Starscream proposes a truce with Megatron, but the Decepticon leader remains suspicious.

Synopsis
Atop the Decepticon warship, Megatron asks Starscream what he seeks in return for the Omega Keys, his answer being that he wishes to once more become a Decepticon. While Megatron points out that Dreadwing is now his second-in-command, Starscream insists he will keep to his place. Skeptical, Megatron has Knock Out extracted from the wall so that he can connect Megatron and Starscream with a cortical psychic patch.

By rummaging through Starscream's memories, Megatron intends to find what really drives him, and first reviews the events surrounding the space bridge explosion. Knock Out monitors the mental images with interest... especially when he sees Starscream do a victory jig. Megatron watches various instances of Starscream insisting on his leadership: the time he made a bunch of clones to assassinate Megatron; and when he tried to make a deal with Airachnid to terminate Megatron. Starscream claims he was half-crazed with energon deficiency at the time, but Megatron is unconvinced. Starscream insists he always had Megatron's best interests at heart, like removing the Dark Energon from his body so his mind did not become corrupted by it. Replaying Starscream's monologue during the time when Megatron was trapped underground, Megatron suggests Starscream refrain from thinking out loud in the future. He also drops the hint that if Starscream fails to be convincing, it'll likely end in Starscream's termination.

Starscream claims being beaten is enough to bring him back into line and tries to play up his own generosity by recalling the time when he provided Megatron with Cliffjumper's corpse for experimentation, and his use of his wits in dealing with the Autobots. Megatron points out his wits are usually insufficient to compensate for his arrogance: when he faced Optimus Prime while charged up on Dark Energon; or when he tried to use the Energon Harvester on Bulkhead. The revelation that MECH took Starscream's T-Cog greatly amuses Megatron, though Starscream is hoping that that might be restored to him in exchange for the Omega Keys—after all, he usually transforms with such style. He points out that at the time he deserted the Decepticon cause, he was not being made to feel particularly welcome there, despite apparently learning his place. Megatron does not believe Starscream's change of heart at the time would have lasted, and replays a discussion between Starscream and Knock Out while Megatron was lying in a coma in the sick bay. In the real world, Knock Out starts to realize that Starscream's memories are going to be equally incriminating to himself. Panicking, he comes up with a plan to disconnect the patch, trapping Megatron in Starscream's mind.

As Knock Out goes to unplug Megatron, Dreadwing stops him and he is forced to make up an excuse. Megatron's psychic interrogation of Starscream continues, and while Starscream claims that not even Dreadwing may have been a "perfect" replacement as his second-in-command, Megatron points out at least Dreadwing and his departed brother Skyquake were loyal. Starscream's memories of Skyquake's death and revival through Dark Energon are replayed, and he recalls how Skyquake was left in an undead state in some dimensional nether-realm. This revelation comes as a shock to Dreadwing, who is still watching in the lab. Megatron announces that Starscream will be allowed to rejoin the Decepticon forces proper, as they must be working as one unit if Cybertron is to be properly restored, a fact also addressed to the watching Knock Out. Knock Out realizes that Dreadwing is no longer standing behind him. Dreadwing stands on the outer hull of the Nemesis and aims a scream of rage at the sky.

Notes
Animation and technical errors
* When Knock Out is looking around the lab to see Dreadwing is gone, the tables are empty, when Megatron and Starscream should be visible on them.

Continuity errors
* Starscream was not present when Skyquake was trapped in an alternate dimension in "Shadowzone", nor was that fact ever made clear to him or any other Decepticon. While it is obvious that Skyquake lost his arm (since it attacked Starscream), Starscream shouldn't have such precise knowledge of his fate (unless he read the script or something).
* Megatron tells Starscream to 'keep that to yourself', referring to Skyquake being trapped in an alternate dimension, as though he was unaware that both Knockout and Dreadwing are watching. Later on he turns directly to address Knockout.
* Speaking of which, how did he know Knockout was there? Did they put a camera in Starscream's head too???

Continuity notes
* This is the first truly Decepticon-focused episode, with no Autobots appearing outside of flashbacks.
* This is also a clip show focusing on Starscream, so virtually every Starscream-relevant episode is revisited.
* Dreadwing learns of Starscream's attempt to revive Skyquake as a zombie minion in "Shadowzone", as well as his imprisonment in an alternate dimension at the end of that episode.
* Megatron tells Dreadwing to free Knock Out from the wall of the Nemesis, which occurred in the previous episode.

Transformers references
Real-world references
*When the Vehicons are hailing Starscream, he does a hilarious dance routine, with his final move being an impression of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever.

Trivia
* This is the second clip episode, the first being "Grill". Interestingly enough, in both episodes only four characters appear outside of flashbacks.
* This is the first episode to feature humans after three episodes which didn't, albeit only in flashbacks. This is also the first episode to not feature any Autobots outside of flashbacks.
* Megatron's mental projection has his original arm, not the dead Prime's arm, just like in the previous episode.
* For being clever enough to engineer a plan to successfully steal all four Omega Keys, Starscream didn't really think through his plan to regain Megatron's favor. He went in with no insurance policy to make sure Megatron didn't just simply scrap him and take the keys instead.
* So, uh... how did they get Knock Out out of the wall? And how did he expect to get put back into it?
* Starscream's got sweet dance moves!
:—Megatron, swatting two flies in one hit

Did they put a camera in Starscream's head?

Jack learns more about Optimus Prime's history on Cybertron while the Autobots continue their battle at the Earth's core.

Synopsis
As he leads the Autobots further toward Earth's core, Megatron is again seized by a vision of the planet exploding. He notes how Unicron's strength grows ever greater and continues on. Arcee and Optimus Prime both voice their mistrust of the Decepticon leader, though they have no choice but to follow him. Unbeknownst to them, several strange, mechanical creatures observe the intruders into their dark domain.

Back at base, Ratchet and the humans watch a report that outlines how the planet's chaotic weather continues to spiral out of control. Despite June's efforts to lighten the mood, Fowler insists that something must be done—even if it means contacting his associates at the Pentagon. Fowler makes known his uneasiness about teaming up with Megatron, but Ratchet surprises the humans by explaining how such a situation has happened before. Ratchet relates how Optimus Prime and Megatron were once close friends, in the twilight hours of Cybertron's Golden Age.

[[Image:OneShallRise3-corresponding.jpg|left|thumb|250px|Once, I called you "Brother".<br>
Once, I thought the chance to make you laugh<br>
Was all I ever wanted...<br>
And even now,<br>
I wish that God had chose another.<br>
Serving as your foe on His behalf<br>
Is the last thing that I wanted...!]]
The great Autobot leader was once named Orion Pax, a simple clerk in the Iacon Hall of Records. Learning of Cybertron's past, Orion grew concerned about the corruption affecting high places and the state of inequity in society. He became inspired by the revolutionary words of Megatronus, a gladiator who took his name from one of the thirteen original Primes. Megatronus gained a loyal following through his radical and innovative actions, Soundwave chief among their number. Over time, Megatronus became a mentor figure to Orion Pax and chose to shorten his name as he left the gladiatorial arena for the political one. Megatron appeared before the High Council, voicing his ideas for shaping a new Cybertron by violent means, and demanded to be named the next Prime. Orion protested against Megatron's suggestions before the Council, moving their sparks and minds as he unknowingly revealed himself to be the one worthy of the title. Megatron severed his ties to Orion and the Council, taking his "Decepticon" followers to begin the war that consumed Cybertron and vowing to claim the legendary Matrix of Leadership for himself. Hoping to reverse the damage that had poisoned the planet, Orion journeyed to Cybertron's Core, where he found himself before the spark of Primus, the creator of all Cybertronians. Primus sensed the purity of Orion's own spark and bestowed upon him the legendary Matrix, transforming him into Optimus Prime.

In the present, Miko and Jack question Optimus's plan to give the Matrix to the Earth's core, asking what could possibly stop Megatron from attempting to claim it for himself now. Ratchet darkly replies that Megatron only intends to save the Earth so that he may conquer it at a later date.

As they near Unicron's spark, Bulkhead begins to feel the draining effects of the Dark Energon. Bumblebee and Arcee help him a short way across the catwalks, but Megatron soon comes to a halt ahead with the realization that Unicron is preparing to expel them. A huge number of Unicron's drones suddenly swarm into view, surrounding Megatron and the Autobots. They engage the drones in fierce battle, blasting and slashing through their attackers. Arcee is knocked to a lower level, not long before the Dark Energon clouds Bulkhead's vision. He stumbles from the catwalk but manages to grab hold of the edge, and is seized by Bumblebee before he can tumble to his death. Optimus and Megatron fight back-to-back, managing to hold their own against the drones in a spectacular display of effective—if uneasy—teamwork. Bumblebee struggles to hold onto Bulkhead, who insists that the scout lets him go. Optimus seizes Bulkhead just as Bumblebee loses his grip, and hauls him up to safety. As the group quickly becomes overwhelmed, Arcee hitches a ride on one of the drones to catch up with the others and beat a swift retreat with them.

Aboard the Nemesis, Airachnid outlines the questionable nature of their leader's recent behavior. Knock Out asks whether she is suggesting that they abandon Lord Megatron. Airachnid explains how Megatron's undetectable signal implies that he is either offline or at the mercy of Unicron—neither scenario being in the best interests of the Decepticons. She suggests an exodus from Earth, and receives no protests from the surrounding Vehicons. However, her order to retreat to Regulon Four is denied by Soundwave, who silently challenges her authority. When he refuses her demand to step aside, she leaps to attack him. Soundwave easily blocks every one of her blows, before lifting her clean into the air. He hurls her back, deploying Laserbeak to stun Airachnid in a sudden sneak attack. Pinned under Soundwave's foot, much to Knock Out's amusement, Airachnid relinquishes command to the intelligence officer.

Back in the Autobot base, Ratchet notes he has lost the others' communication links and life signals, most likely caused by interference from the electromagnetic anomalies. Miko asks how they are supposed to know when the others are ready for pickup if contact is impossible, but Ratchet is prevented from responding by the sound of Jack tapping the GroundBridge key against a railing. Ratchet reveals that the object is actually the Key to Vector Sigma—one of Cybertron's most precious relics. Ratchet then realizes that Optimus entrusted the key to Jack because he did not plan on returning from the planet's core.

Megatron is gripped by yet another painful vision of Unicron whilst he and the Autobots are backed into an enclosed chamber by the attacking drones. Unicron orders him to destroy Optimus. Instead, Megatron saves the Autobot leader by blasting an oncoming drone. He then indicates a closed doorway nearby, stating that Unicron's spark lies just beyond. He explains that, to pass through, they must fool Unicron into believing that they pose no danger, and moves his Dark Energon-infused chest up to the door. It opens in response, and Optimus orders the others to remain outside and provide cover fire while he and Megatron advance.

The passageway beyond leads directly into Unicron's spark chamber, where Optimus prepares to expose the Matrix within his chest. Unicron's spark reacts, striking both invaders with its energy. Unicron again orders Megatron to kill Optimus, forcing him to unsheathe his blade and approach the weakened Prime. Megatron struggles against him, declaring himself to be under the command of no-one. His resistance provokes only an onslaught of pain and a furious reaction from the Chaos Bringer.

The volcano outside erupts violently, and the ground enclosing the Autobot base begins to quake. Ratchet tells the humans to take cover, and he moves to shield them from falling debris.

Unicron's spark adopts the appearance of a face as Megatron is seemingly freed from his control. Optimus calls upon the power of the Matrix of Leadership, but hesitates as Unicron possesses Megatron's body in a veil of purple flame and declares his own invincibility. Optimus cuts short Unicron's desire to pull the Earth into chaos, and he rises to his feet as he becomes surrounded by a brilliant blue light. Optimus fires the power of the Matrix from his chest directly into Unicron's spark, the resulting wave of energy knocking Megatron back off his feet. His energy drained, Optimus falls to his knees, and Unicron's spark emits a final wail of pain before vanishing into oblivion.

The drones outside suddenly fall from the air, lifeless. The volcano, along with all of the Earth's other natural phenomena, subside back to normality. Ratchet and the humans watch as the monitors flicker online, rejoicing as their team's life signals are all safely re-established. Aboard the Nemesis, however, Soundwave also detects the signature of the Decepticon leader.

Megatron rights himself in Unicron's now-empty spark chamber, inspecting Optimus's steaming body for a moment before unsheathing his blade. Optimus gazes blearily up at the approaching Decepticon, then addresses him as "Megatronus" and asks where they are. Surprised, Megatron retracts his weapon and helps the Autobot to his feet. Bumblebee, Bulkhead and Arcee soon burst through the wall to assist, but Optimus does not recognise them. A GroundBridge suddenly opens nearby; Megatron claims that the Autobots are their sworn enemies and provides cover fire as Optimus heads for the vortex. Optimus blankly meets Bumblebee's devastated gaze for a split second before disappearing through the Bridge. Megatron follows, leaving the shocked Autobots alone in the empty chamber.

Ratchet GroundBridges the team back to base, but is anxious to see that Optimus is not with them. They explain that Optimus is still alive, but did not even know his own name. Ratchet realizes that surrendering the Matrix of Leadership caused their leader to lose not only the wisdom of the Primes, but his own memories as well.

Knock Out and the other Decepticons, minus Airachnid, welcome Megatron back aboard the Nemesis. Megatron steps aside to allow Optimus through, and Breakdown automatically moves to attack. Megatron halts him, insisting that this is no way to treat a "long-lost comrade", and declares that Orion Pax is one of them.

Notes
Animation and technical errors
*All of the natural disasters around the world abruptly stop when Unicron is beaten. While it might make sense for the earthquakes to stop, tidal waves wouldn't just suddenly fall apart. Forward momentum doesn't just vanish. Similar problems occur with the tornadoes dissipating and the sky clearing.
*At the Earth's core, the Autobots should experience very little gravity, as the total mass of Earth would be reasonably equally distributed around them and therefore the pull of gravity would be cancelled out.
*Despite entering the tunnel to Unicron's spark chamber only a few seconds before Optimus, Megatron still manages a very hefty lead. By the time Optimus navigates the tunnel that leads into the spark chamber, Megatron is already inside, standing in front of Unicron's spark.
*After defeating Unicron, both Megatron and Optimus are knocked unconscious: Megatron on his back and Optimus on the ground facing away from the other. However, when we see them wake up later, Megatron is on his stomach and Optimus is facing him now.

Continuity errors
*Ratchet's statement that Megatron started the war after not being made Prime contradicts the history given in "Darkness Rising, Part 1", where Megatron is said to have split from Optimus during the war. Optimus could have believed that the war began with the initial movement of Megatronus, or Ratchet could be bringing continuity closer to Exodus.
*Bulkhead is the only Autobot visibly affected by the Dark Energon; previously, Arcee felt dizzy from even a tiny amount on her arm.<!--THIS IS NOT THE SPACE FOR YOUR SPECULATION.-->

Continuity notes
*The entire backstory given by Ratchet is an adaptation of the first half of Transformers: Exodus. Plot elements were changed, such as Orion Pax becoming Optimus when he found the Matrix of Leadership, as opposed to when he was assigned the position by the Cybertron High Council. Notably, although the Dark Energon infection of Cybertron's core as seen in Exodus and War for Cybertron is made clear to have happened, the episode only refers to it as "poison", probably to avoid highlighting the incongruity this creates with the characters' lack of familiarity with the substance back at the start of the series.
*Optimus's blade is still broken after the episode "One Shall Fall".
*The tail end of Unicron's final speech (while controlling Megatron's body) echoes Megatron's own words at the end of War for Cybertron Chapter 1: "By my will alone shall Cybertron be restored!"
*if Airachnid had used her webbing, her duel with Soundwave would probably lasted a lot longer, and be a whole lot more interesting.

Transformers references
*Optimus Prime was originally known as Orion Pax, much like his namesake in the episode "War Dawn",
*The Key to Vector Sigma first appeared in The Transformers episode "The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1" and later featured prominently in the first season of Beast Machines.
*Optimus calls upon the Matrix to "light our darkest hour".
*For once, Optimus is the one who gets to say he "still functions", rather than Megatron.
*Airachnid wishes to "set course for Regulon Four".
*Unicron's mind-control on Megatron to destroy Optimus Prime is similar to how Unicron kept torturing Galvatron into destroying Hot Rod.
*When Unicron finally succeeds in possessing Megatron, the latter's body is enveloped in a purple, flame-like aura. This hearkens back to another of Unicron's servants, as well as the power-up sequence of a different Megatron.

Trivia
*This episode aired in Singapore on October 4, 2011, again preceding its American showing.
*Jack is clearly taking very good care of that Key Optimus gave him...by idly tapping it against a railing.
*This is the first time we've seen Soundwave "get his hands dirty". With how easily he trounces Airachnid, that's probably a good thing for the Autobots.
*According to the flashbacks, Megatron's optics are blue, his fingers, eyebrows, and shoulders less pointy, and his feet are also rather flat, until he is rejected by the Council and storms out angrily, obtaining the sharp teeth and red eyes.
*Fowler hugs June. Make of that what you will.
*Once more, the Thirteen Original Primes make an appearance, this time as statue busts in the walls of the High Council's chamber.
*Unlike all other Autobots thus far in the cartoon, Optimus has a distinct Cybertronian robot form, with different kibble, in the flashbacks. This is also true of Soundwave to an extent - in the image of him standing by Megatronus at the beginning of the latter's movement, his limbs are a fair bit bulkier than his modern form.
*A behind-scenes Internet video released by The Hub featured the voice actors recording the "Megatron was an Autobot? Optimus was a 'Con?" exchange, leading many (surprised) fans to believe this was truly the case.
When Smokescreen is captured, he learns the location of the Omega Key and attempts to retrieve all the other stolen keys.

Synopsis
Smokescreen recovers consciousness to find himself on a slab in the Decepticon warship with Knock Out standing over him. Megatron demands the final relic, pointing out Soundwave's work decrypting the Iacon database has revealed an image of Smokescreen, but Smokescreen is merely confused as to what it means. Knock Out scans the Autobot, and finds the last relic is hidden inside.

The other Autobots, meanwhile, realize that the Decepticons must have decoded the last coordinates and speculate that Smokescreen holds the Omega Key inside him, largely due to being installed within him while unconscious by Alpha Trion.

Knock Out advances on the alarmed Smokescreen with a rotary saw, only to reveal he's actually going to use the phase shifter to do the operation. He reaches inside Smokescreen and soon has the Omega Key in hand. Smokescreen refuses to tell the Decepticons what the Omega Keys are, but Megatron has ways of finding out.

Starscream ruminates on the one Omega Key he possesses, while talking to his dead clone. Imagining himself in charge of a reborn Cybertron, he quickly realizes that he doesn't have the resources he would need to rule it.

Megatron listens in on Prime's briefing about the Omega Keys, thanks to a cortical psychic patch hooked up to Smokescreen. Once they've learned all they need, Knock Out unplugs the pair and Megatron orders Knock Out to use the patch to find the location of the Autobot base so they can retrieve the other Omega Keys. After Megatron leaves to put their new key in a safe place, Knock Out moves in, only for Smokescreen to grab the phase shifter attached to his wrist and uses it to free himself. The pair grapple until Smokescreen manages to pull the device from his opponent's wrist, leaving Knock Out embedded in a bulkhead. Though Knock Out points out Smokescreen has no means of escape from the ship, Smokescreen has plans of his own. Through use of the phase shifter, he manages to catch up with Megatron near the storage area, where he snatches back the Omega Key and takes the one in storage as well. The Decepticons attempt to stop him, but their firepower passes straight through him. He eventually reaches the outer hull, only to be confronted by Megatron. With no other choice, the Autobot bails the ship.

At the Autobot base, Ratchet picks up Smokescreen's signal, but has trouble locking on due to the fact that Smokescreen is plummeting through the air. Harried by Vehicons, Smokescreen drops towards the GroundBridge Ratchet opens, only to be knocked off-course by Megatron. He uses the phase shifter to pass through the ground. Moments later, Megatron lands and demands his subordinates search the wreckage. Smokescreen bridges back to base, where the Autobots congratulate him, but wonder where the fourth key is. Their query is answered a moment later when they get a message from Starscream offering the key in return for the replacement of his T-Cog. Having considered it, Optimus Prime decides it's too important to not take Starscream up on his offer.

Optimus, Ratchet and Bulkhead bridge to a forested location and approach Starscream, only to find him apparently dead. It is, of course, just the dead clone, as the real Starscream uses his Red Energon to nip through the GroundBridge into the Autobot base. Moving too fast to be seen, he is tempted at first to finish off the slow-moving Autobots, but goes back to finding the Omega Keys first. The Autobots in the field realize they've been deceived just as Starscream blows open the vault holding the keys. Though Optimus orders Arcee to close the GroundBridge, it is too slow to prevent Starscream from escaping the base. He stops to mock Optimus, Ratchet and Bulkhead, only for the Red Energon to wear off right at the worst possible moment. After firing a missile at the Autobots, he frantically opens his own GroundBridge and escapes back to the Harbinger, much to Optimus's despair. Though Bulkhead and Ratchet believe they can get the keys back Optimus grimly announces the fate of Cybertron is now in Starscream's hands.

Despite Knock Out's pleas, Megatron refuses to release him from the wall. Megatron and Dreadwing return to the bridge, where they find Starscream who has come with a peace offering of all four Omega Keys.

Notes
Animation and technical errors
*Megatron's vehicle mode still has his fusion cannon, despite the arm it was attached to being removed. Furthermore, if one watches Megatron's transformation scene, it's blocked off by smoke, making it impossible to see what exactly happens with his fusion cannon and his different arm.
*Smokescreen's momentum suddenly disappears upon phasing through the ground. Based on where he exits, he couldn't have landed much lower than the Vehicons did. Speaking of momentum, how exactly were the Autobots planning to catch Smokescreen when he came out of the GroundBridge at terminal velocity? Maybe it's part of the "intuitiveness" that allows for not phasing through floors and simultaneously reaching through objects and grabbing parts of them/items inside them?
*An early external shot of the Nemesis has its "eyes" and running lights illuminated in Dark Energon purple; later in the episode they are their normal red.
*When Knock Out removes the Omega Key from within Smokescreen, the Autobot's chest appears to be rising and falling rapidly much like a human's would when breathing harshly.

Continuity errors
*Given how easy it was for the Decepticons to locate the Omega Key within Smokescreen, it seems odd that the Autobots would not have made the same discovery long before now. Surely at least a basic medical workup would have been conducted upon him joining the team to check for any irregularities. To be fair, though, the Decepticons have access to a full Cybertronian medical bay, while Ratchet has to make due with what he can cobble together.
*The bots in Smokescreen's memory are in different places than in "Alpha/Omega". In that episode, Smokescreen and Rachet are on Optimus' right side, and Arcee, Bulkhead and Bumblebee are on his left. In this episode, Bulkhead and Rachet are on his right, Bee is in the middle, and Arcee and Smokescreen are on his left.
* Isn't the Nemesis shielded so no one can ground-bridge into it? If so, then how did Starscream get in? (He couldn't have been flying.)

Continuity notes
*This episode continues from the previous one, starting not long after Smokescreen's capture and subsequent restraint.
*The cortical psychic patch is used to extract information from Smokescreen, having been used previously in "Sick Mind" and "Out of the Past".
*The scene which Megatron watches in Smokescreen's mind is from "Alpha/Omega".
*Starscream lists off numerous items he's acquired or stolen in previous episodes; the Omega Key from "Hard Knocks", the processed Red Energon (which he acquired in "New Recruit" and refined in "Hard Knocks"), his GroundBridge remote first seen in "Triangulation", his murdered clone from "Armada", and the T-cog he scavenged from said clone in "Triangulation".
*Starscream previously referred to himself as an "Emperor of Destruction" in "Masters & Students".
*Ratchet recalls Starscream's lack of a T-cog, which he learned about in "Crossfire". Starscream lost his in "Operation Bumblebee, Part 2".
* Once again, Starscream sends an embedded message to the Autobots, asking Ratchet to bring a medical kit. This time around, it didn't work out very well for the Autobots.
*Starscream still seems to be holding a grudge against Arcee from the events of "Partners", given his comments about gutting the Autobots start with her.
*While Starscream is looking for the Omega Keys in the Autobots' Vault, he comes across Airachnid in stasis, which occurred back in "Armada". The last time they interacted was in "Crossfire".
*This is the second time that Megatron abandons one of his own soldiers as a form of punishment. The first was Breakdown in "Operation: Breakdown", whom was rescued by Bulkhead and allowed back.
*Even though the Star Saber was destroyed in "Alpha/Omega", Optimus still wears the hilt Ratchet made him.

Transformers references
* One of Starscream's self-proclaimed titles as the new ruler of Cybertron is "Emperor of Destruction". He also refers to himself as Cybertron's Overlord, which originated in the Marvel UK story State Games as the pre-war rulers of Cybertron.
*This marks the second time that a Starscream managed to successfully steal three important planetary keys from the Autobots.

Real-world references
*A brain pan is real. Scientists use it to study brains of corpses without the confines of a skull.
*Arcee uses the human phrase of sounding like a broken record.

Trivia
*This episode explains why the phase shifter doesn't phase the user through everything, neatly tying up the issues of how it can be used with such versatility.
*While in Smokescreen's mind, Megatron's avatar has his own arm rather than the Prime's arm that he's since attached.
*This is the third episode in a row where no humans appear, the first episode in the series where we get to hear Optimus scream in frustration, and the first episode since "Darkness Rising, Part 1" to show a Vehicon in automobile mode.
*Both Optimus and Megatron scream at the loss of the Omega Keys.
*Looks like Bulkhead finally gets to see Optimus "lose his cool."
*It would seem Megatron cannot tell which of his own soldiers are fliers or ground troopers. Then again, there's not much difference in appearance.
Fowler explains a bit about MECH and wonders if some of MECH's men are special forces like Silas. Under further questioning, Fowler relates more about the Autobots and their war, and his own involvement in helping Team Prime. Bryce asks him to run through the identities of the Autobots in Team Prime, and comes to the death of Cliffjumper. Bryce reiterates that all they have to go on regarding Optimus Prime's recent defection to the Decepticons is Fowler's report, and the current debriefing is a result of concerns about the potential danger the Autobots pose, with the possibility of a military tribunal later and potentially the termination of Team Prime.
Fowler insists that the Autobots are very careful about protecting humans, but lets slip about the kids. He quickly covers the mistake by claiming they're civilians working with the Autobots and valuable team members, carefully leaving out the fact that they're minors. Bryce seems mollified, but asks why Megatron hasn't been terminated yet, which leads Fowler to mention Unicron. Bryce decides that Fowler needs a psychological evaluation, though after Fowler clarifies that he didn't say "unicorn", the evaluation is called off. Fowler also relays how both Starscream and Airachnid have gone rogue, and that the Autobots have gained valuable intel from the former. Though he says Optimus thinks Dreadwing could be converted, Fowler doesn't agree. When questioned about Optimus's recent defection, Fowler is confident that Optimus is firmly an Autobot. He mentions the current Decepticon hunt for ancient Transformer artifacts, and has Optimus himself look through the window and converse with Bryce. General Bryce is convinced and dismisses Fowler.
Notes
Continuity notes
* Being a clip show, this episode shows bits from virtually every episode of the series up to this point.
* Like Miko in "One Shall Rise, Part 1", General Bryce mistakes "Unicron" for "unicorn".
* Fowler's dialogue makes a reference to the title of "Loose Cannons".
* This episode finally explains why Agent Fowler doesn't wear a flight suit.

Transformers references
* Fowler notes that Bumblebee got his voicebox torn out during the "war for Cybertron".
* At one point, Fowler refers to Nemesis Prime as a "knockoff".
* Fowler refers to the Autobots as "autonomous robotic organisms"

Trivia
* As previously revealed on the package of the Ultimate Opponents Entertainment Pack, Silas's real name is Leland Bishop. Newly revealed in this episode is his former military rank of Colonel.
* Aside from all the clips shown in this episode, the only Transformer appearing physically in this episode is Optimus Prime.
* A shot of Airachnid screaming Jack's name from "Predatory" is played without dialog, presumably to avoid having to pay Gina Torres an additional fee.
* We finally get an explanation for why Fowler can fly a jet without a flight suit. At some point (most likely before "Darkness Rising, Part 1"), Ratchet modified the air pressure regulators in Fowler's jet. Fowler also makes a comment about the jet being a VTOL, which explains the maneuvers it made in "Loose Cannons".
* Interestingly enough, when Bryce asks Fowler for a headcount of the Autobots, Wheeljack isn't mentioned despite Fowler's knowledge of his presence on Earth (he even had a face-to-face discussion with Jackie!). Maybe he thinks he left Earth? That, or he took Jackie's statement of "I'm not one of Optimus Prime's people" seriously.
* General Bryce mentions that the "five-stars" are upset. In real life, the five-star rank is not currently active in the United States military, being last awarded in 1950 to General Omar Bradley.
* The camera is shown to be on its last battery throughout the episode. The battery promptly runs out as soon as Optimus Prime appears.
Synopsis
What’s this? A blanket of snow over the Ark's volcano? The Autobots and Spike engaged in a snowball fight? In July? In the middle of the desert? Something is amiss with the world’s weather. According to Teletraan I's scans, temperatures are 40 degrees below normal and falling rapidly.

Somewhere in the Arctic Circle, the Decepticons have tapped a crystal shaft leading directly to the Earth's core to siphon the planet's heat energy into energon cubes. While excavating the icy caverns surrounding the crystal, Rumble uncovers a Transformer frozen in the ice. Starscream recognizes it as his old colleague Skyfire.

The Autobots finally pinpoint the source of the Earth’s energy drain, and Teletraan I confirms Decepticon activity surrounding a crystal outgrowth in the Arctic Circle. Optimus Prime hastily assembles an assault team, and they roll out, with Spike and Sparkplug accompanying.

The Decepticons have hauled the frozen titan out of the ice and proceed to repair it. Starscream explains his past: millions of years ago, before the final falling out between the Autobots and Decepticons, Starscream and Skyfire were both explorers. They were charting an unknown planet, Earth, when a storm separated the two and Skyfire was lost.

Skyfire awakens and Megatron welcomes him to the Decepticon cause. Though Skyfire is grateful for having been thawed out, he shows doubts about being a warrior rather than a scientist. He commits to the cause out of loyalty to Starscream. When the Autobots arrive in the Arctic, Skyfire targets them for destruction.

Skyfire opens fire, scattering the Autobots. Spike tumbles through the ice into the arctic waters. Sparkplug pulls him out, but they are trapped on an ice floe. They cry out for help. Skyfire is intrigued by the new lifeforms and tries to befriend them, not realizing that they are terrified by Decepticons. Spike and Sparkplug try to explain that it’s the Decepticons that are the true monsters. The naïve Skyfire takes the humans to Megatron to prove the Decepticons' good intentions. Megatron and Starscream promptly imprison Spike and Sparkplug behind bars of ice, and plan their execution, leaving Skyfire troubled.

Optimus leads his Autobot team into the icy caverns, but a cave-in splits the team in two. Prime's group finds the humans and frees them, while the other team—including Ironhide, Ratchet, Hound and Gears—find the crystal shaft tap. Megatron discovers this second group and has his soldiers capture them. To test Skyfire's loyalty, Starscream orders Skyfire to execute the captives. Skyfire refuses, and in a fit of rage, Starscream blasts his old friend. Starscream then blasts the prisoners to pieces.

Well, not really. Once again, one of Hound's holograms has saved the day, creating the illusion of blasted Autobot parts. When Starscream departs, Hound drops the illusion. An ailing Skyfire awakens and is pleased to see the Autobots functioning. The disparate Autobot teams unite as Ratchet repairs the fallen titan. Laserbeak spies Ratchet's work and reports to Megatron. The Decepticon leader chews out Starscream for failing to kill the prisoners. Megatron orders his soldiers to attack.

As the battle progresses, Prime and Megatron each grab shards of crystals and engage in a duel. Skyfire appears on the battlefield, and Megatron orders him to attack Prime. Skyfire refuses, and proudly declares himself an Autobot, attacking Megatron and his Decepticons instead.

The battle takes to the air as Starscream and Skyfire engage in an aerial dogfight. A midair collision sends Skyfire out of control. In a last ditch effort, his blasts bury the crystal, but Skyfire crashes into the ice. The Autobots mourn Skyfire’s heroic sacrifice.
Animation or technical glitches
* Jazz laughs at Spike's "I get the drift" line in Cliffjumper's voice.
* His voice apparently stolen by Jazz, Cliffjumper oophs and grunts in a Don Messick voice as he bangs into a tree. It's similar to the "What does it instantly immobilize?" flub from the later episode "The Immobilizer".
* As Optimus Prime muses about how the heat from the Earth's core is being drained away, Gears can be seen in the background sitting in front of a console with a very small screen. But during the closeup of Gears, the screen is much larger. The screen also makes a mechanical whirring noise as the view pans across a native village, as if the screen itself were moving.
* While Megatron and Starscream are talking at the energon cube-filler machine, Reflector places an already-filled energon cube at the machine, seemingly to have it filled. In the same shot, another Reflector bot's chest is all gray.
* Rumble's mouth moves after Skywarp taunts him, but rather uncharacteristically, he doesn't actually say anything.
* As Starscream berates Skywarp and Rumble for standing around, Skywarp's cockpit fringe is gray instead of black, and Rumble's eyeband is gray.
* The first bit of Skyfire that's sticking out of the ice doesn't correspond to any actual part on his body.
* After Starscream melts away more of the ice, that first part of Skyfire is no longer sticking out.
* While watching the Sky Spy's footage, Spike describes a "weird light", but the screen shows nothing of the sort. The big, green, not-a-light crystal is plain as day, though.
* When the Autobots roll out, the background is moving far too quickly, making them appear to be sliding across frame while transforming. It doesn't help that they aren't drawn very well, either.
* Appearing / disappearing Autobots:
** Only Prime, Jazz, Ironhide and Hound are shown rolling out. Gears shows up in the convoy on the way to the north pole. Cliffjumper, Ratchet and Bumblebee finally show up when the group transforms in front of Skyfire.
* "Give him 50,000 volts" - Starscream's "collar" is red instead of gray.
* As Soundwave deploys the electrical device, his face is misdrawn with a strangely pointy faceplate, and his eyeband is colored gray instead of red.
* "I knew him once" - the tip of Starscream's gun turns the same blue as his glove as he gestures.
* In Skyfire's memory monitor, a distant shot shows Starscream looking like a short, dumpy version of Inferno.
* When Skyfire first wakes up and asks where he is, Starscream's mouth appears to be moving, but he isn't actually saying anything. In the same shot, the back of Thundercracker's head is white instead of black.
* The base of Megatron's fusion cannon is the same silver as his arm, as he introduces himself to Skyfire.
* "Hail Cybertron!" - Skyfire's face is white instead of gray.
* As Skyfire first takes aim at the Autobots, his Decepticon symbol is red.
* As the Autobots roll toward Skyfire in profile, Jazz's fenders are colored windshield blue.
* When the Autobots stop in front of Skyfire, they're tiny - maybe as tall as his feet.
* When Spike yells for help, one of Hound's laser blasts comes out of mid-air instead of his gun.

* When Skyfire picks up Spike and Sparkplug, his entire right arm, including his gun, is drawn as the Macross Valkyrie-styled arm from his original animation model.
* "I'll take you to Megatron, my leader" - red Decepticon symbol on Skyfire again.
* Spike and Sparkplug's fur hats are beige instead of brown as they look at each other in fear.
* In a rather odd shot set up, Skyfire is too big to fit into a cave that Megatron and Starscream stand in. He’s forced to peer through the cave’s opening.
* After Starscream shoots his hand, Skyfire has an extra line on his face that makes him look like an old man (the same trick later used to distinguish Hot Rod from his Rodimus Prime persona.) His arm jointing seems oddly drawn, as well.
* When Bumblebee tells Optimus that he can't find Ironhide and the others, the animation makes him look like he's floating a foot or two above the ground.
* Prime clearly drives into the caves without his trailer. When Bumblebee reports in, Prime does have his trailer. In the next shot, he lacks the trailer again. His smokestacks are rendered as thin red lines, too.
<!-- he backs half-way off-screen to turn around... and drives back on-screen with the trailer! ------- I SWEAR I remember this, but can't confirm it. - repowers **This error, native to the original broadcast release, was corrected by the Shout! Factory release. -->
** Later, during the big fight at the end, Prime's trailer appears again so he can use its weapons.
* Gears is missing his forearm as he and the others peer at the green crystal.
* "We'd better find Optimus and the others before..." Ironhide's backside is entirely dark gray; there should be some red and light gray.
* "With pleasure, Megatron!" The bridge of Starscream's nose is light gray; it should be dark gray.
* As Hound gets to his feet, he leaves a copy of his missile launcher behind, briefly giving him two launchers. In the same shot, Ratchet's mouth goes missing.
* In the wide shot of Ratchet repairing Skyfire, Skyfire's got a red Decepticon symbol yet again.
* Skywarp's nosecone is all orange as he transforms and takes off.
* Prime's bumper is yellow as he spins around to transform his trailer.
* Megatron's missing his back gun barrel as he spins 180 at the waist.
* Optimus is shown mouthing Megatron’s order to Skyfire (to destroy Optimus Prime!)
* Starscream fires strange cross-hatch lasers at Skyfire. As he swoops in, a purple Autobot symbol is briefly visible on his wing.
* Spike and Sparkplug are both shown mouthing Spike's "Belt him in the burners" line.
* As the Autobots cheer for Skyfire's apparent victory, Optimus Prime's whole torso is colored blue.
* Skyfire's thruster nozzles are white as he approaches the crystal.

Continuity errors
* This episode's basic premise is one of the most bizarre and scientifically ludicrous conceits ever created by the cartoon - namely, the idea that draining the energy of the Earth's core would somehow severely and instantly affect its climate, causing plummeting temperatures world wide. If internal heat generates the planet's climate, why would there be big frozen zones at the poles? Doesn't Earth actually have a big external heat source that would offset the devastating loss of this (infinitesimal) heat source?
<!-- I hate to admit it, but I'm wrong - Hound boldly declares that "the Earth'll heat up again". * Furthermore, the Autobots never actually solve the problem! They stop the Decepticons from draining the energy, but there's no indication that this actually corrects the Earth's temperature imbalance. -->
* Teletraan I says the global average temperature has dropped by 40 degrees. To put that in context, the average temperature was about 8 degrees less than the present day during the last ice age.
* What exactly do green crystals have to do with the Earth's core?
* Superhuman Spike:
** Spike not only survives (without bruising, or bleeding) a watermelon-sized snowball headshot (to the face) powerful enough to knock him off a cliff, but also rolling down said cliff with enough velocity to knock over several full-sized Autobots without so much as breaking a bone. In fact, he just gets up and is *smiling*!
**Spike falls and nearly drowns in Arctic water, and somehow is not overcome by hypothermia. It probably helps that both he and his clothes dry out about five seconds after being pulled out.
** Both Spike and Sparkplug seem none the worse for wear after being casually tossed onto solid ice by Starscream.
* Someone forgot that the Seekers have a pre-Earth design; in a flashback to millions of years ago, Starscream is shown transforming into his F-15 jet mode (millions of years before his arrival on Earth, or the invention of jets.) The script for the episode did call for a Cybertronian alternate mode, but evidently the animators didn't get the message.
* Skyfire/Starscream's little excursion occurred before the Cybertronian civil war even began. Yet when they fly to earth, the geography of the Americas reflects what it is today.
*The Autobots can apparently drive from North America to the Arctic in a fairly short amount of time.
* Just where did Skyfire get this whole "evil Autobots" notion, anyway? Did he miss that whole "conquer the universe" bit in Megatron's speech?
* Were Starscream and Skyfire really friends? Starscream seems to shoot his old friend and call him "Traitor!" quite a lot. Then again, Starscream is a royal jerk, although he did say that Skyfire could be 'Second In Command' when he became leader, which, on the whole, is probably the most respect anyone can get from him.
* Gears says that his group had better go find Optimus before they're discovered by the Decepticons. The group then stands around doing nothing until, sure enough, they're discovered by the Decepticons.

* Couldn't four Autobot prisoners overpower their captors (Starscream and Skyfire) with relative ease? Heck, Hound's still got his missile sitting there, ready to go!
* Starscream is apparently dumb enough to think that 2 piddly little null ray blasts are enough to reduce four Autobots to scrap.
* It's never adequately explained where Skyfire got an Autobot badge from. And he tears the old one off like it's made of paper.
* Why was Skyfire's whole sacrifice even necessary? Couldn't the Autobots have buried the crystal from the ground?

Rhino DVD release
* At the beginning of the episode, the snow falls upwards and many snow effects are missing.
* In many instances Skyfire's symbol is miscolored.
* Right after he wakes up, Skyfire has a red Decepticon insignia in his chest in one shot, before they actually imprint the symbol on him.
* When Starscream blasts Skyfire, the laser blast is missing.
* The chapter stops for this episode on the Rhino DVD are Opening / Snowbot / At the Arctic Circle / "Destruction to Autobots" / An Illusion / Skyfire is Gone

Continuity notes
* Aside from astroseconds, Transformers also use astrominutes as units of time.
* Gadgets and powers:
** Soundwave can transform his right forearm into a cylindrical electricity firing module capable of generating a million volts.
** Ratchet uses the same forearm-mounted laser scalpel that he had in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 2".
** Laserbeak uses his forehead-mounted microphone... to broadcast a signal.
** Megatron receives that signal with a flashing of his pectoral rectangle things, a trope that will show up again in "Countdown to Extinction".
** Megatron can rotate his lower torso 180 degrees, which makes for some cool hand-to-hand combat maneuvers.

* Prime’s Combat Deck cannons make a rare appearance in this episode, emerging from a non-transformed trailer.
* The first appearance of Skyfire, obviously.
* "We shall remember you, Skyfire!" Optimus solemnly vows. Yeah, especially next time we need a ride somewhere.

Real-world references
* "It's educational, kids!" - we get an appearance of the Aurora Borealis.
* Star Wars sound effects:
** Falcon engine burst as the Seekers transform and take off.
** Death Star super laser as they launch their attack a second later.
** Exploding X-Wing fighter (or an explosion aboard the Death Star) as the Autobots flee from Decepticon bombs.
** Clashing lightsabers as Ratchet gets blasted away from Skyfire.
** TIE Fighter roar as Skywarp and Thundercracker crash.
** Clashing lightsabers again as Prime knocks Megatron's cannon away.
** Falcon engine burst as Skyfire takes off.
** X-Wings and TIE Fighter as Skyfire aims for the crystal.

Japanese version
*The Japanese ordering of this episode places it toward the end of the series. This was done as it featured Skyfire prominently and with his toy being of Bandai design (and not sold in Japan as a Transformer), that caused some legal concerns amongst Takara (many of Skyfire's smaller scenes in other episodes were cut entirely). Though the episodes featuring him as a main characters were eventually shown, the scripts were not reworked to adjust to the new chronological placement, simply being more or less direct translations of the original English versions.

*Cut: After Jazz makes his "snow fair" joke, the pan across to Bumblebee has been cut.

*Cut: After Cliffjumper crashes ino the snow-covered tree, the scene of him shaking his head, Hound sliding by and crashing into a cactus have been cut.

*Cut: The scene of Gears pointing to his monitor and blaming the snow on the Decepticons and Prime walking up and bending forward have been cut.

*Cut: After Megatron makes his speech about gathering enough Energon cubes to conquer the universe, the pan across the ice cave toward Rumble has been cut.

*Cut: Following Teletraan-1's line, "Abnormally large energy expenditure in the Artic Circle", the scene of the monitor panning across the frozen tundra toward the large green crystal cone has been cut.

*Cut: After the Autobots all transform and leave the Ark, the scene of Prime driving next to the cliffside and Spike's line, "Arctic Circle, here we come" have been cut.

*Cut: After Starscream tosses Spike and Sparkplug to the ground, the following scene of him pointing his arm gun toward them and the humans reacting in horror have been cut. The sequence resumes as his firing on the roof of the ice cave to create the ice bars.

*Cut: Once Soundwave ejects Ravage at Megatron's command, the scene of Megatron pointing Ravage in a certain direction and Ravage charging down the cave have been cut. The sequence resumes at the inward pan of the empty cave and Jazz's line about "searching these tunnels for astro-minutes".

*Additional narration is added describing the scene where all the Autobots are standing over the injured Skyfire and Laserbeak sneakily observing them.

*Cut: Immediately following that scene, the scene of Megatron sitting down and spinning an Energon cube in his hand has been cut. The sequence resumes at his blinking chest.

*Additional narration, "and then...", is added to the scene of Megatron receiving the message from Laserbeak.

Notes
* This episode was produced as the seventh in the season, though it aired after the eighth-produced episode, "S.O.S. Dinobots".
* This episode contains the first time that Prime gives the famous "Transform and roll out" order.
*Strangely, the official Sunbow Productions cast list entry for "Fire in the Sky" names "Decepticon Workers" who "resemble Skywarp" as silent characters ("no dialogue") appearing in the episode. No such legion of Skywarps actually appears.
* Spike and Sparkplug have fashionable fur-lined cold-weather hardhats with ear flaps.
* Skyfire gets what may be the only internal monologue in the entire series, as he reflects unhappily on the Decepticons ethos.
* If you don't get a laugh out of Megatron nonchalantly beaning Starscream with an energon cube, there's no hope for you.
Synopsis
Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker are racing through the skies with the Aerialbots in hot pursuit. They have kidnapped human dignitaries for unknown, but certainly nefarious, purposes. The Aerialbots are debating amongst themselves in pretty stark terms if humans are worth saving. After they outmaneuver the Decepticons, Starscream dumps the hostages in mid-air. He and the others escape as the Aerialbots break off to save the humans.

Back at Autobot headquarters, the Aerialbots talk amongst themselves about their admiration of the Seekers, to the ire of the other Autobots. Teletraan I breaks in before the argument gets out of hand and alerts Optimus Prime to strange energy readings emanating from Cybertron. They board Omega Supreme and head into the stratosphere to investigate.

Under the ocean, Megatron gripes about the Aerialbots and losing air supremacy. Soundwave reports in that the Autobots have left earth, and Megatron goes after them across the space bridge. On Cybertron, Megatron explains that he has a time machine called a Kronosphere that he planned on using to steal energy from the past. Now, he wants to set a trap for the Aerialbots and send them back into the past.

The Autobots arrive on a dark and dingy Cybertron, and are attacked by Starscream and the others. Slingshot tries to get the Decepticons to stop attacking and talk to them. Starscream and the others drop down for a chat while Silverbolt frets. After gaining their trust, Starscream leads them right onto Megatron's Kronosphere. Silverbolt tries to warn them that it's a trap but it's too late. Megatron activates the device, intending to send them back to the beginning of time. The Aerialbots are encased in a purple bubble and disappear.

Seconds later, Optimus Prime and the other Autobots ram through the wall of the building and attack. Prime shoots the machine in order to stop it from trapping the Aerialbots in the past. The Decepticons retreat and Optimus orders the machine repaired. He estimates it has sent the Aerialbots 9 million years into the past to Cybertron's Golden Age.

The bubble bursts and the five planes reappear on Cybertron, but it's a different world than the one they left. This Cybertron is bright and alive. The Aerialbots admire the scenery and argue about whose fault it was that the planet was trashed. Slingshot isn't ready to blame the Decepticons and says they are misunderstood. They are interrupted by a small 'bot who introduces himself as Orion Pax. He works at the docks unloading energy shipments. Orion's friend Dion and girlfriend Ariel introduce themselves too. Dion alerts them to come outside and see the new type of flying robot that everyone is talking about. The Aerialbots go out and see Megatron, Soundwave and Shockwave flying overheard. Orion and Dion admire the flying robots, and Silverbolt warns them away from their hero worship. But does anybody listen to him? Nooooo.

After Orion goes back to work unloading ships, he is approached by a visitor who introduces himself as Megatron. Orion shows him around but when they reach the energy storehouse Megatron orders the Decepticons concealed outside to attack. When Orion tries to stop him, Megatron mercilessly shoots him and his two friends. The Aerialbots arrive after the battle to find the three Autobots inoperative.

Back in the present, Megatron is planning a counterattack to regain the Kronosphere. In nearby wreckage, Shockwave spots the body of a Guardian Robot, sans head, and Megatron plans to reactivate it. Meanwhile, Optimus, Wheeljack, Ironhide and Ratchet are still trying to repair the device.

In the past, the Aerialbots are carrying Orion's lifeless body to someone who can help. Slingshot is singing a very different tune now; he swears revenge on Megatron. A mustached figure from a doorway calls to them and suggests they go someplace else for help. Decepticon attacks have caused severe casualties among the Autobots. After the Aerialbots ask again, he agrees to fix Orion. After an unknown amount of time, the stranger emerges with a rebuilt Orion Pax, now going by the name Optimus Prime. Prime and the Aerialbots rush off to join the battle, while the stranger muses about rebuilding Ariel into a female warrior named Elita One.

Just as the tide of battle is turning in the Decepticons' favor, Megatron is confronted by Optimus Prime, who takes out the entire Decepticon front line by himself. Meanwhile, the Aerialbots have returned to the docks to find the Decepticons raiding the energy stores.

Flashing to the present, the time machine has been fixed, but Megatron and the Decepticons attack. To further complicate things, they let loose the Guardian Robot against the Autobots.

Back in the past, the Aerialbots set energy pack charges to blow up the storehouse in order to keep the energy out of Megatron's hands. Unfortunately, they are trapped inside because Decepticon warriors are blocking the exits. Silverbolt orders Slingshot to blow up the storehouse anyway. Just as the charges go off, the Kronosphere scoops them up and brings them back to the present. They merge into Superion and take out the Guardian Robot. Megatron retreats and an enraged Slingshot yells after him.

As they head back to Omega Supreme, Silverbolt describes their adventures in the past, and Optimus finally recognizes the Aerialbots as the ones who saved him. Ratchet demands to know what's going on and Optimus starts to tell the tale.
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
*The air battle at the beginning of the episode is filled with errors: Firstly, Slingshot is coloured like Air Raid when Skywarp is bearing down upon him. Moments later, Skydive fires purple lasers at Skywarp. Moments after that, black panels on Thundercracker's hull are mis-aligned. Finally, Slingshot's cockpit is unpainted, as is Starscream's chest.
*The top of Slingshot's head is consistently colored white in this episode, where it was orange in "The Key to Vector Sigma."
*While Megatron berates the Seekers for allowing the Aerialbots to defeat them, Starscream's lower right arm is coloured red.
*Omega Supreme disappears in a couple of frames during his transformation sequence.
*When Silverbolt notifies Prime about the other Aerialbots leaving with Starscream, Prime's smokestacks are drawn totally wrong (they're white instead of gray and are sort of melting into his trailer).
*As Optimus says, "Our only hope is to repair these time controls," his voice has an accent for a moment.
*Silverbolt asks Orion what he does, but it's Orion mouthing the words.
*The bottom of the screen has thin black lines on it for several shots just after the Aerialbots meet Orion.
*When Orion and the Aerialbots enter the loading bay for the first time, we see a vehicle that shares Dion's vehicle mode and colors unloading cargo. Right after that, Dion drives into the hangar from outside.
*Skydive explains to Fireflight why Megatron wouldn't recognize them 9 million years in the past, and Fireflight says, "Huh?" but the scene cuts to a close up of Skydive so it looks like he's saying it instead. Huh?
*Ariel is shown with the Aerialbots running back to the warehouse, but she's already in it (and gets shot down by Megatron) before they arrive. That was reused from the scene when Silverbolt said "That was Megatron".
*When Ariel is shot by Megatron, her cel is not properly aligned with the background, so one of her legs floats over the energon cubes.
*As Megatron flies out of the warehouse, his cannon is on his left arm.
*Skywarp is missing the metallic flange in his voice as he notes how the guardian robots used to give the Decepticons "a pounding back in the old days."
*As Alpha Trion decides to rename Ariel into Elita One, his chin is white rather than gray.
*In one aerial shot of Megatron's transport drones entering the docks, they disappear before reaching the doorway.
*Just before the Aerialbots return to the present, Megatron and the Decepticons land and fire their weapons, but the weapons make a "clunking" sound instead of the usual blasts.
*When the Aerialbots return, They appear a few seconds apart for some reason. Silverbolt transforms immediately and is missing his side windows. The rest of the Aerialbots simply run out of the energy field, but they're also given transformation sounds (which doesn't make sense as they were already in their robot modes in the past).
*As the Aerialbots start to form Superion, Slingshot and Fireflight form Superion's legs while Skydive and Air Raid form his arms. While this is different to their traditional placement, as Scramble City-type limbs, not altogether "wrong". However, once Superion is complete, Slingshot and Skydive have morphed into each other, likewise for Fireflight and Air Raid, resulting in the "normal" Superion.
*Megatron and the Decepticons fly out of the building, but the next shot shows them flying over the hole on the roof rather than through it.
*The original broadcast version of the episode had the entirety of act two's soundtrack incorrectly played back at too slow a speed, noticeably pitching down the dialogue and music. This was corrected for the Kid Rhino DVDs, but when Shout! Factory went back to the broadcast masters for their original audio tracks, this error was re-introduced to their DVD of the episode in order to restore it to its original broadcast version.

Continuity errors
* The humans the Seekers dump at the beginning of the episode somehow don't die after plummeting several hundred feet and landing on the metal bodies of the Aerialbots.
* When Starscream dumps the hostages, we see him drop a total of 7 people. In the next shot they have doubled, as we see 14 falling through the sky. In the shot after that, we see a total of 10 hostages being rescued.
* It is unclear why the Aerialbots (bar Silverbolt) are so impressed by the Seekers considering the ease with which the Decepticons were defeated.
*Optimus Prime somehow knows exactly what the Kronosphere is doing despite the fact he was out of earshot when Megatron said it.
* In "The Search for Alpha Trion", Optimus Prime had no idea that Alpha Trion was his creator, despite the fact he has a direct interaction with him here.
* Flashbacks in this episode depict the Autobots on Cybertron nine million years ago using energon cubes, despite the pre-movie cartoon's otherwise-consistent presentation of the cubes as the province of Decepticons alone, about which the Autobots knew nothing before 1984. The actual term "energon" is never used to refer to the cubes in this episode, however, so it may be an error on the animation level, rather than the scripting level.
*There's also at least one river on Cybertron, despite it being a world made of metal.

Transformers references
*This takes place "a few weeks" after "The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2", according to Optimus Prime.
*The events of the minicomic "64 Cybertron Urban Defense Robot GADEP" take place around this time period, showing Megatron raiding more energon storage facilities.

Trivia
*This episode introduces a lot of major mythological elements from the Generation 1 cartoon, including the origin of Optimus Prime and Elita One and showing the start of the Third Great War.
* While the Decepticons often threaten or injure humans, this is the first time they are shown explicitly trying to kill them via a direct act (Starscream dropping them from the sky).
**It may be more than coincidental that this episode also marks the return of Starscream after a three episode hiatus resulting from Megatron seriously injuring him in "Hoist Goes Hollywood". Maybe he damaged Starscream’s compassion processor?
*In an interview on the Kid Rhino DVD set, writer David Wise says that the meeting between Orion Pax and Megatron happened differently in the original version of the script. Megatron was to blast Orion's arm off and then use it to decapitate him. Sunbow, fearing the scene was too violent, had it changed.
*Megatron asks who Optimus Prime is, and Optimus replies, "Your worst nightmare." A nod to Rambo, perhaps?
*For whatever reason, voice actor John Stephenson wasn't in this episode and thus Thundercracker and Alpha Trion had different voices; Alpha Trion's voice was Corey Burton's, and Thundercracker's was that of voice director Wally Burr. Burr also filled in as Jazz in "Kremzeek!" and Ratchet in "Masquerade".
*Dion's fate is never revealed. Fans have speculated that he was also rebuilt and reformatted by Alpha Trion into a familiar character, with Ultra Magnus and Ironhide being the two most popular suspects. Of course, it's entirely possible he simply died.
*This episode is one of the two episodes before the movie featuring a genuine female Transformer.
*Footage from this episode was used to represent a historical video in "Transform and Roll Out", the opening movie for Transformers Animated. Most notably, a shot of Dion shielding his eyes with his hand was used out of context to represent an Autobot saluting.
*Later, Dion's profile in Timelines #4, "Wings of Honor", gave a name to the specific area of the docks which Orion and the others worked. Storage yard 67 was named for e-HOBBY Orion Pax and Dion's Japanese identification number.
*In case you couldn't tell, the headless guardian robot reactivated by Megatron and co. is totally the same one Megatron decapitated in the past, and the ruined building housing the Kronosphere is the very same warehouse the Aerialbots destroyed.
*Aw, Starscream mending Skywarp's wings!
Within the Nemesis. Sunstorm struggles to free himself from a neck-hold in Jetfire's arms while spouting his evangelism. Performing a Stunner, Sunstorm escapes the hold to use his burning touch to incapacitate his opponent. But the attack doesn't work, causing Sunstorm to pause just long enough for Jetfire to use his leg-jets to push Sunstorm away. The two struggle until Jetfire is face-down, and Sunstorm prepares to finish Jetfire with his blasters, but he's caught off guard by Jetfire shooting head lasers. With Sunstorm down, Jetfire and Starscream leave while they can.

On board the Orion, Jetfire and Starscream confer with Brawn, Ratchet, and Bumblebee regarding the nature of Sunstorm and how he should be handled. Bumblebee shows a bit of skepticism which, with agitation from Starscream, almost causes a skirmish. Jetfire, however, cuts the hostilities and announces that he's deduced a manner of anticipating Sunstorm's destination.

At Central Hall on Cybertron, Prowl attempts to make an address to the public, but is overwhelmed by a barrage of citizens expressing their concerns over various issues. Ultra Magnus intervenes and uses his authority to provide diplomatic assistance. Afterwards, Prowl, Kup, and Ironhide hang out at the Alpha Preserve and reflect on the political changes to Cybertron and toss around the idea of leaving Cybertron to the civilians while the soldiers hunt down Decepticons elsewhere.

The Earth-Decepticons limp away from the Orion, partially refueled as part of a deal for Starscream's co-operation in recovering the other Autobots and taking care of Sunstorm. On board, Cliffjumper and Brawn debate against Bumper on the justice of the arrangement Bumblebee's made. Overhearing Brawn's side, Bumblebee loses some self-esteem.

Elsewhere on the ship, Starscream whines as Ratchet and Jetfire synthesize a device that will simulate Starscream's energy signature to misdirect Sunstorm. Jetfire is fascinated by Sunstorm's self-repairing capabilities and his ability to manifest great power from a solar-powered fusion reactor without expiring. The plan is developed: get Sunstorm to over-exert himself and attach the artificial-Starscream to cancel his super-abilities. As soon as this plan is explained, Sunstorm is seen on radar heading towards the Orion.

Bumblebee takes a jet to confront Sunstorm, with three other Autobots wearing jetpacks. Jetfire protests the arrangement, saying that he should be in battle instead of remaining on the Orion to make sure Starscream doesn't misbehave. But soon after Bumblebee places the first hit against Sunstorm, Sunstorm is able to down Bumblebee's ship with a single blast. With the rest of the Autobots unable to fight, Jetfire abandons his duty and joins the combat.

With Jetfire on the scene, Sunstorm is brought crashing to the ground. Bumblebee takes the opportunity to attach the inhibitor on Sunstorm, who tries to resist the technology's interference. With his systems compromised, Sunstorm rockets away to recover. With Sunstorm down, Bumblebee considers the encounter a good job, while Jetfire, his armor disabled, still worries that Sunstorm could be a menace, so he activates his one last hidden card.
In Alaska, Starscream recovers in a cave, and the crippled Sunstorm comes begging for help. But before Starscream can do anything, part of the mountain is collapsed by...
* Most of the crowd listening to Prowl's address are Generation 2 or Japanese-exclusive characters, such as Sonic Bomber, Axelerators, Multiforce, and the Trainbots (right).
* Jetfire is seen in a new design that combines elements from both his cartoon/comic look and his original toy, similar to the designs seen for Dreamwave iterations of most other characters. Jetfire's amalgam is more convoluted than most due to the wildly different looks of the source materials.
* The name of the issue was borrowed from Jetfire's name on the original television series. This name is no longer used for this character by Hasbro.
* Starscream mentions that the Autobots, or at least Bumblebee, are/is (a) devout follower(s) of the Covenant of Primus.
* Kup's consideration of taking the war off of Cybertron is reference to The War Within.
* Bumblebee flies into battle in a jet almost identical to his Cybertronian alternate mode (first seen in the cartoon episode "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1") and he wears a face-plate making him appear slightly more similar to his Generation 1 toy.
* On the "Prime Transmissions" page, reader mail is answered by Editor-in-chief Roger Lee. There's also fan art of Predaking submitted by Steven Davis.
* Jetfire is seen in a new design that combines elements from both his cartoon/comic look and his original toy, similar to the designs seen for Dreamwave iterations of most other characters. Jetfire's amalgam is more convoluted than most due to the wildly different looks of the source materials.
The Decepticons steal Wheeljack's latest invention, which immobilizes stuff, and Ironhide attempts to retrieve it.

Synopsis
At Autobot headquarters, Wheeljack gathers everyone around for a demonstration of his newest invention, the Wheeljack Instant Immobilizer. Walking in late, Ironhide sees Hound’s hologram of Laserbeak and, thinking it’s real, fires wildly at it, scattering the Autobots and nearly bringing down the roof. As Ironhide apologizes, Wheeljack reveals that the Immobilizer was damaged and needs a replacement polarizer. Bumblebee and Spike volunteer to go into town to retrieve it.

While on their mission, 'Bee and Spike stop for a few rounds of Robot Resource at the local arcade. A young woman named Carly introduces herself to the pair and admits her fondness for the "cute Autobot". A somewhat jealous and awkward Spike reminds Bumblebee that they need to leave, and the pair take off, only to be stopped a few moments later by a sarcastic policeman. As they are being busted for speeding, Ravage attacks Bumblebee and secretly plants a miniature video camera on the Autobot. Spike electrocutes Ravage with jumper cables, and the Decepticon retreats. The officer lets the pair go with a warning.

With the Immobilizer repaired, Wheeljack starts the demonstration again, unaware his every word is being caught by the microbug camera on Bumblebee and relayed to Starscream and Megatron. The Decepticons aren’t too keen on the idea of being permanently immobilized by the invention, and Megatron promises to steal it.

Optimus Prime decides to move the test outdoors for safety. As the Autobots approach the location, Prime directs Ironhide to guard the perimeter. The rest proceed toward a fast-moving river, which Wheeljack immobilizes with the device. In the commotion caused by the success of the test, Spike messes with the Immobilizer and is almost zapped, but Wheeljack throws him out of the way, takes the blast himself, and winds up stiff as a board.

Still patrolling the perimeter, Ironhide catches a glimpse of a shadowy figure and fires his weapon. He discovers that the figure was Carly, whom he scolds for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The distant sound of gunfire cuts their conversation short, and Ironhide rushes off. He reaches the clearing to find the Decepticons have the Autobots at gunpoint, and blames the ambush on himself.

Megatron demands that Prime hand over the Immobilizer, and a battle ensues. The device gets knocked about and winds up in Megatron's hands, but just as he starts issuing another threat, the river, on which he and the Decepticons are now standing, re-mobilizes and sweeps them downstream.

While undergoing repairs back at headquarters, Ironhide criticizes his performance in the field. Concluding that he’s too old to be of use, he resigns from active service, and nothing Ratchet or Prime says dissuades him. Carly blames herself for Ironhide's attitude and tries to convince him not to quit. Ironhide gives her a tour of the base, and she pockets a grenade when they visit the armory.

Some time later, Wheeljack unfreezes, and Spike notices that Carly is missing. Suspecting she’s emotional and going to do something rash ('cuz she is a girl), Spike and Bumblebee set out to look for her. Turns out he’s right. Carly has driven a boat out into the ocean and, using SCUBA gear, swims down to Decepticon headquarters to plant the stolen grenade on their outer wall. However, she’s detected by Soundwave, kidnapped by Laserbeak, and brought into the base to face Megatron’s judgment.

Luckily for Carly, her abduction was caught by the Sky Spy. Ironhide rushes off to find Spike and Bumblebee and start a rescue mission.

Back under the ocean, the grenade Carly planted earlier goes off, and seawater starts rushing into Decepticon headquarters. They manage to fix the damage and contain the water, except in the cell where Carly is being held. With disturbing glee, Megatron and the others watch Carly struggle as water fills the cell to the ceiling. Assuming she’s dead, they leave the cell unguarded. This lets Ironhide swim through the hole in the wall, grab the girl and bring her back to the surface.

After thanking Ironhide for the rescue, Carly rides off with Spike and Bumblebee, but when Ironhide doesn’t follow, they realize that he’s been immobilized. The Decepticons and Autobots square off, with Rumble in control of the Immobilizer and freezing most of the Autobot forces. Following a plan of Carly’s design, Brawn tunnels under the ground with her and Spike so they come up near the Immobilizer's position. As Jazz distracts the Decepticons with a sound and light show, Carly crosses some wires in the device and the trio escapes. When Rumble tries to immobilize Optimus Prime, the device starts to re-mobilize the frozen Autobots instead. Ironhide grabs the Immobilizer from Laserbeak, and when all the Autobots are unfrozen, he smashes the device. With his toy in pieces, Megatron swears to return, and the Decepticons retreat.

Back at headquarters, Ironhide asks to return to active duty, and Optimus heartily welcomes him back. Carly explains how she switched around the wires in the Immobilizer, since she does have a science scholarship at MIT. Confronted by both brains and beauty, Spike has no choice but to ask Carly on a date. Sparkplug watches them drive off and smiles in approval, despite the fact that his son is going out with a college student while he's too young to have a driver’s license.
"We should vaporize those Autobot fools and fuse their carcasses into slag!"
:—So, Starscream, you're planning to, uh, fuse their vaporized carcasses? It'd be worth paying to see you attempt it.
"Give me the device now, Optimus Prime."<br>
"This is where we store our ammo. Course, uh, we'd rather not have any of this stuff around. But until the Decepticons change, or we pacify 'em once and for all..."<br>
"Someone should pacify those Decepticons...and their underwater headquarters."
Notes
Animation or technical glitches
* Gears's shoulders/torso is all blue as the Autobots gather around Wheeljack. Only his truck roof should be blue; the rest should be red.
* Wheeljack is missing the lines on his "ears" when they stop flashing during "a clever little creation I call..."
* Cliffjumper has a completely wrong voice as he asks what the Immobilizer does. It sounds like a professorial type or something. Same thing happened to him in "Changing Gears", too.
* Brawn is suddenly with the gathered Autobots as they duck from Ironhide's random firing, despite not being in any of the establishing shots of the group.
* Ironhide's arm is layered in front of Spike as Spike dusts himself off, making them appear the same size.
* Ironhide's helmet rim is partly light gray instead of red as Wheeljack speaks to him. The same error will recur throughout the episode.
* Bumblebee's arm is layered behind one of the onlookers in the arcade as he bows. Said onlooker and his buddies continue their huge-mouthed gaping long after the cheering has stopped.
* The background behind Bumblebee changes between shots; when he bows, there's just the Robot Resource game, but in the next shot, two consoles have appeared, neither of them Robot Resource.

* Carly's car is just sitting there half on the sidewalk. It's next to a fire hydrant that's almost as big as the car. And Robots Video Arcade apparently has a huge front door.
* Bumblebee has two random black rectangles on the back of his VW Bug mode as he transforms outside the arcade.
* Ravage's eye is randomly glowing white before he attacks Bumblebee. It could be an intentional effect to show emotion or recognition or something, but it's an odd choice.
* Some have claimed that Trailbreaker and Jazz are off-model as they help clean up the mess in Autobot Headquarters (too thin and too fat, respectively). Others find this claim to be rather dubious.
* When Wheeljack screws the polarizer on his new doohickey, his hand and lower arm pass through the polarizer. He also has random orange on his shoulders where there should only be white.
* Megatron appears to have an extra right forearm segment as he speaks his first line.
* Ravage's rear paws are light grey instead of black as he leaps to transform.
* Bits of Brawn's helmet are yellow instead of gray during the bizarre sequence of partial transformations.
* Jazz is off-model during his sequence a second later, with no fenders, no stripes, and an extra window.
* As Prime orders Ironhide to take the first watch, his headlights aren't colored in. In the background, a whole line of misshapen Autobot cars is driving past, including what looks like an off-model Cliffjumper colored entirely blue.
* Prime has a huge crotch as the camera pans down to Bumblebee.
* Missing Seeker insignias:
** In the first pan of the Decepticons surrounding the Autobots, Starscream's missing his wing insignia, and Soundwave's visor is white instead of red (and again when the shot is recycled after the first commercial break.)
** Starscream is missing his wing emblems as he falls over from Ironhide's goop.
** As he wanders into the trees, Starscream only has one of his wing insignia.
** Thundercracker only has one insignia as he climbs out of the river.
* Starscream has an all-yellow nosecone as he transforms to fly over the force field.
* As he dives at the Autobots, Starscream's air intakes are the same light gray as the rest of him, instead of red.
* Megatron has no transformation sound effect as he transforms to destroy the bouncer bomb.
* Prime's left exhaust stack disappears into thin air as he turns toward the falling tree. He also has a random white segment above his grille.
* Prime's thighs are red instead of silver as Trailbreaker makes his "rust in peace" gag.
* Trailbreaker's force field projector is missing as the Autobots prepare to return to base.
* Ironhide clips through the corner of the wall as he walks off to "retire".
* Bumblebee leaves base to look for Carly... then is shown in the very next shot with the Autobots gathered around Prime in the base.
* Prowl is shown rolling out, even though he hasn't been in a single shot so far. Ironhide is also shown rolling out even though he "retired", and more problematically, is still at the base when Sparkplug detects Carly's kidnapping.
* Improbable viewpoints:
** Sparkplug shows Ironhide a visual that's supposedly from the Sky Spy. Somehow, the orbital satellite shows a tracking pan view of Laserbeak that's right beside him — below him, in fact. If the entire sequence is taken as Sky Spy's footage, Laserbeak flies within inches of Sky Spy's camera, as Carly's face fills the screen at one point.
* Ironhide's observation that Laserbeak has taken Carly is muffled as if it were coming over a radio transmission.
* Skywarp's arm laser, and Soundwave's head vents, are both white after Starscream gives the order to attack.

Continuity errors
* For his initial Immobilizer demonstration, Wheeljack asked Hound to project a hologram. Was he actually going to immobilize the hologram? How's that even possible?
* Spike suddenly has a wristwatch when he needs to check the time in the arcade. The watch is never seen before or after.
* Megatron knows which one is Bumblebee. Later, he doesn't.
* When Carly disappears, Spike and Bumblebee go after her. In the next shot, Bumblebee is back inside with the rest of the Autobots.
* Carly apparently knows where the Decepticon base is located. How she knows is anyone's guess.
* In addition to the Immobilizer, she also has a great understanding of technology she's seen for the first time in her life. In the armoury, Ironhide only refers to storing ammunition yet Carly seems to recognize a bomb, or had the knowledge to convert alien ammunition into a timed explosive. MIT obviously gave that scholarship to the right candidate!
* Would Ironhide really have prevented the Decepticon sneak attack if he hadn't moved the hundred feet or so from his station? Couldn't the 'cons have just come from the other direction?
* Carly's another pressure-proof super human, just like Spike. She swims at least a few hundred feet underwater to Decepticon Headquarters with no pressurized diving equipment at all. At least the animators were kind enough to give her a wet suit!
* In addition, since Ironhide isn't shown to have any SCUBA gear for Carly, he had to have made an extremely rapid ascent to the surface so she wouldn't drown. However, an ascent that fast would have given her decompression sickness, or worse.
* "It's a theory I've had ever since I accepted my science scholarship at MIT," says Carly about Wheeljack's immobilizer, which she just encountered for the first time like, earlier that same day. Did she accept the scholarship while imprisoned in Decepticon Headquarters?

Continuity notes
* This episode is Carly's introduction to the series.
* Gadgets and powers:
** Brawn uses the same tunneling drill he had in "The Ultimate Doom, Part 1".
** Ironhide has a jet pack that pretty much fills the back of his torso. That same space contained a missile launcher in "More than Meets the Eye, Part 3".
** Ironhide fires one of his liquids out of his totally-retracted wrist. It's a brownish-red stuff which appears to act like glue — very different than the whitish glue stuff he fired from tri-barreled wrist weapons back in "Divide and Conquer".
* This episode marks the second time that Ratchet has threatened to shut Ironhide up by physically removing his ability to speak (the first was in More than Meets the Eye, Part 3). Yeesh, someone needs to work on their bedside manner.
*If this episode's dialogue is taken seriously, it would mean that Spike is at least 13-15 years old (depending on the particular state). This raises disturbing questions about why Sparkplug allows his son to date a woman who's old enough to at least be starting college. Then again, Sparkplug had Spike working on a remote oil platform in the middle of the ocean, so family dynamics within the Witwickys are certainly... unconventional, Carly also could be clever enough to have graduated high school early.
* &lt; &lt; What makes Starscream the leader? Megatron got shot and fell down! &gt; &gt;
Real-world references
* It was the 80s. Video arcades were the hot thing.
** Robot Resource uses sounds from Galaga.
* Carly is or will be a student at MIT.
* Spike describes a chocolate soda as "an emulsified CO2 with lactic acid".

Trivia
* Stores on the street: Vincenzo's Pizza, Rose Beauty Saloon, Meat, and Robots Video Arcade.
* Video games in the arcade: Pan!!, Oh!!, Chu, Ha Ha Ha, SFX, Hot, and Robot Resource.
* No wonder the cops pull Bumblebee over. His entrance into traffic is terrible; he swerves between lanes, and totally cuts off some poor driver.
*The Japanese dubbing of the episode had been edited to remove Skyfire (due to the fact that Takara were unsure about using Skyfire/Jetfire at the time because he was based on a Bandai toy), which is pretty obvious as there are jumps in the background music. Skyfire did eventually appear in the Japanese dub near the end of its run.
* C'mon! Starscream walking into trees is hilarious!
Jack and Arcee undertake a dangerous mission on Cybertron to access Vector Sigma, while Orion begins to rebel against Megatron.

Synopsis
Jack and Arcee walk through Kaon, guided by the light of the Key to Vector Sigma. They come upon a circular clearing, and the key glows intensely, indicating that they must be close. Suddenly, the ground begins to shake, and cracks appear in the surface. The duo watch in awe as a passageway rises from the ground, its door illuminated the same as the Key. It opens, but just as the two are about to enter, an enormous creature rears up from atop the passage. Arcee's Autobot symbol catches its eye, and it charges her, Arcee's minute strength doing nothing to injure it. She is quickly incapacitated, and the creature notices Jack, giving temporary pursuit until distracted by Arcee. Jack radios Ratchet and is told that the creature is an Insecticon, one of many sentries left to guard the dead Cybertron. Arcee tells Jack to go, to his surprise, but he realizes the necessity. As he enters, the door closes behind him.

On the Nemesis, Megatron inquires as to Orion's progress on Project Iacon. Orion says it's tough work, but Megatron says otherwise, revealing to him that all of his unsanctioned research has been recorded. Orion takes the opportunity to ask about his reported affiliation with the Autobots, but Megatron merely tells him to get back to work. Orion decides that enough is enough, and erases his progress in the archives. Megatron laughs, and shows the clerk that he has been recorded and documented in his pursuits. Soundwave intrudes, to show Megatron that one of their sentries came online on Cybertron. Orion asks how anything is alive on the planet, but Megatron tells him to continue his work-or be terminated.

Back on Cybertron, Arcee tangles with the enormous bug, but is no match for its brute strength. Finished with her, the Insecticon turns its attention to the fleshling, and breaks its way into the tunnel.

In the depths of the tunnel, Jack hears a familiar noise, and uproots a metal bar for protection.

Back on the Nemesis, Megatron reviews the reports with Soundwave. He learns of the space bridge's activation, its endpoint, and the fact that it is still active. He quickly deduces the Autobots' plan.

In Cybertron's depths, Jack arrives at the chamber of Vector Sigma. He proceeds to the center of a circular platform, where he places the Key. The entire chamber begins to transform and glow with the Key's energy, and the enormous supercomputer reveals itself, and begins to transfer its energy to the Key.

On the Nemesis, Orion is hassled by the guards. He appeals to their "good nature", saying that he believes Megatron will use the information he is agglomerating for nefarious purposes. Good-old fashioned police brutality ensues as the helpless clerk is kicked and punched by his guards.

In the chamber, Jack is antsy about the speed of his download. His problems lie beyond his dial-up, however, because behind him, a horde of Scraplets has just taken notice of the very alive metal before him in the form of the Key to Vector Sigma. Jack is helpless to fend them off, and they begin to snack on the download port. He reports frantically on his position to ground control

In the space bridge chamber, however, the Autobots have bigger fish to fry as Megatron steps out of a GroundBridge to them. Ratchet vows to protect their charges, and the battle begins, Megatron easily flooring every Autobot, Ratchet and Bulkhead twice.

On Cybertron, Arcee awakes to find a Scraplet chewing on her foot. She blasts it off, and notices the opened passage—and the absent Insecticon. Transforming, she speeds into the passageway.

Jack valiantly smashes the Scraplets as they feed, but is unable to stop their progress towards the Matrix. Another problem presents itself behind him in the form of the Insecticon. It charges towards him, but stops in its tracks, staring at the key. Jack realizes why, and the Scraplets suddenly become a blessing. He formulates an idea, pulling a Scraplet off the Key and pointing it at the aggressor. The Insecticon turns tail as it realizes what's happening, but the Scraplets give chase and latch on, quickly chewing through the giant insect as it falls to its doom, limbs disconnected. The download completes, and Jack retrieves the key. Arcee finally arrives, and the two depart.

The Vehicon guards continue to beat down Orion, and one of them lets slip that it's a privilege to beat the former leader of the Autobots. Orion pleads with them to stop, and in his defense, he accidentally transforms his arms into blasters. Realizing they're in trouble, the guards fire on Pax, but he quickly dispatches them both.

Arcee and Jack arrive at the space bridge portal, and radio Ratchet about their position. Total silence on the comm tip them off that something is wrong, and, undetected on the other end of the portal, Megatron waits to end the lineage of the Primes. However, he is surprised by the sudden arrival of Orion Pax, who vows that, no matter what his heritage might be, his spark is aligned with the Autobots. He deploys his blades, and charges for Megatron, but is quickly defeated. Megatron says that he has much to learn, and prepares to kill him, but Arcee speeds through the bridge and collides with him, sending them both flying. In the light of the bridge, Jack presents the Key to Orion, who hesitates, but accepts his destiny.

The Key begins to upload the Matrix to its host. Megatron, preoccupied with fighting Arcee, notices this, and desperately runs at him. However, Orion Pax—now Optimus Prime once again—isn't ready to go down again, and trounces his enemy. A GroundBridge portal opens up, and the Autobots retreat.

At base, the Autobots and humans rejoice at their reunion. Noticing his Decepticon symbol, Optimus asks Ratchet what had happened. He replies that it was their darkest hour, but at every point along the way, Optimus was truly an Autobot at spark.
"Why does history portray me siding with the Autobot aggressors? And why did Starscream call me a Prime? I must know...who am I?"<br>
Notes
Animation or technical errors
*As Megatron notices Jack recharging Optimus's Matrix and lets go of Arcee, his shoulder armour goes through the wall.

Continuity errors
*As Optimus jumps through the Autobot GroundBridge, he is suddenly sporting Autobot insignias.

Continuity notes
*The scraplets seem a lot nastier in this episode, chewing so fast as to render a hulking robot limbless in a matter of seconds. This is not an error, as many factors could contribute, such as the scraplets' inability to find living metal on the barren Cybertron and the ancient state of the Insecticon.
*Optimus still has the broken sword from way back in "One Shall Fall". It would seem that the Decepticons neglected to repair it. Or rather, neglected to mention that he had weapons in the first place.
*The Insecticon is the first Cybertronian in the Prime cartoon to have a Beast alternate mode.

Transformers references
* Ratchet references The Transformers: The Movie by referring an event as "our darkest hour", as he did before in "Darkness Rising, Part 5", and as Optimus did in One Shall Rise, Part 3.
* Bulkhead calls Megatron "buckethead", a reference to the original Megatron.
* The Insecticon's insect mode resembles a large rhinoceros beetle, like several other Insecticons.
* From the Scraplets' point-of-view, the sphere of Vector Sigma is seen in its faceted orb appearance common to many continuities.

Real-world references
*Bulkhead's line bemoaning the Scraplets on Cybertron is a paraphrase of the oft-referenced "Why did it have to be snakes?" line from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Trivia
*Look closely at the arena in Kaon: it's the same arena as seen in "One Shall Rise, Part 3". Ironic that the entrance to Vector Sigma lay beneath Megatron's feet at that moment.
*When Jack coaxes the Scraplets into attacking the Insecticon, he calls it "the main course", echoing what Bulkhead said while using himself as bait in "Scrapheap".
*The way Optimus catches Megatron's sword just after he regains his memory is the exact same as when Megatron caught Optimus' sword in "One Shall Fall". It even makes the same thundering noise.
*Jack never picked up a souvenir for Raf, which Raf asked for in the previous episode. No one ever brings souvenirs for Raf. Aww...
