As he predated Prima, who is characterized as the first Transformer created on Cybertron, it is conceivable that he predates the planet itself (much like the Covenant).
Primon is the earliest documented bearer of the Matrix of Leadership, but how he came to hold the talisman, and his activities during the Quintesson occupation of Cybertron, are unknown. His sole appearance came when Rodimus Prime voyaged into the Matrix in 2005, where he was the first guide the Autobot leader encountered. Primon related to him the story of the Transformers' creation by the Quintessons, and how they were endowed with sentience. He was succeeded as Matrix-bearer by Prima. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4
Primon was seen twice in a swirl of visions experienced by the Covenant at the coming of the Chronarchitect—once as part of a long lineage of Primes, and again having the Matrix torn from his chest by the Liege Maximo. Reaching the Omega Point
Alpha Prime is the first known Matrix-bearer and was succeeded by Guardian Prime.

Notes
*Primon is conspicuously absent from other lists of past Primes, even those by Simon Furman who wrote this text story. When questioned (see below), he offered up "The Matrix forgot?" as an excuse. (Also "Ummm...")
** Hasbro's official doctrine, circa 2010, is that Prima is the first Transformer and first Matrix-bearer. Primon is the elephant in the room when it comes to the thirteen original Transformers, his predating Prima yet to be explained.

* The robot ghost from "Five Faces of Darkness" was never named in the cartoon, having been referred to only as "Ancient Robot" in the episode's dialogue script. The AllSpark Almanac II came along and declared the character an incarnation of Primon, at the same time merging the two characters with the complete cypher, Alpha Prime, who had been mentioned only in passing in Dreawave's More Than Meets The Eye guidebook. Many pages were consolidated that day.

* The symbol stamped on Primon's forehead is a "prototype" version of the Autobot insignia. Although this is the only place it appears in-fiction, the symbol was later released as a sticker with Overcharge.

* Aaron Archer's original back-of-a-dinner-napkin outline for the Transformers Cybertron series included a character named "Alpha Prime", who in later drafts became Vector Prime.

Prima was created from the corpse of another robot which the Quintessons deactivated for its underperformance in its tasks. The robot was instantly smelted down and reformed into Prima, who, through unknown circumstances, became the second documented bearer of the Matrix of Leadership after Primon. Prima was unusual amongst his consumer goods brethren in that he was equipped for combat, and was made to battle in the Quintessons' gladiatorial pits. He found the endless fighting repellent, and, after a battle with Sentinel Major, decided to strike back at his masters, leaping at the group of Quintessons that had been watching the match. He was blasted out of the air, and fell to the ground in a smoking wreck, apparently deceased. He was succeeded as Matrix-bearer by Prime Nova.

When Rodimus Prime journeyed inside the Matrix, Prima was the second guide he encountered, and told him the story of the Quintessons' gladiatorial matches. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4
After Primus had imprisoned his and Unicron's astral forms in asteroids, he reshaped his new body into the planet Cybertron. From the material of this world was born the first Transformer, Prima. Prima and his fellow Transformers were given the gift of transformation, an ability that mirrored Unicron's own powers, so that one day they would be able unite against him and defeat him. Prima was given the Genetic Matrix, a powerful artifact endowed with Primus' own life essence, which would allow Prima to create further generations of Transformers. Primal Scream (issue) The Power and the Glory
Prima proposed to the Dynasty of Primes that they should make it a rule to not destroy the stars from systems with life. He also renamed the Fallen after the latter intentionally destroyed such a system. When the Fallen attempted this again on Earth, the original seven Primes battled him and fell one by one, until only Prima was left. Prima let the Fallen chase him around the planet until he was weakened by overusing space bridges, allowing Prima to gather his brothers' bodies and use their remaining power to banish the Fallen to his sarcophagus. Tales of the Fallen issue 4

Prima presumably created a tomb from his and his brothers' bodies to hide the Matrix of Leadership, giving his own spark to seal it from within. :Based upon the "Protoform" (Cybertronian) appearances of the Transformers in the Movie, Protoform Optimus Prime transforms into his "entry" mode. This mode somewhat resembles a cybertronic truck, with false wheels sculpted onto the sides and Optimus Prime's trademark windows in front. A flame decoration piece fits to the back of the "vehicle", creating the illusion of a flaming comet's tail. The bottom of the vehicle has small wheels to roll the toy across smooth surfaces. Oddly, it has NO automorph gimmick at all, a feature most main-line figures have.

:In robot mode, he resembles previous Optimus characters: His angular chest windows are reminiscent of Cybertron Optimus Prime, while his near-animalistic limbs and color scheme are evocative of Beast Wars Optimus Primal. He has excellent articulation due to his many ball joints, and is armed with a rifle. The flame attachment can fit onto the end of the (non-firing) gun barrel.

:Some packaging variants of this figure (perhaps a Wal-Mart exclusive) included a free movie poster depicting a Cybertronian eye overlooking Earth. Primon, the Alpha Prime, is one of the oldest known bearers of the Matrix. As he predated Prima, who is characterized as the first Transformer created on Cybertron, it is conceivable that he predates the planet itself (much like the Covenant).

Fiction
Generation 1 cartoon
:Voice actor: Michael Bell (English)

Primon is the earliest documented bearer of the Matrix of Leadership, but how he came to hold the talisman, and his activities during the Quintesson occupation of Cybertron, are unknown. His sole appearance came when Rodimus Prime voyaged into the Matrix in 2005, where he was the first guide the Autobot leader encountered. Primon related to him the story of the Transformers' creation by the Quintessons, and how they were endowed with sentience. He was succeeded as Matrix-bearer by Prima. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4

Tales from the Beast Wars
Primon was seen twice in a swirl of visions experienced by the Covenant at the coming of the Chronarchitect—once as part of a long lineage of Primes, and again having the Matrix torn from his chest by the Liege Maximo. Reaching the Omega Point

Dreamwave comics continuity

Primon, the Alpha Prime, is one of the oldest known bearers of the Matrix. As he predated Prima, who is characterized as the first Transformer created on Cybertron, it is conceivable that he predates the planet itself (much like the Covenant).

The entity known only as It resides in the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. The exact relationship of It to the Matrix is unknown, although It was probably an Autobot in life. It may be the chronologically earliest being to have merged with the Matrix.

After being injured on Chaar, Rodimus Prime experienced a bizarre (probably metaphorical) vision. He saw the physical form of It, which shattered, releasing a dark destructive presence that destroyed a sequence of ancient Cybertronians before fading to reveal the eerily-similar face of a Quintesson Judge, which also shattered. Five Faces of Darkness, Part 2

When the Hate Plague threatened to infect all life in the universe, Optimus Prime made a desperate mental trip into the Matrix in search of a cure. After speaking with Alpha Trion, Optimus Prime encountered It, which told him of the Matrix's previous exposure to the Hate Plague. At that time, a wise man was able to contain the plague's spores and seal them within a star, but no one person had enough wisdom to destroy the plague completely. Optimus Prime gambled that the accumulated wisdom contained within the Matrix itself would be enough, and released it, which indeed destroyed the Hate Plague. The Return of Optimus Prime, Part 2

Whether the essence of It remains in the Matrix or was lost when Optimus opened it is unknown.
