If RiD/CR's getting kicked in the nuts for introducing 18 characters in four episodes, shouldn't someone tot up the number introduced in both the cartoon's MTMTE mini-series, and the opening issue of the Marvel comic? Because the number's more than 18... The Earthforce cycle hyping the Euro Classics probably deserves covering too, as does the proliferation of "classic" characters in later Marvel US issues due to the Action Masters (Prowl, Wheeljack, Shockwave, Starscream, Megatron, etc.)

For the exceptions section, some Marvel bits deserve a mention, surely? I'm thinking specifically of Ratchet managing to hang in there so many years after he was cancelled despite not having an Action Master or anything, and the rest of the Dinobots coming back late on and the introduction of Galvatron at such a late stage.

:Soundwave is a Decepticon in the Generation 1 continuity family. In the Japanese series, he later took the name Soundblaster.

Soundwave is one of Megatron's most reliable troops, and he has positioned himself comfortably and irreplaceably in Megatron's upper command structure. He stands at the Decepticon leader's side as a confidant. Though "only" Communications Officer, he is comparable to Starscream and Shockwave in rank and is the only one of the three to display consistent loyalty to Megatron. Soundwave guards his place in the hierarchy fiercely. Other Decepticons (except Megatron) see him as a two-faced snake, since, as Communications Officer, Soundwave hears all and doesn't hesitate to use blackmail to keep himself high in Megatron's esteem. The other Decepticons wouldn't mind abandoning him on the battlefieldm-if they thought Megatron would let them get away with it.

Soundwave commands a legion of cassette troops to carry out tasks big and small. He has a symbiotic relationship with them, providing them transportation and a cheap, if cramped, place to live in his chest. Sometimes he lets them all out to watch impromptu gladiator games or takes them to discotheques. In return, they perform spy and recon missions for him and make sure no one calls him "unchrasimatic". <!--Uncharismatic is deliberately misspelled-->

He usually has all the personality of a stump (as evidenced by his computer-style speech). He also has no imagination, sending the aforementioned cassettes on operations with mundane names.

After the Transformers' awakening on Earth, Soundwave served quietly under Megatron before Megatron was overthrown by Shockwave. Under Shockwave's command, Soundwave attacked the Blackrock Aerospace Plant and secured it for Decepticon use. Warrior School! The plant's facilities were used to create the Constructicons, who built a massive radio dish that Soundwave used to beam a message back to Cybertron. The Next Best Thing to Being There! A short time later, during a brief period when both Megatron and Shockwave were missing in action, Soundwave assumed leadership of the Decepticons and led them against the Autobots during the "Dinobot Hunt". Dinobot Hunt!

When Megatron resurfaced, rendered immobile in a Wyoming coal mine due to lack of fuel, Soundwave sped to his rescue, re-energizing him. I, Robot Master! Using the splintered state of the Decepticon forces to his advantage, Soundwave worked both sides of the field, reporting to both Megatron and the returned Shockwave, each without the other's knowledge. When Shockwave learned that the human Buster Witwicky had begun to suffer Matrix-induced visions of the next leap in Transformer evolution, Soundwave reported this to Megatron, prompting him to battle Shockwave for leadership. The Decepticons' human ally, Robot Master, televised the battle, much to Soundwave's distaste, and in order to prevent the Decepticons from looking like fools, he interrupted the duel and insisted that they agree to a joint leadership. Second Generation!

When the Robot-Master hoax the Decepticons were perpetrating was threatened by the investigative work of Joy Meadows, Soundwave was instrumental in ending the conflict that ensued between the Decepticons and the Dinobots by holding the reporter hostage and destroying her footage. In the National Interest! Not long thereafter, when the deranged future Decepticon, Galvatron, traveled back in time, Soundwave was intrigued by the fact that he was unable to scan his mind to discern the truth of his identity. Siding with Megatron when conflict erupted, Soundwave and his leader were buried under an avalanche by Galvatron and then rescued by the Autobots in the name of forming an alliance to defeat their common enemy. Target 2006

It would be some time before Soundwave came back to the fore, and his return to the spotlight was an ignominious one. With Megatron having apparently died, Soundwave was now once again under Shockwave's command, and, while patrolling on the Decepticons' mobile island base, he found himself attacked and subdued by the time-traveling freelance peace-keeping agent, Death's Head, and tricked into giving up information on the whereabouts of Galvatron. Hunters! Although Death's Head's attempts to track down the Decepticon met with failure, Galvatron was ultimately entombed in lava, where he was later discovered by Susan Hoffman. Soundwave observed a televised broadcast of her discovery, and he and the Combaticons attempted to destroy Galvatron with explosives planted around the volcano in question. After a battle with the Throttlebots, Soundwave found that he was unable to remote-detonate the explosives planted around the volcano thanks to Blaster jamming his signal. Ladies' Night

When Shockwave was removed from power, Soundwave smoothly transitioned to serving under the new Decepticon leader, Ratbat, and helped to operate his Realvision playback system to decode data from Autobot tapes Grand Slam and Raindance. The Flames of Boltax! The tapes, it was discovered, contained information on the Underbase, the power of which was soon claimed by Starscream, who immediately targeted the Earth. Soundwave co-led the defense of New York alongside Fortress Maximus, but was deactivated by a blast of cosmic power from Starscream. Dark Star!

It would be some time before Soundwave was operational again, but he was back on his feet by the time that Starscream, now a Pretender, was busy doubting his self-worth. Fallen Star He continued to operate under the command of the new Decepticon Earth commander, Scorponok.

In 2007, in the alternate future world of Earth-120185, Soundwave was second-in-command of the Decepticon forces under Shockwave and succeeded him after Death's Head assassinated him on the orders of Unicron. The Legacy of Unicron! In 2008, Soundwave entered into an alliance with the Quintessons, arranging to attack the Autobots as part of a larger plan. He was, however, unaware of the aliens' true plans to take control of Cybertron and found himself double-crossed when the Quintessons ambushed the Decepticons en route to their attack on the Autobots. The Autobots, led by Ultra Magnus, saved Soundwave's forces from the Quintessons, and they joined forces to repel the Quintesson invasion. Space Pirates! Finally, in 2009, Soundwave led the Terrorcons back in time to 1989, where they briefly participated in the "Time Wars" before returning to their own time in the midst of the conflict in order to save their own hides. Time Wars

Earthforce
In the tangent timeline that is home to the Autobot Earthforce team, Soundwave nominally served on Megatron's side during the Decepticon Civil War, but, once again, was not above exploiting the conflict for his own ends. When an energon shipment was hijacked by Shockwave's forces thanks to information Soundwave had given them, Megatron came to suspect the presence of a traitor in his ranks, but ironically assigned Soundwave to identify the culprit. To keep his own duplicity a secret, Soundwave set up Wildrider to take the fall, and Megatron destroyed the Stunticon. Secrets

Approached by Starscream with a plan to make them both Decepticon leaders, Soundwave joined forces with the schemer and lured Megatron and Shockwave to an airport, tipping off the Autobots to their location. With the two leaders thus occupied, Soundwave and Starscream took control. Internal Affairs! Subsequently, Soundwave led an all-out attack on the Earthforce base as a diversion, while Starscream attempted to plunder an oil tanker. Starscream met with failure, however, leading Soundwave to withdraw his forces and consider taking leadership for himself alone. Divide and Conquer! Starscream was aware of Soundwave's goals, and when he was attacked by a group of alien assassins, he suspected that Soundwave had ordered the hit and struck back at him. Soundwave was able to convince Starscream he was not responsible and that in actuality, it was the work of Megatron and Shockwave. External Forces!

Soon afterward, Soundwave learned that human reporter Irwin Spoon had secured an interview with the Autobots that could potentially resolve the public view of the Transformer war. Seeking to prevent this, he had the Stunticons capture the journalist. Although the Autobots were able to rescue him, a carefully planted cerebro-shell ensured that the story Irwin wrote was anything but accurate. End of the Road!
American cartoon continuity
Generation 1 cartoon
:Voice Actor: Frank Welker (US), Issei Masamune (Japan)

Prior to his arrival on Earth, Soundwave had the questionably useful altmode of a space-age lamp-post [although it is possible he could have been a communications tower, which seems more apropriate]. This allowed him to get as close to Autobot headquarters as the street leading into Iacon, but thankfully, his chest-dwelling minion Laserbeak could snoop even closer. The loyal Laserbeak overheard talk of the Autobot mission to seek new energy sources off Cybertron, which prompted the fateful Decepticon interception mission that eventually landed both teams on Earth.

Immediately after the Transformers awakened on Earth in 1984, Soundwave played an essential role in the generation of energon cubes and the formation of plans for a new space cruiser to return the Decepticons to Cybertron. He sounded really cool when he talked about these, too. Soundwave was reformatted as a portable cassette player, which allowed him to dupe a grabby and none-too-questioning Spike Witwicky into carrying his shrunken form into the Ark headquarters. This sort of thing was to happen many times to the seemingly tape-deck-addicted citizens of Earth.

Later, he used his mind-reading talents to acquire an antimatter formula for the Decepticons from the brain of Chip Chase.

One of Soundwave's most notable misadventures came in in 1985, when, operating a plan conceived by Starscream, he brainwashed humans with ultrasonic vibrations inside the Decepticon-built night club Dancitron in New York City, leading to a confrontation with his Autobot Communications Officer counterpart, Blaster. This began a lasting rivalry between the two.

Soundwave rarely displayed much emotion and only infrequently exhibited any cunning and self-serving traits. He came across as extremely loyal to Megatron, even going so far as to recover the mortally wounded leader, who'd been left for dead at the Battle of Autobot City in 2005. But while Soundwave was loyal, he was far from stupid, and he kept his mouth shut when Megatron was subsequently ejected into space. Although he did suggest himself as a replacement leader, he again loyally served Megatron when that being returned as Galvatron.

In the year 2006, although operating in a less prominent capacity for most of the time, Soundwave played a prominent role in Galvatron's attempt to learn the secret of a sonic weapon on the planet Eurythma, where sound and music were the way of life, leaving Soundwave entranced by the planet's perfect melodies. Recording each piece of the harmony that formed the devastating sonic effect, Soundwave was defeated when the Eurythmans countered the harmony with white noise, and he was again pulled into a confrontation with Blaster, who erased his recordings.

Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers manga
While Megatron and the Decepticons engaged the Autobots in battle in Arizona, Soundwave and his cassettes were dispatched to do something unspecified (but likely evil) in Tokyo. Optimus Prime dispatched a unit of Autobots led by Bumblebee and Kenji to track them down. He was ultimately defeated when Bumblebee got the drop on him with a patented "Bumble-Kick" and shattered his chest. This made it impossible for his cassette forces to return to him, leaving them to be captured as well. Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers issue 2 When he next appeared, Soundwave hadn't quite got over his injuries, and was seen with bandages stuck to his chest-window. {{storylink|Fight!
Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers story pages
When Soundwave learned that the Autobots were keeping themselves in shape by having a friendly race, he set up a trap within a narrow canyon, walling the Autobots in and opening fire on them. Luckily, Hound arrived on the scene and delivered a powerful punch to Soundwave's chest, shattering his tape door once again. Soundwave immediately fled.

The Headmasters anime
In 2011, the Decepticons were offered a chance to regain control of Cybertron when Vector Sigma began to destabilize due to the release of the energy of the Matrix. To discover the Autobots' plan of action, Soundwave and his cassettes infiltrated Autobot City. Although discovered by Blaster and his own cassettes, they escaped with the knowledge that the Matrix was currently missing, and that the Autobots were preparing to search Earth for it. Blaster and Hot Rod subsequently embarked on a search mission to the Arctic, where Soundwave and his cassettes attacked them. Blaster allowed Hot Rod to escape, and he and Soundwave engaged in a one-on-one battle, with shattered chests and severed limbs aplenty. The two combatants ultimately inflicted fatal damge to one another, and Soundwave's body exploded even as Blaster collapsed. The Mystery of Planet Master

Soundwave's cassettes were able to recover fragments of his body, allowing Decepticon Headmaster leader Scorponok to reconstruct him using the planet Master's super-technology. Soundwave was thusly reborn as Soundblaster, and immediately set to work using his broadcasting powers to direct the Decepticons' latest creation, the Madmachine, in another attack on Cybertron. The science of Master had also restored Blaster to life, however, and as "Twincast," he destroyed Soundblaster's sonic control and foiled the Decepticons' plot. Operation Cassette

Soundblaster continued to serve in his role as a spy for the Decepticons, and he and his cassettes would regularly snoop on the Autobots on Cybertron, Earth and Athenia. Soundblaster and his team were responsible for discovering the Vector Sigma was in the process of creating Cybertonuron, Cybertron is in Grave Danger, Part 1 but they didn't take kindly to the arrival of the new intelligence officer, Counterpunch, who seemed able to dig up information that they couldn't (because he was actually the Autobot double-agent, Punch). Return of the Immortal Emperor

Although rarely doing little more than standing guard and relaying information over large distances (save for one daring instance where he and Ratbat actually amanged to sneak board Battleship Maximus), Soundblaster was a regulary battlefield presence, and accompanied the Decepticon army on interplanetary energy raids, voyaged to planet Master, and was present on Earth during the final battle at the North Pole.

The Headmasters manga
After their defeat at the North Pole, the Decepticons were preparing to retreat from Earth entirely when Scorponok instructed Soundblaster to remain on the planet in secret to act as a spy for the Decepticons. Soundblaster proved that he wasn't up to the challenge by making his presence and intentions known almost instantly when he kicked Wheelie square in the face and took the Witwicky family hostage. Chromedome was left powerless to do anything but surrender, as Slugfest and Overkill brutalized Spike and threatened Carly. Daniel finally snapped and beat the living crap out of the two Cassette dinosaurs, leaving Soundblaster open to Chromedome's poorly named "Master-Chrome Hurricane Throw to the End of Hell!" Chromedome chucked Soundblaster over the horizon, where he landed near the rogue Decepticon Sixshot. The Headmasters issue 8
In When Continents Collide, Megatron calls Soundwave a "blundering, tape-filled idiot." This is notable because it is hilarious. Also, Soundwave is really, really whiny in these stories.

In the 3H Tales of the Beast Wars comics, Soundwave is one of the ancient warriors who appears from J'nwan to help battle the warlord Shokaract.

Dreamwave Generation 1 continuity
Soundwave was chosen by Megatron to lead his second assassination team against the new Autobot supreme Commander, Optimus Prime. With the aid of his cassette troops, most notably Ravage, as well as Shrapnel, Bombshell, and Kickback, it was assumed he would have no problem with a young, peace-loving Autobot. Soundwave, like many others, underestimated Prime's resolve and was quickly incapacitated. He recovered quickly enough to rescue Megatron after the latter's own battle with Prime.

In the present day, Soundwave was among the Decepticons who quickly joined Shockwave's forces upon returning to Cybertron. It seems clear, however, that Soundwave had little loyalty to Shockwave, as he readily joined up with Starscream when the Seeker decided to return to Earth and take over. Though Soundwave feigned subservience to Starscream, it was later revealed that he had been serving Megatron the entire time in secret.
ongoing
Long before the war began, Soundwave was the personal assistant to Senator Ratbat. When Megatron caught Ratbat's eye as a champion of the illegal underground gladiatorial matches, Ratbat sent Soundwave to offer Megatron funding and weapons technology. When two Autobots were discovered listening in on their conversation, Soundwave dispatched Ravage, Buzzsaw, and Laserbeak to capture them. Some time later, Soundwave was assigned to find a warrior with flight capabilities. He found the Seekers: Starscream, Skywarp, and Thundercracker. During a recruitment rally in which Megatron attempted to kill Senator Decimus, a raid by the Autobots under Sentinel Prime resulted in the participants being arrested. Soundwave, however, was freed under Senate directive, something which greatly angered the Prime. Soundwave had apparently switched loyalties at this time, becoming one of Megatron's own in not only helping Starscream exterminate Kaon senators but also to the extent that he destroyed Ratbat's original body, placing his spark into a relatively weak cassette form and thus forcing him into the Decepticons. Megatron Origin

Centuries later, after Shockwave disappeared, Megatron assigned Bludgeon to delve into Shockwave's research and relay all the information back to him. As the Decepticon leader did not fully trust Bludgeon, Megatron also assigned Soundwave to spy on him. Soundwave followed Bludgeon and his team as they left for Earth in 1984 and established a base within Mt. St. Helens, eventually discovering that they intended to resurrect Thunderwing. Though Soundwave tried to stop them, Iguanus used an experimental cannon from Shockwave's arsenal to lock him in his alt mode while they instigated a volcanic eruption. He was eventually recovered by a team of unwitting humans who sold him to a pawn shop. Spotlight: Soundwave

Soundwave was purchased by a teen and taken to his home. When Ravage and Laserbeak were reprogrammed by Skywatch to find the other Transformers, Skywatch's control signal was blocked by a signal emanating from a functioning Soundwave, still in cassette-player mode. Devastation issue 4

: Soundwave transforms into a realistically sized microcassette recorder of indeterminate manufacture and includes weapons that turn into imitation batteries to power his nonexistent circuitry. Takara's release of Soundwave in the Transformers line was nearly identical to the Microchange "MC-10 Cassette Man" toy on which he was based. This meant that along with being packaged with Rumble (previously a red "MC-01 Micross"), he came with a set of non-functioning headphones that allowed you not to listen to the silence not recorded on his non-functioning tapes with the non-functioning microphone. Hasbro packaged Soundwave with Buzzsaw rather than Rumble and omitted the other non-functioning accessories.

: Soundwave was included in the VS-Y versus pack along with Rumble and Grimlock.

: For 2003, Soundwave was reissued as part of Takara's Transformers Collection "book-box" series. This iteration of Soundwave came packaged with Laserbeak.

: Another reissue of Soundwave and Laserbeak was seen in 2007 with Takara's Transformers Encore series.

: As part of the Japanese Headmasters series, Soundwave was redecoed and retooled so that he could hold two Cassettes in his chest at once. Soundblaster's tape door was cast in transparent red plastic to allow the information on the "readout" decal, unique to the Headmasters decos of the cassettes, to be seen, functioning in the same manner as the Tech Specs decoders. The readouts of the Decepticon cassettes showed the "weak points" of Fortress Maximus. Soundblaster came packaged with Buzzsaw.
: A redeco of the Go-Bot Gearhead, Soundwave transforms into a Ford Thunderbird stock car with precision wheels and wire axles, compatible with "Hot Wheels" and "Matchbox" playsets and tracks (which he was properly sized to fit).

: Notably, his color scheme is very loud, being bright shades of fluorescent yellow, pink and blue. This is one time fans can actually get away with describing a toy's color scheme as neon.

: Machine Wars Soundwave was a redeco of the Predator Stalker minus Stalker's handgun and its missiles and with the sighting gimmick having been removed from the missile. In this incarnation, Soundwave transforms into tracked missile carrier.

: Like all of the Smallest Transformers, this version of Soundwave is a tiny replica of his G1 form. He came with Smallest Transformers Ravage, who is probably the smallest Transformer ever.

Universe
*Soundwave & Space Case (Ultra, 2004)

: The Machine Wars version of Soundwave was redecoed for release in the Universe line in an Ultra-level two-pack with Space Case. Due to the lack of fiction, it is possible that this incarnation is in fact an alternate-universe version of Soundwave, or possibly a new character altogether.

Titanium series
*Soundwave (6" Cybertron Heroes, 2006)

: A new representation of his G1 form, this Soundwave transforms into a slightly redesigned version of his original microcassette player mode. He also comes with a VERY tiny Laserbeak that transforms into a black rectangle vaguely resembling a microcassette and is almost (but not quite) as small as Smallest TF Ravage. He can also fit inside of Soundwave's chest. Both of Soundwave's guns resemble batteries and fit into the battery compartment on his back. Some fans have complained that oddly-shaped crotch area makes it look like Soundwave is wearing a diaper. Reprolabels.com took advantage of this realization with a custom sticker set.

: This mold was to be redecoed as Soundblaster with a new Ravage tape partner, but was not released due to the cancellation of the line.

Classics
*Soundwave (Commemorative Edition, 2007)

: Despite having packaging that claims Classics Soundwave is "identical to the original toy," this version is actually a redeco of the Transformers Collection Soundblaster reissue in Soundwave's original colors. This is presumably due to reported mold degradation on the cassette door of the Soundwave mold. While later releases such as the Transformers Encore edition would feature a single-cassette bay, it is noteworthy that this release featured the much more rarely used Cassetteman version of the door mold. Like the Soundblaster reissue, Classics Soundwave is packaged with "Battle" Ravage, as well as Laserbeak, recolored from Soundblaster's Buzzsaw. In a move rare for a US release of this toy, the set included two Takara clear-plastic cassette cases. Exclusive to Toys 'R' Us stores, Soundwave had been intended for the Commemorative Series, but after the cancellation of that line, he was added to Classics, although the phrase "Commemorative Edition" is prominently displayed on the front and sides of the box.

Music Label
: Released by TakaraTomy's Music Label (which also puts out a not-half-as-cool Convoy iPod stand), Soundwave is an MP3 player which takes a miniSD card. The box says it can take up to 1 GB, but many claims have shown it can support up to 2 GB. The player uses 1 AAA battery. An optional accessory, sold separately, features headphones that transform into Frenzy and Rumble. The player also features a transformation almost entirely accurate to his G1 appearance. He also comes with two sets of hands, his shoulder cannon, and a sidearm.
:In Generation 2, a redeco of the Laser Cycle Road Pig was planned as Soundwave, but ultimately never released, one of many planned redecos that never made it. Some packaged samples do exist.

Trivia
* According to an interview in the magazine Otaku USA (issue 3, pg. 102-3), the original Microchange toy and the accompanying cassettes were at least partially designed by famed mecha designer and anime director Shinji Aramaki. He did not come up with the transformation scheme, but designed most of the outward appearance and details. He also worked on the toys that became the deluxe Insecticons, Reflector, and Perceptor.

* Including the Microchange "Cassette Man" version, the original Soundwave mold has sported at least four different tape doors:
** The original MC-10 version had a cassette door that had "Cassette Man" emblazoned on it and featured a hinge that was internal to the robot's body.
** For the initial Transformers release by Hasbro, the "Cassette Man" text was removed.
** When Takara's Soundwave was released, the hinge was remolded so the bottom of the door attached to the outside of the robot, on either side of the "buttons", which had also been remolded.
** The Soundblaster version had a door that retained the external hinge and added the capacity for holding a second cassette.

* Though Soundwave's toy is a microcassette recorder, his fictional appearances depict him as a stereo cassette deck or Walkman. (Likewise, his microcassette tapes are depicted as regular audio cassettes.)

* Animation from early Transformers commercials featured a Soundwave model colored in very light blue, versus the dark blue used later. Also, instead of the cassettes ejecting themselves from his chest, he reached into his chest compartment with his own fingers and threw the (tiny) tapes into the air.

* Soundwave's distinctive voice proved to be one of G1's most memorable aspects. The highly processed voice began with Frank Welker basically doing his Dr. Claw voice. Whether due to variations in the performance or the processing, the final result varied quite a bit across Soundwave's three seasons on the show. Occasionally, as in the episodes "Roll For It" and "Webworld", the processing was left out and Welker's actual voice can be heard.

* The Marvel US comics chose a purple scheme for Soundwave. This could have been an error, an early look for him that was dropped in other media, or perhaps an attempt to distinguish him from the other Decepticons, who were mostly blue (especially since blacks also ended up as blues in the industry's then-limited color palette). The Marvel UK comics colored him blue like everywhere else (partially due to using a more sophisticated colouring system). He was also sometimes shown without a faceplate.

* Soundwave's computer model was used for one of the generic transformers in Beast Machines. It is seen in Nightscream's flashback being cornered by Vehicon drones just before Nightscream flees into the lower levels of Cybertron. Though the model was recolored, it was still really <span title="This may not be an actual word" style="cursor:help;">'Soundwavey,'</span> causing much confusion among fans.

* Later, Soundwave's character model showed up numerous times in various color schemes as a generic background character in Armada.

* Sideways listened to music using a tape deck resembling Soundwave in the Cybertron cartoon. Later, after a new Planet X was found, Cybertron Soundwave held tape deck Soundwave in his arms.

* In the Japanese dub of the Generation 1 cartoon as well as the manga, all of Soundwave's cassette forces which could talk referred to him as "big brother". It should probably be noted, though, that this is a fairly common way to refer to others you admire and such in Japanese. It's also a term that gang members use toward older, more experienced members who aren't actual gang bosses. Take it as you will. Whatever it says about his relationship with them, it does give new meaning to the phrase "Big Brother is watching over you".

As I discussed on Micro-Continuities, I'm keen for people to contribute to the article; I'm not overly precious about it. All I'd ask is that if you really hate something, please discuss it HERE first, rather than outright deleting or extensively re-writing it just yet.

I'd particularly appreciate anyone wanting to add examples from other franchises. It's pretty G1 and Beast Era-centric at the moment. More/better pictures would also be great.

Also, I'd REALLY appreciate any suggestions as to what category(ies) this article should be placed in. I'm really scratching my head here...

Anyway, don't be shy, let the newbie know what you think!

Cheers,

:Wonderful article. I enjoyed it. This is something that's always on my mind when I'm looking at my toys or comics. About the proto-humans in Beast Wars, though: proto-humans were smaller than modern humans (around 4 ft tall). So the scale problems, while still an issue, are not as drastic as they seem. I'm not sure how to integrate that into that section. --Crockalley 18:02, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
JBW Scales?
I remember hearign that the JBW TF's were scaled like classic G1 TF's, not the 8' tall BW-era average, but it's been so longsince i saw parts of BW2 that I can't back that up.<br/>
(This of course creates issues with Primal suddenly getting that size int he teamup. which I suppose is a problem in Robotmasters too.)<br/>
Pic of Robotmasters Primal & Prime vs. a 2-shot from Agenda? -Derik 07:53, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

:I wouldn't know; I've never seen more than the teamup movie of BWII and some painful snippets of BWNeo on YouTube. Frankly I loath the little I've seen of these shows, and most Japanese-originated fiction for that matter, although I don't want to force that opinion on anyone. Love the leader-toys though ;-)

:Please feel free to add anything like that if you can verify it, and if accurate please do point out the resulting scale problem with Primal in relation BW and RM. Cheers, PacifistPrime.

::Such misconceptions were probably caused by the fact that in BWII Most of the Destrons turn into vehicles, the J-Beast Warriors are only G1-Sized if we assume that the Destron's vehicle modes are supposed to be real world scale. They could just be tiny vehicles like in Dawn of Futures Past. Which is probably the most likely, as Lio Convoy has been shown to be the same size as the Lion he scanned, while on the other hand Tasmanian Kid turns into a huge Tasmanian Devil, much like Rattrap turns into a huge rat.

:::But that's inconsistant as well. I did a quick search and found evidence that LioConvoy was about the size of his lion, as you said , but I also saw an image of Tasmania Kid cradling a tasmanian devil that he scanned in his hands . Wikipedia places the average length of a Tasmanian devil at 652 mm, which would be over one-fourth the height of an average man. So it's still confusing.-EricMarrs 23:41, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
::::Contextually, though I haven't seen the episode, I'm betting that's a baby Tazmanian devil.
::::Sale in JBW is weird. It appears that Lioconvoy was 'real' sized, (about 7 feet tall, and transforms into a normal-sized lion.) while others in hsi crew are ridiculously undersized. By contrast- the Destrons turned into TINY versions of jets and such. The toy scale was (loosely) maintained. Robotmasters is fucked though.
::::I might rephrase the entry to more accurately reflect this contradiction. -Derik 00:15, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Mini-Cons
The first paragraph on Mini-Con scale bugs me. The Earth-based altmodes have always been pretty clearly intended as small-scale reproductions of actual vehicles, no different from how Waspinator is (theoretically) a large-scale reproduction of an actual wasp. So Sparkplug, for instance, has windows because he's a tiny Lamborghini and Lamborghinis have windows. (A case could be made for the non-Earth-design vehicles, I suppose.) It just seems to be inventing an issue for the sake of having something to question on a subject where there's already plenty going on that's questionable... if anything, Mini-Cons in Armada are one of the few cases of consistent scale in Transformers. --Andrusi 18:23, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
:Well, except the weapons. --Andrusi 18:24, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

: Yeah, I'm not wild about it either. They're not supposed to be having passengers at all ever, and clearly were never intended to... except in Cybertron. (And, well, the SAT, right.) --M Sipher 18:43, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

::Well, I take your point, but it seems to me that it's still a valid inclusion. Even if Mini-Cons were never intended to hold passangers (although for that matter, frankly, how often do you see post-Movie characters actually carrying passangers anyway...?), they nevertheless turn into vehicles that appear to be able to carry people in them but are too small to actually do so. They are, almost by definition, SCALED DOWN representations of (mostly) real vehicles. So feel free to reword the paragraph, but I still think Mini-Cons warrant a reference. That's my two cents, anyway. Ta, PacifistPrime

Question
Why does Lio Convoy and Primal being the same size in BWII cause a problem. Lio convoy was the same size as a real lion.

nanotyranus
you should remove the nanotyrannus caomment since many now believe it's just a young rex
:Except that when Mainframe created the CGI models for Beast Wars, Nanotyrannus was believed to be a real genus. I always assumed that they had Megatron get his beast mode from scanning Nanotyrannus fossils so he wouldn't completely dwarf the rest of the cast. --Rotty 20:36, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Scale within Toylines
Parts of the paragraph involving the movie toys are very inaccurate, especially the claim that non-Prime or Megatron characters having toys in different classes representing the same body is virtuarlly unprecendeted. If it were just the Legends that were the exception, that would be fine, as the reason for that class was "small versions of the large toys", much the TF-Juniors (same goes for fast-food toys and kabya kits).

The main problem with this is Beast Machines, as the first Megatron (Mega) toy is the same "body" as his TMII form (Ultra), three toys for Cheetor (Mega, Supreme, Deluxe) and Primal (Deluxe, Mega, Supreme), Jetstorm (Deluxe and Ultra), Tankorr (Mega and Basic), and Thrust (Deluxe and Basic). (Yes, the Basics forms of the last two were techinaclly Drones, but the Beast Wars Returns line released the Basics as the Generals, and the visual difference between General and Drone was some extra paint.) --FortMax 20:41, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
Awsomeness.
Hey man love the article. I wish all of wikipedia could be like that, informal and with a bit of humour, instead of being as about as much fun as getting repeatedly kicked in the face. Lauds.

Movie
While not perfect, the movie has avoided many of the scale issues that previous generations have had, and should be mentioned. As with Beast-Era, this entire new kettle of fish is in need of its own section and should probably be added soon. If anyone can point out any scale problems in-movie (not in the toys, though there are many there) please mention them here. -King Starscream 14:08, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
:: It was a long time ago, and I can't remember where (which is a damn shame) I heard that the OC combiners were sort-of reverse gestalts/combiners - Guard City, for example, is a single Cybertron who can split himself into five modules (the individual names being something toy-only), hence the lack of pre-reissue bios, individual mentions and so on. No bloody idea where I heard/read that, sadly, or even whether it's one of those old chestnuts about the Japanese line that got discredited years ago - more just hoping it'd jog someone else's memory than anything else. -- Cliffjumper 20:27, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
Red Alert is...not always so good with those other traits. The other Autobots appreciate his good intentions and eye for detail, but his ratio of false alarms to real emergencies is not always the greatest, and it makes them less likely to take him seriously when a threat is real. ====Transformers: The Headmasters====
Red Alert did make one appearance in the first episode of the Japanese exclusive Headmasters series.

The character also featured in the Transformers 2010 title sequence, despite not appearing in any of the episodes themselves.

Marvel Comics continuity
Generation 1
Aside from a possible cameo on the cover of US #41, and his profile appearing in the Transformers Universe series, Red Alert didn't appear in the American Marvel series.

He did manage a small, disjointed run of appearances in the British comic, however, emerging out of nowhere in The Enemy Within to thump the rampaging Brawn. He then disappeared for 180 issues, before appearing with Rodimus Prime's future Autobots in Time Wars. The character then showed up intermittently for the 'future' UK stories, but never really did much.

Grimlock planned a raid on Jhiaxus' ship Twilight against Optimus Prime's orders. Unfortunately, Jhiaxus was expecting this move and had Grimlock's troops surrounded. Against type, Red Alert attacked Jhiaxus anyhow, and Red Alert was blown to pieces. Red Alert's death hinted to Grimlock that this may have been a bad idea.

Dreamwave comics continuity
Red Alert's presence in the Dreamwave comics was a twisted one. When civil war broke out on the planet Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons, Red Alert joined the Autobot cause, acting as an advisor to Optimus Prime when he became the new Autobot leader.

In the comic arc "Prime Directive", Red Alert was shown as one of the Autobots peiced back together after Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp had a dandy of a time pulling the minibots apart. Shortly afterwards, in "War And Peace", he was shown retroactively as one of Cybertron's High Council, and had evidently worked there for some time, as evidenced in flashback images in the series.

Red Alert was one of the tutors training the Mini-Bots after Shockwave was defeated. He was last seen amongst those Autobots who worked on the construction of the new Autobot City.

* Voice actor Michael Chain has stated that he based his characterization of Red Alert on former U.S. President Richard Nixon, a man so incredibly paranoid that he kept secret audio recordings of himself.
* In the Dreamwave Generation 1 comics, when showing the panel through the eyes of many Cybertronians, Autobot and Decepticon alike, twisted text along the side of the shot, oftentimes reversed or flipped around, would read "The More Than Meets The Eye Transformer Red Alert". ===Dreamwave comics continuity===

: Transforming into a Lamborghini Countach Fire Chief's car, Red Alert's toy is a redeco of the Diaclone "New Countach LP500S Police Car", which was a retool that added roof lights to the original Diaclone "New Countach LP500S", which was the mold used to make Sideswipe. Red Alert's alt mode is a perfect disguise, since many Fire Departments have Lamborghinis as auxiliary vehicles.

: Red Alert saw the first of many reissues in early 2001. As part of Takara's "Collector's Edition" series of reissues that saw several pairs of "mold-mates" released together in limited numbers, Alert and Lambor were available as "Set A" at World Character Convention 12 For 2002, Alert was again released with Lambor, this time as "New Year Special" editions available through Takara's e-Hobby online shop. Hasbro reissued Red by himself as part of Commemorative Series IV, available at US Toys "R" Us stores in 2003.

: The first release in the Asterisk sub-line of Binaltech, Alert is a retool of the Binaltech Streak mold as a Subaru WRX STi Japanese Police vehicle, a scheme that many fans expected for a Binaltech/Alternators Prowl. Although not a Fire Department vehicle this time, the toy's robot mode did feature many red highlights, including a red head, but as the headsculpt was unchanged, he still looked like Streak. BTA Alert was packaged with the PVC human figurine Ai Kuruma, a poilcewoman based on Robots in Disguise T-AI.

: It should be noted that Alert's release had problems with parts-fitting in vehicle mode, possibly a sign that the Subaru WRX tooling was showing its age. The later release of this mold as Ricochet in the Alternators line, though, does not have these problems.

Trivia
* The original storyboards for The Transformers: The Movie depict a death scene for Red Alert which was not included in the finished film. Red meets his end as he is shot in the back by Skywarp after helping Ultra Magnus, Tracks and Sideswipe attack Devastator.

* Control art for Binaltech Prowl and other information, such as a listing for "Alternators Red Alert" that appeared on Hasbro's web site with an image of Alternators Prowl, seem to indicate that the Acura RSX mold was originally planned to be Red Alert.

* Voice actor Michael Chain has stated that he based his characterization of Red Alert on former U.S. President Richard Nixon, a man so incredibly paranoid that he kept secret audio recordings of himself.

* Red Alert appeared in one of five original Generation 1 public service announcements. After nearly mowing down a pair of kids on bikes, Red Alert scolded them and told them to never ride at night without reflectors. Of course, no one listened to him because he's a paranoid psychopath.

While other messages were often used, sometimes as Easter Eggs, this was the most popular.
Synopsis
In the year 2009 a time rift has destroyed the planet Quintesson and is now threatening to consume both Earth and Cybertron. Analysing the source of the disturbance they find the source of the rift to be the year 1989. They correctly deduce that Galvatron is somehow the cause. In an attempt to solve the problem a small group of Autobots travel back in time to 1989.

In 1989 the rift is also threatening modern day Earth, causing natural disasters. An earthquake awakens Ravage who has lain inactive since falling down a mine shaft. He attempts to escape back to the surface but instead discovers the underground base of Galvatron.

Optimus Prime is giving a briefing to the other Autobots in which he outlines his belief that the time storm is related to Galvatron. Meanwhile outside the Ark, Highbrow is fretting over what to do with the head of Scroponok that he had captured (in the 1989 Transformers Annual). He wishes to end the threat of Scorponok but is unwilling to kill him in cold blood.

Before he can make a decision he is attacked by the Decepticon Headmasters and Targetmasters in an attempt to recover the head. They capture the head but before they can destroy Highbrow the other Autobots come to his rescue and a major battle ensues.

In the midst of the battle the future Autbots arrive causing Optimus Prime, Hardhead, Highbrow, Blaster, Brainstorm and Snarl to be transported to the holding dimension as part of the time travel process. Thinking the friends have been killed by the newcomers, Fortress Maximus leads an attack on the future Autobots.

At the same time a spacecraft from Cybertron arrives on Earth carrying the combined forces of the Autobot Wreckers and the Decepticon Mayhem Attack Squad. They have joined forces in an attempt to force Galvatron to return to his own time.

The Autobot battle is eventually stopped when Goldbug, who has seen the results of time travel before and believes the newcomers are friends, is injured. Using the Creation Matrix that resides in both Optimus and Rodimus Prime, the present and future leaders are able to communicate with each other and resolve the battle peacefully.

The Wreckers and the Mayhem Attack Squad meanwhile enter Galvatron’s base and confront the future Decepticon. They are shocked to discover however that Galvatron and Megatron have now joined forces. The two of them soon leave the ranks of the Wreckers and Mayhem Attack Squad decimated forcing them to retreat and regroup.

Optimus Prime is explaining that the rift is caused by Cyclonus and Scoruge being in the present because they bypassed the usual mass transfer system when they travelled back in time using Uniron’s time portal (see The Legacy of Unicron). As a result the balance of space time has been upset. The situation has been made worse by Cyclonus’ death twenty years before his creation. (See Dry Run). They deduce that if Cyclonus and Scourge are returned to the future the rift will seal itself.

Galvatron and Megatron follow the Wreckers and the Mayhem Attack Squad and continue the battle outside bringing the other Autobots into the fray. Galvatron has now become totally insane and is fighting blindly and slaughtering all in his path.

Scourge, who is beginning to have doubts about his alliance with Galvatron decides to take action and flies to the Decepticon fortress to retrieve Cyclonus’ body. There he finds Shockwave in a state of mental breakdown after learning that he is due to die at Cyclonus and Scourge’s hands in 2008. Unwilling to let Scourge take Cyclonus’ body he blasts the future Decepticon unconscious.

The battle with Galvatron is going badly and all are falling before him. Having half of his face removed hasn't helped, pushing him even further from sanity at the same time as changing the course of history. Optimus Prime, trapped in the limbo dimension can only watch through the Matrix link. As the Autobots continue to fall however he decides to take drastic action and uses the power of the Matrix to return to reality and confront Galvatron. However because he is now in the same period as Rodimus Prime, also the bearer of the Matrix, the effects of the time rift increase.

Scourge, recovering appeals to Ravage to get Cyclonus’ body and wanting the madness to end he sacrifices himself by throwing himself into the rift. Ravage manages to convince Shockwave that because he has foreknowledge he has time to prevent his fate. This snaps Shockwave from his mental decline.

Galvatron, still fighting madly manages to beat even Optimus Prime, but as he stands triumphant the time rift rips him apart. However the rift continues to worsen as it needs Cyclonus as well. Just as the rift is about to rip the Earth apart Shockwave arrive and throws the body of Cyclonus into the rift causing it to close itself.

The future Autobots return to their own time pledging to destroy all their time machines. Optimus Prime and Shockwave agree to a truce until they next meet.

Errors
*The first page of issue 201 was originally printed with the wrong colours. This was corrected in the subsequent Titan Books reprint.
*The future Decepticons don't really add anything to the story. They just turn up, watch for a bit and then leave.
*Similarly, what's left of The Wreckers and the Mayhem Attack Squad, having been key characters for much of the story, simply disappear in the closing stages, shunted aside by the big names. The same happens to the rank-and-file present day Autobots such as Wheeljack and Scattershot.
*The "present" Autobots should recognise most of the "future" Autobots - Kup and Blurr, for example, are among their current forces on the Ark. Kinda lucky they didn't make the trip to Earth, really... They should probably recognise Ultra Magnus and Rodimus Prime (he looks just like Hot Rod, after all) as well, and maybe even Red Alert.
*The Wrecker/Mayhem strategy is laughable - they simply walk into Galvatron's base, arguing loudly.
*The nature of Goldbug's injury shifts all over the place - he's shot in the shoulder by Misfire, but then has a critical shoulder injury by the time Magnus finds him. His dramatic turn done with, his life-threatening wound reverts to being a shoulder injury that Hoist patches up in three seconds flat.
*Where does Fracas go?

Items of note
*This marks the end of the story arc that began 121 issues ago in Target 2006.
*This was the last of the UK comic's 'epic' storylines. By issue 213 falling sales meant that the page count of the UK originated strip was reduced from 11 to 6. The constant threat of the comic's cancellation meant that Simon Furman kept the story arcs limited to a few issues at most.
*Cyclonus was killed in issue 189 Dry Run.
*Here Ravage recovers from his fall down a mine shaft after a battle with Skids in issue 72-73 Showdown (US issue 20).
*Finally, Galvatron stays dead. Hard to miraculously recover from being erased from history.
*Reprinted as a Trade Paperback by Titan Books in July 2003.

Hoooooo doggies, does this need work. I'd argue with both the contention that the GB cartoon was "more kiddy", AND the contention that the toys were "simpler". I think the information in X-Bob's edit is more fiction-based than metafictional-based, which is largely what that section is about. It would probably belong on the G1 GoBots page, if anywhere. --Monzo 03:37, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
I don't really see why so much of this article was removed. I think the sections that were here called Pre-GoBots, International, and Cartoon were all appropriate and belong in the article. The fiction ties between TF and GoBots are minimal, but from a real-world historical perspective, I think that the history and nature of the GoBots brand is quite relevant to Transformers history. TFU.info and M Sipher's TF variations list both have extensive GoBots coverage, and I don't recall anybody saying those were inappropriate for TF resources to include. I am not suggesting that turn this into a "Transformers and GoBots" wiki or anything. I just think that, well, the name "Machine Men" and the fact that GoBots had a cartoon series should really be in this article. --Steve-o 21:08, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
:Personally, I'm fine with this article being fairly extensive, so long as we don't start seeing lots of purely GoBots-related articles showing up on the rest of the Wiki. (No GoBots character lists, or episode pages for the GoBots cartoon, for example).--G.B. Blackrock 21:14, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
Depth...
I was just wondering would any more work be wanted on this thing? I'm tempted to add in a bit, but would probably let my Gobot love take over - for example, is the UK comic strip worth a mention? Or the Robo Machines European reissue line?

Also, should I add a fairly NPOV piece on the reasons why TF won in the end (i.e. much better marketing)?

Incidentally, it's nice to find there are quite a few TF fans who, like me, aren't either/or on the Gobot thing... "My transforming robot line is AWESOME, the others are all ghey" has always seemed a bit schoolyard to me :)
