Crankcase
:Crankcase is a whiny Decepticon Triggercon skidplate from the dumb Generation 1 continuity family.

Nobody likes Crankcase, and he hates everybody and everything. Once a geeky collection of circuits and servos, Crankcase began life as a menial janitor in the Fuel-Spill Section of the Ministry of Energy and Nutrition on Cybertron. The bullies of his youth put a huge chip on his shoulder, where he now carries a set of heavy guns. He'd rather use them on those too weak to retaliate, and then laugh in their faces while their energon runs out. This makes him momentarily happy; then he goes back to an endless series of griping complaints about every facet of his miserable existence. A complete jerk and slag-piece, he fits fairly well into the Decepticon military, but adds very little to it. The Autobots certainly wouldn't want him. They already have Gears and Huffer.

Fiction
Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
noteukonly

Crankcase was under the command of that vapor-brained Megatron millions of years ago on Cybertron, but they couldn't even beat up a bunch of pipecleaner pacifists right, and completely lost the source of all knowledge and information, the Underbase. The Flames of Boltax! Things only got worse after that. Oh sure, we don't know anything that actually happened to Crankcase for over four million years, but they definitely must've gotten worse. In the present day, he had a useless job serving the equally useless Decepticon Triumverate. What a bunch of bloated losers. Not that Megatron II coming along and blowing them away made things any better... none of the Decepticon leaders could ever accomplish anything lasting, so who Crankcase was serving didn't matter. The Fall and Rise of the Decepticon Empire.

Megatron II promised battles, but instead sent Crankcase off to find other warriors for the cause... Great, now he was a glorified recruiting agent. Soon, Megatron was replaced by another Megatron, but then the now one blew himself up too, and Crankcase had to go to that miserable mudball Earth, to retrieve one of the contestants for the Con leadership. Of course, as he suspected it'd happen, the guy didn't take it kindly to be retrieved, and instead beat Crankcase and his compatriots up, commandeered their ship, and had the bright idea to attack the Ark. Rage! You didn't have to be a pessimist to know how that one would work out... Still, battered and damaged, they retrieved Thunderwing and convinced him to retreat and fight another day. Wouldn't you know, the Decepticon Council of Elders thought this was stellar performance, and nominated him as the new Con leader. Just goes to show, you have to be a loony to be in charge. Assault on the Ark! Then his Triggercon "friends" abandoned him to go running off with some Mayhem Attack Squad. Slag-suckers—like joining a group with an even stupider name than the Wreckers is going to be some sort of edge in combat. Odds were their commander would end up going mad with power and beat the circuits out of them, anyway. Matrix Quest

Later, some pathetic "God" possessed an even more pathetic Autobot and gathered Crankcase with a bunch of other Transformers to battle Unicron. Right—a swarm of mecha-ants attacking a guy the size of a planet. That was really going to work. Anyway, some Autobot made a really long and self-important speech, picked up some nick-knack he found lying around and yada yada yada, someone was probably expecting Crankcase to clean up the mess. Not a chance. On the Edge of Extinction!

Some new guy named Bludgeon took over the Decepticons after that and used the scientific method to pick a new world to plunder. The weak little inhabitants of Klo put up no fight whatsoever, which was really pathetic. Then the Autobots showed up and got massacred, which was even more pathetic. THEN the Autobots all started coming back to life and doing annoying things like caving in Crankcase's entire skull. He knew it would come to this, he just knew it. End of the Road! (US)

Marvel UK future timelines
In 2009, Galvatron brought Crankcase and the Triggercons along with him to destroy an Autobot resistance movement, but he did all the work himself and then told them to stay out of his fight with Rodimus Prime. What was the point of bringing Crankcase along anyway, then? Aspects of Evil!

Another Time & Place
So once Bludgeon realized he was a lousy leader, his brilliant solution was to revive a leader that was even worse: Megatron. Crankcase (having his head un-smooshed by some idiot) got dragged along to Hydrus Four, where Bludgeon had the lame idea of using Nucleon to revitalize their old commander. "Great, another leader who talks with his fists," thought Crankcase. Crankcase was so sure everything would go wrong, he wasn't even impressed when the Decepticons captured the Dinobots with the Holocaust Trigger and didn't even have to raise a weapon. Big whoop. Oh sure, Crankcase took his turn torturing their captives like all the other Decepticons, but he just knew the Dinobots would get free and ruin everything, he just knew it. So it was no surprise to Crankcase when he came across the Micromaster named Roadhandler about to free Grimlock. The Dinobot commander charged Crankcase and hit him with enough force to embed the Triggercon in the far wall. Another Time & Place

Generation 2
Some idiot un-smooshed Crankcase's head, so he remained an active member of Bludgeon's army. That was stupid. It was only a matter of time before he would get injured again, like from Generation 2 Cybertronian acid rain, so what was the point of repairing him? No one ever listens to Crankcase, though, so he went ahead and died when the Cybertronians caved in his chassis. New Dawn

It figures that Megatron was in charge again by this time. Crankcase had no luck under Megatron before, what chance did either have now? The Power and the Glory You didn't think they'd win a battle against Jhiaxus, now did you.

Classics
noteclassics
Crankcase's complaining must've pissed off someone important, because he was assigned waste disposal duty on Bludgeon's team. Great — like he didn't have enough to grumble about already. What's worse, he was commanded to dispose of Abominus, who Bludgeon had branded a traitor. The only thing worse than hauling garbage is hauling garbage that might suddenly wake up and eat you. At Fight's End

Regeneration One
noterg1

Crankcase signed up to Soundwave's "Neo-Decepticon" insurgency at Fort Scyk. Like that would ever end well. Counterpoint

IDW comics continuity
Crankcase was stuck on Nebulos with a bunch of other incompetent Decepticon redshirts that quickly got their skidplates handed to them by that Pretender Thunderwing. Yeah, like nobody expected that to happen. Stormbringer issue 3

He survived Thunderwing's attack, and after the end of the war, found himself on the planet Clemency with a handful of other Decepticon Scavengers and a head wound. While there, they were contacted by the Decepticon Justice Division, looking to torture and kill one of them for crimes against the Decepticons. Confused since there were only six of them and the Division mentioned seven, they discovered a stasis-locked Grimlock. Rules of Disengagement

TransTech
In the TransTech city of Axiom Nexus, Ruckus, Needlenose and Crankcase assaulted what they thought was an energon refinery, but it turned out to be a waste fuel storage depot. Eyuw. Around Cybertron#Around Cybertron #1

: Crankcase transforms into a four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle of indeterminate model. Similar to the other Triggercons, he has flip-out weaponry, which in his case are two double-barreled laser cannons which deploy from his robot-mode backpack/shoulders using a gear mechanism. In vehicle mode, they flip out from his camper and through his windshield. The windshield HE JUST HAD WASHED, thank you very much. Some people...
: None of the Triggercons (or Triggerbots) were released in Takara's Transformers lines. Figures that he gets forgotten as usual...
The fusion cannon is Megatron's ultimate weapon. It is attached to his right arm and is devastatingly powerful, as demonstrated by its sudden removal of Ironhide's head. (It's at least as powerful as Fortress Maximus's hands in comparison.) It strikes fear into the sparks of both the Autobots and the Decepticons, though this description and its actual destructive capacity seems strangely uneven.
Generation 1
Marvel Comics continuity
noteukonly

While on a hunt for Optimus Prime, the Predacons betrayed Megatron. Divebomb stole Megatron's fusion cannon and the Predacons left Megatron to fight Optimus Prime with only his small backup gun. Megatron opened a space bridge which pulled both him and Prime to Cybertron where Megatron got a new fusion cannon. ...The Harder They Die! It is unknown what Divebomb did with the original.

Generation 2
As part of an agreement with Cobra, Megatron's body was rebuilt to resemble an Earth-design tank with his fusion cannon replaced by a rail gun.

The Transformers cartoon
Megatron could remove his cannon from his main body. One time, Brawn stole it from him and used it against him. Megatron was not amused. Fire on the Mountain

Fusion cannons are also oddly useful when you just wanna kick your lieutenant for shooting you in the back but don't want to have to walk over to him... yeah, we don't question that. More than Meets the Eye, Part 3 Starscream's Brigade

An attempted coup from Devastator is another matter. The shots continuously bounced off his armor and Megatron had to resort to a 5-way fistfight with Starscream, Astrotrain, and Blitzwing as an alternative. Triple Takeover

G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers
Having defeated Megatron, Optimus Prime ripped the fusion cannon of his arm and used it to destroy the SPS Satellite. It supposedly was the only thing the G.I. Joe, Cobra, Autobot and Decepticon troops gathered at Cobra Island had that could reach something in space. Thereafter, the fusion cannon was brought to Area 52. G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers issue 6

IDW comics continuity
The fusion cannon was a gift from Starscream. Megatron Origin issue 4 It's ironic how Megatron decided to pay him back a few hundred thousand years later by blowing a huge hole in his torso. Infiltration issue 6

As leader of the Decepticon Justice Division, Tarn sported two fusion cannons. Rules of Disengagement

Beast Wars cartoon
Megatron loved his fusion cannon so much, he had another fusion cannon installed on the Nemesis. The blast radius from this weapon is massive. Most kickass, though this one requires a power up time to fire again which is less kickass. Nemesis Part 2

Although not Megatron's, according to Beast Wars, the Ark's cannon was also a generic fusion cannon. The Agenda (Part III)

Beast Machines
Megatron's personal chariot, Mechatron, comes equipped with a fusion cannon to nullify any accursed Maximal that comes across.

Live-action continuity
Megatron's fusion cannon is one of the most powerful weapons known to Transformers. Drawing energy from an unknown interdimensional source, the fusion cannon fires gamma-irradiated plasma at a target.

Megatron's cannon is presumably telescopic, as he keeps it stored retracted in his left arm when not in use. Its powerful blast is enough to knock Optimus Prime back three city blocks and requires both arms to steady the aim. This is most likely because Megatron is always concerned about collateral damage, or making sure he hits. Transformers (film)

After his resurrection, Megatron still possessed his fusion cannon but in a more compact form from which he could now access with his Death-lock pincer that also featured an attached sword. A point blank shot can still send Optimus Prime flying back several yards. Later, after impaling Optimus with the sword, Megatron finished off the job by firing the fusion cannon right through Optimus.

Following his resurrection, Optimus later turned the fusion cannon against Megatron during the final battle in Egypt...by blowing off half of his face and then severing it and part of Megatron's arm off with his own Energon sword. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (film)

Megatron was later able to obtain another fusion cannon, albeit a handheld one which resembled a human shotgun. He used it on a number of occasions. Optimus later used it to execute Sentinel Prime. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (film)

It is also mentioned on Ironhide's toy packaging that he also carries a fusion cannon; presumably it is the blue glowing laser weapon on his left arm, though it is obviously much smaller than Megatron's.

Animated cartoon
Megatron's iconic cannon served admirably as a cutting torch when Megatron sought to gain access to the Autobots' ship. Transform and Roll Out After Megatron's revival, his newly rebuilt fusion cannon proved even more effective against the Autobot ship by knocking it clean out of the sky in under a minute with some help from Lugnut and Blitzwing. It also has an optical targeting lens... sometimes. Megatron Rising - Part 2 It was instrumental in repeatedly killing the newly-immortal Starscream, Mission Accomplished and was effectively used in the capture of Bulkhead. A Bridge Too Close, Part I

Eventually, it and his other miscellaneous weapons were removed when he was captured by Omega Supreme's internal defenses. Optimus Prime discovered painfully that Megatron was not as weak without it as he had hoped. TransWarped Megatron later restored it to its rightful place on his arm, and used it as his primary weapon when he fought Optimus in the air. It survived the explosion of a Lugnut Supreme, despite being damaged. Megatron shot Optimus Prime with it again, but this time it was ineffective, and Optimus destroyed it with the Magnus Hammer

Notably Megatron, despite always precisely hitting Starscream, rarely manages to aim correctly when facing the Autobots. The writers were likely reluctant to have half the cast atomized in the space of five seconds, but to be fair, Starscream was unsurprisingly at point blank range for nearly every shot.

Megatron's fusion cannon is eventually destroyed at the hands of Optimus Prime with Ultra Magnus's Magnus Hammer. Endgame, Part II

* Generation 1 Megatron's on-package bio says that his weapon is a particle beam cannon.
* His Generation 1 on-package bio also mentioned he can "link up interdimensionally to a black hole and use anti-matter from it for use as a weapon," without elaborating further. This, however, is a truncated version of the full bio provided to Transformers writers and later published in The Transformers Universe, which explains that his cannon draws on the antimatter as a power source. Apparently working from the shortened version, Simon Furman wrote two stories in the Marvel UK comics where Megatron channeled the antimatter through his body, unleashing it through his hands the first time and through his eyes the second time. It manifested as a black, starry cloud that caused explosions. A similar situation occurred in the cartoon. Megatron was never shown to possess antimatter-channeling abilities, but he was shown to possess an anti-matter blaster in "Enter the Nightbird". Like every Decepticon weapon in the cartoon, it produced a purple laserbeam, though one that "absorbed" energy. The fusion cannon-power-source interpretation has never featured in a story.
* The deep percussive note at the beginning of the iconic fusion cannon sound effect (used throughout Generation 1 and Animated) is an old "stock" sound used frequently in American animation, most notably within Hanna-Barbera's Scooby Doo where it was used to signify cast members or objects falling on the ground, running into walls, etc.
* According to the Transformers: Mystery of Convoy strategy guide, Megatron's fusion cannon functions as a flame thrower. No wonder he got defeated easily, at least in the comic featuring in the strategy guide.

Rung is a psy-ops specialist for the Autobot army. His reports are added to the Autopedia entries for each Autobot. He transforms into a communications maintenance vehicle with a long ladder-like repair arm. As part of his duties, he performs the mental assessments of potential Wreckers-to-be.

Fiction
IDW Generation 1 continuity
While hanging out at Macadam's Old Oil House, Rung spilled a cadet's drink. After refusing to clean up the spill, the poor bot was tossed across the bar, right onto Impactor and Megatron's table. Chaos Theory Part 1

Rung did a psychological evaluation of Impactor before his trial for unlawful executions. He ended up being physically assaulted and threatened with extreme violence if he tried 'putting ideas' in Impactor's head, but managed to calm the situation down. In the end, Rung was left questioning whether Autobot High Command shared the blame for Impactor's crimes for turning a blind eye to the robot's growing psychopathy. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 5

Rung later performed a pre-mission psych-screening on new Wreckers Rotorstorm, Ironfist, Pyro, and Guzzle to estimate if they were suited to be put on the Garrus-9 case. Rung was unimpressed by Rotorstorm's unrelenting bragging and joking, and found himself cutting through the charade when he mentioned Simanzi. Taking note of his dual personality, Rung declared him cleared for mission. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 1 With Pyro, he diagnosed the robot as an extreme sufferer of Primus apotheosis and noted with sadness that the robot was suppressing his own engaging personality for a copy of another's. He cleared Pyro with reservations, noting that apotheosis sufferers were known for sacrificing themselves. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 5 With Guzzle, he cleared the 'bot as having personality flaws but no real psychological flaws, though he was unnerved by his disturbing habit of playing with his gun's safety. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 5

When screening Ironfist, he was impressed by his enthusiasm and knowledge, but not so much by his actual combat experience and mentality. Rung advised against Ironfist's participation, but retracted his negative conclusion when he received 'unsolicited advice' from an undisclosed party. Last Stand of the Wreckers issue 4

Rung treated the shell-shocked Autobot Flattop. He discovered Flattop was a survivor of the Babu Yar atrocity, but that was not his immediate problem. What pushed him over the edge this time was an encounter with the Shimmer. Rung tried to give rational explanations for the appearance of Shimmer, but Flattop died right there in his office. Bullets

Kup, one of Rung's oldest friends, asked him to examine Springer after a zero point affliction had left him in a coma. Believing that certain emotional triggers could cause Springer's subconscious to force his spark across the zero point, Rung asked Roadbuster to read Wreckers: Declassified datalogs to him in hopes that the memories would have some effect. Zero Point

Rung was among the survivors of Cyclonus's attack on Kimia Facility. He and the others drifted in a cramped escape pod for some time until they were rescued by Arcee. Chaos Part Three: Kings

After Cybertron was reborn in the wake of the D-Void's defeat, Rung joined Rodimus's crew on the Lost Light in search for the Knights of Cybertron. Before he could get on the ship, his arm was detached by a wildly flying Cyclonus. Liars, A to D Part 1: How to Say Goodbye and Mean It After getting his arm repaired in Ratchet's care, Rung was choked by an irrational and unresponsive Whirl. The psychiatrist managed to get him to release his grip when he reminded Whirl that he would go back to prison, forever, if he didn't stay in line. When Skids joined the crew, Rung informed him of their quest. Liars, A to D Part 2: Hangers On Rung later had a close call with a Sparkeater, but was saved by Skids. Rodimus used the two to lure the Sparkeater so he could defeat it. Liars, A to D Part 3: The Chaos of Warm Things

Red Alert, having previously been one of Rung's longest-standing patients, returned to therapy shortly after the launch of the Lost Light. Rung was concerned that all the progress they had made on Red Alert's rampant paranoia over the years was coming undone. Red Alert informed Rung that he was hearing noises coming from a crack in the floor of the Sparkeater's chamber. He gave him a recording of the noise which Rung vaguely recognized as a voice, albeit tremendously slowed-down. When they sped the sound up, the words "kill...me" could be identified. How Ratchet Got His Hands Back

Rung held a session with the newly-returned Fortress Maximus, whose mental state had been called into question after he had suffered torture and humiliation at the hands of Overlord for three years. Rung urged him to open up and explore his trauma, to no avail. Maximus later snapped and went on a rampage across the Lost Light, gunning down Autobots that reminded him of Overlord. Rung was in the middle of a session with Whirl when Max broke in and took them both hostage. Rung was bound to his chair and Whirl was overpowered and pinned to the ground. Rung tried to reason with Maximus, while simultaneously recording and broadcasting what was happening in his office through the microphone in his thumb. When Maximus noticed it, he tore Rung's thumb off.

As the situation dragged on, Rung continued to try and break through to Maximus. Max kept dodging the issue, pinning the reason for his actions on Prowl's delay in sending help to Garrus-9, instead of acknowledging that Overlord was at the root of his psychosis. Maximus then confronted Whirl, who told Maximus about his life. Rung expressed wonder at this, as there were details that Whirl told Maximus that he's never told Rung. Whirl replied that Rung had never threatened any of his friends, to Rung's visible surprise. When a holo-image of Overlord torturing him was projected into the room by Rewind, Maximus froze up and crumbled to his knees. Rung tenderly comforted him and the hostage situation appeared to be at an end. Unfortunately, a shot from Swerve meant to disable Fortress Maximus instead hit Rung in the head. A memorial service was later held for Rung, which Rodimus presided over. Interiors

Rules of Disengagement

Surprisingly, Rung's spark and brain module survived and the medical staff believed he might pull through: something Ratchet said was akin to a miracle. Later, after a visit by Skids and a horrified Swerve, Red Alert came to see the comatose psychiatrist. Believing that Rung's near-death was a result of the recording he had played to Rung, the paranoid security officer said he couldn't tell anyone else the truth he'd discovered — the voice was Overlord's, the sadistic Decepticon "strung up and sedated" in the bowels of the Lost Light. Expecting to be killed himself, he left a data slug of his findings in Rung's hand and said goodbye. Unfortunately, a Diagnostic Drone had recorded Red Alert's confession, and summoned a mysterious figure who removed the slug... Rules of Disengagement
Notes
* A psychoanalyst named Rung was referenced in the unofficial Transformers novel Eugenesis, written by James Roberts.
* The name "Rung" is a reference to Carl Jung, founder of analytical psychology. The mention of "Rungian analysis" in "How to Say Goodbye and Mean It" is a further play on this.
* Incidentally, the above reference to "Rungian analysis" came from Tailgate on his way to the original Ark. This means Rung was an established psychotherapist as far back as six million years ago, in the times of Nova Prime, making him one of the few identified survivors of that era.

:Garnak is an alien from the Generation 1 continuity family.

Garnak is a big dumb lug, only good for taking orders yet just barely qualified to be a janitor. Still, he's friendly enough, especially if you're willing to rescue him from being shipwrecked.

Fiction
IDW comics continuity
Garnak and his boss Codder were both from a "collective", from which they were sold to an Ilxian ship where Garnak worked as a custodian. At some point, the ship crashed on planet LV-118, killing everyone on board other than him, Codder, and an Ilxian scientist. The Ilxian developed quite an ego, calling himself "Admiral" and ordering Garnak and Codder around during his attempts to repair the ship, but since he was earnestly trying to get them off the planet, the two listened to him.

After being stuck on the planet for a long time, Garnak and Codder discovered the Autobot Rodimus when he too crashed in the vicinity, and found him similar to the weird "Jangle Man" who lived on LV-118. Though Garnak wanted to show him to the Jangle Man, Codder thought it better to take him to the Admiral. The Admiral tried to use Rodimus's Matrix to power the ship, but he resisted and fled, prompting Garnak and Codder to try to recapture him. Garnak followed him to the Jangle Man's wrecked ship, where he was knocked out by the Jangle Man himself and interrogated by Rodimus. After telling Rodimus about how he got there and what he knew about Wheelie, Garnak agreed to be a part of his plan to steal the Admiral's ship. Returning to the Admiral with Rodimus, Garnak tricked him and Codder into coming outside, where Wheelie called on a Chaosteros to attack them. While his old companions were fighting off the beast, Garnak boarded their ship with the two Autobots and left the planet. Space Opera Part 1: The Stars My Destination

Wheelie steered the ship to Cybertron, where after greeting a newly awoken and confused Rodimus, Garnak noted that the Matrix had stopped powering their ship. When the ship was then suddenly broken into, Rodimus sent him to get weapons,
and he soon returned and attacked the intruder... who turned out to be Ironhide, another Autobot. They were then attacked by Galvatron's Sweeps and forced to go back into space, now with some additional crew members. Space Opera Act 2: Out of the Silent Planet

The crew's next destination was Earth, where the Autobots reunited with Optimus Prime's troops. Garnak was seen sheepishly greeting two tiny humans, Spike Witwicky and Joe Henderson, and continued to follow Rodimus when he and the other Autobots returned to Cybertron to defeat Galvatron. Space Opera—Final Tableaux: Orphans of the Helix

As the Autobots reached Cybertron, Rodimus had Garnak tell Optimus Prime and Jetfire that Galvatron was sending them a welcome message from the planet's surface. Chaos Part One: Lamentations He remained on board Omega Supreme as fighting broke out and all flying Autobots attacked Galvatron's Kimia Facility. When Trailbreaker was damaged trying to stop Kimia's cannon from firing, Garnak and Sunstreaker took care of him. Chaos Part Two: Numbers He lived through the crash landing that followed, and helped Sunstreaker load explosives onto his hoverchair in preparation for an attack on Devastator. Chaos Part Three: Kings

After the Chaos war, feeling that Cybertron was no place for him, Garnak joined up with Wheelie and Hardhead on their chosen mission to stand guard over the captive Jhiaxus, leaving the planet behind. Some time into their self-imposed exile, a signal from Arduria caused the mad scientist to begin screaming Orion Pax's name, so Hardhead's team joined up with the former Autobot leader to investigate the planet. Charged with guarding Jhiaxus during the visit to Arduria, Garnak and Wheelie realized they had walked into a Decepticon trap when they were attacked by Bludgeon. Although Garnak survived his altercation with the deranged Decepticon, he lost an eye in the process and was unable to stop Bludgeon from freeing Jhiaxus. Syndromica (1)
