When Smokescreen is captured, he learns the location of the Omega Key and attempts to retrieve all the other stolen keys.

Synopsis
Smokescreen recovers consciousness to find himself on a slab in the Decepticon warship with Knock Out standing over him. Megatron demands the final relic, pointing out Soundwave's work decrypting the Iacon database has revealed an image of Smokescreen, but Smokescreen is merely confused as to what it means. Knock Out scans the Autobot, and finds the last relic is hidden inside.

The other Autobots, meanwhile, realize that the Decepticons must have decoded the last coordinates and speculate that Smokescreen holds the Omega Key inside him, largely due to being installed within him while unconscious by Alpha Trion.

Knock Out advances on the alarmed Smokescreen with a rotary saw, only to reveal he's actually going to use the phase shifter to do the operation. He reaches inside Smokescreen and soon has the Omega Key in hand. Smokescreen refuses to tell the Decepticons what the Omega Keys are, but Megatron has ways of finding out.

Starscream ruminates on the one Omega Key he possesses, while talking to his dead clone. Imagining himself in charge of a reborn Cybertron, he quickly realizes that he doesn't have the resources he would need to rule it.

Megatron listens in on Prime's briefing about the Omega Keys, thanks to a cortical psychic patch hooked up to Smokescreen. Once they've learned all they need, Knock Out unplugs the pair and Megatron orders Knock Out to use the patch to find the location of the Autobot base so they can retrieve the other Omega Keys. After Megatron leaves to put their new key in a safe place, Knock Out moves in, only for Smokescreen to grab the phase shifter attached to his wrist and uses it to free himself. The pair grapple until Smokescreen manages to pull the device from his opponent's wrist, leaving Knock Out embedded in a bulkhead. Though Knock Out points out Smokescreen has no means of escape from the ship, Smokescreen has plans of his own. Through use of the phase shifter, he's able to catch up with Megatron near the storage area, where he snatches back the Omega Key and takes the one in storage as well. The Decepticons attempt to stop him, but their firepower passes straight through him. He eventually reaches the outer hull, only to be confronted by Megatron. With no other choice, the Autobot jumps off the ship.

At the Autobot base, Ratchet picks up Smokescreen's signal, but has trouble locking on due to the fact that Smokescreen's plummeting through the air. Harried by Vehicons, Smokescreen drops towards the GroundBridge Ratchet opens, only to be knocked off-course by Megatron. He uses the phase shifter to pass through the ground. Moments later, Megatron lands and demands his subordinates search the wreckage. Smokescreen bridges back to base, where the Autobots congratulate him, but wonder where the fourth key is. They're answered moments later when they get a message from Starscream offering the key in return for the replacement of his T-Cog. Having considered it, Optimus Prime decides it's too important to not take Starscream up on his offer.

Optimus, Ratchet and Bulkhead bridge to a forested location and approach Starscream, only to find him apparently dead. It is, of course, just the dead clone, and the real Starscream uses Red Energon to nip through the GroundBridge into the Autobot base. Moving too fast to be seen, he is tempted at first to finish off the slow-moving Autobots, but goes to find the Omega Keys first. The Autobots in the field realize they've been deceived just as Starscream blows open the vault holding the keys. Though Optimus orders Arcee to close the GroundBridge, it's too slow to prevent Starscream from escaping the base. He stops to mock Optimus, Ratchet and Bulkhead, only for the Red Energon to wear off right at the worst possible moment. After firing a missile at the Autobots, he frantically opens his own GroundBridge and escapes back to the Harbinger. Though Bulkhead and Ratchet believe they can get the keys back Optimus grimly announces the fate of Cybertron is now in Starscream's hands.

Despite Knock Out's pleas, Megatron refuses to release him from the wall. Megatron and Dreadwing return to the bridge, where they find Starscream who has come with a peace offering of four Omega Keys.
Animation and technical errors
*Megatron's vehicle mode still has his fusion cannon, despite the arm it was attached to being removed. Furthermore, if one watches Megatron's transformation scene, it's blocked off by smoke, making it impossible to see what exactly happens with his fusion cannon and his different arm.
*Smokescreen's momentum suddenly disappears upon phasing through the ground. Based on where he exits, he couldn't have landed much lower than the Vehicons did. Speaking of momentum, how exactly were the Autobots planning to catch Smokescreen when he came out of the GroundBridge at terminal velocity.
*An early external shot of the Nemesis has its "eyes" and running lights illuminated in Dark Energon purple; later in the episode they are their normal red.

Continuity notes
*This episode continues from the previous one, starting not long after Smokescreen's capture and subsequent restraint.
*The cortical psychic patch is used to extract information from Smokescreen, having been used previously in "Sick Mind" and "Out of the Past".
*Starscream lists off numerous items he's acquired or stolen in previous episodes; the Omega Key from "Hard Knocks", the processed Red Energon (which he acquired in "New Recruit" and refined in "Hard Knocks"), his GroundBridge remote first seen in "Triangulation", his murdered clone from "Armada", and the T-cog he scavenged from said clone in "Triangulation".
*Ratchet recalls Starscream's lack of a T-cog, which he learned about in "Crossfire". Starscream lost his in "Operation Bumblebee, Part 2".
*While Starscream is looking for the Omega Keys in the Autobots' Vault, he comes across Airachnid in stasis, which occurred back in "Armada".
*Even though the Star Saber was destroyed in "Alpha/Omega", Optimus stills wears the hilt Ratchet made him.

Transformers references
* One of Starscream's self-proclaimed titles as the new ruler of Cybertron is "Emperor of Destruction". He also refers to himself as Cybertron's Overlord, which originated in the Marvel UK story State Games as the pre-war rulers of Cybertron.

Real-world references
*A brain pan is real. Scientists use it to study brains of corpses without the confines of a skull.

Trivia
*This episode explains why the phase shifter doesn't phase the user through everything, neatly tying up the issues of how it can be used with such versatility.
*While in Smokescreen's mind, Megatron's avatar has his own arm rather than the Prime's arm he's since attached.
*This is the third episode in a row where no humans appear, the first episode in the series where we get to hear Optimus scream in frustration, and the first episode since "Darkness Rising, Part 1" to show a Vehicon in automobile mode.
Smokescreen is an eager young Autobot recruit, all too ready to fight in the Great War. While he may talk a mile a minute and be greener than Bulkhead's paintwork, Smokescreen at least has the sense to use his wits when charging into a situation, rather than heading in firing blind. He also idolizes Optimus Prime and will do anything to impress him.

Back on Cybertron in the latter part of the war, Smokescreen was keen to be a soldier and underwent training with the Cybertron Elite Guard though it was more of a boot camp at the time. To his disappointment, he ended up on security detail at the Iacon Hall of Records guarding Alpha Trion. Though he learned much, he still yearned for combat. He thought his chance had come when the Decepticons attacked Iacon directly, but instead he was immediately knocked into stasis by a Decepticon bomb, and woke up much later on one of their transports. Giving the guard the slip, Smokescreen stole an escape pod which took him to Earth.

Upon landing, he joined members of Team Prime in fighting off some Decepticons who had converged on the pod. His wild, reckless fighting ignited the pod's spilled fuel, which sent the Deceptions packing, but did little to impress Team Prime. Though the others were suspicious, Optimus accepted him upon his recounting of tales only Alpha Trion and Optimus would have known. They took him to Outpost Omega One and the human Jack Darby gave him a tour during which he recognized some of the relics from the Hall of Records. Due to Smokescreen's inexperience, Optimus refused to let him go on a mission to recover Red Energon, and instead he and Jack went to find him a new alternate mode. When Prime's team got into trouble, Smokescreen had the idea of using the phase shifter to help and convinced Ratchet to let him try. On the battlefield, he succeeded in using it to separate Starscream from the Apex Armor, ultimately resulting a victory (more or less) for the Autobots. With that success, Optimus welcomed him to Team Prime. New Recruit

Bulkhead rebuffed Smokescreen's suggestion of using the Apex Armor while mending. When the Decepticons got hold of a Project Damocles satellite, Optimus led a team including Smokescreen to a military base in Colorado to protect the satellite's control codes. They ended up tangling with Decepticons, and Smokescreen was almost hit by the laser from the orbiting satellite. Smokescreen tried a solo attempt to get to Soundwave's location but was almost hit again before being called to join Bulkhead in fighting Cylas and they succeeded in driving the MECH commander off. Smokescreen told the Wrecker that he studied all of his unit's battles which gave Bulkhead more confidence in him. The Human Factor

After Smokescreen threatened a human driver and had his picture taken, he was assigned Jack to teach him the ropes. He managed to talk Jack into pulling pranks on several humans, and when Ratchet detected an Iacon homing beacon, Smokescreen volunteered to investigate and took Jack along too. When it turned out the relic in question was the Star Saber, Smokescreen charged in and was promptly captured by the Decepticons. After the rest of the Autobots saved the day, they gave Smokescreen a stern talking to. Legacy

When Optimus decoded the location of the first Omega Key, Smokescreen volunteered to go fetch it, and secretly took the phase shifter with him. After he and Arcee found the key, they were ambushed by Megatron, who struck Smokescreen with a wave of energy from the Dark Star Saber. Though the other Autobots thought Smokescreen dead, he had instead survived thanks to the phase shifter and found his way out of the ruins in time to help Optimus retrieve the Omega Key from Megatron. Ratchet later said Smokescreen could keep the phase shifter, though his joy was tempered by the loss of the Star Saber. Alpha/Omega

Smokescreen remained exuberant after his victory, getting on the other Autobot's nerves, and was disappointed when he was left at base while Arcee and Bumblebee went to get the next key. He got his chance when he and Bulkhead were sent to get Key number 3, but after an encounter with Dreadwing, Smokescreen was knocked out in the process of retrieving the key. He was upset at the loss, and after Arcee lectured him, went out for a drive, unaware that both sides were about to discover that he himself was the final relic. Unfortunately the Decepticons found him first, and he was captured by Soundwave. Hard Knocks

Inside Job
The Decepticons extracted the final Omega Key from him and used a cortical psychic patch to learn what he knew about the relics. He was able to regain his phase shifter from Knock Out and used it to steal the two keys the Decepticons possessed. After free-falling off the ship and saving himself with the shifter, Smokescreen bridged back to base with the two keys, but a short time later, Starscream managed to steal all three of the Autobots' keys. Inside Job
The Golden One ruled the land of Menonia in peace until the Quintessons banished the criminal Mara-Al-Utha to his world for practicing sorcery. The Golden One initially tried to help Mara-Al-Utha adjust to living on another world and to teach him good ways to use his magic. However, the Quintesson's actions and attitude made this job difficult. After several incidents of Mara-Al-Utha causing his experiments to explode, an angry Golden One declared the Quintesson should go live in a cave. However, when they arrived at the cave and the Golden One indicated Mara-Al-Utha should enter, the Quintesson instead fired a beam from of one of his tentacles, causing the Golden One to fall into the cave and a huge rock to seal off the cave's entrance. There the Golden One remained for the next 12 million years, while Mara-Al-Utha took control of Menonia as the "Red Wizard".

In 2006, Daniel Witwicky and the Dinobot Grimlock stumbled upon the room on Cybertron containing the transport device which the Quintessons had used to send Mara-Al-Utha and other Quintesson criminals to other worlds. Grimlock accidentally activated the device, transporting himself and Daniel to Menonia. Initially deceived by Mara-Al-Utha, who had disguised himself as the Golden One's favorite student, Daniel was imprisoned with the real student, whom he freed. Once they escaped, the elderly pupil led Daniel to the Golden One's prison cave. By this time, several others had tracked Grimlock and Daniel to Menonia, including his mother, Carly, the Autobot Blaster and his cassettes Ramhorn and Steeljaw. Steeljaw's tracking nose led them to Daniel, and Ramhorn's power shattered the boulder, freeing the Golden One, who regained some of his energy upon contact with sunlight.

Advised by his pupil of the Red Wizard's actions, the Golden One transformed himself into a dragon, flew to the castle, and struck the Red Wizard with mystic bolts that reduced his magic, revealing his true Quintesson form. However, the Golden One was still vulnerable, and Mara-Al-Utha was easily able to change him back to human form with magic. The Golden One told his allies he was too weak to make his counterspells heard, so Blaster converted to his radio-cassette deck mode, complete with a microphone for the Golden One to use. With his voice thus amplified, the Golden One was able to cast a spell that sent Mara-Al-Utha to yet another world. The portal from Cybertron then opened again, and the Golden One helped Daniel, Carly and the Autobots to return through it. Madman's Paradise
Humans (also known as: fleshlings, organics, meatbags, insects, squishies, noisy creatures, "puny flesh creatures", "dumb stubbies", Terrans or Homo sapiens as they prefer) are bipedal and usually tiny organic beings found on Earth and like planets. Though quite fragile, and technologically backwards, they have at times aided the Autobots and thwarted the Decepticons once the Transformers' age-old war spilled onto the humans' primitive homeworld.

They're such undependable creatures. Inferior lifeforms.

Overview
Physiology
Humans are suspiciously familiar creatures. Though they are made of soft, organic materials, they share remarkable physical similarities with Transformers as a species. Most Transformers and humans walk upright on two long legs attached to a tall body, with two limbs attached at the shoulders. At the shoulders is the head, just like a Transformer's, which sports two eyes in the center at equal distance from the olfactory sensor array, above a mouth which opens for speaking and for ingesting energy. Aside from energy, they also ingest raw materials that they use in their self repair systems. This would seem to be a sensible system, as these materials can be stored anywhere in their bodies, to be used later when and if necessary. Like Transformers, they are social creatures, who trade and barter wares and develop emotional attachments to peers. Eerily enough, they possess an emotional spectrum nearly identical to that of Transformers as well, ranging from laughter, joy, and satisfaction to depression, anger, and cruelty. It is not uncommon to find Transformers who have even developed strong spiritual bonds with individual creatures. This is disgusting.

Humans are physically composed of several specialized units or systems called organs. The major organs are internalized, but extremely frail. Damage is hard to repair, and as they have yet to develop a method of replicating these organs, replacement usually requires harvesting from compatible humans. Major systems include the brain (central processing unit, data storage), the heart (primary engine core), and the lungs (fuel tank). Over sixty percent of their makeup is water, though they are not primarily aquatic in nature. Humans run on two types of fuel: gaseous oxygen, which is absorbed from their surroundings, and liquid fuel they call blood, created from organic matter and internally refined. Blood and oxygen are required by every organ in their body and an elaborate transport system is required to transport them throughout. Though blood is in some sense self-replicating, a tremendous loss of the liquid will result in permanent deactivation. Oxygen is equally required, and if deprived of oxygen for long enough, they run the risk of suffering major processor damage or permanent deactivation.

A human's organic tissue will begin failing just one quarter into his or her lifespan, and will spend the next three quarters growing ever less efficient until the human's lifeforce can no longer sustain itself. As a result, humans are saddeningly short-lived creatures. (It is not known how they find the time to accomplish anything, though as a side effect it has made their wars mercifully short.) Interestingly, humans do not build new members of their race. To the contrary, humans are what they have deemed sexually dimorphic, categorized into sexes, wherein members of one subvariant of their species, classified as male, implants structural data, which they call "DNA", in the other, classified as female. This process grows a new human (or occasionally more than one, although this is rare) inside the female like a parasite until it emerges roughly three quarters of an Earth year later. (If it exits the female too early, the new human risks death.) The new human is very fragile and stupid; it will take years to acclimate itself to their society. Even a young human who stayed inside its female for the appropriate length of time is not capable of operating self-sufficiently without extensive training. Despite this limited intelligence and understanding (or perhaps as a result of it), younger humans are often among the first to form bonds with friendly Transformers.

Initiating the growth of a new human apparently involves much rubbing, and also kissing. Though the required interactions have been hinted at in popular media, humans are reticent to discussing the physical mechanism, and several attempts at accumulating further data were met with what they term as "awkward silence". This is quite confusing, as humans generally give the impression that they supremely enjoy it, and have refused all suggestions that they learn the technology to build their own from spare parts.

Technology
Although Earth is rich with natural resources, Human technology is surprisingly primitive. They had only begun to experiment with outer atmosphere travel at the time the Great War began on Earth, and they have limited communication methods. Although their locomotive devices, called "cars", are suitable for Transformation, they are quite crude, potentially dangerous, and incredibly energy inefficient. Despite this, the type of car is often seen as a status symbol among humans; apparently the larger the car, the more status achieved. Some humans claim that those with large cars are "compensating" for some other sort of size deficiency—unsurprising, considering how tiny humans are compared to the average Transformer.

Human military technology is equally unimpressive. They have yet to develop any form of workable energy weapons, and no shield technology either. Their primary weapons are devices called "guns", which shoot small, metallic projectiles called "bullets" using a crude explosive called "gunpowder" (now superseded by a similar compound called "Cordite"). These are more than capable of killing other humans, but they are extremely inefficient when fending off any attacking Decepticons. Their warhead weapons are slightly more efficient, though extremely primitive when compared to Autobot photon and plasma weapons.

In some universes humans have weaponry that is actually rather effective against a Transformer. In one universe, the humans used explosive projectiles called "Sabot rounds" that employ an incredibly high heat to burn through Decepticon armour and then detonate in the more vulnerable innards. A sufficient volley of these in the right places can bring down a fairly large Decepticon almost as effectively as Cybertronian cannons. The humans combine these with one advantage of their small size: hiding, taking cover in buildings or behind other obstacles then popping up to fire a few rounds before hiding and relocating before firing again.

In still other universes, humans have occasionally developed technology that is almost on par with that of Transformers. This normally takes the form of powered armour (i.e. a piloted mechanical suit that is roughly human in shape but Transformer-sized) or bipedal tanks. Humans have also been known to upgrade themselves with technology, thus becoming cyborgs.

Military
In general, human militaries are not a match for Transformer technologies. Even the smallest of countries have armed humans organised into armies, and the size of the army does not necessarily equate to strength or weakness. The wealthiest human nations often make heavy use of technological advancements as soon as they become available and so a comparatively small but wealthy nation can be far more powerful militarily compared to a nation with a larger but less well-equipped army.

As mentioned earlier, most human weapons are ineffective against Transformers. However, human technology is always advancing, and there have been occasions that human weapons are potent enough to be desirable even by Decepticon standards!

In addition, humans throughout the multiverse have often organised their most elite troops into special units. While some of these units are worse than ineffective, others are capable enough to actively stand against Transformers with some measure of success.

Society
Like on Cybertron before the war, humans make up the fabric of their local (or global) economies. Some work as repairmen, some are drillers in search of un-processed lubricants, others are retrievers of rare mineral lattices and metals, a few accomplish all of these simultaneously. The humans strangely use the majority of the lubricant they extract as a highly inefficient source of energy, and adorn themselves with the harvested minerals and metals at exorbitant prices. Apparently the humans reason that because these objects are rare, they are incredibly beautiful, and therefore worth vastly more resources than were spent extracting and refining them. Instead of trading valuable energy directly for goods and services, a small piece of lumbered and processed plantgrowth is exchanged. This plantgrowth represents energy abstractly, and its worth is assumed on good faith, though it is usually backed up by various metals and crystals of economic value.

A number of unsavory humans subvert this established system to illegally or immorally obtain these plantgrowths. Many of these humans were involved in unusual accidents which empowered the individual specimen to levels above ordinary humans, while others are tempted by their relatively high intelligence levels or capacity for selfish acts. Encounters with these subversive humans happen at an alarming rate, whether they be failed entertainers who claim to own all Transformers, mad scientists, or gifted archers who dress in homage to Earth folklore. By sheer numbers, these humans must represent half of the known population.

Politically, humans are divided among various nation-states which seem to be divided primarily among ethnic, linguistic, and religious differences. On occasion, these nation-states will engage in conflict over territory and resources, but as previously stated, their wars are usually quite short. Most humans seem to prefer some sort of democracy where they elect individuals to govern and legislate their nation-states, although a number of them choose their leaders due to genetic inheritance and familial succession; others still hold power through a Decepticon-style dictatorship, though the mental stability of a few have been questioned. At times, the Decepticons have taken advantage of Earth's factional tendencies to manipulate them to their advantage, but the Autobots have usually managed to expose the Decepticon influence before a full scale military conflict occurs.

Humans greatly enjoy sound patterns, termed "music". The Autobots Jazz and Blaster have taken a particular interest in this music, though the chosen volume has overwhelmed most other Autobots, including the mighty Optimus Prime from time to time. Humans have often shown an involuntary need to move about when music is broadcast, and even the aforementioned Autobots have also shown a desire to move about. Presumably, a fear of blowback prevented the Autobots from utilizing human music as a weapon against the Decepticons.

Humans are also athletic creatures, engaging in a variety of athletic events that are designed to test their strength, stamina, and speed. While none of them could hold their own against even the weakest Transformer, many human sports have been eagerly adopted by Transformers. The Autobot Eject is particularly fond of human athletics, and his vocabulary is littered with the human sports quotes.

Religion
Despite their lack of the multi-dimensional transwarp Spark, a great number of humans believe in an analogous concept, the intangible soul. This has been confirmed to be the equivalent of a Transformer's personality program in an odd experiment, when the human Spike Witwicky's personality was uploaded to an empty Transformer body cobbled together from spare parts. The human's consciousness was not suitable for digitization, and quickly deteriorated toward psychosis.

Many also believe in supernatural beings, either singular or plural, who have a direct but intangible stake in their lives. Once a week the more religious humans will gather together and sing songs at the ceiling, as the presumed direction of these beings is away from the gravity well of their planet. Unlike the historical Covenant of Primus, their holy books are not incorruptible encrypted public-key datatracks. Instead, they frequently re-encode the writings of multiple authors in an inefficient and apparently lossy process. Then they fight about which "translation" is correct instead of simply downloading the original encoding algorithm.

Despite having no concrete evidence these beings exist, and despite the records of the Beast Wars affirming their evolution from bipedal primates, many humans continue to assume these premises are literally true. This seems odd, as few credible sources have substantiated that their alleged creator has ever transformed out of their world into a giant humanoid and fought its eternal enemy before their eyes. The few sources available claim that their creator is quite at odds with their views on him, and is apparently totally displeased with their existence.

Many human traditions are puzzling.

Breeding grounds
The most familiar breed of humans are native to the planet Earth, though they can be found practically anywhere in the galaxy. For example, Nebulos is such a place, though some reports claim these humans are of green colour rather than various shades of beige. Femax is populated by humans of Transformer size. Pz-Zazz is also home to Transformer-sized humans, but it is not known whether they are indigenous to that world. It is possible that the tiny version of humans found on Earth is the exception, rather than the rule.

Notes
* For reasons unknown, a substantial number of human Transformers fans appear to have a very drastic, dismissive position when it comes to the inclusion of representatives of their species in Transformers fiction, some even going as far as demanding that Transformers fiction should be devoid of any flesh creatures whatsoever, unless being depicted as helpless victims/casualties of Decepticon attacks.

* Perhaps most bizarrely, humans can hear the trans-sonic signal known as the Omega Frequency, emitted by the Omega Lock and other sources of Primus's power, while Transformers cannot.

* Humans reproduce by shooting DNA into each other. I find that offensive!

* According to Scorponok, a certain percentage of human physiology is composed of cowardice. This proportion increases directly according to the size of the individual. Pretender to the Throne!

* In some universes, Transformers have come into contact with humans with strange and unusual powers. These so-called "superhumans" have been known to organise themselves into teams, sometimes specifically to battle Transformers or to protect (or even avenge) their less gifted fellows. One such individual once managed to topple the mighty Megatron himself during a fight. While it was at best a temporary victory, it was still impressive. Even more impressive, another superhuman once made Unicron himself recoil in pain, a feat even the combined might of the Autobot and Decepticon armies were unable to pull off.
