably, and Spike could see that his boy had grown into a man. {{storylink|The Final Showdown on Earth (Part 1)}} When the message came in for the Autobots to gather for the final battle with the Decepticons, Spike told Daniel that he would look after Carly so that he could join his friends in the fight.

It's to be assumed that Spike and his father, Sparkplug, met the Autobots early on in their time on Earth (in a similar fashion as Spike and Sparkplug did in the cartoon, or Buster and Sparkplug did in the Marvel Comics). Spike definitely had a younger brother named Buster (as in the Marvel comics), yet it was Spike who formed a close friendship with Bumblebee (as in the cartoon, rather than missing out on the first few years of the Witwicky family's interaction with the Transformers while engaging in drinking orgies at college, as he did in the Marvel comics). The exact details of the Witwickys' early years as the Autobots' human associates are therefore not known.

Somewhere in the time after 1984, Spike married Carly, who then gave birth to Spike's son, Daniel. After the explosion of the ''[[Ark II]]'' in 1999, which caused the death of Spike's father Sparkplug, Spike tried to leave his involvement with the Transformers behind and settled down with his wife and son in Cleveland, Ohio, trying to live a new life as a normal family. The newfound peace wouldn't last for long, though, as Spike was soon recruited by a shady military official named [[Robert Hallo|General Hallo]] seeking his help in reviving Optimus Prime, whose body his men had recently found in the Arctic. It was a suicide mission, but Spike was the most qualified. Spike accepted, despite the consequences, but ignored his father's pleas for him to call his worried mother first.

During the night, he and a team snuck into [[New York City]] by boat, but they were discovered by [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]]. With one dive, the boat and its occupants were dashed to bits under the water, and Spike's signal was destroyed. Learning his son was dead, Sparkplug, in shock, believed it was he who had not only sent his son to die, but had inspired Spike to join the military in the first place. But unknown to Sparkplug, his son surfaced on the shore of New York, perfectly alive... {{storylink|All Hail Megatron issue 5|All Hail Megatron #5}}

Stealing new pants from an abandoned [[Gloomingdales]], Spike ran into the leaders of the underground human resistance movement, who were looking for supplies. Spike took [[Bridge]] and [[Sarah]] into an abandoned office building to discuss gathering the resistance and assassinating Megatron. But first, Spike took them into a disguised military facility where he retrieved a weapon created from studying [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]]'s gun arm. Their quick escape was cut short, since [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] was causing a ruckus outside. Telling the others to run for cover, Spike ducked into a building and then reappeared when he drove a motorcycle through an upstairs window, firing a small pistol. This distracted Rumble long enough for [[Charles (G1)|Charles]] to shoot him right in the face. Rumble's defeat was followed by a overcoming sonic screech, and as Soundwave arrived to sadly take Rumble's body away, it seemed the city's electronic blackout was over. Phones were working again, and so Spike called his father. He and his party set up a better sniper position in a nearby building, where they watched [[Megatron (G1)|two]] [[Optimus Prime (G1)|robots]] fight each other. Later, [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] found him and brought him to Optimus Prime. Prime offered to help Spike and the rest of the humans rebuild their planet. Spike thanked Prime for his thought, but said that there was no chance of the Transformers and the humans reconciling. Shortly before the outbreak of the Autobot-Decepticon war nine million years ago, Starscream was not a warrior, but rather a scientist. He and his colleague and friend [[Jetfire (G1)|Skyfire]] were exploring an unnamed planet—the ancient [[Earth]]—when severe atmospheric conditions separated the two friends. Starscream circled the globe looking for Skyfire, but never found him. Upon his return to Cybertron, Starscream mostly abandoned his scientific pursuits, deciding that a career as a warrior would be much more exciting, {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}} and instead enrolled in the [[Cybertron War Academy]], of which he would later profess to be the pride. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}}

Starscream rose through the ranks of Megatron's Decepticons until he reached the position of second in command, but even this was not enough: Starscream saw Megatron as old and soft, and after five million years of war drained Cybertron of all its energy, Starscream came to believe that the Decepticons would have won the conflict eons beforehand if he had been in charge. Starscream was never afraid to let Megatron know this, but Megatron was always ready with a disparaging comeback, and the constant belief that while Starscream had the ambition, he did not have the ability to lead.

Starscream was among Megatron's forces aboard the [[Nemesis (G1)|space cruiser]] that pursued the Autobots' [[Ark (G1)|ship]] when it departed Cybertron to search for new energy sources on other planets. The Decepticons boarded the Autobot craft, and it subsequently crashed on Earth, entombing its occupants in stasis for four million years. When a volcanic eruption reawakened the ship's computer, [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]], in 1984, it indiscriminately brought the Decepticons back online, rebuilding their bodies to transform into contemporary Earth machines. Now outfitted with an F-15 [[alternate mode]], Starscream's first act on Earth was one of spitefulness, as he delivered a parting laser blast to the buried Autobot ship. The blast caused a tremor that inadvertently knocked [[Optimus Prime (G1)/Generation 1 cartoon continuity|Optimus Prime]] into the path of Teltraan I's restoration beam, and before long, all the Autobots were operational once more and ready to continue the war on Earth. The work proceeded apace with the Autobots unable to do much to stop the villains, but Starscream wound up costing them time when he decided to test a clutch of [[Energon cube|energon cubes]] by powering a laser turret with them, thereby using them up and necessitating another energy raid. {{storylink|More than Meets the Eye, Part 2}} A little later, when Megatron subjected Starscream to another bout of berating, the Air Commander decided he had had enough, and tried to shoot Megatron in the back. At Soundwave's warning, Megatron blocked the beam and returned fire with his [[fusion cannon]], bringing Starscream to his knees, quite literally begging for mercy. Luckily for him, he got it, but he didn't learn his lesson, since the first thing he did once the space cruiser was completed and airborne was to try for another coup. When the Decepticons began drilling in the North Pole in order to tap the energy of the Earth's core, the excavation wound up unearthing the frozen body of Starscream's old friend, Skyfire. Starscream talked his friend into joining the Decepticons, but Skyfire could not put aside his peaceful scientific ways aside like Starscream had, and their friendship ended when he defected to the Autobots. {{storylink|Fire in the Sky}} After a battle with the Autobots' newest warriors, the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]], including yet another failed attempt and taking leadership when Megatron fell (fell ''down'', that is). {{storylink|S.O.S. Starscream met up with Skyfire again when the Autobot returned to stop a Decepticon plot in Peru. In the process, Starscream found himself on the other side of treachery, when he overheard Thundercracker contemplating letting Skyfire destroy the Decepticons' new weapon, in the hope that Megatron would blame Starscream himself. Starscream tried to shoot Thundercracker but missed and took out Skyfire, then blackmailed Thundercracker into obeying his every command with the threat of revealing his treachery to Megatron. Not long after that Starscream proved he ''did'' still have some scientific leanings, as he was the only Decepticon who urged caution when Megatron pillaged energy from an unstable meteor. After the Decepticons used a colossal space bridge to pull Cybertron into Earth's orbit in order to generate vast amounts of energy, {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 1}} Starscream took every opportunity he could to try and make it seem like the plan wasn't working. {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 2}} When the Decepticons' human ally [[Doctor Arkeville]] was abandoned by Megatron, Starscream abducted the scientist and made the rather outlandish attempt to create energon cubes by drawing on his mental energy. When Megatron caught him in the act, Starscream fled with Arkeville {{storylink|The Ultimate Doom, Part 3}} back to the human's secret laboratory. There, Starscream discovered an [[Exponential Generator]] and destabilized it with the intent of creating an explosion powerful enough to destroy the Earth. Starscream withdrew to Cybertron to watch the cosmic fireworks, but unbeknownst to him, Megatron and Optimus Prime had joined forces to launch the exponential generator into space. When the Earth failed to explode on schedule, Starscream headed back to the planet to investigate, but was knocked out of the sky by the passage of the exponential generator and crashed, right at the feet of a vengeful Megatron. Autobot Jazz wagered the Autobots had seen the last of Starscream for a while, {{storylink|Countdown to Extinction (episode)|Countdown to Extinction}} and he was right: Starscream was indeed nowhere to be seen during the Decepticons' next villainous escapade. {{storylink|A Plague of Insecticons}}

Whatever revenge Megatron may have reaped on Starscream, the air commander survived the experience, and was seen again when he and the other Decepticons bestowed their [[power chip rectifier]]s upon Megatron. This process gave Megatron access to all the Decepticons' special powers, including Starscream's null rays and cluster bombs, so he could easily defeat Optimus Prime in a one-on-one battle. Starscream pointed out the sheer illegality of this scheme, but Megatron was above caring. As it turned out, Starscream was right again: although Megatron defeated Prime, when the Autobots discovered his breach of the rules, their revenge was swift. {{storylink|Heavy Metal War}}

Starscream eagerly took to action in the Decepticons' next battle, {{storylink|Autobot Spike}} but was somewhat more reserved in regards to Megatron' new [[Solar Needle]] weapon, fearing that it would destabilize the Earth. Told by Megatron not to concern himself with matters he did not understand, he instead passed the time threatening and bossing around the captive [[Gears (G1)|Gears]]. {{storylink|Changing Gears}} Later, when Megatron had the Decepticons transform New York into a new Cybertron, Starscream had to admit that he was impressed by the scheme despite himself. {{storylink|City of Steel}}

Starscream helped Megatron implant a [[personality destabilizer]] in the Autobots' [[Recharging chamber|recharging chambers]] by using [[invisibility spray]], {{storylink|Attack of the Autobots}} and then joined in the theft of [[Electro-cell|electro-cells]] from a human laboratory, only to wind up embarrassing himself by rushing to use them to create energon cubes, which exploded due to the cells' instability. {{storylink|Traitor}} Starscream was later part of the Decepticon team that stole the Autobots' [[Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer|Immobilizer]] weapon, and briefly tried to seize leadership when Megatron was felled by Optimus Prime during the Autobots' attempt to reclaim the device. {{storylink|The Immobilizer}}

After serving as Megatron's unwilling guinea pig in the first test of the transformation-freezing [[Transfixatron]], {{storylink|The Autobot Run}} Starscream's cautious side came to the fore again when the Decepticons allied themselves with the fish-people of [[Sub-Atlantica]]. Starscream did not trust the sub-aquatic kingdom's boastful leader [[Nergill]], and his suspicions were proven correct when Nergill shot him with an [[Magnetic dysfunction ray|anti-Transformer disruptor ray]]. Starscream recovered in time to save Megatron from a blast of the ray, but Megatron did not believe Starscream's accusation of treachery until the fish-king went off the deep end and tried to destroy the Transformers, Sub-Atlantica and himself by detonating the city's energy stockpile. {{storylink|Atlantis, Arise!}}

Starscream was less than impressed with Megatron's decision to steal the Earth-made robot ninja [[Nightbird (G1)|Nightbird]], but when Megatron threatened to replace the Air Commander with the femme-bot, Starscream helped the Autobots take her down with a blast of his null ray. {{storylink|Enter the Nightbird}} Soon after, when Megatron sought to dupe the Autobots with a clone of Optimus Prime, his plan necessitated the creation of a Starscream clone, so that the Prime copy could convince the Autobots that it was the genuine article by destroying it. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}}

The scientist in Starscream saw danger in Megatron's plan to drill to the Earth's core, but Megatron placated him by revealing an emergency space bridge that could whisk them off to Cybertron if things went wrong. They never got the chance, though, as the Autobots destroyed the bridge, forcing the Decepticons to work with them to halt the drill and save the planet. {{storylink|The Core}}

Following a brief stint as a mind-controlled minion of [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]], {{storylink|The Insecticon Syndrome}} Starscream accompanied the Decepticons to the mysterious [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], where the strange waves of chronal energy surrounding the prehistoric paradise gave him cause for concern. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} Starscream theorized that draining the delicate energies of the island could disrupt the fabric of time, and he was right: time warps began appearing all across the world, and the Autobots sprang into action to stop the Decepticons' scheme. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

After shooting down [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] and accusing the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]] of treachery, {{storylink|The Master Builders}} Starscream proved just how much of a case of the pot calling the kettle black that was when he tricked the mentally-addled Autobot [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]] into giving him access to the Autobots' new [[Negavator]] tank. Starscream planned to use the weapon to take control of the Decepticons, but when Megatron rumbled his scheme, he claimed that he had only been stealing the weapon for his leader. Realizing that Starscream meant to take the Negavator from him, Red Alert turned on him, and Starscream shot him with his null rays, which wound up stabilizing his logic circuits. {{storylink|Auto Berserk}}

Starscream had a nasty encounter with a snake in the jungles of South America when the Decepticons were searching for their lost original space cruiser and its power core, the [[Heart of Cybertron]], but his spirits were put right by a good bout of over-energizing with the other Decepticons that evening. {{storylink|Microbots}}

Starscream, Megatron and Soundwave then attempted to steal the plans for the Ultra Plane, but Starscream and Soundwave were tricked into retreating when [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] projected a hologram of Megatron fleeing. Soon after, [[cybertonium]] degradation began to impair the Decepticons' functionality, and before he succumbed to it, Starscream took another grab for leadership when Megatron's vocal circuits were scrambled by the condition. {{storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}} After the Decepticons recovered, Starscream helped steal the [[Voltronic Galaxer]]. {{storylink|Blaster Blues}}

Retreating into a cave with Rumble, Ravage and [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] at his side, Starscream discovered that the cave was, in fact, a mystical time travel device, which thrust them back through the ages to 543 AD, with Autobots [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] and [[Warpath (G1)|Warpath]] hot on their heels. Seeing a primitive world that he could easily conquer laid out before him, Starscream allied himself with local ne'er-do-well [[Sir Wigend du Blackthorne]], but soon double-crossed him and took control of his castle and army. Starscream dismissed the chivalry of the age and abducted [[Nimue]], daughter of neighboring ruler [[Sir Aetheling the Red]], demanding that he surrender his kingdom in return for his progeny's safety. All the Transformers were low on energy, so Starscream put his scientific skills to use creating gunpowder and primitive electric dynamo, giving the Decepticons the ability to fight back against the Autobots and Sir Aetheling's armies when they marshalled against him. Starscream was the first Decepticon to test out a mysterious golden lagoon of [[electrum]] discovered on Earth, and was made invulnerable by the powerful alloy. The Decepticons were easily able to defeat the Autobots in battle thanks to their new invincible coating, but Megatron was not impressed when Starscream had captives [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]] and [[Beachcomber (G1)|Beachcomber]] fight gladiator-style. As punishment, he had Starscream lead an attack on the giant Autobot Omega Supreme—a task Starscream was terrified at the prospect of, even with his newfound invulnerability. When Starscream, [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]] and [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] pursued [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]] to [[Saturn]]'s moon of [[Titan (moon)|Titan]], Starscream was less than impressed when [[Titan (species)|the natives]] began worshipping Astrotrain as their supreme god. {{storylink|The God Gambit}} Starscream later encountered Cosmos again, along with Powerglide, in New York, inadvertently revealing the location of the Decepticons' new base in the New Jersey Pine Barrens to the Autobots. {{storylink|Make Tracks}}

Starscream was among a small group of Autobots and Decepticons who were transported to an alien world of giants by a malfunctioning space bridge. Starscream was nearly dissected for study by the authorities of this planet, and when Autobot scientist [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] cobbled together a makeshift space bridge to send them home, he and the Decepticons were only too happy to make the trip back to Earth. {{storylink|Child's Play (episode)|Child's Play}} After returning, Starscream was caught up in the menace of the [[Morphobot|morphobots]], {{storylink|Quest for Survival}} then helped operate the Decepticons' new "[[energy magnet]]". {{storylink|Kremzeek!}}

Conspiring with Astrotrain and Blitzwing to overthrow Megatron by freezing him in a subterranean chamber full of absolute zero degree molecules, Starscream found himself betrayed by the two [[Triple Changer|Triple Changers]] and frozen in the chamber along with Megatron. Blitzwing and Astrotrain's subsequent rampage caused a tidal wave (among many other things) that freed the two frozen Decepticons, and Starscream pleaded ignorance of the betrayal. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}} Later, when eccentric big game hunter [[Lord Chumley]] began targeting the Autobots, Starscream smirkingly pointed out that he had achieved more in two days than Megatron had in two years. {{storylink|Prime Target}}

Using the [[Dancitron]] dance club, Starscream and Soundwave used hypnotic music signals to brainwash human beings into helping them build a new Decepticon headquarters in the heart of New York, but they were stopped by [[Tracks (G1)|Tracks]], [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]] and the [[Bop Crew]]. {{storylink|Auto-Bop}} Later, he returned to Cybertron to aid Shockwave in the capture of Autobot resistance leader [[Elita One]], holding her to ransom to lure Optimus Prime into Decepticon clutches. The plan succeeded, but when Starscream attempted to melt Optimus Prime down, Elita used her time-freezing powers to save the Autobot leader. When time unfroze, Starscream believed that Prime had been destroyed, so when the Autobot leader return to aid his troops in battle, Starscream was badly thrown and called retreat right away. {{storylink|The Search for Alpha Trion}}

When Dirge crashed in a movie studio back lot while returning to the Decepticon base with a secret cargo, Starscream was charged with recovering footage of the secret cargo that the filmmakers on-site had captured. Unfortunately for Starscream, Megatron was not in a forgiving mood that day, so when he neglected to steal the negatives as well, the Decepticon leader seized him, held him above his head, slammed him off a wall and tore a handful of wires out of his chest, knocking Starscream offline. {{storylink|Hoist Goes Hollywood}}

When Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker's aerial skills wowed the impressionable new Autobots, the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]], Starscream used their naivete to lure them into a trap set by Megatron that temporarily sent them nine million years back in time. {{storylink|War Dawn}} Later, Starscream accompanied Megatron, Astrotrain and Rumble on a mission to the planet [[Antilla]], during which Megatron was struck by a small asteroid that lodged itself in his armor. Starscream's next attempt at a coup was the last straw for Megatron. After Starscream attempted to shoot him in the back yet again, Megatron downed the Air Commander with a blast of his fusion cannon and banished him from the Decepticons, instructing [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]] to drop him on the island of [[Guadalcanal]]. Discovering the ruined hulks of several World War II vehicles on the island, Starscream was struck with the idea to create troops for himself. Overpowering Thundercracker and Skywarp, he hijacked the space bridge and liberated the [[Personality component|personality components]] of a group of dissident "[[Renegade Decepticon]]s" from the [[Decepticon Detention Center|detention center]] on Cybertron, which he placed into the war vehicles, creating the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]]. Starscream ensured the loyalty of the Combaticons by neglecting to install [[energy absorber]]s in their new bodies, meaning that they had to help him capture several Transformers so they could take theirs for their own. In a showdown with the Decepticon forces, Starscream's Combaticons combined into [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]] to overpower [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]], and the giant robot then seized Megatron, as Starscream forced him to hand leadership over to him. Suddenly, Bruticus was ambushed by [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]] and defeated, leaving Starscream without troops and at Megatron's mercy. Unable to stand his imprisonment, Starscream eventually transformed to jet mode and flew off into space, despite not having enough power to make it back to Earth. The Combaticons, meanwhile, towed the asteroid to Cybertron, where they promptly overthrew Shockwave and took control of the planet. Shockwave was sent tumbling off into space and collided with Starscream, tipping the Seeker off to the fact that he was close to Cybertron. The pair returned to Cybertron, where they attempted to fool the Combaticons with holograms, but were ultimately captured and imprisoned. It took the team-up of Megatron and Optimus Prime's forces to save them and stop Bruticus. Starscream used the hologram projector to deceive the Autobots into thinking that Megatron had destroyed Bruticus, but in reality, the combiner survived and was reprogrammed by Megatron to serve him. For supplying him with this mighty new soldier, Megatron welcomed Starscream back into the Decepticon ranks. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}}

In his last recorded adventures in the 1980s, Starscream was his old snarky self, pouring doubt and scorn on Megatron's plans to have the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] steal the components to create a powerful laser weapon, {{storylink|Masquerade}} and to use a gravity-alerting device to blast the moon out of orbit. {{storylink|B.O.T. Over the next twenty years, the Decepticons focused their efforts on conquering Cybertron entirely, driving the Autobots off the planet. In 2005, learning that the Autobots were readying for a major strike to take back the planet, Starscream accompanied Megatron and the Decepticons on a raid on [[Autobot City]] on Earth (although Starscream himself advocated hitting the Autobots' bases on Cybertron's moons first). During the [[Battle of Autobot City|battle]], Starscream narrowly avoided being crushed by the transforming city, and was the one to call retreat when Optimus Prime grievously wounded Megatron in a one-on-one duel. On the return flight to Cybertron, the Decepticons found it necessary to reduce their mass so that Astrotrain could successfully make it back to the planet, and they chose to jettison the damaged passengers. Starscream, of course, wasted no time in setting Megatron adrift, grinning victoriously as his former leader screamed his name as he was swept off on the solar winds.

Fighting immediately broke out amongst the Decepticons over who would become leader now, but Starscream eventually won out. Upon reaching Cybertron, he quickly arranged for a prodigious coronation ceremony complete with [[Constructicon (G1)|trumpeters]] and a [[Transformer clothing|crown]]. Starscream could not have known, of course, that Megatron would be found and reshaped by the godlike planet Transformer [[Unicron]], who recreated him as [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. The reborn Megatron arrived on Cybertron in the midst of Starscream's coronation, declaring the whole affair "bad comedy". Starscream had barely a moment to realize that the being in front of him was Megatron before Galvatron transformed to cannon mode and killed him with a single, terrible blast. Frozen for a moment as his body crackled, blackened and fractured, Starscream crumbled to ash, and was seemingly no more. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie}}

In truth, however, this was not the end for Starscream. When the turncoat Decepticon [[Octane]] was pursued by the revenge-seeking [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] and the [[Sweep]]s, he took refuge in the [[Decepticon Crypt]] in the lower levels of Cybertron, where Starscream was apparently honored by [[:Image:StarscreamCryptMarker1.jpg|a statue that was only a set of legs]]. In the Crypt, Octane was confronted by the spectral form of Starscream, who had transcended death as a shimmering, ethereal "ghost". Starscream's ghost possessed Cyclonus, and he and Octane conspired to hand Galvatron over to Autobot leader [[Rodimus Prime (G1)|Rodimus Prime]]. Galvatron was able to escape the trap, and returned to the Decepticon base on [[Chaar]] in a state of unadulterated fury. He shot his second-in-command, not realizing Cyclonus had not been himself, but Starscream silently leapt into the body of a nearby Sweep, and began planning for the future. {{storylink|Starscream's Ghost}}

Seeking to reactivate Unicron in the hope that the omnipotent being could restore his body, Starscream possessed Scourge and had him open fire on Galvatron, so that he would be branded a traitor and would have no option but to help him. Scourge was successfully able to bring Unicron's disembodied head back online, and the chaos-bringer gave Starscream three tasks he would have to complete in order to obtain his desire. Starscream stole the eyes of [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] and the [[transformation cog]] of [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]], and was then directed to connect Unicron's head to Cybertron itself so the planet could become his new body. Left without any hosts to possess, Starscream demanded that Unicron give him back his body so that he could complete the necessary connections... but as soon as the dark god complied, Starscream double-crossed him and tossed the cables to the ground, telling Unicron to do it himself! Just then, a payload of explosives planted by the Autobots went off, hurling both Starscream and Unicron's head off into space. Starscream was last seen soaring off through the cosmic void, out of control, as Galvatron fired upon him, and Cyclonus wondered how a ghost could tumble through space like that. {{storylink|Ghost in the Machine}}

They found it, but were immediately captured by Starscream. Trapped within an energy cage, they were forced to watch as Megatron prepared to send his Decepticons out to plunder Earth's energy... some more.

Jenny hatched a clever plan and disassembled her communicator. This caught Starscream's attention and he plucked her out of the cage, violently threatening her. Turning on her feminine charms, Jenny begged for Starscream's mercy, giving him a big snuggly hug. As Starscream gleefully buried his face in her bosom, Jenny slyly slapped a device she had fashioned from her communicator onto Starscream's back. Content with a good hug, Starscream returned Jenny to her cage.

Jenny immediately activated the device, an override machine which she used to control Starscream's motor functions. Unloading Starscream's chest missiles, Jenny destroyed the Omega Whip and most of the Decepticon base. Starscream quickly recovered, unaware of what he'd just done, and was yelled at by Megatron. Almost immediately afterward, Starscream and all the other Decepticons fled when [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] arrived alongside the entire Autobot army. {{storylink|Full Throttle Scramble Power!}}

In the late 1990s, Starscream was among the Decepticons who attacked the human-built interstellar teleport system known as "[[Warp Gate|The Trigger]]". The sole survivor of their attack on the space station, [[Makoto (Stargate Battles)|Makoto]], was able to activate the teleport system and send the Decepticons hurtling towards the portal, but Megatron blasted the portal and knocked it offline just as Starscream was about to fly through it. The Autobots soon arrived to stop the Decepticons, {{storylink|First Contact}} but Megatron still had his sights set on the Trigger, and was content to wait until it was repaired so that he could make another play for it. Starscream advocated destroying the Trigger completely to stop the Autobots from using it, but Megatron dismissed the idea, mockingly suggesting that Starscream's passage through the Trigger had devolved him to its primitive level. Starscream stalked away, infuriated, and stared angrily at his own reflection… but while Megatron's assessment may not have been accurate, something clearly ''had'' happened, since Starscream's reflection was ''talking'' to him... {{storylink|Divided Views}}

Soon after, Starscream concocted a plan of his own to gather more energy, establishing a protection-racket style scam with the [[Prime Minister of Japan]], promising no attacks against his country in return for free reign to gather energy. Of course, Starscream had a double-cross in play, as [[Rumble (G1)|Rumble]] and [[Frenzy (G1)|Frenzy]] were secretly creating earthquakes in Japan that the Decepticon could tap for energy, while the Japanese government was left to believe they were simply natural disasters. The Autobots soon got wise to the villain's schemes and headed for Japan to stop the Decepticons, but when a team of flying Autobots pursued the fleeing Starscream out over the ocean, none of them could have suspected that the Trigger's warp gate would suddenly burst out of the sea below them, accompanied by a mysterious ''second'' Starscream! {{storylink|Activation}}

This second Starscream spirited the original, along with the energy he had gathered from Japan, back to the Trigger out in space, where the original Starscream demanded to know the identity of the strange, phantasmal doppelganger. The second Starscream revealed that he was, in fact, the ghost of Starscream's own future self, who had inadvertently been transported back in time by the Trigger after he was destroyed in the future. Both the Decepticons and Autobots soon tracked down the Starscreams to the Trigger, but before they could act, Starscream's ghost, determined to alter history and ensure his own survival, used the purloined energy to fuse both present and future Starscreams together with the Trigger. The space station transformed into a monstrous, misshapen robot of mammoth proportions, which tore through the Autobot and Decepticon ranks, until the Trigger's human staff—including Makoto—activated a system purge, disconnecting most of the armored hull from Starscream's new Trigger-body. Megatron exploited this vulnerability to cripple Starscream with a point-blank cannon blast, but Starscream had one last trick up his sleeve, twisting the remains of his body into a giant warp gate and threatening to suck all the Transformers into a [[black hole]] in the depths of space. It took the combination of Optimus Prime and Megatron's power to finally destroy Starscream. In 2004, while the majority of the Decepticon forces under Megatron's command were focusing their attention on finally taking over all of Cybertron, Starscream was appointed leader of the small remaining Decepticon force operating within Earth's solar system. Exploiting the Autobots' lowered guard, the Decepticons struck with a plague of Cosmic Rust, disabling many of their foes and leaving Earth open to attack. However, with the aid of the [[Earth Defense Command]] and many of Earth's automotive companies, the Autobots were saved and rebuilt with powerful new "[[Binaltech]]" bodies. {{storylink|Story of Binaltech, Chapter 1}} With the strength of these new forms, the Autobots forced Starscream's Decepticons off Earth, {{storylink|Binaltech Is...}} but Starscream did not take the defeat lying down, and got back in touch with his old ally, Doctor Arkeville. Bribing Arkeville with the offer of access to [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]]'s mind-controlling [[cerebro-shell]] technology, Starscream had the doctor combine his old [[hypno-chip]] designs with the shells, which were then used to take control of several of the [[Binaltech Project]]'s human workers. With these humans under their sway, Starscream and Arkeville began co-opting Binaltech technology to rebuild the Decepticons into Binaltech forms. {{storylink|Arise! Evil Binaltechs}}

Now fighting the Autobots on more even footing, the Decepticons were nonetheless thrown into disarray when the time-tossed Decepticon [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]] used the [[Kronosphere]] time machine to alter the flow of history by teleporting Megatron and most of the Decepticons outside of time. {{storylink|Changing Lanes}} It is unclear if Starscream was among these Decepticons; Ravage specifically had Shockwave to be reborn in a Binaltech body to take up leadership of the remaining Decepticons, and Starscream was not heard from again until Megatron's forces returned some time later. {{storylink|Binal Time}}

When Starscream dared to challenge Beast Megatron's leadership, he was promptly blasted through a wall for his disobedience. {{storylink|Robot Masters (online comic)|Robot Masters online comic #2}} Seeking a means to dethrone this new leader, Starscream turned his attention to manipulating solitarium, and forged four weapons from the new mineral, which could be combined to create the "[[Arsenal Force]]" super-weapon. Starscream combined the weapons and unleashed the power of the Arsenal Force on Megatron... which, despite some impressive pyrotechnics, completely failed to injure him. During a later battle, when [[Victory Leo]] was attempting to go to the aid of [[Star Saber (Victory)|Star Saber]], Starscream appeared with [[Air Hunter]] and [[Wingstun]] to block his way. The original Megatron returned soon after, in the guise of "[[Reverse Convoy]]", {{storylink|Robot Masters (online comic)|Strategic Meeting: The Mysterious New Warrior}} and joined back up with the Decepticons. Starscream attacked Star Saber when the Autobot ventured out on a solo mission to investigate a mysterious explosion, striking him with a sneak attack from behind and easily avoiding his return fire. Even when Star Saber summoned Victory Leo and the pair combined into Victory Saber, Starscream reigned supreme in the fight, until Optimus Prime arrived and blasted him out of the sky. As Starscream plummeted towards the ground, he was snatched out of the air by Megatron, who arrived riding atop [[Gigant Bomb]]. Megatron dismissed Starscream as useless, and tossed him away before turning his attention to Prime. {{storylink|Fight! The Group of the Strongest Commanders!}}

Later, Beast Megatron discovered a large deposit of solitarium beneath [[New York City]] and ordered the Decepticons to tear the city apart. Starscream, [[Smokesniper]], [[Gigant Bomb]] and [[Wingstun]] did just that, blowing up buildings and razing a good portion of the Big Apple. Starscream was then shot out of the sky by another time-displaced Autobot, Reverse Convoy. Immediately after being killed by Galvatron at his own coronation in 2005, Starscream's spark found its way to the twilight realm of [[Limbo]], somewhere on the edge of life and death. He soon discovered that he was not alone: the sparks of many deceased Starscreams from all across the multiverse were also there. Sharing the stories of their deaths with one another, they formulated a plan to restore themselves to life, each one all the while secretly willing to sacrifice the others if it would benefit him. The scientific skills of several of the Starscreams were used to create a kind of crystal they termed a "[[flip-soul]]" that would enable their spirits to retake physical form in the real world—but predictably enough, all the Starscreams then began fighting for possession of the crystal. The primary Starscream was able to triumph over the others and took off with the crystal in hand, but was then seized about the legs by the other Starscream before he could get away. The victorious Starscream ingested the crystal, and in a flash, all the Starscreams disappeared from limbo, and reappeared in the material realm, several decades after the primary Starscream's death, floating in space near Earth. But where there had once been many Starscreams, now there was only one, giant Starscream, a fusion of all the different versions of the duplicitous Air Commander from throughout time and space. The fusion was not a complete one, however; each Starscream had left small fragments of themselves in Limbo, resulting in a giant Starscream who was not quite "complete", but more of a towering transparent "ghost". Dispatched on a mission through time and space to discover the identity of a mysterious saboteur who damaged [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletraan I]], the humanoid robot [[Teletraan 15]] was possessed by Starscream's ghost when the spectral Decepticon invaded her [[Transwarp cruiser]] in 2006. Starscream crashed the cruiser into the artificial satellite [[Nana]], where 15's superiors [[Teletraan 10]] and [[Ravage (G1)|Black Panther Man]] were stationed, and emerged from the wreckage to seize 10 around the throat. He introduced himself as the Decepticon Air Commander, prompting a shocked Black Panther Man to realize the true identity of the force possessing Teletraan 15. {{storylink|Starscream? Volume}} Teletraan 10 tried fighting back in true slapstick anime style, but Starscream just blasted her with eyebeams. The first Kiss Player Starscream discovered in the EDC headquarters was the young [[Atari Hitotonari]], who was using the ladies' room at the time. Starscream promptly possessed the girl, turning her EDC uniform black, but he couldn't understand why the giggling Kiss Players wouldn't take "Atari-scream"'s demands and threats seriously, even after he pulled a gun on them and fired into the air. Still possessing Atari, Starscream found himself unable to possess other Transformers that possessed [[Spark|sparks]], and forced her to seek out his old ally, the cybernetic scientist Doctor Arkeville. Arkeville built a [[Starscream (G1)/toys#Masterpiece|new body]] for Starscream converted from a stolen fighter jet, into which Atari transferred his spirit with a kiss. In 2010, Starscream's ghost teamed up with the [[Quintesson|Quintessons]], who built him a powerful new body. This new body, equipped with attacks such as "Right Arm Decepticon Gun" and the "Revolver Laser", was created using a combination of Optimus Prime's and Megatron's designs. The result was [[Guiltaur]].

Guiltaur joined the Decepticons and quickly became Galvatron's right-hand man (literally—in, like, 5 seconds). Galvatron tricked Rodimus Prime into engaging him in a one-on-one battle in which Guiltaur faked defeat. When Rodimus least suspected it, Guiltaur attacked and laid the smack down. Galvatron complimented Guiltaur on his power and loyalty, and instinctively, Guiltaur beat the crap out of Galvatron and declared his ambition to take over the Decepticons. Rodimus Prime and Galvatron called a truce and joined forces to defeat Guiltaur. They wrecked him something fierce, destroying his body and forcing out Starscream's ghost. His errant spark still wandering throughout time and space, Starscream's ghost found his way into a [[Henkei! Henkei! (franchise)|parallel universe]], where he immediately began sowing his usual brand of terror. Possessing this new world's native Octane, he attacked [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], but was taken down by [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]]. Undeterred, Starscream's ghost simply departed the fallen Decepticon's body and contemplated which Autobot to possess next. {{storylink|Mirage's Rebirth}}

After defeating Mirage, however, Starscream discarded the notion of possessing an Autobot, and decided to turn his attention to taking out this world's Megatron instead. Pulling his old coronation cape and [[Transformer clothing|crown]] out of nowhere, he took off for the Decepticon base, but was immediately blasted through the chest by Megatron as soon as he arrived. Naturally, the blast had no effect on his ghostly form, greatly intriguing Megatron. {{storylink|Starscream's Ambition}}

Megatron quickly deduced that this was not his world's Starscream, and sent Astrotrain and Onslaught against him, but Starscream's ghost simply possessed Onslaught and began rampaging. Mirage and Ironhide arrived in the middle of the battle to try and help take out Starscream, but then, while Starscream was in the midst of ranting about possessing the body of this world's Starscream, a portal opened above the combatants and disgorged [[Skids (G1)|Skids]] and [[Screech (Generations)|Screech]], a pair of dimension-hopping "Quantum Operatives" from Starscream's home universe, who had come to take him back there. While these two newcomers were keeping Starscream distracted, Mirage used his illusion-casting powers to create a hologram of Galvatron, terrifying the spectral Decepticon and causing him to flee the universe. {{storylink|Starscream's New Body}}
