Bob Budiansky was the writer of most of the Marvel US Transformers comic book series and the creator of much of the mythos, characters, and names behind the first several years of the franchise.

In late 1983, Hasbro approached Marvel Comics to create a storyline around a series of transforming toy robots they had licensed from Takara. Editors Denny O'Neil and Jim Shooter created some of the early background for Transformers, including several names, but much of the material for the first 28 characters was rejected by Hasbro. Revision duties were passed to editor/writer Bob Budiansky, who renamed most of the characters and revised the personalities. Though Optimus Prime was named by O'Neil, Bob Budiansky is responsible for the names of Megatron, the Dinobots, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and countless others.

Due to its success, The Transformers four-issue miniseries became an ongoing. Bob Budiansky was moved from editing duties to writer. It was in these years that he developed popular characters Shockwave, Ratchet, and Grimlock into the roles they're famous for today. He also created the concept of the Autobot Matrix. Budiansky continued to write bios and name characters until the end of the original series.

Towards the end of his time on the comic book series, Budiansky started to feel fatigue. It was complicated and frustrating, from a story-crafting point of view, to introduce so many new characters in so few issues. At Budiansky's recommendation, the writer of the Marvel UK Transformers comic, Simon Furman, took over Budiansky's duties on the US comic.

An artist as well, Budianksy also drew several covers for Transformers and pencilled his final issue.

Outside of Transformers Budiansky is perhaps best known for drawing Ghost Rider, creating Sleepwalker and writing the entire series, and serving as group editor-in-chief of the Spider-Man titles between 1994 & 1995.
Budianskyisms
Though not as prominent or well-remembered as the so-called "Furmanisms" that successor writer Simon Furman would popularize, Bob Budiansky also had a few turns of phrase that he repeatedly fell back on:
Optimus Prime
I won't argue too hard against replacing a run-of-the-mill Ordinary Joe example with the Shining Icon -- Prime's art was my first thought when I was starting this page -- but I really don't want to see this article become burdened with a ton of Optimus Prime images. Better to stick with a wide variety of characters. Also, I really liked the Rollbar art because it so aptly illustrates the exaggeration inherent in most G1 art; it'd be nice to find a home for it on this page somewhere. -- Repowers 07:05, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
:I wanted to use G1 Prime's art because it's the most well known and one of the best 1984 art. Supercon Armada Prime's art is there because it's the only neutral white background packaging art from Armada that I know of on this wiki (the other being Powerlinx Optimus Prime). As for exaggeration, I'd say that's mostly for the first half of G1. During the Masters era and there after, the standard of packaging art was quite high. --FFN 07:28, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Do we really know those are CGI? They could very easily be paintings. --ItsWalky 18:01, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
:I was about to say. I'm pretty sure they're paintings. I'm sure the movie bots' headshots use CGI renders as a BASE, but do we really think they made CGI models of allllllll the non-movie bots' noggins? I severely doubt it. --M Sipher 18:09, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Links from Botch's Site; Question about mirroring
Hey hey, it's Botch. I wanted to mention that I put up a link to this page from the homepage of my Box Art Archive. In truth, I was hoping there was some way that I could mirror an edited version of the contents of this page via a feed of some sort, but I haven't found any information or utility for that yet. My hope was
* Allow people to read the history of TF box/character art without leaving my site
* Advertise this Wiki and encourage people to visit and contribute.
So if anyone has any opinions on all of this, feel free to shout them at me. -- Botch the Crab 02:47, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
:I don't think wikia sites have any kind of feed, but I'm not the expert. It's open source, so there's nothing to stop you from reproducing the content on your page in some form or other, but that wouldn't have live updating, of course. Regardless, the link is appreciated! -- Repowers 03:49, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Richard Marcej
This fellow's page shows instruction sheet line art, not package art paintings. I'm gonna guess that he was copying the paintings, rather than vice versa. Anybody got facts to the contrary? -- Repowers 03:49, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
:Marcej did the line art upon which both the final box art and instruction sheet art were based. The instruction sheet renderings all appear to be simplified versions of Marcej's renderings, and the box art looks like final painted versions (with all the detail). I compared several of the character's instruction sheet art and box art against Marcej's art and what I said above seems universally the case.
:As far as 'facts' (beyond what he presents on his site), Marcej even put out a small book of illustrations from his time as a Hasbro package designer. Honestly, based on the line art he's presented, I see no reason to doubt his word that he was at least the penciller/inker for all the box art I credited to him.
:There was an interview with him on Seibertron.com that is currently down, but I have asked them to restore it. It's here, working or otherwise. -- Botch the Crab 02:12, 11 March 2008 (UTC)<div id="wikia-credits"><br /><br /><small>From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki, a Wikia wiki.</small></div>

There was a rumor for a long time that Shockwave was killed in TF:TM. If he can indeed be spotted in Season 3, the name of the episode should be included here.--G.B. Blackrock 17:19, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

He was killed in the script to the movie, but that part was not animated, or at least not animated clearly so you could see him die. Shockwave does appear in later episodes in group shots, but then, these same group shots have combiner super robots standing next to their components and zombie versions of Brawn. Shockwave's post-movie status is indeterminable. --ItsWalky 17:33, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Wasn't there a laser-disc floating around which had large portions of Shockwave's personality encoded onto it? Even if he did actually DIE, there's certainly precedence for Transformers being resurrected from that kind of backup.--TheTurnipKing 06:32, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
:Perhaps you're referring to the disc that Shockwave gave to the Predacons in US issue #25. I've always assumed that the extent of Shockwave's personality on that disc was largely a claim made by Shockwave calculated to make Megatron think of Optimus Prime, driving him further into madness. I'm not sure the claim is meant to be taken seriously, but it is up for interpretation. In any event, this was a comic continuity occurrence, and wouldn't have anything to do with the cartoon Shockwave's post-movie status.--G.B. Blackrock 13:44, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
::Only thing is, how could Shockwave have made Megatron deliberately think of Prime with that reference, since it was never implied that Shockwave was even aware of the fact that Optimus Prime wasn't actually dead, let alone that his personality was stored on a floppy disc? It always seemed like a coincidence too perfect to me. Takeshi357 15:34, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
This page totally needs a screenshot of Shockwave with the Himself Gun. --Andrusi 20:45, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
it would be better if season 3 pictures of Shockwave can be found.

Could those season 3 episodes Five Faces of Darkness, Part 3 and Five Faces of Darkness, Part 4 animation errors be his clones?.
Should the prototype photo be included in the article?
Shockwave Variants page
Hey guys. I'm considering making a page dedicated to the multiple variant versions of Shockwave, such as Astro Magnum and the Four Star Astrogun. A couple of these are already mentioned in the G1 toy section of Shockwave's page. I figured a dedicated page would be better, and the Shockwave G1 toy section can mention and link to it.

I wanted to do it on the wiki because:
a) it's a strong part of Shockwave's history;
b) it would be helpful to fans trying to identify their Shockwave variants (no other really good page online does this);
c) I'm not the foremost expert on the topic, so it would benefit from community revision;
d) Shockwave is awesome.

I ran this buy Steve-o and he said he would support it. He said if I wanted to be conservative about it I should post here in advance first. So here I post.

On the assumption that no one will object, I'll start working on the page soon.<div id="wikia-credits"><br /><br /><small>From Teletraan I: The Transformers Wiki, a Wikia wiki.</small></div>
