Space Knights are the elite warriors of the Solstar Order's military arm. Instantly recognizable by their trademark silver armor, the Space Knights have spent the last two hundred years waging endless war against their foes the Dire Wraiths, a race of malicious alien shapeshifters. This endless war has given rise to the signature arsenal of the Space Knights, a wide variety of multi-purpose tools designed to help track down and eliminate their slippery foes. These include the Dire-Wraith detecting Analyzers and the deadly Neutralizers, both of which are housed within their flight-capable suits of armor.

Though rare, it is not unheard of for Space Knights to range beyond Solstar territory in their pursuit of the Wraiths. Rom, a Lord of the Solstar Order, has recently followed the trail of the Dire Wraiths all the way to Earth.
M.A.S.K. accompanies G.I. Joe to Autobot City to get help, while more members of Baron Ironblood's villainous cadre step out of the shadows to proceed with the next step of their plan.

Synopsis
Scarlett's reading of Joe Colton's letter is interrupted as a phalanx of Red Shadows crash through the walls of the bunker. The Joes pull out, fighting their way through the ninja back to the surface, realizing as they go that Colton has wired the entire base to blow. The team intends to hijack one of the heli-transports on the launchpad outside to get away, but even it is set to explode, and does so before they can get to it. His patience expired, Roadblock puts all of his might to work shoulder-charging his way through the Red Shadows, clearing a path that lets the team make it outside before the whole base goes up. Once they have regained their bearings, Scarlett resumes reading Colton's letter, and learns that Colton has joined forces with Garrison Kreiger to avail of the "weapon of last resort" he possesses. Having found official channels to insurmountably corrupted by Dire Wraith infiltration, Colton went outside the law to enact this plan, creating a new identity for himself: Baron Ironblood.

On Cybertron, Destro and Storm Shadow blast their way past Optimus Prime and Windblade in the Razorback, making for their pre-determined rendezvous point. Also on course for the same location is the team of Miles Mayhem, Garrison Kreiger and a third villain whose face remains hidden in shadow, who are transporting Kreiger's weapon—the mysterious alien obelisk known as the "Talisman"—in Mayhem's "Outlaw" truck. The plan is to connect the Talisman to Cybertron's core and poison the planet from within—a task which requires the "Enerchange" interface abilities of the final member of the villainous team, Microspace minister of war Shazraella. The inches-tall Shazraella requires a larger body in order to do her part, the procurement of which falls to Storm Shadow; from the fleeing crowd of panicked Cybertronians, the ninja selects and cuts down the Eukarian Antagony so that Shazraella can Enerchange and fuse with her, gaining control of her body. Linking up with the rest of the villains, the now-giant Shazraella hefts the Talisman onto her back, and she and the rest of the team—squabbling and backbiting all the way, of course—enter a duct that will lead them down into the depths of the planet.

While the villains' main objective goes into motion, Baron Ironblood and the rest of his footsoldiers keep the Transformers and Flint's G.I. Joe team busy. Head of planetary security Ironhide saves Flint, Spike, and Talon from a band of Red Shadows led by Major Bludd, then calls for a retreat back to the Spire, hoping that the Council of Worlds can work together and form a plan. Unfortunately, Starscream and Elita One are too busy arguing to do any planning; Elita blames Starscream for allowing the humans onto Cybertron in the first place, and opines that they should all be wiped out, starting with new council member Marissa Faireborn. Optimus Prime tries to intercede, but Marissa can take care of herself; she impugns Elita's ability to resolve the situation without resorting to mass-murder, which proves just insulting enough for Elita to take up the challenge. When Elita calls her orbiting ship Carcer to order reinforcements sent down the planet's surface, however, the Council are met with only more bad news: the Knights of the Solstar Order have also arrived in Cybertronian orbit, their attention caught by the mutated, Dire-Wraith-like biology of the Talisman-altered Red Shadows, and they have placed the planet under quarantine!

Back on Earth, Scarlett calls in Matt Trakker and Gloria Baker of M.A.S.K., who provide the heroes a weapon of last resort of their own: a stabilized version of the alien techno-virus recovered from the remains of Astrotrain during the two teams' The Deathstone. Knowing that they will require use of a space bridge to get to Cybertron and join the fight there, the group sets course in a submarine for Autobot City, hovering above the Greenland Sea. Upon surfacing, they are met by Skyburst and Stormclash, who usher them aboard the city to meet with Soundwave. The Decepticon explains that the space bridge has been shut down from Cybertron's side, cutting them off, but the humans and Transformers put their heads together and figure out how to proceed. Deducing that the villains must have piggbacked their M.A.S.S. Device teleporter on the space bridge's signal to reach Cybertron in the first place, the heroes conclude it should be possible for them to recreate the effect for a one-shot teleportation—if they can get their hands on the M.A.S.S. Device itself. With alamaring alacrity, the Torchbearer twins refit the bridge for the plan, then the combined forces of G.I. Joe, M.A.S.K., and Autobot City prepare to storm Castle Destro and take the M.A.S.S. Device by force!
Notes
In addition to this 20-page main story, First Strike #2 also includes the four-page second chapter of an ongoing back-up strip, "The Origins of Evil," detailing how Ironblood assembled his evil allies.

IDW continuity notes
*Colton refers to "getting a new hand"; issue #0 showed how he had lost a hand to attempted Dire Wraith possession, while last issue's back-up strip explained how he had replaced with a Talisman-tech prosthesis.
*Colton references his very first encounter with a Cybertronian life-form, as documented in issue 3 of Revolutionaries.
*Trakker notes that the facsimile Transformers Ironblood uses to smuggle his forces onto Cybertron are "definitely M.A.S.K. tech." There's nothing overtly "M.A.S.K."-y about the robots themselves, and the advanced tech Kreiger has access to means Mayhem's involvement is hardly a certainly based on that alone; therefore, though it's not specifically stated, Matt must logically be deducing this based on regular Cybertronians' inability to detect the villains' robots as phonies. M.A.S.K. vehicles are blind to Cybertronian scanners as a result of enhancements made following Mayhem's study of Blitzwing, as seen in Revolution #2.
*As referenced in a footnote, the Joe and M.A.S.K. teams previously worked together to recover the remains of Astrotrain in The Deathstone. The Decepticon died in space in The Transformers #55, and the annual showed how his dismembered body parts crashed to Earth, having picked up a techno-virus along the way.
*According to Roadblock, Dial Tone has "eyes on" Doctor X and the Iron Klaw, answering the question of where the other two members of Ironblood's alliance in Revolutionaries are. Last issue's back-up strip, "Redcliffe Club", alluded to Doctor X's absence by having her mention her disinterest in travelling to Cybertron.
*Scarlett refers to Gloria Baker getting "out of the game," and a footnote references M.A.S.K. #10 for this story point... except that issue was running late and hadn't been released at the time of this issue's publication.
*Major Bludd appears among Ironblood's ground troops; he has been working for the Baron since prior to Revolutionaries #1, having severed ties with Cobra some years earlier following the events of the 2012 Cobra Command storyline.
*Appearing for the first time in the main First Strike series, after appearing in the First Strike #0 prelude, is the the mysterious obelisk code-named "Talisman," which has been the central macguffin of Revolutionaries. This enigmatic device is an apparent creation of Onyx Prime's, but also includes elements of the bio-technologies of Microspace and the Dire Wraiths. Its original purpose is unknown, but it arrived on Earth during the Ice Age, when the Eukarian vessel carrying it crashed on the planet. It was found in the 20th century by Garrison Kreiger, who made study of it his life's work; in particular Revolutionaries #7 showed how Kreiger and Colton discovered the Talisman's energy was deadly to Transformers, setting them on the course that has led to the events of First Strike.
*Also referenced in a footnote is Starscream's familiarity with Dire Wraiths, with whom he previously worked nearly two centuries before today in Rom vs. Transformers: Shining Armor.
*Starscream mentions Elita One's refusal to bring down Carcer and help Cybertron, back in Till All Are One #5.
*Ironblood's alliance has been using the M.A.S.S. Device to move around Earth throughout Revolutionaries; this issue's back-up strip explains that Destro provided the Baron with use of it. The Joes head out to storm Castle Destro at issue's end, since that's where the original, imperfect M.A.S.S. Device was housed way back in the very earliest issues of IDW's G.I. Joe in 2008. The perfected M.A.S.S. was constructed at Cobra's Arctic Section Zero base, but Destro has evidently used the advancements made there to get his original working.

Hasbro franchise references
*The Outlaw was a toy from the second year of the M.A.S.K. toyline, converting from the tractor trailer seen here to a mobile battlefield headquarters. It was Miles Mayhem's second personal vehicle in the series, following the Switchblade.
The time-tossed Sgt. Savage aids G.I. Joe and the Revolutionaries when Baron Ironblood's alliance arrives to reclaim the Talisman.

Synopsis
In 1994, in Brasnya's Project Iceman facility, after years of experimentation and augmentation at the hands of Garrison Kreiger, Mike Power, the Atomic Man is at last ready to make contact with the Talisman once more. As Kreiger and Centurion watch, Power reaches out to touch the obelisk, triggering a surge of energy and the sudden unexpected appearance of Centurion's starship Axalon, which vanished fifty years prior right before Kreiger's eyes! From the Axalon, a confused Sgt. Savage steps, unaware that he has been catapulted half a century into his future, but before explanations can be provided, Joe Colton and his Adventure Team—now the "Adventure Force"—storm the facility to shut down Kreiger's experiments. Spotting Mike Power's body, Stalker can detect no signs of life and the group is left to believe Power has died.

Savage adapts quickly to life in the 1990s, teaming up with the contemporary Action Man and his "Team Extreme" to fight the villains of the era. His adventures continue into the 21st century until, one day, he detects a distress signal emanating from the vicinity of Mount St. Helens, near Oregon. Speeding to the scene, he discovers G.I. Joe—the newly-founded special mission force that has replaced Colton's Adventure Team—in battle with the Decepticon Bugly. Savage pitches in, but the fight is won when Centurion appears and incapacitates the rogue Cybertronian. Savage and the Joes follow Centurion back to his base of operations, a Cybertronian facility within Mount St. Helens originally assembled by the Decepticons under Bludgeon's command when they briefly visited early in the 1980s, which has since been discovered and refurbished by Joshua Red and his Skywatch organization, and is now being run by Kreiger and Colton. Savage is quickly ushered through into the next room; the other Joes apparently lack the clearance for what he is about to be told, which neither Stalker nor Hawk are best pleased about.

Kreiger and Colton reveal to Savage that they have moved the Talisman into the facility to further experiment on it using Ore-13, and that Bugly is one of a handful of incapacitated Transformers Skywatch found within the mountain. While the other two remain offline, the organization was able to bring Bugly back to life, and now begin chaining him to the Talisman. Savage can see Bugly is terrified, and is alarmed to see Colton acting in this way, but before he can take any steps to stop their plan, he is picked up by Centurion, and flung at the Talisman. The "distress call," it turns out, was just a means of luring Savage in; Kreiger and Colton have realized that his trip through time has saturated his body with Talisman energy, which they can use to reactivate the device. As Savage's body makes contact with the Talisman, its energy surges and utterly destroys Bugly, proving to Kreiger and Colton that they can use it as a weapon... but things do not stop there, as once more, the Talisman sends Savage spiraling through time...

...to arrive a further decade in the future, back in the Project: Iceman facility, in front of the very confused Revolutionaries, who have just managed to successfully capture Kreiger for his crimes. Taking things in stride, Savage accompanies the team to Garrison Blackrock's Onyx facility in Buenos Aires, where the Talisman is being stored and studied in continued hopes of finding a cure for those it mutated into Dire Wraiths. While the group wait for G.I. Joe to arrive and take custody of both the Talisman and the captive Kreiger, Savage tells Mayday his story, Blackrock continues his work, Action Man catches up with Bryce Chan, and Kup tells Centurion about Cybertron. Unfortunately, just as the Joes are drawing near, Centurion reveals that his change of heart is anything but, as he taps into the buildings defense systems and has them open fire on the Joes' aircraft. Worse still, the building has already been infiltrated by Doctor X and Storm Shadow, the latter having holographically disguised herself as Blackrock's assistant Camila—a disguise she now drops as she stabs Blackrock through the chest. Second later, Baron Ironblood himself teleports into the building via the M.A.S.S. Device, flanked by the Red Shadows, Major Bludd, and the Oktober Guard, and utter pandemonium breaks out. The Joes abandon their aircraft and are able to get inside the building just before a forcefield seals it off, but they are not prepared for what is about to happen. Savage sees right through Ironblood—making a beeline for the villain, he pounces on him, rips his helmet off, and reveals that underneath, the Baron is really... Joe Colton?!
Notes
Continuity notes
*Sgt. Savage was shown disappearing with the Axalon in issue #5.
*We first learned that the Adventure Team believed Garrison Kreiger had killed Atomic Man in issue #3, when Bulletman told our heroes so. After last issue alluded to the events by noting that "weird stuff" had happened in the waning days of the Adventure Team, this issue gives up the full scoop.
*Mayday reminds Blackrock of the time he "broke out of G.I. Joe custody and escaped to another planet," which happened in The Transformers #56.
*Bryce Chan notes that G.I. Joe has among its ranks "something of an expert on Dire Wraith DNA," referring to Doc, who discovered she was a Dire Wraith/human hybrid in G.I. Joe #5.
*Roadblock refers to his cousin being about the mutated Wraith-Joes from issue #1; that's Heavy Duty he's talking about.
*Major Bludd has replaced the arm he lost in issue #1; Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook #2 notes it's now a Talisman-tech cybernetic prosthesis.
*Bugly is the only one of the original six 1988 Decepticon Pretenders who has not previously appeared in IDW continuity. Most of the rest of the group were members of Bludgeon's team who came to Earth in the 1980s in Spotlight: Soundwave, in pursuit of Ore-13, and operated out of the base in Mount St. Helens which Skywatch are here shown to have discovered and retrofitted as Project: Hot House. Bugly is here revealed to have actually been part of that group, who was left behind on Earth when he was caught in the eruption that Bludgeon triggered to entomb Soundwave and his cassettes, as seen in the Spotlight issue.
*The Joes' fight with Bugly evidently takes place prior to In or Out?. Duke was inducted into the Joe team by Hawk in that issue, while later issues of G.I. Joe: Origins would show that the only other members of the team at the time of Duke's joining were Stalker and Scarlett.
*Joshua Red and his nascent Skywatch organization were shown unearthing Ravage and Laserbeak at the end of Spotlight: Soundwave. They were wearing the white-and-red hazamat suits that Red and Colton are shown wearing in this issue, which are strongly implied to have been what Colton based his Baron Ironblood costume on.
*Soundwave, in his cassette player mode, is shown sitting in a box marked "For Good Will." The Decepticon was trapped in his alternate mode by an experimental weapon in Spotlight: Soundwave, and Skywatch, unaware of his true nature, will eventually give him away to a charity shop, where he will be purchased by a teenager before finally being brought back online in Maximum Dinobots.
*Colton mentions watching Sgt. Savage on TV as a child; his hero worship of Savage was originally introduced in Threat Matrix 1 of 4.

Hasbro franchise references
*The Joe pilot whose craft is blown out of the air isn't identified by name; he's flying a Conquest X-30, which is typically the purview of Slip-Stream, but he doesn't especially look like him.
*The 1990s Action Man that Sgt. Savage joins forces with is the version of the character from the Action Man (1995 TV series), but it's unclear if this is Ian's direct predecessor, Mike Brogan (back when he was young), or another holder of the Action Man name who came between Brogan and the 1980s Action Man encountered by the Adventure Team in Revolution #0.
*Accompanying the '90s Action Man is Natalie Poole, another character from the '95 animated series. Presumably she's the only one used here because she was the only other member who was actually British. Savage notes their team is called the "Team Extreme"; this name wasn't used for the '95 series, but instead comes from the Action Man (2000 TV series), featuring a different cast of characters. Also, it was spelled "Team Xtreme," because of course it friggin' was.
*The '90s villains Team Extreme are shown fighting includes Cesspool, an eco-terrorist from the 1991-92 range of G.I. Joe "Eco-Warriors" action figures; a Toxo-Viper zombie from the same range, which is a little odd to see given Cobra's existence in the shadows at the time this flashback is set; and the gaudy 1993 action figure version of Cobra master of disguise Zartan, complete with mohawk and sleeveless jacket. Whether we should consider him to be the same guy as the actual IDW Zartan or just a visual easter egg seems better off left alone.

Real-life references
*This issue's title is an allusion to Sgt. Savage's "Screaming Eagles" unit, and seems to be a bit of a mashup of Where Eagles Dare and "When Doves Cry".
*The 90s version of the Adventure Team and Action Man's "Team Extreme" are decked out with big shoulder pads, huge guns, and lots of little straps and pouches in homage to the eccentricities of 1990s comics, particularly those of artist Rob Liefeld. Even their new name, "Adventure Force," evokes the book that made Liefeld a star, X-Force.
*Kup thinks Centurion is downloading pirated episodes of the British TV quiz show Mastermind (TV series).
*The various threats Sgt. Savage remembers fighting in the 1990s include eco-terrorists, mutants, skateboard gangs, and ninjas... all staples of '90s action-driven pop-culture, to the point that G.I. Joe itself even featured several of them as extended sub-lines that appeared in story-arcs of the Marvel comic book.
*"Eat my shorts!" snarls Savage to Ironblood, quoting Bart Simpson's old catchphrase.
*Savage enjoys "Can't Get You Out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue, the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, and the movie The Matrix.
*Savage wonders if the Talisman will teach humans how to "throw bones into space," comparing it to the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey (film) by flippantly describing a scene from the film.

Errors
*The caption box introducing Centurion describes him as a "displaced Cybertronian". While it can be argued that this is technically true - "Cybertronian" being the species name for Transformers - the usual useage in IDW continuity would indicate that a "Cybertronian" is a Transformer who's "from Cybertron", which Centurion ain't - he's a displaced Eukarian.

Other trivia
*Originally solicited for release in June, this issue arrives significantly late, two months after the fact, in mid-August. It is catching up a bit, though, coming out only three weeks after issue #6. Not fast enough, sadly, to avoid the spoiler for Baron Ironblood's true identity being blown in First Strike #1 the week before release.
