The Decepticon [[Emperor of Destruction]], he bears a bitter grudge against [[Autobot]] [[Supreme Commander]], [[Star Saber (G1)|Star Saber]]. He prefers to lead his warriors from a distance, though engages in battle when necessary. Much like a Bond villain, he'll gladly tell you his plan before leaving you unsupervised in a delayed-result death trap. That said, he is ferociously powerful, and has come disturbingly close to victory on several occasions. He even pulled the trigger in an attack that would have killed a helpless Star Saber, only to find he'd transfered too much energy to his fortress and the damn gun didn't work. The gun's designer was later found impaled on a church spire.

He commands the [[Decepticon Space City]]. Deathsaurus is a [[Breastforce]] warrior, meaning he has two detachable breastplates which can transform into the [[Tigerbreast]] and [[Eaglebreast]], respectively.

Years ago, striving to become the Decepticons' new [[Emperor of Destruction]], Deathsaurus created a gigantic battle fortress capable of destroying planets, but an attack by the young [[Autobot]] commander [[Star Saber (G1)|Star Saber]] saw the fortress de-powered and trapped within a region of space known as the [[Dark Nebula]]. This began the enmity between Star Saber and Deathsaurus, and as both combatants rose through the ranks of their respective armies, Deathsaurus vowed to eventually liberate his fortress and use it to destroy Star Saber.

After the conclusion of the [[Masterforce|Masterforce war]] on Earth, Deathsaurus set his sights on the planet's vast energy sources, and, from his command post on the Decepticons' starcraft the [[Thunder Arrow]], he directed his troops, the [[Breastforce]] and [[Dinoforce]] in attacks on the planet. Deathsaurus rarely dirtied his own hands, entering battle only rarely, and only when there was a chance that he could confront Star Saber directly, such as there was when he led the Breastforce in raiding the electrical energy of American subway systems. This led him to be the object of great contempt from Breastforce sub-leader [[Leozack]], who schemed against Deathsaurus, but systematically failed to succeed in his numerous ploys, either as a result of his own incompetence or the counter-scheming of his subordinate, [[Hellbat]], who sought to overthrow both him and Deathsaurus. Deathsaurus was no fool, however, and remained perpetually aware of Leozack's plans - when the time came, he thrashed the Breastforcer in combat and forced him to swear utter loyalty to him.

While Star Saber was on the planet [[Micro]], Deathsaurus returned to the Dark Nebula to investigate the possibility of reactivating his fortress; he did not have enough energy, but was at least able to confirm that the fortress was in functional order and could be reactivated when the time came. Unfortunately for him, having expended what energy he had to confirm this, he was unable to finish Star Saber when he engaged him in battle in space on the return trip. Later, back on Earth, Deathsaurus lured Star Saber into a trap in the desert, where he attacked with the power of the Living Metal-Destroying Cannon.

The weapon almost finished Star Saber off until [[Ginrai|God Ginrai]] intervened and was left at death's door instead, but when he was reconstructed as [[Victory Leo]] and combined with Star Saber to form [[Victory Saber]], they were able to thwart Deathsaurus's plan to bombard Earth with missiles.

Discovering that the sunken continent of [[Atlantis]] contained enough raw energy to re-energize his fortress, Deathsaurus ransacked the ancient ruins and abandoned the Dinosaur Force to their fate as the Thunder Arrow shot off into space to fulfill his evil plan. With the fortress active and headed directly for Earth, even Victory Saber could not stand up to its power, but a resentful Dinosaur Force supplied information on the fortress's weak spot to Star Saber's adopted human son, [[Jean Minakaze|Jean]], who used his own [[Illumina II|personal mech]] to enter the fortress and strike and this vulnerability. As he did so, Deathsaurus and Star Saber engaged in a vicious battle, during which Deathsaurus lost an eye, and was eventually stopped when Star Saber broke his sword off in the villain's chest. Gushing fuel and fluid, Deathsaurus vowed to have the last laugh as he set the crippled fortress on a collision course with Earth, and blew himself out an airlock, vowing to return again and again. But, as his body drifted off into space, no sign of life was visible from the conquered emperor. Victory Saber subsequently destroyed the fortress, but Deathsaurus was not heard from again.

As a parallel to Star Saber's adoption of [[Jean Minakaze|Jean]], Deathsaurus had a "son" of his own, a human boy named [[Solon Kitakaze]]. Solon's mother was killed during a Decepticon attack on Earth, and Deathsaurus "adopted" the boy, turning him into a cyborg and raising him to believe that he was his son. Solon had frequent clashes with Jean, whose school he began attending, which often degenerated into "my dad can beat up your dad"-style arguments as their "fathers" battled. At one point, Deathsaurus even attempted to bribe Jean into joining the Decepticons with toys, games, candy and cash.

Solon had his own battle armour and often rode Deathsaurus's Breastars as steeds, but when Victory Leo and Star Saber merged into Victory Saber, Deathsaurus sought a way to increase his own power in a similar fashion and crafted a Transformer-sized mech for Solon named [[King Solon]], with which he was able to combine, forming [[King Zaras]]. However, in the midst of this battle, Solon discovered the truth about his mother, and his distraction allowed Victory Saber to destroy the King Solon mecha. Deathsaurus fled, abandoning Solon, who accepted his earthly heritage and joined the Autobots.

During the final battle, as Deathsaurus's fortress attacks the Earth, it is he who battles Star Saber in space ''(unlike the animated series, in which Liokaiser takes this role)''. Leozack, then, is able to take his treachery to the ultimate extreme by turning the fortress's power on Deathsaurus, and Deathsaurus cripples the craft with his cannon as Star Saber takes Leozack down. Then, the wounded Deathsaurus reveals the true reason he has quested to liberate the fortress from the Dark Nebula{{m-}}it is home to the Decepticons' families and civilians. As the shocked Autobots discover this, they meet Deathsaurus's wife, [[Esmeryl]] and Deathsaurus and Star Saber then make peace, shaking hands and vowing to work together for the betterment of the Transformer race.

Using a clone lab on [[Ceti Alpha Seven]], Deathsaurus wished to revive the fading [[Decepticon Empire]] with a vast [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]] army. After the first batch of [[Virulent Clone|clones]] was completed, his operation was interrupted by a team of [[Autobot]] commandos under the command of [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]]. Deathsaurus overpowered and captured the first wave himself, and soon faced Ironhide one-on-one, while [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] attempted to rescue the fallen Autobots. Due to the assistance of Tripredacus Agent [[Flamewar]], these two were defeated and captured as well.

They woke up bound inside Deathsaurus' clone lab. The Emperor of Destruction appeared on a television screen, declaring that his use for the lab was completed and was prepared to detonate it remotely with the Autobots inside. Unfortunately for Deathsaurus, the Autobot espionage agent [[Ricochet (Timelines)|Ricochet]] not only freed the Autobots before the explosion occurred, but also seeded the remaining clones with a virus, leaving Deathsaurus with nothing to show for his work.

: The original Deathsaurus toy transformed into a nondescript dragon lizard thing with wings (or giant mutant space chicken) that doesn't really look like anything except ugly. His chest compartment contained two ''Breastforce'' components, Tigerbreast and Eaglebreast that transform into their animal namesakes, and can further transform into Targetmaster-style gun modes. Unusually for late G1 toys, he has [[die-cast]]-metal feet in beast mode.

*Deathsaurus's name is the source of a long-lasting argument. The phonetic Japanese reading of the name is: "De-su-za-ra-su". This is represented in English on his toy packaging and tech specs as "Deszaras." English-speaking fans would long debate the "proper" romanisation of the name, interpreting it as Deszaras, Deathsaurus, Death Czarus, Def Zarce, Deaths 'R' Us, Debt Source, Darth Sass, Death's Arse and god knows what else. "Deathsaurus" had a tendency to be the most popular and well-known (on account of it actually ''meaning'' something), which led to it being used on the character's first official Western toy, making it his official American name. However, it is unlikely that this was supposed to be the actual name for the character{{m-}}were his name "saurus", then it would be rendered as "sa-u-ru-su" in Japanese, rather than "za-ra-su"{{m-}}and that his name was genuinely intended to be the nonsense word, "Deszaras" (or perhaps "Deathzaras"). The character appears with the "Deszaras" name on the R2 ''Transformers: Victory'' DVD boxset.

==Detailed synopsis==
At a baseball stadium on [[Earth]], the [[Decepticon]]s are setting up a [[space bridge]], over the objections of the [[human]]s. [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] decides to let his troops have some fun: [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]] fires baseballs at people from his cannons, [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] play catch (using a human), [[Ravage]] chases a player around the field, and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] starts grabbing people in [[alternate mode|jet mode]]. The unwholesome family fun is ended when the [[Autobot]]s arrive. As [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and the Autobots attack, [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] tries to run a scan on the space bridge, but Megatron shoots the controls. However, Optimus Prime, Perceptor, [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]], [[Inferno (G1)|Inferno]], [[Smokescreen (G1)|Smokescreen]], Soundwave, Ravage, Thrust, and Starscream are within the space bridge's confines at the time, and they are sucked into a portal along with the [[energon cube]]s. As Megatron laments the loss of the energon (and fails to notice the bright side of Optimus and Starscream probably being dead), the space bridge self-destructs. [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] leads the remaining Autobots back to the [[Ark (G1)|base]], hoping that [[Teletraan I]] can figure out where the others were sent.

Meanwhile, the lost Transformers awaken to find themselves somewhere else. All of a sudden, a large sphere lands atop Starscream. Then a monster attacks, chasing Soundwave. Thrust tries to fly away, but lands in a body of water. Also, Ravage is caught by some plant life. Convinced the Decepticons are no longer a threat, Optimus has the Autobots load the energon into his trailer, and they roll out. They find a building made of relatively poor materials, only to discover something quite shocking: They're in the bedroom of gargantuan alien child.

The boy, [[Aron]], places Starscream, Soundwave, Ravage, and Thrust in a small bowl, while [[Nitro]] (his pet and the creature that was chasing Soundwave) smells the Autobots. As Aron tells him to stop, the Decepticons escape. Thrust is tied down with a piece of string, Ravage is chased down like a mouse and locked in small cage with a rodent-like pet to run on a wheel (how embarrassing), and Soundwave is locked in a toy box. Starscream manages to hide in the small toy building and sees the Autobots. Naturally, Screamer fires his [[null-ray]] at the [[energon]], causing a fire. Starscream is quickly recaptured, and Inferno douses the fire. Optimus introduces the Autobots to Aron, when the boy's parents arrive. Hiding the Autobots in a desk drawer, Aron shows the Decepticons to his parents. However, Aron is also compelled to show the Autobots.

The Transformers are taken to a lab, where scientists intend to dissect them (starting with the Decepticons). However, Aron steals the Autobots away, with the authorities in pursuit. Aron hides behind a trash can, dodging his pursuers, but a local bully named [[Marty]] comes along. The Autobots hide within a trashcan, and Marty wanders off. Meanwhile, Ravage has picked his locks and frees the other Decepticons. Aron is still being chased by the authorities, so he intends to hide the Autobots at his house. However, Optimus tells Aron that they have to return to Earth, a planet far from this one. Aron wonders if he could see it through his telescope, and Perceptor happens upon an idea. However, Soundwave has overheard them. The authorities spot Aron, so the Autobots decide to escape by traveling to Aron's house through the sewers. The Decepticons see the Autobots and follow them below. As the two groups fight it out within the sewer, a wave comes along. (Let's not ponder what the wave is made of.) The Decepticons hightail it out, while the Autobots ride the wave in a teacup. Escaping out through a drainage pipe, the Autobots head to Aron's house.

Using Nitro as a way into Aron's room, Perceptor explains that they can use the energon, along with modifications to his [[light cannon]], to propel them to Earth through the telescope. Once he's ready, however, the Decepticons arrive and grab Bumblebee. Starscream orders Optimus to let them pass, and just as the [[Prime (rank)|Autobot leader]] is prepared to let them go, Nitro pounces, freeing Bumblebee but allowing the Decepticons to escape back to Earth...and land right in a lake filled with alligators.

Back on...whatever Aron's planet is called, Aron suggests using his toy rocket ship to go home. Perceptor is able to modify it for interstellar transport, and the Autobots depart, with Optimus telling Aron that whenever he looks into the sky, he'll be seeing them.

Before the dawn of time, Order and Chaos existed within an extradimensional entity known as the [[One]]. To explore the fledging universe, he created the astral being known as Unicron, and then subdivided him, creating his twin, Primus. Both brothers were multiversal singularities, unique in all realities, but whereas Unicron could only exist in one dimension at a time, moving between them at will, Primus existed simultaneously in all realities at once. It is suggested, in fact, that the two brothers embody the basic concepts of reality - good and evil, order and chaos - and that their continued existence is necessary for the stability of the multiverse.

As Unicron and Primus went about their appointed task, venturing through the cosmos, it became apparent to Primus that Unicron was a corrupt being, and he took it upon himself to stop the threat posed to all of existence by his sibling. In combat, Primus was no match for Unicron. In cunning, however, he proved himself to his brother's superior when he shifted their battle to the astral plane, and then back to the physical world once more, only to have both their essences manifest within metallic planetoids, leaving them both trapped. It was with this act of sacrifice that Primus hoped to contain Unicron's evil forever. Unfortunately for him, over time, Unicron learned to psionically shape his prison into a giant metallic planet, and Primus followed suit, becoming the mechanical world of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. When Unicron then learned to transform his planetary form even further, into a gigantic robot form, Primus adapted the idea to suit his own ends, creating a group of [[13 original Transformers|thirteen robots]] that possessed the ability to change shape, like Unicron.

The war between Unicron and Primus came to its seeming end during a climactic battle in which one of the Thirteen, who would forever afterwards be known as the [[Fallen]], betrayed Primus and became an acolyte of Unicron. The battle ended when the Fallen and Unicron were sucked into a black hole and disappeared from reality. With Unicron gone for now, Primus entered an eons-long slumber, his self-imposed sleep preventing Unicron from detecting him through the mental link the brothers shared.

Per Unicron's telling of events, he was a primal force of evil at the dawn of the universe, who led a legion of [[Dark Armies]] against his mortal foe, Primus, Lord of the [[Light Gods]] (note the plural). Events proceeded to play out basically as described above, though the role of the Light Gods and Dark Armies would diminish with each subsequent retelling of the story, until the current version, in which Primus and Unicron are alone, and have a unique origin.

Eventually, millions of years later, circa the Earth year 1990, in [[Generation 1 (Marvel Comics)|one version]] of the Generation 1 continuity, a group of Transformers discovered the sleeping form of Primus at Cybertron's core. When a battle erupted, a stray laser blast struck Primus, briefly jolting the god awake and causing him to emit a multiverse-shaking "Primal Scream" that woke Unicron and alerted him to Primus' location. Primus himself immediately slipped back into his sleep, but it was too late. {{storylink|Primal Scream}}

Unicron dispatched a group of [[Hook, Line, and Sinker|heralds]] to attack Cybertron and pave the way for his coming, including a [[Galvatron II|Galvatron]] plucked from an [[Rhythms of Darkness!|alternate future]] in which Unicron had succeeded in consuming Cybertron. Galvatron, however, was not content to serve under Unicron, and instead captured Autobot leader [[Emirate Xaaron]], forcing him to fully awaken Primus, who possessed Xaaron's body and summoned Transformers from all across the universe back to Cybertron. {{storylink|Out of Time!}} At this point, a mental command that Unicron had placed in some of Primus's creations was activated, resulting in the formation of a cult of Unicron-worshippers, who gathered to destroy the leader of the united Autobots and Decepticons. Their assassination attempt was foiled thanks to the aid of Galvatron.

Having suspected treachery on Galvatron's part, Unicron decided to forego consumption of the planet [[Jhi]] and head straight for Cybertron, shutting down his higher mental functions and drifting the remainder of the journey to hide himself from detection by Primus. Transforming back to robot mode upon arrival, he was somewhat disappointed to find that the gathered Transformers were simply so terrified of him that there was no resistance to his attack. Unicron destroyed Xaaron's body, robbing Primus of his avatar, but was then attacked by his former servant, Galvatron, whose first strike snapped the Transformers out of their collective stupor and began a counter-attack against the Chaos-Bringer. Briefly fazed by the illusion-casting powers of the [[human]] [[Neo-Knights|Neo-Knight]] [[Rapture]], Unicron's systems were attacked by the electrical powers of [[Circuit Breaker]]. Enraged that he had been made to feel pain, Unicron dispensed with his hands-on approach and transformed into planet mode to consume Cybertron, at which point [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] flew into Unicron's maw and opened the [[Matrix of Leadership|Creation Matrix]], destroying the dark god. {{storylink|On the Edge of Extinction!}}

His body destroyed in this timeline, Unicron's essence moved to another plane of reality, and made continued attempts on Primus and Cybertrons across many other realities.

Unicron's next known attempt on Cybertron (chronologically the first documented) was his most famous, occurring in the Earth year 2005. While heading towards the planet, he consumed the small world of [[Lithone]], and then came upon the bodies of several wounded and dying Decepticons, who had been dumped into space following a [[Battle of Autobot City|recent battle]] on Earth. He extended a proposition to the Decepticons' leader, [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], offering to rebuild his body and those of his troops in exchange for their destruction of the Autobot [[Matrix of Leadership]]. Tortured into accepting, Megatron was transformed into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], and his followers became [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]], and the [[Sweeps]].

While Galvatron set about reclaiming leadership of the Decepticons, Unicron arrived at Cybertron, and proceeded to consume the planet's two moons. Outraged that Unicron would do this to a planet that he viewed as his, Galvatron found himself the victim of mental torture by his creator, and ordered to Earth to complete the task given him. The ensuing chase finally climaxed in a showdown on the [[Junkion (planet)|Planet of Junk]], where Galvatron seized the Matrix and returned to Unicron, only to reveal that he intended to use the talisman to make Unicron his slave. Amused by his pawn's arrogance, Unicron transformed into his [[scale|gigantic]] robot mode and ate Galvatron. Unicron then tore into Cybertron, as [[Shockwave]] and the rest of the Decepticons on the planet fought back, to little effect. Unicron swallowed many spaceships, and one, which contained the young Autobot [[Hot Rod]] and his comrades, crashed through Unicron's eye. Hot Rod and Galvatron battled deep inside Unicron, and ultimately, Hot Rod was able to retake the Matrix from the Decepticons. Transformed by its power into [[Rodimus Prime]], he defeated Galvatron and opend the Matrix inside Unicron, destroying his body from within. Unicron's head survived the explosion, however, drifting through space.

In the wake of the 2005 attack, Unicron's head was caught in Cybertron's gravity and became a new moon for the planet, a grisly testament to the satellites he had destroyed. Seeking to locate Galvatron, who had been hurled into space at the conclusion of his battle with Rodimus Prime, Cyclonus and Scourge visited Unicron's head and accessed the remaining databanks there, replaying footage of the final battle that allowed them to extrapolate Galvatron's trajectory and current location. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1}}

In the year 2006, the ghost of the deceased Decepticon [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] reactivated Unicron's head, in order to make a bargain with the Chaos-Bringer - in exchange for Unicron restoring his body, Starscream would recreate Unicron's. Stealing new optic circuits and a transformation cog for Unicron from [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]] and [[Trypticon]], Starscream was then directed to connect Unicron's head to Cybertron, so that the planet could become his new body. Starscream initially attempted to do this by use Trypticon's body, but Trypticon was deactivated by the Decepticons. Unicron restored Starscream's body so that he could finish the task, but Starscream (somewhat predictably, being Starscream) double-crossed the dark god and refused to complete the necessary connections. Just then, explosives set by the Autobots were detonated, hurling Unicron's head off the planet, beyond its gravity, and out into space. {{storylink|Ghost in the Machine}}

Later, seeking a supply of the dangerous particles known as [[anti-electron]]s, Galvatron and the Decepticons travelled to Unicron's head, only to come under attack from the defences of the barely-aware giant. Also present was the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]], [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]], who used components from Unicron's head to create the [[Technobot]]s to fight Galvatron's forces. The Technobot [[Strafe]] disconnected enough of Unicron's internal mechanisms to deactivate his systems. {{storylink|Grimlock's New Brain}}

In the timeline of [[Earth-120185]], Unicron's famous attack on Cybertron occurred in 2006, rather than 2005, but its events played out in essentially identical fashion to those noted above. Rather than become Cybertron's moon, however, Unicron's head floated off through space and crash-landed on the planet [[Junkion (planet)|Junkion]], where he used mind control to force the native [[Junkion]]s to build him a new body out of the planet. At the beginning of 2008, he pulled [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] and [[Death's Head]] into his thrall and used them to re-ignite the stalemated Cybertronian war in order to keep the Autobots distracted from his activities. Ultimately, however, he was defeated by Death's Head and the Autobots. His head was destroyed, and his mind was sealed within the Matrix. {{storylink|The Legacy of Unicron!}}

On New Year's Day 2009, Unicron reached out from within the Matrix and took control of [[Rodimus Prime]]'s body, {{storylink|Edge of Impact}} only to be stopped when [[Kup]] ripped the talisman out of his chest. In 2007, three of his servants, the [[Sparkbot]]s, sought to recreate their master, and tricked the human singing group, the [[Kiss Players (singing group)|Kiss Players]] - [[Marissa Faireborn]], [[Atari Hitotonari]] and [[Shaoshao Li]] - into helping them on their task by telling them that they were gathering the fragments of the so-called "Allspark."

Following the Sparkbots back to the past, Primus unleashed the full firepower of his mobile battle platform's cannon, sealing Unicron's energy and the Sparkbots deep within the planet. He then created the mighty [[Fortress Maximus (RID)|Fortress Maximus]] to serve as a guardian and ensure that the evil being was never again reborn.

In yet ''another'' timeline that followed his destruction in 2005, Unicron's essence was again sent spiralling through time and space, to crash on prehistoric Earth, prior to the conflict known as the [[Beast Wars]] which would occur on the planet. It is unclear if this was a deliberate attempt by Unicron to preserve his power or not, but this "dark essence" seemed to lack any real sentience, suggesting that it was merely Unicron's "power," while his spark remained in his intact head in the future.

The dark essence was discovered by a [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]] known as the Hunter, who recognized the dark god's power, and fashioned from the essence the [[Matrix of Conquest]], a twisted version of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which he used to conquer and rule over an apocalyptic 32nd Century future, under the name "[[Shokaract]]." Resistance against Shokaract resulted in an attempts his opponents to travel back and time and destroy the dark essence on prehistoric Earth, thereby erasing Shockaract from history, but the villains travelled back in time to stop this effort. A massive battle between him and Transformers from throughout the multiverse ensued, but eventually, thanks to the efforts of the [[Covenant]], history was altered so that Unicron's essence never arrived on prehistoric Earth, erasing this timeline - and Shokaract - from existence.

This timeline follows on from the events of the Kiss Players' tale, which concluded with Unicron's lifeforce being sealed within Earth. There it remained for millennia, but with the departure of its guardian, Fortress Maximus, from Earth in 2007, human beings were at some point in the far future eventually able to discover it and attempted to harness it for their own means. This resulted in the devastation of the planet Earth, reducing it to a ruin, but the fame of this "mysterious energy" that had been called "[[Angolmois]]" was far-reaching, and eventurally, the Predacon leader [[Galvatron (BWII)|Galvatron]] attempted to harvest it for himself. Using his massive spacecraft, the [[Nemesis (BWII)|Nemesis]], he sucked all the the Angolmois energy out of the planet and into the craft. However, after the interference of [[Lio Convoy]] and [[Lio Junior]], all the Angolmois energy was sealed into capsules and ejected from the Nemesis as it self-destructed.

Teams of Maximals and Predacons, led by [[Big Convoy]] and [[Magmatron]] respectively, then raced to collect the Angolmois capsules, as their energy effects were wreaking havoc on planets all over the galaxy. They eventually collected all the capsules only to find themselves attacked by the mysterious and freakish [[Blendtron]]s. The Blendtrons, in truth servants of Unicron seeking to engineer his rebirth, proved nearly invincible, and stole the capsules from each team. They released the Angolmois energy and allowed it to possess Galvatron's dead body, restoring Unicron to life in a new form. Unicron proceeded to absorb the last remaining ounce of stray Angolmois energy - the Blendtrons themselves - and left to settle his score with Cybertron. The [[Maximal Elder]], [[Great Convoy]], attempted to hold Unicron off with the entire Maximal armada, but Unicron's fiery serpent mode proved too much and he effortlessly destroyed the armada and Great Convoy along with it. Unicron then possessed [[Vector Sigma]], the mother computer of [[Cybertron]], effectively possessing the planet, and morphed Cybertron into his new body.

Unicron then briefly exited Vector Sigma to deal with the last remaining Cybertronian resistance. Big Convoy, his Maximal new recruits, Lio Convoy and Magmatron all fought side-by-side against Unicron, but all they managed to do was stall him. Big Convoy then powered up his Big Cannon with his own [[Energon Matrix|Matrix]], transforming it into the Matrix Buster. Big Convoy shot Unicron with the weapon, the powerful blast seemingly destroying the Chaos Bringer. Unicron's spirit was then evicted from Vector Sigma, returning Cybertron to normal.

Unicron's next documented appearance began with him floating in deep space, his body shattered and ruined. The conflict that caused his has gone undocumented, but Unicron's next actions were not. Using what energies he had left, he culled Transformers from across the multiverse, gathering them inside his body and pitting them against each other in battle. He feasted upon the sparks of the losers, growing ever more powerful, while weakening Primus in turn. To counter the evil work of his brother, Primus called upon his own army from the multiverse, led by [[Optimus Primal]]. Primal was able to set free the captives inside Unicron and begin a new war between the [[Minions of Unicron]] and the [[Children of Primus]].

This war was ended abruptly when, during the final battle, Unicron disappeared from their reality underneath them, sucked away into the [[Unicron Singularity]] in another [[#Cybertron|universe]].

After successfully devouring the Cybertron of a previously unseen dimension, Unicron sent a group of heralds - incarnations of [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]], [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]], [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]], and [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]] - to prepare the next universe for his coming. As forewarning, he also sent the near-dead body of the [[Optimus Prime (Worlds Collide)|Optimus Prime]] of that other dimension, which was discovered by the Autobots of the next universe.

Unicron was ultimately defeated by [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Jet Optimus]], the combined form of the this universe's Optimus Prime and [[Jetfire (Armada)|Jetfire]], who were infused with extra Mini-Con power. However, during his attack on Cybertron, he had managed to kidnap [[Airazor (Armada)|Airazor]], [[Cheetor (Armada)|Cheetor]], [[Rhinox (Armada)|Rhinox]] and [[Terrorsaur (Armada)|Terrorsaur]], and would see them forged into new heralds in the interim. This universe's [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]], having made a bid for Unicron's power, was standing on the surface of the planet-eater when he was destroyed, and his body was also lost, his spark trapped within Unicron's remains.

====Energon====

His broken body left floating in space after his defeat, Unicron employed the go-between [[Alpha Quintesson]] to see to his continued survival. Alpha Quintesson gathered together a group of Decepticon dissidents and transformed them into "[[Terrorcon (Energon)|Terrocons]]", although he himself was not overly thrilled with his position of enforced servitude. At the same time, Megatron had been using Unicron's powers and internal mechanisms to fashion a new body for himself, unbeknownst to Unicron himself.

Unicron was evidently very active in this dimension at various points in time, although the precisely chronological placement of this activities are unclear.

At some undetermined point in the past of this universe, Unicron was approached by the survivors of [[Planet X (Cybertron)|Planet X]], a world that had been destroyed in a war with the inhabitants of the Giant Planet, [[Gigantion]]. In return for the chance to gain revenge on Gigantion, the survivors swore loyalty to Unicron, and "Planet X" became something of a code-phrase that identified those in the service of the planet-eater.

Unicron's first attack on Cybertron in the present day was an indirect one, over a million years in the making, begun when he opted to disguise his dormant body as Cybertron's moon. From this secret vantage point, he implanted his own cells within the planet, where they germinated and grew into the small race of robots known as the [[Mini-Cons]]. Unicron hoped to use the Mini-cons to increase the ferocity of the Autobot/Decepticon war, and feed off of the energies released in the conflict, but an encounter with a group of time-displaced human children planted the seed of sentience and free will within the Mini-Cons, who ultimately rebelled against their creator and fled Cybertron, crash-landing on the planet Earth.

When the Mini-Cons were reawakened a million years later in 2010, they were detected by the Autobots and Decepticons, who followed their signal to Earth. Unicron also picked up the signal, and dispatched his minion [[Sideways]], an inhabitant of Planet X who would occasionally serve as an avatar for Unicron's spark, to carry on his work. Sideways escalated the conflict by manipulating control of the three Mini-Cons weapons; the [[Star Saber (Armada)|Star Saber]], the [[Skyboom]] shield and the [[Requiem Blaster]], but eventually arranged for all three to be returned to Cybertron, where he stole them and used them to reawaken Unicron.

Shedding his moon disguise and transforming to robot mode, Unicron turned on Cybertron, only to be met with resistance in the form of the united armada of Autobots and Decepticons, and his own Mini-Cons, who had linked together and formed a giant duplicate of his body. Now at all power, however, it was child's play for Unicron to exert control over his creations, and brought the Mini-Cons under his thumb once more. Again, it was thanks to the Autobots human allies - the same children who had been sent back in time and given the Mini-Cons free will in the first place - that the Mini-Cons struggled free of Unicron's control, including the three Mini-Con weapons, who broke free and left Unicron's body deactivated. Believing the threat over, [[Megatron (Armada)|Galvatron]] then challenged with Optimus Prime to their final battle, only for the the hatred and ferocity of their fight to awake Unicron once more. To end the circle of hate that gave Unicron life, Galvatron allowed himself to be consumed by the monster, and in a brilliant flash of light, Unicron apparently ceased to exist.

In truth, however, Unicron had surived, and for the next ten years, continued to consume planets in other regions of space. One such planet was the world known as [[Planet Q]], whose inhabitants fought back by detonating the planet's core in Unicron's face. Badly damaged by the explosion, Unicron fell into a state of dormancy, but the life essence of the planet's ruler - the being who would come to be known as [[Alpha Quintesson|Alpha Q]] - continued to exist within him, and began a not-entirely-sane plan to use Unicron's powers to recreate everything the Chaos-Bringer had ever destroyed. Recreating the armies of Planet Q as "Terrorcons," Alpha Q had them attack Autobot facitlies on Earth and throughout the Solar System to gather the [[energon]] that would be necessary for his plan to work.

Unbeknownst to Alpha Q, Megatron's corpse and spark remained within Unicron, and he slowly siphoned off some of the gathered Energon, allowing him to be reborn in his own new body. To escape Megatron's fury, Alpha Q jettisoned Unicron's head and escaped in it, while Megatron took over Unicron's body, and continued to gather Energon in order to rebuild Unicron to use as his ultimate weapon. As the climax of this plan neared, a joint attack by Alpha Q, the Autobots and their human allies saw all of Earth's Energon channeled into Unicron's head, which Alpha Q then rammed into Unicron's body. The positively-charged Energon of Earth reacted with the negatively-charged Energon running through Unicron, tearing open a fissure in reality leading to a new area of space where planets Unicron consumed were recreated, and sustained through the Energon radiated from Unicron's head, which had now become a glowing red sun.

Unicron's body, damaged once more, lay in the dark reaches near the fissure, and the Decepticons began to raid Alpha Q's new planets for the Energon necessary to revive Unicron again. This time, they succeeded, and Megatron directed Unicron's body to retrieve his head, extinguishing the Energon Sun and killing Alpha Q in the process. But the power of Unicron proved too much for Megatron to control, as Unicron began to take over Megatron's body. In the ensuing battle between Unicron and the super-powered Optimus Supreme, Unicron's body was successfully destroyed.

None of the Transformers were aware, however, that Unicron lived on in two forms: his miniscule Spark, floating in space, and his consciousness, which lay buried in Megatron's mind. With quiet, subconscious nudging, Unicron led Megatron to a massive reservoir of "[[Super Energon]]" beneath Cybertron's surface, which transformed him into Galvatron upon his first exposure. After a series of failed battles, Galvatron proceeded to expose himself to the Super Energon once again, and this time grew to a gigantic height. Unicron seized control of his body again for a new vessel and set out to rejoin with his Spark, but a Primus-empowered Optimus Supreme engaged him in battle once more, and drew all of Unicron's consciousness out of Galvatron and sealed it within his own Spark.

Enraged, Galvatron prepared to destroy Unicron's Spark, but it merged with him, enlarging him again, leading to another battle with Optimus Supreme, this time bolstered by the combined energy of all his troops' Sparks. Meanwhile, Primus merged with the Super Energon, creating a foundling sun which arrived at the site of the battle. Taking control of his body for a brief moment, Galvatron made the decision to plunge himself into the infant sun to rid himself of Unicron's posession. The super energon mass, having now recieved Unicron's spark, ignited into a powerful red sun which gave new life to Alpha Q's worlds.

Primus's plan to trap Unicron in the heart of a new sun failed when the star collapsed into a massive [[Unicron Singularity|black hole]] (somtimes known as the "Unicron Singularity") that threatened the entire multiverse. Unicron's heralds [[Ramjet (Universe)|Ramjet]] and [[Nemesis Prime (Universe)|Nemesis Prime]] arrived on Cybertron, intent on unleashing the [[Dead Matrix]] on Primus's vulnerable essence - as the Matrix was the antithesis of Unicron, so too would the Dead Matrix ensure the destruction of Primus, thereby totally destabilizing the multiverse and reducing it to a sea of entropic chaos. For the first time, it would be possible to Unicron to strike at Primus in all realities simultaneously, ending their cosmic feud once and for all.

Ramjet and Nemesis Prime were ultimately stopped by Vector Prime and allies [[Sentinel Maximus]] and [[Omega Prime]], plucked from the midst of the ''Universe'' conflict by the multiverse-warping energies of the black hole. The Dead Matrix, however, taken by Unicron's servant [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]] and cast into the heart of the black hole, freeing Unicron's spark, which entered the planet [[Yst]] and immediately began to sow chaos and disorder. Re-energized by the hatred and violence than ran rampant on Yst, Unicron formed a new, diminutive body for himself, born into the universe when Yst exploded.

A number of "extra" Constructicons appear at times in the [[Generation 1 (cartoon)|Generation 1 cartoon]]. Most likely these were animation errors or attempts at generic crowd-filling, BUT you never know. Subsequent G1 material HAS added some more official Constructicons to the roster:

*[[Gravedigger]] was a rejected early name for Scrapper, but he appears in one of the [[Find Your Fate Junior|Find Your Fate]] books as a robot based on Long Haul. This was likely some sort of error, but he stands as a named character.

*[[Load Hauler]] is like that member of the Beatles that left before they got famous. He was added retroactively by a Japanese [[E-Hobby]] release as a seventh Constructicon who didn't happen to be there when they were turned evil by Megatron. He's a stylish free spirit who went to Earth with the Autobots aboard the Ark but then went on a walkabout.

*[[Hightower (Classics)|Hightower]] was added to the [[Classics (2006)]] version of the team where he replaces both Mixmaster and Hook in the lineup. Likely not coincidental, his personality appears to be a merger of those two: a poison-loving chemistry set on wheels who feels extreme disdain for his teammates. Whether the upcoming Classics comics will clarify or explicate his addition or personality has yet to be seen.

Thus, the Constructicons were born, and were immediately put to work building a massive radio transmission dish that [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] used to beam a message to Cybertron. In their first act as Megatron's troops, the Constructicons lured Omega away from Crystal City and demolished it, enraging Omega, who pursued the Constructions across the planet. Eventually, he succeeded in capturing them and apparently restored their programming to its original state, but as the group returned to rebuild Crystal City, Omega learned that Megatron's reprogramming could never be undone - the Constructicons were still Decepticons, and more than that, Megatron had given them a new power: the ability to combine their bodies and minds into the giant known as Devastator. In the ensuing struggle with Devastator, the Robo-Smasher attacked Omega's mind. He was able to stop it before the reprogramming was complete, only to wind up losing his emotions. In 1984, the Constructicons joined with Megatron's forces on Earth, and their first mission was an impressive one - Scrapper designed a machine to transfer the other Decepticons' powers to Megatron, and while he battled [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], holding the attention of the Autobots, the Constructicons invaded the [[Ark (G1)|The Ark]] to destroy [[Teletraan I]]. Unfortunately for them, the Ark was protected by the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]], but by merging into Devastator, they became more than a match for their prehistoric foes. The return of the other Autobots and the discovery of Megatron's deception spelled the end of the battle, however, as [[Hound (G1)|Hound]] distracted Devastator with a gigantic hologram, and Optimus Prime blasted the giant at just the right spot to force the Constructicons to disengage. The Constructicons all managed to survive their magma bath mostly unscathed, except for Mixmaster, whose mind was apparently damaged by the experience, as he developed his manic personality and a fondness for repeating his words, which he had not displayed before. Upon learning of the Autobot [[Grapple (G1)|Grapple]]'s solar power tower design, Scrapper and the Constructicons pretended to have defected from the Decepticons in order to help him and [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] construct it, exposing their treachery upon its completion. {{Storylink|The Master Builders}} Later, when the other Decepticons began to suffer from [[Cybertonium]] degeneration, the Constructions - apparently working fine, presumably as a result of their newly-built, Cybertonium-free Earth bodies - took delivery of a shipment of the mineral via the [[Space Bridge]], and as Devastator, failed to stop [[Spike Witwicky]] and [[Carly]] from getting by them and traveling to Cybertron. {{Storylink|Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1}}

In 1985, when Omega Supreme learned that the Constructicons were active on Earth, he arrived on the planet and joined Optimus Prime's forces, biding his time until he could face his former friends again. That chance arose when the Constructions were discovered mining an asteroid, and Omega was dispatched to investigate. Ignoring Optimus Prime's orders, Omega Supreme engaged the Constructicons, and in the battle, split the asteroid in two, revealing that it was an egg of sorts, incubating a monstrous alien creature, which promptly attacked [[San Francisco]] while Omega, ignoring the plight of the city, continued to battle the Constructicons. Optimus Prime then entered the fray, convincing Omega that saving the city was more important than revenge, and forcing the Constructicons to retreat. {{Storylink|The Secret of Omega Supreme}}

The building skills of the Constructicons remained in demand - other creations around this time included an army of drone Transformers created from common Earth cars {{Storylink|Make Tracks}}; various constructs for [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]], including a throne constructed from deactivated Autobots and a massive maze {{Storylink|Triple Takeover}}; and a giant ruby-powered laser cannon {{Storylink|Masquerade}}; but their combing powers soon became a lot less unique with the creation of several new similarly-powered Autobot and Decepticon sub-groups. Devastator was even defeated in battle by the [[Combaticon]] combiner [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]], who [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] specially designed with the ability to combine into [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]] for that eventuality. {{Storylink|Starscream's Brigade}}

In the Earth year 2005, Devastator was the Decepticons' primary weapon in the [[Battle of Autobot City]], tearing through the defenses and walls of the city and battling the Dinobots once more. On the return trip to Cybertron, it was Bonecrusher who advocated the "survival of the fittest" policy that saw many wounded Decepticons ejected from the shuttle, among them Megatron, prompting Scrapper to vote for the Constructions as the new leaders of the Decepticons, arguing that Devastator was the most powerful robot. Hook took great offense to the notion that [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] would make a better leader than them. In the end, Starscream became the new leader of the Decepticons, and the Constructicons, as a sign of no hard feelings, provided the music by playing horns at his coronation. Starscream, desparate to get on with the ceremony, eventually shot their horns, showing that he still had hard feelings. In the remainder of this year and throughout 2006, the Constructions maintained a smaller, but still present, role in the Decepticon army, lending their talents to the Decepticon/[[Quintesson]] alliance by constructing [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] out of a populated human city in only one night. {{Storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4|FFOD, Part 4}} Later, they built a planetary engine on an asteroid and battled on the planet [[Eurhythma]], aided in the overthrow of [[Paradron (planet)|Paradron]] and took part in an attack on [[Japan]]. Although brief, the Constructicons even played a part in the battle for the [[Plasma Energy Chamber]] in [[2007]].

====Origin inconsistency====

The original ''Transformers'' animated series is infamous for its slip-ups regarding the Constructicons, presenting at least three apparently-contradictory stories that give different origins for the group. In their debut episode, the first season finale, "[[Heavy Metal War]]", Megatron professes that the Constructicons were built on Earth. Yet, in the second season episode, "[[The Secret of Omega Supreme]]", the secret history of the eponymous character and the Constructicons comes out, which reveals their past on Cybertron together, where the Constructicons were formerly ''not'' Decepticons and were turned to evil by Megatron. Scrapper also makes a comment in "[[The Master Builders]]" that he admired the buildings of the Autobot Grapple on Cybertron, indicating a past there.

Interestingly, the official [http://transformers.winterchill.com/bible/biblepage57.html bible to the series] originally describes the Constructicons as having "no explained origin." Presumably, this encouraged [[David Wise]], the writer of "The Secret of Omega Supreme", to give the characters an explained origin, unaware that it conflicted with the one-line reference to their being built on Earth from "Heavy Metal War". Nevertheless, it is not impossible to reconcile these two stories, if one simply assumes that when Megatron said the Constructicons were "built", he was referring to their new ''Earth'' bodies after their arrival from Cybertron (ironically, "The Secret of Omega Supreme" neglected to give the Constructicons redesigned Cybertronian modes, making it appear as if they always turned into Earthly construction vehicles). That said, one would have to assume that the Constructicons did not have their existing bodies modified, but had entirely new structures created, due to their ability to function and even form Devastator when the other Transformers on Earth were suffering from Cybertronium degeneration in "[[Desertion of the Dinobots, Part 1]]".

The third contradiction emerges in the third season, with the episode "[[Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4]]", in which [[Rodimus Prime (G1)|Rodimus Prime]] witnesses Megatron's creation in a flashback, and the animation shows the Constructicons surrounding him, implying that they were responsible for building him, which contradicts "The Secret of Omega Supreme"'s claim that they were not originally Decepticons. There are two ways of rationalizing this:

#The Constructicons were not evil when they constructed Megatron. Megatron was either created work-for-hire by the Constructicons, who may have had no idea about how evil Megatron's personality was, Megatron was accidentally created evil or later became evil. He then later corrupted the Constructicons, as depicted in "The Secret of Omega Supreme". And then later, he rebuilt them on earth.
#The scene is a mistake. "Five Faces of Darkness" is notorious for its flawed animation, and it is entirely probable that these characters were not intended to be the ''actual'' Constructicons, but rather either characters who resembled them, or generic robots that the animators simply used the Constructicons' model sheets to fill the roles of. In strong indication of this is the fact that there are ''eight'' Constructicons displayed, rather than six.

The presence of a larger than usual number of Constructicons in the "Five Faces of Darkness" scene was referenced somewhat by the release of '''Load Hauler''', a Constructicon-colored repaint of Grapple, released exclusively by online retailer [[E-Hobby]] in 2003. His biography presents him to have once been a member of the Constructicons, before they were Decepticons, who joined up with the Autobots after Megatron co-opted his team-mates with the Robo-Smasher, and accompanied Optimus Prime's crew aboard the Ark. This in itself is a reference to the anomalous character of '''Hauler''', an Autobot clearly based on the Grapple toy who features in the first animated series episode, but never appears again. Orange in his animated appearance, Load Hauler's bio explains this color discrepancy by presenting Load Hauler as a "highly capricious self-expressionist," who frequently changes his coloration.

The Constructicons are not shown doing much individually in the Headmasters animated series other than acting as infantry for Galvatron. Eight million years before the modern era, the Constructicons were tasked by Megatron to activate Cybertron's planetary engines. When Megatron disappeared into the depths of the planet fighting Optimus Prime, Starscream temporarily took command and had Scrapper prepare a process for the resurfacing of Cybertron, which would transform it into a mobile war-world. Scrapper cautioned against such an action, but Starscream ignored him, and prevented him from stopping it when the process was underway. {{Storylink|The War Within}}. After this, the Constructicons worked on the theory of [[mass intellect]], and succeeded in stabilizing the neural-meshing, creating Devastator. However, the process was not as efficient as the Constructicons believed, as the technical geniuses of the Constructicons did not translate into Devastator, causing him to suffer from a serious "dumbing down" problem. Despite the drawbacks, Megatron was impressed with Devastator's destructive potential. Besides, being intelligent ''and'' powerful was overrated in Megatron's opinion. When Megatron and Optimus Prime were thought to have died in an early test of the [[space bridge]] transport system, and the Autobots and Decepticons splintered into several smaller factions, the Contructicons broke the treaty that had downgraded the combining teams to non-combat status by siding with Ratbat's [[Ultracons]] and battling [[Defensor (G1)|Defensor]]. {{Storylink|The War Within: The Dark Ages}}

It is apparent that the Constructicons were not aboard the Ark when it crashed on Earth four millions years before the modern era, but they did eventually find their way to Earth and joined Megatron's forces there after they awoke in 1984. The Constructicons did not initially have the power to merge into Devastator. That ability was given to them by Megatron after he warped their minds into servitude with the [[Robo-Smasher]].

Millions of years later, in 1984, Megatron had the Constructicons built on Earth to steal high-tech electronic components for his [[Power chip rectifier]] furnace, as well as tunneling under the [[Ark]] to destroy [[Teletraan I]]. Teletraan I, sensing the imminent danger, activated the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]. The Dinobots responded and started pounding on the Constructicons, opening up a lava channel in the process. The battle not going in their favor, the Constructicons pulled out one last trick and combined into the super warrior, Devastator.And then all hell broke loose.

The returning Autobots saw the battle, but were unable to help (due to losing a tournament which prevented them from interfering with the Decepticons). Inside the Ark, Teletraan-I was able to show that Megatron had cheated and the Autobots rushed outside to help the Dinobots. Given the rank of Technology General and gifted with a new bitchin' drill-weapon (not unlike the ones his toy had) and armor, Violen Jygar sent Devastator to the [[Earth]] to steal the [[Zodiac]] before the Autobots could get it. After destroying the World Trade Center (Not cool, man, not cool!), Devastator drilled deep within the planet, reaching the Zodiac's chamber, and went toe-to-toe with [[Dai Atlas]]. He managed to get the Zodiac first and pass it off to [[King Poseidon]]. Devastator had the upper hand in battle until Dai Atlas opened a vein of hot lava upon the Decepticon. Devastator was washed-away in the molten magma, apparently killed by it. Their first mission was to construct a massive communications dish, allowing [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] to broadcast a message to long-lost Cybertron. When the dish came under attack by a squad of Autobots, the Constructions merged to form Devastator, much to the surprise of the attacking Autobots.

Devastator was powerful and tough, but slow and confused as well. Soundwave was connected to the scrambler dish and unable to defend himself; when Huffer threatened to destroy the dish, it took Devastator quite some time to figure out which Autobot Soundwave wanted him to attack ("Destroy Autobot.... which Autobot.... not these Autobots...")

When [[Bomber Bill]] cut Soundwave's connections to the dish, causing feedback which destroyed it, he ordered the Constructions to disassemble and retreat, noting that their performance as a single unit had been "notably deficient." {{Storylink|The Next Best Thing to Being There!}}

Devastator reappeared when Optimus Prime led an Autobot offensive on the heavily fortified Decepticon coal mining base. [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] was monitoring the Constructicons' transformation pattern, and as soon as he successfully recorded it, Optimus Prime ordered a retreat. The Decepticons emerged from the gladiatorial [[State Games]], which caused Megatron's rise to public prominence - in the aftermath of the destructive Vos-Tarn War, Megatron was able to use his fame and charisma to unite both the survivors and the planet's malcontents into a new army. His plan was to turn Cybertron into a mobile cosmic dreadnought and conquer the galaxy. The Decepticons developed new technology to allow them to transform into attack vehicles and weaponry, launching a devastating attack that killed billions and shook the planet from its orbit before the arrival of Optimus Prime turned the tide.

Megatron, Shockwave and others were lost on Earth for four million years; as Optimus was too, the Autobots swiftly lost ground to Decepticon leaders [[Trannis]] and [[Straxus]]. Cybertron was devastated and conquered, causing the cream of the Decepticons to leave the burnt-out planet to form a [[Cybertronian Empire]] out in the stars, while Straxus threw all those he considered weak into the [[Smelting pool]]. The Empire would go on to slaughter and Cyberform planet after planet, their actions unknown on Cybertron.

Eventually the Earth-bound Decepticons would awaken in 1984, sparking off an escalation in the fighting that would see Decepticon leadership fragment and change hands rapidly, with frequent clashes, plots and counter-plots. A brief truce was held when [[Unicron]] attacked in 1991, but immediately after [[Bludgeon (G1)|Bludgeon]] came to power. Charismatic and driven, Bludgeon turned the beaten Decepticons into a new army; after a defeat on [[Klo]], they regrouped and reorganised. ([[Another Time and Place|In one reality, they were immediately massacred afterwards]])

Bludgeon invaded Earth with the intention of capturing the Matrix and making a new generation of Decepticons; Megatron killed him and stole this plan. However, the threat of the Cybertronian Empire forced an alliance between the Autobots and Decepticons again.

In the side-continuity of [[Earthforce]], while Unicron continues on to Cybertron Megatron and Shockwave continue a Decepticon civil war on Earth with a small handful of troops - wasting most of their time trying to take out each other. Eventually Soundwave and Starscream overthrew them, uniting both factions into a stronger Decepticon force. The two former leaders attempted to regain their position but never appeared to succeed.

In the various continuities descending from [[Generation 1]], the Decepticons and the [[Autobot]]s are the two great powers in the Transformer population. The factions, however, are not a complete set -- there are Transformers who are unaffiliated / neutral, or even members of smaller or splinter factions.

Many G1 timelines actually credit [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] as the founder of the Decepticons, not merely its most recent leader. In contrast, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] is almost always depicted as only the latest in a long line of [[Prime (rank)|Primes]] or [[Matrix Bearer]]s.

Eventually, the Decepticons managed to take control of all of Cybertron, forcing the Autobots to operate on Cybertron's two moons, but [[Autobot City]] on [[Earth]] was viewed as the greater threat. The Decepticons overtook a supply shuttle and launched an [[Battle of Autobot City|attack]], with disasterous consequences for the Autobots. The battle saw one of the Decepticons long held dreams achieved in the death of Optimus Prime, but Megatron was damaged, and left to rot in deep space. From this chaos came [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and the [[Sweeps]] who hatch a plan of finding Galvatron who would lead the Decepticons once more.

In the [[Robots in Disguise (cartoon)|''Robots in Disguise'' cartoon]], the Decepticons were a brand new faction that came into being during the events of the story. Because there were so few Decepticons (only six or seven), and because they were a subset of the [[Predacon (RID)|Predacon]] antagonists, they can almost be viewed as a [[subgroup]] rather than a proper faction. The RiD Decepticons were created on Earth when [[Megatron (RID)|Megatron]]'s forces captured a set of [[stasis pod]]s from an ancient Transformer spaceship that had been found on [[Earth]], leading to the birth of the [[Commando]]s and [[Scourge (RID)|Scourge]]. The toy version of [[Megatron (RID)|Galvatron]] was also labeled as a Decepticon, although this "change" in the character's faction was not established in the cartoon series.

In the Japanese version of RiD, ''[[Car Robots]]'', the Decepticons were known as Combatrons. This is the same name by which the [[Combaticon (G1)|G1 Combaticons]] were called in Japan.

The ''exact'' origins of the Decepticon faction is a bit muddled. It is widely assumed, though never directly confirmed, that the movement was founded by [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]]. Also, the enslavement of the power-enhancing [[Mini-Con]]s is considered to be the impetus to the Decepticons' rise to a massive multi-planet-spanning army, though at what point in the war this occurred is unclear; it's possible the Mini-Cons' arrival was what gave Megatron the opportunity to rise to power, or that they arrived after the war had already begun.

Either way, the Mini-Cons fueled the war machine for centuries, and the war with the [[Autobot]]s soon spread from [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to other worlds. The self-imposed exile of the Mini-Cons to an unknown destination was seen as a major setback for the Decepticons (and something of a pyrrhic victory for the Autobots), but despite this, the war continued, as both sides had amassed a large enough power base to continue on without the little buggers.

The Autobots and Decepticons seemed to fight to a stalemate, neither able to gain a distinct advantage over the other. When a signal reached Cybertron centuries later that the Mini-Cons had landed on [[Earth]], it seems neither side was capable of sending a full force to retrieve them, despite the power they contained. Though the Decepticon force sent to Earth was small in numbers, it was far from insignificant; Megatron himself led the squad, backed by some of his most trusted warriors.

When Megatron returned to Cybertron, the overwhelming majority of the Mini-Cons were in the protective custody of the Autobots, but Megatron was unfazed; he had assembled the Mini-Cons required to make the three legendary weapons the [[Star Saber (Armada)|Star Saber]], [[Skyboom (Armada)|Skyboom Shield]] and [[Requiem Blaster]]. Bolstered by this new power and the apparent death of [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]], Megatron attempted to take Cybertron once and for all.

But Megatron's return to Cybertron was the beginning of the end of the Decepticon army. When [[Unicron]] revealed himself as a threat to both armies, fueled by the negative psychic energies from centuries of death and destruction, the two sides eventually joined together to beat back the planet-eater. Despite the truce, Megatron and Prime engaged in a brutal duel on the surface of the weakened Unicron after the three legendary weapons had been removed from his core. Realizing their battle was keeping Unicron active, Megatron sacrificed himself, and both Unicron and Megatron disappeared into nothingness.

Megatron's final orders to his troops still stood: work ''with'' the Autobots. The Decepticons maintained a degree of autonomy, still wearing the faction sigil and often taking military/defensive positions in the growing number of [[energon]]-mining colonies, but they were ultimately answerable to Optimus Prime and the Autobots. There were, of course, dissenters, most of which were captured and imprisoned. For a decade, Autobot and Decepticon worked side-by-side in a somewhat stable truce.

Both sides found themselves the target of attacks from Unicron again; hordes of [[Terrorcon (Energon)|Terrorcon drones]], sent by [[Alpha Quintesson]] to steal energon ore with which to revive the now-shattered husk of Unicron. What the alien did not count on was that Megatron's [[spark]] had survived within the remains, and was siphoning energon from Unicron's body. Soon the Decepticon leader had revived himself in a new form, drove off Alpha Quintesson, and along with an elite cadre of soldiers and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of mindless Terrorcon drones, began his ''new'' plans for conquest.

When news of Megatron's return reached Cybertron, hundreds of Decepticons rose up and rebelled, eager to get back to conquering. But having been joined to Unicon for so long apparently had given Megatron a taste of godhood; he had no more interest in amassing a galaxy-spanning army of troops. Countless Decepticons died in the resulting battles, with Megatron more than willing to sacrifice them without a thought to attain ultimate power for himself. As the "[[Powerlinx Battles]]" -as they came to be called- came to their climax, Megatron found that his actions and thoughts were being influenced and controlled by the dark spark of Unicron. Unwilling to let Unicron stand in his way, Megatron ultimately sacrificed himself (again) and seemingly destroyed Unicron's spark by plunging himself into a newly-formed energon sun created by [[Primus]].

====Cybertron====
What little remained of the once-mighty Decepticon army after [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron's]] loss was at best a loose association of criminals, thugs, and lunatics, with no real political or military power to speak of. For a decade, [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] was once again at peace, with the population overwhelmingly [[Autobot]] or neutral. The Transformers had withdrawn from [[Earth]] and its other colonies to focus on revitalizing their homeworld after the devastation of the Powerlinx Battles. However, two great catastrophes shattered this peace; the energon sun collapsed in on itself, forming the powerful black hole known as the [[Unicron Singularity]], which threatened to devour Cybertron and, if left unchecked, the entire universe... and the return yet once again of Megatron, who had absorbed much of what remained of Unicron's power.

Megatron's goal of attaining godhood was now at hand. By obtaining the legendary [[Omega Lock]] and the four [[Cyber Planet Key]]s, Megatron intended to accelerate the growth of the black hole, consuming the universe in a vast sea of nothingness that only he would survive, then use his powers to re-create the universe in his image.

To this end, he had no need of an army. He gathered a small group of allies and lackeys to seek the items he needed, but they were nothing more than pawns to him, to be used and discarded at a whim.

The Decepticons briefly regained their status as a mass army of individuals when [[Starscream (Armada)|Starscream]], who had long suffered at Megatron's hands since the beginning of the Decepticons, made his own bid for ultimate power with the help of the [[Planet X]] agent [[Sideways]]. Having sealed Megatron and his troops in a trap, Starscream freed hundreds of criminal Transformers who had been locked up on [[Earth]] for millennia, and formed his own globe-spanning army. The Decepticon "Monsters" were tasked with finding the Omega Lock and Earth's Cyber Planet Key, which they eventually brought to their leader. However, numerous Decepticons were killed in the battles with the Autobots, and it soon became apparent that Starscream, like Megatron before him, didn't care. Most of these criminals soon abandoned Starscream and went into hiding.

As for Megatron, he too had deserters among his own considerably-small ranks. Most notably, the powerful [[Scourge (Cybertron)|Scourge]], leader of the [[Jungle Planet]] and the colossal [[Menasor (Cybertron)|Menasor]] from [[Gigantion]], both of whom eventually joined forces with their former enemies the Autobots.

This was not seen as a concern for Megatron, however, as by this time Starscream and his allies were seemingly destroyed on Gigantion, and Megatron (now calling himself "Galvatron" again) had the Omega Lock and all four Keys. What few Decepticons remained loyal to him were too stupid to see what Galvatron had planned, and made perfect distractions as he set his final plan in motion. If they weren't strong enough to survive the coming cataclysm, then so be it.

Ultimately, Galvatron's plan failed, and the Unicron Singularity was sealed. His remaining Decepticons quickly left him, realizing what was likely to have happened to them, and eventually joined the Autobots. After Galvatron's seemingly-final defeat and death in a one-on-one duel with [[Optimus Prime (Armada)|Optimus Prime]] on [[Cybertron]]'s moon, the Decepticons, not knowing when to quit, rose again, albeit in a rather pathetic fashion. Having cobbled together a rather rickety rocket, [[Ransack (Cybertron)|Ransack]], [[Crumplezone (Cybertron)|Crumplezone]] and [[Thunderblast (Decepticon)|Thunderblast]] shanghaied the reluctant [[Thundercracker (Armada)|Thundercracker]], who was ''really'' keen on being on the winning side for once, and flew off to parts unknown as the New Decepticon "Army".

They made it to [[Mars]] before the rocket crash-landed.

Meanwhile, the Autobot [[Wing Saber]] reported form a deep-space recon mission that he thought he had picked up traces of Starscream, seemingly backed up by Sideways and [[Soundwave (Cybertron)|Soundwave]]. The Decepticons are the Transformers who sided with [[Megatron (Movie)|Lord High Protector Megatron]] and attempted to seize the AllSpark. Their numbers ranged from the [[Blackout (Movie)|fanatical]], the [[Barricade (Movie)|violent]], and the [[Bonecrusher (Movie)|fanatically violent]]. The Decepticons overwhelmed the valiant yet peaceful Autobots, and [[Optimus Prime (Movie)|Optimus Prime]] made the desperate decision to launch the AllSpark into deep space. Megatron obsessively followed after it, and disappeared. [[Starscream (Movie)|Starscream]] took over leadership, and began a search for Megatron and the AllSpark. After a while, Starscream began to focus more on the AllSpark, hoping Megatron would remain lost, something the other Decepticons began to suspect.

The Decepticons are, in general, less human in appearance than the Autobots in movie. The comics show that the Decepticons are overstretched on Cybertron: they use [[Transformers Comic issue 1|drone units to bolster their forces]] and many of their outposts are [[Transformers Comic issue 5|mostly automated]].

Often referred to by fans simply as "the movie" or "TFTM", this film opens with characters who had been featured in the first two years of the toyline and associated media (cartoons, comic books, etc.), but quickly introduces new characters and kills many of the old ones to make room. In particular, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] are all destroyed during the course of the film.

The movie was a step up in almost every area from the television series, with a more sophisticated plot, more serious treatment of war and violence, a hugely ambitious scope and a greatly increased animation budget with well-known celebrities providing voice work. For these reasons the film remains very popular with children of the 1980s.

A [[Scale|planet-sized Transformer]] called [[Unicron]] who eats other planets is approaching [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. As part of their continuing wars, the Autobots and Decepticons have a [[Battle of Autobot City|fierce battle]] on Earth which sees both Optimus Prime and Megatron mortally wounded. Prime passes the [[Matrix of Leadership]] to Ultra Magnus and dies, and Megatron is transformed by Unicron into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] (briefly) assumes leadership of the Decepticons, but is killed when Galvatron arrives at Cybertron. Galvatron then chases the surviving Autobots on Earth across space, splitting them up and taking the Matrix. The Autobots find their way back to each other, and follow Galvatron to Cybertron just as Unicron transforms into robot mode and begins to eat their world. Travelling inside Unicron, [[Hot Rod]] recovers the Matrix, transforms into Rodimus Prime, and uses the Matrix to destroy Unicron.

==Full synopsis==

In the first sequence of the film, a mechanical planet called [[Unicron]] is shown travelling through the depths of space, then approaching and destroying another metal planet which has robotic inhabitants, much like [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. During the attack, robots, vehicles, buildings, and even large chunks of rock float off the surface of the planet and spiral into the large "mouth" on Unicron.

The scene then transitions to Cybertron, and the narrator explains that it is the year 2005, and that the [[Decepticon]]s are now in control of the planet. The [[Autobot]]s are preparing to launch an assault to retake the planet from hidden bases on two of Cybertron's moons. The Autobots launch a [[Autobot shuttle|shuttle]] to pick up a final shipment of [[energon]] from [[Earth]] before they strike.

Plans for the attack are overheard by [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]], who reports back to Megatron. The Decepticons attack the Autobot shuttle en route to Earth, wiping out its crew (including [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] and the [[Brawn (G1)|guy in the picture up there]]). Using the Autobots' own shuttle, the Decepticons are able to get very close to the Autobots' base on Earth, [[Autobot City]], before they are detected, and begin a devastating surprise attack on the unprepared city.

During the battle at Autobot City, both [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and Megatron suffer mortal injuries, and a number of other characters are also killed. Eventually the Decepticons retreat, but the damage suffered by the Autobots has been severe.

Shortly after the battle, Prime lies on his deathbed. He passes the reins of leadership to [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and gives him the [[Matrix of Leadership]]. (Though Hot Rod actually touches the Matrix before Magnus does.) Prime relates a prophecy: "One day, an Autobot shall rise from our ranks, and use the power of the Matrix to light our [[darkest hour]]." He then gives the oath, "[['Til all are one]]", and dies. This sequence of events is observed remotely by Unicron, who appears unusually concerned by the survival of the Matrix.

The Decepticons are making their escape aboard [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], but are too heavy for him to get them all home under his own power. After putting the matter to a fair vote, the Decepticons decide to throw their injured members off the ship to better the chance of survival for the rest. One of the most severely injured Decepticons is Megatron. Starscream tosses him out and claims leadership of the Decepticon army.

Megatron and the other adrift Decepticons then encounter Unicron in interstellar space. Unicron offers to rebuild Megatron and his men in exchange for their service. Megatron agrees, and is [[reformatting|reformatted]] into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. The other Decepticons are turned into [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]], and the [[Sweep]]s. Unicron provides them with a [[Galvatron's ship|ship]], and sends them to kill Ultra Magnus and destroy the Matrix, stating that the Matrix is the only thing which can stand in his way.

Galvatron first stops at Cybertron to take his revenge by killing Starscream and reclaiming leadership of the Decepticons. Almost immediately afterwards, Unicron arrives in Cybertron's vicinity and devours at least two moons{{m-}}both of the Autobots' moon bases are destroyed. Under coercion by Unicron, Galvatron finally heads to Earth to kill Ultra Magnus, but Magnus and the other surviving Autobots flee in a pair of shuttles. Eventually Galvatron manages to cause one shuttle to crash on yet another metal planet ([[Quintessa]]), and detonates the other with a volley of missiles. However, the Autobots in the second shuttle escape unnoticed by separating the front portion of their shuttle just before impact.

The Autobots in the crashed shuttle, [[Hot Rod]], [[Kup]], and the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]]s, find themselves separated and in a hostile environment. Hot Rod and Kup are captured by a squad of [[Allicon]]s and taken before a [[Quintesson]] [[Quintesson judge|judge]] and his court. While being held there, they learn the name and nature of Unicron from [[Kranix]], a survivor of the planet destroyed in the opening of the film, which he calls [[Lithone]]. Meanwhile, the Dinobots encounter and befriend a young, wild Autobot named [[Wheelie]] who has been living alone on Quintessa. Together, they crash the trial just as Hot Rod and Kup are fighting losing odds against the Quintessons' [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticon]]s. The tide is turned, and the Autobots commandeer a [[Quintesson ship]].

The other group of Autobots has landed on the planet [[Junkion (planet)|Junkion]] to make repairs, but are attacked yet again by Galvatron, who was tipped off to their survival by Unicron. During the battle, Ultra Magnus tries to open the Matrix to use its power, but is unable to do so, and instead is killed. Galvatron absconds the Matrix, taking it away to Unicron. The remaining Autobots{{m-}}[[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], [[Springer]], [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]], and [[Spike Witwicky|Spike]]'s son [[Daniel Witwicky|Daniel]]{{m-}}are then ambushed by [[Junkion]]s, the eponymous natives of Junkion, who are also giant transforming robots. This battle is cut short, however, by the arrival of Hot Rod's group in their Quintesson ship. After exchanging the [[universal greeting]] they all make friends, and the Junkions restore Ultra Magnus to life. Together, the whole group travels to Cybertron to try to recover the Matrix.

Galvatron attempts to open the Matrix to use its power against Unicron, but is also unable to get it open. Unicron, not pleased with this attempted treachery, shocks Galvatron by transforming from a planet into a [[Scale|planet-sized robot]]. Unicron plucks Galvatron off his chest and swallows him, Matrix and all, and then begins attacking Cybertron itself. [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] scrambles the Decepticon forces to defend the planet, but they are ineffective against so large an enemy. Shortly the Autobots arrive from Junkion, and fly the Quintesson ship straight through Unicron's eye. This impact destroys the ship, and the Autobots fall out inside Unicron. Hot Rod, separated from the others, eventually runs into Galvatron. During their fight, Hot Rod gets his hands on the Matrix and hears Optimus's voice speak the words, "Arise, Rodimus Prime." Hot Rod grows in stature, adopts a much sterner demeanor, and quickly dispatches Galvatron by tossing him through Unicron's hull out into space. He then opens the Matrix, which fills Unicron with light and begins destroying him.

In the meantime, the other Autobots inside Unicron have located some of their comrades from the moon bases who had been presumed dead, including [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and Daniel's father, Spike. The Autobots, including Rodimus, escape through Unicron's remaining eye just as he begins to fall apart and explode. The scene then immediately shifts to the surface of Cybertron, where{{m-}}for unclear reasons{{m-}}the Autobots seem to be in charge again. Rodimus predicts an era of peace and prosperity, and the film closes with a shot of Unicron's severed head still floating in orbit around Cybertron.

==Significance in Transfandom==

''The Transformers: The Movie'' remains one of the most important elements of the entire Transformers brand, both within the fiction and from the perspective of the brand's popularity and "mindshare".

Fictionally, it established several story concepts that have been used repeatedly in the years since 1986, some of which{{m-}}such as Unicron and the Matrix{{m-}}are now central to the entire Transformers mythos. The movie is also the centerpiece of the most well-known Transformers continuity: the G1 animated universe. The G1 cartoon is split into "pre-movie" and "post-movie" sections which feature different characters and settings, and even somewhat different visual styles. (Most pre-movie episodes were animated by the studio [[Toei]], while most post-movie episodes were animated by [[AKOM]].)

On a practical note, it was widely available on videotape, and remained so long after the Generation 1 cartoon had gone off the air. Only a handful of series episodes were available on video, making ''The Transformers: The Movie'' the logical choice for someone looking to pick up a ''Transformers'' cartoon; this made it far more well-known among fans than any particular cartoon episode.

To an entire generation of young fans, the movie was the most visually spectacular and narratively epic ''Transformers'' experience of their entire youth. Events such as the death of Optimus Prime are widely reported to have reduced many kids to tears. It is hardly a surprise that these emotional experiences embedded themselves deeply in many fans' memories.

==Criticisms==
All this is not all to say that the movie is a "masterpiece", exactly. The film displays an arguably cynical attitude towards itself as [[To sell toys|a vehicle for advertising toys]], especially in the way beloved characters are killed{{m-}}sometimes gratuitously{{m-}}for sake of justifying the story's focus on a new group of toys. (Note that the poster at the top of this article features ''only'' new characters.) Further, the two primary plot devices{{m-}}[[Unicron]] and the [[Matrix]]{{m-}}have no prior establishment in the fiction. Unicron is given no backstory or justification; he simply exists, and is very dangerous, and is afraid of the Matrix, all for no adequately explained reason. The introduction of the Matrix itself is a heavy [[retcon]]. The story asks the audience to accept that this cosmically powerful artifact has been in Prime's possession all along (even though an X-ray of Optimus Prime's innards in the second season episode "[[A Prime Problem]]" show absolutely no signs of said Matrix), but has somehow never been relevant before.

Finally, the movie bears many similarities to ''[[Star Wars]]'': There are several character-parallels (Springer is a Han Solo-type and Arcee even has Princess Leia's hairdo!), the primary threat is similar (it's the Death Star... but it transforms!), and both feature a climactic battle where the young hero hears the voice of his wise mentor one last time before saving the day. To be a bit more fair to ''The Transformers: The Movie'', however, most of these similarities are either superficial (Arcee's Leia-hair) or can be seen as elements common to thousands of years worth of epic storytelling through human history, not just common to ''Star Wars''.

Though most likely coincidental, the movie also bears many similarities to the Marvel Comics ''Fantastic Four'' story "The Galactus Trilogy":

* The presence of an enormous world-devouring cosmic entity that threatens to destroy the heroes' home planet (Galactus/Unicron).

* The presence of a single item that is the only thing that can stop said cosmic entity (Ultimate Nullifier/Matrix of Leadership).

* The presence of a herald of said cosmic entity, who ultimately betrays the entity (Silver Surfer/Galvatron).

==Trivia and controversies==

This film was one of the last professional performances by [[Orson Welles]], if not the very last. According to production materials shown at [[BotCon 2000]] by Tim Finn, the voice recording sessions for ''The Transformers: The Movie'' were done on September 10 and 11 of 1985. Welles died on October 10 of that same year. It has often been speculated that Unicron's last line ("Destiny... you cannot destroy my destiny...!") was recorded by another actor{{m-}}possibly [[Leonard Nimoy|Nimoy]]{{m-}}because it sounds different than the other lines. This speculation has been quashed by statements by Transformers voice director [[Wally Burr]].[http://cybertronchronicle.freewebspace.com/60-astrominutes/wally_burr_3.html]

The Dinobot [[Snarl (G1)|Snarl]] is mysteriously absent from almost the entire movie (maybe he was scared of getting killed off), even though the Dinobots as a group are featured prominently. It is unclear why this is the case, but one possible explanation is that copies of the script which have come into fans' hands repeatedly list the Dinobots but never make mention of Snarl by name. In fact, at one point the script refers to "the four Dinobots". Despite this, Snarl does appear in three very brief shots, although he has no lines and no action.

Also curiously absent are the 1985 Autobot cars and Mini-Vehicles, such as Inferno, Smokescreen, Cosmos, Warpath, etc. It would seem that these characters were available at the time of the movie:
* Perceptor and Blaster both debuted at the same time in the cartoon as the 1985 cars, and both play prominent roles in the movie.
* Grapple is seen ''very'' briefly during the battle for Autobot City.
* The 1985 Decepticons (Astrotrain, Dirge, etc.) appear in the film.
Tracks, Red Alert and Smokescreen all appeared in storyboards but not the finished film.

With the exception of Starscream, Unicron, and possibly Shockwave, only the Autobots suffered causalities in the movie. All of the other "dead" Decepticons from the Autobot City battle were rebuilt into Galvatron's new troops, and although more Decepticons were shown taking heavy damage and suffering huge casualties while fighting Unicron, their identities and their condition are uncertain. Additionally, both Starscream and Unicron survived in the post-movie series in some form or another. Shockwave's death in the finished film is highly uncertain, although in the script it is fairly strongly implied. He does make some appearances in crowd shots in later cartoon episodes, but these may be examples of the fairly common animation errors in those episodes.

Originally, Ultra Magnus's "death sequence" on Junkion called for him to be lassoed and drawn and quartered by the Sweeps' energy beams, but this was deemed too graphic for audiences, hence the less disturbing "shot to death" sequence seen instead. There is evidence that the original sequence had been fully animated when the decision was made, however; the Sweeps still kept their solid energy lassos when they fire upon Mags, and Mags is seen visibly straining against what appears to be said lassos (edited out and replaced with laser fire) before exploding.

A number of other sequences were storyboarded but dropped, presumably without ever being animated. Most notable among these was a scene that would have shown the Autobots finally bringing down Devastator with a barrage of missiles (and the Constructicons subsequently shooting Red Alert in the back), and the Decepticons dogpiling Optimus Prime, explaining why he seems to be standing up just before his fight with Megatron.

In Hungary, the movie has two dubs. One of them ancient and unprofessional, the other more fresh and more professional. The second and more disliked one has a reputation among the fans for including more profanities than the original version of the film. Although Spike's "Oh, shit'" line was cut, Ironhide, Galvatron and the Dinobots say thins like "assholes", "jerk", "stupid", "rotten", and "ass-wipes" (this one even twice, when referring to the Decepticons). Quite interesting, seeing as the dubs produced in that era have been known for freeing the movies of their swear words. These dubs are also infamous for using untranslated or incorrectly translated names, and random voice actors for random characters with random voice-pacing. These names include Unicornis (Unicron), Mega-robot (Devastator), Constructors (Constructicons), Deceptors (Decepticons), and Jettison (probably derived and mis-interpreted from the line "Jettison some weight."). The DVD case has G.I. Joe pictures printed on it, as well as the DVD itself. Spiffy. It's also worth noting that Bumblebee in the 2007 movie has the same voice he had in the second dub of TFTM. Probably a coincidence, since that guy supported half of the voices for the cast back then...

Rumors have occasionally circulated in the fandom of additional animated footage that was dropped from the film, such as ultra-violent battle scenes. No evidence has ever surfaced to back these claims; the only known edits are those [[#Formatting and Edits|listed below]].

==Animation Errors==
There are a few notable animation errors in the movie:
* When Ultra Magnus accepts the Matrix, he's seen inserting it into his chest twice. (Some fans have joked that Mags was forcing the Matrix inside him, as another sign that it had chosen Hot Rod as the new leader and rejected him.)

* Swoop's lower leg appears for a brief second during the Autobot City battle, long before the rest of him gets there.

* Not so much an error, but if you watch Sludge when he's haymaker'ed by Devastator, his eyes pop out of their sockets in Looney Tunes fashion.

* When [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] sends [[Rumble (G1)|out]] [[Ratbat|his]] [[Frenzy (G1)|casette]] [[Ravage (G1)|troops]], [[FIBRIR|Rumble is the same color as Frenzy]].

* Sunstreaker appears with Huffer, Bluestreak and Kup when they observe Hot Rod firing on Ironhide's shuttle. Sunstreaker later appears as Optimus Prime's co-pilot when they arrive with the Dinobots, and is seen disembarking the shuttle along with Optimus Prime and Hound.

* Hot Rod has at least two totally different transformation schemes during the course of the film.

* When Hot Rod tells the Junkions the universal greeting, the Autobot insignia on his chest is coloured black.

== Continuity Errors ==

* Despite running out of energon goodies on Quintessa, Hot Rod has at least one to offer to the Junkions. Maybe he got some on the ship.

==Formatting and Edits==

Although it was billed in some advertisements before its theatrical release as being "widescreen", the movie was in fact animated in a 4:3 (fullscreen) aspect ratio. For its theatrical screenings, the film was matted down in the projector by the projectionist to a 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen), chopping the top and bottom off the picture, but all video transfers of the movie were done without mattes, meaning that there was actually more picture visible in the fullscreen video and DVD releases than there would have been in theaters. Across 2006 and 2007, new editions of the DVD of the film were released by Sony BMG and [[Metrodome]] which applied the mattes in order to replicate the original theatrical presentation of the film for the first time in home entertainment. Some fans, however, didn't realize that the film wasn't actually ''animated'' in widescreen, and, hearing that the DVD was to be in widescreen, expected to see the fullscreen image with additional footage at the sides, causing them to complain that the top and bottom were cut off, thereby totally missing the point.

Several English-language versions of the film exist, with the following differences in content from the American theatrical run:

* In some versions (notably the European version) the opening credits are replaced with a scrolling text ("''Star Wars'' style") which provides backstory.

* In some versions (notably the European version) the film ends with a narrator reassuring the audience that Optimus Prime will return.

* Instances of swearing in the film (there are two) were edited out; sometimes one, sometimes both. Those instances are: Spike yelling, "Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?" after the self-destructing Moon Base 2 fails to scratch Unicron, and Ultra Magnus growling, "Open, damn it, open!" while trying to open the Matrix to fend off Galvatron and the Sweeps on Junkion. The United Kingdom cinema version had the swearing included but, when it was released on VHS in the United Kingdom, Spike's line was cut. However it has been restored on all United Kingdo DVD releases.

*Instead of DEG, the Rank Film "gong man" appears before the film, as Rank were the United Kingdom distributors.

==Commercial Releases==

* The movie was originally released in North America on home video in 1987 by Family Home Entertainment, minus Spike's swear. Not long after, it was releasd in the UK by Video Gems. This version featured the opening text crawl and closing narration inherent to the UK version of the film. In Australia, the film was releaed on video by RCA/Columbia Pictures/Hoyts. In Japan, Hillcrane released a Laserdisc version alongside a VHS copy.

*The movie was realeased spottily in the 90s, beginning with a budget VHS by Avid Home Entertainment in 1991. Malofilm released a VHS in Canada in 1995, notable for being the first home entertainment version to include Spike's swear. In 1998, Japanese company Pioneer produced another pair of Laserdisc and VHS releases. In 1999, things kicked off when American company [[Kid Rhino]] secured the Transformers license and released the film on VHS once again.

*The 21st century's flirtation with ''The Transformers: The Movie'' started with a UK budget VHS release of that country's version by [[Maverick Entertainment]]. A Japanese company called CatCo followed this up with a VideoCD, and Malofilm{{m-}}now Seville{{m-}}were the first to release a DVD version of the film, though it was just a dump of their VHS version.

*In November 2000, ''The Transformers: The Movie'' got its first, full professional DVD release from Kid Rhino. This edition, labelled a "Special Collector's Edition", is the first to feature remastered video and audio, and several special features, including storyboards and an interview with [[Vince DiCola]]. Rhino concurrently released this version on VHS, sans extras.

*In 2001 in the UK, Maverick Entertainment released their own much-delayed DVD version of the film. It was the UK version of the film, but included Spike's swear. However, the release was burdened by badly interlaced video, though notably included the [[StarTV]] dub version of the ''[[The Headmasters (cartoon)|Headmasters]]'' episode "[[Four Warriors Come out of the Sky]]" as an extra. This version (including the ''Headmasters'' episode) was simultaneously released on VHS.

*The movie was released on DVD in Australia in 2003 by [[Madman Entertainment]], using the same video as the Maverick version, but distinguished by some nifty new cover art by [[Don Figueroa]], and special features not seen on other editions, such as [The Touch]] music video and 80s TV spots.

*After acquiring the license to release ''Transformers'' DVDs in the UK, [[Metrodome]] focused on completing their run of series box sets before turning their attention to the movie properly, releasing only a cheap budget DVD of the UK version through Prism Leisure with no extras, and a UMD of the same version.

*In 2005, Metrodome released "Transformers: The Movie - Reconstructed", a new version of the film designed to expose as much of the animated picture as possible. This, however, only resulted in exposing the rough, unfinished edges of the animation, and an overly pale remaster was compounded by excessive interlacing due to an unnecessary NTSC to PAL transfer. This, coupled with a 5.1 remix from [[Magno Sound]], featuring the same extra sound effects that they added to Rhino's season box sets, made this release both controversial and disappointing to many. This was the first time that the US version of the movie was released in the UK, and the first to feature the US poster art as a cover (although a Silverscreen store exclusive version of the disc included a reversible cover with the UK poster art as well). Extras include trailers, TV spots, the character biographies from the Madman release, and a subtitled version of "[[Four Warriors Come out of the Sky]]".

*For the movie's 20th anniversary in 2006, new license holder [[Sony]] BMG released a two-disc special edition of the film, featuring both a high-quality widescreen remaster and the original fullscreen version, audio commentaries from crew and fans, several new featurettes interviewing those involved in the movie's production, storyboards, tv spots, American and Japanese commercials and more. Most notably, this version included the first Western release of "[[Scramble City]]", albeit silent and unsubtitled, featuring only audio commentary. This release featured two covers by Don Figueroa: one is of the '84-'85 cast that appear in the movie, and one is of the movie's new characters, available either as a lenticular hologram that switches between the two, or as a reversible sleeve with the images printed on either side.

*Delayed a bit to coincide with the hype for the 2007 [[Transformers (2007)|live-action movie]], Metrodome also released a two-disc "Ultimate Edition" with a different widescreen master. Like "Reconstructed", this version used the US edition of the film, but this time, the UK version was also included, in fullscreen, on the second disc. Extras include TV spots, commercials, the Madman biographies, storyboards, commentary, Scramble City (with audio and subtitles), featurettes with [[Flint Dille]] and [[Peter Cullen]], and more. The double-disc edition was sold in a steel case featuring new art by [[Andrew Wildman]], with the UK poster art adorning the standard case inside. Various store exclusives were available, including postcards from Play.Com, a reversible cover with the US poster art from HMV, art cards from Virgin Megastore and posters from Woolworths and Toys R Us. It was also available in an extra-less single-disc version.

*Madman produced their two-disc special edition through some collaboration with Metrodome, and consequently it features much of the same content, with additional extras taking the form of The Touch music video and a bonus episode of ''[[Beast Wars (cartoon)|Beast Wars]]''. This release again features cover artwork by Don Figueroa, specifically the cover of [[IDW]]'s ''[[Transformers: The Animated Movie]]'' adaptation.

==Comic Adaptations==
*[[Transformers: The Movie (Marvel Comics)|A comic adaptation of the movie]] was published by [[Marvel Comics]] in 1986, concurrently with the movie's theater run. It was based off a non-finalized version of the script, and differs in many details from the final film. Additionally, most of the major character models (and possibly their unedited original character write-ups) appear in Issue #4 of the ''[[Transformers Universe (Marvel Comics)|Transformers Universe]]'' series.

*A four-part adaptation was released in 2006/2007 by [[IDW Publishing]], as part of the film's 20th anniversary celebration. It was titled ''[[Transformers: The Animated Movie]]'' to differentiate it from the [[Michael Bay]] [[Transformers (2007)|live-action film]]. Unlike its predecessor, it adheres rigidly to the script and plot of the finished movie.

==Soundtrack==
Released on Scotti Bros. Records, the soundtrack to the movie was made available in both vinyl LP (long-playing) record form and audio cassette. At an undetermined point in the 90's, it was released on CD as well (there are no new markings on the CD booklet or outer case to indicate when the CD was released).

In 1997, the newly-formed [[3H]] produced as a [[BotCon 1997]] [[exclusive]] a double-CD set called ''[['Til All Are One (CD)|'Til All Are One]]''. The second disc contains the all of the background score (by Vince DiCola) that was not on the original soundtrack, including several "alternate" pieces for scenes that used songs from the original soundtrack, plus "[[Legacy]]", the audition piece that got Vince the job. Other albums released by 3H which include music from the movie are ''BotCon 97: The Concert'', ''The Protoform Sessions'', ''Artistic Transformations'', and ''Lighting Their Darkest Hour: The Complete Music Score''. All of these 3H albums are long since sold out.

On May 29, 2007, Legacy Recordings re-released the soundtrack in a 20th Anniversary Edition containing the above tracks from the original 1986 release plus these additional tracks:
