==Synopsis==
Primal checks on Cheetor, who is napping after he collapsed in front of the Maximals' current base, heavily damaged from the fight with the [[Predacon (BW)|Predacons]]. After making sure Cheetor's okay, Primal has a discussion with Rattrap, mentioning that Cheetor has refused to use the CR Chamber. Rattrap figures he wants to prove something, but Optimus is suspicious. He decides to discuss it with Cheetor in the morning, while Rattrap decides to take a little rat nap.

[[Image:Feral Scream 2 Cheetor mutate.jpg|left|200px|thumb|The [[JaAm]] proceeds to mutate Cheetor.]]
Cheetor doesn't sleep soundly, though. From the cat's chest, a strange appendage grows, and Cheetor dreams of himself revealed to (and reviled by) the other Maximals (except Optimus) as an ugly, mutated monstrosity. Cheetor awakens, glad his dream was unreal, but finds himself caught in a green light expanding out of his spark.

Rattrap, awakened by the noise, heads to the lower level to see what's wrong. Before he reaches Cheetor's room, a large cat monster bursts out of it and knocks Rattrap over, then rushes away. Optimus comes to help Rattrap, who (incorrectly) assumes that the big ugly monster has gotten Cheetor.

In the Predacon base, Megatron hears the roar of the roaming beast and checks the radar. He figures out that Cheetor has been upgraded, explaining who his nemesis from the most recent battle was. Waspinator is sent to capture the cat-bot.

[[Image:Feral Scream 2 Optimus mean.jpg|right|200px|thumb|See this? This is my unhappy face.]]
Silverbolt returns to the Maximals' base, having failed to locate Cheetor (and jealous of Blackarachnia's concern for the feline). Having already surmised what is going on, Optimus confronts Depth Charge, and forces an account of the relevant events out of him. Depth Charge explains that Cheetor removed some device from the Predacon machine, but was caught in the overload. Depth Charge also says that he destroyed the transmetal driver.

[[Image:Feral Scream 2 Dinobot Waspinator.jpg|left|200px|thumb|Dinobot II and Waspinator watch a train go by.]]
Awakening in a cave, Cheetor finds himself back in his usual Transmetal form again, completely repaired, but with fragmented, disturbing memories of what happened the previous night. Later, Dinobot and Waspinator find the cave, and after shredding Waspinator, Dinobot proceeds to hunt the Maximal. But inside the cave, he finds Cheetor has already left.

Optimus orders the Maximals to search for Cheetor in [[Grid Alpha Two]], but Cheetor shows up outside the Maximal base. He tries to explain that he's taken care of "the monster". Optimus, being less gullible than Cheetor is clever, indicates he wants Cheetor to take him to the creature's remains. Away from the other Maximals, Primal and Cheetor talk, but before Cheetor can admit the truth, Primal's chest is fried by Dinobot.

[[Image:Feral Scream 2 Cheetor Waspinator.jpg|right|200px|thumb|Why are teenagers so freaking cocky?]]
The emotional stress of Cheetor's concern tears the cat back into his Transmetal 2 form, and he easily blasts away Waspinator away. The two Transmetals 2 duel with each other, slashing each other in their beast modes. When Rattrap and Silverbolt arrive, Dinobot is smart enough to retreat.

Optimus reaches out to the feral Cheetor, coaxing him back to his senses. Back at the Maximal base, Cheetor tries to keep his cool while he flirts with Blackarachnia. Cheetor misinterprets her affection as something personal, when really she's more interested in his technology—and how she can [[Crossing the Rubicon|get some of it for herself]].
:—<s>Rebellious teen</s> Transmetal 2 Cheetor seems to have quite an attitude.

==Notes==
*It's pretty stupid of the Maximals not to realize that the robot cat that came from Cheetor's room actually is Cheetor.
*Instead of following Megatron's orders and attempting to bring Cheetor back to the Predacon base, Dinobot tries to "neutralize" him.

===Technical/animation glitches===
*During his fight with Cheetor, Dinobot's large plate that covers his beast-mode crotch seems to be moving and stretching together with his right leg.

===Continuity Errors===
*The scratches that Cheetor inflicted on Megatron's chest plate in the previous episode have switched from his right side to his left side.

===Real-world references===
*In response to a threat from Dinobot II, Cheetor says, "I don't think so." While perhaps not an intentional reference, that was something of a catchphrase for Bob on [[Mainframe Entertainment]]'s ''ReBoot''. [[Ian James Corlett]] (Cheetor) voiced the character during its third and fourth seasons.
*There is a possible nod to the film [[wikipedia:Jurassic Park (film)|Jurassic Park]] during Cheetor and Dinobot's fight. In the film velociraptors were said to be able to move at cheetah speeds. Apparently Cheetor felt that the scientific inaccuracy was an insult and thought he would prove the film makers wrong.

===Transformers references ===
*Back in "[[Call of the Wild]]", the Maximals were driven feral while in their beast modes, just as Cheetor is here.

===Trivia===
*The contents of Cheetor's room:
** A photo of himself and Primal from the first season.
** A big trophy with a Predacon insignia on the base.
** A model of solar system with haphazardly-orbiting planets.
** What could possibly be a model of a [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertronian city]].
** A photo of Blackarachnia.
** A potted plant.
** Three spare tail-clubs.
** A miniature model of the ''[[Axalon (BW)|Axalon]]''.
** A clock with a kind of holographic display to indicate the stages of a Solar cycle.
** A model Douglas DC-3.
*During Cheetor's nightmare, after Blackarachnia says "it's hideous," Rattrap makes motions as though he's going to puke.
*Megatron's observation that Cheetor is moving at Mach 2 seems a bit absurd. Yes, turning Transmetal 2 is portrayed as one heck of an upgrade and Cheetor has a rocket on his back, but a quadruped running at that speed is still fairly ridiculous.
*Waspinator was able to find Cheetor, while Silverbolt didn't. So Waspinator is a better tracker than Silverbolt? More likely, Megatron's scan of Cheetor's "moonlight stroll" narrowed the search zone, whereas the Maximals had no information about his trajectory.
*[[Cybertronix]]
**The text under Rattrap's monitors is mirrored at first, but doesn't say anything particular notable.
**Unsurprisingly, the text which flashes briefly on Megatron's monitor when he asks for magnification says "MAGNIFY".
*Waspinator has a sling when he tells Dinobot to "stand aside, Waspinator will take kitty-bot to Megatron." Apparently his arm was hurt just a little bit worse than the rest of him when Dinobot turned him into confetti.
*Optimal Optimus does two distinctive ape-like things when he transforms to beast mode. Namely scratching and showing interest in a bunch of bananas.
*Cheetor is able to almost completely dominate Dinobot in their fight, despite Dinobot's ability to take down both Depth Charge and Optimus Primal with little effort. Whether this is beast instincts or Cheetor is just that much stronger in his new form can be speculated upon.
==Synopsis==
[[Image:Crossing the Rubicon Blackarachnia driver.jpg|left|200px|thumb|Seriously, they never do get a break.]]
Some distance from [[Mount St. Hilary]], [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]] is setting up some equipment that will convert her into a [[Transmetal 2]]. However, [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]] detects Blackarachnia's [[energy signature]], and, not understanding, pulls her from the machine. As Blackarachnia berates Silverbolt, she short circuits. Heading to the [[Maximal]] base, Rhinox concludes that the [[shell program]] is starting to degrade, and will erase her [[core consciousness]] if not treated soon. He can remove the shell, but it's never been done before.

Wandering off to think, Blackarachnia is followed by Silverbolt. She maintains that she's still a [[Predacon (BW)|Predacon]], and that becoming a Maximal scares her. Silverbolt points out that she's only a Predacon due to [[Tarantulas (BW)|Tarantulas]], and deep down, she is one of the good guys. The touching moment is ruined when Blackarachnia short circuits again.

[[Image:Shell program.JPG|right|200px|thumb|Nice-looking arcade game.]]
In the lab, Blackarachnia has decided to go through with the procedure. Before she does, there is one last thing to do: transfer the access codes to the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] to [[Optimus Primal]], thinking that he'd have the best chance to keep them from [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]]. They begin the shell removal, but it has safe guards that will destroy Blackarachnia's core consciousness. Rhinox is able to destroy the first one. At his [[Tarantulas's lair|lair]], Tarantulas discovers the removal process. He contacts Megatron, informing him of the situation. Megatron notes that such an act risks destroying [[Teletraan I (G1)|Teletron 1]]'s access codes, and conclude that she gave them to Primal. Tarantulas informs Megatron of his safeguards, but the Predacon leader decides to cause a little more trouble.

[[Image:Crossing the Rubicon Blackarachnia dead.jpg|left|200px|thumb|By Grabthar's hammer, you shall be avenged!]]
[[Inferno (BW)|Inferno]], [[Rampage (BW)|Rampage]], and [[Quickstrike (BW)|Quickstrike]] are sent under Tarantulas to attack the Maximals. Optimus leads [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] and [[Rattrap]] in the defense of the base. Rhinox is almost finished, but two more power surges head for her core consciousness. Rhinox blasts one, but Tarantulas fires a rocket which causes Rhinox to miss the other surge, which hits Blackarachnia's core consciousness and extinguishes her [[spark]]. Rhinox leaves to inform Optimus and allow Silverbolt to be alone. Upon leaving, Silverbolt snarls out "Tarantulas…".

[[Image:Crossing the Rubicon Blackarachnia TM beast.jpg|right|200px|thumb|She's back and she's... uh, she's back!]]
Detecting that his creation is dead, Tarantulas orders the Predacons to break off, as Rhinox tells the others. Gathering around Blackarachnia, they express their regrets over not giving her their full trust, if only for Silverbolt's sake. As Rattrap notices that the Fuzor is absent, Primal realizes what he's planning to do, and the Maximals head to stop him. Unseen, the Transmetal Driver begins to glow. Tracking down Tarantulas, Silverbolt easily defeats him and, with the villain unconscious, prepares to execute him. However, Rampage has been watching this and defeats Silverbolt. Preparing to strike the killing blow, Rampage is stopped&mdash;by Blackarachnia, now a Transmetal 2. Blackarachnia quickly defeats Rampage, and takes Silverbolt back to base.

In the control room, Blackarachnia explains to the Maximals that she saw only [[Dark Awakening|darkness, then a light]], and thought Silverbolt was in danger. Primal points out that her actions weren't very Maximal, but Silverbolt express their gratitude at her return. Blackarachnia warns Silverbolt to stop rushing after her, but to show no hard feelings, [[kiss]]es him, sending a power surge through him and disorienting him.
==Quotes==
"Oh, yeah. Sure. Like you were gonna help the Pred get more power."<br />
"Maximal or Predacon, you're one of us! You should know that by now."
:—'''Blackarachnia''' and '''Optimus Primal'''

'''Silverbolt''': You're only a Predacon because of Tarantulas. Inside, you're a Maximal. When this is over, you'll be one again, as you were meant to be.<br>
'''Blackarachnia''': Easy for you to say. You enjoy this hero stuff. Me? I'm a bad girl at heart.<br>
'''Silverbolt''': I know your heart and when I look into it, I see no evil. Only love.<br>
'''Blackarachnia''': Sappy as always. What did I ever see in you anyways? Oh yeah, I remember... ''(leans in for a kiss)''
:- '''Blackarachnia''' has a soft spot for mushy, overdramatic hero types.

'''Rhinox''': How do you feel?<br>
'''Blackarachnia''': Like someone's been playing 'squash the spider' with an Energon bomb.
:- '''Blackarachnia''' gives a cheery view of her symptoms.

''(Blackarachnia is downloading the Ark's access codes into Optimus Primal)''<br>
'''Rattrap''': You couldn't pay me to let that spider inside my processor.<br>
'''Cheetor''': Shut up, Rattrap!<br>
'''Silverbolt''': Listen to him, rat. If you value your spark.<br>
'''Rattrap''': Was...that a threat?<br>
'''Cheetor''': Count on it!
:- Worried suitors have no sense of humor

"See you soon, boys...if you're lucky."
:- '''Blackarachina''' says what she thinks may be her final words.

"Huh?"

"Tarantulas! She's… gone, and it's all because of you! Silverbolt, maximize!"
:—'''Silverbolt''' intends to make Tarantulas pay

"Ahh, the avenging hero!"
:—'''Tarantulas''' on Silverbolt's attack

"Ah, such pain. I must help ''deepen'' it."

''(Silverbolt prepares to impale an unconscious Tarantulas on a feather missile and howls)''<br>
'''Rampage''': Now that's not very Maximal of you. ''(chuckles)''<br>
''(Rampage fires a missile at Silverbolt who blocks it with Tarantulas' body, but is damaged by the blast)''<br>
'''Rampage''': Hmm, this will hardly be any fun at all. ''(points missile launcher right at Silverbolt's face)''<br>
'''Blackarachnia''': Yeah, for you, creepazoid! ''(appears in newly aquired Transmetal 2 form)'' Blackarachnia, Maximize! ''(transforms to new robot mode)''<br>
:— The maiden arrives to save the knight from the monster's clutches... Wait, what?

"Not a very Maximal approach." <br />
"Even when I'm good, I'm still bad."
:—'''Optimus Primal''' and '''Blackarachnia'''

==Notes==
*The Predacons' plan involved the whole Predacon army in a coordinated effort with the sole purpose to kill an incapacitated Blackarachnia so she stays dead. When you think about it, that's one of the more openly diabolical schemes in a cartoon that usually involves battles where the losers limp home to [[CR chamber]]s.
*Blackarachnia's spark produces a sound that's very similar to an electronic heartbeat. It even quickens and slows down at different points.
*Silverbolt isn't just trying to kill Tarantulas, he's trying to kill Tarantulas after the guy is already unconscious and utterly helpless. This is a rather dark take on the character, though one that inadvertently sets up [[Jetstorm (BM)|a plot arc in ''Beast Machines'']].
*Megatron refers to Tarantulas as "lieutenant". A reference to his rank in the Predacon secret police.

===Technical/animation glitches===
*Just as in "[[Proving Grounds]]", when Blackarachnia sits up in the scanning machine, the spider legs on her arms are missing.
*When the Predacons are attacking the Maximal base, Primal first has his blast shields on his shoulders while talking to Rattrap. Then, when the camera goes back to Optimus his blast shields are on his forearms where they are in his Beast Mode (and every other mode for that matter).

===Continuity errors===
*Not only in this episode, but apparently throughout season 3, Blackarachnia (pre-Transmetal) appears to have battle damage (grey areas) which disappears when she's in the base. It also seems that the damage is inconsistent, but in the same areas. Did she get into a fight between getting checked into the base and talking with Silverbolt outside? Or does the bright light of the base conceal her damaged body?
*Optimus Primal says "Maximize" despite already being in battle mode. Instead he changes to flight mode. In past episodes he has said "Optimus Primal - Flight Mode" to do this.
*Optimus Primal says that going off on your own isn't a very Maximal thing to do. Clearly he has not watched even a single episode of [[Beast_Wars_(cartoon)|Beast Wars]], since [[The_Web|Cheetor, Rattrap]], [[The_Agenda_(Part_2)|Silverbolt]], [[Deep_Metal|Depth Charge]], and [[Fallen_Comrades|Tigatron]] have all done so at one point or another.

===Transformers references===
*Megatron's "bath time [[Rubber Ducky|rubber duckie]]" is seen again in this episode, but it has undergone a slight makeover. It now has metallic rings around it and an antenna on its head, probably a reference to the Transformers' Transmetal changes.
*After Tarantulas deduces that Blackarachnia transmitted the ''Ark''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s access codes to Optimus, Megatron notes that "fits in nicely with our little plan for him." That foreshadows [[Master Blaster|the next episode]].

===Real-world references===
*The Rubicon is a river in Italy. During the Roman Empire era, it was illegal for a Roman general to have his army cross it, thus protecting Rome from a military threat. Julius Caesar crossed it and started a civil war which would eventually lead to Rome switching from a republic to an empire. During this, he uttered, "Alea iacta est", latin for "the die is cast". Today, "crossing the Rubicon" is an idiom meaning to go past the point of no return.
*When Blackarachnia goes offline, a flatline, as one from hospital monitoring equipment, can be heard in the background.
*The Maximals seem to treat Blackarachnia's Shell Program as a cancerous brain tumor. Rhinox's description of it, and the risky surgery to remove it, seems to reference that fact.
