the species
The Alternity (オルタニティ Orutaniti) are a highly evolved form of Cybertronian life. They are gestalt beings, existing in higher-dimensional space, each one formed from the combination of the infinite variations of a singular individual which exist throughout the multiverse. Individuals are invited to become part of the Alternity, at which point they join the collective intelligence of the combined being, while at the same time retaining their individuality, effectively becoming all of the composite incarnations of the being at once, allowing the Alternity to exist across an infinite number of universal streams simultaneously.

To interact with the physical world, the Alternity create material vessels called auto-avatars, which are comparable in capabilities to the Cybertronians of many universal streams, but carry many unique technological advancements specific to the Alternity. In their native forms, they are composed of Alternium, a higher-dimensional material which resonates with the incarnations of the being on similar universal streams.

Having originated from universal stream Primax 903.0 Beta, manipulating that timeline is a dicey proposition at best for the Alternity due to issues of causality. As a result, agents known as Protectors are employed to deal with threats to the timeline. These agents are not Alternity themselves, which helps to avoid temporal paradox.

The Alternity are almost exclusively Autobots and Maximals, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by the Decepticons, most notably Megatron.

Fiction
Story of Binaltech
A key component in their ascension as a species to their hyper-dimensional state was the Timaeus Project, which not only began the initial forays into what would become the Timaeus drive dimensional locomotion system, but also began to isolate and refine the first Alternium.

Alternity
The Alternity serve as protectors to the residents of lower-dimensional universes, working to oppose the predations of the "Beast of Time," the creature known as Hytherion. When the creature arrived in universal stream Primax 109.0 Beta, the Optimus Prime of that world joined the Alternity.

The Autobots and Decepticons battle over another Mini-Con, and we learn about why nobody talks crap about Red Alert.

Synopsis
At the Autobot base, Red Alert does some important technical work while Hot Shot plays tag with the kids and their Mini-Cons. They manage to outrun him, until Hot Shot requests some aid from Jolt, who quickly apprehends Carlos. Carlos, upset at losing, calls Jolt an eggbeater. The noise grabs the attention of Red Alert, who chews out Hot Shot for playing around while he should be working. When Optimus investigates the commotion, both Red Alert and Hot Shot dismiss their conflict. Alexis feels the tension in the air and has a bad feeling.

Hot Shot apologizes to the kids for making them watch himself and Red Alert bicker. Optimus then explains to Hot Shot and the kids how Red Alert's dedication to preparation was integral to winning many battles on Cybertron. Hot Shot understands that Red Alert is great, but doesn't see why Red Alert won't let himself have a personality. Suddenly the alarms go off, signifying that another Mini-Con panel has activated. The Autobots and their human friend quickly warp to the location of the panel: Antarctica.

In the ruins of the Mini-Con ship on the Moon, Megatron also detects the Mini-Con panel. Noticing Starscream's absence, Cyclonus speculates that Starscream has already left for Earth to rectify his lack of personal Mini-Con and Demolishor calls Starscream dumb. As Megatron tells his goons to be silent, Starscream holds a blade close beside Demolishor's head, revealing himself. Megatron sends the three Decepticon minions to Earth.

At the Antarctic, penguins! Lots of them! Also, Autobots and Decepticons.

The Autobots stop due to a drive system failure, and Optimus Prime's trailer converts into its command center mode in front of the astonished humans. Red Alert fixes Optimus's systems while Hot Shot is impatient. And jerky. After Prime is finished, Hot Shot and Carlos leave together (with a bit of assistance from Jolt).

Starscream searches for the Mini-Con by chopping icebergs to no avail, so he flies to search in a different area. Megatron, seeing Starscream from a distance, instructs his henchmen to follow. Eventually Starscream is the first to find the Mini-Con, embedded in the wall of an ice shelf. But before retrieving the Mini-Con he notices Hot Shot nearby and attacks, forcing the Autobot into a massive ice-crevice. Hot Shot is saved from certain death by his Mini-Con, Jolt, and together they ascend the ice wall to return to the battle, noticing the Mini-Con on the way up.

The other Decepticons notice the Mini-Con panel glowing and transform to retrieve it. Further away, the rest of the Autobots also notice the Mini-Con and Optimus heads over.

At the showdown between Starscream and Hot Shot, Hot Shot has the idea to jump his car mode directly into Starscream, air-bludgeoning the Decepticon. The other Decepticons attack Hot Shot, and verbally attack Starscream. Hot Shot drives away with the Decepticons after him. From within Red Alert, Rad sees Hot Shot under fire and is concerned, but Red Alert tells Rad to relax. Right then, Carlos is tossed out of Hot Shot into the abyss, but Jolt, like during the earlier game of tag, grabs onto Carlos and lifts him to safety. Cyclonus fires his "laser pulse attack" at Hot Shot. Hot Shot and Jolt return fire at the Decepticons. Megatron returns fire at Hot Shot.

Red Alert drops off the kids and tells them to find a safe area, and the two instead decide to find Carlos. When Cyclonus is about to finish-off Hot Shot at close ranger, but Hot Shot is saved when Red Alert uses his cable to violent pull Cyclonus backwards. Megatron takes Hot Shot hostage. Red Alert works his way out of the awkward situation by uses his disc launcher, bouncing the flying disc off of Demolishor and into the back of Megatron. Optimus finally arrives, making the sides even. The three Decepticons retreat.

Starscream, using his sword to climb the ice wall to where the Mini-Con is, begins to punch the wall. This makes things difficult for Carlos, who can barely hang on to stop from plunging to his death. A punch from Starscream disrupts the terrain enough to send all three kids plunging to their demise, but Red Alert's colorful flying disc catches them. Starscream grabs the Mini-Con panel, but Red Alert swipes it away. Unwisely, Starscream opens fire, but as a result, plunges into the depth of the ice-canyon.

Back at the Autobot base, the Mini-Con is shown to be Jetstorm, who doesn't activate. Red Alert and Hot Shot make amends with each other, and Red Alert reveals that beneath his robocop-esque demeanor, he too, appreciates Hot Shot's abilities.
Notes
Differences with Micron Legend
Animation and technical errors
* During Optimus Prime's flashback lecture, we see Red Alert in his Cybertronic body. However, Optimus Prime himself is in a modified version of his Earth body, with no wheels attached to his legs.

* When Starscream holds his sword at Demolishor, he is seen with both wings on. This is irregular as Starscream's left wing becomes his sword. This is continued for the rest of the episode.
* When Carlos tells Hot Shot "It's pedal to the metal time!", the snow kicked up by Hot Shot's tires is miscoloured black and grey, making it appear that the jerkface Autobot is polluting the area.
* When Starscream tells Hot Shot and Carlos to look behind, Carlos calls the Autobot 'Hot Rod', Hot Shot's Japanese name.
* Numerous times throughout the episode, Decepticons appear with purple Autobot insignias.Maybe they came from the Shatteredverse?

* After Hot Shot's collision with him, Starscream lies on some ice. His forearm is miscoloured red when the rest of the Decepticons turn up.
* As he rescues Carlos, Jolt is seen carrying the human by the barrels of his gun. But in the next shot he is drawn as a completely different design of helicopter, rescuing Carlos with landing gear that Jolt does not have.

Continuity errors
* After Starscream slices an iceberg in half and then leaves upon detecting the Mini-Con signal, both Demolishor and Cyclonus react saying they've found him. Did Starscream disappear since the last time we saw the Decepticons?
* As the Decepticons chase after Hot Shot, we see Rad, Alexis and Red Alert come to the edge of the cliff on the other side of the ice canyon. Didn't Optimus Prime tell the trio to stay back so that he could investigate in an earlier scene?
* Where did Optimus disappear to when he (apparently) wandered off to investigate? He doesn't turn up until Hot Shot and Red Alert are cornered by the Decepticons.
* When Red Alert (if that is Red Alert) swoops down to get the Mini-Con panel he looks like a tiny jet.
* After Red Alert scoops the Mini-Con panel out of Starscream's hands, Starscream fires at Red Alert's cliff edge, only to have the ice hit him and send the Decepticon to the bottom of the canyon. In the next shot Red Alert is suddenly standing next to Optimus Prime, a fair distance away from the cliff edge.

Trivia
*When the Autobots transform before going into the warp gate, the animation sequences are the same ones from the climax of episode 2, played in reverse.

*When Optimus tells the kids to put their seat-belts on, only Rad and Alexis comply. Tsk tsk.
*There is a nice touch when the Decepticons warp to the south pole—as soon as Megatron materialises, the iceberg they are all standing upon suddenly sinks in their direction due to the weight.
*This episode marks the first time we see Optimus Prime's container trailer transform into its base mode.
*This episode reveals that Starscream's engines are stored in his kneecaps.
*As Hot Shot slides toward the ice canyon during the Decepticon attack, he actually ejects Carlos into the canyon so he can transform! Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on the viewer's perspective), Carlos is rescued by Jolt.

* Numerous times throughout the episode, Decepticons appear with purple Autobot insignias.Maybe they came from the Shattered Glass (franchise)?

Jack and Arcee undertake a dangerous mission on Cybertron to access Vector Sigma, while Orion begins to rebel against Megatron.

Synopsis
Jack and Arcee walk through Kaon, guided by the light of the Key to Vector Sigma. They come upon a circular clearing, and the key glows intensely, indicating that they must be close. Suddenly, the ground begins to shake, and cracks appear in the surface. The duo watch in awe as a passageway rises from the ground, its door illuminated the same as the Key. It opens, but just as the two are about to enter, an enormous creature rears up from atop the passage. Arcee's Autobot symbol catches its eye, and it charges her, Arcee's minute strength doing nothing to injure it. She is quickly incapacitated, and the creature notices Jack, giving temporary pursuit until distracted by Arcee. Jack radios Ratchet and is told that the creature is an Insecticon, one of many sentries left to guard the dead Cybertron. Arcee tells Jack to go, to his surprise, but he realizes the necessity. As he enters, the door closes behind him.

On the Nemesis, Megatron inquires as to Orion's progress on Project Iacon. Orion says it's tough work, but Megatron says otherwise, revealing to him that all of his unsanctioned research has been recorded. Orion takes the opportunity to ask about his reported affiliation with the Autobots, but Megatron merely tells him to get back to work. Orion decides that enough is enough, and erases his progress in the archives. Megatron laughs, and shows the clerk that he has been recorded and documented in his pursuits. Soundwave intrudes, to show Megatron that one of their sentries came online on Cybertron. Orion asks how anything is alive on the planet, but Megatron tells him to continue his work-or be terminated.

Back on Cybertron, Arcee tangles with the enormous bug, but is no match for its brute strength. Finished with her, the Insecticon turns its attention to the fleshling, and breaks its way into the tunnel.

In the depths of the tunnel, Jack hears a familiar noise, and uproots a metal bar for protection.

Back on the Nemesis, Megatron reviews the reports with Soundwave. He learns of the space bridge's activation, its endpoint, and the fact that it is still active. He quickly deduces the Autobots' plan.

In Cybertron's gullet, Jack arrives at the chamber of Vector Sigma. He proceeds to the center of a circular platform, where he places the Key. The entire chamber begins to transform and glow with the Key's energy, and the enormous supercomputer reveals itself, and begins to transfer its energy to the Key.

On the Nemesis, Orion is hassled by the guards. He appeals to their "good nature", saying that he believes Megatron will use the information he is agglomerating for nefarious purposes. Good-old fashioned police brutality ensues as the helpless clerk is kicked and punched by his guards.

In the chamber, Jack is antsy about the speed of his download. His problems lie beyond his dial-up, however, because behind him, a horde of Scraplets has just taken notice of the very alive metal before him in the form of the Key to Vector Sigma. Jack is helpless to fend them off, and they begin to snack on the download port. He reports frantically on his position to ground control

In the space bridge chamber, however, the Autobots have bigger fish to fry as Megatron steps out of a GroundBridge to them. Ratchet vows to protect their charges, and the battle begins, Megatron easily flooring every Autobot, Ratchet and Bulkhead twice.

On Cybertron, Arcee awakes to find a Scraplet chewing on her foot. She blasts it off, and notices the opened passage—and the absent Insecticon. Transforming, she speeds into the passageway.

Jack valiantly smashes the Scraplets as they feed, but is unable to stop their progress towards the Matrix. Another problem presents itself behind him in the form of the Insecticon. It charges towards him, but stops in its tracks, staring at the key. Jack realizes why, and the Scraplets suddenly become a blessing. He formulates an idea, pulling a Scraplet off the Key and pointing it at the aggressor. The Insecticon turns tail as it realizes what's happening, but the Scraplets give chase and latch on, quickly chewing through the giant insect as it falls to its doom, limbs disconnected. The download completes, and Jack retrieves the key. Arcee finally arrives, and the two depart.

The Vehicon guards continue to beat down Orion, and one of them lets slip that it's a privilege to beat the former leader of the Autobots. Orion pleads with them to stop, and in his defense, he accidentally transforms his arms into blasters. Realizing they're in trouble, the guards fire on Pax, but he quickly dispatches them both.

Arcee and Jack arrive at the space bridge portal, and radio Ratchet about their position. Total silence on the comm tip them off that something is wrong, and, undetected on the other end of the portal, Megatron waits to end the lineage of the Primes. However, he is surprised by the sudden arrival of Orion Pax, who vows that, no matter what his heritage might be, his spark is aligned with the Autobots. He deploys his blades, and charges for Megatron, but is quickly defeated. Megatron says that he has much to learn, and prepares to kill him, but Arcee speeds through the bridge and collides with him, sending them both flying. In the light of the bridge, Jack presents the Key to Orion, who hesitates, but accepts his destiny.

The Key begins to upload the Matrix to its host. Megatron, preoccupied with fighting Arcee, notices this, and desperately runs at him. However, Orion Pax—now Optimus Prime—isn't ready to go down again, and trounces his enemy. A GroundBridge portal opens up, and the Autobots retreat.

At base, the Autobots and humans rejoice at their reunion. Noticing his Decepticon symbol, Optimus asks Ratchet what had happened. He replies that it was their darkest hour, but at every point along the way, Optimus was truly an Autobot at spark.
Notes
Animation and technical errors
Continuity errors
*Who GroundBridged Optimus to Megatron?

Continuity notes
*The scraplets seem a lot nastier in this episode, chewing so fast as to render a hulking robot limbless in a matter of seconds. This is not an error, as many factors could contribute, such as the scraplets' inability to find living metal on the barren Cybertron and the ancient state of the Insecticon.
*Optimus still has the broken sword from waaaaay back in "One Shall Fall". It would seem that the Decepticons neglected to repair it.
*Fowler seems to be rather... attached to June as of late. Either the comics messed up, or somebody needs to give her husband some love.

Transformers references
* Ratchet references The Transformers: The Movie by referring to an event as "our darkest hour", as he did before in "Darkness Rising, Part 5".
* Bulkhead calls Megatron a "bucket head", a reference to the original Megatron.
* The Insecticon's insect mode resembles a large rhinoceros beetle, like several other Insecticons.
*Seen through the Scraplets' point-of-view, the sphere of Vector Sigma is seen in its faceted orb appearance common to many continuities.

Real-world references
*Bulkhead's line bemoaning the Scraplets on Cybertron is a paraphrase of the oft-referenced "Why did it have to be snakes?" line from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Trivia
*Look closely at the arena circle in Kaon: it's the same arena as seen in "One Shall Rise, Part 3". Ironic that Vector Sigma lied beneath Megatron's feet at that moment.

BotCon 2008 was the Official Transformers Convention in 2008, run by Fun Publications. It was held in Cincinnati, Ohio, from April 24 to 27.
TOCclear

Run-up
Hype for the convention began on the BotCon website on November 27, 2007, when the entire page was replaced by a giant graphic of a mysterious trio of ominous-looking Autobots, a new logo featuring a purple BotCon logo with a matching purple Autobot symbol, and a spooky video clip featuring a backwards Transformers theme. The video clip also claimed that "this spring ... at BotCon 2008 ... everything you thought you knew ... will be ... shattered." Fans soon deduced that the convention toy set would have a "mirror universe" theme of evil Autobots.

On November 28, the page was updated with the location, date, and venue.

On January 31, 2008, registration forms went up. By February 14, demand was so high that orders for Iacon packages would no longer be taken, though those that had ordered Iacon packages up to that point would receive them. On February 29, the "Shattered Glass" set was announced to be sold out for Primus packages as well. On April 4, the free Ricochet attendee figure was announced to be sold out.

BotCon 2008 was held at the Duke Energy Center.
This set sold out (both boxed and bagged versions) well in advance of the convention, after which the 2005 Descent into Evil set was provided as an alternative.
Notes
*Hasbro initially released Transformers Animated toys exclusively in the Cincinnati area about 2 weeks prior to BotCon. Of course, by the time of the convention most dealers or locals had all but cleaned the stores out.
*In honor of this year's "evil universe" theme, many fans grew beards or goatees for the occasion.
