In response to ''that'', a large number of U.S. soldiers and armour were sent in the general direction of North Korea.

An international incident was building with North Korea until [[All Hail Megatron issue 1|the Decepticons invaded]] and distracted everyone. North Korea then went quiet for three years, with [[Kim Jong Du]] coming to power without anyone being clear when. (North Korea may have been attacked itself) Under Kim's rule, North Korea began manufacturing [[energon]] in order to attract Decepticons as allies. They secured the services of the Combaticons and used them as the spearhead for an invasion of South Korea. {{storylink|International Incident Part 1: "The Land Ironclads"|The Land Ironclads}} The Autobots were able to drive the Combaticons back there and tried to neutralise them on North Korean soil, {{storylink|International Incident Part 3: "Hawk Among the Sparrows"|Hawk Among the Sparrows}} which they succeeded in doing: the battle caused [[Russia]] to launch a [[Nuclear weapon|nuclear missile]] at the area though, which was only just intercepted. The problem was decisively resolved when the Autobots had [[Thundercracker (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Thundercracker]] destroy all of North Korea's energon plants, preventing them from attracting any more Decepticons.

Having risen to power following his father's death (nobody was sure when), Kim Jong Du was leading North Korea several years after the [[Decepticon]] invasion. He oversaw the country's production of [[energon]]. At some point, he allied himself with the [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticons]], and set up an invasion of [[South Korea]] by attacking the [[Korean Demilitarized Zone]]. {{storylink|International Incident Part 1: "The Land Ironclads"|The Land Ironclads}} While the invasion started off well, Kim got angry when the Combaticons slacked off in a most unpatriotic manner after only a single night's work. They got much more active and patriotic when he threatened to take their energon rations away, after which he ordered them to destroy the enemy troops gathering nearby. {{storylink|International Incident Part 2: "Ranks of Bronze"|Ranks of Bronze}} It didn't take long for the [[Autobot]]s to get involved, leading to the destruction of North Korea's energon production facilities. A television news anchor reports that the discovery by spy satellites of [[energon]] manufacturing by [[North Korea]], leaving the [[United States of America|United States]] uneasy due to North Korea's history of pursuing nuclear weapons.

In the [[Korean Demilitarized Zone]], [[Onslaught (G1)|Onslaught]] drives through the fence separating the North and the [[South Korea|South]] and starts to attack South Korean soldiers. He is struck by a shell from a tank, but the tank is vaporized by another tank—who transforms, revealing himself as [[Brawl (G1)|Brawl]]. Jet fighters scrambled to attack the invaders are cut down in the air by [[Vortex (G1)|Vortex]], who transforms and joins the others on the ground. Onslaught radios their boss, North Korean dictator [[Kim Jong Du]], and reports that the battle is over. Kim, arriving at the head of a large North Korean military force, is pleased; [[Seoul]] will be theirs in hours at this rate.

At [[Skywatch]] headquarters, [[Spike Witwicky (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Spike Witwicky]] reflects that North Korean collaboration with the [[Decepticon]]s was inevitable. Consulting [[Joe Henderson]] about the specifics of the situation, he is unable to learn anything besides the presence of seventeen energon production facilities in North Korea—and evidence of one further [[Combaticon (G1)|Combaticon]] in play not yet sighted at the border.

Elsewhere in the base, [[Ratchet (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Ratchet]] explains to a Skywatch engineer the internal workings of Cybertronians, using a relaxed [[Cliffjumper (G1)|Cliffjumper]] as an example. [[Jetfire (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Jetfire]] expresses his hesitancy to [[Bumblebee (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Bumblebee]] about giving their knowledge to the [[human]]s, but Bumblebee replies that not only have the humans given them similar access to human information, they've also supplied the [[Autobot]]s with all the energon they need. Spike enters the room, asking to speak to the leader of the Autobots. Jetfire, Ratchet and Cliffjumper all gesture to Bumblebee, but Spike insists on [[Optimus Prime (G1)/2005 IDW continuity|Optimus Prime]].

Spike finds Optimus Prime sitting in the now-open cell where he was previously detained, which he claims helps him to think. He requests Prime's help to deal with the Combaticons, who are more organized and powerful than any Decepticon they've had to bring in before. Bumblebee accepts his request, but before he can assemble a team, Campolongo bursts in to tell them that the President is making a live address.

The [[President of the United States|President]] announces the act of aggression from North Korea towards the South, and that Cybertronians were involved on the side of the aggressors. He then declares that any nation collaborating with Cybertronians or using their technology will be considered to be in possession of weapons of mass destruction. Aware of the problems this causes for him and the Autobots, Spike orders that everyone act as if the base was under communications blackout and no one had heard the address. He then continues preparing for the mission.

That last bit is a bit worrying when the Decepticons were kicked off Earth ''three years ago!''

* When Henderson is describing Energon to Spike, he says "Our own experiments with the substance has shown that it's too unstable to store for more than a few months". It should be "Our own experiments... ''have'' shown".
* Almost all of the Transformers have changed bodies again between issues. For the first time in a very, very long time, they are drawn to the specifications of their original Generation 1 [[character model]]s, with only slight variations for necessity (Ratchet, for instance, sports electrocardiogram graphics on his shoulders instead of his traditional [[Red Cross]] symbols). Optimus Prime and Bumblebee are the exceptions, with the former in a Dery-ized version of his recent [[Don Figueroa]] design, and the latter in a cross between his Dodge Challenger body Don Figueroa used in [[Things Fall Apart, Part 5: "Earthworks"|issue #6]] and [[Chee Yang Ong]]'s simplified take of it seen at the conclusion of [[The Transformers: Bumblebee|his mini-series]], plus various elements lifted from an unused Don Figueroa design shown on the alternate cover of [[Things Fall Apart, Part 4: "Enemies of the System"|issue #5]] (which is also the design used for Cliffjumper in the first few issues of the ongoing). '''Pipes''' is an excellent soldier—tough, brave, and very strong—and otherwise worthy of little note, except for his unusual ability and eccentric hobby. When he came to [[Earth]], Pipes became enamored of the [[Human|fleshlings]]' primitive and ingenious technology and could not resist taking home cast-off examples when on missions. Eventually, a previously disused area of the [[Ark (G1)|Ark]] became his own personal museum of nose hair trimmers, patent rulers, and other worthless but fascinating ephemera of the throwaway society. He will gladly talk for endless hours about each prized find.

Only [[Wreck-Gar (G1)|Wreck-Gar]] can be said really to enjoy an extended tour of Pipes's little museum, but Pipes is a good soldier and a friendly soul, and his comrades generally allow him his little eccentricity.

Pipes's most notable ability, which he is not the most proficient at controlling, is to emit clouds of corrosive gases from his [[exhaust weaponry|exhaust pipes]]. This is possible in both modes, but is more useful (except to annoy motorists) in [[robot mode]], where the pipes are on his arms. If he stays at it for at least ten minutes, these noxious gases will eat through a 2" slab of ordinary steel. His own skin is well protected against these gases, but in battle, the coatings may flake off. If he does not notice this (as frequently occurs) he can become vulnerable to his own attack, with unpleasant results.

On arrival at the medical facility, and before Ratchet could explain the symbol on the door was the universal plague symbol, Pipes used his [[alternate mode]] to bust in and found himself hip-deep in dead bots. He was infected with the [[Red Rust]] virus by [[Dent]]. He menaced Drift while succumbing to the virus, and the other Autobot knocked him out, though he had already passed on the infection. Under [[Mandroid]]'s control, Skullcruncher menaced [[Mo Malto|Mo]], [[Robby Malto|Robby]], and [[Alex Malto]] at Mandroid's lab, smashing through a wall and using his crocodile mode to shake the Maltos' car around. Interrupted by [[Twitch]], he threw the car, which was caught by [[Thrash (ES)|Thrash]]. Skullcruncher fired on Thrash, knocking him away. While Twitch continued to fire on him, Thrash knocked him over with his newly acquired alternate mode. Back on his feet, he fired at the fleeing Mo and Thrash while Twitch and Robbie continued their barrage. Eventually, Skullcruncher and the other enthralled Decepticons were freed from Mandroid's control and apprehended. {{storylink|Secret Legacy, Part 2}} He was subsequently incarcerated in a secret Decepticon holding facility beneath [[G.H.O.S.T.]] headquarters. {{storylink|Classified}}

When [[Hashtag (ES)|Hashtag's]] internet connection to the G.H.O.S.T. facility inadvertently took the detention blocks' anti-energon fields offline, Skullcruncher was among the prisoners to be set free. Hashtag, Twitch, and [[Bumblebee (ES)|Bumblebee]] found him curled up in his open cell while they were looking for a way out of the facility. Skullcruncher did not attempt to attack them, but became enraged upon spotting guards wearing the G.H.O.S.T. insignia. Skullcruncher plowed through the guards as well as [[Soundwave (ES)|Soundwave]] as he ran through the hallway and smashed through the wall, with Bumblebee and the Terrans following behind. Now outside, Skullcruncher rose up behind Bumblebee while raising his sword before G.H.O.S.T. agents shot him and took him back into custody. {{storylink|Hashtag: Oops}}
