Galvatron

:Galvatron is a Decepticon in the Generation 1 continuity family.

Galvatron is a force of nature. Born from the machinations of Unicron himself, Galvatron is the conflation of madness and power, given form. He is blind to all but, his lust for power, his whims and desires at the mercy of the moment. Not even his own subordinates are safe. Though he is not beyond the capacity for long-term goals, it is his unpredictability and his casual disregard for any and all life that strikes such horror in friend and foe alike.

Galvatron was once Megatron, but reborn from his death throes in a Faustian pact with Unicron. Despite retaining the memories, spark and consciousness of Megatron, the near-death experience and massive physical upgrade led to a degree of alteration in personality, something further affected by his now-questionable sanity.

In 2005, after being mortally wounded by Optimus Prime during the Battle of Autobot City, Megatron was left to float aimlessly through space. He was summoned by Unicron, who offered him a new body, a warship and new troops to command, so long as he destroyed the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. Megatron reluctantly accepted and was upgraded into Galvatron, a more fearsome and powerful warrior.

Galvatron quickly retook command of the Decepticons after killing the traitorous Starscream in the middle of his coronation as the Decepticons' new leader. He then went to Earth and attacked Autobot City, full-force. Ultra Magnus lead him away from Earth and Galvatron chased him to the Planet of Junk, where he defeated Magnus and took the Matrix, intending to use it against Unicron.

Galvatron could not open the Matrix, however, and as punishment for his treachery, Unicron swallowed him whole. Inside Unicron's belly, he met up with Hot Rod. Though he initially suggested an alliance with the young Autobot against the mutual threat of his master, the Chaos Bringer mentally tortured Galvatron for his attempted treachery and then forced him to attack Hot Rod. Hot Rod eventually managed to wrest the Matrix away from Galvatron and open it, leading to his transformation into Rodimus Prime. Flush with new power, Rodimus hurled Galvatron's from inside Unicron and into deep space. The Transformers: The Movie But that was not the end of Galvatron. The Transformers: The Movie

In the year 2006 (or 2010, if you're Japanese), Cyclonus and Scourge set out to find their lost leader and return the Decepticons to glory. They found him sunk in a lava pit on the distant planet Thrull and managed to free him. However, the effects of the "plasma bath" irrevocably altered Galvatron's sanity chips, rendering him omnicidally insane. Upon regaining his freedom he thrashed Cyclonus and Scourge and sundered Thrull. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2

Galvatron led the Decepticons on many wacky adventures against the Autobots, though usually botching it in the end due to his craziness (he loved shooting his own troops). At one point, his derangement became so severe, the perpetually loyal Cyclonus was left little choice but to dupe Galvatron into taking therapy sessions (albeit, by force) on Torkulon, the therapy-planet. After nearly murdering a attendant during a word-association session, and somehow building a gun in an arts and crafts class, Galvatron was deemed incurable by conventional methods. The doctors attempted to use living extensions of the planet to give him a lobotomy (much to Cyclonus' disapproval), but Galvatron broke free and murdered the sentient organic core of the planet. After that, he razed the entire planet's civilization, leaving them so broken it would take centuries to rebuild. Webworld

However, despite his insanity, he teamed-up with the resurrected Optimus Prime to stop the Hate Plague. He wound-up becoming infected by the plague and attempted to kill an unconscious Optimus Prime with a axe. Optimus woke up just in the nick of time and opened the Matrix directly in Galvatron's face. The wisdom of the Matrix not only cured the Universe of the Hate Plague, but cured Galvatron of his madness, as well. Grateful, Galvatron sanely declared "There will be no war today, Optimus. You have earned Galvatron's respect" and called a brief truce. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2

Later, Galvatron called the truce off and led an assault on Autobot City, searching for the Key to the Plasma Energy Chamber. Although seemingly lucid during this story-arc, it was perhaps his most genocidal and unbalanced plan ever - having converted Cybertron into a galactic dreadnaught, Galvatron maneuvered it into Earth's orbit, and planned to release the Plasma Energy Chamber's payload into Earth's sun Sol. The resulting supernova would wipe both Earth and Cybertron off the face of the galaxy, presumably leaving Galvatron to gain mastery over everything left. Grudgingly teamed with the Transformer-Nebulan hybrid, Lord Zarak, Galvatron was eventually defeated and sent tumbling through space, ushering Cybertron into a new Golden Age. After regaining control, Galvatron vowed to collect energy from disparate corners of the galaxy and return to Cybertron - "we shall attack other planets, we shall suck them dry! We shall build a planet a hundred times more powerful than Cybertron and I shall rule the galaxy!" - though Scorponok made it clear he questioned his leadership. The Rebirth, Part 3
Kiss Players (Japan-only)
At the end of the Unicron War of 2005, Rodimus Prime hurled Galvatron out of Unicron and into space. The Decepticon leader crash-landed on the planet Earth, obliterating the city of Tokyo. This catastrophic incident soured human-Transformer relations and led to the formation of the Earth Defense Command, a governmental organization created to drive Transformers from the face of the planet.

Galvatron's Unicron-twisted cells, dispersed by the collision, spread throughout Earth's atmosphere. Born from these cells were the Legion, an army of savage and vicious Transformers. Appearing all over the planet, the Legion quickly converged on the site of the impact, the crater upon which the headquarters of the E.D.C. had been constructed. Kiss Players (fiction)
As Hot Rod and Star Convoy prepared to battle Ultra Megatron and Dark Nova, a massive blast suddenly rained down through a Transwarp wormhole overhead. Badly damaged, Hot Rod could barely warn his commander as the maddened Galvatron descended through the portal.

Tearing the right arm off of Hot Rod's fragile companion, the mobile computer Teletraan 15, Galvatron gripped the limb in his teeth as he maniacally throttled the much smaller Autobot.

Waking up some time later with the outcome of the battle unknown, Teletraan 15 remained haunted by images of the crazed Decepticon clutching her limp and helpless friend. Teletraan Go! Go!
The Transformer manga (Japan-only)
Galvatron appeared regularly throughout the manga supplementing Transformers 2010 (Season 3), which acted as a supplement to the animated shows. Some of his devious schemes from the manga included creating a clone army of Megatrons, dubbed the Megatron Military, and forcing a human scientist named Dalton to create weapons of destruction for him. He even fought alongside his nemesis Rodimus Prime against Guiltor, a strange fusion of Optimus Prime and Megatron that threatened to destroy both leaders.
In 2011, Galvatron reactivated the Decepticon Space Bridge on Cybertron and began a sneak-attack on the Autobots. He intended to hack into Vector Sigma, though was thwarted just in time. The battle did result in yet another death for Optimus Prime.A Dream is Born, Double Prime
Galvatron was thought dead for some time, until he returned alive and well a few months later.Return of the Immortal Emperor He retook command of the Decepticons and enacted a new devious plot. Galvatron intended to transform Earth into his new Unicron-like body dubbed "Grand Galvatron", making him all-powerful. He told this news only to his most trusted warrior, Sixshot, and also delivered the news that he intended to sacrifice all the Decepticons for parts to build the body. Not a good idea, as Sixshot betrayed him to Scorponok and Galvatron was left all alone to Battle the Autobot Headmasters in the North Pole. Galvatron was defeated by the "Head-Formation of Friendship" and buried alive deep within an iceberg, killing him.The Emperor of Destruction Vanishes on an Iceberg
During a massive brawl between the Autobot and Decepticon combiners, Megatron took the upper-hand. To counter this, Optimus Prime ordered Metroplex to enter the fray. Metroplex rolled onto the scene and towered over his enemies, with City Commander Ultra Magnus in tow. Not to be outdone, Megatron ordered his own City Commander to enter battle. Beaming down from the sky on a ball of light, the silent and menacing Galvatron stormed the battle. Transforming into cannon mode, Galvatron fired a blast of energy at Ultra Magnus, who quickly transformed to robot mode and engaged his foe in hand-to-hand combat. As the fight seemed evenly matched, City Commander Galvatron's city finally arrived to tip the odds: Trypticon!Scramble City (toy OVA)
(Events from the UK-only comics are in italics.)

There were multiple Galvatrons from various alternate futures who often time-jumped to give the Autobots trouble. There are between 2 and 5 different Galvatrons; the exact number remaining inconclusive.

Galvatron I
After being scolded by Unicron in 2006, Galvatron was ordered to attack Earth and destroy the Matrix. He ordered "Decepticons, to Earth!", but what he REALLY meant was Earth... 1986!

Time-jumping from the year 2006, and freeing himself from Unicron's control, Galvatron intended to create a device that would be powerful enough to destroy Unicron in 2006. Galvatron brought Cyclonus and Scourge with himself, and as an effect of time-travel, replaced three Autobots (Prowl, Ratchet, and Optimus Prime) in the time line. Galvatron began construction of a massive laser cannon which he would then hide on Earth and unleash on an unsuspecting Unicron when the time was right.

The Autobots and Decepticons weren't having none of that and briefly formed an alliance to stop the three Decepticons of the future. The plan wasn't going very well until Hot Rod, Blurr and Kup came back from the future to help. Present-day Ultra Magnus also arrived to help and heroically kept Galvatron occupied as the Autobots and Decepticons set-up a trap.

Galvatron mopped the floor with Ultra Magnus and returned to his laser cannon. He then ran into what he thought was Starscream (but, in fact, was an unconscious Skywarp in disguise), and in a fit of anger, blew him up. After a second he realized that if he destroyed Starscream in the past, how could he have destroyed him in the future? Figuring that he was in an alternate past, and thus, no action taken then would effect his future, Galvatron and his troops returned to their proper time. The Autobots and Decepticons subsequently destroyed the laser cannon and called off the truce.

Sometime later Galvatron returned from the future again following the destruction of Unicron. This time he planned to stay in the past. He intended to siphon the power of a volcano to become a God. Thanks to Ultra Magnus this plan was thwarted and the two of them became trapped under molten lava.

Galvatron eventually escaped and planned to take control of the Decepticons away from Shockwave. This prompted Shockwave to concoct a plan to use Megatron as a weapon against Galvatron.

Galvatron’s time traveling (along with that of the other Autobots and Decepticons) eventually caused a rift in time and space that threatened both the present and the future.

Shockwave unleashed a brainwashed Megatron on Galvatron. Ultimately Megatron and Galvatron forged an alliance after finding common ground and launched an assault against the combined forces of the present day Autobot and Decepticons, the future Autobots and Decepticons and the Wreckers and Mayhem Attack Squad.

By this stage Galvatron was consumed by madness and was able to overcome all resistance. He was only stopped when the time rift ripped him apart and destroyed him.
Other versions of Galvatron
*In an alternate future, a geriatric Rodimus Prime recounted tales of his exploits to a curious youth from his death bed. He said that the Time Wars had changed the timeline so that Galvatron never went back in time - and had conquered Cybertron instead. He was last seen in a flashback to Unicron's third coming in the year 2010 (of that timeline). Aspects of Evil!

*In the Earthforce timeline, a Galvatron claiming to be a different Galvatron to the original one snuck into the Autobot crypt and implanted devices that would read the memories of various dead Autobots. He accidentally revived them from the dead, and Wheeljack was able to imprison him in a "sleep mode". Within this sleep mode, Galvatron was forced to forever relive his worst nightmare (being dismembered by Rodimus Prime) over and over and over again... Perchance to Dream It is unknown if this is meant to be Galvatron II, the Aspects of Evil Galvatron or a whole new version.
IDW Comics
:(Important Note: Uniquely, the IDWverse Galvatron is a completely, totally, honestly, (no kidding) entirely separate character from Megatron, and actually predates him.)

Galvatron was a crew member on the first Ark, launched during Cybertron's Golden Age. However, he and the ship were lost in an anomaly in the Benzuli Expanse, and he then became the herald for whatever dark master existed in what he referred to as the Dead Universe. Galvatron asserts that he himself is now dead, whatever that will turn out to mean. He has incredible self-repair capabilities, recovering almost immediately after Sideswipe blew off part of his head. Returning to Cybertron soon after Thunderwing's resurrection and defeat, Galvatron succeeded in seizing the huge Pretender's remains. While on that mission, he crushed Leadfoot with his bare hands!

Dreamwave Armada comic
An alternate version of Galvatron appears briefly as one of Unicron's heralds, along with Thunderwing, Bludgeon, Dirge, and Scourge. He rather impassively states that he has killed "many" Megatrons in other alternate realities, however he is ultimately destroyed by this timeline's native Megatron with the power of the Dark Saber.

Controversy over identity
Well, they were the same guy.
Some fans believe Galvatron is a psychologically distinct and discontinuous entity from Megatron, almost, or equally, as much as Scourge and Cyclonus who demonstrate no continuity of memory or personality to their former Decepticon selves. This remains a topic of heated debate in some circles, in spite of a fairly unambiguous canon.

Generation 1 cartoon
In the G1 animated continuity, Galvatron evidently still self-identifies as being the same person as Megatron, albeit with greater power and a new name. Although not making a point of revealing this former identity to his troops at large (perhaps to cast off the potential stigma of being a "defeated"/successfully deposed leader), Galvatron makes his sense of self clear when Starscream asks "Megatron? Is that you?", to which he replies "Here's a hint" before obliterating him. Later in The Transformers: The Movie when Galvatron is poised to crush Hot Rod's neck, he boasts: "First Prime, then Ultra Magnus, and now you. It's a pity you Autobots die so easily, or I might have a sense of satisfaction." Again, Galvatron is obviously speaking with no sense of discontinuity of identity or personality as he refers to past and current acts as both Megatron and Galvatron without qualification or distinction.

While some might contrast this statement, however, with his earlier line, "I shall crush you, just as Megatron crushed Prime,", interpreting that such a statement implies a disconnect from his former life, this too can easily be explained by Galvatron's apparent reluctance to allow his troops know that he used to be Megatron. While Galvatron would have fully expected the knowledge imparted in the later statement to Hot Rod to die with the callow youth, the declaration to Ultra Magnus was made in public, with his troops (and, potentially, other Autobots in earshot) present.

During season three, however, Galvatron made little or no further references to his past life as Megatron, though this could be a side effect of lying in a pool of lava for several months and his increasing insanity. Upon meeting the resurrected Optimus Prime in The Return of Optimus Prime, Galvatron behaved as though simply picking up where he left off with his old nemesis from his Megatron days, as did Prime, saying that he knew him "all too well", indicating that the Autobot leader was capable of recognising his former adversary despite the change in name and appearance. Furthermore, in Five Faces of Darkness, Astrotrain states that Megatron and Galvatron are "the same guy," implying that during Galvatron's absence, the other Decepticons (or, at the very least, Astrotrain) figured out what was going on.

And yet despite all that, a memorial of Megatron can be seen prominantly in the Decepticon Crypt, implying that the Decepticons who built it considered Megatron to be dead. This could possibly be explained that the Decepticons built the marker before Galvatron returned and seized command, though their window of opportunity to build the thing was rather slim. Starscream's Ghost

Japanese fiction
Early advertisements for the Galvatron toy presented the character as an all-together separate being from Megatron, and in some cases, even being Megatron's underling. The second Scramble City OVA was a remake of the original animated version, albeit including the Galvatron toy for promotion. Galvatron appears to fight his nemesis, Ultra Magnus, as Megatron barks orders from the background. This is likely due to Takara wishing to advertise the toy as quickly as possible, without full knowledge of the character's history. To maintain Galvatron's mystique, he was given the function of "City Commander", with no indication that he was an upgraded Megatron. Continuing this trend of unintentional disassociation, very early promotional artwork featured in TV Magazine and Comics Bom Bom also presented Galvatron as a separate character.

However, this era was very short-lived. In all official Japanese fiction, including the manga and the Japanese-exclusive cartoons, Galvatron is locked in as an upgrade of Megatron.

A good example would be the Battlestars series. Upon being resurrected and further upgraded, Galvatron reverted to the name Megatron once more (as Super Megatron).

Marvel Comics
In the US and UK Marvel comics the various time-hopping Galvatrons all demonstrate an awareness of having previously been Megatron with no strong indicators of a break in psychological identification. Indeed, at one point, a Galvatron said outright, "Like Megatron? No - I AM Megatron!" The closest that these Galvatrons came to identity crisis were incidents in which a time-displaced Galvatron was confronted by Megatrons (or copies thereof) and did battle with his former self. Although in these instances Galvatron experiences trains of thought that suggest he sees Megatron as a separate being and/or the source of his madness that needs to be destroyed, it should be noted that these are not the musings of a calm, rational mind. In these instances Galvatron is in the grips of a psychotic episode, which he generally snaps out of by realising that he is indeed the same person.

A possible explanation for why (any version of) Galvatron retains psychological continuity with Megatron while his fellow Unicron-creations do not may be that Thundercracker et al were apparently already dead or in total stasis-lock at the time of their reformatting, and thus it is widely speculated that only their bodies were used to create Cyclonus and company. Whether this indicates that they retained their sparks and merely suffered total mind-wipes (either as the result of recent death or by Unicron's doing), or if Unicron actually infused their reformatted bodies with new life-forces is unknown. (On the other hand, none of the other Unicron-created Decepticons have faced their past selves or deeds the way Galvatron has.) Megatron, by comparison, was clearly alive and awake at the time of his reformatting and struck a bargain with Unicron for "a new body", a deal which implies that his mind would remain his own.
* Galvatron (Decepticon, 1986/1987)
: Japanese ID number: D-62

: Galvatron transforms into a Cybertronic treaded field artillery unit, with an alternate hand-held gun mode. Using a 9-volt battery, he has a light-up cannon in gun mode, light-up eyes in robot mode, and variable electronic warbly noises in any mode. Galvatron is notable in being one of the most well-articulated toys in the Generation 1 line, with ratcheting shoulders and hips, as well as swivel waist, elbows, mid-biceps, knees, and ankle joints. He was also armed with a small black laser rifle.

: Japanese ID number: D-62-S

: The original Galvatron toy was much later redecoed and re-released by Takara into a sort-of more show-like appearance, being primarily purple instead of gray. His face mold was also slightly retooled, and he was given new sound effects, including speech clips (in Japanese, naturally). He also came with a Matrix on a chain to be worn around his neck as in the movie. It also uses two AA batteries, rather than the previous 9-volt.

: This toy was later released as the e-Hobby-exclusive Galvatron II.

Titanium Series
*Galvatron (3-inch Robot Masters, 2006)
: Titanium Galvatron is a 3 inch tall, non-transforming, die-cast metal figurine. He is based heavily on his cartoon model and has articulation in his neck, waist, shoulders and wrists. His orange cannon is also removable from his arm.

Merchandise
*The exclusive toy for BotCon Japan 1997 was a non-transforming 8" vinyl figure of Galvatron styled after his Studio OX modifed animation model. The only Super Hybrid Model ever officially released, this Galvatron was initially available in two versions: "standard" purple, and a translucent orange "lava bath" version limited to 100 pieces. In subsequent years at least two more versions of this figure would be released for online sale--one that replaced the orange paint on the cannon barrel with an orange molded plastic piece, and another that replaced the entire purple body coloration with royal blue. The figures have articulation comparable with Metalforce statue of Optimus Prime, with useful swivel joints at the neck and shoulders, less useful swivels sideways at the biceps and knees, and a rather useless "shrugging action" in the waist.

* Galvatron was part of the second "Act" of Takara's Super Collection Figure, a soft-plastic PVC of his cartoon model in both full-color and all-clear plastics, one each per case of twelve. A metallic painted version of this figure was one of the chase items in act 6. The SCF Galvatron was later released as part of the Heroes of Cybertron series, cast entirely in clear-red plastic then painted over (giving it a light-piped-like glowing eye effect). He was only available in the third wave of the line.

* MyClone Galvatron: standard and lava "chase" versions.

* 3" Titanium Galvatron.

Trivia
*A Galvatron Action Master was planned at one point, but apparently went no further than a concept sketch. It is only vaguely similar to Galvatron's normal appearance and may possibly have been a "powered up" Galvatron of some sort.

* A triple changer was proposed which would switch between a very awkward Galvatron, Megatron, and a Walther P-38 handgun with added futuristic silencer and laser sight. It is notable that the strange "Reverse Megatron" design has a mild resemblance to the also unproduced Galvatron Action Master, especially in the chest design.

*Galvatron's toy bio was apparently written with the intention of him being a new character who coexisted with Megatron: he has a rank of 9 and the function "City Commander," with no mention of him having once been Megatron. Given the omission of similar details from Rodimus Prime's bio, it is likely that this was done to avoid spoiling the surprise of Galvatron's origin in the movie.

*The Galvatron toy's gun mode's only fictional appearances were in the UK comics, which featured it as a shrunken, human-scaled weapon, and a form that he assumed merely so that he could easily be conveyed by other parties, but never wielded as a weapon.

*Galvatron's toy bio states that his cannon is a "laser which emits chemically-produced direct-current electricity". While this is a rather strange thing for a laser to do, it is a neat pun on his name. A galvanic cell, named after Luigi Galvani, is a certain type of chemical voltage source. Though Galvatron's toy's batteries are not galvanic cells, they do produce DC electricity chemically, making his toy one of the more fiction-accurate in the Generation 1 line.

*Bizarrely, Unicron would appear to have based Galvatron on a schoolboy's wristwatch.

*When asked about Galvatron's design in an interview, Floro Dery's reply was, "But about Galvatron, my inspiration for him are those 'stupid people'." ...Ooookay.

*Just as Megatron's fusion cannon was sometimes shown in commercials to have a handle, Galvatron's cannon had a trigger on at least one occasion (during The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2). Galvatron apparently doesn't need to use the trigger, however.
A translation of two official Japanese timelines for the events of the Generation 1 animated universe, incorporating the original Japanese series, Generation 2, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, Micromaster Collection, Robot Masters, Binaltech, Binaltech Asterisk, Kiss Players continuities and more. Along with linking existing events from these series the timelines also recorded several new events and retconed several others to make all the material fit (roughly) together.
15,000,000,000 years ago
* The Big Bang. The universe is born through the power of Zodiac.

12,000,000,000 years ago
* The galaxy is born. The alien scientist Primacron is born.

* Primacron creates a sentient, planet-sized robot life form called Unicron that feeds on mechanical planets and robot life forms, but it rebels against him. Primacron is injured. Primacron's Assistant, Oracle, flees.

* Oracle reaches a desolate planet in the center of the galaxy and changes it into a verdant world.

* Oracle senses that in the far future, Primacron will create Tornadron, which can absorb all energy. Oracle summons Grimlock and other beast Transformers from the future to tell them how to destroy the threat.

:(Note: In its original English and Japanese versions, the events of this episode do not suggest any time travel to have occurred, but the new merged Japanese timeline retconned it in to prevent a conflict with the new idea that the Oracle has become Vector Sigma by the modern day.)

* The Quintessons immigrate to Oracle's green planet. They obtain Oracle's shell, the Matrix. Oracle, who has the ability to give robots life, is turned into the ultra computer Vector Sigma. His safety key has the power to make organic life into machines, and is used by the Quintessons to transform his world into the machine planet Cybertron.

* The Quintessons attempt to create Trans-Organics as a fusion between robotic and organic life, but fail and seal them up deep within the planet.

* The Quintessons mass-produce civilian and military robot life forms, the ancestors of the Autobots and Decepticons, as slaves. The first of these is named A-3.

11 million years ago
* The intelligent robots of Cybertron develop emotions and revolt, with A-3 as their leader. They chase the Quintessons from the planet. The Golden Age of Cybertron arrives.

* The military Decepticons (who desire dictatorship) and civilian Autobots (who are against it) war against each other.

* The Autobots, who lack combat capabilities, are massacred. Many flee their home planet.

* The Matrix is passed on as a symbol of Autobot leadership. The holders' memory and wisdom are collected within it.

* In order to fight the Decepticons, the Autobots develop the technology to transform their bodies. However, several centuries later, the Decepticons gain the same technology. This is the birth of the Transformers.

* The scientists Starscream and Jetfire visit Earth for research purposes. Skyfire crashes into the Arctic and goes missing.

9 million years ago
* Deep within Cybertron, the Emperor of Destruction Megatron is created and becomes leader of the Decepticons.

* Megatron kills the Autobot leader. The Matrix is guarded by the elder Alpha Trion (formerly A-3).

* Cargo hauler Orion Pax is badly injured by Megatron and, through Alpha Trion's aid, is reborn as Commander Optimus Prime, bearer of the Matrix.

* War breaks out between Megatron's Decepticons and Prime's Autobots.

* Megatron uses the brainwashing machine Robo-Smasher to bolster his ranks. Its victims include the Constructicons and Omega Supreme.

* As the war intensifies, civilians who lack transformation abilities (Seiberdroids) flee, searching for a new home. These include the immigrants to Planet Paradron in the Fourth Great War.

The ancient past
* God Messenger (Devil Z) and Godmaster come to Earth. Godmaster breaks into 8 pieces and falls into a deep sleep.

* The independent Decepticon team called the Insecticons arrives on Earth and decides to live there permanently, using food and elements as their fuel.

4 million years ago
* A group of Transformers led by Fortress escape Cybertron in search of a new haven. They travel to the desolate planet Master.

* The starship Fortress Maximus, which has been traveling through time, crashes on planet Master. Fortress uses it to refine his Headmaster theory and builds the massive Battleship Maximus.

* The resources on Cybertron dry up. An Autobot space exploration team aboard the Ark led by Optimus Prime and their Decepticon pursuers aboard the Nemesis, led by Megatron, are pulled in by the planet Earth's gravity and crash. The Transformers enter a long period of stasis lock.

3 million years ago
* Next-generation Autobots and Decepticons (Maximals and Predacons) come from the future via Transwarp and scan the animals of the planet in order to transform into them. The Beast Wars begin.

* The immortal life force of Starscream, who died in the future of 2005, crosses time and space to reach Earth. He possesses a Predacon and attempts to take over, but fails. He returns to being a ghost and vanishes into the far reaches of time and space.

* Autobots and Decepticons traverse dimensions and battle the Beast Warriors.

:(Note: While the factions are traditionally called 'Cybertrons' and 'Destrons' in Japan, these dimensional travelers are explicitly identified as Autobots and Decepticons, names that have only been used in Japan for the 2007 movie. The reference is to a toy-only story involving the movie characters (represented by the Japanese releases of the Fast Action Battlers visiting prehistoric Earth and interacting with the Beast Wars characters.)

* A dimensional fissure, the Blasty Zone, forms. Optimus Primal and the Predacon Megatron are transported to the year 2004.

* Due to the Maximals' and Predacons' interference in the Vok experiment on Earth, the Vok begin to terraform the planet. Optimus Primal sacrifices his life to stop this. As a result, Earth loses its second, mechanical moon, and the Quantum Surge is generated.

* Humanity's ancestors are born. The Maximals assist in their evolution.

* Ravage is sent from the future to kill everyone. He captures the Predacon Megatron, but fails in his mission and is destroyed.

* In the volcano later to be known as Mount St. Hilary, the Predacon Megatron unearths the Ark and attacks the original Optimus Prime in an attempt to change history. As a result, a Time Storm occurs, but Optimus Primal stops it.
Several million years ago
* The Sparkbots travel back from 2007 and attempt to release Unicron's Angolmois energy, which was scattered in 2005. They are followed by Primus (a.k.a. Oracle), who seals them and the energy inside the Earth. He creates Fortress Maximus (RID) to stand guard and devises several layers of safeguards to control Maximus' activation.

500,000 years ago
* The Decepticon Deathsaurus uses a giant fortress in his quest to become the next Emperor, but the young Autobot Star Saber and others seal it up in the gravity well of the Dark Nebula.

Several thousand years ago
* The Stone Age.

* The Headmaster Grand of Planet Master meets up with the Autobot Pretenders. After a battle with the Decepticon Pretenders, they crash on Earth and take the form of humans. They seal up the Decepticon Pretenders, who have taken the form of demons, in a pyramid in Egypt, the Nasca Lines in Peru, and the undersea city of Atlantis.

* A team of Autobots from the future come to Earth to activate Fortress Maximus, but their spaceship crashes on Angel Mountain. Later, this becomes the basis for human legends of U.F.O.s.

* The energy life form Devil Z steals the Powermasters' Transtectors from the G Nebula and brings them to Earth. He falls into a deep sleep. Among the Transtectors he has stolen is one created for Optimus Prime.

:(Note: The above point contradicts the earlier account of Devil Z as the "God Messenger" and the Godmasters originating as a singular being known as "Godmaster." The earlier account is the one used in the animated series itself, but was later apparently retconned, replaced with the version of the story noted here. This version appeared in the later timeline and may be assumed to take precedence in canon.)

543
* A human from the future year of 1985 and several Autobots and Decepticons including Starscream arrive through a time-space transportation system left in an ancient ruin on Earth. They are drawn into a territorial battle, but with the assistance of an old man claiming to be a wizard, they return to their original era.

14th Century
* Humanity unearths a spaceship that crashed on Earth several million years before, and discovers a Cybertronian weather control unit called the Power Core. The Power Core's activation causes a great disaster, but the King of Persia seals it inside a golden shell. Renamed the Pearl of Bahoudin ("Jehudin" in Japan), it is buried in the ground once more.

Early 1980s
* The Great War on Cybertron settles down. A team of Seiberdroids comes from Cybertron to look for Optimus Prime or the Matrix that he holds. A dimensional shockwave causes them to gain transformation abilities as Micromasters and travel to Earth. As a side effect of the shockwave, some become Decepticons.

* The divided Micromasters begin a conflict on Earth. The Autobots unearth a fragment of Cybertronian metal and a Predacon emblem in Mount St. Hilary. They set up Metrobase to protect the site.

* The Autobot Micromasters find a pod in the ground. A plasma released from the pod opens a dimensional rift and Multiforce arrives from the future.

:(Note: No further explanation as to what happened to the Micromasters and Multiforce afterwards is provided.)

1985
* The eruption of Mount St. Hilary activates Teletraan I after 4 million years. Teletraan I awakens and repairs the sleeping Autobots and Decepticons, making them resemble the machines of Earth. The restored Megatron leads his forces to concentrate energy and send it back to their homeworld. Optimus Prime opposes this, and a conflict arises, sweeping humans into the battle.

* The Decepticon Air Commander Starscream unearths his old friend Skyfire from the polar ice. Even as Skyfire is reborn, they come into conflict and Skyfire joins the Autobots.

* Megatron makes a deal with the human scientist Doctor Arkeville and uses the hypno-chip that Arkeville has developed to brainwash and enslave many humans. Megatron uses them to construct a large Space Bridge and pulls Cybertron into Earth orbit. The gravitational pull causes major disasters on Earth, but he is stopped by Optimus Prime and the Autobots.

* Doctor Fujiyama (Dr. Hamada in Japan) creates the robot Nightbird. Due to Decepticon tampering, she goes berserk and is sealed up, but is considered a major step in the history of Earth-made robots.

* Starscream manipulates a time and space transportation system left in an ancient ruin on Earth and is transported to Europe in the year 543. He returns along with the Autobots who followed him.

* In order to bolster the ranks of the outnumbered Autobots, Alpha Trion becomes the activation key for Vector Sigma and merges with it.

* The Autobot Aerialbots, created by Vector Sigma, are transported by Decepticon Defense Commander Shockwave's time machine to the Cybertron of 9 million years before. There, they assist in the birth of Optimus Prime and return.

* Three American students create the robot B.O.T.. Because they used the Personality Component of the Decepticon Brawl, it goes berserk.

* Megatron tampers with the Golden Disk aboard the planetary exploration machine Voyager that was launched in 1977 and gives directions for changing history and destroying Optimus Prime on the Ark in the past if the Decepticons lose the war in the future.

Latter 1980s
* The Scramble City plan is activated through cooperation between Autobots and humans. The giant city robot Metroplex is completed. The Decepticons build Trypticon.

Early 1990s
* In the United States of America, an expert team including D.R. Faireborn is formed to combat a massive international terrorist organization led by the man who would later be known as Snake.

* The Chinese restaurant run by Shaoshao Li's parents moves to New York. Shaoshao spends many lonely days there until she meets the young Marissa Faireborn.

1996
* During one of D.R. Faireborn's missions, he and his daughter Marissa are saved by Optimus Prime. From then onwards, Marissa is increasingly involved with Prime and the other Autobots. However, Shaoshao, who feels that her only ally has been taken away from her by Prime, begins to mistrust all Transformers.

* Shaoshao's parents relocate their restaurant to Japan. Shaoshao is forced to leave without ever reaching an understanding with Marissa or Prime.

Latter 1990s
* The U.S. government officially announces their intent to coexist with the Autobots, the existence of Decepticons, and their intention to join in the battle.

* The U.S. army works with the Autobots to develop and produce the military strategy robot C-X. However, Starscream's ghost, which has come from the future, tampers with it. It goes berserk and is destroyed.

* The Japanese government makes a deal with the Decepticons, agreeing to allow them to gather energy in exchange for Japan's safety. However, Frenzy (who took Rumble's place in the Japanese cartoon) causes an artificial earthquake, leading to mass casualties.

* The humans and Autobots work together to develop the interstellar teleportation gate known as the Trigger.

* Starscream fuses with the Trigger. He attempts a coup, but is defeated by Optimus Prime and Megatron. In the battle, many on both sides are badly damaged, and Prime and Megatron go missing.

2000
* An elite team of Predacons (a.k.a. "Destrongers") from the future cross the dimensions to Earth. They attempt to control Fortress Maximus, who was left on Earth several million years before. They are opposed by an Autobot Dimensional Patrol Team from the future, led by Optimus Prime. The Autobots secretly construct a Space Bridge and remain undercover. The Dimensional Patrol Team is made up of new-generation Transformers, including the Spy Changers, who were born from the addition of the Go-Bots.

* The Autobot space ship that had crashed on Angel Mountain several millennia ago is unearthed by the Predacons. Its crew are reformatted into Decepticons.

* The Autobots activate Fortress Maximus. Borrowing Maximus's power, Prime defeats the leader of the Predacons and Decepticons, Galvatron.

2003
* On Earth, with the help of Autobot ambassador Crosscut, construction begins on Autobot City, which uses Fortress Maximus as its core. The Earth Defense Command (E.D.C.) is created with humans and Autobots working together.

* The members of the Autobot Dimensional Patrol Team that remained on Earth sense a new threat and upgrade the Spy Changer team to Super Mode.

* The Autobots sense that Megatron is preparing for a war to take over Cybertron. They prepare by moving most of their forces from Earth to Cybertron.

* Using the Cosmic Rust virus, the Decepticons sabotage the Autobot forces, causing massive damage. The E.D.C., having lost most of their defenses, activate the Binaltech Project, a plan to create man-made Transformers.

2004
* Megatron begins the war to take over Cybertron. The Autobots cannot send reinforcements to Earth. The Binaltech warriors born on Earth are very effective. The E.D.C. and Autobots, working together, remove the Decepticons from the solar system.

* Through an introduction by Dr. Arkeville, the Decepticon Earth Attack Commander Starscream allies with a secret organization, the Concurrence, made up of dangerous elements on Earth. Using advanced brainwashing techniques, they brainwash humans and take over several industrial cities across the world, creating Binaltech Decepticons.

* The Autobots use the element Solitarium to continue construction of Scramble City. They rewrite Fortress Maximus (a.k.a. Cybertron Base)'s central systems accordingly.

* Dimensional fissures called the Blasty Zone appear, and Transformers from various eras are transported to the year 2004. The Predacon Megatron arrives and defeats Starscream, taking over command of the Decepticons on Earth.

* Optimus Prime and the other Autobots on Earth are attacked by the Decepticons led by the Predacon Megatron. Prime remembers having met a future Transformer aboard the Ark 3 million years before. A timestorm occurs, and Optimus Primal is summoned from prehistoric Earth.

* In order to bolster their ranks on Earth, the Autobots develop the GT System, which creates same-personality duplicates. However, its side effects are unknown.

* Under the E.D.C.'s leadership, a replica automaton with artificial intelligence is created in Japan. This is the birth of man-made Transformers.

* In order to find the truth about the "Bad Production Incident" that created the Binaltech Decepticons, an expert team led by D.R. Faireborn works with Autobots including Jazz to enact Operation: Carwash.

* Star Saber and Victory Leo arrive from the future, having pursued the Strong Attack Captain Decepticon Gigant Bomb, who came through the Blasty Zone.

2005
* The remaining members of the disbanded American intelligence agency Triple-I succeed in analyzing the flight recorder of a future Transformer's spaceship, which they had unearthed and safeguarded since the previous century. They discover the future Decepticon Ravage's "Central Consciousness File X-9." Using the life force of the current Ravage, who had been captured by the E.D.C., he is reborn as the Binaltech Ravage. However, sensing that his plan to change history 3 million years before had failed, Ravage once again begins to try to alter the timeline.

* Lio Convoy comes through the Bloody Zone (possibly a typo for Blasty Zone) from a future in which humans are extinct on Earth.

* Ravage repairs Shockwave's Chronosphere time machine. He traps the on-the-verge-of-victory Megatron and the other Decepticon forces around Cybertron between dimensions, their mobile fortress and all. He intends to protect the Decepticons from Unicron's imminent arrival and to allow the Autobots to exhaust themselves battling Unicron. Then the Decepticons will reemerge and reign supreme.

* Ravage from another point in the future makes contact with Teletraan I in order to use the Transformers' "Bio and Tech Spec" data to manipulate the timestream and create a future without needless battles. He is stopped by the humanoid computer Mobile Teletraan 15, who has traveled back in time from 2007. As a result, Teletraan I is damaged and the data is lost.

* In order to regain the lost data, Ravage takes on the identity of "Black Panther Man" and infiltrates the Autobots. He instructs the Teletraan 15 of 2005 to travel to different eras via Transwarp and creates an Information Control Center based on the record satellite Nana.

* Megatron, who has been missing, is reborn as Rebirth Megatron through the black hole connection system possessed by the Reverse Convoy of planet Vehicon.

* The Autobot technician Wheeljack discovers through information gathered from Ravage that in the near future, he and many other Autobots will die in the Unicron War. He sees a way to avoid this fate in the GT System, which makes it possible to replicate personalities. He initiates Operation: Body Shop, creating replicas of himself.

* Injured in the battle over solitarium, Optimus Prime gains the power of the Energon Matrix possessed by the many Prime-type warriors gathered from different eras. He rids Earth of Decepticons. The Autobots use the last of the solitarium to return the time-lost Autobots and the captured Decepticons to their original eras.

* The Interplanetary Personnel Exchange Program, highly praised due to the excellent work of Autobot police officer Clamp Down, is expanded to include Red Alert, Sunstreaker, and other Binaltech Autobots. They attempt to promote peaceful co-existence by partnering with humans and taking on jobs.

* The Autobots attempt to undo the change in history that the Binaltech Ravage caused. Autobot theoretician Skids directs "Operation: Distant Thunder" in an attempt to send a warning to the past. If it succeeds, history will return to normal, but the Autobots will lose to the Decepticons, Cybertron will be conquered by Megatron, and the great darkness of Unicron will arrive.

* Operation: Distant Thunder fails. A mysterious entity called "The Protector" creates a bypass, creating two parallel worlds: one with the true progression of events, and the other with the altered history of the Binaltech Project. The world where the altered history continues will eventually lead to the great Alternity.

* In the world where history flows as it should, Unicron the Great Devourer appears and the Unicron War begins. Optimus Prime dies in battle, the heavily-wounded Megatron is reborn as Galvatron through the power of Unicron, and Starscream is executed by Galvatron.

* The Matrix is passed on to the new Autobot leader, Ultra Magnus, and the young Autobot Hot Rod releases its power, maturing into Rodimus Prime and becoming the Autobots' new leader. He throws Galvatron toward Planet Thrull and lights the darkness, destroying Unicron. But the Angolmois energy within Unicron traverses time and space and parasitizes Autobot leaders from various time periods. Unicron's servants, the Sparkbots, secretly alter Galvatron's trajectory so that he will land on Earth.

* Galvatron crashes on Earth, creating a historically unparalleled disaster and transforming Tokyo into a sea of fire. His cells are scattered, and the Unicron cells within them multiply using humans and machines as their hosts. The machines become Legion and the biological organisms (humans) become Kiss Players.

* Due to the disaster, humans begin to see Transformers as an enemy, with anti-Transformers sentiment centering on Japan. To combat this, key aid groups and Autobots work on rescue operations in Tokyo. Among them is a sentient metallic being who takes on the form of an Autobot to soothe the thirst of the people of Japan.

* Despite the Autobots' best efforts, the Japanese people's anti-Transformers sentiment continues unabated and spreads throughout the world. Eventually, the Tokyo E.D.C. is at the center of a movement to force Transformers off the Earth. There are some who believe that the Concurrence is behind this sudden change in direction, but it is not known for certain.

* The E.D.C. summons Kiss Players from across the country and begins to remove Cybertronians using white artificial Transformers called Autroopers.

* The E.D.C. develops an anti-electron field that greatly lowers the life functions of Cybertronians and covers the planet with it, thus driving all remaining Transformers off the Earth.

* Rodimus Prime, devastated by the thought that his actions caused humanity and Transformers to go to war with each other, returns both the Matrix and the title of Commander to Ultra Magnus and becomes Hot Rod once more.

* Some civilians oppose the unilateral actions of the E.D.C. to remove the Transformers and form a resistance movement. Marissa Faireborn is seen among them.

2006
* "Over-Technology" is used to rebuild the city of Tokyo at a fever pitch.

* In May, just as peace is restored, hordes of an unknown Transformer species called Legion appear. The Legion creatures roam cities and attack a small number of humans, as though there is some special quality that they are looking for.

* To fight the Legion forces, the E.D.C. uses Galvatron's cells to mass-produce black-and-white Autroopers. When fused with Kiss Players, they can fight on equal footing with Legion creatures.

* In June, Atari Hitotonari's parents are killed by Legion.

* Atari is attacked by a Legion and fuses with Shaoshao Li's Ne-04 Autrooper. She shows berserker-type abilities and destroys the Legion. She is identified as a Kiss Player.

* Atari joins the E.D.C. Tokyo Autrooper Team.

With the assistance of a Kiss Player from the resistance, Prime regenerates into a new body and is restored to life.

* Shaoshao Li is held captive in the underground experimentation facility beneath the Tokyo E.D.C. headquarters. A Legion attempts to fuse with her, but she is saved by the sudden appearance of Hot Rod. Hot Rod has a ParasiTech fusion with the Legion, but is reformatted by Shaoshao's Kiss Player abilities. From this day forward, Shaoshao is forced to spend her life fleeing from the E.D.C.

* Prime, Marissa, Hot Rod, Shaoshao and Atari stop the human experimentation being carried out by the E.D.C.'s Commander Amaō and the scattered cells are returned to Galvatron. He is once more sent on a trajectory to land on Thrull. Prime, who has finally awakened from his nightmare, returns to death.

2007
* In the wake of Unicron's destruction, Primacron creates the life form Tornadron, which absorbs all energies. In the distant past, his former assistant Oracle senses this and summons Grimlock and the other beast Transformers, informing them how Tornadron may be destroyed.

* Due to the threat of the Hate Plague, Quintessa is used to restore Optimus Prime to life. He uses the Wisdom of the Ages within the Matrix to cleanse the fear.
2011
* The Headmasters, who have come from planet Master, join both armies.

* The release of the Matrix's energy causes Vector Sigma to destabilize. Optimus Prime sacrifices his life to stop it.

* Partially recharged by the energy of Earth, the Matrix is fully restored by the ghost of Alpha Trion, and Hot Rod becomes Rodimus Prime again.

* The war worsens. Cybertron is destroyed. Rodimus Prime leaves to seek out a new homeworld, and Fortress becomes the new Autobot commander. The planet Mars is destroyed in an explosion.

* The Autobots in space cannot send assistance to Earth due to the worsening battle. Instead, they send the Masterforce System, allowing humans to fuse with Transtectors. However, the humans who have sided with Devil Z use this for evil.

* The human Ginrai, who has fused with the body intended for Optimus Prime, eliminates Devil Z.

2025
* Under the leadership of Star Saber, the Autobots create the Space Peace Union and establish the Space Defense Army to fight the Decepticons. They use Planet V as their base.

* The Decepticon Emperor of Destruction Deathsaurus reactivates his giant fortress and attacks Earth. Victory Saber stops him and destroys the fortress.

* In the far reaches of space, Starscream, Bumblebee, Grimlock and Jazz's battle continues.

After 2025
* Deathsaurus is reborn as the Dark Emperor. He leads all Decepticons in pursuit of the new energy form Energon Z.

* In response, the Autobots follow Dai Atlas's Plan Z to terraform the planet Micro into Planet Z.

* The new Emperor of Destruction, Violen Jygar, appears. His true identity is a fusion of the ghosts of Decepticons who died in battle.

* On Saturn's moon Titan, where a civilization exists that worships robots as gods, Metrotitan is born from within the ground. He assists the Decepticons and performs sabotage activities like blocking transmissions.

* Violen Jygar steals the Super Element Zodiac from Earth and returns to his birthplace, the 10th planet of the solar system. He is destroyed by the new commander Dai Atlas and his warriors. The rainbow of Zodiac, which is the energy of constructing the universe, fills the 10th planet with life.

* Victory Saber pursues the Decepticon Gigant Bomb, breaks through the Bloody Zone, and ends up in the year 2004.

:(Note: This is the second mention of the "Bloody Zone," which from its context appears to be the same as the Blasty Zone. It may be a typo.)

* The Great Emperor Dark Nova, who looks very similar to Unicron, appears. In response, Dai Atlas orders the Battlestars to seek out Optimus Prime's body, which had been stolen by Decepticons.

* Dark Nova revives Galvatron as Super Megatron.

* On the satellite base Lucifer, Optimus Prime is discovered and reborn as Star Convoy using the power of Zodiac.

* Super Megatron evolves into Ultra Megatron, then fuses with Dark Nova to become Star Giant. Star Convoy destroys him from within.

* The new leader of the Decepticons, Scrash, leads Flashwing, Deathplay, Darkfly and Sharp Edge to invade Earth, but is stopped by Sixbuilder and the other new defenders of the Earth.

* Planet Cybertron is revived, but suffers a deadly energy shortage. Optimus Prime becomes a Powermaster, fuses with a Nebulan, and protects himself with a phase modulation shield. He enters a black hole to get the super energy Nucleon.

* Optimus Prime is reborn as an Action Master and creates the Cybertron Union with Megatron, who lost his violence circuits in the previous war. However, Megatron, who has lost his underlings to humans, begins planning to invade Earth once more.

* Optimus Prime and Megatron, who have upgraded to new forms, follow "The Law of Cybertron" and have a one-on-one duel in the 17th District of the Merton Nebula. Prime is defeated and destroyed, but is rebuilt into Battle Convoy by the power of the Matrix. Megatron joins with Dreadwing and others, and a battle begins. In the end, the Autobots triumph and the Decepticons flee to the far reaches of the universe.

* Galvatron II, who has come from a parallel world, threatens the galaxy with his mobile battle fortresses. In response, Laser Ultra Magnus, who was revived by Battle Convoy's Reconfiguration Matrix, establishes a mobile combat team and prepares for battle.

* Battle Convoy equips himself with a new secret weapon and updates himself to a form that resembles his original body. Through a special coating, he gains a "Black Body" to absorb sunlight. He uses his twin special missile launchers and engages Galvatron II in battle.

Approximately 300 years later
* The long war ends with victory by the Autobots, and the Decepticons sign a cease-fire.

* The next-generation Autobots (Maximals) create a clone of Starscream, who has an indestructible spark. They try to use him as an immortal warrior, but fail. This "Protoform X" massacres Colony Omicron and is captured 4 years later.

* The next-generation Megatron steals the Golden Disk, which the Maximals have been safeguarding. With his underlings, he travels to the Earth of 4 million years ago. Optimus Primal and his crew, who have been engaged in deep-space exploration with the captured Protoform X aboard their ship, are assigned to chase down Megatron. Colony Omicron's former chief of security, Depth Charge, follows in pursuit of Protoform X.

* The Predacon Tripredacus Council view Megatron's independent actions as dangerous, and send Ravage 4 million years into the past to assassinate all Maximals and Predacons involved with the Beast Wars. Their plan ends in failure.

* While Optimus Primal's Maximals return to Cybertron with the captured Megatron, Megatron escapes into an earlier period and uses a virus bomb to conquer the planet before the Maximals return to the planet.

* Primal and his crew are affected by the virus bomb and lose their memories and ability to transform, but through the guidance of Oracle, they are reformatted into new bodies. It is revealed that Primal was sent into the past to bring organic beast bodies back to Cybertron as part of Oracle's plan. Primal takes Megatron with him as he throws himself into the core of Cybertron, a fountain of organic energy. They die. The captured sparks are all freed, and Cybertron is reformatted into a verdant world with a balance of organic and machine.

* Primal and Megatron, despite having died, are reborn on a parallel world through the power of the ancient Transformer Logos Prime, who resides there. They descend to Jungle Planet and gain new bodies. They cause the Ignition Effect on the planet for the first time.

Era unknown
* The ancient Gaians, who live on Planet Gaia (Earth in the future), succeed in obtaining Angolmois energy. However, they discover that the energy could potentially destroy the entire universe if it responds to an evil heart, and so they leave an observation system on the moon and abandon their planet, leaving for space.

Tens of thousands of years later
* An armored platoon led by the next-generation Galvatron seeks to possess the Angolmois energy dormant within Planet Gaia, and Lio Convoy's team attempt to stop them.

* Lio Convoy travels through the Blasty Zone to the year 2005.

* Galvatron summons the artificial planet Nemesis. Lio Convoy and his crew use the power of the Energon Matrix to seal the Angolmois energy into capsules and release them into space. Galvatron is destroyed.

* After Nemesis explodes, Lio Convoy is swallowed up by the ensuing wormhole and is transported to the planet Dinosaur in the past.

Several years after the battle on Gaia
* Magmatron, who is obsessed with vengeance for Planet Dinosaur, which was attacked by Unicron in the past, attempts to collect the Angolmois capsules. Meanwhile, military instructor Big Convoy and his new recruits learn of the capsules via a message from Lio Convoy and make the capsules' collection their mission.

* The Blentrons, servants of Unicron, steal the capsules. Unicron resurrects as an energy being, and the second Great War begins. Unicron attacks Vector Sigma and is reborn as Vector Sigma Unicron, using Cybertron as his new body.

* Big Convoy, aided by Lio Convoy, uses the Matrix Buster to defeat Unicron, who has returned to being an energy being, and thus brings peace to the universe. Afterwards, Lio Convoy becomes Great Convoy and is promoted to the ruling body. After the graduation ceremony for the recruits, the Maximals and Predacons stop fighting and cooperate to rebuild Cybertron.
Summary
As Optimus lies defeated, Megatron stands gloating over his nemesis. To add insult to injury, Megatron has taken a new body...Primal's Optimal body, minus the beast mode. And, to make it just right, Megatron then adds the sparks of the Maximals to the spark containment chamber. Enraged, Optimus fights back, breaking out, where he sees the sparkless bodies of Cheetor, Silverbolt, and Blackarachnia. As Megatron attacks, Primal flees to a power generator storage area, where he destroys several, causing Megatron to lose an arm. As Primal to a nearby river, he dives, only to have Megatron shot a hole in the ground, causing them to sink into a whirlpool.

As Optimus wakes up, he realizes he is in the chamber of the Oracle. However, the technorganic orchard has been razed, and he sees Rattrap and Botanica lying on the ground. Megatron then arrives, and takes him to the surface. Heading toward the Council Citadel, Megatron activates a throne built into the Citadel to appear, then opens the spark chamber, absorbing the sparks and preparing to ascend to supplant the Matrix and achieve Godhood. Primal tries to talk, but Megatron then activates the Key to Vector Sigma, to be used against the organic core. However, Megatron cannot fully activate the Oracle, as he and Primal are linked. Megatron then severs the link, and Primal fears that he has failed. However, the sparks of his comrades speak to him, inspiring him on. Shooting two seeds near Megatron's arms, Primal then tries to knock him into the core. However, Megatron grabs hold of Optimus, who merely shoots off Megatron's fingers to sever the vine, allowing them both to fall into the core. At that point, both Optimus and Megatron die in the core. From space, a bright light rises, then begins to cover the surface of Cybertron.

Waking up, the Maximals find themselves in an organic world, which they realize is Cybertron. Rattrap is somewhat worried, then Botanica appears, and he jumps into her arms. As Silverbolt sweeps Blackarachnia off her feet, Waspinator appears as a tiny, technorganic wasp, pissed that he's been screwed over again. Then, the Oracle shows Cheetor a vision of Optimus Primal's spark, flying away, telling him to "transform, and transcend". As it fades, Cheetor mutters that he understands. In the distance, the freed Transformers, their sparks once again in bodies, run over the horizon, ready to assume control of the newly technorganic Cybertron.

:Waspinator is a Predacon in the Beast Era portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

Waspinator is God's whipping boy. If something goes wrong, it happens to him. If something blows up, he is usually at the epicenter of the explosion (or at least close enough) and is therefore blasted into his components. He also doesn't talk very well (he hazz a problem with pronounzzing zzertain letterzz), so he's easy to make fun of. Some might consider this speech quirk a "lisp", but really, he just likes the letter "Z" a bit too much. (So, those prone to witticisms could call it a a "lizzzzp.") He also refers to himself in the third person, and to most other people by nicknames like "cat-bot" and "two-head". Megatron has classified the harebrained Predacon as expendable, much to Waspinator's dismay. This is especially true after the many Transmetal upgrades that enabled Megatron himself to take to the sky.

However, Waspinator's not stupid. He has caught on to his lot in life and tries to avoid his fate as often as possible, but his fate always finds him - in the forms of friend and foe, fleshlings, and even Mother Nature. Thankfully, Waspinator is almost supernaturally durable and has survived the most devastating and humiliating of defeats. Whether this is a boon or a curse is anyone's guess.
While Megatron, his lieutenant, and another underling stole a Maximal relic, the Golden Disk, the Predacon who would later name himself Waspinator stole a ship with the help of an accomplice he nicknamed "Beakbot." The two had a contest to name the ship, but "Waspinator" lost, and thus the stolen ship was dubbed the Darksyde. "Waspinator" believed Buzzerbot would have been a better name. For reasons known only to Primus, Megatron agreed.

After escaping Cybertron, the Darksyde was intercepted by the Axalon and the Chromia 10, but after an intense space battle, only the Darksyde and the Axalon remained. Megatron ordered "Waspinator" to execute their planned transwarp jump, opening up a portal which both ships entered. Dawn of Future's Past

Waspinator, part of Megatron's rogue band of Predacons, landed on an unknown planet with dangerous levels of unstable energon. To protect themselves from the energon, the Predacons took organic beast modes. In Waspinator's case, he now transformed into a large green wasp. The first conflict between the stranded Predacons and their Maximal pursuers came when the Maximal Cheetor stumbled across Waspinator.

When Rhinox had his personality program converted to that of a Predacon, he started surreptitiously taking out the various Predacons. He swung a cargo crate into Waspinator, giving him a concussion. As a result, Waspy flew around in a daze, claiming to be the Insecticon Shrapnel as well as the great Wonko the Sane. This dementia was apparently reversed when Cheetor later got annoyed at his yattering and shot him down. Dark Designs

The "ghost" of Starscream traveled through time and possessed his body (even changing the Predacon sigil on his helmet to a Decepticon one). It took a major energon explosion to dislodge Starscream's immortal spark from Waspinator's body. Possession

After the mysterious aliens detonated the unstable energon on the planet using the artificial second moon, Waspinator fell into the Restoration pool on the bridge of the Darksyde as the ship was rocked by the force of the transwarp wave resultant from the moon's explosion. Bathed in the regenerative fluids, this prevented him from becoming a Transmetal. He was also the first to realize that this seemingly unknown planet was, in fact, Earth. Dinobot had made the same realization and stole into the Darksyde to retrieve both of Megatron's disks. Waspinator proposed the two work together to steal the discs, and much to his surprise, Dinobot agreed... and threw him into the security shield. Waspinator was crushed into a cube by the disks' security contraption, leaving Dinobot free to steal the discs unharmed, and crawled away to the CR chamber using his only free leg. Coming of the Fuzors, Part 1

After the destruction of the Darksyde at Tigerhawk's hands, Megatron sent Waspinator, Inferno, and Quickstrike on an errand to find a new base, which was really nothing more than pointless busywork while Megatron went to do more important things. As the trio staked out an early human tribe that had taken up residence in a series of caves, Waspinator decided he'd finally had enough and ripped off his Predacon symbol, declaring himself out of the Beast Wars.

"I said no! Dragon-Bot command you, Sub-Commander Kiss-Butt! Dragon-Bot not command Waspinator! Not any more! Waspinator sick of being evil! Sick of being Predacon! And Waspinator especially sick of getting blown to scrap all the time! Sooo, Waspinator quit! As of now, which means Ant-Bot and Two-Head can just pucker their mandibles and plant big, wet, juicy one right here on Waspinator's big . . . fat . . . stripy . . . "

At this point Waspinator was interrupted by getting blown to scrap by Inferno and Quickstrike. Nemesis, Part 1
Sadly, for Waspinator, the Protohumans he had ruled over grew tired of his presence and forced him to leave the planet and return to Cybertron (and his proper time) under his own power. *Waspinator (Deluxe, 1996/1997)
: Japanese ID number: D-3

: Waspinator transforms into a large organic wasp. His stinger separates to become a hand-held spring-loaded missile launcher for his robot mode; the bolts are stored on the underside of his insect-wings. His head is on a vertical column that rotates around a horizontal axle; each end has a different head, one "mutant", one "robot". The "mutant" head was used as the base for his CGI model, and thus the norm for his fictional portrayals.

: The Takara version of Waspinator uses slightly brighter, more primary colors than the Hasbro version.

: This mold was also used to make Buzz Saw and Dirgegun.

*Cheetas vs. Waspitor (Multi-pack, 1997)
: In Japan, Waspinator was available both individually and in a two-pack with Cheetor. The two-pack version was unchanged from the normal individually-packaged one.

: Japanese ID number: D-42

: Now an almost completely robotic figure, Transmetal Waspinator transforms into a robotic wasp and features a third "jet" mode, flipping and folding his wins into a fighter-jet configuration as well as flipping a cockpit/nosecone between his insect-head mandibles.

: Though he appears solid black at first glance, he is actually made of very dark transparent-black/green plastic.

: The Takara version of this toy is almost completely identical, except the "WASPINATOR" tampograph was replaced with "DESTRON" and the Predacon sigil.

*Metals Cheetas vs. Metals Waspitor (Multi-pack, 1999)
: In Japan, Transmetal Waspinator was available both individually and in a two-pack with Transmetal Cheetor. The two-pack version was unchanged from the normal individually-packaged one.

*Waspinator (Deluxe, 1999)
: This toy is a redeco of the first Waspinator toy. A "FoxKids!" sticker on the packaging promoted the cartoon, which was playing on Fox at the time. It is also hideously ugly, consisting primarily of slate blue and green-gold plastic, with dark blue (barely) translucent parts.

*Waspinator (Deluxe Transmetal, 2000)
:This toy is a redeco of the Transmetal Waspinator toy. A "FoxKids!" sticker on the packaging promoted the cartoon, which was playing on Fox at the time. The toy's new deco bears more than a passing resemblance to Buzz Saw.
*Waspinator (Tenth Anniversary, 2006)

: This toy is a slight redeco of the first Waspinator toy to make it closer to Waspinator's cartoon appearance. He came with the head to Transmutate plus a DVD with the episode "Possession".

: This toy is a ridiculously-extensively-painted redeco of the first Waspinator toy to make it almost completely show-accurate to Waspinator's cartoon appearance (forgiving mold issues and unpaintable plastic, of course). He came with a DVD of the episode "Power Surge".
*Darksyde Megatron and Darksyde Waspinator (Bagged set, 2006)

: Available exclusively at the 2006 event itself, this two-pack represents Waspinator and Megatron before the events of the Beast Wars show. "Darksyde Waspinator" is a Basic-sized figure, originally used for Machine Wars Skywarp and Thundercracker, which autotransforms to robot mode from a Dassault Rafale fighter jet. (One can surmise, however, that it is meant to represent a Cybertronic design in this case.) His rifle splits into two pieces, which store in the backs of his lower legs.

: This mold was also used to make Beast Wars II Dirge, Robots in Disguise Skyfire, and Robot Masters Wing Stun.

Unreleased
For a brief time, Hasbro's official website checklist featured listings for two "Halloween Horrorcon Value Packs" that were to be Wal*Mart exclusives... which also likely explains why they were canceled. (Wal*Mart had taken a good half-dozen exclusives and released them more-or-less simultaneously, leading to a huge glut. A lot of other Transformers exclusives were canceled during the Universe era.)

In 2004, several test-shots appeared on ebay in a group, among them the Transmetal Waspinator toy with opaque-salmon wings and lavender insect legs. This, presumably, was to have been the Universe incarnation of Waspinator, as the other toys in the group line up with the names given for the two Halloween sets. He was to come in a "Vs." two-pack with the presumably-Autobot character Nightprowler.

Trivia
* Waspinator was originally chosen by Hasbro to be one of the characters killed off for the second season of the Beast Wars cartoon to help make way for new characters (read: product). However, story editors Bob Forward and Larry DiTillio convinced them to spare Waspinator on the grounds of his popularity with the online fan-base, so Terrorsaur and Scorponok took the plunge instead.

* Waspinator was originally slated to appear in the very first Beast Wars video game, and even had a character model built. However, he was ultimately unused and only appeared in footage taken from the Beast Wars cartoon.

* Waspinator appears to be the inspiration for Buzzer-Bot from the Playskool Go-Bots line.

*As a side note, Waspinator's original and 10th Anniversary toys contain a high number of ball and swivel joints, which more than easily separate. Makes him a little more show-accurate, after all.

*When Waspinator is hit from behind by a stasus pod ship made by Blackarachnia, a toilet is seen falling from his smashed body.

*According to Waspinator's profile in Beast Wars Universe, he likes flying and nectar.

Tranquility is a city located in the northwesternmost portion of California in the United States of America.

Tranquility, for unknown reasons, is frequently identified simply as 'Tranquility, USA.'

Sam lives there. It's not just a game location.

Fiction
Transformers (2007)
Though never explicitly named, Tranquility is where the Witwickys and Mikaela Banes live. After receiving Bumblebee's call for assistance, the Autobots make a (semi)successful planetfall in Tranquility. Only Optimus Prime manages to land in an uninhabited area.

Transformers: The Game
Tranquility possesses a massive police force which tends to shoot first and not bother asking questions when it comes to giant robots. They are also firmly in the pocket of Sector Seven. Barricade takes advantage of their mentality by disguising himself as one of their number. Interestingly, the cops seem to consider the Autobots a bigger threat than the Decepticons. This is especially confusing when considers all the damage Barricade, Shockwave, and the Decepticon drones did to the city.
The cop was convinced that Sam was a junkie, as he was found with pills on his possession, perscribed for Mojo. Ron Witwicky explained that the pills was for their dog, but the cop was still unconvinced, and when he caught Sam eying his piece, he threatened to "bring it". Sam asked if the cop himself was on drugs.

Despite having a mustache, it is currently presumed that this individual was an actual flesh and blood human, and not a Decepticon hologram.

:Brawl is a Decepticon from the live-action movie continuity family. He is sometimes referred to as Devastator.

To say Brawl is a warrior is like calling Cybertron a hunk of metal. Brawl does not just enjoy fighting, he is consumed by it. Tearing Autobots apart is embedded into his very core, and every fiber-optic cable of his being is obsessed with wild, unyielding combat. The only thing he enjoys, or even cares about, is the fury of battle. And he loves a good explosion. Particularly if it's one he created, and if it was an Autobot that is exploding.
Titan Magazines
Debuting in Transformers Comic issue 2 and called Devastator, he is known as Megatron's "pet weapon of mass destruction!". Megatron threw him at the Autobots so he could reach the AllSpark, and had armed him with a foldspace warhead. When the Autobots pointed out that at this range, the warhead would take him out as well, he replied "Eh. So?" and fired anyway. He loves a good explosion that much.

He has his own solo story in #4 - or "Devastator Lays Waste To Issue #4", as the Next Issue ad has it.

Brawl was oddly absent from events surrounding the Ghost 1 discovery. Whether he was aboard the Nemesis and otherwise indisposed or joined up with Starscream at a later date is unknown.

Autobot campaign
Brawl arrived in Mission City shortly after Jazz took down Starscream, Blackout and a pair of Dreadwings single-handedly. The Autobot's victory was short-lived... and so was the Autobot, as Brawl punctured Jazz's chest with his claw, extinguishing his spark. Ironhide arrived just in time to witness the killing, and fought through a horde of Decepticon units to destroy Brawl.

Decepticon campaign
Brawl, Bonecrusher and Starscream were hiding out in a human military installation in the desert when they received word that Frenzy and Barricade had discovered the location of the AllSpark. When the three Decepticons mobilized, the two ground-based machines were assaulted by tanks designed to fire holding beams of electrical energy, forcing Starscream to back-and-forth babysit the two Decepticons as they tried to escape.

Brawl later stood by Megatron's side in Washington D.C. after they had retrieved the AllSpark from the destroyed Autobots and had decimated pretty much everything in their path.

:(Note: Brawl was not a playable character in the console versions of the game.)

Transformers: Autobots
Brawl appears at the Hoover Dam after successfully defusing several bombs intended to free Megatron. As Optimus Prime attempts to rendezvous with the other Autobots, Brawl blocks his only path &mdash; a hidden Air Force hangar tunneled into the canyon. During the fight, Brawl produces a pair of Tank Drones that regenerate when destroyed. He fights with his claw and multitude of guns, and when he's taken enough damage will retreat into his shell, a la tank mode. Here he becomes nearly invincible, with his only weakness being the drones scattered around the arena.

Transformers: Decepticons
Brawl is a playable character

Transformers (2007) film
spoiler

Brawl (here called "Devastator") was lying in wait at a military depot when Starscream contacted the Decepticon infiltration team, informing them that the All Spark had been found and they were to move out. Devastator acknowledged that he was in transit and rolled out of the depot. He met up with Barricade and Bonecrusher and hit the highway, though Devastator separated from the group before Barricade and Bonecrusher got on the freeway and met up with Autobot/human convoy.

Arriving at Mission City in the aftermath of Starscream's opening attack on the Autobots and their human allies, Devastator fired shells from his main gun, narrowly missing several targets before running over vehicles abandoned by human bystanders. As the American soldiers fanned out in search of cover, the Autobots charged Devastator. He focused his attacks on Ironhide, who was forced to somersault over his shells. This distraction allowed the Autobot Jazz to jump on top of Devastator and point his cannon away from the humans. Devastator managed to transform and throw the smaller Autobot off him, but not before Jazz destroyed his left side rocket launcher pod.

Damaged, but not down, Devastator fired two rockets from his remaining launcher, missing the heavily armed Autobot as he somersaulted over the missiles. Ironhide and Jazz managed to fire several shots at Devastator, disorienting him. Ratchet followed up by using his buzzsaw to slice off Devastator's left arm. Ratchet and the humans then fired a volley of sabot rounds, which knocked Devastator to the ground. The only thing that saved him was the Autobots and humans' retreat at the arrival of Megatron. Eventually, Ironhide and Ratchet disengaged from the battle as they left to protect ladiesman217, who was escaping with the All Spark, while Jazz took on Megatron. Now with fewer targets to deal with, Devastator sprayed heavy machine gun fire at the remaining humans, whose leader remarked that the battle was not going well.

Devastator continued to pin down the soldiers until the damaged Autobot Bumblebee suddenly attacked while on the back of of a tow truck driven by Ladiesman217's female companion. With Bumblebee's plasma cannon being the deciding factor, the human soldiers rallied and fired more sabots, piercing Devastator's armor until a final shot from Bumblebee struck Devastator's spark and killed him.

Devastator's body was dumped into the deepest part of the ocean along with his fellow Decepticons, in the hopes the intense pressure and cold will destroy whatever remained. Transformers (2007)
*Decepticon Brawl (Deluxe Class, 2007)
:Japanese ID number: MD-03

: Deluxe-class Brawl transforms into a heavily modified fictional tank based upon an M1A1 Abrams, fitted with angular reflective armor, a mine plow and external spare fuel canisters. Mounted upon the turret is a smaller sub-turret housing two anti-aircraft cannons and rocket launchers. The spring-loaded main cannon fires a translucent red projectile.

: In robot mode, Brawl faithfully replicates his movie design, with the only major divergence being that his main gun does not split into smaller guns (although the guns ARE on the back half of the cannon, which is situated on a slider and can be spun around). He is reasonably articulated, with ball and swivel joints in his arms and legs. Thanks to Automorphing, pushing down on the front of his tank during transformation raises the front of the treads and his head up into position for his robot mode, and vice versa for the tank mode. He is armed with his spring-loaded main gun on his right arm and a flip-out blade on his left.

: There is a design flaw in the way Brawl's arms attach to his torso - the rhombic peg and socket system used does not provide a tight enough fit, and thus the arms have a tendency to detach at the shoulder when moved. There have also been some reports of the gears for the treads crack easily and no longer function properly. At least you can reenact that part in the movie where Ratchet saws off Brawl's arm.

:The larger, more heavily armed version of Brawl, this figure is more accurate to the character's CGI model, but with a somewhat inaccurate transformation. It features Brawl's smaller, four-gun turret on his right arm, plus the gatling gun and claw combination on his left arm. The only major diversion in his design is the main turret now resting near his right hip, a la Armada Megatron. It features more articulation and weapons than the Deluxe-class figure, as is to be expected.

:While having no firing missiles, it does feature a number of Automorph gimmicks. First, pressing the button on the front of the tank causes his head and chest pieces to move into position. A scoop/claw has been added to the front of the tank, probably to make the lever to push his head back down stand out less. Second, pressing the headlights on either side of the front end causes the paneling to swing back into place. Finally, by pulling the cannon on the left arm back, the claw swings forward.

:Other features include lights and sounds, activated by pushing back on the main cannon or turning the upper turret. A pair of blades can also swing down from the legs. Although taken from Brawl's concept art, they aren't implemented particularly well... The art shows them jutting forward at a 45 degree angle from the legs, but nothing on the toy impedes the blades from swinging straight down to the ground, right into his feet. They're completely undocumented anywhere on the box or instructions, probably out of embarassment.
: Brawl is a 41-point "Rare" piece in the 3D Battle-Card Game. Constructed of punch-out pieces from plastic cards, he can be assembled into his tank mode, or a sort of representation of his robot mode. Oddly enough, he does not actually have his movie-model head; rather, he uses a recolored version of Barricade's noggin slapped on the Brawl body.
* During the movie, Brawl identifies himself as "Devastator" in a subtitle, an early working name for the character. Despite rumors to the contrary, he is not credited in the film under either name.

* According to Picture Vehicle Coordinator Steve Mann, the filming prop of Brawl was a redress of a tank prop made for another movie. Specifically, it was the 'stealth tank' seen in the film XXX: State of the Union.

*The name 'Brawl' was previously a working name for the character now called Barricade.

* A wallpaper on Hasbro's Transformers web site labels Brawl as "Demolisher", one of several working names for this character.

*Brawl, under the name Devastator appears in the second issue of the Titan's published Transformers magazine/comic, where he takes over from Megatron in fighting Ratchet and Ironhide.

*Jazz' move of racing-transforming-boarding Brawl is not completely unlike the scene in The Transformers: The Movie where Kup does the same thing with Blitzwing.

The Transformers: The Movie is an animated feature film based on the original Transformers toyline. It was released in the United States on August 8, 1986.

Often referred to by fans simply as "the movie" or "TFTM", this film opens with characters who had been featured in the first two years of the toyline and associated media (cartoons, comic books, etc.), but quickly introduces new characters and kills many of the old ones to make room. In particular, Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Starscream are all destroyed during the course of the film.

The movie was a step up in almost every area from the television series, with a more sophisticated plot, more serious treatment of war and violence, a hugely ambitious scope and a greatly increased animation budget with well-known celebrities providing voice work. For these reasons the film remains very popular with children of the 1980s.

A planet-sized Transformer called Unicron who eats other planets is approaching Cybertron. As part of their continuing wars, the Autobots and Decepticons have a fierce battle on Earth which sees both Optimus Prime and Megatron mortally wounded. Prime passes the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus and dies, and Megatron is transformed by Unicron into Galvatron. Starscream (briefly) assumes leadership of the Decepticons, but is killed when Galvatron arrives at Cybertron. Galvatron then chases the surviving Autobots on Earth across space, splitting them up and taking the Matrix. The Autobots find their way back to each other, and follow Galvatron to Cybertron just as Unicron transforms into robot mode and begins to eat their world. Travelling inside Unicron, Hot Rod recovers the Matrix, transforms into Rodimus Prime, and uses the Matrix to destroy Unicron.

In the first sequence of the film, a mechanical planet called Unicron is shown travelling through the depths of space, then approaching and destroying another metal planet called Lithone which has robotic inhabitants, much like Cybertron. During the attack, robots, vehicles, buildings, and even large chunks of rock float off the surface of the planet and spiral into the large "mouth" on Unicron.

The scene then transitions to Cybertron, and the narrator explains that it is the year 2005, and that the Decepticons are now in control of the planet. The Autobots are preparing to launch an assault to retake the planet from hidden bases on two of Cybertron's moons. The Autobots launch a shuttle to pick up a final shipment of energon from Earth before they strike.

Plans for the attack are overheard by Laserbeak, who reports back to Megatron. The Decepticons attack the Autobot shuttle en route to Earth, wiping out its crew (including Ironhide, Prowl, Ratchet and the guy in the picture up there). Using the Autobots' own shuttle, the Decepticons are able to get very close to the Autobots' base on Earth, Autobot City, before they are detected, and begin a devastating surprise attack on the unprepared city.

During the battle at Autobot City, both Optimus Prime and Megatron suffer mortal injuries, and a number of other characters are also killed. Eventually the Decepticons retreat, but the damage suffered by the Autobots has been severe. Shortly after the battle, Prime lies on his deathbed. He passes the reins of leadership to Ultra Magnus and gives him the Matrix of Leadership. (Though Hot Rod actually touches the Matrix before Magnus does.) Prime relates a prophecy: "One day, an Autobot shall rise from our ranks, and use the power of the Matrix to light our darkest hour." He then gives the oath, "'Til all are one", and dies. This sequence of events is observed remotely by Unicron, who appears unusually concerned by the survival of the Matrix.

The Decepticons are making their escape aboard Astrotrain, but are too heavy for him to get them all home under his own power. After putting the matter to a fair vote, the Decepticons decide to throw their injured members off the ship to better the chance of survival for the rest. One of the most severely injured Decepticons is Megatron. Starscream tosses him out and claims leadership of the Decepticon army.

Megatron and the other adrift Decepticons then encounter Unicron in interstellar space. Unicron offers to rebuild Megatron and his men in exchange for their service. Megatron reluctantly agrees, dies off under Unicron's power, and is reborn and reformatted into Galvatron. The other Decepticons are turned into Cyclonus, Scourge, and The Sweeps. Unicron provides them with a ship, and sends them to kill Ultra Magnus and destroy the Matrix, stating that the Matrix is the only thing which can stand in his way.

Galvatron first stops at Cybertron to take his revenge by killing Starscream and reclaiming leadership of the Decepticons. Almost immediately afterwards, Unicron arrives in Cybertron's vicinity and devours at least two moons -- both of the Autobots' moon bases are destroyed. Under coercion by Unicron, Galvatron finally heads to Earth to kill Ultra Magnus, but Magnus and the other surviving Autobots flee in a pair of shuttles. Eventually Galvatron manages to cause one shuttle to crash on yet another metal planet (Quintessa), and detonates the other with a volley of missiles. However, the Autobots in the second shuttle escape unnoticed by separating the front portion of their shuttle just before impact.

The Autobots in the crashed shuttle, Hot Rod, Kup, and the Dinobots, find themselves separated and in a hostile environment. Hot Rod and Kup are captured by a squad of Allicons and taken before a Quintesson judge and his court. While being held there, they learn the name and nature of Unicron from Kranix, a survivor of the planet destroyed in the opening of the film, which he calls Lithone. Meanwhile, the Dinobots encounter and befriend a young, wild Autobot named Wheelie who has been living alone on Quintessa. Together, they crash the trial just as Hot Rod and Kup are fighting losing odds against the Quintessons' Sharkticons. The tide is turned, and the Autobots commandeer a Quintesson ship.

The other group of Autobots has landed on the planet Junkion to make repairs, but are attacked yet again by Galvatron, who was tipped off to their survival by Unicron. During the battle, Ultra Magnus tries to open the Matrix to use its power, but is unable to do so, and instead is killed. Galvatron absconds the Matrix, taking it away to Unicron. The remaining Autobots -- Perceptor, Springer, Arcee, and Spike's son Daniel -- are then ambushed by Junkions, the eponymous natives of Junkion, who are also giant transforming robots. This battle is cut short, however, by the arrival of Hot Rod's group in their Quintesson ship. After exchanging the universal greeting they all make friends, and the Junkions restore Ultra Magnus to life. Together, the whole group travels to Cybertron to try to recover the Matrix.

Galvatron attempts to open the Matrix to use its power against Unicron, but is also unable to get it open. Unicron, not pleased with this attempted treachery, shocks Galvatron by transforming from a planet into a planet-sized robot. Unicron plucks Galvatron off his chest and swallows him, Matrix and all, and then begins attacking Cybertron itself. Shockwave scrambles the Decepticon forces to defend the planet, but they are ineffective against so large an enemy. Shortly the Autobots arrive from Junkion, and fly the Quintesson ship straight through Unicron's eye. This impact destroys the ship, and the Autobots fall out inside Unicron. Hot Rod, separated from the others, eventually runs into Galvatron. During their fight, Hot Rod gets his hands on the Matrix and hears Optimus' voice speak the words, "Arise, Rodimus Prime." Hot Rod grows in stature, adopts a much sterner demeanor into Rodimus Prime, and quickly dispatches Galvatron by tossing him through Unicron's hull out into space. He then opens the Matrix, which fills Unicron with light and begins destroying him.

In the meantime, the other Autobots inside Unicron have located some of their comrades from the moon bases who had been presumed dead, including Bumblebee and Daniel's father, Spike. The Autobots, including Rodimus, escape through Unicron's remaining eye just as he begins to fall apart and explode. The scene then immediately shifts to the surface of Cybertron, where -- for unclear reasons -- the Autobots seem to be in charge again. Rodimus predicts an era of peace and prosperity, and the film closes with a shot of Unicron's severed head still floating in orbit around Cybertron.

Significance in Transfandom
Transformers: The Movie remains one of the most important elements of the entire Transformers brand, both within the fiction and from the perspective of the brand's popularity and "mindshare".

Fictionally, it established several story concepts that have been used repeatedly in the years since 1986, some of which -- such as Unicron and the Matrix -- are now central to the entire Transformers mythos. The movie is also the centerpiece of the most well-known Transformers continuity: the G1 animated universe. The G1 cartoon is split into "pre-movie" and "post-movie" sections which feature differenct characters and settings, and even somewhat different visual styles. (Most pre-movie episodes were animated by the studio Toei, while most post-movie episodes were animated by AKOM.)

To an entire generation of young fans, the movie was the most visually spectacular and narratively epic Transformers experience of their entire youth. Events such as the death of Optimus Prime are widely reported to have reduced many kids to tears. It is hardly a surprise that these emotional experiences embedded themselves deeply in many fans' memories.

This is not all to say that the movie is a "masterpiece", exactly. The film displays an arguably cynical attitude towards itself as a vehicle for advertising toys, especially in the way beloved characters are killed -- sometimes gratuitously -- for sake of justifying the story's focus on a new group of toys. Further, the two primary plot devices -- Unicron and the Matrix -- have no prior establishment in the fiction. Unicron is given no backstory or justification; he simply exists, and is very dangerous, and is afraid of the Matrix, all for no adequately explained reason. The introduction of the Matrix itself is a heavy retcon. The story asks the audience to accept that this cosmically-powerful artifact has been in Prime's possession all along (even though an X-ray of Optimus Prime's innards in the Season 2 episode "A Prime Problem" show absolutely no signs of said Matrix), but has somehow never been relevant before.
Finally, the movie bears many similarities to Star Wars: There are several character-parallels (Springer is a Han Solo-type and Arcee even has Princess Leia's hairdo!), the primary threat is similar (it's the Death Star... but it transforms!), and both feature a climactic battle where the young hero hears the voice of his wise mentor one last time before saving the day. To be a bit more fair to TF:TM, however, most of these similarities are either superficial (Arcee's Leia-hair) or can be seen as elements common to thousands of years worth of epic storytelling through human history, not just common to Star Wars.

Trivia and controversies
This film was one of the last professional performances by Orson Welles, if not the very last. According to production materials shown at 2000 by Tim Finn, the voice recording sessions for TF:TM were done on September 10 and 11 of 1985. Welles died on October 10 of that same year. It has often been speculated that Unicron's last line ("Destiny... you cannot destroy my destiny...!") was recorded by another actor -- possibly Nimoy -- because it sounds different than the other lines. This speculation has been quashed by statements by Transformers voice director Wally Burr.

Although the movie was billed in some advertisements before its theatrical release as being "widescreen", the movie was in fact animated in a 1.33:1 aspect ratio. It was intended to be matted down in the projector by the projectionist when screened, but all video transfers of the movie were done without mattes, meaning that there is actually more picture visible in the fullscreen video and DVD releases than there would have been in theaters. In November of 2006, a 20th Anniversary edition DVD of the film was released by Sony BMG which included, for the first time, a widescreen version of the film. However, comparison of frames from this new disc and old editions again shows that there is no missing picture on the sides -- the new "wide" version has simply had the top and bottom of the picture cropped off, meaning less visible picture.fact

The Dinobot Snarl is mysteriously absent from almost the entire movie, even though the Dinobots as a group are featured prominently. It is unclear why this is the case, but one possible explanation is that copies of the script which have come into fans' hands repeatedly list the Dinobots but never make mention of Snarl by name. In fact, at one point the script refers to "the four Dinobots". Despite this, Snarl does appear in three very brief shots, although he has no lines and no action.

With the exception of Starscream, Unicron, and possibly Shockwave, only the Autobots suffered casualities in the movie. All of the other "dead" Decepticons from the Autobot City battle were rebuilt into Galvatron's new troops, and although Decepticons were shown taking heavy damage while fighting Unicron, their identities and their condition are uncertain. Additionally, both Starscream and Unicron survived in the post-movie series in some form or another. Shockwave's death in the finished film is highly uncertain, although in the script it is fairly strongly implied. He does make some appearances in crowd shots in later cartoon episodes, but these may be examples of the fairly common animation errors in those episodes.

There exists more than one English-language version of the film, with the following differences in content from the American theatrical run:

* In some versions (notably the European version) the opening credits are replaced with a scrolling text ("Star Wars style") which provides backstory.

* In some versions (notably the European version) the film ends with a narrator reassuring the audience that Optimus Prime will return.

* Instances of swearing in the film (there are two) were edited out; sometimes one, sometimes both. Those instances are: Spike yelling, "Oh shit, what are we gonna do now?" after the self-destructing Moon Base 2 fails to scratch Unicron, and Ultra Magnus growling, "Open, damn it, open!" while trying to open the Matrix to fend off Galvatron and the Sweeps on Junkion. The UK cinema version had the swearing included but when it was released on VHS in the UK Spike's line was cut. However it has been restored on all UK DVD releases.

*Instead of DEG the Rank Film "gong man" appears before the film starts as Rank were the UK distributors.

Though most likely coincidental, the movie bears many similarities to the Marvel Comics Fantastic Four miniseries "The Galactus Trilogy":

* The presence of an enormous world-devouring cosmic entity that threatens to destroy the heroes' home planet (Galactus/Unicron).

* The presence of a single item that is the only thing that can stop said cosmic entitiy (The Ultimate Nullifier/The Matrix of Leadership).

* The presence of a herald of said cosmic entity, who ultimately betrays the entity (The Silver Surfer/Galvatron).

Originally, Ultra Magnus' "death sequence" on Junkion called for him to be lassoed and drawn and quartered by the Sweeps' energy beams, but this was deemed too graphic for audiences, hence the less disturbing "shot to death" sequence seen instead. There is evidence that the original sequence had been fully animated when the decision was made, however; the Sweeps still kept their solid energy lassos when they fire upon Mags, and Mags is seen visibly straining against what appears to be said lassos (edited out and replaced with laser fire) before exploding.

There's a few notable animation errors in the movie:

* When Ultra Magnus accepts the Matrix, he's seen inserting it into his chest twice. (Some fans have joked that Mags was forcing the Matrix inside him, as another sign that it had chosen Hot Rod as the new leader and rejected him.)

* Swoop's lower leg appears in Autobot City far ahead of the Dinobot for a brief second.

* Not so much an error, but if you watch Sludge when he's haymaker'ed by Devastator, his eyes pop out of their sockets in Looney Tunes fashion.

* When Soundwave sends out his casette troops, Rumble is the same color as Frenzy.

Soundtrack
Released on Scotti Bros. Records, the soundtrack to the movie was made available in both vinyl LP (long-playing) record form and audio cassette. At an undetermined point in the 90's, it was released on CD as well (there are no new markings on the CD booklet or outer case to indicate when the CD was released).
