Soundwave
:Soundwave is a Decepticon from the Transformers: Prime continuity family.

Soundwave was one of Megatron's earliest followers and, many believe, instrumental to his rise. He is a master spy, using surveillance equipment and a veritable army of Minicon minions (some of which nest inside his own body) to learn everything there is to know about his allies and his enemies. He makes it his business to know exactly what is happening, where, and when and his Minicons inevitably help to turn this information to the advantage of Megatron... and Soundwave himself.

Fiction
Exodus: The History of the War for Cybertron
Soundwave was a gladiator from Kaon who almost bested Megatron in combat, an act that created mutual respect between the two. Soundwave saw in Megatron a desire to return to the swashbuckling spirit of the Golden Age of Cybertron, when Cybertronians emerged from the Well of All Sparks having to escape from the Underworld's monsters rather than being put into a caste. He was appointed Megatron's lieutenant with Shockwave. Though Megatron despised Minicons, Soundwave insisted on having them around to spy on their gladiators, including the time when Megatron's librarian friend Orion Pax came to visit. He was suspicious of Orion and even asked permission from Megatron to tail him as he returned to Iacon.

After Decepticons bombed Cybertron in Megatron's name, Soundwave sent Frenzy and Rumble to search for the Matrix of Leadership in Crystal City (a place which design he always found self indulgent). Soundwave was not sure whether he should have bothered, as he was not superstitious and wondered what use a piece of a broken sword could be. Instead he got chilling indications Crystal City's scientists were planning to revive Omega Supreme.

Soundwave attended Orion and Megatron's hearing before the High Council. During this meeting, Soundwave helped to sow discord and tension by loudly shouting his complaints over security breaches that, in truth, he himself had caused. The Council noted that they were aware someone had tried to find the Matrix, and they appointed Orion Prime and requested he find it. This tore Orion and Megatron's movement in two.

During the final days of the war, Soundwave and his minions' research changed the fate of Cybertron. It was they who found the areas of the DataNet that Alpha Trion had overlooked and not deleted, revealing the existence of Dark Energon on Trypticon Station. It was he who remembered the Geosynchronous Energon Bridge below Crystal City that allowed for the mass transportation of Dark Energon between Cybertron and Trypticon. And it was the evidence he got from Rumble and Frenzy when they infiltrated Crystal City that revealed the existence of the Plasma Energy Chamber and its two Code Keys, which enabled Megatron to poison the Core of Cybertron.

When Optimus removed the Chamber from the Core, beginning the planet's slow healing process, Soundwave boarded the Nemesis with Megatron, Starscream and Lugnut to pursue the Autobot Ark into the unknown reaches of space. Exodus: The Official History of the War for Cybertron
:Voice actor: Isaac C. Singleton Jr. (English), Claudio Moneta (Italian)

Soundwave took control of the orbital station Starscream was posted at, helping Megatron to reach the Dark Energon by establishing a forward base within the station. He then directed Megatron to a Data Matrix Center in order to find a route to the Dark Energon that had not been blocked by Starscream.

Later, Soundwave notified Megatron that access to the core was impossible, as it was guarded by the Omega Gate. He and Breakdown accompanied Megatron as they led the assault on Iacon, through which they would find and take the Omega Key, opening the Omega Gate and allowing the core to be infused with Dark Energon. On their way to the Stellar Galleries, Soundwave reported snipers, and after taking them down, Megatron infused the entrance with Dark Energon and took his team into the security station. Soundwave noticed that the batteries fed the security grid, and the trio infused each of them with Dark Energon, deactivating the security measures. Soundwave then detected the Omega Key behind their next door, and after opening it, the Decepticons arrived at the Stellar Galleries. They opened the container, finding not the key, but a message from Zeta Prime, who announced that he had taken the Omega Key, anticipating Megatron's plan. Zeta sent Autobot attack forces against them, but they were swiftly taken down. Megatron ordered Soundwave to trace Zeta Prime's broadcast, and Soundwave found it came from 12.7 cycles ahead. He then noted a weak wall, and the Decepticons broke it down and entered the cities' subsystems, providing a direct route to Zeta, and the Omega Key.

The group descended down a shaft and went through a tunnel, avoiding trains on the way, and after breaking down a door in a ventilation area, they were ambushed by Autobot cloakers. Soundwave dispatched them and infused Dark Energon into the batteries. Megatron congratulated him, and then ordered him to unlock the exit. Soundwave obliged, and the trio found themselves in another tunnel. Breakdown challenged Soundwave to a race, to which the Decepticon responded, in his trademark monotone, "Negative." Tough crowd. Rushing through the tunnel, this time full of moving trains, the group came to a station where they infiltrated Iacon's lower levels. Soundwave detected the Omega Key at last, and suggested proceeding through the logistics station. Roughing it through the Autobot attackers, Soundwave finally determined that the key was beyond the train tunnels.

Soundwave and his teammates arrived at Iacon's main streets, where they met up with Brawl outside of Zeta Prime's vaults, which were impervious to the small amount of Dark Energon Megatron was capable of channeling. After Megatron's squad helped Brawl clear the area, Brawl called in the Dark Energon bombers, but they were spectacularly shot down by the planetary guns. Brawl suggested disabling them, and Soundwave assisted in carrying out the plan. Autobots advanced all around, but Soundwave and the others managed to hold them off until the next wave of bombers arrived, clearing the street and destroying the Vault doors. Soundwave joined the others on their way to the entrance, but the squad was intercepted by a Destroyer. Soundwave and Barricade split from Megatron to flank him, and eventually they rendered him non-functional. Inside the vault, they avoided Zeta's traps and finally reached the Omega Key--but it too was a trap. Zeta then attacked them, using a giant hologram and controlling the chamber to his advantage, dropping the ceiling and sending holographic brutes to attack for him while safe within an impenetrable energy shield. (Even during the battle, Soundwave was impressed by the creation of endless energon clones, to which Breakdown responded, roughly, "NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRD!") Soundwave's dorkiness proved useful in discerning the weakness of Zeta's machines--that the core rapidly overheated after prolonged use, and needed to open up in order to cool, rendering it vulnerable to attack. After the battle, Megatron plucked from Zeta's hand the "key"...which started to blink its lights and chirp. Zeta Prime informed them that the "key" he was actually a device that activated the real key: Omega Supreme.

As the three Decepticons flew away to track Omega, Soundwave noticed that the "key" was coming for them. Omega Supreme attacked, and thrust the Decepticons' ship into a wall. Crash-landing, Megatron had a change of plans; force Omega Supreme to open the Omega Gate. Soundwave noticed a Decepticon drop ship across the bridge, but when the squad went to investigate, Omega Supreme intercepted them. Soundwave reported that his weapons were ineffective; Megatron told his soldiers to destroy the bridge supports, causing Omega Supreme's vast bulk to collapse it. But he transformed to his ship mode, flew back up, and forced the Decepticons to retreat inside. In a frenzy, Breakdown noted that the next door was locked, and Soundwave proposed that Dark Energon could open the door, which it did. Inside, Soundwave picked up a transmission from Starscream, who announced that he would be replacing the "deceased" Megatron as Decepticon leader. Enraged, Megatron threatened Starscream, but Soundwave informed his leader that communication to the surface had been cut off, so Starscream could not hear him.

The trio arrived at the lift, but found it to be locked down. Breaking the locks got the lift back to working condition, but on their way up, Omega Supreme returned and blasted it, forcing the Decepticons down the shaft at breakneck speed. Omega was still out there, so the emergency brakes' destruction was the Decepticons' only hope. At the bottom, they continued their journey to find a way to fight Omega Supreme--Soundwave noted that at the top of the tower were several heavy weapons emplacements which could at least theoretically damage Omega--but Omega Supreme didn't know the meaning of the word quit. (He really doesn't; not much in the processor department.) He grabbed the Decepticons, but Soundwave helped out in shooting Omega Supreme's hand, forcing him relinquishing the three from his grasp. They retreated inside a fortified Autobot position, and in order to prevent detection, Soundwave jammed their signals. Slaying the Autobots inside who dared attempt to counterattack, Soundwave unlocked the exit, which only let in more Autobots. They too, met their demise, but as Soundwave and his comrades escaped, he noticed that the Autobots' security was countering the effects of Dark Energon. Destroying the sentries turned to be a worthwhile solution, but then the Decepticons had to deal with Omega Supreme mining road. Soundwave's sensors indicated the presence of a bridge nearby, and though Breakdown was unsure, Megatron was willing to follow Soundwave's advice. Once again, Omega Supreme continued to stalk them, but Soundwave led his group to an alternate route...a dead end, to be precise, which Megatron was irritated with. Soundwave revealed that breaking a structurally-weak sealed doorway nearby took them to Iacon maintenance tunnels leading straight to the bridge terminal. When they arrived through the power conduits, Soundwave and the others fought through more Autobots and finally activated the bridge.

Racing across the bridge, they barely avoided Omega Supreme's pursuit, and Soundwave located another cargo lift that would transport them straight to the heavy ion turrets. On the lift he picked up several Autobot/Decepticon signals, a sign they were approaching the battle on the surface. Soundwave participated in the slugfest, and his analysis proved that the turrets nearby had enough firepower to legitimately damage Omega Supreme. Then, he showed no mercy using the turrets to breach Omega's armour and finally topple him to the ground below.

Soundwave, Breakdown, and Megatron followed Omega, and at the bottom, they were surprised to see him survive and transform into his mighty robot mode. Soundwave noted that energon batteries produced from within Cybertron were the source of Omega's limitless endurance, and further advised the team on battling Omega; avoiding his tractor beams would allow them to live, and his turrets were vulnerable, making them the prime target. When the turrets were blown, Soundwave saw that the batteries were being used to repair them, and so it became an objective to corrupt them with Dark Energon. When Omega Supreme used the batteries to heal himself, he was instead weakened, allowing the Decepticons to critically injure him. Omega Supreme was still alive even after all of that, but much weaker. Soundwave observed that his chest plating had been damaged, and Megatron ordered Soundwave and Breakdown to blast it, and Omega Supreme fell at last. Soundwave advised Megatron that now would be a good time to corrupt Omega with Dark Energon, but Megatron told Captain Obvious to shut up and did as he would have done even if Soundwave hadn't brought it up, laughing all the way.

After Cybertron's Core had been infected with Dark Energon, Soundwave was reassigned as head of Kaon's prison, and watched over (i.e., tortured) Zeta Prime in his spare time. Optimus, Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Air Raid led an Autobot breakout and battled Soundwave's minions Frenzy, Rumble and Laserbeak. Soundwave himself sustained heavy damage leaving the safety of his position to revive and retrieve each Minicon, showing uncharaceristic concern for other living beings. Eventually, defeated and critically damaged, Soundwave desperately attempted to restore himself by absorbing life force from Zeta's very own spark. His attempt to fully heal was halted by Optimus, who even took a shot from the Decepticon intended to finish off Prime. Although Soundwave and his minions fled, the damage had already been done and Zeta Prime expired moments later. Transformers: War for Cybertron (360/PS3/PC)
Slapper is a dim-witted thug, even by Predacon standards. He's just about smart enough to have a cruel sense of humor, enjoying the failures and injuries inflicted on his own teammates.

Megatron invited the Predacon trio to the battlefield in New York, where they fought over who was going to defeat Optimus Prime. When the Autobot Brothers arrived, Slapper attempted to fight X-Brawn and was told to measure his tongue while the Autobot ascended to the top of a building and strafed him from above. Once Doctor Onishi was in Megatron's grasp, the trio were blown into the sky by Side Burn's missile. Battle Protocol!

When the Predacons brought back a pile of small batteries to use as energy, Megatron was not impressed and put Sky-Byte in charge of them on a mission to retrieve an explosive device. The trio found the car and prepared to take it to Megatron, but Sky-Byte destroyed the car and took the bomb. The shark was himself intercepted by X-Brawn, who inadvertently activated the device, causing the three Predacons to flee. Back at base, they observed Sky-Byte trying to work out how to understand humans by reading their literature. An Explosive Situation

Slapper destroyed a freight train and found himself mocked by Sky-Byte for being useless. Sky-Byte aimed to attack the super-advanced Linear RFG train instead. To that end, Slapper and Gas Skunk planted a pulsar bomb on a bridge on the bullet train's course, and found themselves fighting both the Autobot Brothers and Optimus Prime. Although they were eventually chased off, they succeeded in destroying the bridge, forcing the Autobots to save the train. Bullet Train to the Rescue

After a failed attempt to steal the Plutonium Energy Generator from a building, the Predacon trio tried again while the generator was being transported by truck. Slapper hacked into the traffic control computer and caused a city-wide traffic jam. After chasing off the truck drivers, Slapper and Gas Skunk picked up the generator (and Dark Scream) and made off with it. They ended up on the beach where the Spy Changers ran rings around them. Sky-Byte turned up and managed to blast the Spy Changers, allowing Slapper and Gas Skunk to spirit away the generator (lamenting that Sky-Byte never seemed to do the heavy lifting himself). Unfortunately when they got back to base, it turned out that the generator had been switched with a statue. Spychangers to the Rescue

Slapper and Gas Skunk worked on tapping some deep-sea power lines, with Slapper spoiling for a fight. As it turned out, when the Autobots turned up to foil their plan, Slapper didn't get to do any fighting anyway. The Hunt for Black Pyramid To distract the Autobots from Megatron's real plan, the Predacon trio attacked Metro City and kept Team Bullet Train busy. Slapper's suggestion for Gas Skunk to use his acid breath backfired when Railspike ignited the acid and Slapper and Dark Scream got flambéed. The Secret of the Ruins

After Side Burn was captured by Megatron, Sky-Byte and the Predacon trio ended up guarding the Autobot. Slapper asked Side Burn about his affection for red sports cars, and was suckered in by the Autobot's tall tales. Unsurprisingly he was also fooled by the vehicle disguises worn by Prowl and X-Brawn when they arrived to rescue Side Burn. Sideburn's Obsession

The three Predacons investigated a laboratory pointed to by information extracted from Doctor Onishi and Slapper stole a disk with his tongue. The disk contained information which the Predacons interpreted to indicate that a steam train was some sort of weapon and set about trying to steal the locomotive. Slapper jumped on the train after the failure of his two comrades, and was promptly jumped and pummelled by Midnight Express, who had formed an attachment to "Grandpa". After the train was successfully stolen, Slapper and Gas Skunk redirected it via a secondary rail line towards Megatron. Secret Weapon: D-5

Although the Spy Changers managed to foil the Predacons' attempted theft of a ruby, Gas Skunk managed to sneak a bug onto Mirage. The Predacons listened keenly as Mirage appeared to fall out with the other Autobots and convinced Megatron that they should let Mirage join them. Unfortunately, the defection turned out to be a ruse anyway. Mirage's Betrayal

The Autobots entered the Great Race to locate one of their comrades who'd gone missing. The Predacon trio attempted to drop a rock-slide on the Autobot forces, and were taken aback when Optimus leapt from boulder to boulder to reach the cliff-top they were on. The trio swiftly fled. Skid Z's Choice

After spying new Autobot Tow-Line and his overzealousness in towing illegally parked vehicles, the Predacon trio captured the Autobot and set about trying to brainwash him. Slapper attempted to hypnotise Tow-Line with a swinging pendant, but only succeeded in putting himself to sleep. Gas Skunk recommended using a metronome... which also put Slapper to sleep. Eventually they managed to brainwash Tow-Line with a disc, and sat back while he began abducting Autobots from around the city. Unfortunately a malfunction meant Tow-Line dropped off the captives at the wrong location, and by the time the Predacons located him, Optimus Prime and Prowl had already cured him of the rogue programming. Tow-Line Goes Haywire

The Predacons were again misled by information obtained from Doctor Onishi, leading them to think there was a transforming statue. Slapper attempted to get a statue to transform, but was chased off by the Autobots. Sky-Byte and the Predacon trio found the Cave of the Dragon finally, and were frightened off by a ruse of the Autobots to make them believe that the transforming robot was hostile. The Ultimate Robot Warrior

Not all of Doctor Onishi's information was unhelpful. The Predacons were sent to Castle Peak in America, where they began digging and unearthed a crashed Autobot spaceship. After Megatron retrieved the six protoforms from inside it, he impressed the Predacons with his plan to imbue them with code from his own spark, although Slapper got somewhat too carried away with the adjectives. The Predacons began scanning new vehicle modes for the protoforms, creating the Decepticons. The Decepticons Unfortunately this development left the Predacons as second-stringers to the new troops. Sky-Byte came up with the idea to disguise themselves to get the Decepticons and Autobots to destroy each other. With typical finesse all four of them picked Optimus Prime to dress up as, but the Decepticons and Autobots ended up fighting anyway. Commandos

Digging under the volcano on Montrose Island, the three Predacons were first assaulted by some bats, then chased by molten lava. They eventually reached the ocean, and were forced to dive when the lava followed them over the cliff. Volcano On a later mission, Sky-Byte had the trio attempt to draw Megatron's face in the ground to indicate a rendezvous point. They did get to fight X-Brawn though. Attack from Outer Space

Slapper caught Sky-Byte hogging the computer to do on-line fish tests, and pointed out that frogs eat jellyfish (to which the retort was that sharks eat brainless toads). Sky-Byte's latest plan involved the Predacons disguising themselves as Autobots so Slapper disguised himself as Side Burn. When this plan failed, Slapper jokingly suggested Sky-Byte should tell the Autobots where the Decepticons were planning to attack, and was taken seriously. The Autobots distrusted Sky-Byte, naturally, until Slapper got the shark to do the "Universal Greeting Dance". Although the new plan ultimately failed as well, Slapper decided it was worth it to see Sky-Byte bark like a seal. Gas Skunk ventured the opinion that he needed to get a life. The Fish Test

Sky-Byte and the three Predacons raided a diamond mine in Antarctica in order to lure the Autobots into a trap. The Build Team turned up instead of the expected Autobot Brothers, but Sky-Byte took their leader, Wedge captive. The Build Team tried to exchange him for a disk with a map of the Global Space Bridge and, after a chase with a penguin, the Predacons obtained their prize. Unfortunately it turned out to just be a map of some sewers. Wedge's Short Fuse

Sucked into another of Sky-Byte's plans to attack the CGA Tower, the Predacon trio instead found themselves holding the building up after the shark had an abrupt change of plans and insisted everyone save the hostages. Much complaining ensued. In the end the tower was saved, but the Predacons realised they still hadn't gotten the O-Parts Sky-Byte was after. Sky-Byte Saves the Day

The Predacon trio were put in charge of guarding the Autobot Brothers after their capture. They didn't last very long when the newly-arrived Ultra Magnus came to the Autobots' rescue. The Two Faces of Ultra Magnus

Hiding in some bushes, the Predacons observed the failure of one of Scourge's plans and observed that he was still Megatron's favourite. They attempted to join the battle only to flee when Optimus and Ultra Magnus merged to become Omega Prime. Power to Burn!

During the Autobots' hunt for the O-Parts, Slapper helped Sky-Byte attempt to hide fake O-Parts. The toad was not of a lot of help, not being able to tell the fake ones from the real ones. He asked if he could keep the fake ones anyway, since they were kinda cool. He sensibly sat out the rest of the plans and let Sky-Byte make a fool of himself on his own. A Friendly Contest

The Predacon trio accompanied Megatron and the Decepticons to the Sahara to recover the Orb of Sigma. Their main contribution was to attempt to flee when the cavern in which the Orb was located began to collapse, and subsequently became buried under rubble. They were able to dig themselves out, only to find their energy being drained by a mysterious force. Peril from the Past This didn't seem to slow them down, as they were hanging out with Sky-Byte again soon after the Autobots found Cerebros, and were able to snatch the 'bot while the Decepticons kept the Autobots busy. Although they turned up to the battle in Metro City to claim Fortress Maximus, their contribution to the fight was minimal. Maximus Emerges

With the Decepticons' treachery taking them out of favour with Galvatron (as Megatron had become), the Predacons found themselves moving up in the hierarchy finally. They took part in the attack on the Autobot base, and were lured into a trap by Optimus Prime. The trio wisely took shelter once the Megastar turned up to add its fire-power to the fight, but the battle station was soon destroyed by Fortress Maximus. Surprise Attack! They continued to contribute little to the ongoing battle, and ended up following Sky-Byte into the space bridge when he and the Decepticons pursued the retreating Autobots in. Thus they were subsequently also trapped when Galvatron flooded the tunnel with molten lava. Galvatron's Revenge Fortunately for them, they survived and went on to face the Autobots again (and were swiftly trampled into the dirt).

After the defeat of Galvatron and his Decepticons, Slapper, Gas Skunk and Dark Scream were rounded up and shipped off to an asteroid prison colony on board Fortress Maximus. As all the other villains argued and shrieked vengeance from within their Phantom Zone-like prison cells, the Predacon trio lamented that Sky-Byte had been left stranded on Earth; a fate they considered worse than incarceration. The Final Battle (RID)
Ultra Magnus...to the Rescue?
When Megatron ordered Sky-Byte and Scourge to steal an experimental nuclear generator from the humans, it became a competition between the Predacons and Decepticons to see who could grab the glory for the mission. Despite this, Slapper still managed to be rather bumbling, letting his tongue out too far for other 'Cons to step on or trip over. Once the Autobots arrived, at battle was joined, but Slapper's swollen tongue was no match for Optimus Prime. Eventually, Scourge called off the fight by threatening an innocent human life dangling from a ledge. Not wanting to see innocents hurt, Sky-Byte ordered Slapper and Gas Skunk to "innocently" carry the generator past Scourge at a critical moment, spoiling his aim and giving Prime and Ultra Magnus a chance to punch his clock. Slapp then flew off on Sky-Byte's fin, the Predacons having successfully stolen the generator while Scourge was fooling around with the Autobots. Ultra Magnus...to the Rescue?
Slapper was part of the coalition army that fought back the Quintesson invasion of the recently reformatted technorganic Cybertron. He and Stampy leapt onto an escaping dropship and planted bombs on it, leaping to safety before the bombs exploded and brought the ship back down to the surface. Wreckers: Finale Part II

*According to the Car Robots toy catalog, Dark Scream, Gas Skunk and Slapper make up a subgroup known as the "3 Metal Beast Brothers" (メタルビースト３兄弟 Metaru Bīsuto 3 Kyōdai). Apparently, Takara's intent was to have them parallel the deluxe "Three Car Robot Brothers" (as Prowl, Side Burn, and X-Brawn were called in Japan), but both the Japanese and American versions of the cartoon ignored them having any sort of familial relationship.

*In England his name is a very rude name to call a woman (a modern pseudonym of Slag) though why Slag was considered inappropriate while slapper was okay to use in the UK is unknown.

*According to Fox Kids's (now defunct) website, the name of Slapper's, Dark Scream's, and Gas Skunk's three-member team is the "Predacon Field Squadron". Where this name came from is unknown, as it wasn't used in the Robots in Disguise TV series dub at all. All that's known about it is that Slapper is its third member, meaning Gas Skunk and Dark Scream are the first and second (but exactly who is the first and who is the second is not known).

*Hasbro considered using the name "Wartoad" for Slapper before release.

* In the Japanese version, Slapper speaks with a Kansai dialect, sort of the Japanese equivalent of "old-fashioned, backwoods goofus". Think hillbillies with a fixation on money.

* Early plans for the Wreckers comics called for Guushar to join their ranks. However, these plans pre-dated the importing of Car Robots to the West, and when those plans were made known, 3H replaced Guushar with the original version of the toy mold, Spittor. This also mandated a hasty change to the coloration of the promotional group-shot. Traces of the original coloration can still be seen in the final version, such as Spittor's hands being a lighter blue than the rest of his arms. Ultimately, Slapper did make an appearance in Wreckers, though not as part of the titular group.

* Slapper's tongue is 42 feet, 3 inches long. He measured it himself in "Battle Protocol!".
