After the Exodus crashed on Earth, Knock Out lay dormant until the Decepticons recovered him on an undisclosed mission. Along with the rest of the Land Military Team and several other Mini-Cons, he was chosen to help Megatron eliminate Optimus Prime once and for all. By setting up a series of warp gate passages around the globe, Megatron and the Mini-Cons lured the Autobots into following them, and then scattered the enemy forces between the various warp points, leaving Optimus to face Megatron alone, with only Rad and Fred at his side.

Knock Out and the Land Military Team were interested in peace, however -- they had sent an message to the Street Action Team earlier that day, seeking a resolution. Despite their misgivings, they continued to carry out Megatron's plan until Optimus Prime passively submitted himself to their missile fire. Impressed by his actions, Knock Out and the other Mini-Cons turned against Megatron, and returned to the Autobot headquarters with Prime. Vow

Knock Out and the Mini-Cons all chose to willingly follow the Autobots into space aboard the Axalon, fighting alongside them against the Decepticons. Depart

Dreamwave Armada comic
Knock Out and the Land Military Team were captured and altered by the Decepticons to be used as weapons of conquest millions of years ago. They escaped aboard the Exodus with most other Mini-Cons, and declared themselves free agents upon reactivating on Earth a million years later. Following a signal from a Mini-Con panic pager, the Land Militaty Team found Alexis, Carlos and Rad, and Knock Out demanded to know where they got the pager. The three humans explained that they got it from their Mini-Con friends who were stuck in the Decepticon base, and asked the Land Military Team to save them. They initially refused, but soon came around and helped out, then participated in a battle against the Decepticons while they were at it. They still didn't join the Autobots, though, and drove off when everything was said and done. Dreamwave Armada issue 7

A while later, the Land Military Team and the rest of the Mini-Cons on Earth were summoned to a starship which took them all to the moon. Dreamwave Armada issue 8 They were imprisoned by Destruction Mini-Con Team on their moonbase, which really grinded Knock Out's gears. Dreamwave Armada issue 9 The Land Military Team soon realized that living on the moonbase wasn't so bad after all, but not everyone agreed with them. Knock Out got into a fight with Jolt for being all snarky about the situation, but it was broken up by Wreckage. The base was later attacked by the Decepticons, so Knock Out and the others had to evacuate it anyway. Dreamwave Armada issue 11

Following this misadventure, the Land Military Team seemingly stayed with the Autobots. Worlds Collide, Part 3 of 4 They were instrumental in separating Star Saber from Megatron's grip after he used it to destroy the invading Galvatron. Worlds Collide, Part 4 of 4

Finally, Knock Out joined with all other active Mini-Cons in returning to Cybertron and activating Over-Run's Mini-Con Matrix, incapacitating Unicron and leading to his destruction. The End

Panini Armada comic
After crashing on Earth in the distant past, Knock Out and his teammates were discovered in 1959 during the construction of a casino in Las Vegas. They were recovered by the US government and subsequently converted into remote-control military equipment by the Extra-Terrestrial Response Division. A few hours after a field test, the three Mini-Cons overrode ERTD's control and drove to the nearby town of Stillwater. They were soon recaptured, but Wreckage had managed to leave a message to Amos Hume. Panini Armada issue 6

After the ETRD's funding was cut decades later, former technicians Quint and Hathaway attempted to auction the Mini-Cons off. The transaction was interrupted by the arrival of an Autobot shuttle carrying the Air Defense Team and their human friends, whom Hume had contacted upon seeing images of the Transformers on television. Knock Out and the others were freed, and presumably joined the Autobots. Panini Armada issue 7

Timelines
During the Unicron Singularity crisis, the Land Military Mini-Con Team served aboard the Autobot flagship Iron Hope. They were called into action during a Decepticon attack on the ship and battled a number of Divebomb- and Insecticon-type Terrorcons alongside Riptide, Smokescreen and Ironhide. Force of Habit
Armada cartoon continuity
Downshift was a rare occasion among the Mini-Cons on Earth, as he activated himself and scanned a vehicle mode all without imprinting on a bulk Transformer first. Whereas most missions were little more than a scavenger hunt by both sides to find an inert panel, Downshift had to be actively chased down by both sides. The Decepticons and the arrogant Autobot officer Blurr were willing to shoot the fleeing Mini-Con into submission; only Hot Shot fought to protect Downshift and offer him a choice to work with the Autobots. Despite Hot Shot's efforts on Downshift's behalf, however, the Mini-Con was snatched from his grasp by Cyclonus, who teleported back to the Decepticon base on the moon. There, Downshift reunited with Mirage and Dirt Boss to form the Skyboom Shield for the first time in untold centuries. Reinforcement

In the next battle, Megatron assembled both the Air Defense Team and the Race Team into the two most powerful weapons in the universe. Armed with both the Star Saber and the Skyboom Shield, he toyed with Optimus Prime until his overconfidence caused him to lose his grip on the Shield. Prime's Mini-Con partner Sparkplug then "locked on" to the Skyboom Shield and brought it under Prime's control, thwarting Megatron's killing strike with the Saber and balancing the powers between the two sides. Decisive Battle

Because the Skyboom Shield was in such demand by the Autobots to protect them from the Star Saber (and later the Requiem Blaster), Downshift and the Race Team appeared quite infrequently as individuals. One day, they went for a walk with the kids to catch some fresh air. Unfortunately, their little stroll happened just as Billy and Fred reported that Thrust had met with Starscream. Squidhead had asked for the Skyboom Shield Mini-Cons as collateral for letting Starscream back into the Decepticons, so their sudden disappearance from the base didn't look too good for the former Decepticon. The Autobots' distrust for Starscream in part led to his decision to take Thrust up on his offer, and so even after Hot Shot uncovered the kids and the Race Team and cleared his name, Starscream stole the Skyboom Shield for Megatron and returned to the Decepticons. Crack

Downshift and the Race Team had little time to act as individuals after that, remaining powerlinxed as the Skyboom Shield while the Decepticons used the shield as one-third of the Hydra Cannon, before it was stolen by Thrust and used to provide power to the heart of Unicron. Mirage, Dirt Boss and Downshift reawakened as individuals with the help of High Wire and the Street Action Team, who had journeyed to Unicron's core with Optimus Prime, Galvatron and the Earth children to grant the super-weapon Mini-Cons their freedom. Origin Downshift fled Unicron aboard the Autobot Jetfire just before the Chaos-Bringer was finally destroyed. Mortal Combat
Upon arrival, they found Thrust unconscious, while Cyclonus was stronger and crazier than ever. Downshift and his team failed to harm him, but luckily Optimus Prime was around. Dreamwave Armada issue 13

Later, the Race Team joined the rest of the Earthbound Mini-Cons in traveling back to Cybertron, which was under attack by Unicron. They were presumably part of the Mini-Con Matrix ceremony at the Loop, which caused Unicron some major damage. The End
* Hasbro copy writer Forest Lee confirms that the Cybertron Tiny Tins exclusives were originally planned with two different Race Team decos in mind, hence the backstory involving one version of the Team being from an alternate universe and the Tins' decos showing the Mini-Cons in silhouette rather than the normal full-color images. He could not confirm what the then-chosen decos were, however.
:Downshift is a Mini-Con from the Armada portion of the Unicron Trilogy continuity family.

Downshift used to be a real jerk. A speed-demon race champion among the Mini-Cons, there was a time when the fact that he wasn't the absolute #1 would have chapped his lugnuts. He's matured since then, however, and has dedicated himself to fighting for Mini-Con freedom rather than personal glory.

However, some lines of that old bad code still linger in his system. Should the Skyboom shield fall into Decepticon hands and remain there for too long, the corrupting influence can affect all three members of the Race Mini-Con Team even after they disengage, and the selfish, boastful, uber-competitive Downshift resurfaces. While the effect is only temporary, it's not something anyone on the Team wants to go through.
Fiction

Dreamwave Armada comics
Downshift and the other Race Team members were captured early on in the Decepticons' Mini-Con kidnapping spree. Dreamwave Armada issue 1 Alongside many other Mini-Cons, they escaped captivity and made it to Earth's moon, where they lived in peace for some time. Eventually, the Decepticons found them and attacked their home, and Downshift and the others were forced to flee to Earth. Dreamwave Armada issue 11 The Race Team subsequently allied themselves with the Autobots, and traveled to Alaska to assist the Adventure Team, who were up against Thrust and Cyclonus.

The End

Cybertron toy bios
Meanwhile, an alternate-universe version of Downshift fell through a rip in space-time and landed on Velocitron. He was found by the criminal Dirt Boss, who enslaved the Mini-Con and used his power-boost to terrorize Velocitron's equatorial cities.

Man. Downshifts just can't catch a break.

Sonar's Mini-Con panel was lost in the underwater ruins of an ancient civilization for millennia before Megatron uncovered it. Despite all his efforts, however, the Decepticon leader could not activate the Mini-Con without his two brothers. Ruin Once the other two Air Defense Team were recovered (albeit, by the Autobots), Megatron's activation signal finally brought Sonar on-line. Prehistory

Using Sonar as a guide, Megatron was able to track down the other members of his trio and pinpoint the Autobot base. When they came into the presence of Jetstorm and Runway, Megatron and Sonar were able to activate the other two and forge the Star Saber for the first time in millennia. Before Megatron could fully powerlinx with the sword, however, it was knocked from his hand and fell into Hot Shot's grasp. Hot Shot had the Star Saber scan his image, and so he became the primary wielder of the most powerful weapon in the galaxy. Swoop (episode)
Hot Shot continued to partner with Sonar and his comrades, using the Star Saber at every available opportunity.
Sonar and the others soon exchanged hands, however, thanks to a carefully orchestrated plot by the turncoat, Sideways. After tricking Hot Shot into traveling to the Decepticon base on the moon, Sideways got him to relinquish control of the Star Saber long enough for Starscream to powerlinx with the trio instead, claiming the sword as his own. Credulous The Decepticons celebrated a streak of victories after claiming the Star Saber, although Megatron wasn't satisfied until he manipulated Starscream into giving over personal control of the Star Saber to him. Conspiracy Megatron used Sonar and his comrades in battle at every opportunity, relishing in the power he gained from the Star Saber. Even the mighty sword didn't stop Scavenger and Optimus Prime from humiliating him in one conflict, though. Trust (Armada)

Megatron continued to use his new sword in every battle that followed, so much so that Sonar and the others were rarely seen in their separate forms. After he gained the Skyboom Shield as well, Megatron attempted to destroy Optimus Prime once and for all by wielding the Air Defense Team and Race Team in battle at once. He failed, and ended up losing the shield to the Autobots. Decisive Battle

The Star Saber remained Megatron's favorite toy in battle, but the tide had truly turned once the Autobots took possession of the Skyboom Shield. Perhaps considering that methods other than brute force were needed, Megatron summoned the tactician Thrust to Earth. Thrust acquired the Air Military Team, who supplemented Sonar and the Air Defense Team as a considerable air force. This marked the first occasion where Megatron allowed others to use the Defense Team since swiping them from Starscream, and utilizing them as individuals instead of just as the sword. Thrust used Sonar and the others in a trap for the Autobots at the bottom of a deep ravine, and the Decepticons only lost due to the timely arrival of Jetfire. Tactician

Thrust and the Decepticon Mini-Con Air Force struck again in another airborne struggle, where Jetfire was confronted by nearly a dozen flying Decepticon and Mini-Con opponents, cut off from his ground-based comrades. Sonar, Runway and Jetstorm kept him distracted until Megatron summoned them to form the Star Saber against the other Autobots. Linkup With Thrust's tactical scenarios in full play, Sonar and the Air Defense Team continued to alternate between serving in the Decepticon Air Force and as Megatron's personal Star Saber. Desperate

After Megatron set his eyes on a new prize, the Requiem Blaster, he reluctantly passed off the Star Saber to Starscream as part of a plot to steal the Blaster from the Autobots. Starscream was given the sword to call the Autobots out for combat, but was soon abandoned on the battlefield when Thrust closed the warp field behind him, leaving Starscream alone and stranded in the midst of enemies. He tried to fight Optimus Prime with the Star Saber, but Prime continually refused to strike back, saying his only concern was the protection of the Mini-Cons. This apparently penetrated the processors of Sonar and the others, as the Star Saber powered down in Starscream's hands, and he couldn't get the blade to work for him any more against Optimus. Sacrifice

Battered and bruised, Starscream eventually made his way back to the Decepticon moon base with Sonar and the Air Defense Team in tow. Megatron off-handedly brushed off the fact that they deserted Starscream, and told him to get himself cleaned up. While rejuvenating in an energon bath, Starscream generously invited Runway, Sonar and Jetstorm to join him in the chamber. After Starscream overheard Megatron and Thrust plotting to further mistreat him, he abandoned the Decepticon cause and took the Air Defense Team with him. The Star Saber Mini-Cons reunited with the Autobots when Starscream joined his former enemies in the hopes of gaining revenge against Megatron. In fact, it was the concern that Sonar and the others showed for Starscream that helped convince Optimus Prime to accept Starscream into their ranks. Regeneration

After Starscream failed to revenge himself upon Megatron during a moon raid, he used the Star Saber to take out his fury on some rock formations around the Autobot base. Sonar and the other Mini-Cons tried to calm him down, but to no avail. Starscream brought the Star Saber with him on the next mission, to Mars, but he ignored the search for the Mini-Con because of his obsession with facing Megatron. Sonar and his partners had to seek out Jetfire to bring Starscream back in line with the mission. Mars (episode) When Starscream decided to return to the Decepticons, he brought Sonar and the Air Defense Team back with him as well, uniting the three Mini-Con super-weapons under Decepticon control. Crack

Sonar and the Air Defense Team had little time to act as individuals after that, remaining powerlinxed as the Star Saber while the Decepticons used the sword as one-third of the Hydra Cannon, before it was stolen by Sideways and used to provide power to the heart of Unicron. Runway, Sonar and Jetstorm reawakened as individuals with the help of High Wire and the Street Action Team, who had journeyed to Unicron's core with Optimus Prime, Galvatron and the Earth children to grant the super-weapon Mini-Cons their freedom. Origin Sonar fled Unicron aboard the Autobot Jetfire just before the Chaos-Bringer was finally destroyed. Mortal Combat

Dreamwave Armada comics
Sonar and his teammates were captured when the Decepticons attacked their hometown of Village B13, but they managed to escape Decepticon Headquarters. Taking refuge in the Garbage Disposal District, they salvaged an old starship which they planned to use to take all Mini-Cons to freedom. With some help from fellow escapee Sparkplug, they broke their fellow Mini-Cons out of the Decepticon base and made their way into space. Dreamwave Armada issue 2

While it was a good plan, the old ship malfunctioned and crashed on Earth, where the Mini-Cons lay dormant for a million years. Once a reactivation signal brought them back online, the Air Defense Team took up residence in Rapid City, where Sonar played chess with Runway while waiting for the latter to think of a new plan. Before long, they were found by the Decepticons, and Sonar made a run for it while frantically sending out an emergency signal to any other Mini-Cons out there. In the end, he was hunted down by Starscream, taken to the Decepticon base and forcibly combined with his teammates into the powerful Star Saber. Dreamwave Armada issue 6 Megatron used the sword to attack the Autobot base, but Optimus Prime took it from him and begged the Air Defense Team to fight Megatron's control and remember who they were. His pleas got through, and Sonar and his teammates separated and fought back against the Decepticons. They still didn't want to join the Autobots, though, and went back into hiding. Dreamwave Armada issue 7

Some time later, the Air Defense Team was summoned to a strange structure in Kansas. Mindlessly, they flew to to the structure and entered it, and it turned out to be a starship designed to bring them to the Moon. Dreamwave Armada issue 8 Sonar and Jetstorm were left imprisoned on Dualor's moonbase while Runway was taken on a tour around the place. Dreamwave Armada issue 9 Shortly after Runway was reunited with them, the Decepticons attacked the moonbase. Dreamwave Armada issue 10

Following the evacuation of the moonbase, Sonar and his teammates disappeared for a while. They returned when a larger threat than the Decepticons showed up in the form of a Herald of Unicron. Against their better judgment, the Air Defense Team came to Megatron's aid and combined into the Star Saber, allowing him to defeat his powerful opponent. Worlds Collide, Part 3 of 4 Thankfully, Megatron didn't get to keep his hold on the Star Saber, as the Land Military Mini-Con Team distracted him and allowed the Air Defense Team to separate and escape. Worlds Collide, Part 4 of 4

The Herald of Unicron was soon followed by Unicron himself, so all the Mini-Cons on Earth gathered to join the fight against him. After returning to Cybertron, Sonar joined the rest of the Mini-Cons in channeling their energies through the Mini-Con Matrix and heavily damaging Unicron. The End
Panini Armada comics
After awakening on Earth, Sonar and his team began performing various heroic deeds around the United States of America, such as saving climbers. After diverting a falling satellite from crashing in Chicago, they found that it had just been bait set by Starscream to capture them. The Decepticon grabbed Jetstorm, and Sonar and Runway fired on him to no avail. Thankfully, a group of Autobots arrived to save the team, but they still refused to join the Autobots. Panini Armada issue 5 Looking to get off Earth, the Air Defense Team regretfully decided that they had to steal human space technology. Sonar busted into a NASA facility, only to find several ERTD soldiers waiting for them. They quickly took out Runway, angering Sonar, but Jetstorm warned him against hurting the humans. Unwilling to fight back, the two remaining Mini-Cons were then incapacitated as well, and the Air Defense Team was moved to Area 54. Sonar woke up soon enough and rebooted Runway whilst Jetstorm hacked the ERTD's database. After learning that the humans had captured the Land Military Team as well, they escaped from Area 54. Panini Armada issue 5

Before long, Sonar and the others ran into Starscream again, and were promptly beaten up and captured. The Decepticon disengaged the team's personality chips and combined them into the legendary Star Saber, which he promptly used to assault the Street Action Team. However, Starscream didn't know only the will of the Air Defense Team members could keep the Star Saber's power in check, so without their personalities intact, the weapon quickly went out of control. As its power threatened to rip the Earth apart, Optimus Prime showed up and urged Sonar and the others to separate out of their own free will. His words reached them, and the planet was saved. Panini Armada issue 7 The Air Defense Team subsequently told the Autobots about the Mini-Cons captured by the ERTD and managed to track them down thanks to Amos Hume. They found that the humans were attempting to auction the Mini-Cons off, so Sonar and the others interrupted by disabling their technology with pulse disruptor beams. Panini Armada issue 7
Runway's Mini-Con storage panel was recovered from a volcanic island by the Autobots. His was the second of three Star Saber panels the Autobots had recovered, with Megatron having already found the third. Prehistory

Megatron used Sonar, his Air Defense Team Mini-Con, to track down the other members of his trio and pinpoint the Autobot base.

Hot Shot continued to partner with Runway and his comrades, using the Star Saber at every available opportunity. He used them to battle Starscream and Scavenger out in some grassy fields. Overmatch Next, he brought the Air Defense Team to the big city, and confronted Scavenger again before finally using the Star Saber to cleave through an entire highway, setting the mercenary up for a great big fall. Gale

Runway and the others soon exchanged hands, however, thanks to a carefully orchestrated plot by the turncoat, Sideways. Conspiracy Megatron used Runway and his comrades in battle at every opportunity, relishing in the power he gained from the Star Saber. Even the mighty sword didn't stop Scavenger and Optimus Prime from humiliating him in one conflict, though. Trust (Armada)

Megatron continued to use his new sword in every battle that followed, so much so that Runway and the others were rarely seen in their separate forms.

Thrust acquired the Air Military Team, who supplemented Runway and the Air Defense Team as a considerable air force. This marked the first occasion where Megatron allowed others to use the Defense Team since swiping them from Starscream, and utilizing them as individuals instead of just as the sword. Thrust used Runway and the others in a trap for the Autobots at the bottom of a deep ravine, and the Decepticons only lost due to the timely arrival of Jetfire.

Linkup With Thrust's tactical scenarios in full play, Runway and the Air Defense Team continued to alternate between serving in the Decepticon Air Force and as Megatron's personal Star Saber.

This apparently penetrated the processors of Runway and the others, as the Star Saber powered down in Starscream's hands, and he couldn't get the blade to work for him any more against Optimus. Sacrifice

Battered and bruised, Starscream eventually made his way back to the Decepticon moon base with Runway and the Air Defense Team in tow. In fact, it was the concern that Runway and the others showed for Starscream that helped convince Optimus Prime to accept Starscream into their ranks. Regeneration

After Starscream failed to revenge himself upon Megatron during a moon raid, he used the Star Saber to take out his fury on some rock formations around the Autobot base. Runway and the other Mini-Cons tried to calm him down, but to no avail. Starscream brought the Star Saber with him on the next mission, to Mars, but he ignored the search for the Mini-Con because of his obsession with facing Megatron. Runway and his partners had to seek out Jetfire to bring Starscream back in line with the mission. Mars (episode) When Starscream decided to return to the Decepticons, he brought Runway and the Air Defense Team back with him as well, uniting the three Mini-Con super-weapons under Decepticon control. Crack

Runway and the Air Defense Team had little time to act as individuals after that, remaining powerlinxed as the Star Saber while the Decepticons used the sword as one-third of the Hydra Cannon, before it was stolen by Sideways and used to provide power to the heart of Unicron. Runway, Sonar and Jetstorm reawakened as individuals with the help of High Wire and the Street Action Team, who had journeyed to Unicron's core with Optimus Prime, Galvatron and the Earth children to grant the super-weapon Mini-Cons their freedom. Origin Runway fled Unicron aboard the Autobot Jetfire just before the Chaos-Bringer was finally destroyed. Mortal Combat

Dreamwave Armada comics
Runway and his fellow team members, Jetstorm and Sonar, used to live in Mini-Con Village B13, one of the first to be attacked by the Decepticons. After managing to escape imprisonment in Decepticon Headquarters, they took refuge in the Garbage Disposal District, salvaged an old starship and thought up a plan to free their fellow Mini-Cons and leave the planet. To this end, they recruited Sparkplug after finding him injured near Village C52. The mission was a complete success, and the Air Defense Team successfully rescued all the Mini-Cons in the Decepticon base and left for the deep reaches of space. Unfortunately, their ship started malfunctioning shortly after takeoff. Dreamwave Armada issue 2

The ship crashed on Earth, and its occupants were left deactivated for roughly a million years. When the Air Defense Team woke up, they hid in a meat processing plant in Rapid City and began to plan for a way to get their war off this planet as well. Most of the planning was left to Runway, though, as Jetstorm and Sonar were incapable of creative thoughts. But it didn't matter in the end, as the Decepticons found them, captured them and forcibly combined them into the powerful Star Saber. Dreamwave Armada issue 6 Megatron used the sword to attack the Autobot base, but Optimus Prime took it from him and begged the Air Defense Team to fight Megatron's control and remember who they were. His pleas got through, and Runway and his teammates separated and fought back against the Decepticons.

Dreamwave Armada issue 8 They arrived at a fortress base constructed there by the Mini-Cons, and Runway, Sparkplug and Leader-1 were taken on an extended tour around the base by Dualor. Dreamwave Armada issue 9 The three were returned to the other "guests" just before the Decepticons attacked the base. Dreamwave Armada issue 10

Following the evacuation of the moonbase, Runway and his teammates disappeared for a while.

After returning to Cybertron, Runway joined the rest of the Mini-Cons in channeling their energies through the Mini-Con Matrix and heavily damaging Unicron. The End

Runway was among the Mini-Cons who ended up near Lincoln, Nebraska when their ship crashed, but he disappeared shortly after being reactivated. Panini Armada issue 3 Alongside his teammates, he began performing various heroic deeds around the country, such as diverting a falling satellite from crashing in Chicago. However, this accident turned out to be bait set by Starscream, who was out to capture the team. Runway and Sonar's firepower failed to affect him, but thankfully, they were saved by a team of Autobots. Panini Armada issue 5

The Air Defense Team wanted to get off Earth, and they decided that the best (if not the nicest) way to do it was to steal a human spaceship. But when they broke into a NASA facility, they found soldiers from the Extra-Terrestrial Response Division waiting for them. Before he could react, Runway was shot and incapacitated by the humans' "scramblers" and taken to Area 54 alongside his teammates. Unlike the others, he didn't wake up automatically, but had to have his auxiliary processor rebooted by Sonar. Meanwhile, Jetstorm found that the ERTD had captured another team of Mini-Cons, but the Air Defense Team was forced to flee the complex before they could do anything about it. Panini Armada issue 5

A while later, the Air Defense Team was again hunted down by Starscream, who had placed a tracer on Jetstorm during their last meeting. After defeating them in combat, the Decepticon disengaged their personality chips and combined them into the legendary Star Saber, which he promptly used to assault the Street Action Team. However, Starscream didn't know only the will of the Air Defense Team members could keep the Star Saber's power in check, so without their personalities intact, the weapon quickly went out of control. As its power threatened to rip the Earth apart, Optimus Prime showed up and urged Runway and the others to separate our of their own free will. His words reached them, and the planet was saved. Panini Armada issue 7 The Air Defense Team subsequently told the Autobots about the Mini-Cons captured by the ERDT and managed to track them down thanks to Amos Hume. As they found the Land Military Team, Runway told his comrades to disable the humans' technology with pulse disruptor beams. Panini Armada issue 7

: Cast entirely in blue and clear-blue plastics, this incarnation of the Air Defense Team is supposed to represent the Star Saber as it appears in the cartoon, with a glowing blue "energy blade". It was only available as a pack-in with the CD single of the Micron Legend cartoon ending theme, "Never Ending Road", by Psychic Lover.
Notes
* The Air Defense Team is the only one of the three "legendary Mini-Con weapons" Teams to appear in either of Armadas sequel-series.

* Runway and Jetstorm's names are reversed in the original Air Defense Team's instructions. Their names are also reversed in several licensed Armada print material, like the coloring and activity books put out by Bendon Publishing International, Inc., as well as in the DK Readers book "The Quest". Finally, it also happened on several occasions in the actual Armada television show. One of the few places it didn't happen was with the Dreamwave comics, but with the character's first appearance, the name was misspelled "Runaway". Fortunately, this didn't crop up again.
Runway is the de facto leader of the Air Defense Mini-Con Team, and also the most talkative of the three. Though reluctant to enter battle, he's an incredibly skilled and quick-witted commander. Given a little time, he can come up with some truly bizarrely-genius ploys that look suicidal at first, but really work out. Even though he's the brains and mouth of the Team, Runway trusts his teammates implicitly, and always looks to them before acting.

Linkup With Thrust's tactical scenarios in full play, Runway and the Air Defense Team continued to alternate between serving in the Decepticon Air Force and as Megatron's personal Star Saber.

After returning to Cybertron, Runway joined the rest of the Mini-Cons in channeling their energies through the Mini-Con Matrix and heavily damaging Unicron. The End
{{note|In the Panini comics, Runway's name and personality were switched with Jetstorm's (see Notes for more information).

Jetstorm's Mini-Con panel was found embedded in an Antarctic ice wall by Starscream. Before he could warp back to the moon, however, the panel was snagged by Red Alert. Back at base, the Autobots caught a brief glimpse of Jetstorm before his storage panel sent him back into a pre-programmed hibernation. Soldier (episode)

Eventually, the other two Air Defense Team panels were recovered by the Autobots and Decepticons, one apiece. Megatron then used Sonar to track down the other members of his trio and pinpoint the Autobot base.

Hot Shot continued to partner with Jetstorm and his comrades, using the Star Saber at every available opportunity. He used them to battle Starscream and Scavenger out in some grassy fields. Overmatch Next, he brought the Air Defense Team to the big city, and confronted Scavenger again before finally using the Star Saber to cleave through an entire highway, setting the mercenary up for a great big fall. Gale

Jetstorm and the others soon exchanged hands, however, thanks to a carefully orchestrated plot by the turncoat, Sideways. Conspiracy Megatron used Jetstorm and his comrades in battle at every opportunity, relishing in the power he gained from the Star Saber. Even the mighty sword didn't stop Scavenger and Optimus Prime from humiliating him in one conflict, though. Trust (Armada)

Megatron continued to use his new sword in every battle that followed, so much so that Jetstorm and the others were rarely seen in their separate forms.

Thrust acquired the Air Military Team, who supplemented Jetstorm and the Air Defense Team as a considerable air force.

Linkup With Thrust's tactical scenarios in full play, Jetstorm and the Air Defense Team continued to alternate between serving in the Decepticon Air Force and as Megatron's personal Star Saber.

This apparently penetrated the processors of Jetstorm and the others, as the Star Saber powered down in Starscream's hands, and he couldn't get the blade to work for him any more against Optimus. Sacrifice

Battered and bruised, Starscream eventually made his way back to the Decepticon moon base with Jetstorm and the Air Defense Team in tow. In fact, it was the concern that Jetstorm and the others showed for Starscream that helped convince Optimus Prime to accept Starscream into their ranks. Regeneration

After Starscream failed to revenge himself upon Megatron during a moon raid, he used the Star Saber to take out his fury on some rock formations around the Autobot base. Jetstorm and the other Mini-Cons tried to calm him down, but to no avail. Starscream brought the Star Saber with him on the next mission, to Mars, but he ignored the search for the Mini-Con because of his obsession with facing Megatron. Jetstorm and his partners had to seek out Jetfire to bring Starscream back in line with the mission. Mars (episode) When Starscream decided to return to the Decepticons, he brought Jetstorm and the Air Defense Team back with him as well, uniting the three Mini-Con super-weapons under Decepticon control. Crack

Jetstorm and the Air Defense Team had little time to act as individuals after that, remaining powerlinxed as the Star Saber while the Decepticons used the sword as one-third of the Hydra Cannon, before it was stolen by Sideways and used to provide power to the heart of Unicron. Runway, Sonar and Jetstorm reawakened as individuals with the help of High Wire and the Street Action Team, who had journeyed to Unicron's core with Optimus Prime, Galvatron and the Earth children to grant the super-weapon Mini-Cons their freedom. Origin Jetstorm fled Unicron aboard the Autobot Jetfire just before the Chaos-Bringer was finally destroyed. Mortal Combat

Dreamwave Armada comics
When the Decepticons began hunting down Mini-Cons, Jetstorm lived Mini-Con Village B13 along with his teammates Runway and Sonar. The Decepticons eventually attacked B13 and captured them, but they escaped Decepticon Headquarters and took refuge in the Garbage Disposal District, where they managed to salvage an old starship. The Air Defense Team planned to break their fellow Mini-Cons out of the Decepticon base, then take to the stars in search of freedom. When they found another runaway Mini-Con, Sparkplug, Jetstorm extracted a Decepticon tracking device from his shoulder. With Sparkplug's help, they successfully then went through with their plan. Dreamwave Armada issue 2

However, their ship malfunctioned and crashed on Earth, where the Jetstorm and the others lay dormant for a million years. After awakening thanks to a reactivation signal, they hid in Rapid City whilst <s>thinking up a new plan</s> letting Runway think up a new plan to get them and their brothers into space again. Before long, they were found by the Decepticons, who captured them and forcibly combined them into the powerful Star Saber. Dreamwave Armada issue 6 Megatron used the sword to attack the Autobot base, but Optimus Prime took it from him and begged the Air Defense Team to fight Megatron's control and remember who they were. His pleas got through, and Jetstorm and his teammates separated and fought back against the Decepticons.

Dreamwave Armada issue 8 Jetstorm and Sonar were left imprisoned on Dualor's moonbase while Runway was taken on a tour around the place. Dreamwave Armada issue 9 Shortly after Runway was reunited with them, the Decepticons attacked the moonbase. Dreamwave Armada issue 10

Following the evacuation of the moonbase, Jetstorm and his teammates disappeared for a while.

After returning to Cybertron, Jetstorm joined the rest of the Mini-Cons in channeling their energies through the Mini-Con Matrix and heavily damaging Unicron. The End
{{note|In the Panini comics, Jetstorm's name and personality were switched with Runway's (see Notes for more information).
Jetstorm was among the Mini-Cons who ended up near Lincoln, Nebraska when their ship crashed, but he disappeared shortly after being reactivated. Panini Armada issue 3 He began leading his team on various heroic deeds around the country, such as diverting a falling satellite from crashing in Chicago. However, this accident turned out to be bait set by Starscream, who was out to capture the team. Jetstorm was quickly grabbed by the Decepticon and urged his teammates to save themselves. He ended being saved by a team of Autobots, and while he denied their invitation to join the Autobots, he didn't notice that Starscream had placed a tracking device on him... Panini Armada issue 5

In their quest to get off Earth, the Air Defense Team decided to steal a human spaceship from NASA. However, when they broke into a hangar, they found soldiers from the Extra-Terrestrial Response Division waiting for them. They incapacitated Runway, and Jetstorm only had time to warn Sonar against not hurting the humans before they two were taken down and captured. Jetstorm and the others were taken to Area 54, where he and Sonar quickly woke back up. Curious about the ERTD's apparent knowledge about Mini-Cons, Jetstorm hacked their database and found that they had previously captured the Land Military Team as well. However, his hacking triggered an alarm, and the Air Defense Team were forced to escape. Panini Armada issue 5

Before the team could plan a way to save the Land Military Team, Starscream followed the tracker on Jetstorm and captured them. He disengaged their personality chips and combined them into the legendary Star Saber, which he promptly used to assault the Street Action Team. However, Starscream didn't know only the will of the Air Defense Team members could keep the Star Saber's power in check, so without their personalities intact, the weapon quickly went out of control. As its power threatened to rip the Earth apart, Optimus Prime showed up and urged Jetstorm and the others to separate our of their own free will. His words reached them, and the planet was saved. Panini Armada issue 7 The Air Defense Team subsequently told the Autobots about the Mini-Cons captured by the ERDT and managed to track them down thanks to Amos Hume. They found that the humans were attempting to auction them off, so Jetstorm and the others interrupted by disabling their technology with pulse disruptor beams. He then suggested that they let the auction owner be dealt with by the human military forces converging on the area. Panini Armada issue 7
