Synopsis
Following the events of The Rebirth, Galvatron and Zarak had traveled out into the universe to try to reconquer Nebulos and other worlds beyond. Optimus Prime and his Autobots chased after, leaving only a small crew behind at Autobot City to guard against future Decepticon appearances.

In the meantime, new Transformers were created in earthen Cyberfactories. These Earth natives dubbed themselves Generation 2 Transformers, and although they initially didn’t identify with either side of the Cybertronian War, they eventually began to migrate to opposing factions. There were those like Spark, who formed a task force of Generation 2 Autobots dedicated to protecting life, and those like Clench, who formed an outlaw Decepticon Syndicate with other like-minded Transformers and remaining Decepticons such as Breakdown and the Firecons.

Some time in 2010, Clench and his Decepticons attack the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. Spark and his Autobots confront them, but are overwhelmed, thanks to Clench's forces being bolstered with a new version of Sharkticons sent by the Quintessons as part of an alliance. The Autobots have to retreat, and Spark is taken prisoner along with the human workers.

Streetwise, from Autobot City, meets up with the Generation 2 Autobots to assess the current situation and formulate a battle plan. At the Hadron Collider, Clench is working with the Sharkticon general Sky-Byte to make the chemical forestonite usable. Sky-Byte determines that in its natural state, forestonite is just a sub-grade fuel, but when bombarded with high energy particles, it can alter Transformers, giving them heightened abilities. After an initial test with Cindersaur yields some unexpected results, Sky-Byte is able to refine his formula successfully.

Outside, Double Punch is confusing everyone with his accent as he tries to express his “disinterest” with binary bonding when the Autobots attack. While Scorch leads the initial assault with more Autobots on the way, Clench rushes out to repel the attack with some of his newly forestonite-powered Decepticons.

Meanwhile, Streetwise, Rapido, and Meanstreak sneak in through a back door, trying to find Spark and the hostages. Fighting through Sharkticons, they locate the chamber with the forestonite and their captive leader. They are also met by Sky-Byte, Breakdown, and Dirtbag, who have also been improved by the effects of the forestonite. With their new powers, the Decepticons are able to hold back the Autobots for a while, until Rapido is able to break Spark free of his restraints. In an attempt to keep the forestonite from their enemies, Breakdown shoots the supply. It doesn’t explode as he anticipated, but instead spreads out in gaseous form over everyone and mutates the Autobots with their own powers.

Outside, more Autobots are joining the attack: a battalion of Go-Bots and a group of Generation 1 Autobots from Autobot City. Eventually, the battle inside and the battle outside smash down the walls of the facility, and the forestonite gas escapes, affecting the rest of the Transformers. Realizing they’ve lost their advantage, Sky-Byte flees with his Sharkticons, with Clench and his men following.

As the Autobots clean up the remains of the battle, Streetwise elects to remain among Spark's forces rather than return to Autobot City. Spark postulates that these changes have truly created a second generation of Transformers as he hands five Generation 2 Autobot symbols to Streetwise for the Protectobots. He also informs Streetwise that there are still some unaccounted-for canisters of forestonite that have to be tracked down in future adventures.

Errors
* In the flashback, Zarak should be drawn like American "The Rebirth" Zarak, not Japanese Headmasters Scorponok.
* Streetwise is consistently drawn with Rapido's helmet.

Items of note
*While previous narratives have placed Generation 2 as simply a continuation of Generation 1 fiction, this story illustrates an actual difference in Generation 2 characters. It initially gives the title to Transformers created on Earth after "The Rebirth", and ultimately categorizes Generation 2 as all Transformers who have been augmented with the forestonite.

*Additionally, this story attempts to explain the perceived gaudy color schemes of many of the Transformers as a mutation caused by exposure to the forestonite.

* In addition to color contamination, forestonite also grants everyone special powers.
**Firecons: stronger energy blasts
**Clench: can create localized gravity wells.
**Breakdown: Concussive sonic blasts
**Sky-Byte: "Tsunami Blaster" chest-beam attack
**Rapido: superspeed
**Pyro: premonition of imminent future
**Bumblebee: floats like a butterfly
**Sideswipe: uh, spiky wheels?
**Beachcomber: plant life blossoms where he stands

*Both Streetwise and Breakdown are depicted as the last functioning members of their groups, a reference to the fact that the Protectobots and Stunticons missed out on being issued during Generation 2’s initial run (other than Breakdown, who was released via 1994).

*While this is meant as a Generation 2 origin story, some of the starring characters weren’t, in fact, officially Generation 2 during the original toyline’s run. For example, Double Punch and Slicer were Action Masters, and Sky-Byte is based on a character from Robots in Disguise, while some feel that Clench and Spark originally being European Generation 1 toys that were absorbed and reissued as Generation 2 figures disqualifies them as true Generation 2 characters.

*Despite being on the cover, Ultra Magnus doesn’t appear in the comic at all.

Real-world references
* Most of the action takes place within and about the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland. It's real! And it didn't end the universe.
* Streetwise's personality seems to be based on Shaft. For some reason.
* Clench is based on character actor Jack Palance. His claim to have "core-dumped bigger than you" is a reference to a line from Palance's film "City Slickers". His quip "Believe it... or not!" refers to "Ripley's Believe It or Not!", a television show which Palance hosted.
* Pyro is based on David Tennant's iteration of Dr. Who.

Transformers references
* The opening series of flashbacks (which are framed by Cybernet Space Cube-style graphics) references the end of the American cartoon, specifically Galvatron, Scourge, and Zarak's retreat. Also, Optimus Prime's mohawk is entirely silver, a nod to the miscoloring present in the final episodes.
* Rapido says that "in an emergency, I outrank everybody," a nod to Rapido's original rank of 10. (Optimus Prime's rank was only 9 that year!)
* Streetwise tries the Universal Greeting on the upgraded Sharkticons. Whoops, it doesn't work anymore!
* Sky-Byte occasionally speaks in haiku. Exposure to forestonite also grants him his Robots in Disguise special attack, the "Tsunami Blaster."
* When the Aquaspeeders and Color Changers battle, Aquafend mentions the two Decepticons were on Cybertron until recently, as they appeared there in "The Coming Storm: Part 1." Also, Jetstorm calls Aquafend his "brother," a nod towards them being redecoes of each other.

Covers
* BotCon Edition: Spark and the other G2 Redux Autobots pushing "City Commander" Ultra Magnus out of the way to rush to a situation, and closeups of Breakdown and Clench; art by Nick Roche and colors by Thomas Deer.
Each universal stream's name consists of three parts, beginning with a noun which refers to the continuity family of origin, a number that indicates the "real world" date of creation, and a Greek letter that denotes the form of media. For example, "Primax 984.0 Gamma" refers to the Generation 1 Marvel Comics continuity, with "Primax" referring to the Generation 1 continuity family, "984.0" indicating a publication date of September 1984 (with "0" indicating an unknown day of publication), and "Gamma" denoting a comic book series.

List of known continuity family indicators:

* Aurex—the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.
* Gargent—the Tonka GoBots continuity family.
* Malgus—the Animated continuity family.
* Nexus—the cluster where the TransTech world of Axiom Nexus resides.
* Primax—the Generation 1 continuity family.
* Quadwal—the "real world".
* Tyran—the live-action movie continuity family.
* Viron—the Robots in Disguise continuity family.
* Yayayarst—the Go-Go-Go-Bots continuity family.
* Xobitor—the, uh, Robotix continuity family.

Supplied by writers Greg Sepelak and Trent Troop, a list of Greek letters and the media to which they refer:

* Alpha—animated series
* Beta—tech spec/toy/pack-in comic only ("box")
* Gamma—comic book series
* Delta—motion picture/live action
* Epsilon—club/convention fiction
* Zeta—text stories, storybooks and other prose works (printed)
* Eta—radio/audiocentric universes, books on tape
* Theta—live performance/spoken word
* Iota—Internet-only information (not involved with club/convention)
* Kappa—games (video and otherwise)

Using this information, we could, in theory, determine the names of yet-unnamed universes on our own. For example, the Unicron Trilogy cartoon continuity would be Aurex 802.23 Alpha. <!-- This was later confirmed, so we need to come up with a new example! -->

Officially-designated universal streams
Misassembly is what happens when something goes wrong in the production process and parts of a toy are assembled in a way other than their design intended. It can happen for a variety of reasons, but the result is that many or even all units of a given production run on a toy will contain some form of incorrect assembly.

The most common form of misassembly is the swapping of two similar parts from left to right, such as feet, forearms, door kibble etc., and/or having parts attached backwards.

Misassembled toys will often appear normal at first glance, having made it through the manufacture and packaging process either without anyone noticing or, if they did, without thinking it was a significant enough problem to warrant the trouble of making a mid-run correction. Mistaken assemblies can create problems with posability or transformation, such as toys which can essentially transform but have parts that are difficult or impossible to click fully into place.

Examples
Swapped parts
* Universe Blackarachnia's forearms
* Universe Repugnus's beast mode foreclaws (the same error is repeated on the 2005 reuses of the mold.)
* Animated Blitzwing's upper arms
* Cybertron Ransack's rear wheels (the same error is repeated on every subsequent reuse of the mold except for 2006's Rattrap.)
* Energon Stom Jet has his inside legs swapped so that the knee joint faces the wrong way (the same error is repeated on every subsequent reuse of the mold).
* Human Alliance Bumblebee (Movie)'s legs were supposedly swapped because the extra transformation step (rotating the legs and waist) would have been too difficult for kids to do. Although prototype photos seen via TakaraTomy show the legs with the wheels in a more movie-accurate setup, the official Hasbro stock photos and the instructions show the "missassembly" as the "correct" assembly.
Solutions
Many cases of misassembly can easily be fixed with the aid of a screwdriver and a modicum of judiciously applied pressure. Most Transformers include many parts that are held together with Phillips-head screws, which can generally be removed quite easily, allowing the misassembled pieces to be reversed, swapped out or otherwise re-aligned. Also, many toys from Beast Wars onwards feature ball joints or similar that can usually be popped free and easily reconfigured. Examples include Animated Blitzwing, whose left-right swapped upper arms can be easily popped out of his shoulders and unscrewed from his forearms and then reassembled.

However, sometimes the assembly process involves adhesives or metal rods, which makes certain parts virtually impossible to separate without serious risk of damaging the toy permanently. Also, toys involving electronic gimmicks can be particularly tricky to tinker with. All but those confident in their kitbashing skills should be wary of attempting such fixes.

Arguably, such fixes mean the toy is no longer in its "original" state, so extreme semanticists might argue that this counts as a form of customizing. But really, do we care?

Unusual cases
In some cases, there is an evident problem where something doesn't quite work properly, but the stock photography and even elements of the deco would suggest that everything is in order. Although it is difficult to prove without official confirmation, cases like this may be due to a misassembly happening quite early in the design process, after the prototype phase but before finalising the deco, and thereafter being assumed to be correct at each subsequent stage of production.

An example of this is the Titanium Series series Ultra Magnus, whose shoulder-mounted rocket launchers appear to have been been flipped horizontally, as their pegs cause them to attach top-down in robot mode. Although it is possible that some kind of mirror-flip occurred in the moulding of the launchers, an arguably more likely explanation notes that if the shoulders are simply swapped out they can attach correctly, suggesting instead a case of <strong class="selflink">misassembly</strong>. However, the fact that the shoulders feature Autobot-sigil tampographs that would then be rendered visible only from the back would seem to argue against this, as does the packaging photography of the prototype. Conversely, the instructions depict the "correct" shoulder assembly as distinguished by showing frontwards the moulding detail that is backwards-facing on the toy as released.

Such a case could be an example of misassembly occurring very early in the process. The decision to "correct" the toy by swapping out the parts may make the accessories attach correctly, but at the cost of hiding some of the deco.

Misassembly is not...
* Misassembly is not the same thing as toys which are incorrectly transformed in their packaging and/or promotion photography, such as "Ultimate" Movie Bumblebee and his non-collapsed chest.

* Misassembly is not the same thing as a design change, where the way parts were clearly intended to move, align or otherwise function has been altered in a manner which partly or fully compromises its optimal function, such as Lockdown's wrists, Animated Bumblebee's stingers, or Movie Ratchet's thumbs. These changes can sometimes appear to be oversights or mistakes, but are in fact often done for safety reasons. Occasionally these issues are corrected in later re-uses of the mould, such as with Animated Bumblebee.

* Misassembly is not the same thing as a manufacturing error, where a toy has been produced with parts that do not function as they were clearly intended, but are not the result of a deliberate design change. Manufacturing errors can result from pieces being manufactured fractionally too small or large, or subtly not quite the right shape, resulting in parts that don't move as intended, such as Universe Ironhide. Sometimes large numbers of units from a production run will have these problems while others from the same run will not, such as with Animated Grimlock's partially-retracting leg/forearms.
