It's hard to believe that '''Side Burn''' and [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] are from the same production run. A glitch in the production run caused Side Burn to roll off the assembly line vastly different in appearance from the others, and especially different in personality from Prowl in specific. Side Burn is prone to distraction, uninterested in rules, interested in speed, and ''super'' interested in females. These traits combined get Side Burn into all sorts of trouble, and Prowl feels it falls to him to keep his friend on the straight and narrow. This task may, however, be a fool's errand.

Side Burn wields a [[plasma rifle]], and his rear-mounted thruster engine can support him in battle either as a weapon or as a jetpack. When the occasion calls for it, he can reveal the [[Sonic Buzz Saw]] in his left arm. There are probably other things he can reveal when other occasions call for it, but let's not talk about that, please.

At the dawn of the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]], Side Burn was a young Autobot who had joined the resistance movement against the growing [[Decepticon]] threat.

In order to get sympathy from some [[Red waitress Transformer|sexy]] [[Road Rage (G1)|fembots]], Side Burn posed as the survivor of the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]]' raid on the [[Cybertron Elite Guard|Elite Guard]]. It seemed to be working until [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]] showed up and called Side Burn by name. Since the real survivor's name was [[Dion]], the ladies became less interested. Reminding Side Burn that it was a felony offence to impersonate an Elite Guardsman, Prowl dragged Side Burn away to his real duties elsewhere at the [[Autobot High Council Citadel]]. Side Burn was among the Autobot warriors present when [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] accepted his appointment as [[Supreme Commander|commander]] of the new Autobot military. {{storylink|Battle Lines, Part 1}}

Side Burn was absent from Optimus Prime's mission briefing. When asked about his absence, Prowl believed he knew where he was. It turned out, he was shadowing [[Magnum]] and the Elite Guard as they searched for [[Deathsaurus (Victory)|Deathsaurus]]. {{storylink|Battle Lines, Part 2}} Side Burn interrupted their search, claiming to know where their target's newest base was located. Though Side Burn didn't really know, he was loud enough that the Decepticons homed in on them first. The Autobots were suddenly surrounded by an immense Decepticon army led by Deathsaurus' new lieutenant, [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]. Side Burn joined the Autobots in desperately fighting off their attackers, including grabbing [[Blast Off (G1)|Blast Off]]. But at a crucial moment, he was distracted by [[Lyzack|a hot femicon with a sword]]. Blast Off took advantage of this by shooting Side Burn, lecturing the Autobot on the importance of paying attention. {{storylink|Battle Lines, Part 3}}

Thankfully, Side Burn and the others were backed up by reinforcements composed of several of the Elite Guard previously thought dead. In the confusion, Side Burn was able to turn the tables on Blast Off by securing him with [[power bond]]s and sitting on him. Still, Side Burn remained distracted by Lyzack, especially when she started laying into Magnum with her sword, but his painting-her-red fantasies were cut off when [[Thunder Clash|Thunderclash]] belted her. At that point he realized he was standing right next to [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]], and blasted the Decepticon. Unfortunately for Lee, both publishers realized what a shoddy artist he was. In 1996, Pat and his brother [[Roger Lee|Roger]] decided to start their own studio within Image Comics, [[Dreamwave Productions]], with Pat acting as the company's president. With Dreamwave, Lee would continue accepting contractual work for other publishers (such as the four-issue limited series ''Wolverine/Punisher: Revelation'' for Marvel), but also started to publish his own <strike>blatantly plagiarized</strike> originally created titles such as ''[[Wikipedia:Ghost in the Shell|Darkminds]]'' and ''[[Wikipedia:Record of Lodoss War|Warlands]]''. Collaborations with various magazines and advertising campaigns helped to further advance Dreamwave's reputation. Initially, the "hook" for Dreamwave's financial success was Pat's drawing style, which many readers viewed as "manga-like" (although readers of actual manga had a different opinion on this matter).

Pat Lee's artwork has often been the target of criticism among fans. While he was initially praised by many fans for his "manga-like" drawing style (which is heavily inspired by the character designs and visual cues used by [[Studio Ox]]), others criticized his tendency for exaggerated proportions, emphasis on rounded robot body parts, making the characters look "inflated" and marshmallow-like, hands reaching out to the reader [http://www.shortpacked.com/d/20050831.html "as if you just stole his purse"], a general lack of sequential storytelling skills and the overall look of his human characters (see "[[dull surprise]]" for more on ''that''). Even his critics often admitted that his work for covers and posters was better than his actual comic book interior artwork; however, that would change soon when even his cover artwork saw a severe decline in quality starting with the [[War and Peace|second ''Generation 1'' limited series]]. During the Dreamwave days, several artists confirmed that Pat Lee had only been drawing the robot characters, leaving the backgrounds entirely to (credited) assistants such as Edwin Garcia.

In 2007, it would turn out that Lee's personal involvement in his girlfriend's beauty pageant campaign had resulted in him being unable to meet deadlines for issues of Top Cow's ''Cyberforce'' series. As a consequence, Pat had asked [[Alex Milne]] to draw those issues in his stead.
