Give him any excuse and awaa-aa-aay he goes, dashing off into the stratosphere at 500 mph—but not in a straight line. No, Powerglide is an aerial acrobat, able to perform stunts other Transformer planes would never dream of. Barrel rolls, tail stands, death spirals, screaming 3200-mph powerdives: none of these are too tough for this Autobot barnstormer, and if he has an audience, be they friendly or enemy, he is guaranteed to put on the air show of their lives.

Yet this seeming frivolity has saved his life countless times in combat. Powerglide is lightly armed with small concussion bombs and a nose-mounted thermal beam, and the former is practically useless in the air. Furthermore, his speed and power, impressive as they are, are vastly outclassed by most [[Seeker (body-type)|aerial Decepticons]]. Like the flying aces of World War I, Powerglide resorts to dogfighting maneuvers, using his flying skills to confuse and evade the enemy. This tactic works very well.

In fact, Powerglide's skill only aggravates his greatest weakness. He is good, and he knows it, and he misses no chance to show it. If this means he will seek out ever tougher foes to prove his mettle—then he'll do that, even if it kills him. Some day, it might.

Powerglide was a brash barnstormer with a penchant for spouting gung-ho sayings like "And awaaa-aaa-aay we go!". He literally appeared out of ''nowhere'' to save [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] when the boy had been thrown overboard [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s spaceship, after the latter's plan to use a clone of [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] to destroy the Autobots failed. {{storylink|A Prime Problem}}

[[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and Powerglide were sent on a reconnaissance mission to investigate some strange energy readings out at sea. Inside the temporal anomaly, they discovered a prehistoric island inhabited by dinosaurs. Powerglide had to save Bumblebee from an aggressive pterodactyl, then attempted to repair Bumblebee's damaged jetpack, before abandoning it and flying Bumblebee off the island. Later, after it was decided that the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]] should be relocated to the island, Powerglide led the large brutes and Spike to the island. Called on to find [[Grapple]] and [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]], Powerglide soon located the pair working on their [[Solar Power Tower]] with the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicon]]s. He reported back to Optimus and later took part in the battle to destroy the tower, attacking [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] and dogfighting with [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]]. {{storylink|The Master Builders}} Though he was damaged during an unsuccessful attempt to prevent the Decepticons retrieving the [[Heart of Cybertron]], Powerglide volunteered to carry [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]]'s miniaturised team and drop them off on Megatron's body. All of the Autobots were exiled from Earth after being framed by the Decepticons. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} They ended up being set on a collision course with the [[Sun]], but at the last minute, were able to return to Earth and kick Decepticon tailpipe. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2}} After a disastrous battle at an airport, Powerglide helped [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]] and Grapple reconstruct a building, only for it to be demolished by Grapple's inaccurate placing of the roof. Ironhide and Powerglide had a laugh at their friend's expense, but it soon turned out that the problem was more serious than a minor glitch — the Autobots were suffering by [[Cybertonium]] depletion. When Megatron's latest plan blocked radio transmissions all over Earth, Powerglide, Spike and [[Carly]] helped Optimus guide commercial aircraft safely to the ground. They were attacked by [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] and [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]], leaving Prime incapacitated and Powerglide in danger of crashing. Spike used a spare rocket pack to stablise Powerglide's flight, and the Autobot was able to pick up Optimus and carry him back to base. Powerglide was part of a group of Autobots taking a walk along a beach when they were attacked by Decepticons. As the battle raged on, [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]] found a pool of [[Electrum]] and, once coated with the stuff, became impervious to the Autobot weapons. While [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]] and Perceptor were captured, Powerglide and the others escaped. Powerglide was part of the retaliatory mission; however, the rest of the Decepticons had already coated themselves in Electrum, rendering anything the Autobots could do ineffective. Damaged, Powerglide washed up on the shore in time to spy the Decepticons utilising the pool of Electrum, enabling him to fly back to base and warn the Autobots. {{storylink|The Golden Lagoon}}

The Autobots set up a sting operation in [[New York City]] to apprehend car thieves, of which Powerglide was a part. He and [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]] chased Starscream into a shopping mall, but the two Autobots were unable to prevent him from getting away. {{storylink|Make Tracks}} Cosmos suggested Powerglide lead an assault on the Constructicons, who were working on an asteroid, but, to Powerglide's disappointment, Prime went to talk to Omega Supreme instead. After Megatron demanded Optimus Prime's surrender in exchange for [[Elita One]], Powerglide was among the Autobots who followed him to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. Once there, he was disbelieving of Starscream's claim that Optimus Prime had been destroyed. During their vengeful attack on the Decepticons, Powerglide met up with his old friend [[Moonracer]]. {{storylink|The Search for Alpha Trion}}

Soon after hooking up with Moonracer, he saved the fleshling female [[Astoria Carlton-Ritz]] from being kidnapped by Ramjet, Thrust and [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]]. He was assigned to escort her back to Autobot HQ, but they were again attacked by the coneheads, who injured Powerglide and snatched Astoria. After receiving some repairs from [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]], Powerglide set off for the Decepticon [[Sky Platform]] to rescue Astoria. Caught in the platform's security field, Powerglide was helped by Astoria herself, who destroyed an energy tower. Unfortunately the damage left the platform plummeting out of control, but Powerglide was able to rig it to crash into the Decepticon base.

Afterwards, it seemed as though Powerglide had developed feelings for Astoria, much to the amusement of the other Autobots. The only lasting result was a series of flashing lights under his chestplate in the form of a stylized heart. After thoroughly embarrassing himself by accidentally destroying several sets and props in an attempt to show off, Powerglide was among [[Sunstreaker (G1)|several]] [[Tracks (G1)|egotistical]] [[Warpath (G1)|Autobots]] who demanded to be given a role in a movie that [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] was starring in. Initially, his "role" amounted to crashing into a STORE while in jet mode (supposedly to stop "the crooks"). Soon afterwards, Powerglide and the other would-be-actor Autobots asked Hoist to talk to the [[Director]] to get them some "real" acting roles. After reworking the movie into ''[[Attack of the Alien Robots]]'', the [[Director]] had the Autobots given cheesy alien face masks. Powerglide remarked that the role was "the pits", and that he would rather do the stunt crashes. In a later scene, Powerglide demonstrated his rather wooden acting "skills". Powerglide was one of the Autobots who volunteered to rescue Perceptor from the Decepticons. {{storylink|Cosmic Rust (episode)|Cosmic Rust}} He took part in the defence of headquarters against another attack by the Decepticons, only to be puzzled when Megatron almost immediately called a retreat. After some investigation, it turned out Starscream had stolen some [[personality component]]s to create the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticon]]s. Powerglide set out to find the rebel Decepticons, and soon found them fighting Megatron's forces at the [[Amalgamated Water and Power Plant]] {{storylink|Starscream's Brigade}} During a massive attack on a human city by the Insecticons, Powerglide dropped Spike and Perceptor off in the battle zone, so the pair could warn the Autobot leader about strange signals coming from Cybertron. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}}

Powerglide and the rest of the Minibots tried to repel the Decepticons' [[Trypticon (G1)|new mobile assault base]]—and failed. When the colossal 'con took several direct hits and seemed to be falling apart, Powerglide cheerfully reported that they had destroyed it—then in his shock, just happened to [[To sell toys|narrate aloud]] that it had a reptilian mode too.{{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5}}

Powerglide appeared to have been destroyed during a disastrous Autobot attack on the [[Quintesson|Quintessons]] led by a resurrected, reprogrammed Optimus Prime. {{storylink|Dark Awakening}} However, he was later among the Autobots who attempted to stop [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] and [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]'s [[Spark|ghost]] from stealing [[Metroplex (G1)|Metroplex]]'s [[Sensors|eyes]], so he must have gotten better. Arriving in Tokyo, [[Japan]], Powerglide intervened on [[Ravage (G1)|Ravage]]'s attack on Bumblebee and the Autobots' human friend, [[Kenji]]. Instead of shooting the Decepticon from the air, Powerglide zoomed in close and decked Ravage with a partially transformed hand. PG then grabbed Kenji and flew off, leaving Bumblebee alone to face [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] and his cassettes. For some reason. {{storylink|Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 2}} Later, Powerglide was also present when Optimus Prime was showing Kenji around the Autobots' base in Japan.{{storylink|Fight! While surveying the desert, Powerglide came across the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]] hunting down an innocent [[Murdered puppy|puppy]]. He interfered with their mission, but took heavy firepower shielding the animal with his own body. Seriously injured, Powerglide transformed in a desperate attempt to keep the dog alive just a little longer inside his cockpit. Surprisingly, the puppy managed to hotwire his control console and keep Powerglide moving long enough for a [[Minibot]] patrol to respond to his SOS. It seemed that Megatron had incorporated powerful Decepticon technology inside the puppy as an experiment. In order to avoid being used by the Decepticons, the puppy sacrifice himself to channel massive amounts of [[Scramble Power]] into Powerglide. United as one, Powerglide and the Minibots used Scramble Power to deliver a mighty blow on [[Bruticus (G1)|Bruticus]], defeating the Combaticons. {{storylink|Fight! Powerglide was a member of [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]]'s resistance cell on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] during the reign of [[Straxus (G1)|Straxus]]. Like most of his comrades, he found more inspiration in [[Blaster (G1)|Blaster]]'s bravado than the calculated caution of Perceptor. When their untrustworthy scout, [[Scrounge (G1)|Scrounge]] went missing, Powerglide and his peers fell in line with Blaster's plan to find and rescue him, overruling Perceptor. After much searching, all but Blaster had given up on Scrounge, but Powerglide had stayed to secretly shadow Blaster, allowing the air-capable Autobot to deliver him to safety out of the [[smelting pool]] (regrettably leaving Scrounge behind). This act gave Perceptor's small group of Autobots the first good news they had heard in eons, for Scrounge had handed them evidence that [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] lived. {{storylink|The Smelting Pool!}}

Further reconnaissance by Blaster and Powerglide revealed startling news—the Decepticons were building a [[Space Bridge]]! As this would spell certain doom for both Cybertron and [[Earth]], a desperate raid on Straxus's [[Darkmount]] fortress was launched. This attack was mostly successful, as it leveled Darkmount and ended in Straxus's destruction, but he and the rest of his Autobot comrades had to retreat to Earth over the Space Bridge as it self-destructed. However, the humans, belonging to the anti-robot attack team, [[Rapid Anti-robot Assault Team|RAAT]], captured Powerglide and the others with the help of [[Circuit Breaker]]. Smokescreen joined the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]'s Autobots during their second year after reactivation on Earth. Where he was beforehand remains a mystery. He was first seen watching from the sidelines during the latest disaster caused by the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]]' "training". {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 1}} Smokescreen was chosen by [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] to join a strike force headed for [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], after some mysterious temporal disturbances were traced there. They were nearly overrun by the Decepticon invaders on the island, until [[Grimlock (G1)|Grimlock]] marshalled a cavalry of rampaging dinosaurs.{{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

On their day off, Smokescreen played a game of 2-on-2 with Prime, [[Inferno (G1)|Inferno]] and [[Tracks (G1)|Tracks]], shooting hoops and shooting the breeze. It, of course, didn't last—soon Optimus Prime summoned a strike force to deal with a Disaster: Code Blue. It should've been a Code Green: green for [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicon]]s! Grapple had been conned into building a Solar Power Tower for the Decepticons, and now [[Devastator (G1)|Devastator]] was protecting it from Autobot interference. Smokescreen stepped up in his role as a diversionary specialist, creeping up on the tower so that Devastator couldn't see him. Once he was close enough, Smokescreen taunted the giant Decepticon into throwing a size 60 kick in his direction, but darted aside at the last moment, letting the tower take the blow instead. An off-balance Devastator was then knocked into the already-damaged tower by the Autobots, bringing it all tumbling down. {{storylink|The Master Builders}}

Smokescreen was part of the Autobot team overseeing the [[Negavator]] project. When the Decepticons staged an ambush on the Negavator convoy in a canyon, Smokescreen was easily the most effective defender out of all the Autobots. As [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] swooped to purloin the unguarded Negavator during the battle, Smokescreen unleashed his magnetic cloud of smoke, completely obscuring the weapon. Megatron ended up flying face-first into the Negavator (Smokescreen - 1, Megatron - 0). The [[Seeker (body-type)|Seeker]]s also got caught in his cloud, and the magnetic vapor stuck to them even as they flew free. A few well-placed disruptor beams later, and Smokescreen rendered the jets totally helpless, unable to see or use their radars or instruments for guidance. After Megatron acquired power from the [[Heart of Cybertron]], the Autobots were being slaughtered by his constant barrage of energy beams. At Optimus Prime's request, only Smokescreen could save the day. Once again, Smokescreen managed to blind Megatron with his smoke clouds, leaving the Decepticon leader unable to aim his death rays. Smokescreen was still clipped by a stray shot, but he had valiantly bought the other Autobots enough time to regroup, and their combined laser power collapsed the hillside on top of Megatron, giving them a chance to retreat. As the Decepticons attacked a newly-minted solar power plant, Smokescreen and the Autobots arrived to thwart their efforts. Some sustained firepower kept Starscream at bay, and Smokescreen's disruptor beams blew out [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]]'s guidance systems. As the hopelessly outmatched Decepticons fled, the human onlookers flocked to the Autobots, showering them with praise and adoration. Of course, 72 hours later, the Autobots were being led into a rocket ship at gunpoint, forced into exile away from planet Earth. When the Decepticons kidnapped [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]] and [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]], Smokescreen volunteered for the rescue mission. Acting in his duty as the Autobots' devious and covert morale officer, Smokescreen showed considerable concern for the laconic [[Beachcomber (G1)|Beachcomber]]. While [[Warpath (G1)|Warpath]] shrugged him off as being "a thinker, not a fighter", Smokescreen was a bit suspicious about how Beachcomber was isolating himself from his fellow Autobots. Still, more immediate concerns took precedence: the [[electrum]]-enhanced Decepticon armada. When it became clear that the Decepticons were impervious to their assault, [[Mirage (G1)|Mirage]] went back to base for reinforcements, and Smokescreen stayed behind to cover his retreat. He unleashed his signature cloud of smoke to discourage the Decepticons, but unfortunately Megatron had learned something from previous fights with Smokescreen, and just ordered his troops to shoot up the cloud until they got 'em. Painfully for Smokescreen, it was a rousing success (Smokescreen - 1, Megatron - 1). Smokescreen was part of a group of Autobots who confronted the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]]s and their clones during their raid on Earth's food supplies. [[Shrapnel (G1)|Shrapnel]] had produced the largest army of Insecticlones yet, however, and the Autobots were quickly driven away by their sheer numbers. {{storylink|Quest for Survival}} When San Francisco was attacked by an [[Asteroid bird alien|alien creature]], Smokescreen lent his own unique ability to the Autobot defensive effort. Although his smokescreen drove the creature off the streets, it was still only a delaying action until Omega Supreme arrived to drive the alien off planet Earth. {{storylink|The Secret of Omega Supreme}}

After being transported to a planet of giant aliens, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] failed to introduce Smokescreen to the alien boy [[Aron]]. Smokescreen didn't seem to mind. {{storylink|Child's Play (episode)|Child's Play}} After fleeing the planet in a modified toy rocket ship, the group of Autobots were captured by a freelance entrepreneur named [[Bosch]]. Bosch planned to sell them into slavery and make a tidy profit in the bargain. He sealed the Autobots inside special chambers to disable their weapons, their transforming cogs, and their free will. Unfortunately for Bosch, he was low on energon and the last tube failed to operate properly, giving Smokescreen a chance to break free. The Autobot was paralyzed by a ray beam before he could disable Bosch, and so he changed tactics. Smokescreen showed Bosch how to win (well, ''cheat'') at a game of chance, thanks to his built-in override wire. Seeing the profit in Smokescreen's l33t cheating skills, Bosch arranged for them to go to the gambling world of [[Monacus]]. Once they won enough energon chips to pay off Bosch's debts, he would free Smokescreen's fellow Autobots. Problem was, Bosch was virtually spent already, and so the will-sapped Autobots needed to be used as collateral to get enough money up front to play.

On Monacus, no one seemed interested in Bosch and Smokescreen's collateral, until they were forced to deal with the sinister [[Gyconi|Lord Gyconi]], of Gyconi's Pit of Destruction in [[Sheol]]. Gyconi offered them a meager price, at 500% interest to be paid within the hour. Horrible as the deal was, they were forced to take it. At the gambling palace, Smokescreen quickly proved to be just the sort of sucker casinos love to have around. He continued playing long after they had won enough money, and lost it all on one bet when a small Jawa looking creature noticed his "cheatin' wire" and pulled it loose. Well done, Smokescreen.

While drowning their sorrows in the local speakeasy, Smokescreen and Bosch met another Autobot named [[Devcon (G1)|Devcon]]. Having left Cybertron long ago, Devcon became a bounty hunter, pursuing Decepticons throughout known space. His recent travels had brought him into the path of [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] and some Decepticons from Earth, whom he had traced to Sheol. Parting from Devcon, Smokescreen and Bosch returned to Gyconi's empty-handed. Forced to watch as Gyconi put the Autobots into pit-fighting competition with a horde of [[Animalien]]s, Smokescreen resolved to do something to help his friends. Backing up to the edge of the arena floor in car mode, Smokescreen unleashed his cloud into the pit, ending the fights for the moment. As he and Bosch tried to get away, they were intercepted by Gyconi's Decepticon allies, [[Dirge (G1)|Dirge]] and [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]]. Luckily, Devcon returned in time to lend them a hand, blowing the 'Cons out of the sky. With the bounty hunter as backup, Smokescreen and Bosch decided to force Gyconi to give back the Autobots (essentially, making them welshers as well as cheats). After the Autobots were safely recovered and reactivated, Smokescreen showed he had learned a valuable lesson about gambling by suggesting the Autobots take in some R & R...at the casino. {{storylink|The Gambler}}

Smokescreen was one of the first Autobots scrambled by the energy creature known as [[Kremzeek]]. He was sent running in circles, jumping between modes and emitting copious amounts of smoke every time he landed in car mode. {{storylink|Kremzeek!}} When [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]] and the Constructicons captured several Autobots in their "zone defense", Smokescreen joined [[Hoist (G1)|Hoist]] and [[Powerglide (G1)|Powerglide]] on a mission to get their friends out of the sinister maze. With Powerglide calling out the right route from his aerial vantage point, the two groundbound Autobots easily made their way to the center of the maze. Smokescreen's smoke blinded [[Scrapper (G1)|Scrapper]] long enough for Hoist to lasso their damaged friends and begin pulling them to safety. When Blitzwing tried to intervene, the smoke ended up sending him flying into Scrapper while the Autobots got away. {{storylink|Triple Takeover}} Smokescreen was assigned to a guardian convoy when the Autobots were given samples of a new Earth super-fuel to test out. Naturally, Megatron and the Decepticons tried to steal it, but the Autobots largely managed to outmaneuver the Decepticons from the road. When Megatron flew in close and threatened to blow them all to kingdom come by igniting the super-fuel, Smokescreen launched into his signature move. Smokescreen was amongst the Autobot participants in the [[Europa 2000]], a charity race from Paris to Istanbul. While the Autobots were ostensibly there to try and win extra money for charity, they were secretly assigned to protect the arrogant American driver [[Auggie Cahnay (G1)|Auggie Cahnay]]. Smokescreen was making good progress in the race until he was rammed off the road by [[Wildrider]] and [[Drag Strip]], then broadsided by the other Stunticons. Although hidden behind [[Hound (G1)|Hound]], Smokescreen was among the Autobots assembled to rescue Perceptor from Fox Creek Canyon. After Prime rescued a small boy named [[Kenji]], Smokescreen was put in charge of protecting the child. As Kenji buckled up inside Smokescreen's vehicle mode, the talkative Autobot immediately began yammering on about himself, telling Kenji about his function, vehicle mode and loads of other tedious crap. His speech was cut short by the sudden arrival of [[Menasor (G1)|Menasor]], however. While [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]] and [[Trailbreaker (G1)|Trailbreaker]] took Menasor's punches to the face, Kenji recommended Smokescreen, Prime and [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] drive up a nearby ramp and use the speed and height to punch Menasor in the face. When the Autobot forces on Earth were severely depleted by several battles, [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] instructed [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] to construct five additional warriors using a device called the Mind Bank. It seems that before the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] left [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]], Smokescreen and four other Autobots allowed their minds to be encoded on crystalline containment vessels, in case reinforcements were needed on the starship's mission. Left in storage for the last few million years after the crash, the crystals were miraculously still intact, and the Ark had constructed new Earthen bodies for the Autobots. Upon their revival, Smokescreen and his fellows were entrusted to [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]]'s care, to act as their guide in adapting to Earth roads and customs.

Unfortunately, Vortex noted that Smokescreen couldn't see through his own smoke either, and used it against him. Dirge appeared without explanation on [[Earth]] under [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]]'s command a year or two after the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]-borne Transformers awoke. His first notable activity was joining in a raid on [[Dinobot Island (G1)|Dinobot Island]], where he was eventually chewed on and thrown bodily by a time-lost Tyrannosaurus rex. {{storylink|Dinobot Island, Part 2}}

Dirge served as part of Megatron's personal guard when the Decepticons confronted the [[Constructicon (G1)|Constructicons]] about their dubious loyalties. {{storylink|The Master Builders}} He was also briefly involved in an aborted air strike to seize the [[Negavator]], and was present for the next raid on the Negavator's holding pen. Once [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]] rigged the Negavator to explode, however, Dirge led his fellow [[Seeker (body-type)|Seekers]] in retreat, against Megatron's direct orders. When a new solar energy facility opened up in [[Central City (G1)|Central City]], [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] led Dirge, [[Ramjet (G1)|Ramjet]] and [[Thrust (G1)|Thrust]] to steal its power. The facility proved to be a trap, however, set by [[Shawn Berger]] to elevate himself in the public eye by taking down the Decepticons with his private militia. Berger's operatives failed, but the Autobots soon arrived to engage the Decepticons as well. [[Tracks (G1)|Tracks]] took to the air and zapped Dirge with his blackout beam. Luckily for Dirge, Ramjet managed to pull off a loopity-loop and ram the flying Autobot into the ground. Megatron then "requested" the pleasure of Shawn Berger's presence, not to punish him, but to play a subtler game. He attempted to convince the industrialist that the Decepticons were good, and the Autobots evil. He had Dirge escort Berger home so that the human could think about his proposal of alliance against the "Evil Autobots". Dirge was also one of the key players in Megatron's staged videos to tarnish the Autobots' reputation. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1}} Later, after the Autobots were successfully villified in the public eye and exiled to deep space, the Seekers turned on the people of Central City, opening fire in the middle of the streets. Although Dirge and the Seekers fared well against an attack by the Air Force, the eventual return of the Autobots proved to be more than the Decepticons could handle. {{storylink|Megatron's Master Plan, Part 2}}

When the Decepticons uncovered a pool of [[electrum]], a strange element that rendered them totally invincible to harm, they thoroughly enjoyed taunting the Autobots with their superiority. Dirge, unfortunately, drew the short straw and was left to guard the pool with [[Long Haul (G1)|Long Haul]], right up until the Constructicon abandoned him to go fight the battle as well. Dirge was in the middle of...*ahem* exhorted Long Haul's virtues when [[Beachcomber (G1)|Beachcomber]] and [[Seaspray (G1)|Seaspray]] jumped him from behind, giving the Autobots a chance to use the electrum pool as well. The supply was quickly exhausted with both armies using it, however, reducing the war back to stage one. {{storylink|The Golden Lagoon}} Dirge was also part of Megatron's team working with the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]]s, producing energon cubes from the insects' feasting. They were eventually defeated by the Autobots and a grove of robotic space plants called [[Morphobot]]s. {{storylink|Quest for Survival}}

Later on, Dirge, Ramjet and [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] came to [[Monacus]] to look after Megatron's interests in [[Sheol]], and his less than reputable partner, [[Lord Gyconi]]. They were putting the squeeze on Gyconi when a program caught Dirge's optic, inviting one-and-all to see the Autobots in pit battle against Gyconi's [[animalien]]s. They decided to take in a show while on Monacus, but quickly realized what was going on when [[Smokescreen (G1)|Smokescreen]] flooded the arena with smoke to stop the games and save his friends. Dirge and Ramjet set off after the Autobot in jet mode, and very nearly destroyed him before the bounty hunting Autobot named [[Devcon (G1)|Devcon]] stepped in to blast them out of the air. There's nothing a Decepticon fears more than a fair fight, and the two Seekers skidadled as soon as they were able to get back in the sky. They retreated back to Astrotrain with their share of Gyconi's energon, and eventually fled the planet, with Devcon chasing their smoke trail. {{storylink|The Gambler}}

On another occasion, Dirge accompanied Megatron to help their ally [[Deceptitran]] against the [[Tlalakan]] rebels. After the Decepticons captured [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] (who was aiding the rebels), Dirge was eager to try out his mind probe on the little Autobot, but was interrupted by a rebel attack before he could really get into it. {{storylink|Sea Change}}

When the [[Triple Changer]]s temporarily disposed of Megatron and Starscream, Decepticon leadership became a free-for-all. Instead of chosing sides like the Constructicons, Ramjet and the Seekers were mostly content just to watch the hilarity ensue, like [[Blitzwing (G1)|Blitzwing]]'s football antics and Astrotrain's army of idiot trains. He even actually ''avoided'' death for a change and was seen successfully escaping from a train tunnel flooded by Astrotrain's [[Astroforce]]. Megatron said Dirge and the other two [[Conehead|Coneheads]] were "supposed to be the most powerful jets in the galaxy." {{storylink|The Girl Who Loved Powerglide}} But if Megatron was serious, then they certainly didn't do much to live up to that reputation. They were loyal enough troopers, participating in all the usual Decepticon mischief, but not much more than that. Dirge was once ordered to transport an unknown invention stolen from [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]]'s lab on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] to their home base, and ended up crashing in a swamp and temporarily deactivating due to its weight, prompting the other coneheads to save him. {{storylink|Hoist Goes Hollywood}} In fact, the general incompetence of Dirge and the Seekers in the air was one of the reasons Megatron chose to try fighting the Autobots on the roads with the [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]]. {{storylink|The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1}}

He and Ramjet were commissioned to find the Insecticons when [[Shrapnel (G1)|Shrapnel]] stole a vital part of the [[Space Bridge]] machinery. {{storylink|The Revenge of Bruticus}} During a Decepticon mission in the Middle East, Dirge inexplicably showed up with the Combaticons just long enough to get shot down by the Autobots. {{storylink|Aerial Assault}}

Dirge's first apparent death was during [[Unicron]]'s attack on Cybertron in 2005. All three coneheads (or Seekers who looked like them) were seen flying into Unicron's mouth and exploding. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie}} However, Dirge soon turned up again in [[Socialist Democratic Federated Republic of Carbombya|Carbombya]], hiding with Ramjet amongst [[Abdul Fakkadi (G1)|President Fakkadi]]'s air force. Fakkadi denied their presence to the Autobots, but [[Outback]] psyched the two Decepticons out by walking around the airfield with what he claimed was a "[[Decepticon detector]]." Later, after some much needed repairs, Dirge and Thrust accompanied Galvatron's lieutenants in pursuing Rodimus Prime and the Autobots through space. Once they reached the Autobot funeral barge, however, the Seekers did not enter the vessel after the Autobots. Immediately following his creation, Cyclonus served as little more than Galvatron’s personal ship and attack dog, carrying his leader to [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]]'s coronation, into the battle in Autobot City and to the [[Junkion (planet)|planet of Junk]]. He was also involved in attacking and crippling the shuttle of [[Hot Rod (G1)|Hot Rod]] and [[Kup (G1)|Kup]] over [[Quintessa]]. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie}}

By 2006, Galvatron was believed dead and the Decepticons had retreated to the barren world of [[Chaar]]. Although Cyclonus and the Sweeps' Unicronian physiology kept them in relatively good condition, the other Decepticons degenerated quickly in the absence of regular energon. Disgusted with how far the leaderless Decepticons had fallen as they eked out this miserable existence, Cyclonus resolved to locate Galvatron, daring even to enter Unicron’s deactivated, disembodied head. By replaying the planet-eater's memory banks, Cyclonus traced Galvatron to the world of [[Thrull]]. [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]]'s accelerated sight peeled back light-years of space and confirmed their fallen leader's presence. Returning to Chaar, Cyclonus asked his fellow Decepticons to give of their meager energon supplies in support of a quest to retrieve and revive Galvatron. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 1}}

The Decepticons' need for a strong leader was driven home when two Autobots invaded Chaar, and the entire Decepticon army couldn't muster up enough energon or firepower to put up a decent fight. Cyclonus and the Sweeps made their way to Thrull after that to retrieve Galvatron. Unfortunately, once extricated from a pool of the planet’s plasma-lava, Galvatron proved to have been driven insane from exposure to it and brutalized Cyclonus and the [[Sweep|Sweeps]] before being talked down and returned to his position as leader. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2}} Despite his lunacy, Galvatron was effective enough to destroy an entire space platform for Earth's defense system. Cyclonus brought him back to Chaar, only to find the Decepticons were missing, having forged an alliance with the [[Quintesson]]s in their absence. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 3}} With Galvatron's permission, the alliance continued, and the Decepticons and Quintessons launched an all-out assault on Cybertron and Earth both. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4}} The assault failed, and Cyclonus and the Decepticon were driven back to Chaar. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5}}

As 2006 settled in, Cyclonus was captured by a [[Quintesson]] scientist for study, along with [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]], [[Wreck-Gar (G1)|Wreck-Gar]] and [[Marissa Faireborn]], but when the entire group was sucked through a [[black hole]] into a [[negative universe]], they were forced to work together to escape; Cyclonus and Magnus developed a grudging respect for each other as warriors, but vowed that when they met again on the battlefield, it would be as enemies. {{storylink|The Killing Jar}}

Chasing the Autobots through space, Cyclonus and his great leader ran them down on an abandoned funeral barge floating in the void. The Decepticons pursued the Autobots into the vessel, but were taken completely by surprise by the sudden appearance of the dead Autobot leader, Optimus Prime. Galvatron was injured in battle, and Cyclonus had to provide him with support. The loyal lieutenant was willing to fight on against Prime, but when the Sweeps abandoned the barge in fear, Cyclonus was forced to choose the better part of valor and leave as well, carrying Galvatron with him. {{storylink|Dark Awakening}}

Some time later, outnumbered and fleeing from the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbots]], Cyclonus and Scourge took refuge inside a vortex, which transported them to the pacifistic, energy-rich planet of [[Paradron]], which had been settled by Cybertronian refugees. Naturally, the duo immediately conquered the planet and summoned Galvatron and the other Decepticons there; the plan was ultimately foiled by the Autobots, but at the cost of Paradron itself, which was destroyed. {{storylink|Fight or Flee}}

Cyclonus and Galvatron met up with [[Octane]] in [[Socialist Democratic Federated Republic of Carbombya|Carbombya]], where they briefly adapted the local oil into a more powerful form of energon before the Autobots chased them out of the country. {{storylink|Thief in the Night}} After Octane fled the Decepticons and started working as a free trader with the [[Junkion (species)|Junkions]] and even the Autobots, Cyclonus and the Sweeps infiltrated Cybertronian air space to deal with the traitor. They chased him into the abandoned Decepticon mausoleum below the planet's surface. Cyclonus marveled at Scourge's pathetic leadership ability when he couldn't even order ONE Sweep to enter the mausoleum ahead of them. He borrowed half a page from Galvatron's book and only ''threatened'' to kill a Sweep if they didn't get moving. Cyclonus's hunt was interrupted by the arrival of Starscream's ghost, who possessed the Decepticon saboteur for his own ends. The next thing Cyclonus knew, it was hours later and he was at the base of Galvatron's throne, having just been blasted by his leader. {{storylink|Starscream's Ghost}}

On another occasion, Cyclonus clashed with Ultra Magnus aboard the Autobot records asteroid with the fate of [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]] in the balance. {{storylink|Surprise Party}}

Sometime later, Starscream's ghost returned and possessed Scourge, causing him to fire wildly. Cyclonus tried to convince Galvatron his fellow warrior was not a traitor, but only malfunctioning. Then Scourge/Starscream shot Galvatron dead center in the chest, and chaos ensued. The Decepticons were a step behind Starscream over the next few hours as he stole one of [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]]'s (invisible) eyes, then Astrotrain, then finally Trypticon himself in a mad scavenger hunt orchestrated by Unicron. Their weapons temporarily neutralized after trying to recover Trypticon, Cyclonus and the Decepticons began limping away from Cybertron when they saw Starscream tumbling uncontrollably through space. Cyclonus rightly questioned how a ghost could tumble uncontrollably ''anywhere'', but Galvatron was just glad his [[particle cannon]] was working again, and he started taking potshots at the flying figure. {{storylink|Ghost in the Machine}}

When Astrotrain reported to Galvatron that the Junkions were shooting at anyone in their airspace, even Autobots, Cyclonus saw opportunity. Although Galvatron couldn't care less about Junkions, Cyclonus investigated further for the good of the Decepticon cause, for the Autobots would lose a valuable ally if the Junkions had indeed turned against them. His personal analysis, however, did nothing to raise Galvatron's interest, only his rage. Cyclonus followed orders and ceased bothering his leader with the details, but still chose to pursue the matter with the Sweeps. {{storylink|The Big Broadcast of 2006 (episode)|The Big Broadcast of 2006}}

Cyclonus was alerted to a mysterious Quintesson signal by [[Predaking]]. He and the Sweeps rendezvoused with Predaking at the source, only to find [[Sky Lynx (G1)|Sky Lynx]] and the Autobots competing with them in their pursuit. They managed to recover the Quintesson journal that was the source of the signal, and they learned it had key information that would be beneficial to peace talks the Autobots were overseeing. Cyclonus and the Decepticons tried to stop the Autobots from orchestrating a cease fire between the warring worlds, but failed. {{storylink|The Quintesson Journal}}

Later, Cyclonus was among the Transformers turned into an energy vampire by the [[Trans-Organic]] [[Dweller]], thrown to the beast by Galvatron to delay his own fate—though at least with Cyclonus he hesitated for a moment before fleeing, almost repentant for his action. Hours later, after the Autobots saved him from an eternal unlife as an energy vampire, Cyclonus reconnected with Galvatron. Out of all the Decepticons in history, only Cyclonus could deliver his relief at Galvatron's safety with such genuine feeling and without a trace of sarcasm. {{storylink|The Dweller in the Depths}}

When a group of Decepticons, tired of being beaten and abused by the deranged Galvatron, confronted Cyclonus and demanded that he do something about the situation, Cyclonus was so short on options that he accepted the advice of a Quintesson and tricked Galvatron into accompanying him to the therapeutic mental institution on planet [[Torkulon]]. It pained Cyclonus to see his leader so demented as each attempted therapy met with failure, but when the Torkuli attempted to cure Galvatron by removing the damaged part of his mind, thereby leaving him a vegetable, Cyclonus sprang into action, only to be restrained. Patched into the sentient network of the planet, rather than be cured, Galvatron infected the world itself with his madness and freed himself, decimating the planet, and decided to turn his attention back to fighting the Autobots, rather than dwell on Cyclonus's deception. {{storylink|Webworld}}

While in Europe, Cyclonus and the Decepticons made contact with several human terrorists and unscrupulous mercenaries. They even hired out human mechanics to work on Trypticon and oversee his repairs. Okay, fine. But when Cyclonus ran across [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike]] and [[Daniel Witwicky (G1)|Daniel Witwicky]] wandering around inside Trypticon, shouldn't he have recognized ''them?!'' Apparently, all flesh-creatures DO look alike to the Decepticons. {{storylink|The Ultimate Weapon}}

In a scheme to utilize [[anti-electron]]s against the Autobots, the Decepticons were forced to raid Unicron's head for an additional supply of the substance. Scourge and Cyclonus performed the recovery operation while Galvatron and the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]] kept their Autobot pursuers busy. They had only just returned with the flask, however, when [[Scattershot]] and the new [[Technobot (G1)|Technobots]] arrived, destroying the anti-electrons and routing the Decepticon invaders. {{storylink|Grimlock's New Brain}}

Cyclonus and Soundwave were at Galvatron's side during a heavy battle with the Autobots, along with Trypticon, the Sweeps, and an assortment of Predacons and Terrorcons. The battle was going relatively well until more than half of Galvatron's forces suddenly responded to a mysterious call that only [[Primitive]]s could hear. Enraged at Trypticon and the others for abandoning the field of battle, Galvatron took off after them with Cyclonus and Soundwave in tow. They didn't get far, however, before the energy-absorbing [[Tornedron]] struck them down in the middle of space. Only after the Primitives defeated Tornedron's creator were Cyclonus and the others restored to life. {{storylink|Call of the Primitives}}

Later still, he, along with a group of Autobots and Quintessons, was transported into a region of space cordoned off by the Quintessons, landing on the planet [[Zamojin (planet)|Zamojin]]. There, Cyclonus aided the Quintessons in acquiring [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]]'s [[universal emulator]] in order to repair their systems and return to normal space. He demonstrated a working knowledge of psychology and mob mentality when he prodded the Zamojins into trying to execute their prisoner, the Autobot [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]]. {{storylink|The Face of the Nijika}}

Cyclonus participated in a major Decepticon attack on Japan. When they were repulsed by the Autobots, he returned to Chaar with Galvatron. The rear guard, [[Stunticon (G1)|Stunticons]] [[Wildrider]] and [[Dead End (G1)|Dead End]], miraculously managed to steal the Matrix of Leadership from an unconscious Rodimus Prime. After Galvatron was unable to unleash its power himself, he tossed the bauble away as if it were nothing. Scourge seized the opportunity to take the Matrix's power for himself and attempted to take over the Decepticons. Cyclonus refused to bow to anyone but Galvatron, and so was blasted down along with his leader. They eventually recovered and traveled to Earth after Scourge and the Decepticon army. They found Scourge shortly after Hot Rod reclaimed the Matrix from him. Galvatron was...not happy. {{storylink|The Burden Hardest to Bear}}

When the [[Hate Plague]] swept the universe, Cyclonus was infected and took leadership of the afflicted Decepticons, hunting down Galvatron, tracking him and a group of Autobots into the depths of Chaar and infecting scientist [[Jessica Morgan]]. {{storylink|The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 1}} {{storylink|The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2}}

In 2007, Cyclonus participated in the massive Decepticon attack on Autobot City, which culminated in the theft of the [[Key to the Plasma Energy Chamber|key]] to the [[Plasma Energy Chamber]]. When the chamber was then opened, the energy released blasted the key and a group of Autobots across the galaxy to the planet [[Nebulos]], and Cyclonus and Scourge led a team of Decepticons in pursuit, attacking and capturing several of the Autobots. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 1}} To battle them, the remaining Autobots combined with a group of Nebulan rebels into "[[Headmaster (technology)|Headmasters]]" and bested them in combat. Having learned of this fusion of Transformer and Nebulan, the [[Hive (G1)|Hive]], the evil ruling council of Nebulos, approached the Decepticons to repeat the process, but Cyclonus argued them down to taking the heads of only the animal-mode Decepticons, and merely the weapons of the others.

Consequently, Cyclonus became a [[Targetmaster]], as his handgun was converted into an exo-suit for the Hive member [[Nightstick (Cyclonus)|Nightstick]], giving them enhanced targeting abilities and firepower. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 2}} Reclaiming the chamber key with their superior powers, the Decepticons headed back to Cybertron aboard the giant robot [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]], where Cyclonus attempted to convince the disgusted Galvatron of the benefits of being bonded to the Nebulans. The Autobots soon arrived back on Cybertron and invaded Scorponok, only to be captured by the Decepticons and almost executed by Cyclonus before being saved by [[Spike Witwicky (G1)|Spike Witwicky]] and [[Fortress Maximus (G1)|Fortress Maximus]]. The Decepticons’ plan was subsequently thwarted by Spike and the Nebulans, and they were sent spiraling off through space aboard Scorponok by a tendril of plasma energy. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 3}}

When the injured Decepticons are transformed by Unicron, two identical Cyclonus robots are simultaneously created—in the foreground, the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]] [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]], becomes one, while in the background, Decepticon jet [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] becomes another. The dialogue which accompanies this scene claims that we are seeing "Cyclonus... and his [[Cyclonus's Armada|armada]]." But, clearly, one warrior does not make an armada ([[Armada (cartoon)|at least three are required]]) – the line is, in fact, a carry over from the original script, in which Cyclonus was intended to have multiple identical duplicates, in the same way that Scourge had the Sweeps. However, the idea was apparently abandoned right after this scene—as the group boards the ''[[Revenge (G1)|Revenge]]'' moments later, the second Cyclonus has disappeared and been replaced with a third Sweep. And while the number of Sweeps would fluctuate constantly throughout the film and the rest of the series, Cyclonus was consistently depicted as a unique individual, barring some animation errors in "[[Five Faces of Darkness, Part 5]]" and "[[The Quintesson Journal]]" that depicted multiple Cyclonuses. It was, essentially, as if the armada had never existed in the first place.

After all of this to-ing and fro-ing, the question is left: if there is actually only one Cyclonus, then which robot became him? Bombshell or Skywarp?

Outside of the questionable nature of the armada's actual existence, the question mainly exists due to certain fans' dissatisfaction with the asymmetry of the fates of Skywarp and [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]]. While many fans are happy to simply follow what is shown in the film and take it that Bombshell became Cyclonus, others point their fingers at Skywarp, offering the rationalization that since Thundercracker the blue jet from 1984 became Galvatron's blue spaceship lieutenant, ''it simply should be'' that Skywarp the purple(-accented) jet from 1984 would become Galvatron's purple spaceship lieutenant (the [[cross-sell]] catalogs included with 1986 toys even replaced Thundercracker and Skywarp with Cyclonus and [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] in the Decepticon Jets section). It is not uncommon, however, for fans to then tack on to this rationalization that if Skywarp became Cyclonus, then Bombshell must have become the armada, unhelpfully overlooking the nebulous existence of the armada which caused the whole argument in the first place.

There are any number of other niggly little arguments that can be made for either party, regarding the personalities of the characters or the roles that they had prior to their reconstruction, but it's all very circular and self-defeating. Then, there are those who feel that it does not matter who became Cyclonus, holding that both candidates were dead at the time, and, ultimately, arguments on the matter seem irrelevant, as Cyclonus never displays any inklings of a past life, whatever life that might have been. This group of people probably sleep better at night.

The only extant written statement on the matter from the time of the movie's production and release comes, originally, from Cyclonus' ''[[Transformers Universe (Marvel comic)|Transformers Universe]]'' bio, which states that he is made from the "parts of dead Decepticons" (note plural), which would be echoed in his much later [[Heroes of Cybertron]] bio and his [[Universe (2008 franchise)|2008 ''Universe'']] bio. However, as noted above, the visuals in the scene as-animated certainly imply that it was one old body per new body, without mixing and matching, and favoring "Bombshell" as the answer because of the blocking of the shot.

The storyboards, however, are fairly unambiguous. They show Bombshell, pre-reformatting, and Cyclonus (with some other robots in the shot), post-reformatting. This may at least offer some insight into the [[authorial intent]]. It's worth noting that this version of the Storyboard omits any reference to Cyclonus' Armada.

For what it's worth in terms of [[Retcon|retroactive canon-making]], [[IDW Publishing|IDW]]'s 20th anniversary adaptation, ''[[Transformers: The Animated Movie]]'', presented the scene precisely as animated in the movie, with Bombshell in the foreground declared as Cyclonus through a caption box, and Skywarp in the background marked as his armada. On the other hand, the lenticular cover to the 20th Anniversary DVD edition places Skywarp and Cyclonus in the same location, and a set of character bios written by Australian fans for the 2003 Madman Entertainment DVD release of the movie—later used on several UK Metrodome DVDs—state with complete unambiguity that Skywarp become Cyclonus. Tangentially, Cyclonus and Skywarp are two separate, concurrently-existing characters in the arguably post-movie setting of the [[Universe (2003 comic)|''Wreckers'']] comics. "[[Wreckers: Finale Part II]]" addressed the issue directly, adhering to the scene as animated by specifically stating that Skywarp had once been Cyclonus's armada, and having Skywarp call Cyclonus a former "bug." Meanwhile, the 2007 Masterpiece Skywarp toy includes an 'Armada Decepticon' sticker, seemingly putting that toy in the "Bombshell was Cyclonus" pile, but Masterpiece Thundercracker comes with the same sticker, only recolored.

However, none of these things, many coming two decades after the fact, are exactly "evidence" for what happened in the film.

When Rodimus Prime infiltrated the ship, Cyclonus, Scourge and Galvatron swiftly ganged up on him. Rodimus, however, was clever enough to trick Galvatron into blasting a hole in the side of the ship, providing him with an escape. As Rodimus left, he dropped off a little "gift" for Cyclonus. Cyclonus and Scourge continued to make token appearances when the new [[Headmaster (technology)|Headmaster]] warriors arrived to dominate the Cybertronian war. Cyclonus fought alongside Galvatron on Cybertron against Optimus Prime, [[Jazz (G1)|Jazz]], and the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobot]]s. {{storylink|The Mystery of Planet Master}} Cyclonus seemed rather threatened by the arrival of Galvatron's new lieutenant, [[Sixshot]]. Cyclonus felt discouraged when Galvatron declared all his troops were bumbling incompetents, without making a special exception for Cyclonus. {{storylink|The Four-Million-Year-Old Veil of Mystery}} Later, when Sixshot attempted to extort energy from six countries using each of his six modes, Scourge and Cyclonus completely botched his scheme when they failed to realize that he was behind it and attacked him with [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]]. {{storylink|Terror! The Six Shadows}} After Galvatron vanished during Cybertron's destruction, and the unfamiliar [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] took over as Emperor of Destruction, Cyclonus and Scourge felt even less secure in their positions. When [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundblaster]] proudly sucked up to Scorponok, reporting on a new energy-absorbing satellite named [[Solar 1]] set for launch, Cyclonus vowed to steal the satellite in order to gain favor in Scorponok's eyes. Joined by Scourge and [[Predaking]], he attacked the launch pad, but was repelled by [[Raiden]] and the Headmasters. Scourge and Cyclonus were concerned that Scorponok's latest series of attacks on Earth were more likely to destroy the planet than allow the Decepticons to gather energy. Later, Cyclonus and Scourge made arrangements for Scorponok's official society debut as leader of the Decepticons. The Autobots attacked during the proceedings on Earth's [[Moon (moon)|moon]], but all combatants were interrupted by the triumphant return of Galvatron. Cyclonus was soon presented with an opportunity to test his new Targetmaster abilities when some Autobot Headmaster prisoners escaped. The fury of the battle destroyed the city of [[Koraja]], culminating in Fortress Maximus knocking down Cyclonus and the other Decepticon Targetmasters with part of a beloved fountain. In an alternate future of 2006, Cyclonus was on the Decepticon planet [[Chaar]] when [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]] arrived and gave a report to [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] about the [[Junkion (species)|Junkions]] being hypnotized by a television. Galvatron angrily declared he didn't care anything about the news. Cyclonus pleaded with him to reconsider how the information could be used against the Autobots, but Galvatron would not change his mind. On his own initiative, Cyclonus took [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] along to investigate and discovered the [[Quintesson]]s were involved.

Back on Chaar, a hypnotized Galvatron suddenly took off without telling Cyclonus where he was going, so Cyclonus and Scourge followed him to [[Junkion (planet)|Junkion]]. They were soon met there by a group of Autobots where they engaged them in battle. When the Autobots succeeded in disrupting the Quintessons' hypnosis signal the Junkions added their strength to the Autobots' which caused Galvatron to retreat so fast he nearly left Cyclonus behind. Cyclonus grew increasingly discontent with Galvatron after the Decepticon leader took to talking to [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] more than him, and began openly discussing mutiny with [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]]. He was sent out on a mission to locate a new [[Energon (fuel)|Energon]] source which had been detected on an asteroid, and found that the source was a strange [[Observer|small alien]]. Following more abuse heaped on him by Galvatron, Cyclonus was able to study the creature, and discovered that it regurgitated its food in the form of Energon. Galvatron was pleased, but while Ratbat was out searching for more of the creatures, an Autobot was detected spying on the Decepticons, and the situation soon escalated into a pitched battle. {{storylink|The Test (issue)|The Test}}

Along with [[Scorponok (G1)|Scorponok]] and [[Octane]], Cyclonus intercepted [[Cosmos (G1)|Cosmos]], as the Autobot was heading for [[Andellor]]. Though Cyclonus initially disbelieved Cosmos's story, he insisted that Cosmos lead them to his destination. It was there that Cyclonus was able to recall the history of Andellor and the existence of the [[Prism of Power]]. Cyclonus took part in the attack on [[Tau-Ursa]] which saw Galvatron acquire a component for his latest weapon. Galvatron ordered the city destroyed. Cyclonus subsequently took part in a diversionary attack led by [[Sixshot]] while Galvatron used his new weapon, the [[Nullification Cannon]], to destroy Cybertron's Energon stocks. The Autobots began searching for the planet [[Metascan Alpha]], location of a vast store of energy, and Cyclonus took the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcon]]s to find them, eventually encountering [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] on a desolate moon. The Autobots quickly retreated, preferring to concentrate on their goal, but inadvertently ended up leading the [[Destructon]]s to the moon. When [[Bombshell (G1)|Bombshell]] was reformatted by [[Unicron]] into Cyclonus, and [[Skywarp (G1)|Skywarp]] into [[Cyclonus's Armada]], Cyclonus was given a mental link to his Armada that gave him control over him. This link persisted even when Skywarp's personality resurfaced years later. When [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] failed the Decepticons and the [[Great War (G1)|Great War]] ended, Cyclonus turned his allegiance towards the gangster [[Cryotek (RID)|Cryotek]]. {{storylink|Wreckers: Finale Part II}}

Centuries later, Cyclonus was caught up in the Predacon [[Megatron (BW)|Megatron]]'s attack on all Cybertron. Despite Megatron's attempts to implant his spark within a [[Vehicon (BM)|Vehicon]] body, Cyclonus retained his own mind and managed to escape. Wishing to restore the glorious Decepticon empire, Cyclonus had already been seduced by [[Cryotek (RID)|Cryotek]]'s ambitions when he, alongside other renegade "bad guys" Skywarp and [[Rotorbolt (Universe)|Rotorbolt]], joined the [[Wrecker|Wreckers]]. In the aftermath of Megatron's [[Transformation lock virus]], the Wreckers and a few other small groups were the only Transformers left active on [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]].

Soon, the legendary entity called the [[Oracle (BM)|Oracle]] gathered these groups together and gave them each a task. The Wreckers were summoned to a far-off planet, and so the team fought their way through scores of Vehicons to secure a shuttle. Cyclonus and Skywarp's arrival helped seal the Wreckers' victory, and the group managed to leave Cybertron towards their destination. {{storylink|Departure}}

After some difficulties with [[Devcon (G1)|Devcon]], a stowaway, Cyclonus and the other Wreckers landed on [[Archa Nine]], where they learned of a mysterious energy-generating crystal named the "[[Divine Light]]". Cyclonus killed the [[Maximal]] [[Packrat]], nearly killed Rotorbolt, and stole the Divine Light, and after taunting his deceived "comrades," fled home to deliver the artifact to his true master, Cryotek. {{storylink|Betrayal}}

As Cryotek siphoned the power of [[Primus]] by using the Divine Light, his ascension to borrowed godhood was guarded by Cyclonus. At first, Cyclonus seemed to have the upper hand when he appeared to be able to command Skywarp, who had been rebuilt as [[Cyclonus's Armada|his armada]] during the Great War. Skywarp's complicity was just a ruse, however, and Cyclonus found himself doublecrossed. With the rest of the Wreckers busy, Cyclonus faced his old rival, [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus]], in a very personal battle. After trading barbs both physical and verbal, the two ended their duel in a messy, violent stalemate. This stalemate lasted until Rotorbolt arrived and ended Cyclonus, avenging his near-deadly encounter on Archa Nine. He has a fierce love of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]] and wants to see it bring about an ordered universe, bringing structure to a chaotic universe. Ironically he's absolutely ''mental'', prone to unpredictable, violent actions; he tries to submerge this behind a fiction of being an ordered intellectual, and hopes ordering the universe might order him.

Pissed off, he decided to take his anger out on the nearest Transformer and so assaulted the ''[[Ark-12]]'', helmed by [[Hound (G1)|Hound]]'s crew en route to [[Garrus-9]]. He was blown to bits, only to reform and keep on coming until [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] arrived and Cyclonus realized he was blowing his mission—too long outside of the Dead Universe can kill its inhabitants.

Arriving on [[Corata-Vaz]], he armed the Nega-Core but balked at activating Thunderwing, due to the destruction he caused Cybertron. Unfortunately Hound's crew and Magnus arrived, and [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]] goaded Cyclonus into attacking and in the process made Cyclonus realize he truly was a chaotic loony and just what Nemesis Prime wanted to erase. He was brought down, only to detach his hand, which flew off to activate Thunderwing. Using the distraction, Cyclonus escaped but Magnus sent another tracker after him. {{storylink|Spotlight: Cyclonus}}

Cyclonus made it back to the Dead Universe on time and was later patrolling the Benzuli Expanse with [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]] to look for those who would disturb the [[Expansion]]. Galvatron assured Cyclonus that he had plans and would need a lieutenant to join him. Cyclonus attacked the Autobots inside the Atalstan gem mine with Octane for support. Deciding to skip the usual pre-fight banter, Cyclonus got right to the fighting. After a fierce battle, the Autobots managed to take down Cyclonus and Octane. Defeated, Cyclonus stated that he had underestimated the Autobots' power and that he needed to retreat and rest. He bid the Autobots goodbye and transformed into his fighter craft form, retreating from the mine. Rodimus Prime expressed disappointment about how Cyclonus got away, and Optimus acknowledged that Cyclonus was a tough opponent.

Following the [[Battle of Autobot City]] in 2005, Scourge was created from the remains of [[Thundercracker (G1)|Thundercracker]] by [[Unicron]]. Scourge was designated commander of his legion of huntsmen, the [[Sweeps]], and traveled with his new leader, [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]], back to [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. Galvatron, Scourge and [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] then returned to [[Autobot City]] and sent the remaining Autobots fleeing into outer space.

After blasting their ship, the Decepticons believed the Autobots dead. Unicron sent a painful message to Galvatron, informing him he was wrong. Galvatron argued the point until Scourge reminded his leader "we belong to him". The Decepticons then tracked the Autobots to the [[Junkion (planet)|Planet of Junk]] where Scourge and the Sweeps dismembered [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and stole the [[Matrix of Leadership]]. Unicron learned of Galvatron's intended rebellion and attacked Cybertron. Scourge and Cyclonus were hunting the [[Aerialbot (G1)|Aerialbot]] called [[Air Raid (G1)|Air Raid]] for sport, but were caught in an ambush when the other Aerialbots jumped them in an asteroid field. The two Decepticons fled through a nearby vortex and crashed on the peaceful planet known as [[Paradron]]. Finding the world rich with energon resources, Scourge and Cyclonus immediately alerted Galvatron to their find and began to plunder the world of energy. {{storylink|Fight or Flee}}

When [[Octane]] took [[Trypticon (G1)|Trypticon]] to [[Socialist Democratic Federated Republic of Carbombya|Carbombya]] without permission, Scourge came with Galvatron and the other Decepticons to chastise the fueler for disobedience. Galvatron and the [[Terrorcon (G1)|Terrorcons]] occupied the Autobots while Scourge and Cyclonus went after the prize. At one point, Autobot commander [[Hot Rod (G1)|Rodimus Prime]] was separated from the Matrix of Leadership by Galvatron. Galvatron, who was haunted by the spirits within it, instructed Scourge to dispose of the Matrix. Scourge decided to use the power of the Matrix to his advantage and installed it within his chest. ''Very'' bad idea. The Matrix proved incompatible with Decepticon programming, causing Scourge to morph into a hideous freak with the power driving him mad. Scourge attempted to seize control of the Decepticons until Hot Rod took back the Matrix. He succeeded, but inserting the key into the chamber led to a plasma energy burst that very nearly killed him. He was saved by an [[Energon infuser|energon infusion]] from Cyclonus, and was subsequently sent to find the Autobots who had taken the key back while Scourge was unconscious. When [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundblaster]] proudly sucked up to Scorponok, reporting on a new energy-absorbing satellite named [[Solar 1]] set for launch, Scourge vowed to steal the satellite in order to gain favor in Scorponok's eyes. Joined by Cyclonus and [[Predaking]], he attacked the launch pad, but was repelled by [[Raiden]] and the Headmasters. Scourge and Cyclonus were concerned that Scorponok's latest series of attacks on Earth were more likely to destroy the planet than allow the Decepticons to gather energy. Later, Scourge and Cyclonus made arrangements for Scorponok's official society debut as leader of the Decepticons. The Autobots attacked during the proceedings on Earth's [[Moon (moon)|moon]], but all combatants were interrupted by the triumphant return of Galvatron. Scourge and Cyclonus gave chase, only to find themselves running into [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and [[Blurr (G1)|Blurr]], who were chasing [[Ratbat (G1)|Ratbat]] in the other direction. Millions of years ago, as [[Unicron]] entered a stage of hibernation, the first wave of his herald drone fleet was launched to scour the galaxy, looking for Cybertron. The Alpha drone designated Scourge managed to find Cybertron during the [[Great Shutdown]], an enforced shutdown of all Transformers on the planet, and managed to reactivate [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] for the purpose of observing the Decepticon from afar. {{storylink|Generation One issue 0}} However, Shockwave was soon attacked by the [[Quintesson]] [[Sharkticon (G1)|Sharkticon]] extermination units left behind on this world. Forced to intervene, Scourge easily destroyed a number of Sharkticons and drove off the rest, saving Shockwave's life. {{storylink|Cold War}} As a way a saying thank you, Shockwave shot Scourge in the back, took him prisoner, dissected him and studied the Unicronian Transformer, gaining great knowledge of Cybertron's origin and its inhabitants. {{storylink|Generation One issue 0}}

Scourge (or another drone like him) escaped to Earth and attacked [[Jetfire (G1)|Jetfire]] and [[Omega Supreme (G1)|Omega Supreme's]] shuttle just as it arrived on its mission to search for the missing [[Ark (G1)|Ark]]. Tricking the drone into pursuing an escape pod, Jetfire managed to shutdown the advanced Transformer's systems and was dragging him back to their crashed ship when they were both buried in an avalanche. {{storylink|Original Sin}}

Thousands of years later, the Autobots were drawn to the [[Alaska]]n shore, right into a trap set by the Decepticons. The Autobots fought desperately to keep the Autobot escape pod out of Megatron's hands, and during the fighting, it was inadvertently activated. Just as the Autobots gained the upper hand, Scourge ordered the combatants to stand down, informing them that the war was over, the factionalism that had divided their race had ended, and Cybertron was now unified under a new leader. Before he could speak further, Shockwave shot him in the back, declaring both Autobots and Decepticons to be war criminals. {{storylink|New World Order}}

Evidently Shockwave never bothered to recover Scourge's body, as he was retrieved by the [[Earth Defense Command]] and taken to their secret base for reverse-engineering. Though Cyclonus thought him crazy, Galvatron explained the [[Darkness (G1)|Darkness]] would not let Scourge die. Scourge recovered, and Galvatron again flung him into the slag, from which he emerged in pain but fully restored. Soon, the other warriors were transformed into clones of Scourge (though Galvatron complained they should have been made in ''his'' image). The clones, known as the [[Sweep]]s, were bonded to Scourge, who was to keep them in line. After a fight, Scourge admitted defeat and begged the Autobots to spare his life. Before his enemies could do anything, he transformed back to his hovercraft form and flew away.

While not 100% accurate, the wings in particular are now hinged in the middle to allow them to open wider, and the legs have a much more closely detailed design. But man does he have a big forehead.

* Like most of the [[The Transformers: The Movie|1986 Animated Film]] characters, Scourge has two [[character model]]s. The first one was designer [[Floro Dery]]'s original, which inspired the action figure and was used prominently in the Marvel Comics stories. The second was revised from Dery's to have more standard, "heroic" proportions and was used in the original cartoon, though not 100% consistently. Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of Dery's Scourge was the revealed head in vehicle mode. This was removed entirely for the revised version probably because it looked extremely dorky.

* When asked why Scourge and the Sweeps stick their heads out while they're in vehicle mode, Floro Dery replied: ''"The heads stick out because the idea is like a regular fighter plane. * A close examination of Scourge's character model (both final and early versions) reveal that his animation model transforms somewhat ''backwards'' from the way his toy representations do. Whereas the toys have the upward-facing torso concealed fully within the wings, the animation model actually has nearly ''all'' of the chest and body front details visible on the ''underside'' of the vehicle mode. This further implies that the robot head twists 180 degrees and folds backwards to complete formation of the vehicle mode rather than just staring at his own chest.

* It's not known how much (if any) communication there was between Marvel's US office and the UK offices where Simon Furman was churning out his behind-the-scenes stories, but regardless, Cyclonus and Scourge completely disappeared from the US book after ''[[Headmasters (comic)|Headmasters]]''—leaving Furman free to send them off to find Galvatron in "[[Wrecking Havoc]]".

* For some reason, Scourge's head-mounted cannon was implied to not be a cannon in the comics, as the loss of a handgun in "[[Target: 2006]]" apparently left Scourge completely weaponless in robot mode, making transformation a complete necessity.
