mainpic
Always vigilant, Beachcomber keeps his optics and audio receptors on full alert while on his usualy guard duty for any signs of Decepticon activity... and for any opportunity to crack a bad joke. Fellow Autobots might have to suffer the occasional lousy pun (is there any other kind?), but Decepticons get the puns AND missiles in the face. Night or day, Beachcomber is ready.
: A late-series redeco of Energon Cliffjumper, Beachcomber transforms into a large Baja-style buggy with electronic sounds and hood-mounted twin spring-loaded missile launchers, which become hand-held weapons for robot mode. He can also transform into the top half or bottom half of a larger robot, able to combine with most other Deluxe and Mega-sized Autobots.
* Beachcomber's colors were used to represent a "powered up" version of Energon Cliffjumper... even though this toy in this coloration was never sold in Japan. This is not the only time this happened.
Following up on the highly successful Armada, the Energon toyline carried over a number of characters in new forms, and added many newcomers as well.

Overview
The Energon line is dominated by the concept of combination, which pops up in numerous forms. Virtually every smaller toy came with an "Energon weapon", a clear-colored assortment of accessories, which could peg into one another to form larger weapons. The Combat and Mega Autobots can combine with one another in pairs (top and bottom, a source of endless jokes in the fandom), while the Command class combines with a vehicular accessory to form a larger "brute" mode. The line's first Mini-Cons were two teams that could combine. And three combiner teams in the spirit of the Scramble City gestalts dominated the line's later waves.

The Energon weapons formed another of the line's main concepts, as the battle for control of Energon dominated the cartoon storyline. The clear Energon weapons feature standardized 5mm pegs that all but a few figures can hold, and the weapons could be pegged together in almost infinite combinations.

A third concept was the Hyper-mode of the Decepticons, basically a series of flip- or fold-out weapons that could be deployed without the addition of Mini-Cons.

The line introduced two new ostensible factions, the Omnicons and Terrorcons, though in practice these were more subgroups of the Autobots and Decepticons, respectively. They filled the smallest price point left vacant by the Mini-Con 3-packs of Armada.

Nearly all alternate modes are futuristic vehicles or robotic animals. Robot modes are angular and mechanical-looking, continuing the G1-esque look started by Armada but refining it. Articulation rose almost to pre-Armada levels, and the complexity required by some of the combining gimmicks brought forth ingenious and complex designs, though sometimes at the expense of the overall appearance of the toy.

Initial waves of Energon included three redecos of Armada toys as new characters: Sideways as Rapid Run, Scavenger as Treadbolt, and Overload as Ultra Magnus. These toys were meant to "bulk up" the early line and did not ship long, making them -- particularly Ultra Magnus -- difficult to find at US retail.

As in the later Beast era, all new-mold figures have spark crystals to display their allegiance. As in Armada, most have at least a few Mini-Con hardpoints. Two Mini-Con teams were part of the line, with Hasbro stating that the runaway success of the Mini-Cons in Armada caught them by surprise, and that more would be forthcoming in future lines.

The line was notable for the fact stores MASSIVELY overordered initial waves of the line, leading to massive shelfwarming for the first two waves. The situation was so severe, Hasbro removed much of the older product from stores' inventory to get the Powerlinx Battles subline to shelves in time for the 2004 holiday season. Much of this early stock would reappear on store shelves in "buy one get one" bonus buys in VERY large numbers.

Homages
Energon was saturated with frequent and obvious Generation 1 references and homages, presumably intended as a celebration of the Transformers 20th anniversary year. Among them are:

* Arcee is based on the Generation 1 character of the same name.
* Beachcomber shares colors and an alternate mode with the Generation 1 character.
* Bulkhead shares an alternate mode and color scheme with Springer.
* Downshift is based on Wheeljack.
* Inferno and his remold Roadblock are conceptually based on the Generation 1 characters Inferno and Grapple, who were likewise a red firetruck remolded into an orange construction crane.
* Megatron, and especially his Galvatron redeco, is based on Galvatron.
* Omega Supreme is conceptually based on the giant Generation 1 Autobot of the same name. His transformable head Omegas robot mode is based upon that of the Action Master Omega Spreem, and the very concept of a detachable, transforming head is based on the original Headmaster concept from Generation 1,
* Prowl continues the string of blue Formula-1 race cars which are normally named Mirage. Like his Generation 1 namesake, he's also a police car. (yes, a Formula-1 police car.)
* Rodimus is heavily based on Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime.
* Scorponok is based on the Generation 1 character of the same name.
* Shockblast is heavily based on Shockwave.
* Skyblast is based on Jetfire's second animation model ("Skyfire").
* Slugslinger shares a double-cockpit jet alternate mode with his Generation 1 namesake.
* Starscream continues to resemble his Generation 1 namesake.
* Tow-Line's design draws heavily from the original toys of Ratchet and Ironhide. His colour scheme is based upon Generation 1 Skids.
* Ultra Magnus's colors are loosely based on the Generation 1 character.
* The three combiner teams are conceptually based on some of Generation 1's more famous combining teams. Specifically:
** Air Team = Aerialbots
** Destruction Team = Combaticons
** Construction Team = Constructicons
* And, of course, there's Optimus Prime.

A somewhat less convincing case can be made for Megatron = Thunderwing, but really now, who cares about anything after 1986, right?

New characters
A recurring theme in Energon is that of old characters getting new bodies, often ones with only tangential relation to their former appearance. This has led to fan speculation that Hasbro originally intended these toysm-specifically, Snowcat, Tidal Wave, and Demolishorm-to be new characters, only to have that intent overridden by Takara and/or the producers of the cartoon, who made them into new versions of old characters.

The notion is not without precedent. Roadblock was treated by the cartoon as an upgraded Infernom-yet Hasbro issued a character bio which established him as a new and separate character.

Likewise, following in the footsteps of Armada redeco Thundercracker (who was cast as a powered-up Starscream by the cartoon), the redecos Landquake and Beachcomber were treated by the cartoon as powered-up versions of characters the molds were originally created for.

Autobots
Energon Class
Omnicons
<BR>The Basic-sized Omnicons and Terrorcons come with clear Energon weapons and 'Energon Chips' or 'Energon Stars' that can be attached over their spark crystals. Chips and weapons are red and pink for Omnicons and green and yellow for Terrorcons.

*Arcee (motorcycle)
*Offshoot (communications truck)
*Energon Strongarm (jeep)
*Signal Flare (communications truck)
*Skyblast (space fighter)
*Strongarm (jeep)

Air Team
<BR>The Air Team is one of three Scramble City-style combiners, in which four Basic-sized limbs join a Combat core. The Autobots had one such combiner; the Decepticons two. Each had a unique core design and two unique limbs. Each limb was recolored once to make the necessary four. The limb figures all came with add-on weapons and Energon Chips, cast in blue clear plastic, and these weapons formed the hands or feet of the combined robot.
*Sky Shadow (attack jet)
*Storm Jet (bomber jet)

Combat Class
Combat and Mega Autobots, besides transforming from vehicle to robot, can also become the top or bottom half of a 'Powerlinx' combination robot. While it was not widely advertised, the two size classes can freely
inter-combine, with occasionally ludicrous results. The need to combine did compromise the articulation, stability, and appearance of many Autobot figures.

*Terradive (attack jet)
*Windrazor (fighter jet)
Combine to form Superion Maximus.

Continuing the marketing direction of Armada, the Energon toyline included as series of 4 mini-comics rolled out as the line progressed. Written and illustrated by Dreamwave, the mini-comics were printed back-to-back with a catalog featuring the current waves of Energon toys. None of them have any overt link to any other Energon fiction.

Somewhere on Planet Earth, Hot Shot and Strongarm find a big yellow puddle of energon lying around in the desert. Before they can radio its location in, a pack of Battle Ravage drones attack the pair. But the battle is just a diversion; while the Autobots fight, other drones have been absorbing the energon.

Scorponok arrives to harass the pair further, ordering the drones to fashion an energon weapon for him. Strongarm soaks up enough of the energon to create a weapon for Hot Shot, which he uses to bash Scorponok aside. But with the energon secured, Scorponok simply calls a retreat. Hot Shot and Strongarm take some solace that they have faced "the toughest Decepticon" and survived.

But somewhere, deep inside Unicron, from a fiery portal steps the reborn form of...Megatron!

The Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, are tasked with the mission to save Earth's energon, but their task is made difficult by the Decepticons, led by Megatron. Will either side win the battle? Only time will tell.

On a tall hill on Earth, Inferno and Prowl find a horde of energon and decide to build an energon tower on the site. Landmine, however, lags behind, complaining that he's almost getting a "spark attack" from climbing the hill. Prowl initiates a hologram, showing how the energon tower will appear on the hill. Landmine contacts Optimus Prime for permission to build the energon tower. Optimus denies the request, citing Decepticon activity in the area.

Nearby, Megatron laughs at the attempt of erecting energon towers to keep the energon from him and orders the flock of Divebombs surrounding him to attack. Landmine, alarmed by Optimus's mention of nearby Decepticon activity, warns the other two Autobots, but the warning comes too late, as the Divebombs are in plain sight. To battle all the Divebombs, Inferno and Prowl Powerlinx and Landmine transforms into Brute Mode. In the meantime, Megatron flies overhead and shoots at the Autobots. However, Powerlinx Inferno manages to shoot him out of the sky, sending him crashing to the ground. Down but not out, Megatron reveals that the battle was a distraction, allowing his Insecticons to absorb the energon. Faced with unrelenting numbers, the Autobots retreat. Gloating, Megatron tells the Autobots to tell Optimus that he will not stop until all of Earth's energon is his.
Mission clock running, 00:01. From orbit, Shockblast neutralizes the defenses of an Autobot energon refinery, allowing Slugslinger and Sharkticon to enter while Mirage patrols the exterior.
Sharkticon attempts to cut out, but Omega nails him and the orbiting Shockblast with a single shot. Though the Autobots are victorious, Tow-Line notes that they can never rest as long as the Decepticons seek control of Earth's energon. Mission clock: 05:27.
* It's very difficult to tell what Sharkticon and Slugslinger are reacting to when they see Omega Supreme. Only the inside portion of his legs are shown in the scene, and at no point are his legs visible when the rest of him is on-panel.
* Though uncredited, the story format and dialog both resemble Simon Furman's style. ("That's Slugslinger's wings clipped!" "Shockblast, it's all gone to—EEAG!") Furman was also writing the main Dreamwave Energon comic at the time.
*This minicomic was never released with any of Japan's Superlink figures, due mostly to the fact the comic focused almost entirely on toys that were not released in Japan.
The Autobots and Decepticons had been locked in an epic war until energon was discovered on Earth. Now both sides fight for control, and the Powerlinx Battles have begun!

Optimus Prime and Hot Shot are down, with Megatron, Snowcat, Mirage, Demolishor and Shockblast all standing ready to finish them. But just as all seems lost, Wing Saber arrives, combining with Prime. The pair blows away the Decepticons, then switches to flight mode as Megatron attacks from the air. Megatron is shocked that his foe can fly now, but Prime informs him that "with teamwork, you can do anything Megatron." [sic]

Prime speculates that Wing Saber will enable them to protect the area's energon.
Notes
* As Dreamwave was well on the road to total meltdown at this point, the comic is a translation of one that came with the Superlink edition of Wing Saber, in a noticeably different art style.
* It appears that all the love and care that went into the cartoon dub was likewise applied to this comic. Choice dialog selections include "Megatron is flying in fast!" and "You're flying? Optimus can't fly! What is happening?"
* Pain count:
**We're a team: 1
**You're just in time: 1
* The flip half of the booklet features a catalog of Energon toys, including the three combiner teams and the various larger-sized late-run redecos.
* The binding of at least one of these booklets has been observed to come apart despite careful storage and minimal use.
* This mini-comic was also available as a "Conventions 2004 Exclusive Mini Comic" in a larger format, paired with the Volume 3 catalog. The convention version featured a fold-out front cover with conceptual design sketches of various Energon toys. The actual comic was missing the first introductory page, however.
Though sporting a bit of paunch, he's a true veteran. Having served as a medibot millions of years ago in the Great War, he's the only one of the group to have seen real combat before. Old wounds, both physical and mental, have made him bitter, mostly in regards to heroism. A leader figure for his comrades, he's got a bit of a military drill sergeant aura to him. He also likes bashing Bumblebee on the head when 'Bee's being a smart-ass.

Ratchet suffered constant flashbacks of a mission during the war in which he was sent by Ultra Magnus to recover Autobot intelligence officer Arcee, who was carrying important security codes in her memory. Shortly after finding her, the pair were captured by the Decepticon-affiliated bounty hunter Lockdown. The hunter made a habit of collecting the powers of defeated enemies as trophies and did so with Ratchet's medical EMP device. Before he could attach it, Arcee was able to pass the device to Ratchet and begged him to use it on herself to wipe the codes and preserve their safety. In the ensuing skirmish with Lockdown, the device accidentally produced a wider blast, erasing Arcee's entire memory.

In the present, Lockdown captured Optimus Prime and intended to hand him over to the vengeful remaining Decepticons for the bounty offered against him. The Autobots attempted a rescue, with Ratchet initially absent due to haunting flashbacks over his last encounter with the bounty hunter. He was forced to intervene after Lockdown eliminated Bulkhead, Bumblebee and Prowl. Ratchet was able to free his commanding officer and retrieve his EMP device, using it to send Lockdown's ship crashing back to Earth. After reinstalling Prime's stolen gadgets, the veteran finally opened up to the younger soldier. The Thrill of the Hunt
This toy is fairly accurate to the show model, right down to the chopped-off head-crest horn and the dents in the chin. It also features a veritable arsenal of fixit tools for Ratchet to hold, so you can experience the glee of having the old coot savagely beat someone with a servo-wrench. * The Autobot medical officer was originally conceived as a female robot named Red Alert. The reason for the rather drastic change is unrevealed, though like Bumblebee, it may have been a change influenced by the expected success of the live action film.
Starscream is easily as accomplished, powerful and deserving of leadership as Megatron. At least, that's what he thinks. Power-hungry and driven by jealousy, Starscream operates through three ideals: lying, manipulation and deception. And when all else fails, a bit of sabotage never goes astray. Wise bots are careful about turning their backs on Starscream, just in case it's the day he finally decides to shove in the knife.

Though not nearly as powerful as Megatron (despite what he thinks of himself), Starcream is by no means a wimp. His null-rays can demolish large buildings, and he can fly around so fast that he can break free of Ratchet's magnetic powers.

He also has the most traitorous chin in the universe, other than Evil Ash. And he doesn't believe in luck.
:Voice actor: Tom Kenny (English)

Like others of his kind, Starscream seeks to betray Megatron and take over leadership of the Decepticons. This time, however, he's not afraid to plant bombs on his mighty leader. In the aftermath of the explosion, Starscream got so caught up in his own greatness that he didn't notice that his comrades abandoned him on a ship hurtling towards an exploding space bridge.

Over the next fifty solar cycles, Starscream searched for the All Spark on his own, using the damaged ship as a base (and probably getting a few screws loose in his central processor). He later discovered that the All Spark was on Earth and adopted a jet fighter as an alternate mode to search for it. When he revealed himself to the Autobots, he quickly thrashed each of them individually. Starscream mocked them, apparently assuming that the Autobots thought they had really defeated Megatron (whom he referred to as "the great Megatron" without sarcasm, so he seems to have at least a loathing respect for his leader's power). All too boastful of his cunning, Starscream boldly admitted that Megatron was already defeated by the bomb which Starscream himself had put on him. Despite being more powerful than the Autobots, Starscream failed to take the All Spark, partially because he spent too much time gloating. Optimus Prime grabbed Starscream in midair, and they opened the All Spark, releasing a massive wave of energy. Optimus was killed by the energy surge (he got better), but Starscream's fate was unspecified. Transform and Roll Out!

After Megatron woke up, he found a tape of Starscream's confession and watched it. His reaction was typical: "STAAAAARSCREEEEAM!" Home Is Where the Spark Is

It turns out Starscream had been hiding on Earth this whole time, until he decided to reveal himself to a badly damaged Blitzwing and Lugnut, offering them help in exchange for their loyalty. It also seems that for his skill he never mastered parallel-parking, as evidenced by the wreckage of the Nemesis on Earth's moon. Lost and Found (Animated episode)
