:The Rite of the Deceptibrand is a ritual from multiple continuity families.

The Rite of the Deceptibrand is a ritual that is used by the Decepticons and involves branding their symbol into a new Transformer after an oath of loyalty is given. The branding is not exactly a painless procedure.

Fiction
Animated cartoon
Once the Constructicons had proven their use, Megatron allowed them to undergo the Rite of the Deceptibrand to make them true Decepticons. The oath went as follows:

I pledge my unquestioning loyalty to Megatron and the Decepticon cause.
I shall devote my spark to achieving our goal of a Decepticon controlled Cybertron, by any means necessary.
And annihilate all who have driven us from our rightful homeworld.
Surrender is not an option.

Mixmaster and Scrapper recited the oath of loyalty, in response to which Megatron branded them with the Decepticon insignia. A Bridge Too Close, Part I

IDW comics continuity
The Rite can only be formally and officially performed by Megatron or one of the Conclave. According to Drift, they take a part of the subject's spark casing and mold it into one of their badges. Life After the Big Bang

Notes
* During the Rite, the Constructicons also changed color, from a yellow-gray scheme to the traditional green-purple. Whether this is part of the Rite per se is unknown.
The Autobots attempt to round up those crazy Dinobots but the Decepticons interfere....

Synopsis
After finding out that the Dinobots have probably lost control due to their primary cybo-dendrons having burnt out, Optimus Prime assigns the Autobots into teams to capture Snarl, Slag, Sludge, and Grimlock before they can harm any humans.

The B-Team (consisting of Mirage, Brawn, and Trailbreaker) are assigned to Black Rock Desert in Nevada to capture Snarl, which they do (thanks to the help of a prototype molecular disintegration bomb being developed at a secret army base that Snarl destroys). Unfortunately, Laserbeak has been watching, giving the Decepticons knowledge of the Autobots' mission and they make plans to disrupt it as much as possible.

In the waterways of Littlewood, California, Sludge is contentedly being filmed by Joy Meadows while the A-Team (cue music—Windcharger, Gears, and Cliffjumper) look for him. Unfortunately, a Decepticon group consisting of Soundwave, Skywarp, and Scavenger manage to find and knock out Sludge first. Stumbling upon the unconscious Sludge, the A-Team gets taken out by the Decepticons, pleasing Soundwave greatly.

The Decepticon plan suffers a setback when they are too late to capture Slag in Old River Valley, Idaho. A fried Laserbeak tells them of how Jetfire, Jazz, and Ironhide (of D-Team) managed to capture Slag (mainly by blocking Slag's flamethrower with Laserbeak in an attempt to make Idaho Fried Decepticon). However, Soundwave is unconcerned by this setback.

The reason for Soundwave's lack of concern is revealed—the Decepticons have found Grimlock before the Autobots and have set Sludge on him. The town of Doonstown is reduced to a war zone as the two Dinobots fight, plunging into a frozen lake as they do. Bluestreak, Huffer, and Sideswipe are early casualties as they try to stop the fight. Summoned by an urgent S.O.S., Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ratchet, and Prowl speed to the scene. The first three arrive and Prime attempts to keep the Dinobots in the lake while Ratchet goes to tend the members of C-Team and Bumblebee finds a hidden energy source.

The energy source turns out to be a cloaked Autobot shuttle with Windcharger, Gears, Cliffjumper (as prisoners) and a sonic lance on board. Bumblebee rescues the captured Autobots as Prowl transfers his shuttle's electrical systems to the hull and bails out. The shock knocks out Grimlock, but Sludge, still controlled by the sonic lance, lunges for Optimus Prime. Bumblebee realizes that the sonic lance is probably booby-trapped so he blows the shuttle up, causing Sludge to pass out before he can attack Prime.

Nearby, the Decepticons (having found an oil rig to steal energy from) hear the explosion and an elated Soundwave shouts that the Decepticons have emerged triumphant. Optimus Prime hears Soundwave but realizes he can do nothing until his injured Autobots are repaired.
Items of note
* Jazz is seen removing his flame-thrower from a compartment in his hip, in which it is stored in miniaturized form.
* Joy Meadows will team up with the Dinobots again in "In the National Interest" and also appears in Sludge's dream sequence in "Victory!"
* Cliffjumper gets to use his glass gun!
* Bumblebee mentions that he has 8 other senses besides sight.
* Although Jetfire has been featured since UK issue #35, this is the first time in the UK comic that he is seen as an Autobot with sentience. He also loses his Decepticon symbol in this story.
* The Decepticons win!
* The Issue #50 cover page is obviously a reference to the Godzilla films.
*Issue subtitles:
**Issue #47—none
**Issue #48—Swamp-Thing!
**Issue #49—Robot Rustlers!
**Issue #50—none
*Issue #48 features the Decepticon Who's Who.

Errors
* Windcharger, Cliffjumper and Gears are a bit naive (well, stupid) when they get captured. They see blaster fire and find an unconscious Sludge, but ponder on what's happened instead of thinking "hang on, we're next here."
* During part 3, Slag's horn pierces Jetfire in the chest through the middle of his Decepticon insignia. Yet when Soundwave finds the buckled insignia later, it is intact with no sign of damage.
* On the last page of part 3, Sideswipe is shown to be badly injured before the transmission cuts off. In part 4, he states that he went back to the ship to call for reinforcements, then states that "I'm not totally sure my distress call got through as at that moment one of them decided to chew through my shuttle's fuel tank." Therefore he should not have been injured when talking to Prime.
* Bluestreak's and Sideswipe's injuries change between panels.
Synopsis
Some of the Autobots accuse Sparkplug Witwicky of betraying them by giving the Decepticons the fuel conversion they needed. Panicked, Sparkplug and his son attempt to escape, but when Jazz blocks their path with a wall of flame, Sparkplug suffers a heart attack. He is rushed to the hospital by Ratchet and Buster.

Huffer tells Optimus Prime about a discovery he made in the Ark's memory banks: Just after the ship crashed, its barely functional computers detected the Decepticon Shockwave arriving on Earth in pursuit. With the last of its power, the Ark modified five Autobot warriors to combat him, thus creating the Dinobots. They traveled in a shuttle to the Savage Land to confront Shockwave, at which point contact was lost. Huffer has Ratchet dispatch a probe to search for the lost Dinobots.

At the hospital, Sparkplug undergoes emergency treatment and dreams of his Army service in Korea, where he was forced to repair North Korean vehicles. He further recalls sabotaging those vehicles...

With no new fuel sources forthcoming, the remaining Autobots are forced to make a desperate gamble to fight the Decepticons one last time. All the Autobots sacrifice their remaining fuel resources to Optimus Prime, Huffer, Ironhide, Bluestreak, and Mirage. These five prepare to fight the Decepticons within the volcano that the Ark has crashed into, as the Decepticons arrive to destroy the Autobots once and for all.

In the Savage Land, Huffer's probe has found something and starts to dig it out—until a giant purple hand crushes it...

Although the Decepticons begin to win the battle by virtue of their greater numbers, at the moment of apparent victory, the Decepticons all fall, writhing in internal agony. As he reveals to Buster at the hospital, Sparkplug had corrupted the fuel he provided to the Decepticons, and they are now poisoned. Optimus Prime proclaims the debt that they, and the entire world, owe to Sparkplug Witwicky.

But suddenly, a gigantic blast from above knocks out all the Autobot troops... and Shockwave stands supreme!

"NOT the end..."
Notes
*Advertised as part 4 in a four-issue limited series, but the ending and letter column, which itself debuted in this issue, both make clear that issue #5 of what was now an ongoing was forthcoming.
*The narrative box makes a quick reference to the World War I novel All Quiet on the Western Front: "Meanwhile, all's quiet on the Decepticon front..."
*According to a text box in the letter column, Transformers #5 was originally going to be drawn by the team of "Vince Giarrano, penciling superstar-in-the-making" and "Brad Joyce, inker extraordinare". This did not come to pass, and while Joyce did eventually ink issue #10, Giarrano would never work on the series.
*Jetfire's original character model (based on the Macross Valkyrie) appears in the first panel of the second page, but he is miscolored and partially obscured by Huffer's arm.
*An alternate ending was scripted and drawn for a UK reprint of issue #4 in Transformers: The Complete Works, Volume 2; in this version, Shockwave never strikes, and the series ends with Optimus Prime declaring the Decepticons defeated once and for all. Some have theorized that this ending was created by the US comics in case the series failed to progress past issue #4. However, the art on these panels, particularly a closeup of Optimus Prime's face, in the very final panel, is markedly different from Springer's so it seems much more likely that this version was simply drawn for the UK printing by one of their own artists.
*A second alternate ending was published in the Federal Comics Super Special edition. It expands the second panel of the penultimate page (or, the second panel from the link within the previous note) into a final splash page, eliminating the other panels entirely. Additionally, any page that mentioned the Shockwave subplot was dropped.
*Buzzsaw ripping Mirage a new one begins a series of battles in which Buzzsaw utterly obliterates everyone. He will continue this massacre until his death in "Dark Star".

Errors
*Cover: Megatron is colored mostly brown.
*Page 1: Brawn is colored red and blue instead of green and yellow. Several generic Autobots are seen in the second inset panel.
*Page 2:
**Panel 1: Windcharger is colored with a red chest and head and blue arms, instead of gray torso and red arms. Standing behind Huffer is a off-colour version of Jetfire's original character model (based on the Macross Valkyrie toy)
**Panel 2: Ratchet's face and chevron are colored red instead of their usual grey/white.
**Panel 4: Why does Ironhide have yellow accordion knees?
*Page 3:
**Panel 2: Mirage is colored with red arms and a white head. Jazz (seen holding back Ironhide) is colored mostly blue with red legs, instead of mostly white with black details.
**Panel 5: Jazz fires what's supposed to be his flamethrower, but is in actuality his photon rifle.
*Page 5: Ratchet has an all-red head again and red legs. (Again, the consistency of this indicates that it might be an earlier color scheme.) Optimus is barely as tall as Ratchet's ambulance mode.
*Page 9: A bunch of vaguely Reflector-like robots are suddenly hanging around in the Decepticon fortress. (Issue #1 pretty clearly indicated that the only Decepticons on Earth are the ten introduced in that issue, a point even more explicitly stated by Shockwave in the next issue.) If that's supposed to be Frenzy on one of the repair beds, he's completely off-model.
*Megatron has an off-center Decepticon sigil throughout the issue.
*Page 13: Bumblebee is colored approximately like Sideswipe.
*Wheeljack, Trailbreaker, Prowl and Jazz are all shown to be up and about in this issue, yet they are not shown among the donor Autobots in the Tubes of Transference.
*Page 14: Brawn is shown among the active Autobots, even though he was not among those recharged for the final fight. Frenzy and Rumble are shown as active despite page 9 stating they had been knocked out of action last issue. The next issue reinforces their injury status.
*Page 16: There's Brawn again! And Windcharger!
*Page 18:
**Panel 5: Sunstreaker and Sideswipe are both shown among the Autobots; there's a generic lying on the ground.
**Panel 6: Cliffjumper is among the Autobots. Seriously. Wasn't the whole "last five Autobots" like a really big plot point just a couple of pages ago? Sheesh. And Skywarp, Rumble and Soundwave are among the Decepticons attacking, despite being reported as out of action nine pages earlier.
*Page 19:
**Panel 3: Skywarp is shown again despite being off action. Either that or the Seeker is a miscoloured Thundercracker.
**Panel 6: Who're those generic guys on the ground?
*Page 20: A generic Decepticon can be seen between Megatron's legs. Frenzy and Rumble are once again present.
*Page 21: There's Sunstreaker again! Several generic Decepticons as well. Mirage magically has his left arm again, after it was bitten off by Ravage; whatever damage was done to his chest/head by Buzzsaw has likewise vanished.
*Page 22: And Windcharger, colored like Mirage. Bluestreak's left door/wing is missing.
:The Council of Autobot Elders is a ludicrously pompous ruling body from the Generation 1 continuity family.

The Council of Autobot Elders (also known as the High Council) was the ruling body of Cybertronian capital Iacon from before the Great War until several thousand years after the Ark's launch 4 million years ago.

Members of the Council hold the title of "High Councilor," though if they hold other titles (such as Emirate), they may choose to be addressed by that instead. The Council appears to be a sub-set of the larger body of Autobot Elders, and is tasked with much of the decision-making responsibility.

The Council of Autobot Elders administered the affairs of competing peaceful city-states, first under the theoretical oversight of the doddering Overlords, prior to his death, and later on their own. They ceased to be an active player in Cybertronian politics when the Decepticon Trannis defenestrated the council a few thousand years after the Ark's departure.

Members
* Traachon — General
* Xaaron — Chairman
* Tomaandi — Fool

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
noteukonly
The council was deadlocked on taking any action relating to the Tarn-Vos war. Though Iacon was accepting refugees, Emirate Xaaron wanted General Traachon to send a peace-keeping force to intervene in the conflict. Traachon refused to let Iacon forces be drawn into a foreign conflict that did not involve them, and further suggested that it was in Iacon's best interests that the militant Vos and Tarn destroy one another. State Games

As the war expanded and pressed on Iacon's borders, Emirate Xaaron pleaded with High Councilor Traachon to use his right of veto and place the Autobots under military rather than Council control. Tomaandi opposed the move, insisting that Iacon's forces remain under the direct control of the Council. In the face of Tomaandi's stubbornness, Traachon relented and gave full control of their forces to Optimus Prime, who subsequently pushed the Decepticon forces back, retaking much of the conquered territory. And There Shall Come...a Leader!

When Autobot astronomers discovered that their planet was traveling towards a potentially lethal asteroid belt, Tomaandi presided over the meeting of Autobot Elders where Optimus Prime agreed to lead the mission to clear a path through the asteroids. This meeting resulted in the construction of the Ark. The Transformers (issue) The relationship between the Council of Autobot Elders and the (much larger) body of Autobot Elders seen here is unknown.

The Autobot scientist Flame proposed reviving Megatron's plan to convert Cybertron into a mobile spacecraft. Emirate Xaaron felt the plan was too dangerous and spoke out against it strongly. Flame was cast out of the academy and denied funds to continue his research. When he succeeded in blowing himself up in Kalis, the Council traveled there to investigate his death in person. Legion of the Lost! The council's rare trip outside of Iacon seems to imply these events took place in a relative peace before Trannis rose to power.

When the Ark was lost in space, the Council of Autobot Elders, led by High Councilor Traachon, attempted to once again take command of the disorganized Autobot army. As a result, the Decepticons conquered the rest of the planet, but were unable to breach Iacon's fortified defenses. After several thousand years of this deadlock the new Decepticon leader Trannis gave up on capturing Iacon intact, and began to bombard the city. In an emergency meeting the council decided to surrender, except Xaaron, who fled. Trannis executed them for their trouble. Cybertron: The Middle Years!
