Beast Wars: Transformers (toyline)

98.197.115.202: /* Predacon */

nav-BW

With sales of the Generation 2 toyline proving unremarkable by 1995, Hasbro faced a choice: end the Transformers brand for a second time, or completely revamp the concept. They chose the second option, and Beast Wars was the result.

The new franchise consisted entirely of robots who transformed into beasts: insects, mammals, and more. The traditional factions of Autobot and Decepticon were replaced with heroic Maximals and evil Predacons. Most radically, the beast modes were intended to represent fully natural and organic animals, as opposed to the "mechanical beasts" represented by the likes of G1's Dinobots and Terrorcons.

The Beast Wars toyline brought poseability to full fruition. Whereas G2 marketed a handful of toys as "super poseable", Beast Wars made it standard for virtually every toy. Heavy use of ball joints gave the figures unprecedented degrees of freedom -- often greater than that of a normal, non-transforming action figure. Poseability -- a rarity in the days of G1 -- became commonplace and expected after Beast Wars.

Concealed parts and weapons also became standard during Beast Wars. Again, G2 had introduced a number of toys whose kibble had a place to store when not in use, but it was Beast Wars that made it a universal feature.

Beast Wars also introduced a standardized system of price points to Transformers: $5 Basics, $10 Deluxes, $15 Megas, and $20 Ultras. The price for Basics eventually rose to $7, but the system remained largely unaltered through the end of Beast Machines. Portions of the system continue to be used today (the Basics were "Scouts" during the Cybertron franchise, and the Mega has been replaced with the $20, slightly-larger "Voyager".) A rarely-seen, extra-large Super class was introduced with the Optimal Optimus toy in 1998, which was also the first Transformer toy to feature a true vehicle mode since the end of G2.

The toyline evolved over its three and a half year run. 1996–97 featured purely-organic beasts exclusively. 1998 was dominated by two sublines: Fuzors, whose beast modes combined aspects of two different animals, and Transmetals, which featured metallic-finished chrome and sleekly mechanical beast modes. In 1999, the Transmetal 2s were the primary offering, featuring asymetrical and often bizarrely patchwork fusions of mechanical and organic in both modes.

Beast Wars largely ended as a toyline when Hasbro elected to revamp the franchise and re-introduce vehicular Transformers, leading to the Beast Machines toyline. Though a new franchise, Beast Machines continued many aspects of the Beast Wars toyline including a number of major characters, the Maximal faction, and beast forms that combined mechanical and organic aspects. Furthermore, the Beast Wars title would continue to grace sporadic toys such as store exclusives, convention exclusives, and a 10th anniversary line in 2006. And another 10th anniversary line for Japan in 2007.
Unlike previous assortments, buying a case of twelve did not guarantee you all eleven of the "common" Mini-Cons. Though it has yet to be confirmed, this is most likely due to the four "partner" Mini-Cons in the assortment who were made in larger numbers than the others, due to being gang-molded with their larger partners, who were part of the normal retail Galaxy Force line. As such, each case often had multiples of a couple of the "partners", missing some of the others, on top of the one-in-every-two-cases chaser piece Bug General.
Micron Booster Ver. 4: Endless Battle - Eternal Prisoner
In 2007, Takara brought back the Micron Booster series with a set of redecoes using the Classics Mini-Con molds (which had not been released in Japan previously). This set was available only at Japanese Circle K, Sunkus, Three F and Lawson stores. As far as chase pieces go, this set ups the ante by having two chases, Detectus and Chromebite, with only one of those two in a single case. Because there are only ten individuals in a case of twelve, that means two duplicates in any single case.

Although the title and subtitle for the series suggest some sort of story associated with the toys, the only known fiction is from the shipping/display case: "The battle between the Cybertrons and Destrons never ends. A new battle of the Micron Warriors has begun."

This series uses the "classic" Transformers logo, so presumably it takes someplace in the Japanese Generation 1 continuity. With the inclusion of characters bearing the Maximal and Predacon sigils, probably in a "transitional" period near the beginning of the Beast Era.

This assortment includes...

They'll even egg him on just to make him angrier, and deadlier.
Detailed Synopsis
Unicron is no longer functional, his body lying dormant in space. Hot Shot lets the assembled armies return to Cybertron to begin the rebuilding.

Inside of Unicron, Galvatron holds onto the idea that he can still become the sole ruler of the universe. Now that Unicron is gone, it's left to Optimus and Galvatron to finish the war. Optimus and the kids try to argue that now that the two militaries have been united, there's no need to continue the fight, but Galvatron reminds his foe that the hatred left over from an unfinished war would repower Unicron.

On Cybertron, Side Swipe alerts the other that Unicron is in motion again. Hot Shot decides to go to Unicron to retrieve Optimus, but Jetfire take Hot Shot's place. Cyclonus follows Jetfire.

Optimus says goodbye to the children, the kids don't want to go, but he convinces them that the final battle must be fought. After throwing away The Matrix (so it isn't damaged in battle), Prime starts, the fight with some gunfire and a knee to Galvatron's face. When Megatron gets up, he and prime blast their firepower off each other.

Outside of Unicron, the Jetfire and Cyclonus pick up the kids and bring them back to Cybertron. The kids report on what the two leaders are doing, and it seems Unicron isn't quite dead either. Under heavy pressure, Hot Shot orders the attack against Unicron to be resumed, with special care taken not to harm the leaders.

Inside, Prime and Galvatron continue to rumble. Prime throws one of his wheels directly into Galvatron's primary canon - the resulting explosion blasts Galvatron through a wall, but the Decepticon is only amused by the ferocity of the combat. Unicron's words echo in Prime's mind. Galvatron uses his extending antlers to toss Prime around, but Prime breaks the blades off and uses them against his rival, but Galvatron scores a critical hit through Optimus with his hidden wrist blade.

The transformers buzz around Unicron, blasting him through his own trenches. Alexis notices that during the combat, a large growing black hole has appeared on Unicron's surface.

Prime stands up, refusing to give up the fight. Decompression sends the warriors outside of Unicron, onto his external surface. Galvatron acquires a nearby pipe to use as a battle staff, but Optimus displays amazing agility and stands on the staff, prancing along it to kick Galvatron in the face. While Galvatron is still stunned, Optimus hefts his foe and cramps Galvatron's midsection, but in the process, the metal pipe is shove down Prime's back.

The two warriors break for a moment, and Galvatron admits that even though he lost the battle, he enjoyed the thrill of the battle. The moment of peace between the two is disturbed by Unicron transforming into his planet mode. Prime is stuck holding onto Galvatron as the two are sucked toward Unicron's maw. Galvatron, determined to see only one winner of the war (even if it isn't him) instructs Prime let the Decepticon leader fall. Prime refuses, so Galvatron cuts himself loose and free-falls into oblivion. As soon as Galvatron is absorbed, Unicron vanishes. Left floating in space, Optimus decides he's unworthy of The Matrix.

Sometime later, Hot Shot and Jetfire return the kids to earth. They agree that they all learned a lot from each other ever since their first encounter. Carlos, Fred, and Billy start to cry. With the war over, Prime narrates the closing moments. But hidden behind a distant green planet, Unicron endures.

"Don't be surprised, Galvatron. This is exactly what you wanted. And I fight you not as the leader of the Autobots, but as the leader of all Transformers!"
Animation and/or technical glitches
*When Hot Shot yells "Attack!" as Unicron is transforming back into planet mode, the animation actually shows the Transformer fleet escaping (which would make sense), which suggests Hot Shot's line was a scripting error.

:The smaller jet toy is intended to be 'Starscream', but the stickers placed on the toy have him misspelled as 'Starcream'. The correct spelling is used on the package and instructions, however.
