'''Galvatron''' is a force of nature. Born from the machinations of [[Unicron]] himself, Galvatron is the conflation of madness and power, given form. He is blind to all but, his lust for power, his whims and desires at the mercy of the moment. Not even his own subordinates are safe. Though he is not beyond the capacity for long-term goals, it is his unpredictability and his casual disregard for any and all life that strikes such horror in friend and foe alike.

Galvatron was once [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]], but reborn from his death throes in a Faustian pact with Unicron. Despite retaining the memories, spark and consciousness of Megatron, the near-death experience and massive physical upgrade led to a degree of alteration in personality, something further affected by his now-questionable sanity.

In 2005, after being mortally wounded by [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] during the [[Battle of Autobot City]], [[Megatron (G1)|Megatron]] was left to float aimlessly through space. He was summoned by [[Unicron]], who offered him a new body, a warship and new troops to command, so long as he destroyed the [[Autobot]] [[Matrix of Leadership]]. Megatron reluctantly accepted and was upgraded into '''Galvatron''', a more fearsome and powerful warrior.

Galvatron quickly retook command of the Decepticons after killing the traitorous [[Starscream (G1)|Starscream]] in the middle of his coronation as the Decepticons' new leader. He then went to Earth and attacked [[Autobot City]], full-force. [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] lead him away from Earth and Galvatron chased him to the [[Junkion (planet)|Planet of Junk]], where he defeated Magnus and took the Matrix, intending to use it against Unicron.

Galvatron could not open the Matrix, however, and as punishment for his treachery, Unicron swallowed him whole. Inside Unicron's belly, he met up with [[Hot Rod]]. Though he initially suggested an alliance with the young Autobot against the mutual threat of his master, the Chaos Bringer mentally tortured Galvatron for his attempted treachery and then forced him to attack Hot Rod. Hot Rod eventually managed to wrest the Matrix away from Galvatron and open it, leading to his transformation into Rodimus Prime. Flush with new power, Rodimus hurled Galvatron's from inside Unicron and into deep space. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie}} But that was not the end of Galvatron. {{storylink|The Transformers: The Movie|TFTM}}

In the year 2006 (or 2010, if you're Japanese), [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] and [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] set out to find their lost leader and return the Decepticons to glory. They found him sunk in a lava pit on the distant planet [[Thrull]] and managed to free him. However, the effects of the "plasma bath" irrevocably altered Galvatron's sanity chips, rendering him omnicidally insane. Upon regaining his freedom he thrashed Cyclonus and Scourge and sundered Thrull. {{storylink|Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2}}

Galvatron led the Decepticons on many wacky adventures against the Autobots, though usually botching it in the end due to his craziness (he loved shooting his own troops). At one point, his derangement became so severe, the perpetually loyal Cyclonus was left little choice but to dupe Galvatron into taking therapy sessions (albeit, by force) on [[Torkulon]], the therapy-planet. After nearly murdering a attendant during a word-association session, and somehow building a gun in an arts and crafts class, Galvatron was deemed incurable by conventional methods. The doctors attempted to use living extensions of the planet to give him a lobotomy (much to Cyclonus' disapproval), but Galvatron broke free and murdered the sentient organic core of the planet. After that, he razed the entire planet's civilization, leaving them so broken it would take centuries to rebuild. {{storylink|Webworld}}

However, despite his insanity, he teamed-up with the resurrected Optimus Prime to stop the [[Hate Plague]]. He wound-up becoming infected by the plague and attempted to kill an unconscious Optimus Prime with a axe. Optimus woke up just in the nick of time and opened the [[Matrix of Leadership|Matrix]] directly in Galvatron's face. The wisdom of the Matrix not only cured the Universe of the Hate Plague, but cured Galvatron of his madness, as well. Grateful, Galvatron sanely declared "There will be no war today, Optimus. You have earned Galvatron's respect" and called a brief truce. {{storylink|The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2}}

Later, Galvatron called the truce off and led an assault on Autobot City, searching for the Key to the [[Plasma Energy Chamber]]. Although seemingly lucid during this story-arc, it was perhaps his most genocidal and unbalanced plan ever - having converted Cybertron into a galactic dreadnaught, Galvatron maneuvered it into Earth's orbit, and planned to release the Plasma Energy Chamber's payload into Earth's sun Sol. The resulting supernova would wipe both Earth and Cybertron off the face of the galaxy, presumably leaving Galvatron to gain mastery over everything left. Grudgingly teamed with the Transformer-[[Nebulan]] hybrid, [[Scorponok (G1)|Lord Zarak]], Galvatron was eventually defeated and sent tumbling through space,ushering Cybertron into a new Golden Age. After regaining control, Galvatron vowed to collect energy from disparate corners of the galaxy and return to Cybertron - "we shall attack other planets, we shall suck them dry! We shall build a planet a hundred times more powerful than Cybertron and I shall rule the galaxy!" - though Scorponok made it clear he questioned his leadership. {{storylink|The Rebirth, Part 3}}

At the end of the Unicron War of 2005, [[Rodimus Prime]] hurled Galvatron out of [[Unicron]] and into space. The Decepticon leader crash-landed on the planet [[Earth]], obliterating the city of [[Tokyo]]. This catastrophic incident soured [[human]]-[[Transformer]] relations and led to the formation of the [[Earth Defense Command]], a governmental organization created to drive Transformers from the face of the planet.

Galvatron's Unicron-twisted cells, dispersed by the collision, spread throughout Earth's atmosphere. Born from these cells were the [[Legion]], an army of savage and vicious Transformers. As [[Hot Rod]] and [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Star Convoy]] prepared to battle [[Megatron (G1)|Ultra Megatron]] and [[Dark Nova]], a massive blast suddenly rained down through a [[Transwarp]] wormhole overhead. Badly damaged, Hot Rod could barely warn his commander as the maddened Galvatron descended through the portal.

Tearing the right arm off of Hot Rod's fragile companion, the mobile computer [[Teletraan 15]], Galvatron gripped the limb in his teeth as he maniacally throttled the much smaller Autobot.

Waking up some time later with the outcome of the battle unknown, Teletraan 15 remained haunted by images of the crazed Decepticon clutching her limp and helpless friend. {{storylink|Teletraan Go! Go!}}

Galvatron appeared regularly throughout the manga supplementing ''Transformers 2010'' (Season 3), which acted as a supplement to the animated shows. Some of his devious schemes from the manga included creating a clone army of Megatrons, dubbed the [[Megatron Military]], and forcing a human scientist named [[Dalton]] to create weapons of destruction for him. He even fought alongside his nemesis Rodimus Prime against [[Guiltor]], a strange fusion of Optimus Prime and Megatron that threatened to destroy both leaders.

In 2011, Galvatron reactivated the Decepticon [[Space Bridge]] on Cybertron and began a sneak-attack on the Autobots. He intended to hack into [[Vector Sigma]], though was thwarted just in time. Later Scorponok, Galvatron's new mysterious assistant from [[Master (planet)|Planet Master]], went against Galvatron's orders and placed bombs all around Vector Sigma.{{storylink|Cybertron is in Grave Danger, Part 1}} Galvatron rushed to Vector Sigma but could not deactivate the bombs in time and was caught in the ensuing explosion, which was powerful enough to destroy Cybertron.{{storylink|Cybertron is in Grave Danger, Part 2}}

Galvatron was thought dead for some time, until he returned alive and well a few months later.{{storylink|Return of the Immortal Emperor}} He retook command of the Decepticons and enacted a new devious plot. Galvatron intended to transform Earth into his new Unicron-like body dubbed "[[Grand Galvatron]]", making him all-powerful. He told this news only to his most trusted warrior, [[Sixshot]], and also delivered the news that he intended to sacrifice all the Decepticons for parts to build the body. Not a good idea, as Sixshot betrayed him to Scorponok and Galvatron was left all alone to Battle the Autobot [[Headmasters]] in the North Pole. Beaming down from the sky on a ball of light, the silent and menacing Galvatron stormed the battle. Transforming into cannon mode, Galvatron fired a blast of energy at Ultra Magnus, who quickly transformed to robot mode and engaged his foe in hand-to-hand combat. Galvatron was a crew member on the first [[Ark]], launched during Cybertron's Golden Age. However, he and the ship were lost in an anomaly in the [[Benzuli Expanse]], and he then became the herald for whatever dark master existed in what he referred to as the [[Dead Universe]]. Galvatron asserts that he himself is now dead, whatever that will turn out to mean. He has incredible self-repair capabilities, recovering almost immediately after [[Sideswipe (G1)|Sideswipe]] blew off part of his head. Returning to Cybertron soon after [[Thunderwing (G1)|Thunderwing]]'s [[Stormbringer|resurrection and defeat]], Galvatron succeeded in seizing the huge [[Pretender]]'s remains. While on that mission, he ''crushed [[Leadfoot]] with his bare hands!''

He rather impassively states that he has killed "many" Megatrons in other alternate realities, however he is ultimately destroyed by this timeline's native [[Megatron (Armada)|Megatron]] with the power of the [[Dark Saber]].

Some fans believe Galvatron is a psychologically distinct and discontinuous entity from Megatron, almost, or equally, as much as [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]] and [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]] who demonstrate no continuity of memory or personality to their former Decepticon selves. This remains a topic of heated debate in some circles, in spite of a fairly unambiguous canon.

In the G1 animated continuity, Galvatron evidently still self-identifies as being the same person as Megatron, albeit with greater power and a new name. Although not making a point of revealing this former identity to his troops at large (perhaps to cast off the potential stigma of being a "defeated"/successfully deposed leader), Galvatron makes his sense of self clear when Starscream asks "Megatron? Is that you?", to which he replies "Here's a hint" before obliterating him.<ref>Some fans claim the "Here's a hint" line is a point in favor of Galvatron ''not'' being Megatron, instead of the far more likely intended affirmation, since Megatron "would never kill Starscream." However most fans would probably agree that Starscream had simply never pissed Megatron off enough to actually kill him before.</ref> Later in ''[[The Transformers: The Movie (1986)|The Transformers: The Movie]]'' when Galvatron is poised to crush [[Hot Rod]]'s neck, he boasts: "First Prime, then Ultra Magnus, and now you. It's a pity you Autobots die so easily, or I might have a sense of satisfaction." Again, Galvatron is obviously speaking with no sense of discontinuity of identity or personality as he refers to past and current acts as both Megatron and Galvatron without qualification or distinction.

While some might contrast this statement, however, with his earlier line, "I shall crush you, just as Megatron crushed Prime,", interpreting that such a statement implies a disconnect from his former life, this too can easily be explained by Galvatron's apparent reluctance to allow his troops know that he used to be Megatron. While Galvatron would have fully expected the knowledge imparted in the later statement to Hot Rod to die with the callow youth, the declaration to Ultra Magnus was made in public, with his troops (and, potentially, other Autobots in earshot) present.

During season three, however, Galvatron made little or no further references to his past life as Megatron, though this could be a side effect of lying in a pool of lava for several months and his increasing insanity. Upon meeting the resurrected Optimus Prime in ''The Return of Optimus Prime'', Galvatron behaved as though simply picking up where he left off with his old nemesis from his Megatron days, as did Prime, saying that he knew him "all too well", indicating that the Autobot leader was capable of recognising his former adversary despite the change in name and appearance. Furthermore, in ''Five Faces of Darkness'', Astrotrain states that Megatron and Galvatron are "the same guy," implying that during Galvatron's absence, the other Decepticons (or, at the very least, Astrotrain) figured out what was going on.

And yet despite all that, a memorial of Megatron can be seen prominantly in the [[Decepticon Crypt]], implying that the Decepticons who built it considered Megatron to be dead. This could possibly be explained that the Decepticons built the marker before Galvatron returned and seized command, though their window of opportunity to build the thing was rather slim. {{storylink|Starscream's Ghost}}

Early advertisements for the Galvatron toy presented the character as an all-together separate being from Megatron, and in some cases, even being Megatron's ''underling''. The second [[Scramble City]] OVA was a remake of the original animated version, albeit including the Galvatron toy for promotion. Galvatron appears to fight his nemesis, Ultra Magnus, as Megatron barks orders from the background. This is likely due to Takara wishing to advertise the toy as quickly as possible, without full knowledge of the character's history. To maintain Galvatron's mystique, he was given the function of "City Commander", with no indication that he was an upgraded Megatron. Continuing this trend of unintentional disassociation, very early promotional artwork featured in [[TV Magazine]] and [[Comics Bom Bom]] also presented Galvatron as a separate character.

However, this era was very short-lived. In all official Japanese fiction, including the [[manga]] and the Japanese-exclusive cartoons, Galvatron is locked in as an upgrade of Megatron.

A good example would be the ''[[Battlestars]]'' series. Upon being resurrected and further upgraded, Galvatron reverted to the name Megatron once more (as [[Megatron (G1)#Battlestars: Return of Convoy (Japan-only)|Super Megatron]]).

===Marvel Comics===

In the US and UK Marvel comics the various time-hopping Galvatrons all demonstrate an awareness of having previously been Megatron with no strong indicators of a break in psychological identification. Indeed, at one point, a Galvatron said outright, "Like Megatron? No - I AM Megatron!" The closest that these Galvatrons came to identity crisis were incidents in which a time-displaced Galvatron was confronted by Megatrons (or copies thereof) and did battle with his former self. Although in these instances Galvatron experiences trains of thought that suggest he sees Megatron as a separate being and/or the source of his madness that needs to be destroyed, it should be noted that these are not the musings of a calm, rational mind. In these instances Galvatron is in the grips of a psychotic episode, which he generally snaps out of by realising that he is indeed the same person.

A possible explanation for why (any version of) Galvatron retains psychological continuity with Megatron while his fellow Unicron-creations do not may be that [[Thundercracker]] et al were apparently already dead or in total stasis-lock at the time of their reformatting, and thus it is widely speculated that only their bodies were used to create Cyclonus and company. Whether this indicates that they retained their sparks and merely suffered total mind-wipes (either as the result of recent death or by Unicron's doing), or if Unicron actually infused their reformatted bodies with new life-forces is unknown. (On the other hand, none of the other Unicron-created Decepticons have faced their past selves or deeds the way Galvatron has.) Megatron, by comparison, was clearly alive and awake at the time of his reformatting and struck a bargain with Unicron for "a new body", a deal which implies that his mind would remain his own.

Using a 9-volt battery, he has a light-up cannon in gun mode, light-up eyes in robot mode, and variable electronic warbly noises in any mode. Galvatron is notable in being one of the most well-articulated toys in the ''Generation 1'' line, with ratcheting shoulders and hips, as well as swivel waist, elbows, mid-biceps, knees, and ankle joints. He was also armed with a small black laser rifle.

He also came with a Matrix on a chain to be worn around his neck as in the movie. It also uses two AA batteries, rather than the previous 9-volt.

The only [[Super Hybrid Model]] ever officially released, this Galvatron was initially available in two versions: "standard" purple, and a translucent orange "lava bath" version limited to 100 pieces. In subsequent years at least two more versions of this figure would be released for online sale--one that replaced the orange paint on the cannon barrel with an orange molded plastic piece, and another that replaced the entire purple body coloration with royal blue. The figures have articulation comparable with Metalforce statue of [[Optimus Prime]], with useful swivel joints at the neck and shoulders, less useful swivels sideways at the biceps and knees, and a rather useless "shrugging action" in the waist.

* Galvatron was part of the second "Act" of Takara's [[Super Collection Figure]], a soft-plastic PVC of his cartoon model in both full-color and all-clear plastics, one each per case of twelve. A metallic painted version of this figure was one of the chase items in act 6. *Galvatron's toy bio was apparently written with the intention of him being a new character who coexisted with Megatron: he has a rank of 9 and the function "City Commander," with no mention of him having once been Megatron. Given the omission of similar details from Rodimus Prime's bio, it is likely that this was done to avoid spoiling the surprise of Galvatron's origin in the movie.

*The Galvatron toy's gun mode's only fictional appearances were in the UK comics, which featured it as a shrunken, human-scaled weapon, and a form that he assumed merely so that he could easily be conveyed by other parties, but never wielded as a weapon.

*Galvatron's toy bio states that his cannon is a "laser which emits chemically-produced direct-current electricity". Though Galvatron's toy's batteries are not galvanic cells, they do produce DC electricity chemically, making his toy one of the more fiction-accurate in the Generation 1 line.

* The Autobots use the element [[Solitarium]] to continue construction of Scramble City. They rewrite [[Fortress Maximus (RID)|Fortress Maximus]] (a.k.a. [[Cybertron Base]])'s central systems accordingly.

* Dimensional fissures called the [[Blasty Zone]] appear, and Transformers from various eras are transported to the year 2004. The Predacon Megatron arrives and defeats Starscream, taking over command of the Decepticons on Earth.

* Optimus Prime and the other Autobots on Earth are attacked by the Decepticons led by the Predacon Megatron. Prime remembers having met a future Transformer aboard the Ark 3 million years before. A timestorm occurs, and Optimus Primal is summoned from prehistoric Earth.

* In order to bolster their ranks on [[Earth]], the Autobots develop the [[GT System]], which creates same-personality duplicates. However, its side effects are unknown.

* Under the E.D.C.'s leadership, a replica [[Zoom-Zoom|automaton]] with artificial intelligence is created in Japan. This is the birth of man-made Transformers.

* In order to find the truth about the "Bad Production Incident" that created the Binaltech Decepticons, an expert team led by D.R. Faireborn works with Autobots including [[Jazz]] to enact [[Operation: Carwash]].

* [[Star Saber (G1)|Star Saber]] and [[Victory Leo]] arrive from the future, having pursued the Strong Attack Captain Decepticon [[Gigant Bomb]], who came through the Blasty Zone.

==2005==

* The remaining members of the disbanded American intelligence agency [[Intelligence and Information Institute|Triple-I]] succeed in analyzing the flight recorder of a future Transformer's spaceship, which they had unearthed and safeguarded since the previous century. They discover the future Decepticon [[Ravage]]'s "Central Consciousness File X-9." Using the life force of the current Ravage, who had been captured by the E.D.C., he is reborn as the Binaltech Ravage. However, sensing that his plan to change history 3 million years before had failed, Ravage once again begins to try to alter the timeline.

* [[Lio Convoy]] comes through the [[Bloody Zone]] ''(possibly a typo for Blasty Zone)'' from a future in which humans are extinct on Earth.

* Ravage repairs Shockwave's [[Chronosphere]] time machine. He traps the on-the-verge-of-victory Megatron and the other Decepticon forces around Cybertron between dimensions, their mobile fortress and all. He intends to protect the Decepticons from Unicron's imminent arrival and to allow the Autobots to exhaust themselves battling Unicron. Then the Decepticons will reemerge and reign supreme.

* Ravage from another point in the future makes contact with [[Teletraan I]] in order to use the Transformers' "Bio and [[Tech Spec]]" data to manipulate the timestream and create a future without needless battles. He is stopped by the humanoid computer Mobile [[Teletraan 15]], who has traveled back in time from 2007. As a result, Teletraan I is damaged and the data is lost.

* In order to regain the lost data, Ravage takes on the identity of "Black Panther Man" and infiltrates the Autobots. He instructs the Teletraan 15 of 2005 to travel to different eras via [[Transwarp]] and creates an Information Control Center based on the record satellite [[Nana]].

* Megatron, who has been missing, is reborn as Rebirth Megatron through the black hole connection system possessed by the [[Reverse Convoy]] of planet [[Vehicon (RM)|Vehicon]].

* The Autobot technician [[Wheeljack (G1)|Wheeljack]] discovers through information gathered from Ravage that in the near future, he and many other Autobots will die in the Unicron War. He sees a way to avoid this fate in the GT System, which makes it possible to replicate personalities. He initiates [[Operation: Body Shop]], creating replicas of himself.

* Injured in the battle over solitarium, Optimus Prime gains the power of the [[Energon Matrix]] possessed by the many Prime-type warriors gathered from different eras. He rids Earth of Decepticons. The Autobots use the last of the solitarium to return the time-lost Autobots and the captured Decepticons to their original eras.

* The [[Interplanetary Personnel Exchange Program]], highly praised due to the excellent work of Autobot police officer [[Clamp Down]], is expanded to include [[Red Alert (G1)|Red Alert]], [[Sunstreaker]], and other Binaltech Autobots. They attempt to promote peaceful co-existence by [[Binaltech Asterisk|partnering]] with humans and taking on jobs.

* The Autobots attempt to undo the change in history that the Binaltech Ravage caused. Autobot theoretician [[Skids (G1)|Skids]] directs "[[Operation: Distant Thunder]]" in an attempt to send a warning to the past. If it succeeds, history will return to normal, but the Autobots will lose to the Decepticons, Cybertron will be conquered by Megatron, and the great darkness of Unicron will arrive.

* Operation: Distant Thunder fails. A mysterious entity called "The Protector" creates a bypass, creating two parallel worlds: one with the true progression of events, and the other with the altered history of the Binaltech Project. The world where the altered history continues will eventually lead to the great [[Alternity]].

* In the world where history flows as it should, [[Unicron]] the Great Devourer appears and the [[The Transformers: The Movie|Unicron War]] begins. Eventually, the Tokyo E.D.C. is at the center of a movement to force Transformers off the Earth. There are some who believe that the Concurrence is behind this sudden change in direction, but it is not known for certain.

* The E.D.C. summons Kiss Players from across the country and begins to remove Cybertronians using white artificial Transformers called [[Autrooper]]s.<ref name="kissplayers"/>

* The E.D.C. develops an [[anti-electron]] field that greatly lowers the life functions of Cybertronians and covers the planet with it, thus driving all remaining Transformers off the Earth.

* [[Hot Rod|Rodimus Prime]], devastated by the thought that his actions caused humanity and Transformers to go to war with each other, returns both the Matrix and the title of Commander to Ultra Magnus and becomes Hot Rod once more.

* Some civilians oppose the unilateral actions of the E.D.C. to remove the Transformers and form a resistance movement. Marissa Faireborn is seen among them.

==2006==

* "Over-Technology" is used to rebuild the city of Tokyo at a fever pitch.

* In May, just as peace is restored, hordes of an unknown Transformer species called Legion appear. The Legion creatures roam cities and attack a small number of humans, as though there is some special quality that they are looking for.

* To fight the Legion forces, the E.D.C. uses Galvatron's cells to mass-produce black-and-white Autroopers. When fused with Kiss Players, they can fight on equal footing with Legion creatures.

* In June, [[Atari Hitotonari]]'s parents are killed by Legion.

* Atari is attacked by a Legion and fuses with Shaoshao Li's Ne-04 Autrooper. She shows berserker-type abilities and destroys the Legion. She is identified as a Kiss Player.

* Atari joins the E.D.C. Tokyo Autrooper Team.

* Starscream's ghost possesses Atari and uses her Kiss Player abilities to fuse with a new body that he forces Dr. Arkeville to make for him. His plans end in failure, and he returns to being a ghost.

* The body of [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]], who died in the Unicron War, is transported from Autobot City in America to Tokyo via [[Narita Airport]]. The convoy carrying his corpse is attacked by the resistance and the plan to move him fails. An out-of-control Autrooper unit engages in a [[ParasiTech]] fusion with Prime's body. With the assistance of a Kiss Player from the resistance, Prime regenerates into a new body and is restored to life.

* Shaoshao Li is held captive in the underground experimentation facility beneath the Tokyo E.D.C. headquarters. A Legion attempts to fuse with her, but she is saved by the sudden appearance of Hot Rod. Hot Rod has a ParasiTech fusion with the Legion, but is reformatted by Shaoshao's Kiss Player abilities. From this day forward, Shaoshao is forced to spend her life fleeing from the E.D.C.<ref name="kissplayers"/>

* Prime, Marissa, Hot Rod, Shaoshao and Atari stop the human experimentation being carried out by the E.D.C.'s Commander [[Hitoshizuku Amaō|Amaō]] and the scattered cells are returned to Galvatron. * The human [[Ginrai]], who has fused with the body intended for Optimus Prime, eliminates Devil Z.

* Under the leadership of [[Star Saber (G1)|Star Saber]], the Autobots create the [[Space Peace Union]] and establish the [[Space Defense Army]] to fight the Decepticons. They use [[Planet V]] as their base.

* [[Magmatron]], who is obsessed with vengeance for Planet Dinosaur, which was attacked by Unicron in the past, attempts to collect the Angolmois capsules. Meanwhile, military instructor [[Big Convoy]] and his new recruits learn of the capsules via a message from Lio Convoy and make the capsules' collection their mission.

* The [[Blentron]]s, servants of Unicron, steal the capsules. Unicron resurrects as an energy being, and the second [[Great War]] begins. Unicron attacks [[Vector Sigma]] and is reborn as Vector Sigma Unicron, using Cybertron as his new body.

* Big Convoy, aided by Lio Convoy, uses the [[Matrix Buster]] to defeat Unicron, who has returned to being an energy being, and thus brings peace to the universe. Afterwards, Lio Convoy becomes [[Great Convoy]] and is promoted to the ruling body. After the graduation ceremony for the recruits, the Maximals and Predacons stop fighting and cooperate to rebuild Cybertron.

==Summary==
As Optimus lies defeated, Megatron stands gloating over his nemesis. To add insult to injury, Megatron has taken a new body...Primal's Optimal body, minus the [[beast mode]]. And, to make it just right, Megatron then adds the [[spark]]s of the [[Maximal]]s to the [[spark containment chamber]]. Enraged, Optimus fights back, breaking out, where he sees the sparkless bodies of [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]], [[Silverbolt (BW)|Silverbolt]], and [[Blackarachnia (BW)|Blackarachnia]]. As Megatron attacks, Primal flees to a power generator storage area, where he destroys several, causing Megatron to lose an arm. As Primal to a nearby river, he dives, only to have Megatron shot a hole in the ground, causing them to sink into a whirlpool.

As Optimus wakes up, he realizes he is in the [[Vector Sigma Chamber|chamber]] of [[Vector Sigma|the Oracle]]. However, the [[technorganic orchard]] has been razed, and he sees [[Rattrap]] and [[Botanica]] lying on the ground. Megatron then arrives, and takes him to the surface. Heading toward the [[Council Citadel]], Megatron activates a throne built into the Citadel to appear, then opens the spark chamber, absorbing the sparks and preparing to ascend to supplant the [[Allspark|Matrix]] and achieve [[Primus|Godhood]]. Primal tries to talk, but Megatron then activates the [[Key to Vector Sigma]], to be used against the [[organic core]]. However, Megatron cannot fully activate the Oracle, as he and Primal are linked. Megatron then severs the link, and Primal fears that he has failed. However, the sparks of his comrades speak to him, inspiring him on. Shooting two seeds near Megatron's arms, Primal then tries to knock him into the core. However, Megatron grabs hold of Optimus, who merely shoots off Megatron's fingers to sever the vine, allowing them both to fall into the core. At that point, both Optimus and Megatron die in the core. From space, a bright light rises, then begins to cover the surface of [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]].

Waking up, the Maximals find themselves in an organic world, which they realize is Cybertron. Rattrap is somewhat worried, then Botanica appears, and he jumps into her arms. As Silverbolt sweeps Blackarachnia off her feet, [[Waspinator]] appears as a tiny, [[technorganic]] wasp, pissed that he's been screwed over again. The first conflict between the stranded Predacons and their Maximal pursuers came when the Maximal [[Cheetor (BW)|Cheetor]] stumbled across Waspinator.

When [[Rhinox]] had his personality program converted to that of a Predacon, he started surreptitiously taking out the various Predacons. He swung a cargo crate into Waspinator, giving him a concussion. As a result, Waspy flew around in a daze, claiming to be the [[Insecticon (G1)|Insecticon]] [[Shrapnel (G1)|Shrapnel]] as well as the great Wonko the Sane. Brawl (here called "Devastator") was lying in wait at a military depot when Starscream contacted the Decepticon infiltration team, informing them that the All Spark had been found and they were to move out. Devastator acknowledged that he was in transit and rolled out of the depot. He met up with [[Barricade (Movie)|Barricade]] and [[Bonecrusher (Movie)|Bonecrusher]] and hit the highway, though Devastator separated from the group before Barricade and Bonecrusher got on the freeway and met up with Autobot/human convoy.

Arriving at [[Mission City]] in the aftermath of Starscream's opening attack on the Autobots and their [[William Lennox|human]] [[Robert Epps|allies]], Devastator fired shells from his main gun, narrowly missing several targets before running over vehicles abandoned by human bystanders. As the American soldiers fanned out in search of cover, the Autobots charged Devastator. He focused his attacks on [[Ironhide (Movie)|Ironhide]], who was forced to somersault over his shells. This distraction allowed the Autobot Jazz to jump on top of Devastator and point his cannon away from the humans. Devastator managed to transform and throw the smaller Autobot off him, but not before Jazz destroyed his left side rocket launcher pod.

Damaged, but not down, Devastator fired two rockets from his remaining launcher, missing the heavily armed Autobot as he somersaulted over the missiles. Ironhide and Jazz managed to fire several shots at Devastator, disorienting him. [[Ratchet (Movie)|Ratchet]] followed up by using his buzzsaw to slice off Devastator's left arm. Ratchet and the humans then fired a volley of sabot rounds, which knocked Devastator to the ground. The only thing that saved him was the Autobots and humans' retreat at the arrival of [[Megatron (Movie)|Megatron]]. Eventually, Ironhide and Ratchet disengaged from the battle as they left to protect [[Sam Witwicky|ladiesman217]], who was escaping with the All Spark, while Jazz took on Megatron. Now with fewer targets to deal with, Devastator sprayed heavy machine gun fire at the remaining humans, whose leader remarked that the battle was not going well.

Devastator continued to pin down the soldiers until the damaged Autobot [[Bumblebee (Movie)|Bumblebee]] suddenly attacked while on the back of of a tow truck driven by Ladiesman217's [[Mikaela Banes|female companion]]. With Bumblebee's plasma cannon being the deciding factor, the human soldiers rallied and fired more sabots, piercing Devastator's armor until a final shot from Bumblebee struck Devastator's spark and killed him.

In the first sequence of the film, a mechanical planet called [[Unicron]] is shown travelling through the depths of space, then approaching and destroying another metal planet called Lithone which has robotic inhabitants, much like [[Cybertron (planet)|Cybertron]]. During the attack, robots, vehicles, buildings, and even large chunks of rock float off the surface of the planet and spiral into the large "mouth" on Unicron.

The scene then transitions to Cybertron, and the narrator explains that it is the year 2005, and that the [[Decepticon]]s are now in control of the planet. The [[Autobot]]s are preparing to launch an assault to retake the planet from hidden bases on two of Cybertron's moons. The Autobots launch a [[Autobot shuttle|shuttle]] to pick up a final shipment of [[energon]] from [[Earth]] before they strike.

Plans for the attack are overheard by [[Laserbeak (G1)|Laserbeak]], who reports back to Megatron. The Decepticons attack the Autobot shuttle en route to Earth, wiping out its crew (including [[Ironhide (G1)|Ironhide]], [[Prowl (G1)|Prowl]], [[Ratchet (G1)|Ratchet]] and the [[Brawn (G1)|guy in the picture up there]]). Using the Autobots' own shuttle, the Decepticons are able to get very close to the Autobots' base on Earth, [[Autobot City]], before they are detected, and begin a devastating surprise attack on the unprepared city.

During the battle at Autobot City, both [[Optimus Prime (G1)|Optimus Prime]] and Megatron suffer mortal injuries, and a number of other characters are also killed. Eventually the Decepticons retreat, but the damage suffered by the Autobots has been severe. Shortly after the battle, Prime lies on his deathbed. He passes the reins of leadership to [[Ultra Magnus (G1)|Ultra Magnus]] and gives him the [[Matrix of Leadership]]. (Though Hot Rod actually touches the Matrix before Magnus does.) Prime relates a prophecy: "One day, an Autobot shall rise from our ranks, and use the power of the Matrix to light our [[darkest hour]]." He then gives the oath, "[['Til all are one]]", and dies. This sequence of events is observed remotely by Unicron, who appears unusually concerned by the survival of the Matrix.

The Decepticons are making their escape aboard [[Astrotrain (G1)|Astrotrain]], but are too heavy for him to get them all home under his own power. After putting the matter to a fair vote, the Decepticons decide to throw their injured members off the ship to better the chance of survival for the rest. One of the most severely injured Decepticons is Megatron. Starscream tosses him out and claims leadership of the Decepticon army.

Megatron and the other adrift Decepticons then encounter Unicron in interstellar space. Unicron offers to rebuild Megatron and his men in exchange for their service. Megatron reluctantly agrees, dies off under Unicron's power, and is reborn and [[reformatting|reformatted]] into [[Galvatron (G1)|Galvatron]]. The other Decepticons are turned into [[Cyclonus (G1)|Cyclonus]], [[Scourge (G1)|Scourge]], and [[The Sweeps]]. Unicron provides them with a [[Galvatron's ship|ship]], and sends them to kill Ultra Magnus and destroy the Matrix, stating that the Matrix is the only thing which can stand in his way.

Galvatron first stops at Cybertron to take his revenge by killing Starscream and reclaiming leadership of the Decepticons. Almost immediately afterwards, Unicron arrives in Cybertron's vicinity and devours at least two moons -- both of the Autobots' moon bases are destroyed. Under coercion by Unicron, Galvatron finally heads to Earth to kill Ultra Magnus, but Magnus and the other surviving Autobots flee in a pair of shuttles. Eventually Galvatron manages to cause one shuttle to crash on yet another metal planet ([[Quintessa]]), and detonates the other with a volley of missiles. However, the Autobots in the second shuttle escape unnoticed by separating the front portion of their shuttle just before impact.

The Autobots in the crashed shuttle, [[Hot Rod]], [[Kup]], and the [[Dinobot (G1)|Dinobots]], find themselves separated and in a hostile environment. Hot Rod and Kup are captured by a squad of [[Allicon]]s and taken before a [[Quintesson]] [[Quintesson judge|judge]] and his court. While being held there, they learn the name and nature of Unicron from [[Kranix]], a survivor of the planet destroyed in the opening of the film, which he calls [[Lithone]]. Meanwhile, the Dinobots encounter and befriend a young, wild Autobot named [[Wheelie (G1)|Wheelie]] who has been living alone on Quintessa. Together, they crash the trial just as Hot Rod and Kup are fighting losing odds against the Quintessons' [[Sharkticon]]s. The tide is turned, and the Autobots commandeer a [[Quintesson ship]].

The other group of Autobots has landed on the planet [[Junkion (planet)|Junkion]] to make repairs, but are attacked yet again by Galvatron, who was tipped off to their survival by Unicron. During the battle, Ultra Magnus tries to open the Matrix to use its power, but is unable to do so, and instead is killed. Galvatron absconds the Matrix, taking it away to Unicron. The remaining Autobots -- [[Perceptor (G1)|Perceptor]], [[Springer]], [[Arcee (G1)|Arcee]], and [[Spike Witwicky|Spike]]'s son [[Daniel Witwicky|Daniel]] -- are then ambushed by [[Junkion|Junkions]], the eponymous natives of Junkion, who are also giant transforming robots. This battle is cut short, however, by the arrival of Hot Rod's group in their Quintesson ship. After exchanging the [[universal greeting]] they all make friends, and the Junkions restore Ultra Magnus to life. Together, the whole group travels to Cybertron to try to recover the Matrix.

Galvatron attempts to open the Matrix to use its power against Unicron, but is also unable to get it open. Unicron, not pleased with this attempted treachery, shocks Galvatron by transforming from a planet into a [[Scale|planet-sized robot]]. Unicron plucks Galvatron off his chest and swallows him, Matrix and all, and then begins attacking Cybertron itself. [[Shockwave (G1)|Shockwave]] scrambles the Decepticon forces to defend the planet, but they are ineffective against so large an enemy. Shortly the Autobots arrive from Junkion, and fly the Quintesson ship straight through Unicron's eye. This impact destroys the ship, and the Autobots fall out inside Unicron. Hot Rod, separated from the others, eventually runs into Galvatron. During their fight, Hot Rod gets his hands on the Matrix and hears Optimus' voice speak the words, "Arise, Rodimus Prime." Hot Rod grows in stature, adopts a much sterner demeanor into Rodimus Prime, and quickly dispatches Galvatron by tossing him through Unicron's hull out into space. He then opens the Matrix, which fills Unicron with light and begins destroying him.

In the meantime, the other Autobots inside Unicron have located some of their comrades from the moon bases who had been presumed dead, including [[Bumblebee (G1)|Bumblebee]] and Daniel's father, Spike. The Autobots, including Rodimus, escape through Unicron's remaining eye just as he begins to fall apart and explode. The scene then immediately shifts to the surface of Cybertron, where -- for unclear reasons -- the Autobots seem to be in charge again. Rodimus predicts an era of peace and prosperity, and the film closes with a shot of Unicron's severed head still floating in orbit around Cybertron.

==Significance in Transfandom==

''Transformers: The Movie'' remains one of the most important elements of the entire Transformers brand, both within the fiction and from the perspective of the brand's popularity and "mindshare".

Fictionally, it established several story concepts that have been used repeatedly in the years since 1986, some of which -- such as Unicron and the Matrix -- are now central to the entire Transformers mythos. The movie is also the centerpiece of the most well-known Transformers continuity: the G1 animated universe. The G1 cartoon is split into "pre-movie" and "post-movie" sections which feature differenct characters and settings, and even somewhat different visual styles. (Most pre-movie episodes were animated by the studio [[Toei]], while most post-movie episodes were animated by [[AKOM]].)

To an entire generation of young fans, the movie was the most visually spectacular and narratively epic Transformers experience of their entire youth. Events such as the death of Optimus Prime are widely reported to have reduced many kids to tears. It is hardly a surprise that these emotional experiences embedded themselves deeply in many fans' memories.

This is not all to say that the movie is a "masterpiece", exactly. The film displays an arguably cynical attitude towards itself as a vehicle for advertising toys, especially in the way beloved characters are killed -- sometimes gratuitously -- for sake of justifying the story's focus on a new group of toys. Further, the two primary plot devices -- [[Unicron]] and the [[Matrix]] -- have no prior establishment in the fiction. Unicron is given no backstory or justification; he simply exists, and is very dangerous, and is afraid of the Matrix, all for no adequately explained reason. The introduction of the Matrix itself is a heavy [[retcon]]. The story asks the audience to accept that this cosmically-powerful artifact has been in Prime's possession all along (even though an X-ray of Optimus Prime's innards in the Season 2 episode "[[A Prime Problem]]" show absolutely no signs of said Matrix), but has somehow never been relevant before.
Finally, the movie bears many similarities to ''[[Star Wars]]'': There are several character-parallels (Springer is a Han Solo-type and Arcee even has Princess Leia's hairdo!), the primary threat is similar (it's the Death Star... but it transforms!), and both feature a climactic battle where the young hero hears the voice of his wise mentor one last time before saving the day. To be a bit more fair to TF:TM, however, most of these similarities are either superficial (Arcee's Leia-hair) or can be seen as elements common to thousands of years worth of epic storytelling through human history, not just common to ''Star Wars''.

==Trivia and controversies==

This film was one of the last professional performances by [[Orson Welles]], if not the very last. According to production materials shown at [[BotCon 2000]] by Tim Finn, the voice recording sessions for TF:TM were done on September 10 and 11 of 1985. Welles died on October 10 of that same year. It has often been speculated that Unicron's last line ("Destiny... you cannot destroy my destiny...!") was recorded by another actor -- possibly [[Leonard Nimoy|Nimoy]] -- because it sounds different than the other lines. This speculation has been quashed by statements by Transformers voice director [[Wally Burr]].[http://cybertronchronicle.freewebspace.com/60-astrominutes/wally_burr_3.html]

Although the movie was billed in some advertisements before its theatrical release as being "widescreen", the movie was in fact animated in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. It was intended to be matted down in the projector by the projectionist when screened, but all video transfers of the movie were done without mattes, meaning that there is actually more picture visible in the fullscreen video and DVD releases than there would have been in theaters. In November of 2006, a 20th Anniversary edition DVD of the film was released by Sony BMG which included, for the first time, a widescreen version of the film. However, comparison of frames from this new disc and old editions again shows that there is no missing picture on the sides -- the new "wide" version has simply had the top and bottom of the picture cropped off, meaning ''less'' visible picture.{{fact}}

The Dinobot [[Snarl (G1)|Snarl]] is mysteriously absent from almost the entire movie, even though the Dinobots as a group are featured prominently. It is unclear why this is the case, but one possible explanation is that copies of the script which have come into fans' hands repeatedly list the Dinobots but never make mention of Snarl by name. In fact, at one point the script refers to "the four Dinobots". Despite this, Snarl does appear in three very brief shots, although he has no lines and no action.

With the exception of Starscream, Unicron, and possibly Shockwave, only the Autobots suffered casualities in the movie. All of the other "dead" Decepticons from the Autobot City battle were rebuilt into Galvatron's new troops, and although Decepticons were shown taking heavy damage while fighting Unicron, their identities and their condition are uncertain. Additionally, both Starscream and Unicron survived in the post-movie series in some form or another. Shockwave's death in the finished film is highly uncertain, although in the script it is fairly strongly implied. He does make some appearances in crowd shots in later cartoon episodes, but these may be examples of the fairly common animation errors in those episodes.

There exists more than one English-language version of the film, with the following differences in content from the American theatrical run:

* In some versions (notably the European version) the opening credits are replaced with a scrolling text ("Star Wars style") which provides backstory.

* In some versions (notably the European version) the film ends with a narrator reassuring the audience that Optimus Prime will return.

* Instances of swearing in the film (there are two) were edited out; sometimes one, sometimes both. Those instances are: Spike yelling, "Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?" after the self-destructing Moon Base 2 fails to scratch Unicron, and Ultra Magnus growling, "Open, damn it, open!" while trying to open the Matrix to fend off Galvatron and the Sweeps on Junkion. The UK cinema version had the swearing included but when it was released on VHS in the UK Spike's line was cut. However it has been restored on all UK DVD releases.

*Instead of DEG the Rank Film "gong man" appears before the film starts as Rank were the UK distributors.

Though most likely coincidental, the movie bears many similarities to the Marvel Comics Fantastic Four miniseries "The Galactus Trilogy":

* The presence of an enormous world-devouring cosmic entity that threatens to destroy the heroes' home planet (Galactus/Unicron).

* The presence of a single item that is the only thing that can stop said cosmic entitiy (The Ultimate Nullifier/The Matrix of Leadership).

* The presence of a herald of said cosmic entity, who ultimately betrays the entity (The Silver Surfer/Galvatron).

Originally, Ultra Magnus' "death sequence" on Junkion called for him to be lassoed and drawn and quartered by the Sweeps' energy beams, but this was deemed too graphic for audiences, hence the less disturbing "shot to death" sequence seen instead. There is evidence that the original sequence had been fully animated when the decision was made, however; the Sweeps still kept their solid energy lassos when they fire upon Mags, and Mags is seen visibly straining against what appears to be said lassos (edited out and replaced with laser fire) before exploding.

There's a few notable animation errors in the movie:

* When Ultra Magnus accepts the Matrix, he's seen inserting it into his chest twice. (Some fans have joked that Mags was forcing the Matrix inside him, as another sign that it had chosen Hot Rod as the new leader and rejected him.)

* Swoop's lower leg appears in Autobot City far ahead of the Dinobot for a brief second.

* Not so much an error, but if you watch Sludge when he's haymaker'ed by Devastator, his eyes pop out of their sockets in Looney Tunes fashion.

* When [[Soundwave (G1)|Soundwave]] sends [[Rumble (G1)|out]] [[Ratbat|his]] [[Frenzy (G1)|casette]] [[Ravage (G1)|troops]], [[FIBRIR|Rumble is the same color as Frenzy]].

Released on Scotti Bros. Records, the soundtrack to the movie was made available in both vinyl LP (long-playing) record form and audio cassette. At an undetermined point in the 90's, it was released on CD as well (there are no new markings on the CD booklet or outer case to indicate when the CD was released).

In 1997, the newly-formed [[3H]] produced as a [[BotCon 1997]] [[exclusive]] a double-CD set called ''[['Til All Are One (CD)|'Til All Are One]]''. The second disc contains the all of the background score (by Vince DiCola) that was not on the original soundtrack, including several "alternate" pieces for scenes that used songs from the original soundtrack, plus "[[Legacy]]", the audition piece that got Vince the job. Other albums released by 3H which include music from the movie are ''BotCon 97: The Concert'', ''The Protoform Sessions'', ''Artistic Transformations'', and ''Lighting Their Darkest Hour: The Complete Music Score''. All of these 3H albums are long since sold out.

On May 29, 2007, Legacy Recordings re-released the soundtrack in a 20th Anniversary Edition containing the above tracks from the original 1986 release plus these additional tracks:
